EXPERTS SHARE C2K15 PREDICTIONS

es, we are aware that Christmas comes first and no, we aren’t rushing the brush, but we are already feeling ah feeling. Let’s face it if 2015 is fast approaching then it follows that Carnival is on the horizon and we all know that Carnival is something that one has to plan for. So why not stop with the denial and engage in some brief speculation about what we can expect for the next edition of the Greatest Show on Earth! So let’s get right into it! Carnival is as good as the music it produces. You know that ‘Vagabond’ song that you’ve been listening to, while conjuring images of bare backed men, running through a fete? Well that’s being sung by Ricardo Drue an up and comer in the soca landscape. Actually there seems to be a consensus that young blood, new artistes will get their turn to shine next year. According to Trevlyn from the popular 96.1 radio station, “the category for breakthrough artistes of the year should be very high and expect some unexpected collaborations as well. 2015 Carnival is going to be the year of great music.” Trevlyn also said that our listening attention may be peaked by Sekon Star and a Bhajan posse inclusive of Fadda Fox, King Bubba and Lead Pipe called Saddis who we are especially feeling. Junior K of 94.1 added Young Voice and Flipo – who actually grew in popularity after the Carnival season had ended - to that list. He also suggested that Shurwayne Winchester will have a hit heavy Carnival. According to Devon Mathews of Red 96.7 we might also want to look out for Romo and Nebula 868. He further added that “music will improve since soca is more recognized after the success of Bunji.” The ‘Groovy’ versus ‘Power’ debate continues. While Devon Mathews anticipates that there will be a resurgence of the ‘Power’ genre, Trevlyn and Junior K predicted that ‘Groovy’ will continue to reign. Junior K also suggested that given the short season songs will be released earlier and unfortunately many would not get the op-

portunity to grow on people since the season is too short. So what about Calypso? Lutalo Masimba, better known as Brother Resistance, cautioned that it is never easy to predict trends within the field of Carnival Arts. He suggested that, “There will be a lot of political commentary, but social commentary, philosophy and nation building songs will be favored by calypso lovers. There will also be a good harvest of nice so called ‘old school’ party songs.” Usually commentary style calypso and humor aren’t given enough love on our local radio stations, but Resistance predicted that there might be a turnaround in this unfortunate trend in 2015. Now wouldn’t that be nice? Let’s not forget the actual Mas! Jean Richardson who has been a designer for the hugely popular band Island People for the past 4 years and spearheads a Monday wear line called Wild Paradise and a section for the Tuesday parade called Prism enthusiastically stated that “Carnival is gonna be epic!”. We all know that bikinis are not going to go away, but Richardson also predicted the use of lots of gems and feathers, printed spandex, body chains, metallic temporary tattoos and tiaras. Yes, that’s right tiaras! Sounds like fun! So there you have it! Only time will tell how many of these and other predictions will manifest. For sure, the season will be epic. The only question is the degree of ‘epicness’ which will be experienced.

hile some are counting down the days for Christmas others are excitedly awaiting for the explosion of music, colour and creativity also known as Carnival Monday and Tuesday. For women, Carnival is the perfect opportunity to explore different made up looks. Though the event itself lasts for only two days, the creativity and style varies. Monday is known to be the more relaxed of the two. Tuesday however, masqueraders tend to go the extra mile and experiment a little more with their appearances. Last year we noticed lots of feather eyelashes and coloured gems adorning the face and body but just like the ever-changing weather so too are the beauty trends. So what can you expect for 2015? Here’s what the experts had to say: Diane John, professional international Makeup Artist said “My beauty predictions for Carnival

2k15 would be more ultra glamours, super sexy Las Vegas styled makeup with the use of Swarovski crystals adorning the face to reflect the maximum amount of light from the sun. Also with Carnival Monday becoming much more popular I expect also to see uber glam makeup with fewer crystals.”

