WHAT SET SOCIAL MEDIA ABLAZE IN 2016?
W
e have come to the end of 2016 so it is only natural that we seek to review the year’s memorable moments. This year in review is guided by the social media impact of each occurrence mentioned. As far as Entertainment, Fashion, Beauty and Celebrity go, here is a look back at the highlights (or lowlights as the case may be) of 2016. The Ubiquitous Ian Alleyne Ian Alleyne could potentially be personality of the year if it were all up to social media mentions. The man is literally a walking meme at this point. He had three separate and notable events this year which had the internet going nuts. First Alleyne made headlines for cursing out longtime partner in crime (fighting) Roger Alexander leading to Alleyne being manhandled and arrested by his former friend. The melee spawned one of the most memorable catchphrases of the year “Is ranks ting with you” as Alleyne tried to plead his case. Inspector Alexander added to the spectacle by posting footage of Alleyne in a cell and in handcuffs on a rival network. The second incident saw Alleyne being fired by his employers Guard-
ian Media Limited. This followed a suspension due to an investigation into controversial remarks he made on his Crime Watch programme which was aired live on CNC3. Alleyne took to social media to express his thanks for being offered an opportunity to work at the station following stints at WINTV and CCNTV6. He insisted that he holds “no ill feelings” for his former employers. The third incident involving Alleyne saw him crying and asking for public assistance after most of his appliances and furniture at his house were repossessed for failure to pay damages incurred in a defamation suit. This took place on the same day he was due in court for his matter with inspector Alexander. Maybe not even Alleyne thought he would generate that much attention in 2016. Sheron’s Domestic Abuse Saga Friend of the aforementioned Ian Alleyne and notorious businessman Sheron Sukhdeo made headlines in February after his wife took to social media to post several photos purporting to show evidence of domestic assault over the years. In fact, it was because of this incident that Ian
Alleyne and Inspector Alexander crossed paths at Sheron’s home leading to the “Ranks Ting” debacle. Many praised his wife Rachael, for her brave stance saying she was an inspiration to others who faced domestic abuse. However, several months later Rachael dropped the charges saying that she and her husband had reconciled and that he vowed to change. This resulted in lots of ire on social media with many saying she gave false hope to victims. Others commended her dedication to her marital vows. We just, swiped, clicked and watched. Rankin Kia Boss Comes Out The impact of Kia Jadeana Hosein aka Rankin Kia Boss on Trinidad’s social media landscape cannot be underestimated. The transgender vlogger quickly became famous by going head to head with controversial talktalent Rachel Price online. Also, it is not often people see transgender personalities move so unabashedly in our reserved republic. It created heavy dialogue leading Kia to amass over 21,000 fans on instagram, with double those followers on Facebook in just a few months. A true game-

changer, Kia even altered the way we speak. The terms “Drama dem” and “Doh Run Slack” have become a regular part of local urban lexicon while the word “whole” has been made into a new monster entirely due to Kia’s usage of it. Kia parlayed this fame into a 91.9FM radio show and the release of a soca tune entitled “Doh Run Slack.” It seems Kia will be around a whooole lot longer than we expected. The Ellis Effect Everyone loves a good turnaround or rags to riches story. We bounced along with Superblue when he bounced back into the limelight in 2013 with Fantastic Friday. Since then, we have had a few minor career revivals. Then, enter Uncle Ellis. Ellis was known for most of 2015 and a few years preceding it as a destitute man who would dance to the sounds played by street music merchants around Port of Spain. His unique gyrations and stomps outside of a popular food chain in the capital became entertainment for many. Videos of his dances – and people trying to mimic them – quickly spread across the web. Soon, established entertainers started taking him to their carnival gigs as a side act. However, he usually stole the show from them and it was not long before he had his own management. Uncle Ellis soon began touring and

