arnival babies! We can finally enjoy an almost 10-week long lead up to Carnival 2017, as compared to the short seasons in years gone by. Many of us have already studied that fete schedule hard: our weekends are planned out to the T, tickets almost inhand, outfits sourced and designated drivers in a gear. But how does Soca 2017 measure up? There are mixed reviews, some argue that there are just a few songs dominating the airwaves. Machel fans seem to be disappointed too: with just a few weeks to go and nothing heard yet to blaze that trail. DJ Kern of Superior Sounds notes two trends in this year’s Soca offering. He says that in relation to Soca 2016, there are definitely more up tempo songs that are bringing vibes to the fetes. He says that the songs are now “in between” traditional Power Soca that has 160 beats and Groovy Soca that carries 105-120 beats. The focus is more on Electronic Dance Music with beats between 130-135 beats. Indeed, EDM is taking over: that percussive electronic music genre made largely for nightclubs, raves and festivals has been slowly infiltrating our own art form. In recent years these catchy beats could be heard in Kerwin DuBois’ and Kess’ Hits. But this year it’s Ultimate Rejects’ “Full Extreme”: it has already been declared the people’s anthem for Carnival 2017. MX Prime says he was inspired by calypsonian Shadow when he wrote it, and it is definitely evocative of late 80s/early 90s Soca, which has been described as the golden age of the genre. Destra’s “Run Road” utilizes heavy EDM content as well. While it is still early, he says that these songs are being promoted, get the most air play and have the best reaction in parties. He also observes that songs with proper storylines are gaining popularity- for example Orlando Octave’s “Single” and Famer

Nappy and Destra’s “Technically.” They have the ability to gain popularity because listeners can relate to the sometimes funny yet awfully truthful statements. Indeed Trinbagonians are demanding better quality lyrics, away from the “jump and wave” and “wine back” norm. ET&T also spoke exclusively with Chucky Gordon. His take is that music is a reflection of what is going on countrywide. He thinks that artistes need to guide society including its emotional and psychological state, not just recreationally. He believes that they have the power to influence mood and sentiments, and the media should help promote, guide and support society on substantial issues not just recreation. He says that the arts and culture is an important "conduit" through which that balance is struck. ETNT chatted with 5 Star Akiel who observed that most songs cater for the state of the economy. People need happy songs to uplift them in these trying times. I’m sure most of us agree that when we are lost in that euphoria in the middle of a fete, it doesn’t matter what is in the backgroundbut we definitely feel that hype when our favorite jam comes on. So have fun, we all know Soca 2017 is far from finished. www.amgtt.com •

STAG RIDDIM IV: THE SOUND OF CARNIVAL

Kevin 'Stadic' Charles

O

ne listen to the Stag Riddim IV which features some of the biggest soca stars: Bunji, Jaiga, Lyrikal and KI, instantly makes you feel to get up and move your body to the rhythm and beat. The musical combination can be described as ‘Road Soca’ a traditional Soca vibe with its signature melodies while yet still projecting that modern Soca "on the road" jam. Furthermore, it is expected to have soca fans both locally and internationally chipping to the sweet beat of the riddim during the Carnival season. The producer, Kevin ‘Stadic’ Charles said, “When STAG came to me, their vision was of a sound that truly embodied Carnival… the traditional party spirit embodied by revelers on the road.” He further shared that the creative process wasn't that challenging since “the cast and brand manager for the project had set forth a set of specific guidelines for the riddim with respect to final sound of the 2

beat. With that in mind it was quite easy for me to zone in on what they wanted me to capture in the production.” As for what the artistes brought to the project; Charles said “Bunji Garlin brought that rugged element to the project via his unique voice and lyrical content. His track entitled "Reload" is geared to the true cooler fete limers. Heading from fete to fete, lime to lime never letting that cooler go empty.” On the other hand, Jaiga brings a somewhat mischievous energy to the project. His track "nah leaving" speaks to the inner partier/ limer who is never ready to leave the fete, or lime KI brings more of a mellow, saga boy vibe to the project. His track "Wuk On Yuh" directly targets women promoting them work, work, work in the fete. Lastly, Lyrikal brings an unmistakable swag to the project. He also focuses his attention to the feminine gender encouraging them to work their lives away.” STAG’s brand manager, She-

