The sun is shining here in Brighton at last, and with it, local residents and visitors alike are coming out of the woodwork once again. And as I write this, there’s a lift in the sporting air, since England have just won their third (and all important) World Cup game, Wimbledon are aghast at the recordbreaking ten hour tennis match (so far) between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut, and beautiful hats and beings have been adorning the racecourses for the numerous Ladies Days that have been taking place across the land. It seems there really is no better place to be this summer than right here in

‘Blighty.’ Having said that, one land, often unthought-of as a holiday destination (and looks stunning) is Peru. Local businessman, and regular Absolute Brighton business columnist, Roger Clifton-Moore recently took a mammoth trek through Peru with two of his children and a friend to celebrate his 60th birthday in style; and style it was. He proved that you don’t have to be 20-something to trek up

enough, it is now in full progress, looking ready for its completion deadline in 2011. I was fortunate enough to be invited to visit what is Brighton’s most exciting project, taking place in Falmer, for a private tour. Recently revealed as being called The American Express Community Stadium, this new arena is quite astounding from the players and fans point of view, and also for local businesses for functions with its impressive suites and striking architecture. Chief Executive of The Albion, Martin Perry gave me my guided tour of this new Sussex landmark. (Page 54) Well, with bikinis and trunks on the ready, have a lovely and hot July!

Last month I spoke of, among other things, my turn as co-host at a slick hair and fashion charity event, even taking to the catwalk in a bespoke corsetry creation by designer Chrisse Nicholson-Wild, who by the way is expecting her first baby! This month I was all about the industry’s front row as a VIP guest of founder, organiser and director Liz Bishop at the 6th annual Brighton Fashion Week - previously known to our city’s clothes crazy as ‘Brighton Frocks’. After a rousing VIP launch party and designer teaser showcase at The Hilton Brighton Metropole Hotel, hosted by model maven Lindsay Fergusson, four days of alluring glamour held Brighton rapt in its chic and funky grasp. National press and media trampled into town with pads, pens and lenses eager to devour the images of the scores of models parading the visions of established and up-andcoming labels. Biba great Barbara Hulanicki graced the stage, giving great press, presenter Michael Aspel was drawn to his feet from his front row seat for a bow by Juice FM’s Guy Lloyd who hosted the couture show. Mr Aspel, sat only a few yards away from my party, looked fabulous. No stranger to the odd cosmetic tweak, like myself, he looked fresh faced and relaxed! The legendary singer and actress Toyah Wilcox exploded into view at the eye popping, jaw dropping ‘Trashion’ show wrapped in yards of caution-hazard tape designed by BFW’s star turn, creative Jez Eaton. A clutch of Brighton’s drag artistes including Trudi Styles aka Ritchie Hawker and the super-leggy Guy crammed themselves into the crowded after party in the upstairs terraced bar of Norman Cook’s Oki-Nami restaurant, after their amazonian pass down the catwalk in Jez Eaton’s, now trademark ‘Umbrella Dresses’. Trudi sang ‘Que Sera, Sera’ live as she twirled for the wall of press photogs and on her second appearance in something more revealing. An accidental orb, it seems, escaped its not too discreet hiding place, making its own unexpected catwalk debut! Jez was toasted and feted for her inspirational exposition by after party guests, including Trashion show host Stephanie Starlet, as BFW’s Creative Director William Edward Senior began early celebrations of his birthday on the same night. Again, as ever, there have been events that I could not make. I missed the opening of Rock ‘n’ Roller, at the old Pintxo People, a clutch of birthday parties of friends (to whom I offer my sincere apologies), and as football and all things South African jostled for centre stage with summer itself, I missed the H-Bar Cancer Charity World Cup England V America party organised by Pasha Du Valentine, aka The Countess of Brighton and Hackney. I did make the Madame Geisha frolics for the launch of Spindle Magazine. I dipped my face into an after party at the Pelirocco Hotel for what I think was their anniversary on a busy night of four events, the last of which I was expected at was the 15th Anniversary of Pussycat Club at Digital. My entry was barred by a surly, uninformed and indifferent doorman. One can assume only that the lumox was flumoxed by my customised black ribboned ‘salvation cowboy’ hat. Well, one can’t be everywhere, even when one tries! Now the Webb/Armsby-Ward empire continues to grow where others still struggle as they open the revamped Dyke Tavern, Dyke Road with two events; a drinks night and then shortly afterwards, a ‘friend’s only’ menu and service sampling soiree. So summer looks set to keep us warm and busy and here, in Beverly Dials at the Socialite household, smoke rises from this and neighbouring gardens as the simple pleasures of barbeques, Pimms and friends remind us that bald-headed bouncers do not have the last word on our happiness.

Brighton is known for its individuality. Therefore, it only seemed right that the first restaurant/pool bar to call Sussex home should open in the city. In the months since Rock & Roller exploded onto the scene, livening up Western Road with its delicious mix of American-inspired food, great beers, fine wines and spirits, and not forgetting fantastic cocktails, it’s quickly won an army of loyal pool-playing fans who keep returning. The official launch party took place recently, with hundreds of VIPs flocking to christen Brighton’s new premier eatery. Guests included: Aisleyne Horgan Wallace (Big Brother 7), Ewen Macintosh (The Office), So Solid Crew’s Lisa Maffia, TV’s Giles VickersJones, and ex-Eastenders’ star Lucy Speed as well as many important members of Brighton society. The guests played pool on one of five tables, sampled delicious cocktails and tucked into canapés giving them a taste of the menu, including burgers, fishcakes, steak sandwiches, chocolate brownies and pecan pie. Hollywood gossip pages have been fuelled with anticipation on who will take the coveted role of Captain America in the upcoming blockbuster, based on the Marvel Comic superhero. Not since MGM’s powerbrokers went in search of an actor to play Scarlett O’Hara back in 1938, (yep, Bette Davis, Frances Dee, Joan Fontaine, Katherine Hepburn and Lana Turner were all in the running…) has there been more speculation. But wait, a Hollywood mole has informed me that Hollywood newcomer Chris Evans (not be confused with the BBC 2 Radio host) has been tipped to play the role, which at first focused on relative unknown actors. The 28-year-old has previously brought to life another Marvel Comic superhero when he played Johnny Storm, aka the combustible Human Torch, in the two Fantastic Four movies. The First Avenger: Captain America is set for release in July 2011. Good luck Chris!

...and they call it puppy love!

The blonde heartthrob, Kellan Lutz has been making the headlines again. Not for his roles in the ‘Twilight’ saga, nor his ghastly George Evans on TV’s ‘Beverly Hills 90210’, but instead for adopting a stray pup. But what kind of breed one may ask? A Bloodhound? A Beagle? A St. Bernard? No, it is a ‘Paris Hilton’ style Chihuahua! The 25-year-old told reporters, “I had to take him home. He just lay on the street and acted dead whilst all these cars drove around him”. And who said vampires haven’t got a heart! Horror fans will be able to catch Hollywood’s favourite blonde later this

Mad about the boy

Has actress January Jones finally swapped the single life to hook up with Oscar Winner Adrian Brody? Well if the rumours are true, she certainly has. Spotted together in Malibu earlier this month, the couple, according to onlookers looked very much in love. January, who plays the beautiful but terminally bored housewife Betty Draper in hit TV show “Mad Men”, looked cool and casual in a tribal print sundress, trilby and sandals, whilst Brody was ‘manning it up’ leaving on his Ducati motorbike. Does Obituary hear the distant ring of wedding bells?

Down and out...