even released one of the better soca releases (“I Doh Mind”) in late 2016, setting him up for continued success in 2017. Patrick Manning’s Death When he was alive, Patrick Augustus Mervyn Manning divided public opinion a great deal. When he faded into the afterlife on July 2nd 2016 it was evident that deep within, Trinbagonians loved Patrick Manning and his political legacy. Less than a decade ago, the country turned on him resulting in the most lopsided election defeat for the PNM in history. However, social networks were ablaze as they fondly made mention of the former Prime Minister before and after his obligatory state funeral. Many spoke of his achievements including the infrastructural development of the country’s capital and his introduction of free tertiary education for all. His funeral turned out to be a celebration and testament of his life as supporters from all around the Caribbean came to pay respects while a party atmosphere ensued in the streets. Movie goers get Bazodee It wouldn’t be an honest Year In Review of entertainment if we didn’t mention Machel Montano in some fashion. It says a lot, that this wasn’t regarded as Montano’s biggest year despite his winning the Road March again and also singing soca music for esteemed guests at the White House. However, he created the biggest buzz when he rode the 2
marketing machine of his longin –the- making film Bazodee onto screens across the diaspora. The Bollywood movie which also featured Natalie Perera and Bollywood icon Kabir Bedi regularly showed to sold out audiences and introduced us to another dimension of the Monk. West Indies World Cup Championship Propel Bravo’s “Champion” Few people around the world have been able to straddle the lanes of both sport and song successfully. NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal is possibly the most successful of the lot. Our own Dwayne Bravo cashed in on his worldwide cricket fame to put the music world in a vice grip with his ode to winning entitled Champion. His catchy song and dance got an extra boost when the West Indies cricket team won the ICC T20 World cup this year on home soil. Suffice it to say, the all-rounder cashed in big time. Akeem Has Golden Games Speaking of Champions Trinidad and Tobago were made a proud nation thanks to the exploits of Akeem Stewart at the 2016 Special Olympics in Rio. The T&T Paralympic athlete broke the world record twice in one night, with his final throw reaching 57.32 metres, winning gold for T&T. The Trinbago titan’s achievements were made all the more special in the wake of a disappointing outing by Trinidad and Tobago athletes at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics which took place just a month
ET&T • DECEMBER, 2016 • www.amgtt.com
before. What was arguably more disappointing is the lack of fanfare Stewart received upon returning to Trinidad by officials and the general public alike. Dick Inserted In Thema’s Place/Female Stars Bare Their Bods In Support Sticking with sports, who could forget the Thema Williams/Marisa Dick saga? The fiasco piqued the interest of the multitudes when in true Trinbagonian style it ticked the boxes of nepotism and corruption. Local gymnast Thema Williams was replaced by Canadian-born Marisa Dick at the eleventh hour to be our gymnastics representative in Rio. Thema claims this was after Trinidad and Tobago Gymnastics Federation tried to get rid of her on several occasions including one where she was brought to the Federation’s disciplinary committee after semi-nude photos of her emerged. The internet was buzzing and the buzz grew even louder when several celebrities showed support by appearing in an artfully done topless shoot hosted by Nikki Crosby. The situation was a long, messy one which involved lawyers and resignations. In the end, Dick got to represent T&T at Rio and Thema is holding out for some sort of redress after her dream was stolen from her. Bunji Receives Keys To Borough One of Arima’s most celebrated sons, entertainer Bunji Garlin (Ian Alvarez), was awarded the key
to the Royal Chartered Borough of Arima by His Worship Mayor George Hadeed. The mayor said that the award was for Garlin’s “outstanding contribution to the upliftment of the borough on the occasion of its 128th anniversary.” Though Bunji grew up in nearby Wallerfield; his family came from Calvary, Arima, which fulfilled his requirement as a Gens de Arime. This was strangely not one of the bigger moments on social media, but the mix of attention from online and traditional news sources give it its place on our Yearbook list. Apart from those ten highly talked about occurrences, there were some others that we simply do not have enough space to publish. For instance, who can forget members of parliament Faris Al-Rawi and Stuart Young performing at Divali Nagar (one far less credibly than the other). Or what about sexy soca sirens Patrice Roberts and Jo-Jo both getting knocked up at the same time by men who largely remain mysteries to the public. Amber Rose and Black Chyna took their twerking talents to Tribe during carnival while Chromatics ended the year aggressively as he waged lyrical war against Hollywood Sachy for allowing Young M.A. to insert a “No Local Rappers” clause in her performance rider for a December show. It was indeed a year to remember and one that will be difficult to say goodbye to. However, we are sure that 2017 will bring more buzzworthy events to the fore for ET&T to report to you.