hann Caruth also shared his thoughts on the riddim by saying, “the STAG Riddim IV is a celebration of authentic soca music, pure and energetic. At 130bpm, with big drums and infectious synth lines, it mimics traditional soca sounds while projecting the energy and vibe that STAG brings to Trinidad and Tobago carnival.” If you have not heard the Riddim yet, be sure to check it out on Stag’s Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/stagamansbeer/app/178091127385/ The Production notes and music credits are listed below. 01. LOCAL D’ CHANCELLOR BRINGS FORTH NEWS CARNIVAL 2017 TRACK “WAJANK” Keston ‘D’ Chancellor’ Harris

T

he word ‘Wajank’ is a slang which originated in Trinidad and Tobago and is defined as a person who acts in an irresponsible or reckless manner. For Carnival 2017, Soca artiste Keston ‘D’ Chancellor’ Harris will be encouraging the masses to channel their inner wajank with his latest J’ouvert-centric release. ‘Wajank’ was written by D’ Chancellor and produced by 'Scrappy Da Rydhim God'. According to the New Jerseybased singer-songwriter, the inspiration behind the track was derived from a conversation with his sister in which they reminisced about the unique local slangs used during their youth growing up in Trinidad. This trip down memory lane combined with his passion for the Carnival Monday celebration of J’ouvert birthed this new track which invokes a spirit of freedom and no holds barred, full-spirited

enjoyment in the ‘dirty mas’ festivities. D’ Chancellor who originally hails from Marabella, South Trinidad shared that ‘Wajank’ has been receiving positive feedback since its release due to its infectiousness and iron-filled instrumental. He noted that although from a young age he was influenced mainly by Reggae and Dancehall music and primarily sang those genres at the start of his professional music career, he quickly re-discovered his love for creating

and performing Soca. He credits his mother (who actually helped him to pen his first song for a primary school Calypso competition) as his main motivation for pursuing his passion for the indigenous music of his homeland. The often calm, laid back, family-oriented Soca singer considers himself to be very enthusiastic about his music and quite critical about himself as an artiste. He currently uses this creative and critical nature to compose music for other artistes in a

variety of genres. Some of D’ Chancellor’s past performance highlights include appearances at Carib Fever, The 9th Annual New Jersey Reggae Fest, “Undercover Promotions” J’ouvert Band launching as well as opening for several top industry acts such as: Machel Montano, Patrice Roberts, Benjai, Beenie Man, Beres Hammond, Buju Banton and Rick Ross. Most notably, the ‘Wajank’ singer had the pleasure of working with former Groovy Soca Monarch Kerwin Dubois after winning his ‘Pressure Cooker Competition’ with the single “Heat”. D’ Chancellor has high hopes for Wajank’s success during the Carnival 2017 season and aspires to continually expand his fan base, build a massive presence for himself and his music, have a very successful career and leave his mark on the Soca industry. LOCAL PARTY AMBASSADOR JULIEN BELIEVE NEWS HOPES TO INSPIRE THROUGH MUSIC

B

ahamian star looks to go global with his variation on

soca. Julien Believe is a Nassau Bahamas Native who spent several years in the United States where he followed his love, music. Previously solely an R&B singer, his talents saw him open for the likes of Sean Paul, Brian McKnight, Destiny's Child, Joe, Mariah Carey and Babyface. Now, the artiste is more in tune with his roots and is beginning to make waves in the Caribbean with a new localized fusion sound. His fast-growing tune “Party Ambassadors” is an example of the impact he can have on the Carnival circuits and with a marketable look and bubbly demeanor one can only expect the rising star to get bigger... fast! While his “Party Ambassadors” single is energetic and fete-centric, it would be remiss to dismiss the artiste’s expansive vocal range and ability. He came from an R&B background, where he listened to a staple of Boyz II Men and Brian Mc Knight among other bards. As fate would have it, the first people he ever opened for was Boyz II Men. One just has to listen to his older hit single “Be-