Poor Jessica Biel was recently locked out her own house with not a thing to wear! She had to dash to her male best friend, actor Chad Allen, and borrow a pair of his khaki pants. Constantly in the top 100 ‘Sexiest Women on Film’, Biel currently has more than 10 films in production. No wonder she hasn’t

Freeze frame The knives have been out in Hollywood! And not just for a quick nip/tuck, but rather lambasting Jackie Collins and Raquel Welch for taking plastic surgery just a little too far. But how far? Wouldn’t most women give their eye-teeth to look like these dames? Sitting side by side at a charity lunch in Beverly Hills this week, the actress and the novelist certainly would have had plenty to chat about. Raquel, who attributes her looks to nothing more than diet and exercise, has admitted struggling with the passing years, describing turning 60 as ‘not a happy time’. Ah bless…

ABSOLUTE INTERVIEW

JUST HAVEN’T MET HIM YET? Almost from nowhere, Michael Bublé has become a modern day Sinatra attracting masses of fans across the globe. Nicola McGeorge meets the charming man who has started our toes tapping to swing once again

T

he first thing you might notice about Michael Bublé is that smile – that devilish choirboy grin belongs to a man at the top of his game, who unwraps his passions in intense musical colours. Smiles and sorrows ring out through Michael’s current album Crazy Love, featuring a baker’s dozen of MB originals as well as a thrilling selection of standards that show equal doses of confidence, vulnerability and artistic ambition. You can pretty much get a sweep of Michael’s life from the songs he’s chosen and written. The hopeful first single is his original Haven’t Met You Yet that is practically a knock on the door for anybody harbouring a longing for love. The other hook-laden Bublé original Hold On, is his heartfelt paean to that rare higher love that survives even after the break-up smoke clears. Michael Bublé’s Crazy Love album was recorded to truly create an authentic sound. Nearly all of the songs were recorded straight off the studio floor with his band, and sometimes huge orchestra, by his side allowing all sounds to bleed into one another. It’s the way Elvis and even Louis Armstrong used to record. He has sold 22 million albums, fills up arenas around the world, has three Grammy awards on his mantle peice and scores of Junos (the Canadian equivalent). Bublé even managed to buy a Canadian Hockey team; a passion almost equal to his joy of making a song his own. “It was like a Chelsea fan being told, ‘listen, Abramovich is running out of cash, you want a piece of Stamford Bridge?’” Says Michael. Then he adds “I don’t do anthems though. The Canadian national anthem is the only song that you can accidentally forget the words to and people hate you for the rest of your life.”

“...It felt as though one day someone had disconnected the parachute and I felt like I could fly” 24

Michael Bublé started singing early while growing up in Burnaby outside of Vancouver on the Pacific Coast of Canada. But for much of his childhood, his destiny was to become a fisherman. There were three generations of salmon fisherman before him including his father a captain who worked the Pacific Northwest. “Working on a fishing boat for six years with my dad every summer gave me the greatest lessons I’ve learned in my life,” recounts Bublé. “As much as I hated it, I loved it. Between 4 or 5am the boat’s engine would start running and my father would come to the crew room where we were sleeping. He’d holler, ‘All right boys time to get up!’ It would be so COLD! We’d be sleepy, and very groggy. I’d be in my boxers and a pair of socks. I’d throw on a pair of stinky diesel-smelling jeans and a shirt and a sweater to head up the ladder to put my gum boots on and get my rain gear!” On a boat Michael learned that a livelihood carries risks and rewards: “You could end the day with enough to buy a new car, or have wasted the fuel and food on a luckless day! It was exciting, too though. It was tradition that the first salmon that came over, everyone would have to grab it and give it a big kiss on the mouth. You would smell that unmistakable stinky-but-beautiful smell of a salmon coming fresh out of the water. It was a very grown up place to be. I am who I am because of my experience on that fishing boat! That was my school for being a human being. It made me. It makes me appreciate what I have now.” Then he adds, “This thing they call ‘work,’ I get to sing!” With a grandfather who played a collection of his favourite vinyl to the young Michael over and over again, it wasn’t long before the two would be singing every song together word for word. There’s hardly a Bublé fan out there who can’t retell the story of his beloved Italian grandfather trading plumbing parts and services to bar and nightclub owners to get his grandson stage time in front of a crowd. Michael recalls fond memories from those days,“Sometimes the audience was just my parents, grandparents, two sisters and three drunk guys in the corner who weren’t even listening. But my family’s love and support strengthened my resolve to

ABSOLUTE INTERVIEW “Working on a fishing boat for six years with my dad every summer gave me the greatest lessons I’ve learned in my life” keep going. When I started out, I learned organically to be aware of the moment or hide from the fact that some people in the room didn’t care. I used self-depreciating humour and sang often; three shows a night for all I was worth. Nearly always by the time the night was over, I had’em! By the time I got to play for people who actually paid to see me, it was easy. It felt as though one day someone had disconnected the parachute and I felt like I could fly.” That’s right, overnight success… not! For 11 years, Michael bounced around the entertainment business singing around Canada, and sometimes acting. Though starting to make a name for himself performing at Vancouver’s famed Babalúu Club, he was close to calling it quits: “I just felt it was going nowhere.” Then appeared lady luck at a wedding... Michael’s biggest break appeared back in 2000, when the daughter of the then Canadian Prime Minister, Brian Mulroney, was getting married and a mutual acquaintance asked him to perform at the event. The ‘blade’ sang ‘Mack the Knife.’ Fortunately, one of the guests was the Prime Minister’s good friend, award-winning record producer David Foster, who’d helped fashion hits for Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson and a Grammy-load of others. As they say, the rest is hysteria! (Besides, Mulroney reportedly put Foster in a headlock until he agreed to sign Michael Bublé). Six years on, and three albums later, he has managed to sell out arenas all over the world culminating in a headline gig captured in documentary detail on the hit DVDs ‘Michael Bublé Meets Madison Square Garden’, and his previous ‘Caught In the Act’. Icing on the career success also came as his haunting ‘Home’ turned into a number one hit not only for him but became a number one country hit for Blake Shelton. Meanwhile, another of his hits, ‘Everything’ has travelled in full circle from his being discovered at a wedding, to becoming one of the most popular first dance tunes in the bridal pantheon. For all of his diversity of musical styles, his love is still the ocean, where Michael gamely fishes. Storms and waves and nets and mermaids, and sometimes man overboard; he has sung about it all because he’s oared the craft of love gone right… and wrong. “I hope people have heard the difference on my ‘Crazy Love’ album,” says Michael. “Maybe they won’t know why, but it is distinct from everything else they are hearing on the radio; like the difference between a nice picture of flowers and then real flowers with all the colour and perfumes. People have an inborn sense of what is authentic.”

ABSOLUTE INTERIORS

SPACE AND LIGHT A dramatic improvement can be made to your home with the addition of a conservatory

A

conservatory is a long term investment in your home, so choosing the right one for you is vital. It adds space and value to your property, and should encroach into your garden area in a way that enhances all parts of your home. Depending on your taste, and the style of your property, is a modern style or a traditional arrangement the best choice? Contemporary conservatories have clean lines and unfussy frames. They can have pitched, flat or lean-to style roofs. They’re usually simple square or rectangular structures. Traditional structures take their inspiration from history - a beautiful Victorian conservatory is more ornate, and incorporates more shapes and detail, ideal for the older property. How will you be using your new conservatory? Will be it a playroom, a dining area, an office, a second living room or an all-year-round, allweather extension to the garden? Its purpose doesn’t have to fit exclusively into one of these categories, but your conservatory’s ultimate dayto-day use will determine how large it needs to be as well as which style, layout and materials will work best. The position Bear in mind the aspect of your new conservatory. Conservatories that face south receive more sun than those facing north and as such, the need for adequate ventilation and blinds is of uppermost importance. To help you regulate the temperature in a south facing conservatory, you might also want to think about using Celsius performance glass in the roof. Size matters Once you’ve decided on the design and size of your new conservatory, get a second opinion from a friend or family member. Make sure your choice complements your home and has enough internal floor space to meet your requirements. In short, treat it as a fluid extension to your home rather than just an add-on.