POSITIVE, RIZON, AND SHERWIN GARDENER TOUR UK

n a time fraught with negativity it is good to see that there is still a demand for positive forms of entertainment. Non-secular artistes Positive, Sherwin Gardener and Rizon have been making major moves locally in recent times and now the trio have secured tour dates in the United Kingdom. They will comprise part of the cast in the ‘God Time Now’ tour which will target three cities in the UK – London, Birmingham and Leeds. The tour was put together by Flow Masters Records in collaboration with artistehub. net and it includes both concerts and outreach ministry. The three artistes to be featured recently came away with awards from the Marlin Music Gospel Awards at the International Diplomatic Center in Nasau, Bahamas. Also joining

them in this powerful time of ministry will be worship leader Roger Samuels from the UK, UK hip-hop & reggae artist Jahaziel, Manchester Pop, R&B and worship artiste N-Cola, Jamaican born Gospel Reggae artist from Leeds RichE King and other local artistes. The artistes expressed excitement at the opportunity to

Rizon

spread their ministry worldwide. In a release sent to ET&T, the reason for the God Time Now tour was summed up as thus: It’s easy to be busy all the time with an endless to-do list instead of stopping to spend time alone with God. Whatever you’re doing or not doing, the truth is at this moment, each one of us is as close to God as we choose to be. God doesn’t call us

to be comfortable or complacent. He calls us to trust Him so completely that we are unafraid to do His will and fulfill our mandate and evangelize using our gifts and talents at every opportunity that presents itself. As we see how desperate people are getting and how our nations are being destroyed with lies, pornography and hatred it’s evident that the time has come for us to get back to our first love. It’s time to get back to God and spread the gospel. Rizon has expressed his excitement about the tour online with constant social media updates and he posted a photo of the stars as they touched down at Heathrow airport. It was captioned “I thank God for a safe & comfortable journey. After 12 hours of flying, we are here... #London #UKTour #ItsAboutToGoDown #HigherLevel.”

t. Anns resident Brandon Best is riding high on the success of his single ‘This Kinda Love.’ In fact, its success was partly behind his recent concert with the same name. In his 6 years in the industry Best has shared the stage with local stars such as Positive, Sean Daniel, Gitta Dan and International artistes William Mc Dowell and Jonathan Mc Reynolds. He regularly performs with his band Beverly – which is named after his deceased mother. He describes his sound as “unique,” further calling it “a mixture of R&B and Soul with a Caribbean Flavour.” On the heels of his recent This Kinda Love concert Best expressed pleasure with the outcome of the event, but also intimated that it could have been even better than it was. “I am very pleased with the way the event turned out. However, in all things there is room for improvement and I have taken note of areas where more attention could have been given,” 4

thinks the new project will become his new career highlight since he says he is currently riding his career high. He highlighted one recent standout moment which was when he completed a Caribbean Tour with some fellow artistes. “Though we only traveled to four Islands, the reach went beyond that. Thus, at present my music plays in 12 countries worldwide including England and America” he said. With his past and current work considered, Best was asked what he would ultimately like his legacy to be. He answered this way: “I would love my legacy to be the principles I stood for and most definitely my music.” His answer was indicative of the feeling that he put a righteous life even before his craft and that is what propels his musical success. He cemented that in an obligatory message to upcoming artists. “Continue going for your dreams day by day putting God first in everything.”

LOCAL TRAINERS DISH DIET TIPS NEWS FOR FESTIVAL PHYSIQUES

e’re less than 6 months away from CK2015. Band launch season is over, costumes have been bought and some are already in gear with their Carnival diet and fitness plan. For the rest of us, we wait for after the Christmas season, unable to resist all that ham, grog and fruitcake. We all want to look ‘’bess’’ on the road come Monday and Tuesday. But how? Every body type is different and has specific needs. Plus, it seems like everywhere we turn is a new breakthrough diet or a fool proof exercise routine guaranteed to help us get in shape. So what do the fitness gurus among us have to say? Mikhail Ragoonanan is a certified personal trainer, gym owner, model and amateur boxer, who received a bronze medal in the 2014 National Championships. Kameel Ali is a spin instructor and model, who placed 4th in the Male Physique Category of the National Junior Bodybuilding Championships 2013. Both of them agree that getting that Carnival bod, starts with a proper diet. Kameel

