EMPIRE STAR LINKS WITH PATRICE ROBERTS AND KERWIN DU BOIS TO REMIX HIT SONG

nless you are living under a sizeable slab of stone, you would have heard about the hit television series Empire. Those of you without a rock covering their heads would be familiar with major label US recording artiste V. Bozeman who acted on the show. The Mosley Group artiste released the Timbaland-produced track What Is Love to rave reviews and two of our very own soca artistes grabbed the opportunity to appear on the soca infused remix to the jam. Regularly considered to be two of the most vocally passionate artistes in the country, former Groovy Soca Monarch Kerwin Dubois and leading female star Patrice Roberts added some Caribbean flair to the joint as they melodiously opined on what love meant to them. The production on the track was also altered a bit by Trinidad and Tobago’s own Kernal Roberts and Jean Mark “Pastor” Gittens

LEGENDS COMING TOGETHER FOR GOSPEL IN THE CITY I

f you’re looking for an event that is both uplifting and spiritual in nature, you may want to consider attending Gospel in the City. The event is expected to take place on the 29th August 2015 at the Jean Pierre Complex and will feature performances by Papa Sun, Jermaine Edwards, Sherwin Gardner & Positive. Though the performers differ in musical style, each adding their own flair to the event, one thing is constant, their love and dedication for God. As such, this sets the foundation of each of the artiste songs. Since turning to Christianity in 1977 Papa San has continued to produce his roots reggae sound, but with the message of Christ to the beat instead of his previously popular secular music. Similarly, Jermaine Edwards is an award winning gospel artiste

the hosts for the night. Event coordinator Rebekah Fuentes beamed about the cast and hinted it would be a real treat. “These performers were chosen because the intention was to have a nice wide range of gospel legends perform. Also there is closeness amongst the performers and thought it would be a great idea to have that energy at the event.” She also shared some of her expectations based on the cast chosen. “Upon leaving the event persons would have achieved a full blown experience with each of the 4 performers since there are no supporting acts. It will also be a night of fellowship, dance and worship in which the whole family can attend. In addition to this, there will be fun activities and games around the event for the entire family to participate and enjoy.” Persons interested in purchasing the tickets for the event can do so by visiting any one of several locations across the country.

DARIUS’ SMALL BUSINESS SOLUTIONS CAN CHANGE L A C O L THE MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT LANDSCAPE S W E N F

or many small businesses, turning their ideas into reality can prove to be challenging in more ways than one. The ability to connect with their target audiences is often one of the biggest challenges some of these small businesses face, as the cost to advertise can be quite expensive. Based on this, a burning desire and passion to make a creative difference to the corporate image and advertising needs of smaller businesses, DariUS Creative Services was conceived. DariUS Creative Services is a full service creative company that provides advertising & design, photography (Aerial and Land), web development and print solutions to business, entrepreneurs and persons in need of such services. Though it is much more feasible for small business to approach DariUS Creative Services for their advertising needs, the Managing Director, Darius Dolly assures persons that the company still maintains the highest levels of creativity, technique, customer service and best practices, which are usually associated with larger Ad Agencies. Dolly has worked his way up the ranks over the past 11 years in those said agencies, where he gained significant experience within the creative and advertising industry; and it is this wealth of knowledge and expertise he can now share with those in need at a much lower price. However, according to Dolly, pricing is not the only thing which sets DariUS Creative Services apart from other agencies. He said “It is mainly because we are one of the very few creative agencies, which provides aerial photography, web design, print and advertising all under one roof and yet is still able to meet all our deadlines; delivering a quality product that's second to none in every category.” In addition to this, he believes that their strong and unique con2

ceptual approach to advertising and brilliant use of colours is also a signature of their brand. While their unorthodox customer service approach, hinged particularly on the printing arm of the business, meets the needs of the most urgent, unrealistic and last minute print job requests. good design? Dolly stated, “Good design is subjective and there is no one formula fit all. Design is that piece that makes you stop, stare, read, stare a little more and leaves a lasting impression. That's the type of work that we do at DariUS Creative.” When asked what advice would he give to aspiring entre-

preneurs he said, “The worst thing you can do is to wait to start your business. The best thing that any prospective Entrepreneur can do is to start learning what it takes to own their business and begin by taking those steps. One day you will realize that you have what it takes and muster the courage to finally take that first flight.”