CELEBRITIES SHARE BEST & WORST CHRISTMAS GIFT STORIES
W
hen it comes to Christmas gifts, it can be a total hit or miss, depending on who the gift giver is. Some local and regional celebrities shared with us some of the best and worst gifts they received. Jason Peru – Celebrity Chef (Trinidad) Always cooking up a storm, Chef Jason took the time to share with us both good and bad memories of Christmas celebrations in the past. Because my birthday is the 31st December, I tend to suffer from that one gift syndrome where you get your Christmas and birthday gift in one. Now this sucks and is a total travesty. Nevertheless I have still managed to collect some really cool gifts along the way as well as some really peculiar ones. My best Christmas gift came from my dad in the year 2002 when he bought me a Nissan Wingroad for me to go back and forth from school. This was the start of my freedom and moving solo as this opened up so many reasons for me to pick up myself and head out, not to mention a lot of trysts with female counterparts lol. As far as really bad Christmas gifts, I recall once when someone gave me a Popsicle / lolly maker to basically fill with some kool aid and freeze. I mean come on, really? Another unfortunate scenario was when my mum gave me a clothes hanger stand to hang out my clothes in my room. Seriously Mum, a clothes hanger for Chef Jason? And she was like "but J, I thought it would come in handy to hang all your Chef jackets on lol. Ok, maybe it was really thoughtful, but for Christmas? lol...
most now. For a long time Christmas was the holiday I looked forward to the least. Simply because I always spent it alone. That in itself was the worst gift. However, over the last couple years that has changed for the better, I have a family of my own now, friends that I love and respect, so Christmas is not as empty as it used to be. To me THAT! is the BEST gift ever! #friendsandfamily. #iD Merry Christmas from Ricardo Drue & the #iDnation

Problem Child (St Vincent) Despite his stage name, Problem Child is indeed humble about receiving gifts. He shared with us the following: I don't really believe that there are any bad gifts. The mere fact that someone remembered me to give me whatever they can afford is a gift in itself. Even though I couldn't find use for the dice I received in a gift exchange once (lol) I still accepted it & laughed. The best gift I've ever received is probably a Macbook pro. Not based on the price or anything but because I was so in need of one at the time. It was the timing that made it the best.
Peter Ram (Barbados) He may have expressed a need to have a woman by his side but Peter Ram was also very appreciative of receiving his first pair of Louis Vuitton shoes as a Christmas gift in the years gone by. Here’s what he had to say, “The best Christmas gift I ever received was my first pair of Louis Vuitton shoes. As for the worst Christmas gift received, I can't really think of anything that was ever given to me that I wasn't appreciative of.”

READERS SHARE THEIR FAVOURITE TRINI CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS
lmost everyone has a special tradition they partake in for Christmas. We asked our fans to chime in with theirs and this is what some of them had to say.
Avinash and Ihlan Growing up it was always a big event for the Christmas tree to be pulled out from under the bed. I loved putting up the decorations with my family while listening to local Parang. It always welcomed the season for me, so when I had a son of my own I wanted to make it special in the same way for him. He’s only 1 and may not remember much, but in future he will look forward to it and it will become his family tradition!
Satya My family pops a special brand of champagne every Christmas. Jill My tradition is going from house to house between family and friends for quality time with food and drinks.
Shaheed Abdullah Upon introspection I think going to church with my mom was the most special tradition. Varesha Ramnath I absolutely LOVE Christmas! Of course Trini Christmas is the best, but with a Muslim mom, I don't get ham. What do I get? Curry Duck and Dhalpourie for breakfast! There’s the usual turkey and pastelles and homemade bread, but must have curry for breakfast, after all, it's Christmas!! Rhema My Christmas tradition consists of putting up the Christmas tree and cooking Christmas treats. 12 ET&T • DECEMBER, 2016 • www.amgtt.com
Gervais Dattoo My Christmas traditions start on Christmas Eve with my family and I heading to church then back home for granny's freshly baked bread, turkey and stuffing for dinner. On Christmas morning, my family comes over for breakfast and we then exchange presents around our tree with a celebratory glass of wine or champagne. Khasana I love how everyone traditionally comes together for that day. The best for me is just being around family... the people you enjoy.
Kendra Kissoon My Christmas traditions are, making breakfast with my family and close friends and sitting together at the table, looking back at the old days, exchanging stories and experiences and giving thanks to the Lord almighty for where we are today and where he will take us in the future. Also, in the days leading up to Christmas we take family trips to the mall, home stores, flea markets and hardware stores to get the house decorated for a whole new look. Lastly, but equally favourite is visiting my closest friend, who is like family, for Christmas dinner and parang.