lieve” and it would shed light on how much those singers influence him. However, Julien’s Caribbean roots came calling and it wasn’t long before he started dedicating his time and effort into creating songs with Soca-tinged flair. Now, Julien is growing from festival to festival and is one of his country’s biggest artistes. Julien expressed that the Bahamian music scene is not as large as other Caribbean markets, but that is changing due to the evolution of Junkanoo (Bahamian Carnival) which has seen bigger artists such Machel Montano and Destra headline in the last couple of years. Julien is capitalizing on this impetus as he seeks to build his brand and take Caribbean music further. He believes this is no easy task as many Bahamians view music as a hobby since there

is no real music industry there. However, the artiste remains undaunted and despite these limitations has made leaps and bounds with his career. For instance, his blazing new track Party Ambassadors features appearances from Ricardo Drue, Fadda Fox and Beenie Man. He owes these collaborations to a dedication to networking. He hooked up with Drue and Fadda Fox at Carnival where he convinced them to collaborate. He then brazenly approached the King of Dancehall at a concert where he played a snippet of a track he did with Bunji for Beenie Man. Ten seconds into the listening session Beenie Man agreed to feature on party Ambassadors citing that if Bunji could work with Julien so could he.

It would be easy to say Julien Believe is lucky, but he has devoted over 15 years of his life to singing so far. In fact, the artiste passed up on a basketball scholarship to Oklahoma in order to pursue his passion for music. Believe made it clear that his basketball skills have not diminished and stated that he believes he is the best celebrity basketball player in the Caribbean (Something he is willing to prove at any time). Back to the music, Julien hopes to continue to expand his brand as he joins the quest to take Caribbean music beyond our shores on a large scale. Key to this achievement would be accomplishing his goals of keeping his team together and developing a bigger market for Bahamian music. His parting words were to “If you have a dream, pursue it.” which is no doubt derived from his father’s regular bit of advice which said “It doesn't cost a thing to think BIG.” He definitely has us believing. Follow the Julien Believe movement across all forms of social media to keep connected with this star.

ollowing the release of his acclaimed, Machel Montano cosigned “Something To Believe In” EP with Jay Nahge and Jimmy October, Hip-Hop producer DLL has no intention of slowing down as he revealed a major project in the works. The Arima beatsmith spoke exclusively with ET&T about a recently recorded single which features seven of T&T’s top rappers over DLL’s signature production. Chromatics, Jimmy October, Jay Nahge, Lil Saint, Mark Hardy and Yung Rudd all spit verses on the track which is entitled “Say No More.” DLL shared that all of the artistes recorded together and the

process was an organic one where he was pleased to see everyone gel so smoothly. DLL further went on to describe the song as “A hit” which bears sonic similarities to Rihanna’s “Pour It Up.” DLL said the inspiration for the Khaled-like track was to show people that artistes could unite and do a big record. He likened the effort to what Studio 53 accomplished when they took local reggae to new heights with multiple artistes on each song. Apart from producing the aforementioned single DLL has also recently produced for several artistes internationally who have been blazing on social media circuits. Klass Money’s Good

MODEL MANIA

Name: Afeya Aneisha Jeffrey Age: 24 Hometown: Gonzales Village, Guapo Hobbies: Dance, fitness, running, travelling, movies, dining and reading inspirational books. Career: Student Physiotherapist,

Aerobics Instructor, Dance Teacher If one was to use an adjective to describe Afeya Jeffrey, the first thing that would probably come to mind is “Ambitious.” The experienced dancer and choreographer has goals of establishing her very own Dance and Wellness Center which focuses not just on fitness but holistic health. She also hopes to have a nonprofit animal sanctuary at some point. However, her short-term goal is to be a fitness model. The fitness-crazy beauty has used her affinity for image consciousness well having held the Prestigious title of Miss Trinidad

and Tobago Carnival Queen 2015. Afeya also placed 2nd runner up in the Miss TT World pageant 2014. She admits that she hopes to make one more attempt at gaining the coveted title. These accomplishments are undoubtedly special since Ms. Jeffrey only began modeling professionally in 2013. In that time she has worked with photographers such as Calvin French, Elijah Thompson and Butch Limchoy. She has even been used in a print ad for Bang Bang at Long Circular Mall. This model is very fashion forward and has great love for lo-

cal designers. Zadd and Eastman, Kerr and Marcelle and Patterson Nelson are her favourites. She also admires the work of Guyanese, Jason Shurland. In terms of what she does not like; animal cruelty, selfishness, dishonesty and lack of humility top her pet peeves. To maintain her fit physique, this model mixes dance sessions with daily two hour workouts and adheres to a strict low carb, high protein pescatarian diet. We look forward to seeing more of this example of ebony beauty in the future.