ROSIE RIDES HIGH WITH LATEST AUTISM ADVOCACY BOOK

F

ollowing the successful release of her book "Situation Zane - Autism who knew?", Caribbean-American Autism advocate Rosanne Small-Morgan known affectionately as 'Rosie' is making major impact on the masses. She has been in high demand for speaking engagements on the topic of Autism and has even received prestigious accolades from political figures for her work with the cause. 'Situation Zane' explores Rosie's 12 year time-span of experiences and overcoming challenges with her autistic son, Zane and offers readers substantial information and insight into the Morgans' lives in trying to cope with getting Zane the best possible services and care. The success of the book has been a phenomenal and humbling experience for the St. Vincent-born author, newspaper columnist, blogger, comedienne, wife and mother as it has introduced her to hundreds of parents who are going through 4

this very similar and unpredictable journey. According to Rosie, "I am truly so shocked at how many parents are reaching out to me via my Facebook page, and the number of individuals and organizations which are contacting me to collaborate. My family and I have been able to meet other children on the spectrum, network for support and services for these families as well as garner understanding and empathy from people who are not living in the life of autism for the families going through this daily struggle." With its "coffee table" for-

mat and at times humorous approach 'Situation Zane' has intrigued readers globally with its diverse topics, promoted a serious message about Autism and has been a helpful tool to start the conversation with some parents who would have been resistant to speaking about their children and their struggles. The book has also raised Rosie's profile as an already in demand public speaker on Autism. She has recently had speaking engagements in New York and Florida and has some upcoming opportunities in her homeland, the Caribbean. Most notably,

she was a featured speaker at the Footprints Foundations Literary Jazz Brunch at the Ritz Carlton, Florida and was a featured presenter at the NYC Department of Health's forum for Children with Special Needs 2015. Along with Situation Zane's success and numerous requests for speaking appearances, Rosie has also received several prestigious honours for the book and her unparalleled work with Autism. These include a citation from the Mayor of Hempstead Village, a certificate of Award from the Public Advocates Office of the City of New York and a citation from Senator Leroy Comrie's' Office (Queens, New York) for her work. As an author and proud Caribbean woman and mother Rosie aspires to get 'Situation Zane' into Caribbean bookstores as well as primary and secondary school classrooms, where it would help and become a resource for so many other impacted families.

he trinidad+tobago film festival (ttff) recently unveiled its first selections for this year’s edition of the Festival with the announcement that ten classic Caribbean films will form part of the 2015 lineup. These ten films will screen in a special sidebar to the main programme in honour of the ttff’s tenth anniversary. The Festival takes place from September 15–29. “Many people are unaware that there has been a Caribbean film industry for quite some time, or that almost every country in the region has produced feature films,” said Bruce Paddington, ttff Founder and Festival Director. “We are therefore very proud to present ten of the very best classic films from the Caribbean that will help one to appreciate and enjoy the rich diversity of the region.” Comprising films from nine different countries, the sidebar ranges across the English-, Spanish-, French- and Dutch-speaking sections of the region. The lineup includes the Jamaican classic, The Harder They Come, and Bim, from T&T.

Memories of Underdevelopment, the oldest film in the lineup, is from 1968, while the most recent, Strawberry and Chocolate, was released in 1993. Both films hail from Cuba. The full slate of films is as follows: Memories of Underdevelopment (Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, Cuba, 1968) The Harder They Come (Perry Henzell, Jamaica, 1972) Bim (Hugh A. Robertson, Trinidad and Tobago, 1974) One People (Pim de la Parra, Suriname, 1976) Man By the Shore (Raoul Peck, Haiti, 1983)

which, in the first instance, will present information on over 600 independent feature-length films made in and about the Caribbean. The database is cofinanced by the ACP Cultures+ Programme (ACP Group of States), funded by the European Union (European Development Fund) and implemented by the ACP Group of States. The rest of the lineup for the ttff/15 will be unveiled over the upcoming months. For more information about the Festival, visit ttfilmfestival. com. In addition, the ttff seeks to facilitate the growth of Caribbean cinema by offering a wideranging industry programme and networking opportunities. The ttff is presented by Flow and given leading sponsorship by bpTT, and supporting sponsorship by the Embassy of the United States of America.