ay Ann Lyons Alvarez needs no introduction. Like seriously, she doesn’t. Therefore, we will skip all the history and go straight to her Christmas message for our readers during this holiday season. She states a pointed belief in unity through good old-fashioned human interaction and posits that there is no better time than Christmas to foster these experiences. “The point of Christmas must be preserved. The next generation must be taught traditions that will add to their prosperity, from a spiritual and human perspective. Food, and a table attended by loved ones, tends to foster these ideologies; as conversations that strengthen bonds are often present at the dining table. Eat with those you love.” Not only did the beautiful bard speak of coming together at the table, she was wonderful enough to share some of her great holiday recipes with us as well. W
e have been inviting him into our home at exactly 7:00 p.m. since 2009. But how much do we really know about CNC3 News Anchor and Multimedia Journalist, Khamal Georges. ET&T set out to dish the details. ET&T: How did you get into journalism? Khamal Georges: I always enjoyed writing and telling stories. My mom is an English teacher, so I also had to enjoy reading. Luckily, I did. I remember studying business and struggling, it just wasn't for me. After school, I worked at a telemarketing firm - hated it…then at a small airline - loved it. I guess the third time's the charm. I landed a job as a reporter at a small television station in Dominica where I grew up and the rest is history. I had found something I was passionate about. ET&T: What would you have been had you not pursued journalism? Khamal Georges: That's easy - an Aviation engineer or pilot. Technically, I'm already a pilot if you consider the number of hours I've racked up on infinite flight (flight simulator). ET&T: Who are your mentors in the business? Khamal Georges: John Babb, Therese Mills, Hazel Ward, Holly Betaudier. Wait a minute, those are the President's. Oh no he didn't! Jokes aside, I would have to say Rosemarie Sant. I've learned a lot working under her. When I moved to CNC3 on June 4, 2009, she took me under her wing and really molded me into the journalist I am today. Some days, especially these days, I feel I'm not being the journalist
E&T DISHES ON KHAMAL GEORGES because of your fame? If so, how do you deal with it? Khamal Georges: Fame? What attention? How do I deal with what? I see where you're going with this question, but a lot of people come up to me in the street or message on Facebook. People who like what we do at CNC3, people who do think we don't do enough, people with story ideas. They're not just women. I'm just happy they're watching the news, no matter who's at the desk. It's great for society when you have well informed citizens and that's what we try to do.
she saw in me. But I hope she's proud, nevertheless. These days I find counsel in my good friend Golda Lee Bruce as well.
ET&T: Can you remember the first time you were a part of the on air CNC3 news team? Can you recount the experience? Khamal Georges: Like it was yesterday. It was the night of the budget of 2013. What were they thinking? Can you imagine screwing the news up on budget night? (Face palm) I was nervous… excited. I felt the enormity of it. Seigonie and I debuted that night, but the thing I remember the most was the support from my colleagues. These days, Golda does not have to complete my sentences when I freeze mid-sentence. ET&T: What do you fear? Khamal Georges: Other than centipedes, not achieving my full potential. Failure. ET&T: Who inspires you? Khamal Georges: My grandfather and my beloved granny (May her soul rest in peace). They taught me the importance of hard work, honesty and always remaining grounded. They taught me love. ET&T: What’s your favorite ‘go to’ place? Khamal Georges: I don't go enough, but home. ET&T: What’s the most exciting thing about doing live TV? Khamal Georges: Live TV. ET&T: What’s the most borderline terrifying thing about doing live television? Khamal Georges: When it's fast approaching 7 p.m. and the producer says to you that not a single story is ready for broadcast. It happens more often than you think.
ET&T: Do you have a special lady in your life? Khamal Georges: Right now, no.
ET&T: What are you doing when you are not covering a story or reading the news?
ET&T: How do you keep fit? Khamal Georges: This job is enough stress to keep you fit and drive you mad. Let me see, I run the Savannah a few times a year, but seriously though, I just started back at the gym. I also like hiking, but I certainly don't do it enough.
Khamal Georges: Thinking about the stories I should be covering. I love a good book, Netflix, cricket occasionally, exploring Trinidad…I've been told I can cook, I do that sometimes.
ET&T: If you could only eat at one restaurant every day for the rest of the year where would it be? Khamal Georges: Golda says Breakfast Shed, but I'm going to say Prime…only because you guys are footing the bill. ET&T: Do the stories you read make you emotional at times? Khamal Georges: Yes. A lot of my colleagues will tell you this. This job desensitizes you, but some stories tug at your emotions in ways you don't expect...you just have to swallow hard and keep on reading. ET&T: Do you get a lot of attention from females
ET&T: Leave us with your fondest Christmas memory. Khamal Georges: It's not often my family gets together at Christmas like we used to when I was a little boy. But there was always a buzz, an excitement around Christmas. It was the one time of the year everyone would gather at my grandparents’ house. The best part was being in the company of my uncles, aunts, cousins, grandma and grandpa, my mom and other relatives and we would do things together... Help prepare meals, clean, play games in the yard, or just huddle and listen to stories, or roll on the floor at my uncle's jokes. They're still great at making you laugh till it hurts. It was a simple Christmas, but it was always full of love and in those moments we were our happiest.