eading the pack with his hit single “Single”, Orlando Octave is riding a wave of success in the tide of Carnival 2017, thrilling his loyal fans and possessing the voices and waistlines of lots more locally, regionally and internationally. At 27 years, he admits that this is his best moment yet after being in the business for 18 years, “…every artiste knows what they deserve. It is a wonderful feeling to know that I am finally getting the acknowledgement…It is a good feeling to know that after all those years your work did not go to waste.” As regards the instant popularity of the song and its continued momentum, he shared that the topic of the song, which deals with the ‘single like’ behaviour of females in committed relationships outside of the presence of

ORLANDO OCTAVE STANDING SINGLE AND APART FROM THE PACK FOR CARNIVAL 2017

their mates, is both easily identifiable and interesting given the played out topics usually addressed by Soca artistes in song. Of his chosen topic he said, “It’s real and I have been trying to let the public know that I would be attacking the real issues that we tend to bypass…how many times can you sing about bumper… Carnival... wining…waving a rag! There are other issues that go on even during the Carnival, so I think that the fact that this song deals with a topic that nobody has ever touched before makes it stand out.” Acknowledging that there are guys who act just like the women he sings about, he further added that while some persons might be hesitant to admit that that their girl acts likes she is single, social media had made it quite

14 ET&T • JANUARY, 2017 • www.amgtt.com

apparent that many victims exist in reality given the amount of persons who share their feelings daily via their statuses. The situation he says lends itself to lots of bacchanal and confusion as it is very difficult to prove this type of relationship crime, “…everybody going through this you know… everybody would ask me if my girl is acting like if she single. I would like for a guy to really let me know if his girl is acting single.” With musical influences inclusive of Betty Wright, Bunji Garlin, Cyndi Lauper, Super Cat, Dawg E. Slaughter, Marcia Griffith, General Grant, chutney and Dil E Nadan, Orlando explained that his natural tendency to sing reggae, dancehall, R&B and freestyle would in no way be affected by the success of “Single,” a soca track, “…music deals with emotions and

I am a human being so there are times where I would feel sad and I would write a song about being depressed and at that moment in time I would let that emotion flow into my music. Soca releases one emotion, one expression, which is happiness and party. To only sing Soca it would mean cheating myself or stifling that emotion or just limiting myself to that particular thing. My best expression is music and for me to release some of my emotions I need to do that musically. I don’t talk about my emotions much. I can’t speak of the way I feel.” “Single” was written by Orlando with assistance from Emmanuel Rudder, Romi and Dale Ryan and produced by Central Records. However along with those persons he wished to publicly thank Penco Music, Young Kings,

CHIT CHAT Vonique, his parents, friends, family and loved ones. Emphasizing that he devoutly practices Hebrew Israelite traditions, he especially acknowledged the Most High for bringing him thus far. While he was contemplative as to whether he would release any additional music for Carnival 2017, he assured that a video was on its way. As regards the Soca monarch, he confessed that he did not like competition but if the fans pushed him enough he would enter. As for a bumper Carnival and a hectic schedule, his coping strategy was set to include a combination of healthy eating, fitness and plenty of rest. However while expressing an infectious humility and optimism he lamented the reluctance of older more seasoned artistes to promote younger talents and the culture at large. Using the examples of American rapper 50 Cent and Jamaican dancehall artiste, Bounty Killer, he identified their track record of promoting an entire team, “You have a platform! I don’t know like some of these Soca artistes feel like they will be on top forever. That cannot be! Who are our local icons bringing forward?…and then now they making the Soca music a hustle music and anybody feeling that they could sing and anybody want to drop a tune and there is no standard. Everybody feel that this is just a fly by night thing. Anybody you talk to have a song and this is total madness…nobody have respect for the craft and then now anybody would feel like an artiste not doing nothing so special, ‘I could do that! I coming and sing a song!’ and then after it would result in people not wanting to pay the artiste. You see the domino effect?” And for the important question he knew he could not have avoided as regards his relationship status his simple response was, “to disclose that to the females, I rather leave them thinking.” Surely if that special person exists she might just be checking her behaviour while socializing as well as the artiste himself. www.amgtt.com •

TOURING: A MANAGER’S POINT OF VIEW

1.