26

Call on the professionals Always get your conservatory professionally designed and installed. Also be sure to use vetted installers who offer an insurance backed guarantee. With such a major and prized investment, it’s simply not worth taking the risk. Don’t automatically opt for the ‘cheapest’ company unless its products and services also happen to be better than the competition. Another important factor to consider when appointing your installer should be their ability to meet your timescales. The last thing you want is an installation that will drag on and on, leaving your home looking like a building site for weeks or even months. Check with your local authority. Under new regulations that came into effect from 1st October 2008, adding a conservatory to your house is considered to be a permitted development, not needing an application for planning permission (unless your property is listed, in a conservation area or it has already

been extended), but there are conditions, some of these are listed below. 1. No more than half the area of land around the original house would be covered by additions or other buildings. 2. No extension forward of the principal elevation or side elevation fronting a highway. 3. No extension to be higher than the highest part of the roof. 4. Single-storey rear extension must not extend beyond the rear wall of the original house by more than three metres if an attached house or by four metres if a detached house. 5. Maximum height of a single-storey rear extension of four metres. 6. Maximum depth of a rear extension of more than one storey of three metres from the rear wall of the original house including ground floor. To find full details of the conditions, please visit www.planningportal.gov.uk or contact your local outhority.

uly is a glorious month with summer very much in the air. It’s the start of the holidays, barbeques are in full swing, cricket and tennis are the order of the day and our gardens become an extension of our day-to-day living space. It’s also the season for flower shows. One of the largest is Hampton Court Flower Show (6th 11th July 2010), that attracts thousands of visitors looking for gardening inspiration or just a great day out. If you can’t get to the show then think about visiting the gardens in your own time … particularly as there is now a spectacular wine fountain to experience! It’s a replica of 16th century design – made out of timber, led, bronze and gold leaf - and stands in the palace’s largest courtyard on the site where archaeologists found the remains of a 16th century fountain two years ago. The four-metre high fountain serves up red, white and rosé wine to visitors. Talking of rosé, July is also the month when roses are in full bloom, turning gardens into beautiful arrays of blossoms. Roses put on a fantastic show throughout the summer months with a wonderful flush of fragrance and flowers. There are many types of roses and varieties including shrub roses, the classic hybrid tea, and English roses that offer an exquisite fragrance. Amongst all of the different types of roses, there is a rose for every occasion and one that suits both large and small gardens, contemporary or traditional, while offering varieties for planting into flower beds or traditional borders and for potting into planters for the courtyard or patio garden, giving instant appeal. Relatively easy to maintain, roses are best grown in an open sunny position and benefit from the addition of well-rotted organic material and a good, general purpose fertilizer. Planting container

grown roses is easy by just digging out a hole a little wider than the root ball and placing the plant into the hole. Fill in with the surrounding soil and firm around the plant, finishing off by watering in well. It has been shown that most bush roses can be easily maintained from year to year by the removal of any dead or crossing branches and a general reduction in size and shape to suit the planting situation. A wide variety of roses can be bought from your local garden center or nursery, and can be purchased with National Garden Gift Vouchers. July is also the key month to make sure your garden doesn’t suffer from dehydration. Conserve water and help plants in the summer by moving pots out of the sun into the shade and, when possible, water in the evenings so it has time to soak in overnight. A water butt is also a wise and eco-friendly investment.

THE BRONZE AGE How to wear bronzer and become a golden goddess - at any age! Bronzer remains a favourite look among celebrities who love to have bright, glowing skin all year round and especially on the red carpet. When used properly bronzer has the power to transform any face, by highlighting and defining areas, especially the cheekbones. So it is no wonder that bronzer is one ‘fashion’ that never seems to go out of style! That little extra touch of warmth will instantly make you look healthier and more youthful, but that doesn’t mean everyone should grab the terracotta. Choose a bronzer that is one to two shades darker than your skin, with brown tones that are more natural-looking. Fair-skinned beauties look best in soft taupe and caramel, while medium skinned girls should use yellow gold shades, and darker skin works best with richer copper tones.

Follow these golden rules for a flawless, feature-enhancing glow 1)To create a soft healthy glow, apply your bronzer in light touches just on the prominent areas of the face, cheekbones, forehead, tip of the nose and chin. 2) For a more intense finish and to create amazing definition, sweep the bronzer in a ‘Lazy C’ Start with the brush close to the hairline just above the temple and glide it downwards along the hairline and then sweep it right underneath the cheekbone. This will heighten the glow while adding spectacular contour to your face. 3) Nothing gives freshness and youth to the face faster than a little blush. Sweep a pinky-peach blush along the cheekbone, stopping at the apple. Use a light touch of a slightly deeper or brighter shade to really add dimension to the face. The right touch of blush will enhance the glow that your bronzer gives to the face. Since darker colours recess the face, be mindful not to apply too much, or you will shrink your cheekbones and sink in your cheeks and under eyes. If you have fair or greying hair, be careful not to colour into your hair line! Bronzers should be believable. Choose the right formula.

20s: In your 20s the skin is generally healthy with a natural lustre all of its own so go gently with the shimmer and opt for a matte formula along the nose, forehead and chin and save the shimmer for your cheeks bones, collar bones and shoulders. 30s: In your 30s, the moisture levels in your skin begins to drop, so it’s important to choose a bronzer with a hydrating formula. Pick a bronzer with a luminous finish, and go easy on the application to avoid a dirty, over-coloured effect. 40s: In your 40s bronzer should give you a subtle glow and not be a blatant beauty announcement. Sway toward mineral based formulas for extra coverage while giving your skin a boost of colour. 50s and beyond: As your skin matures it’s important to update your bronzer formula. Use a light hand, and stay away from heavily pigmented bronzers, and instead choose a subtle colour, adding more to the areas of the face that are naturally kissed by the sun. Steer toward a cream-based formula to keep your skin hydrated and use a bronzer with SPF, to protect skin while covering up those tiny lines.

ABSOLUTE HEALTH

TIME TO WAKE UP This month, our health expert Sheryl Waters explores ways in which we can increase our energy levels

D

o you find that throughout the day you are reaching for caffeine and sugar to give yourself a little boost, only to find that an hour later you are tired again? Are you beginning to wonder if there might be another way to increase your energy? Grabbing a sugary snack to improve your mental energy will not work in the long run as it puts you on a roller coaster ride with manic bursts and tired lows. It’s true that eating sugar and caffeine will give you a quick peak. But after the quick spike, your glucose level will then drop dramatically and when this happens your brain will lose its ability to concentrate and your body will shut down and need yet another sweet, chocolate bar or cup of coffee. So again we reach for another treat trying to maintain the balance we all desire. The truth is that the balance we all desire lies in eating things that create just that… balance. In order to get off the roller coaster, we need to give up sugar and caffeine, or at least have them sparingly. Remember that there are some important vitamins for staying alert. Vitamin C and the all essential B vitamins are incredibly important for maintaining adrenal gland balance. The adrenal glands are generally responsible for optimum energy, and when they are imbalanced we feel tired. Sugar and coffee get the adrenals working, and then crashing. These vitamins will keep these and all other glands in the body in balance. Fortunately, there are many great snacks that will allow us to maintain balance and vitality. Raw chocolate is the new snickers… and it really does satisfy you! Raw chocolate is generally sweetened with natural sweeteners such as stevia and agave nectar, and they don’t cause the rush. Unheated chocolate does not have the

38

overwhelming punch of caffeine that cooked chocolate does. It also contains all of its natural mineral content that gets destroyed in heating. People who eat raw chocolate tend to feel energized, without the dip. Raw chocolate is making us all realize that we can in fact have our cake and eat it too, without the dips! Raw chocolate often comes with healing herbs inside, or you can get the raw ingredients and make it yourself, adding your own favorite energy boosting herbs that work for you. Some of the most popular include: Maca- this is a nutritionally dense super-food that contains high amounts of vitality giving minerals, vitamins, enzymes and all of the essential amino acids. Maca root is rich in B-vitamins, which are the energy vitamins. To boot, maca is known as nature’s Viagra and it balances the hormonal system.