states that you should observe a high protein, clean carb diet with good fats. Get your protein from eggs, fish, turkey and chicken, carbs from oats, provisions and brown rice, fats from seeds and almonds. No simple sugars! Mikhail reinforces this, saying that “I don't recommend any unnatural supplements or diet gimmicks to my clients since I believe in eating real, natural as possible, whole foods. Educate yourself in the proper diet you need to get to where you want and stick to it.” But diet alone is not enough to get the amazing physique that these guys have. Mikhail trains twice a day, 5 to 6 days a week, doing a combo of a boxing work-

out and a conditioning routine to develop strength, cardiovascular work, muscular endurance or all at the same time in a crossfitstyle workout. Kameel’s routine consists of 4 days of weights and one rest day, on which he does a spin class for cardio. Mikhail says that when getting in shape for Carnival, it all depends on the person and their definition of a great body for Carnival. One person might want to add muscle, another might just want to get as lean as possible, yet another might want both. “Once you find out what you want, the best advice is to dedicate yourself and attack your goal with everything you have. COTT DISTRIBUTES OVER $5M IN ROYALTIES T

he Copyright Music Organisation of Trinidad and Tobago (COTT) has administered and distributed $5.3 million in royalties to songwriters and international affiliates in its second quarterly distribution. The revenue came from collections for the year 2013 from income streams such as broadcasting, usage of music at business places and at events, as well as music used during the Carnival 2014 season. COTT CEO, Josh Rudder expressed gratitude to its membership for their patience and loyalty to COTT during the implementation of a new Distribution technological system out of 6

Switzerland called CoSIS; which is also used by COSCAP (Barbados) ECCO (Eastern Caribbean), JACAP (Jamaica) and several European collective management organizations. Rudder stated, “Our members will experience significant improvements regarding the efficient and timely distribution of royalties moving forward.” Distributions to COTT members totaled $3.8 million and Distributions to COTT’s overseas affiliates totalled $1.5 million. The majority of COTT’s international remittances will be received by the 2 largest US performing rights organizations: ASCAP and BMI, the UK based

PRS for Music. “These royalty figures are still a moderate indicator of the potential financial growth of our local music industry and are still not close to what it should be due to the significant levels of piracy, non-compliance and overall disrespect for intellectual property rights which still exists within Trinidad and Tobago. It is our hope that stronger legislative measures are put in place to ensure the rights of our songwriters are protected and valued”, said Rudder. achieving anything else in life. Consistency is the key!” Kameel added that a body for carnival comes with great sacrifice but as long as you want it bad enough then you can achieve it. “You must do weights to keep the muscles pumped and toned. Do enough cardio, but not too much cardio. An exercise routine should not be rigid in the sense that it’s all about mixing it up so it doesn’t get boring.” When asked about their personal credo, Mikhail had this to say. “My philosophy for fitness is to have fun with whatever avenues you choose to get in shape. Always keep progressing in any aspect of fitness. It can be as simple as improving your diet or learning a new skill for a workout. Everyone has their own goals; therefore fitness is not a one size fits all. Find out what you want and work towards it. Other people might be training differently but it’s because they have different goals to you.” Similarly, Kameel added that “Fitness is a lifestyle and so should not be seasonal. Also it is important to set practical goals and give yourself enough time in which to achieve them.” So good luck fellow gymers…see you on the road! COTT CEO Josh Rudder

REGIONAL NEWS SEAN PAUL NO LONGER WITH ATLANTIC RECORDS Grammy-winning Dancehall superstar, Sean Paul and prominent American label, Atlantic Records have severed ties after more than a decade together. According to reports, Atlantic recently dropped the multi-platinum selling deejay/ singer, with the label’s chairman and CEO, Craig Kallman confirming to the Jamaica Observer in an email over the weekend that the entertainer is ‘no longer’ with them. Kallman did not elaborate on why the split took place. Sean Paul joined Atlantic in 2002 as part of a joint deal with independent Reggae/Dancehall label, VP Records and enjoyed a highly successful run with the Los Angeles based record label. He subsequently released his first album under the label, Dutty Rock in November of that year, which went on to sell over six million copies worldwide and featured two Billboard Hot 100 chart toppers: Get Busy and Baby Boy (alongside Beyonce).