TOUCHÉ
lam God and associates delivered on their promise of an epic ultra-inclusive experience when they hosted TouG ché at the uber swanky Estate 101 during the final quarter
of 2016. Entertainment was provided by a strong cast of mix-masters and MCs including Rapid Response, Assassin, Jahmoun, Dangerous Robin and Private Ryan. Guests at the pink-themed affair dined on a variety of cuisine and eased the food down with some of the finest local and international spirits available. The party was a great preview to what we heard might be followed up by a Carnival event. Here are some photos from the event. For more, check ET&T on Facebook.

nce those Christmas bells start to jingle, that’s usually the cue to mingle. That’s exactly what L&M Entertainment facilitated with O their aptly named Mingle yacht-ride aboard the Embassy. The cooler
party was well supported as patrons packed on to the boat to be entertained by the likes of S. Carter, Akeem Reloaded and Clyde D Outlaw. Less than an hour into the festivities partiers were soaking wet as they grooved the night away. ET&T was there for this fiesta and we have the pics to prove it. FPT PRESENTS THINGS WE NEED TO STOP IN 2017
his hasn’t been one of Trinidad and Tobago’s best years where crime is concerned. In fact, a lot of things have spiraled out of control. The country is in recession and jobs are hard to come by. All of these things have effects on the fashion landscape. However, those things do not constitute a reason to break the fashion laws. You can still be simple, effective and fashion forward with a low budget. We hope to see the fashion climate change as we head into the New Year. For that to happen, these things need to stop.
Mistaking lingerie for beachwear… Don’t wear your “sexy” pajamas to the people boatrides (unless of course it is a pajama party).
Combining belts with suspenders… If you really need all that support you should probably call social services.
Visible body powder… leave the fish fry vibes to Oistins.
Barefoot Bubbling… If you are looking for comfort, try some simple ballet flats. You trying to get jigger?
Oversized Clothing… The 90’s called… It says it wants its jeans back.
Undersized clothing… Bruh… those pants might give you a yeast infection.
Saggin pants… Is it really that important that we see your boxers?
Pants without belts… This is cool for joggers, and other such pants without loops, but dude… really?
This… Whatever that is, we need to stop it.

MOVIES
CHRISTMAS MOVIES
W
hat better to watch at Christmas than Christmas movies? Here are two of them that are available for your viewing. Office Christmas Party When his uptight CEO sister threatens to shut down his branch, the branch manager throws an epic Christmas party in order to land a big client and save the day, but the party gets way out of hand. Kate McKinnon,
Olivia Munn, Jennifer Aniston and Jamie Chung star in this Josh Gordon film. Bad Santa 2 Fueled by cheap whiskey, greed and hatred, Willie teams up once again with his angry little sidekick, Marcus, to knock off a Chicago charity on Christmas Eve. Academy Award winner Kathy Bates teams up with Billy Bob Thornton and Tony Cox for this comedy sequel.
MUSIC
4 ODDLY OVERLOOKED CHRISTMAS ALBUMS F
ew things have the ability to give the holiday season that extra boost like music. Hearing traditional Christmas classics filter through the air lends a magical spirit to festivities. There are some staple albums we go to for those tunes, such as the “Jackson 5 Christmas”, “Scrunter’s D Parang Now Start” and “Mariah Carey’s Merry Christmas.” However, there are some overlooked albums that should be in every music-lover’s home.
Christmas Interpretations by Boyz II Men One would wonder how it is possible for a Boyz II Men album to be overlooked. Well, not many people own this 1993 gem and few of the songs get spins. However, it’s really solid and features several original tracks, written by the group and label mate Brian McKnight along with cover versions of traditional Christmas songs. Home For Christmas, *NSYNC NSYNC's second album was a US-only Christmas release. Because of its limited release, a lot of people around the world have overlooked its existence. However, it’s pretty darn good. 28 ET&T • DECEMBER, 2016 • www.amgtt.com
James Brown’s Funky Christmas The King of Funk might have done a lot of crazy things, but his music was always on point. However, his album was criminally overlooked by many. That’s why his collection of funky, soul-laced jams makes this list.
John Denver and the Muppets: A Christmas Together If you think the Alvin & The Chipmunks Christmas album is cool, this will blow you away. It’s full of great songs with great added comedy flair.