“Raw chocolate is making us all realize that we can in fact have our cake and eat it too...” Ginseng is an incredible performance enhancer and pick-me-up tonic. Ginseng is an ancient Chinese herb that is well known for its ability to give energy and make you feel alive and well. Guarana is a great herb from Brazil that is similar to caffeine, but without the negative effect on your adrenal glands. It is a great party herb and mid afternoon wake up booster.

Some other easy keys for staying alert: Start your day by eating a fiber-rich breakfast like oatmeal. This will deliver glucose over a longer period of time without the energy spike so you will have more energy and less fatigue throughout the day. You may also have fewer memory problems, fall asleep faster and suffer less depression. Instead of energy drinks that typically contain 8 teaspoons of sugar or coffee that gets you boosted, switch to green tea. Green tea is great for the adrenal glands and the body, but still gives you a hit of caffeine. Bananas are a great pick-me-up because they are high in potassium. Potassium is a mineral your body needs to convert sugar in your blood into energy. Peppermint not only freshens your breath, it freshens your brain. The smell of peppermint has been shown to lower fatigue, increase alertness, and decrease frustration. Peppermint oil increases alertness by stimulating the trigeminal nerve (this is the same nerve that is activated by smelling salts). Try taking a long whiff of peppermint oil the next time you need a boost. Peppermint tea is also effective. Sometimes a boost is as simple as a drink of water. Dehydration is a significant factor in fatigue. A recent study found that even a 2% dip in one’s hydration level (this would be the point where you would start to feel a bit thirsty) contributes to a decrease in short-term memory and even the ability to add and subtract. And remember, your body needs movement to feel alive and alert. Exercise creates more energy. If time is a problem, even a miniwork out can be effective. Your body and brain will thank you for stepping off the rollercoaster that sugary food and caffeine produce. Try some of these natural ways to improve your energy levels and maintain harmony and balance in your body and mind!

Smaller goals

“My ill health is preventing me from realising my goals…” Joanne, Brighton

I

t is sometimes easy to set ambitious goals in our lives, and there will be times when maybe, through no fault of your own, you are pulled off track. The loss of motivation or interest is a recognised side effect of someone who is failing to live up to their own expectations. Some goals that people set themselves can either be unrealistic, or unwieldy in time. It’s good to have long term dreams and aspirations, hopes and wishes, but if things don’t go to plan a sense of ‘not achieving’ can quickly set in. To avoid this from happening, set yourself shorter term, smaller and more easily achievable goals. It is very important for our everyday sense of well being that we feel in ourselves that we are achieving in some small but positive way. There will be times when each and every one of us will be reminded how precious and delicate life is. When mitigating circumstances arise, such as a family member or close friend contracting a lifethreatening illness, with the prospect of a solitary and uphill battle to survive, for that person every dawning day and every fading sunset takes on a new and enhanced meaning. By setting themselves tiny and achievable goals, they may start to see small but important

changes beginning to take place. In times of adverse circumstances, it is said that our senses are sharply pulled into focus as we are forced to face our own mortality. Remember that when a person learns to juggle and drops a ball it isn’t failure but just the process of learning. Call Georgina or Terrina on 07912 206483. ABSOLUTE DENTAL

MAGIC MOUTHWASH Sandy Bone, dental hygienist at Marina Dentalcare, looks at some of the myths and truths about mouthwash

“I

t is a truth universally acknowledged that every person in possession of a mouth to care for, must be looking for the magic mouthwash.” (Apologies to Jane Austen). The marketing people would have you believe this wonderful product will provide protection from plaque, strengthen enamel and provide you with social confidence, as well as remove stains and generally give you film star looks, all by taking this magic liquid and swishing it around your mouth. However, like education, if something is that easy it does not usually give you what you would like. I would not go so far as to say it is a confidence trick, because in some circumstances a mouthwash can be both useful and beneficial but only in a very limited way, and certainly not the panacea that advertising might lead you to think. So what can a mouthwash do for you? It can be a useful vehicle for some very useful additives. For instance, enamel that is under constant acid attack either from the diet or deposits of plaque, can be strengthened by a mouthwash containing fluoride. Of these there are several on the market that are very helpful. The best of these are not easy to obtain out of the dental surgery. Duraphat is one of those, a Colgate product that is a very effective desensitiser while also giving greater protection to the enamel. One that is more common in chemists is called Fluorigard, a pleasant and easy-to-tolerate mouthwash, particularly useful for children over the age of six. But no fluoridecontaining mouthwash will be a substitute for effective mechanical plaque control. That is, using your toothbrush and interdental cleaners in a way that is effective in your mouth. Another useful additive is Chlorhexidine. This is a very effective short term treatment for Gingivitis. Short term because used in many forms it will cease to be useful after a few weeks. Like all treatments that work using an antibiotic effect, the bugs get wise to the effects. The most common mouthwash that contains Chlorhexidine is called Corsodyl, and while this will certainly help in the short term, it will also cause a brown stain that is often difficult to remove and very disfiguring. There are, however, other professionally available mouthwashes that contain

Chlorhexidine in a different formula that, while not losing the ability to be an effective treatment, do not cause this staining. They are called Curasept and there are several formulations. There are now also some mouthwashes that contain essential oils known to have therapeutic properties. Aloe Vera is added to some products which is known to have a soothing and healing effect. For patients that are experiencing problems with Dry Mouth Syndrome there are also mouthwashes that will help to replace some of the missing enzymes that occur with that condition. However, very importantly, an additive that is deliberately missing in all of the mouthwashes that are often recommended by the profession, is alcohol. Alcohol Alcohol is added to almost all of the mouthwashes

“...no fluoride-containing mouthwash will be a substitute for effective mechanical plaque control” that do not specifically say it is not added. This is because it lengthens the shelf life of the product. It is more about capitalism than it is about dental health! Alcohol not only does nothing for the health of your mouth, there is evidence that it is positively undesirable. It may be mentioned in the ingredients under a different name but Ethanol etc is still alcohol. It will sting and is extremely drying to your gums etc, these are all tissues that needs to stay wet to remain healthy. So if you are looking for a mouthwash always check the ingredients and make sure that there is no alcohol derivutive. E.g. Alcohol Free Fluorigard, Curasept 220, BioXtra. It is useful to note that virtually all mouth problems will start by allowing plaque to remain undisturbed in an area of the mouth. It is also useful to note that a mouthwash will leave any plaque that it encounters undisturbed. The highly effective Chlorhexidine rinses do not remove plaque. They work by preventing the normal life cycle of the

bacteria. It is tempting to think that by doing the swishing action, the plaque will be washed away. Not so. The bacteria that make up the bio film that we call plaque have had way to many years in their evolution to be disturbed by a little liquid washing over their heads! Plaque is a very sticky substance which will adhere as if its life depends upon it to the tooth surface. It is this form of advertising that, while attractive to look at, also tends to offer the magic bullet effect. Frequently the stinging is caused by the alcohol and is not some magic additive doing its deadly work to the bacteria. The taste of most mouthwashes is just that, taste. The additives that produce the taste are not effective at preventing others from smelling anything else that may be on exhaled air and even if they are it is only for a matter of minutes. Halitosis is prevented in the main by preventing the bacteria that cause the nasty niffs from living in your mouth. I am afraid that we are back to the old chestnut of interdental cleaning as it is in the interdental spaces that these bugs tend to live, especially if they have not been disturbed for a day or two. However, there is a mouthwash that contains a type of Chlorine Dioxide that will mask the smell for a short while as it forms a chemical bond with the sulphur compounds that these unpleasant bugs excrete. It is called Retardex and will help on a temporary basis. Only a very temporary magic bullet though, I am afraid, but then how effective could something be that is mainly water, if placed in the mouth and moved about a bit for less than a minute? However, being human we are so keen to embrace the easy option that it is always easier to sell the idea of a magic mouthwash than sell the idea of boring daily interdental cleaning with floss or better still interdental brushes. Interdental cleaning has never been the subject of intense advertising. Mouthwash has. No magic, quite boring, but wonderfully effective and the money saved on silver bullets might be useful to spend in ways that you can really enjoy!!