Life on tour means you’re regularly on a plane

T

ouring is a major part of an entertainer’s income, especially since the sales of music diminished in the latter part of this decade. Most artists focus primarily on making their stage performance stand out as much as possible; in order to do that, having a great touring team in essential. The team would normally consist of a Touring Dj, Manager, assistants, videographer, band members (if there is a band). For this to work effectively the touring manager or managers need to be very organized, have a warm personality, be a serious person, be diligent and also patient. The touring manager is in charge of organizing flight schedules, ground transport, per diem, hotel accommodations, and necessary visas for each country or territory. They double check all information ensuring that the entire team is always well prepared and has all the required information. They also double check all information such as expiry dates of passports/ necessary visas & work permits needed to travel for work purposes. Contracts & Rider It’s the Touring Manager’s responsibility to make sure the contract and rider is enforced. For each show there must be a contract and rider signed. These

agreements must be signed in order to protect the artist and travel party for said event. The Rider is made up of an Hospitality and a Technical rider. A Technical rider comprises the technical requirements and equipment needed for the artiste to have a successful show and to give their best performance. A Hospitality rider includes all necessary requirements like ground transport, drinks, towels, passes, dimensions to dressing rooms and other arrangements to make the artiste and company

as comfortable as possible before showtime. The touring manager must ensure the contracts are enforced and if they are not fulfilled, the manager must be a problem solver and make sure the artist and travel party are as comfortable as possible. Determined to build on her momentum, the former Traffik vocalist says she is working harder than ever on developing her skillset. ET&T caught up with the beautiful talent to catch up on this process. ET&T: Was it a surprise to you to win 2016 Breakout Artiste? Jadel: Yes of course. I didn’t know I would have gotten that amount of votes. I guess I campaigned to the best of my ability. ET&T: Do you feel any additional pressure to create because of the Breakout title? Jadel: Yes the need to step up was imminent. It had the immediate effect of making me want to do better in 2016. ET&T: What measures have you taken to improve your craft over the years? Jadel: I did a lot of observation and learning. ET&T: Share a bit about your offerings for 2017. Jadel: Take Control was written by me and produced by Peter Coppin from Monstapiece Productions. It’s a mid-tempo groovy song with a Bajan bashment feel. D Band is a power soca written by Legacy’s Michael “Big Mike” Antoine and myself. Big Mike being a masman was able to construct and direct everything for a song for the road for the band for mas. It was produced by Maha Productions.

ET&T: A lot of artistes have been singing EDM and other genres and calling it soca. An EDM song even won the Road March. Your sound is more authentic soca. How do you feel about the direction the music has taken? Jadel: I support all types of soca once it is for the betterment of the artform and for recognition internationally. If it’s creative, i love it. ET&T: Do you think you get the respect you deserve from fans and fellow artistes? Jadel: Yes. I got respect for what I have given and put out. It is all a learning and observing experience for me. I’m grateful for each experience. If I did not get much airplay in the past, perhaps it was because I needed to better my craft. That is something I am continually doing.

(lmao)... reading books and art (design, painting and drawing). ET&T: What do you think are the components of a hit song? Jadel: Concept, repetitive hook, extra-sweet infections melodies, networking, marketing, the beat, the percussion…drums, or a signature piece in the music.

ET&T: You’ve said in the past that fitness and cooking are some of your favourite pastimes. Do you have any other hobbies we may not know about? Jadel: Travelling… spending time with siblings… taking selfies

ET&T: If you would change anything about the industry what would it be? Jadel: I’d love to see more airplay for the upcoming artistes. I already see certain stations are trying to provide a platform as we speak.

