EMPIRE STAR LINKS WITH PATRICE ROBERTS AND KERWIN DU BOIS TO REMIX HIT SONG

Those of you without a rock covering their heads would be familiar with major label US recording artiste V. Bozeman who acted on the show. The Mosley Group artiste released the Timbaland-produced track What Is Love to rave reviews and two of our very own soca artistes grabbed the opportunity to appear on the soca infused remix to the jam. Regularly considered to be two of the most vocally passionate artistes in the country, former Groovy Soca Monarch Kerwin Dubois and leading female star Patrice Roberts added some Caribbean flair to the joint as they melodiously opined on what love meant to them. The production on the track was also altered a bit by Trinidad and Tobago’s own Kernal Roberts and Jean Mark “Pastor” Gittens

For those of you who are unaware of what this event offers, according to their Facebook page it is a huge annual beach party at Pigeon Point Beach Resort as well as other popular locations on the isle of Tobago. Though it is referred to as great fete weekend, the partying officially starts on Wednesday with Welcome Wednesday, followed by Reggae Thursday

Sunday’s event is referred to as ‘Sunday Callaloo’, and will include a street parade which is free to anyone wishing to participate. Asson also revealed that since persons have been requesting the return of water at one of the main nights, Wet fete was added back to the list of scheduled events with a surprise water feature that has never been seen in Tobago. he trinidad+tobago film festival (ttff) recently unveiled its first selections for this year’s edition of the Festival with the announcement that ten classic Caribbean films will form part of the 2015 lineup. These ten films will screen in a special sidebar to the main programme in honour of the ttff’s tenth anniversary. The Festival takes place from September 15–29. “Many people are unaware that there has been a Caribbean film industry for quite some time, or that almost every country in the region has produced feature films,” said Bruce Paddington, ttff Founder and Festival Director. “We are therefore very proud to present ten of the very best classic films from the Caribbean that will help one to appreciate and enjoy the rich diversity of the region.” Comprising films from nine different countries, the sidebar ranges across the English-, Spanish-, French- and Dutch-speaking sections of the region. The lineup includes the Jamaican classic, The Harder They Come, and Bim, from T&T.
Memories of Underdevelopment, the oldest film in the lineup, is from 1968, while the most recent, Strawberry and Chocolate, was released in 1993. Both films hail from Cuba. PARTICIPATING PROJECTS ANNOUNCED FOR FIRST CARIBBEAN FILM MART
F
ifteen feature-film projects from ten countries will participate in the inaugural Caribbean Film Mart (CFM), which takes place at the 2015 trinidad+tobago film festival (ttff) in September. The CFM will give the 15 selected filmmakers with Caribbean films in development and pre-production the opportunity to meet with 30 international film producers, sales agents and film funds, with the aim of creating professional relationships and partnerships that will enable the production and distribution of the participating projects. Over 100 projects were submitted to the CFM, from which the participating 15 were chosen. Eleven are fiction projects, while 6

four are documentaries. “We are pleased that a number of the projects are from ttff alumni, some of whom have gone through our RBC Focus: Filmmakers’ Immersion, and

others the EAVE Producers’ training initiative which took place at ttff/14,” said Emilie Upczak, ttff Creative Director. The selected projects were adjudicated by the ttff, the
Global Foundation of Democracy and Development from the Dominican Republic, the Association for the Development of Art Cinema and Practice from Guadeloupe, the Foundation of New Latin American Cinema in Cuba, and the Regional and International Festival of Cinema of Guadeloupe. The project is co-financed by the ACP Cultures+ Programme (ACP Group of States), funded by the European Union (European Development Fund), and implemented by the ACP Group of States. The CFM will be held from 24-27 September at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Port of Spain, Trinidad. The ttff/15 takes place from 15-29 September.

On the 65th anniversary of late bard’s birthday, several industry players including Copeland Forbes and Bongo Herman gathered to pay homage to him. The celebrations took place at the corner of Charles Street and Orange Street in Isaac’s hometown and saw the unveiling of a commemorative plaque in the legend’s name. The singers’ widow June Isaacs was present to launch ‘Cool Ruler’ the veteran singer’s spring water which was named after an album by Isaacs.
Queen Ifrica is often controversial about the topics she sings about and has in the past received some bashing for her anti-gay lyrics. But now the reggae songstress is saying that the gay community loves her music despite the touchy lyrical content. “I have worked extensively with people from the gay community since I did Daddy Don’t Touch Me There,” she said. “Some of them, their fathers were the ones responsible for breaking them into that lifestyle.” Ifrica also said that she is proud of herself for being bold for tackling those touchy topics in her music. “I feel proud of myself that I am able to stand in a time where it is taboo and cliché to speak the truth about anything that has to do with self-development and self- awareness,” she added. Queen Ifrica got some backlash from the gay community and some corporate companies during her performance at the 2013 Independence Grand Gala in Kingston. But she is saying that was a moment of spirituality for her. “What happened at the Grand Gala was something that was supposed to happen at that moment of spirituality and spiritual awareness, so that people

Sadly, she is most well-known for her role as dance backup to Machel Montano, but she has used every opportunity as a stepping stone, launching her own school and more. ET&T: Having put in work for years, what was your “GT” moment? LSP: I think one of my biggest breakthrough moments would have been when I taught the open house class at the Mark Morris Dance Center in New York. It was my very first class as an official faculty member. I had 2 of my fellow Elle NYTT members there with me – Kate and Zulema, and as people just kept coming into the room, we just looked at each other. There were no words. At the end of the day, their admin staff messaged me to say I had the biggest class for the day with over 90 persons. Who would have thought people would be interested in taking a Soca class! ET&T: Was starting Elle as easy as you made it look? What were some of the challenges? LSP: Oh does it look easy? Ha! There have always been challenges. From my very first class, when there