Pamper Me!

ABSOLUTE WEDDINGS

Exciting new type of bridal event launched P retty Clever Events and the Marry Me! Wedding Fairs team are launching a completely new kind of bridal event. ‘Pamper Me!’ has its inaugural launch at the Thistle Hotel Brighton on 15th July 21010, and the format has been created to answer the problem of the everincreasing saturation of wedding fairs on Sundays, crowding out the weekends of Spring and Autumn. The event is deliberately booked to be far away from any other competitors’ wedding fairs in the year’s calendar and it will be an evening event - also a

new concept. It’s a different format to other wedding fairs, a more sensual experience, with more interaction between exhibitors and visitors. Wedding fairs are really for the brides (and their friends and mothers!), so Pamper Me! is aimed very much at the female market. Exhibitors are encouraged to really showcase what they do and offer a chance for visiting brides, friends and mothers to touch, feel, try and test all the options on offer. Exhibiting costs are a real deal at only £75 plus VAT per stand because exhibitors are encouraged to offer the guests something in return, such as giveaways or special offers, samples, great stuff for the goody bags etc. There’s also a new concept for the fashion show, which instead of having a catwalk structure which can go on a bit, or be alienating, is an intimate eyelevel red carpet showcase, which means the girls can look at the outfits at close quarters. “We have offered the more traditional wedding fair set up over the last couple of years,” explains Sam Harrington-Lowe, one of the founding directors, “but we found that the market was becoming swamped. Not only with other wedding fair companies running events, but venues hosting their own too, all jostling to try and find a free Sunday to open on! And they were all in Spring or Autumn. So we decided to buck the trend and lead with something completely new. It’s been a great idea, we have had a fabulous response and plan to roll out more events like this over the coming months.” There’s a glass of bubbly for everyone on arrival, and a lovely goody bag to take away. The Inca trail

ABSOLUTE TRAVEL

Local businessman, Roger Clifton-Moore, recently took a Peruvian adventure to celebrate his 60th Birthday. Here he shares with our readers his journey where he discovered a beautiful land in Peru

H

ow would I celebrate my 60th birthday? Arranging a big party was not for me, I did not want to give the opportunity for friends and family to make repeated ‘ageism’ and ‘bus pass’ jokes - I preferred doing something more adventurous! After much consideration, the idea of a trip to South America, specifically Machu Picchu the ‘Lost City of the Incas’, was born. Myself, with two of my three kids and my friend Geoff Bush, were to join a party of ten others on the challenging ‘High Inca Trail’ trekking trip to Peru organised by The Adventure Company. The trip was in three parts: Lake Titicaca and Cusco; two days of sightseeing and, very importantly, aclimatising to the high altitude. Then The High Inca Trail and Machu Picchu; six days trekking and camping up to 5000 metres (higher than Mont Blanc) ending at the fantastic site of Machu Picchu. And finally, The Amazon Extension; our party of four spent an additional three days at the Sandoval Lake Lodge in the Peruvian Amazon. Puno and Lake Titicaca (3860 metres) From the port in Puno we were taken by boat to the floating reed islands of the Uros Indians. We had the benefit of a very experienced guide who explained the history and the way of life of the local inhabitants. It is clear that they are no longer as secluded as they once were, but they are still a unique sight and it was very interesting to learn about how they build and maintain their floating reed islands. On the way back to Puno we visited the old iron ship, The Yavari. Built in Scotland in the 1870’s, it was shipped to Chile and then carried up into the Andes on mules and llamas, to be assembled in Puno. It was the first iron ship on Lake Titicaca and is now being restored to sail on the lake once more. Cusco (3400 metres) From Puno we went by coach across the Altiplano via the La Raya pass (4,321 metres) to Cusco, visiting several places of interest along the way. Cusco, the former capital of the Inca Empire, is a must to visit both from the point of view of the Inca and Spanish cultural and architectural treasures as well as the many bars and restaurants. For the adventurous ‘foodies’ you can try deep fried whole guinea pig! Another must to visit is the fortress of Sacsayhuaman lying just outside Cusco city. The skillfully constructed outer walls consist of massive blocks of stone (the largest weighing over 350 tonnes) which must have been difficult to manouvre, let alone to cut and dress with such precision! The Inca Trail (3,500 to 5,000 metres) This is where the hard bit started; six days of trekking for over 70 kilometres, up and down mountains for five to seven hours per day, camping overnight with temperatures down to 3oc. All home comforts were now a distant memory; no hot showers, and the toilet was simply a hole in the ground. But it was worth it for the spectacular mountain views, clear night skies and Inca architectural sites to see on the way. We finished at the Sun

Our tour group at Sacsayhuaman

The trek continued to 5,000 meters (and a well-earned rest!)

Gate looking down at Machu Picchu on my 60th birthday! The day’s trail was winding to the distant mountain. The view was magnificent. The first sight of Machu Picchu Machu Picchu should be on everyone’s ‘must visit’ list even if you do it the easy way by train from Cusco. Our tour leader and guide, Silvia, ably supported by the whole Adventure Company team and local porters, very much enhanced our trip to Peru by her enthusiasm and her extensive knowledge of the Inca and Spanish history of her country. The Peruvian Amazon Our group of four extended our trip to Peru with a three day Amazon extension. We took an internal flight to Puerto Maldonado on the Madre de Dios River. A journey by river, foot and finally paddling across the lake in a canoe which took us to the Sandoval Lake Lodge. Dawn and sunset guided tours by experienced naturalist guides by boat around the lake were definitely the best way to see both the forest and lake wildlife. Additional treks into the rainforest by day and night gave us an insight into the ecology of the area. We ended our trek at The Sandoval Lake. And what a great way it was to end our Peruvian adventure.

PICNIC BITES Impress your friends and family this summer with these picnic treats ALFRESCO NIBBLES

Curried egg salad Make egg salad with hard-boiled eggs, mayo, curry powder, Dijon mustard, lime juice, salt, pepper, parsley, onion and apple. Tomatoes and peaches Toss together sliced seeded tomatoes and peaches, along with thinly sliced red onion and chopped parsley or rosemary. Dress at the last minute with olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper. Roast beef and blue cheese Start with whole-grain rolls. Smear blue cheese on one side and prepared horseradish on the other. Add red onion and sliced beef, pork or lamb. Pack lettuce, tomato and crisps on the side. Cornflake chicken bites Cut boneless chicken breasts into small pieces. Dip in milk or buttermilk, then dredge in seasoned crushed cornflake crumbs or cornmeal. Pan-fry in oil, drain, cool and eat cold with celery sticks, with ranch or blue cheese dressing for dipping.