The young dancehall act got bottled before being booed off stage at a concert in Suriname last weekend. In an Urban Islandz report, an eyewitness recounted that the deejay was in the middle of his set when some patrons began to boo him. “He yelled out some expletives at the crowd after the booing started, but that only made things worse because then came the bottles,” the concert goer said. Alkaline had to leave the stage but later returned to more boos. His set was eventually cut short.

SEXY STACY SHARES HER FITNESS REGIME T

wenty-seven year old Holetown, Barbados native Stacy Gilkes is hot to say the very least. She has a body to die for and with good reason since she is a fitness trainer (She qualified in the UK). She is also a model and the likes of popular photographer Keron Riley have photographed her. You may have seen her in a recent ad for Cheezee’s. When asked who her favourite designers were, her answer was a hilarious ode to her craft. “Do Nike and Under Armor count? I do love my Michael Kors and Lulifama for bikinis though!” Stacy is genuinely obsessed with fitness and she keeps in shape with a variety of methods. Her hobbies include playing squash, surfing in her native country and provocative pole dance. Gilkes intimates that her ultimate goal is to open her own

fitness studio where she can personally train her clients and teach pole fitness. Just be careful not to get her cross with your bad training habits. As far as her pet peeves she says “Oh gosh, as a trainer my biggest pet peeve would have to be those people that don’t rerack their weights! You know who you are!” In terms of her personal look, she shared some diet and workout tips that just might help you achieve the desired look for Carnival. Diet My diet is basically oatmeal, cereal or chia pudding for breakfast. I usually have a snack around 11, which would be like Greek yogurt with fruit. I train at 1pm and then I have a big lunch which would be a salad and chicken breast or tuna. Depending on my work out I may include some carbs as well, and Photos by Keron Riley

Workout Regime Monday: Legs Tuesday: Chest and Arms Wednesday: Cardio and Abs Thursday: Back and Shoulders Friday: Legs I normally love to use heavy weights when I train, but it’s always fun to mix it up. So a basic back and shoulder work out looks something like this: Back Lat Pulldowns: 4 sets: 65lbs, 65lbs, 70lbs, 85lbs (15,12,12,10 reps) Barbell row: 4 sets: 60lbs, 60lbs, 70lbs 80lbs (15, 12, 12, 10 reps) Single Arm Dumbell Row: 4 sets: 35lbs, 40lbs,

40lbs, 45lbs (15, 12, 12, 10reps) Shoulders Lateral Raises: 4 sets: 10 reps at 15lbs, 10 reps at 10lbs and 10 reps at 5lbs with no rest in between, that's one set. Dumbell Shoulder Press: 4 sets: 15lbs, 15lbs, 20lbs, 25lbs ( 15,15,12,10 reps) Barbell upright row: 4 sets at 30lbs, 10 reps. I love doing heavy weights for back exercises and lighter more endurance based training for my shoulders. I normally do about 5 exercises per muscle group so that is just a little piece of my normal session. iving legend, Mike ‘Big Mike’ Antoine made some time in his hectic schedule to facilitate an ET&T interview. The Legacy band leader spoke a little bit about his C2K15 expectations and how he maintains his awesome physique. ET&T: What was the inspiration behind Reflections? Mike: Reflections came about as a double-play on the word itself – a reflection of the beauty around us and the magical things that light does, which we often never notice. ET&T: What are some of your expectations for Carnival 2015? Mike: 2014 was a great Carnival for Legacy, so based on the feedback received and the plans that we have underway, for C2K15 we are expecting an even better Carnival. ET&T: What inspires you to keep bringing out a Band so different from the last each year? Mike: Once I choose an overall theme, then I start getting ideas on how the Band should look based on that. I develop these ideas once I start doing research on the theme. More and more, current fashion and colour trends also play a part in the design process. ET&T: What do you think are some of the reasons behind the masqueraders’ loyalty to Legacy? Mike: I think it is definitely the whole Legacy package – calibre of our costumes, prices, our security and services on the road and then Legacy has a unique atmosphere in that it’s not about the posing and the who’s who. It’s all about just having a great time. It doesn’t matter who you are – everyone is considered a celebrity and is