REGIONAL NEWS QUEEN IFRICA: GAYS LOVE MY MUSIC

GREGORY ISAACS GETS “COOL RULER” SPRING WATER AND PLAQUE AT 65 Iconic reggae crooner Gregory Isaacs continues to live on even in death. On the 65th anniversary of late bard’s birthday, several industry players including Copeland Forbes and Bongo Herman gathered to pay homage to him. The celebrations took place at the corner of Charles Street and Orange Street in Isaac’s hometown and saw the unveiling of a commemorative plaque in the legend’s name. The singers’ widow June Isaacs was present to launch ‘Cool Ruler’ the veteran singer’s spring water which was named after an album by Isaacs.

Queen Ifrica is often controversial about the topics she sings about and has in the past received some bashing for her anti-gay lyrics. But now the reggae songstress is saying that the gay community loves her music despite the touchy lyrical content. “I have worked extensively with people from the gay community since I did Daddy Don’t Touch Me There,” she said. “Some of them, their fathers were the ones responsible for breaking them into that lifestyle.” Ifrica also said that she is proud of herself for being bold for tackling those touchy topics in her music. “I feel proud of myself that I am able to stand in a time where it is taboo and cliché to speak the truth about anything that has to do with self-development and self- awareness,” she added. Queen Ifrica got some backlash from the gay community and some corporate companies during her performance at the 2013 Independence Grand Gala in Kingston. But she is saying that was a moment of spirituality for her. “What happened at the Grand Gala was something that was supposed to happen at that moment of spirituality and spiritual awareness, so that people

"During a taping of the first annual [NBA] Players Awards on Sunday in Las Vegas, The Game’s Pooch Hall spoke to Black Sports Online and confirmed the return of BET’s late night show," a statement from BET says. "Contrary to Hall’s quote on the Red Carpet and numerous reports from Hip Hop outlets, this is untrue. BET.com's email to Black Sports Online was not returned." BET Uncut was known for airing such sexually explicit videos after 3 AM as Nelly's "Tip Drill" and 50 Cent's "Disco Inferno." The show drew protests from many Historically Black Colleges & Universities, including Spelman College, which led to the program's cancelation in 2006. Sadly, she is most well-known for her role as dance backup to Machel Montano, but she has used every opportunity as a stepping stone, launching her own school and more. ET&T caught up with this beautiful and amazing talent for an interview. However, you can get more of La Shaun and her work by checking her websites, www. LaShaunPrescott.com and www. ElleNYTT.com. She also, recently started a YouTube channel. www. Youtube.com/LaShaunPrescottOfficial.

ET&T: Having put in work for years, what was your “GT” moment? LSP: I think one of my biggest breakthrough moments would have been when I taught the open house class at the Mark Morris Dance Center in New York. It was my very first class as an official faculty member. I had 2 of my fellow Elle NYTT members there with me – Kate and Zulema, and as people just kept coming into the room, we just looked at each other. There were no words. At the end of the day, their admin staff messaged me to say I had the biggest class for the day with over 90 persons. Who would have thought people would be interested in taking a Soca class! ET&T: Was starting Elle as easy as you made it look? What were some of the challenges? LSP: Oh does it look easy? Ha! There have always been challenges. From my very first class, when there

were just 2 students. It was Zulema again who was there telling me – well La Shaun it might take some time to build you know. Here we are some years later and we have 31 dance classes a week from 3 ½ years go straight up to that lovely 60 year old who was in my class. We’re now operating out of three branches in Trinidad and one in New York. For me, one of the biggest challenges has always been managing personalities. Let me tell you… creative people are not the easiest to work with. This is where my sister and co-Director Halcyon Prescott Alexander comes in. ET&T: Do you think anyone can learn to dance or is it not for everybody? LSP: I think anyone can learn to dance. I’ve seen some people come to Elle NYTT dance classes starting with three (not two) left feet, no rhythm until you’re thinking “but aren’t you hearing the music?” These are some truly special moments when you see their progression and it makes everything all worth it. ET&T: Would you say that dance as an artform pays well? LSP: Well it’s not the best-paying when you stack it up against all the careers out there, but our remuneration in the field of dance is not monetary. There are so many other factors to consider when choosing a career path. Yes money may be one of them, but you cannot put a price on doing what you love. It took a while for me to start referring to what I do as work. I don’t have