ABSOLUTE HOTEL REVIEW Grand Junior Suite lounge

Luxury at its best Bill Murray escapes for a weekend with his family to a newly refurbished well known hotel in the capital for a weekend escape

TT

he Langham Hotel in the heart of London’s West End has recently undergone an incredibly comprehensive £80 million refit, that has examined, and then improved, almost every aspect of this landmark hotel. As you enter the impressive entrance hall, the fragrance of jasmine greets you along with some of the friendliest reception staff. Check in is quick and informal with room details and keys produced in a flash. A whistle-stop of this gorgeous shrine to good taste follows with the restaurants and bar being first on the map. The palm court is informal with a dose of Manhattan chic. Jazz and swing is the norm here and always live. The menu is light but still offers a great selection for any time of day; and the afternoon tea looked sublime. We were heading for dinner at the Landau that evening, so had to scale the nine floors in earnest if we were to make our reservation on time. I say ‘we’ as I was not alone but with my wife on this night of overwhelming decadence, we also had my 8-year-old son Toby, and my 11-year-old daughter Ella in tow. We got to the Junior Suite that we had been generously awarded to find sweeping views of the city, robes for all and tasty treats for us to share. The children were in heaven! The bathroom was luxurious with every kind of product for the ever forgetfuls - even a shaving kit for lazy, be-stubbled dads to curse at their leisure. The bed was the size of an oil rig and the kids had a TV loaded with every unreleased movie they had ever moaned about not seeing at the cinema. None of us wanted to get ready for dinner – our room was just too nice. I overruled the laziness and when dressed in our smartest attire we descended to the Landau restaurant for our supper. The Landau is a wonderfully designed, intimate restaurant dripping with understated chic. The staff

are copious yet each one makes you feel more welcome than the last. Our waitress hailed from Milan; indeed every one of the immaculate staff was Italian. The sommelier served champagne in an instant and explained that it was not ice cold because overchilling Champagne subdued the flavour. He could have said that it’s best served microwaved and we would’ve believed him; such was his sheer presence and obvious love of the vine. The kids were brought their juices and when they requested straws they were brought on a serving plate – they silently squealed with delight through their eyes! Straws on a plate… the stories for their friends just got their money shots! The Landau Restaurant is a Titan of taste. Seared fois gras on truffle mash, Lobster thermidor with a side of cassoulet and delicate slice of the most perfectly cooked pork belly I have ever tasted. The crisp South African white wine that came with the seafood was divine and balanced my meal beautifully. The crab starter was superb with just enough avocado to complement the fish. My wife followed with chicken that was delicious and presented beautifully. Ella had a duck parcel and spaghetti bolognese and Toby had a full spaghetti Neapolitan to start, and then bangers and beans! They loved the food too. Having eaten one of the greatest meals of our lives we retired to our sumptuous accommodation. Within minutes of doing our teeth we were all asleep. Perfect. Breakfast was upon us and feeling it was rude to resist we ventured downstairs to a formidable eggs, bacon and sausage. The actress and “Loose Women” panelist Linda Bellingham and her hubby sat at the table next to ours and gave a touch of celebrity to our meal. The kids had no idea who she was, but none the less, added her to their tale of yore that was their stay at the Langham Hotel.

Grand Junior Suite room

After breakfast we visited the hotel’s spa, gym and pool. This area offers a huge array of treatments. It also has a wonderful range of the most luxurious beauty and health products that you could possibly wish for. It’s perfect, and even with set times for the kids to swim it means that you really can treat them to a swim without hushing them too much and over considering the other guests. The secret to the Langahm is its staff. They are all incredible and make a real effort with children. Obviously this was a weekend, and so there were less business types to concern themselves with, only the mere presence of my two under-12s, but they genuinely made us feel welcome. From a five star hotel in the centre of London this is rare. We felt spoilt but never singled out and ultimately that is what you want if you are travelling with children. The Langham is divine and when coupled with its location, makes for a deliciously decadent stay in abject luxury. Seagulls’ new nesting ground

The American Express Community Stadium

A dream has been brewing for Brighton & Hove Albion fans for well over a decade, and Martin Perry is the man given the task to make that dream a reality… no pressure then! Our Editor Verity Craig went to meet the Chief Executive of The Albion at the new stadium where she saw that progress is taking shape quickly

R

ecently named ‘American Express Community Stadium’ from just a vision to concept, Martin Perry, and the Project Team he has led, have been there through thick and thin making sure that thousands of Albion fans have their dream made reality. Clearly one never to give up, Martin and his team is making sure through outstanding perseverance, that Brighton and Hove’s football club and its fans receives only the best. From its original design, to gaining that notorious planning permission with the local council, it was this team that drove the project forward from its onset and continues to do so. “It’s my life” he told me upon my visit to the stadium site. “I sleep, eat and breathe it day in day out; ask my wife. And the same is true for the rest of the people around me, they are very committed.” It all began 14 years ago when Martin (who originally grew up in Brighton but work took him away) sadly lost his mother who had still lived in Brighton. Obviously a sad time for him, he also felt crestfallen that he now had no reason to visit Brighton. “Just as I was thinking that I’ll have no reason to visit Brighton any more, the phone rang and it was the then Leader of Hove Council, Ivor Caplin. I was working for Alfred McAlpine at the time building a new stadium for Huddersfield Town. He said that Brighton also needed a new stadium and he asked me for help!” Of course the rest is history. Easy to hear now, but hearing first hand from Martin how tough those 14 years have been makes you realise how hard this man along with his colleagues have worked, fought and driven to make sure that our local football club receives an outstanding stadium; it’s been a rocky road to say the least.

54

Based in Falmer (almost on top of the railway station, making easy access for fans) you can’t help but be impressed when you have a first glance of the site in progress. As I approached from the A27 and saw its imposing steel arched roof for the first time, I felt shivers up my spine; you’d have to have been living on a desert island to have missed this long-running saga, so to see it now actually in progress is quite stirring. To make an average local feel this way, I wondered how it must make Martin feel, seeing it each day as he drives to work. “I still pinch myself each time I see it from the road. I still can’t believe that it is actually happening and is finally in progress. “But we have also been very lucky along the way. First of all Dick Knight, the former Chairman, was around at just the right time in 1997. He was prepared, when there was no-one else willing to take the huge risks involved, to put a substantial proportion of his personal wealth behind the club with absolutely no security whatsoever. He saved the club and without him it would not exist.” Another man who has famously played a massive role in making this dream a reality is local businessman Tony Bloom. Reportedly, he has generously given (well, invested) a staggering £80m to The Albion for the Amex to be built. And why? “Tony generously put that money into The Albion because he simply loves the club; he’s a fan who can,” according to Martin. “His grandfather played a big role in The Albion so it is in his blood too. Without Tony’s generous donation, this project would simply not be happening, simple as that.” Now as the Chairman of the football club since May 2009, Bloom is leading the club into a new era. “And then we have had other good people just when we needed them.”