I might head to the studio from around 3, against the traffic, and depending on the time of year, we could be in the studio till maybe midnight, but these are now my “work hours.” The pay really comes when you see the look on the parents’ faces watching their child perform on stage.
were just 2 students. It was Zulema again who was there telling me – well La Shaun it might take some time to build you know. Here we are some years later and we have 31 dance classes a week from 3 ½ years go straight up to that lovely 60 year old who was in my class. We’re now operating out of three branches in Trinidad and one in New York. For me, one of the biggest challenges has always been managing personalities. Let me tell you… creative people are not the easiest to work with. This is where my sister and co-Director Halcyon Prescott Alexander comes in. ET&T: Do you think anyone can learn to dance or is it not for everybody? LSP: I think anyone can learn to dance. I’ve seen some people come to Elle NYTT dance classes starting with three (not two) left feet, no rhythm until you’re thinking “but aren’t you hearing the music?” These are some truly special moments when you see their progression and it makes everything all worth it. ET&T: Would you say that dance as an artform pays well? LSP: Well it’s not the best-paying when you stack it up against all the careers out there, but our remuneration in the field of dance is not monetary. There are so many other factors to consider when choosing a career path. Yes money may be one of them, but you cannot put a price on doing what you love. It took a while for me to start referring to what I do as work. I don’t have

ET&T: Many would consider you to be a master of dance, but are there still routines that you have trouble learning? LSP: Well I am indeed humbled by this question. I don’t think there will ever be a time in life when anyone can say they have learnt everything. I have never done tap dance. This is one style that evaded me. During rehearsals for our last company show, I did a routine with Hamid Abdul Rahman and Adrian Daniel – World Hip Hop Championship Medalists. Almost every rehearsal I would ask myself “but who really send me boy?’ Added to which, my memory is not the best so in learning routines sometimes, I might forget the sequence but with enough practice, when it sticks, I don’t forget. ET&T: What are some of the projects you are working on? LSP: I’m heading back to New York in August and I’ll be teaching our Soca Classes at the Mark Morris Dance Center. I’m also planning a Caribbean Contemporary Dance Workshop while there – a genre that I recently decided I want to start pushing internationally, fusing the mainstream modern and contemporary styles that people are familiar with worldwide, with our Caribbean nuances. We’re also in discussions for the second edition of the Soca Master Classes in Guadeloupe. Finding new ways to expand Elle NYTT is an ongoing project through additional classes and new ideas. The dancers are preparing to go to this year’s World Hip Hop Championships in August under a collaborative Mega Crew. The other things that I have in the pipeline internationally I
can’t reveal as yet.
ET&T: Share a little bit about how you ended up with JC Management. LSP: I’ve been putting a lot of thought into making a distinction between the brand that is Elle NYTT and the brand La Shaun Prescott. Elle takes a lot of work and a lot of time, so I felt that having someone to focus specifically on La Shaun Prescott might be a novel approach. I needed someone who would be able to understand my values, my work ethic, and who would not be focusing on any of their clients so much that I would feel disadvantaged. I had been following their (JC Management’s) work with Patrice Roberts and I had personal interaction with them for an event that I was assisting with coordination in Tobago. In our initial discussions, Jelan admitted that he had never worked with a dancer/ choreographer and it would be new territory for him, but with his skill set, we felt we would be willing to give it a try. ET&T: Describe your dream gig. LSP: My dream gig would be to choreograph a Soca routine for So You Think You Can Dance. They have done Dancehall before so I don’t see it as a far stretch. I have also dreamt about taking a full musical production on an international tour completely produced by Elle NYTT. I would love to be able to give my dancers and choreographers that experience. ET&T: What is the biggest misconception about LaShaun Prescott? LSP: People tell me that they felt like they couldn’t approach me. I’ve also been told I appear to be unemotional. Furthest from the truth! ET&T: Who is LaShaun Prescott away from Dance? LSP: Umm… what? Away from dance? Excuse? What you talking about Willis? Seriously, my mind is not allowing me to come up with an answer…

TRIBE PRESENTS: THE FORBIDDEN A
rguably the largest Carnival band operating out of Trinidad and Tobago, its not secret that Tribe would have one of the most highly anticipated band launches of the season. Dean Akin and crew revamped the way Tribe does mas by including a lot more fashion and traditional mas flair to the costumes revealed at the launch. There was a beautiful mix of bikini mas and cloth-centric carnival road couture. The drinks inclusive events which saw a large turnout to witness the festivities, took place at the Queens Park Savannah and also featured costumes from the 10 sections of Bliss. Here’s a sneak peek at the evolution of Tribe’s mas.

Sometimes, the offences themselves are not that bad, but we think these are the offences that need to be highlighted. The two offenders highlighted here, weren’t incredibly bad. However, they made some little mistakes.
It you aren’t playing tennis or netball there really isn’t any reason to rock high cut sneakers with your short skirt. The outfit shows the promise of class, but then ends at the feet in an overly casual manner.
We are not criticizing the fact she is also wearing J’s. Her choice of a romper makes it a little more acceptable. However, she should have chosen the appropriate bra to be worn with that top. Those visible straps are a fashion crime.