16 ET&T • JULY, 2015 • www.amgtt.com

ET&T: Many would consider you to be a master of dance, but are there still routines that you have trouble learning? LSP: Well I am indeed humbled by this question. I don’t think there will ever be a time in life when anyone can say they have learnt everything. I have never done tap dance. This is one style that evaded me. During rehearsals for our last company show, I did a routine with Hamid Abdul Rahman and Adrian Daniel – World Hip Hop Championship Medalists. Almost every rehearsal I would ask myself “but who really send me boy?’ Added to which, my memory is not the best so in learning routines sometimes, I might forget the sequence but with enough practice, when it sticks, I don’t forget. ET&T: What are some of the projects you are working on? LSP: I’m heading back to New York in August and I’ll be teaching our Soca Classes at the Mark Morris Dance Center. I’m also planning a Caribbean Contemporary Dance Workshop while there – a genre that I recently decided I want to start pushing internationally, fusing the mainstream modern and contemporary styles that people are familiar with worldwide, with our Caribbean nuances. We’re also in discussions for the second edition of the Soca Master Classes in Guadeloupe. Finding new ways to expand Elle NYTT is an ongoing project through additional classes and new ideas. The dancers are preparing to go to this year’s World Hip Hop Championships in August under a collaborative Mega Crew. The other things that I have in the pipeline internationally I

can’t reveal as yet.

ET&T: Share a little bit about how you ended up with JC Management. LSP: I’ve been putting a lot of thought into making a distinction between the brand that is Elle NYTT and the brand La Shaun Prescott. Elle takes a lot of work and a lot of time, so I felt that having someone to focus specifically on La Shaun Prescott might be a novel approach. I needed someone who would be able to understand my values, my work ethic, and who would not be focusing on any of their clients so much that I would feel disadvantaged. I had been following their (JC Management’s) work with Patrice Roberts and I had personal interaction with them for an event that I was assisting with coordination in Tobago. In our initial discussions, Jelan admitted that he had never worked with a dancer/ choreographer and it would be new territory for him, but with his skill set, we felt we would be willing to give it a try. ET&T: Describe your dream gig. LSP: My dream gig would be to choreograph a Soca routine for So You Think You Can Dance. They have done Dancehall before so I don’t see it as a far stretch. I have also dreamt about taking a full musical production on an international tour completely produced by Elle NYTT. I would love to be able to give my dancers and choreographers that experience. ET&T: What is the biggest misconception about LaShaun Prescott? LSP: People tell me that they felt like they couldn’t approach me. I’ve also been told I appear to be unemotional. Furthest from the truth! ET&T: Who is LaShaun Prescott away from Dance? LSP: Umm… what? Away from dance? Excuse? What you talking about Willis? Seriously, my mind is not allowing me to come up with an answer…

MAKE IT YOUR DUTY TO MOISTURIZE

BEAUTY

I

n the quest to stay young forever, men and women try all sorts of quirky methods. From heavily priced facials with weird names and equally weird ingredients to morning rituals that involve skin shaving, the market has also become bombarded with moisturizers that promise a youthful glow. Apart from the cheapest secret known to radiant skin, which is water, careful moisturizing can help keep skin looking young and soft to the touch. Facial cleansing is probably the most important of them all as the first thing that people are drawn to is your face. The skin type helps decide the type of moisturizer that is needed from oil-free to hydrating to non-comedogenic. See below for reasons why one should moisturize.

1

Persons with an oily skin type have questioned the use of moisturizers on their face. But even if your skin-type is oily, you should moisturize as this helps retain moisture that would have been washed away when cleansing or toning. Lack of moisture on the face can cause the face to produce its own oil, adding to an already existing situation.