ABSOLUTE FOOTBALL “We want all the fans to feel a part of each match here” Derek Chapman who runs a local contractor and development company, Adenstar Developments based in Portslade, joined the Board of the club not long after Dick took over. Still a director of the club, he acts as Construction Director. Martin explains: “It is his job to make sure that Buckingham, our main contractor, deliver the project on time and within budget. Eighteen months in and we are on target to do just that. “When we came back to Withdean, I appointed Richard Hebberd as our Operations Manager. He had just retired as the Ground Commander at Wembley for the Metropolitan Police and before that he was the Match Commander at Highbury. What he doesn’t know about the safe management of events in large venues like this isn’t worth knowing. He is making sure that the stadium is efficient, safe, attractive and exciting, for our supporters; particularly bearing in mind the growing numbers of women and young families that want to attend our matches.” It is this core team, which now including sales people, is over 12 people strong and growing every day, that has helped Martin get the project to where it is today. “We have talked to other clubs who are thinking of building a new stadium and they look enviously at the people we have got in our team.” It was in 1997 that the Seagulls (as the Albion is affectionately known) had to vacate the ground where they were based at the Goldstone site in Hove, where Toys R Us and such are now based; following two years ground sharing at Gillingham, they moved back to Brighton and have spent the

ABSOLUTE FOOTBALL “It will seat 22,500 fans comfortably, and when I say comfortably I mean comfortably; fans will enjoy padded seating rather than the usual plastic seats often found in such arenas” last 11 years in a far from ideal temporary home at Withdean. Once the club was back in Brighton a new prospective site in Falmer was found, and the planning application submitted, but it was not until two arduous public inquiries had taken place and a challenge in the High Court was overcome, that in 2008 the club was finally granted permission to build the Albion’s new home. Dick Knight was Chairman of the club throughout this long process and he and the fans, some of them big local names including Des Lynam and Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim, campaigned tirelessly. And it paid off. “The fans were fantastic, they wrote thousands of letters, gathered petitions, went on protest marches and lobbied until we got permission. They deserve the very best stadium and we are trying to make sure they get it,”says Martin. Complete, the project will cost a staggering £93m (£68m in construction cost alone). It will seat 22,500 fans comfortably and when I say comfortably, I mean comfortably; fans will enjoy plenty of legroom and wide seats which is unusual for this type of arena. There have also been areas placed in mind for extra seating areas if required at a later date, so that the the Amex is even expandable. Buckingham Contractors have clearly risen to the challenge. One of the first hurdles they came up against was the situation of the site itself; the site is steeply sloping and the west stand is sunk 4 storeys into the ground and so they had to move 140,000 m3 of chalk. This amount of chalk would involve 22,000 return lorry trips and so together with the Project Team a way was found to take it across the road to a council-owned site. Martin explained “We are very concerned about the impact a development like this could have on the environment and this was an ideal solution.” The site has progressed well beating all expectations. It’s on target and is already taking shape. The signature steel arch gives the impression of how the overall look will be and how incredibly huge the Amex will be when complete.

Every inch of the the Amex has also clearly been meticulously thought out with fans constantly at the forefront of every decision. At each end of the pitch, supporters who are lucky enough to have seats directly in behind the goal posts will feel as though they are actually part of the game on the pitch. “Contrary to the Withdean pitch where there is a large D shape and a huge distance between the goal and the fans, at this stadium those fans will be almost seated directly on the pitch.” Martin informed me. “We want all the fans to feel a part of each match here.” And they will; every single seat of the 22,500 seater stadium, from any height and angle, has been placed in a way that the direct view down or across the pitch is clearly visible. However, the stadium is also set to attract non-football fans too. For there are also nine superbly finished hospitality suites. Two of them having a capacity to hold up to 500 people are large enough for big events, from companies entertaining to balls, weddings or business award ceremonies. On a match day, the 1901 Club is geared to provide opportunities for corporate entertainment for the huge number of small and medium sized companies in Brighton and Hove, proved to be extremely popular with people clamouring to buy seats, and I for one look forward to attending any such events in these large and light glass walled rooms. Members already include Norman Cook and Des Lynam, naturally. So now on the lips of many is the question “will Brighton & Hove Albion now achieve promotion” when they have this state-of-the-art stadium to be envied the country over? “Creating a class team isn’t an overnight development” says Martin. “We will become the best, and yes it will take time as we want to do it right. We have some good youngsters coming through the ranks within our youth set up and we have a good budget. I am sure that the fans are going to be equally proud of the team as they are of the Amex”. The Amex is set to open July 2011.

T

he Brighton Marathon has proved a huge success for the Martlets Hospice, when 120 runners took part in the race in April. To date, the runners have raised over £60,000 for the Hospice. Staff at the Hospice celebrated the success of the runners and their supporters with a reception. Antonia Sheperd, Events Manager at the Hospice said “Brighton’s first marathon was a great day for the city and has been huge success for the Hospice. Our runners and their supporters worked incredibly hard to raise over £60,000 and I must extend a heartfelt thank you from all at the Hospice

for their fantastic work. We’re taking registrations for our 2011 Brighton Marathon charity places now and if runners have their own places we’d still like them to raise funds for us.” Tim Hutchings from Brighton Marathon also attended the reception. The charity is not one of the nominated charities for the 2011 race but runners can still raise funds for the Hospice. Runners are asked to contact Clem Hunnisett in the fundraising office on 01273 747455 or email clem@themartletshospice.co.uk for sponsor forms or to apply for an official Martlets Marathon place.

GUS GOLDING - a follow up to our story last month

L

ast month we reported how Brighton resident Gus Golding was taken ill in Thailand almost two months ago. After spending five weeks in intensive care in Bangkok he is now safely in a hospital back in the UK. The struggle goes on for Gus (21) who was diagnosed with asthma just one year ago. He is still seriously ill and his diagnosis is still slightly vague, as possible Churg Strauss Vasculitis or Idiopathic Chronic Eosinphilic pneumonia. These are diseases that affect the lung area, are rare and often misdiagnosed at the onset as asthma.

Gus also has the added trauma of dealing with a huge medical bill since his insurance company refused to support him after stating that his cover was invalid due to the undiagnosed lung problems being related to his previous respiratory medical history. His girlfriend Natalie, who was with Gus during his admittance to hospital, his air transfer to Bangkok and his stay in intensive care, was also given the added blow of being refused an extension to her insurance cover and the insurance company insisted she flew home due to the city of Bangkok as being declared in

a state of emergency. It was at this stage that Natalie decided she had to do something positive to support her partner and decided to fund raise to help pay the bill which presently stands at just over £100,000. Gus’ story has received media coverage in local papers, magazines, radio and television. People have been very supportive and various fund raising events have taken place over the last month or so. More details will be posted on the ‘HELP FOR GUS’ facebook page as and when events are arranged and confirmed. ABSOLUTE

H

amptons International, one of the UK’s premier international residential agencies is sponsoring the Gatcombe Park Festival of British Eventing for the eighth year. The event takes place in the surroundings of Gatcombe Park, the private country home of HRH Anne The Princess Royal, between the 6th and 8th August 2010, and hosts the world’s best horses and riders. The festival includes a combination of dressage, show jumping and cross country;

incorporating the British Open, Intermediate and Novice Championships. Andrew Marshall, Regional Sales Director for Hamptons International comments, “We are very excited to have the opportunity to support Gatcombe Park for the eighth year. The event is renowned among equestrian enthusiasts and provides an exciting opportunity to watch expert riders compete. The weekend is a highlight of the summer calendar, bringing together top class

eventing, a great shopping village, arena attractions and entertainment – a perfect day for all the family!” Hamptons International will have a full hospitality unit at the event, offering activities for children, as well as providing expert advice on the latest news in the property market and showcasing a selection of properties currently available for sale and let. Hamptons International will be raising money across the weekend for the company’s corporate charity – The Prince’s Trust.

y implementing the Capital Gains Tax increase for higher-rate taxpayers from midnight tonight, we can expect a more stable pricing outlook for 2010 without the spike effect on housing stock levels that we predicted, had the changes come into effect in 2011. “From a housing supply point of view, an immediate Capital Gains Tax increase means demand from property investors looking for short-term capital gains will diminish. Also, owners of investment properties are more likely to hold onto investments for a longer term to benefit from taper relief

60

“Capital Gains Tax changes unlikely to accelerate the shift in power from sellers to buyers in property market” or future changes to CGT allowances. If this implementation had been delayed until 2011, then we would have seen an immediate rise in new properties coming onto the market, benefiting those looking to purchase by giving a wider selection of properties to choose from.