ET&T: What’s next for Jadel? A song after the season maybe? Jadel: Yes. I will also be continuing my audio engineering, doing some song writing and working in my little home studio set up personal development. www.amgtt.com • JANUARY, 2017 • ET&T 17

I UP: SOCA X SUNRISE

high heading into the event. Fortunately for both parties, the event did not disappoint. The masses that showed up to Pier 1 for the cooler party jumped, pranced and sang away the morning to a strong entertainment cast. The mixed crowd allowed for the event to be entertaining without being overly wild and at times it genuinely felt like a fete from back in the good old days. Here is a peek at some of the action. STUMPED

oolers came in by the hundreds and people came C in by the thousands to ensure no cooler left filled. The event was Stumped - one of the most popu-

lar cooler parties known to T&T carnival - and the patrons and entertainers at the Queens Park Oval showed why the event is so epic every year. Machel Montano was one of the many performers who had the party swinging and the Ultimate Rejects made sure that even after the Oval was closed people were jamming still on their way home. ET&T was at this extravaganza and as far as we are concerned it was one to remember.

BLACK 2 BLUE 8

n January 14th, some of the biggest O artistes in the region converged to bring the southland to life for Black 2

Blue 8. Promoted by Illusionmas, the event was dubbed the biggest Cooler Breakfast party of Carnival. While it is still early in the season, it would be very hard for any other promoter to beat that claim. Superb early season performances, coupled with an energetic crowd made for a vibe-filled experience that left patrons wanting more at the end. The dust probably hasn’t settled at Skinner’s Park yet. Here are some the event's more serene moments as captured by our photographers. For more, check us out on Facebook.

SOKA IN MOKA XVIII

EVENTS EXTRA n January 15th, Trinity College, Moka was again the venue for one of Carnival’s O most esteemed early events, Soka in Moka.

The all-inclusive affair ran from 4-11pm and featured one of the most diverse performance sets you will see in a fete. From its inception, this event was aimed solely at assisting the development of Trinity College. With the large turnout of support, we are sure that the event will have contributed a lot to the future of the school. ET&T was present to see the mostly mature crowd party ever so hearty and relive their younger days while the younger section of the fete rocked out with reckless abandon among them. It was indeed a n evening to remember.

REGRESSION

umanity has made leaps and bounds H in many aspects of life. There has been stagnancy in others. There has even been regression in some. These are examples of regression.

We’re not trying to look for class in all the wrong places. However, this dude is the epitome of what we don’t want our young males to look like. Dude… please pull your pants up and get your style game in order.

The visible body powder thing has been mentioned here too many times to count. Men are even getting into the act now. No lie, males over the age of 3 walking around with visible body powder on the neck and chest. To make things abundantly worse, look at the manner in which he is wearing his pants. We guess he thinks it’s cool. That is evidence humanity is regressing.

CELEB PROFILE

COLIN KAEPERNICK

Name: Colin Rand Kaepernick Age: 28 (November 3, 1987) Profession: NFL Quarterback Claim to Fame: Colin Kaepernick is the running, gunning quarterback who led the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl in the 2012 season. He is also known for his controversial 2016 decision not to stand for the pre-game playing of the American national anthem. Colin was a mixed-race baby whose mother put him up for adoption. He was adopted at five weeks by Teresa and Rick Kaeper-

nick and spent his early childhood in the town of Fond du Lac, about an hour from Milwaukee. Kaepernick eventually grew up in Turlock, California, and went the University of Nevada at Reno. He thrived at the small school, starting all four of his active seasons. He became the only player in NCAA history to throw for over 10,000 yards and rush for over 4000 yards. He graduated in December of 2010 with a degree in business management. Months later, Colin Kaepernick was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He was the 36th pick overall, being chosen after the 49ers made a trade with the Denver Broncos to move up. After backing up starter Alex Smith for one and a half seasons, Kaepernick got his first start on 19 November 2012, against the Chicago Bears, when Smith was held out after a concussion in

the previous game. Smith never got his job back, as San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh made Colin Kaepernick the starter the rest of the way. Kaepernick responded by leading the 49ers to Super Bowl XLVII at the end of that season, where they lost to the Baltimore Ravens, 34-31. However, he struggled in subsequent seasons, losing his starting job to journeyman Blaine Gabbert during the 2015 season. Before a preseason game against

the Green Bay Packers on August 26, 2016, Colin Kaepernick raised eyebrows by refusing to stand for the national anthem, later saying "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."