treated as such. ET&T: When do preparations for the following year’s Carnival celebration begin? Mike: Right after Carnival!! Whilst we are on stage, ideas for the following year are already flowing. ET&T: Apart from creativity what is what quality do you think mas bands should have to be truly successful in the industry? Mike: Definitely proper management – Carnival now is not just about the costume, it’s about the whole experience. There are many ingredients which go into giving the masquerader that

positive experience and Mas Bands have to ensure that everything comes together at the right time. ET&T: With Carnival being in the early part of February, does this mean no ham and sorrel for Christmas? Mike: Whatever the date for Carnival, we still find the time to celebrate the spirit of Christmas. It is a special time which we share with family and friends with all the Trini traditions, so yes to sorrel, pastelles and parang! ET&T: Please share with us your anti aging secret…we know you have one! Mike: Thanks for the compliment!

With my busy lifestyle, I may not always be able to eat or sleep as I should, but I do always try to be regular with the gym. That’s what makes me feel young. As they say, it’s all in the mind and you are as young as you feel! ET&T: How often do you workout? Mike: I try to work out 5 times a week, at least an hour and a half per session. Depending on my work load I may not always be able to stick to this, but that’s the target. ET&T: Why is fitness important to you? Mike: For me it is a way of life. It makes me feel good mentally and physically.

FASHIONABLE… OR NAH? he Fashion Five O hit the city to find the latest set of mischievous fashion T miscreants and it did not take that long. A quick stop at an event in Mucurapo and we had to immediately pull out the cuffs. Some of the people said we are sometimes too harsh. So you tell us. Are they fashion-foible abiding citizens, or nah? The writing on the vest says it all. So glad we didn’t have to say it. This young party-goer is rocking black on black attire. Maybe she thought the powder would balance out the darkness of her couture selection. Or Nah!

Unfortunately, guys have dragged themselves into this horrible trend as well. Yes folk, there are males over the age of 3 walking around with visible body powder on the neck and chest. What’s worse is the manner in which he is wearing his pants. We guess he thinks it’s cool. Or nah!

Name: Jhené Aiko Efuru Chilombo Age: 26 (March 16, 1988) Profession: Singer/Songwriter Claim to Fame: Born and raised in Los Angeles, R&B singer/songwriter Jhené Aiko first came to prominence during the early years of the 2000s when she was signed to Epic and contributed vocals to several tracks for labelmates B2K. Coming from a musical family, with two of her

sisters (Miyoko and Jamila) being members of the group Gyrl, Aiko had all the musical grounding to launch her later successes through various appearances on music videos and soundtracks. After collaborating with other artists during her early to midteens, she took a brief hiatus to finish her education. In 2011, she released her comeback mixtape, Sailing Soul(s), composed of dreamy, minimal R&B vocals; it

was entirely written by Aiko herself and featured collaborations with Drake, Gucci Mane, and Kanye West. In 2012, she signed with Def Jam through No I.D.'s ARTium imprint and released the single "3:16AM." The following year proved to be pivotal for Aiko -- she featured on Big Sean's Top 40 hit "Beware" and teamed up with Drake for an appearance on his highly anticipated album Nothing Was the Same. Critics praised her performance with

EMBRACE THE MYSTERY A

good Mystery thriller now and again is always good for the heart. Here, we feature two upcoming films with some mystery, thrills, spills and chills to make them worth the price of admission. Horns Daniel Radcliffe, Juno Temple, Heather Graham and Sabrina Carpenter star in this Fantasy/Horror. Here’s a bit of the plot. In the aftermath of his girlfriend's mysterious death, a young man awakens to strange horns sprouting from his temples. It sounds mysterious enough to have a look.

Before I Go to Sleep This film is about a woman who wakes up every day, remembering nothing as a result of a traumatic accident in her past. However, one day, new terrifying truths emerge that force her to question everyone around her. The plot seems a little out there, but with the caliber of actors on board, it just might

work. Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth, Mark Strong and Anne-Marie Duff lead the cast of this Mystery/Thriller.

Drake, which raised her profile globally. Souled Out, her proper debut album, was released the following September. She is the recipient of two BET awards thus far.