2

Your skin’s constant exposure to the sunlight and other factors such as dust and climate changes can cause it to look dull, therefore losing its radiance. Moisturizer helps keep the skin free of blemishes and can cause the luster and brightness of the skin to return.

3

Make-up can dry out the skin and if it is not removed by cleansing at the end of the day, it can clog pores, leaving room for the appearance of blackheads and pimples. Moisturizing can replenish the skin’s surface and fight off the early signs of aging, that dead skin cells are known for causing.

4

Moisturizer with SPF (Sun protection factor) is the ideal moisturizer especially for those who live in tropical countries that have sun year-round. That does

not mean that persons who experience hot climates for certain periods of the year should not wear sunscreen also. Moisturizers with SPF do just that: protect the skin from the sun. Sun has been known to dry skin and create rough patches which can flake, peel or leave a white, kind of ‘chalky’ appearance on skin.

Moisturizer can also rejuvenate the skin at night. Although one school of thought suggests that moisturizing at nights is bad, while sleeping your skin tends to get dehydrated. As a precautionary method, moisturize your face. This provides the hydration your face needs to pump up your skin cells. www.amgtt.com • JULY, 2015 • ET&T 17

MK CURRY DUCK, CAR SHOW AND SOUND OFF C

urry Duck cook offs have become a big part of Trini culture while car/audio shows are generally well received by males across the country as well. Put them together and you have a massive event that the entire family can enjoy. Nobody does car shows better than MK Promotions and they were the ones responsible for this event at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva. The participants in the cook-off went all out with presentation and technique and it is obvious that Trinbago has some top talent when it comes to vehicular detailing and audio installation as well. Dean Akin and crew revamped the way Tribe does mas by including a lot more fashion and traditional mas flair to the costumes revealed at the launch. There was a beautiful mix of bikini mas and cloth-centric carnival road couture. The drinks inclusive events which saw a large turnout to witness the festivities, took place at the Queens Park Savannah and also featured costumes from the 10 sections of Bliss. THE LITTLE THINGS

he good, hardworking members of the Fashion Police are not T out to embarrass or hurt anyone. Even the worst fashion offender needs the benefit of the doubt. Sometimes, the offences themselves are not that bad, but we think these are the offences that need to be highlighted. The two offenders highlighted here, weren’t incredibly bad. However, they made some little mistakes.

It you aren’t playing tennis or netball there really isn’t any reason to rock high cut sneakers with your short skirt. The outfit shows the promise of class, but then ends at the feet in an overly casual manner.

We are not criticizing the fact she is also wearing J’s. Her choice of a romper makes it a little more acceptable. However, she should have chosen the appropriate bra to be worn with that top. Those visible straps are a fashion crime.

CELEB PROFILE

AMY SCHUMER

Name: Amy Beth Schumer Age: 34 (June 1, 1981) Profession: Comedienne/ Actress Claim to Fame: Like Sarah Silverman before her, comedian Amy Schumer has turned shock value into an art form. Combining cute, unassuming looks with the darkest of black comedy, Schumer gets audiences to let down their guards before hitting them with outrageous one-liners and material that goes well beyond the

limits of accepted "good taste." She gets away with it, too, because she knows how to write a really good joke. The Long Island native first began performing standup comedy in New York in 2004. Schumer’s growth continued with her placing fourth on Season Five of the NBC reality competition Last Comic Standing. In 2011, she released her first stand-up album, Cutting,

on Comedy Central Records. Her first hour-long stand-up special, Mostly Sex Stuff, premiered on Comedy Central in 2012. This spawned Schumer's Comedy Central series, Inside Amy Schumer, which premiered in spring of 2013. She is now riding a new wave of success as the Judd Apatow directed Trainwreck (a movie she wrote and starred in) is currently the number one comedy movie worldwide.

The Revenant This movie lacks the blockbuster potential of Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, but it could very well be a favourite during awards season. Tom Hardy and Leonardo DiCaprio lead this film inspired by a legendary true story. The story is set in the 1820s when frontiersman, Hugh Glass, set out on a path of vengeance against those who left him for dead after a bear mauling.