Positivity slowly returns Landlords get a leg up from the new HIPS replacement policy says Ben cannon of Lanes Lettings

H

IP HIP hooray… I know you may have seen that phrase quite a lot in the press recently (the world cup is in full swing as I write this), and you are probably thinking Lanes Lettings don’t sell property so why would the cancellation of HIPS be such a cause to celebrate for us? Well with a lot of the accidental landlords starting to go back to the sales market, this gives more encouragement for them to return, which is great for professional landlords as it means less competition for tenants and a higher demand for your property, and getting a more desirable rent. RICs (Royal Institute for Chartered Surveyors) reports that a net balance of 30% of chartered surveyors are now reporting rising rents. This is in comparison with a completely flat response (signifying no rise at all) at the beginning of the year. And according to the same report this time last year, a record net balance of 58% reported falling rents, showing that stability has returned for the buy-to-let landlord, so now is a great time to own a rental property. Another encouraging sign for landlords is that 30% more respondents are seeing an increase in demand for rental property. This shows that people still intend to rent, despite increased mortgage availability. It’s all well and good saying that it’s great to own a buy-to-let property but there is still a lot more involved than simply ‘sticking’ a tenant in. There are many laws and regulations that you have to abide by, and in inexperienced hands you could end up getting fined or worse: a prison sentence! By using

Lanes Lettings you can rest assured that the people that are dealing with your rental property know what they are doing and abiding by the law; giving you that peace of mind to sit back and relax and know everything is being taken care. You also get your rent on the due date, not 7 to 14 days later. If you need some advice or simply want Lanes Lettings to take over the management of your property, call me today on 01273 600068 or alternatively pop into one of our ‘Wednesday Surgeries’ (you will need to book in a time as appointments go quickly). We are still finding the surgeries hugely popular and have had a great response to them so remember to call well in advance to avoid disappointment. I would like to thank ‘Sarah from Hove’ for her suggestion of a ‘quiff competition’ as a charity event. I don’t know if that was a direct hint at my hair but she suggested we get loads of people with quiffs to pay to enter a competition and get judged as the best quiff in Brighton and Hove with a donated prize and hopefully press coverage for the winner. As always, your suggestions really help and it goes towards a good cause, The Rockinghorse Appeal. With all this in mind, Lanes Lettings have been having an amazing couple of months with lots of properties being let and as always we need more. If you have a property that is coming up for let or is currently empty, don’t hesitate to contact us. Have a great July and I look forward to speaking with you in August!

In the countryside Countryside living is what many people aspire to. Getting away from the noise and pollution of the built up areas, to the peace and fresh air of the great outdoors on your doorstep

S

ome of the reasons for moving to the countryside are obvious, and desirable to all. Fresh air, no noise from traffic, fewer people and a generally easier and more relaxed life. Even those who once thrived on the buzz of the city life usually decide that country life would be the ultimate goal. These days, with high tec communications it is easier to up sticks and move into peaceful environs, without having to make a big career change. You can change your way of life, without having to change your job. More people

than ever are now working from home, and indeed many businesses do not have a base, with all their employers and contract workers being based at home. So you can enjoy the best of both worlds. It is also the case that you will probably be able to get more property for your money in the countryside. City centre prices are the highest, and you could find that an extensive property, with a good plot of land, is cheaper out of the city than an apartment in the centre of town. Either way, it is certain that by living in the country you will enjoy a better quality of life.

South Downs If you live in the countryside in Sussex, you will probably be in or close to the South Downs, one on England’s most beautiful areas. Recently designated as a National Park, the South Downs stretch from Winchester to Eastbourne, takes in such landmarks as the Long Man of Wilmington, Clayton Windmills and Devils Dyke. The South Downs Way is popular with ramblers, and the Monarch Way comes across the downs and ends in Shoreham. To have a property in this area is to enjoy some of the best countryside in Britain. Poet Algernon Charles Swinburne describes the South Downs as “the green smooth-swelling unending downs.”

The market... End of HIPs, increased mortgage lending and rising prices, but market to remain fragile As widely predicted, within a matter of weeks of taking office, the coalition government suspended the use of Home Information Packs. Introduced in 2007 in England and Wales, with the aim of speeding up the house selling process by obliging sellers to provide much of the required conveyancing information, the news has been welcomed by virtually everyone involved in the house selling process - especially estate agents. The suspension of HIPs (the Government still needs to pass legislation outlawing them altogether) is likely to encourage more house sellers to put their properties on the market, which should help to ease the unprecedented shortage of stock. This has been a major issue over the last two and a half years, so it's likely that there will be a better balance between supply and demand in the months ahead. No longer will would-be sellers have to shell out between ÂŁ300 and ÂŁ500, plus VAT, just to put their property on the market. The requirement for an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) still remains, but with the level of properties on the market still extremely low by historical standards, anything designed to loosen the shackles on supply must be regarded as positive news. At the same time, UK interest rates have been kept on hold at a record low of 0.5%, the fifteenth consecutive month without a change. Interest rates have now been 0.5% since March 2009 and, although inflation in April hit its highest level in 17 months (3.7% being well above the Bank of England's target of 2%), most economists are predicting that the Bank will not raise interest rates until next year. Economic recovery is still very weak and is likely to be fragile for some time. A further boost for the housing market came recently, when the Bank of England announced that mortgage lending had crept up in April, compared with the previous month - rising by 2% from 49,008 approvals in March to 49,871 in April. Whilst this is no dramatic reversal of fortune, and continues to demonstrate the very delicately balanced nature of the mortgage and property markets, it does at least show that liquidity is gradually easing. So, all in all, it's more good news this month for the housing market in Sussex. Whilst the national picture is still patchy, with the market appearing to be increasingly sluggish the further north one goes, our region is currently outperforming most other areas of England. In fact, according to the latest monthly survey from the Nationwide, house prices rose by another 0.5% in May, pushing the price of the average UK home up to ÂŁ169,162. Prices have now risen in 12 of the last 13 months, since reaching a much publicised trough in February 2009. At that time, they were down by an average of 19.3% on their October 2007 peak, but have since recovered by some 12.2%. Whether the Budget on 22nd June will have an impact on the well-being of the market remains to be seen, although I am hopeful that the new Government will seek to support home owners and the housing market. But, then again, as an optimistic estate agent, I would say that...

ABSOLUTE PLACES But, back to racing. We were shown the allweather track; again I marvelled - it looked too narrow to allow two horses to run full pelt side by side. “There’s room enough,” said Suzy. “Horses have to learn to race close to one another.” Now to be a small racecourse trainer in this competitive world is not easy. The competition is immense. But Suzy and Sergio punch above their weight and have their share of winners.

“ The horses are kept in a small, friendly yard, and the stables were part of the Tote buildings for the old course. “We take pride in keeping our horses happy,” said Suzy”

“What are the problems?” I asked her. “Well, Tim, you have visited us on a marvellous day but this winter was horrible. Snow, hard ground, ice – for two months there was little we could

Suzy and Sergio with Material World and her owners at Cheltenham

do. And of course there’s the recession. Our owners are treating us kindly but if there’s less money around inevitably we’ll feel it. Perhaps the biggest problem of all for us trainers, and there’ve been many comments in the press, is the declining prize money. There’s more racing than there used to be, and consequently even less money to go around. To enter a race when the prize money is less than £2,000 is simply not sensible, and the problem is getting worse.” Suzy Smith has worked for a number of trainers, since her career started at the age of fourteen with the Epsom-based trainer Andrew Denson. Coincidently, I had a holiday job on the same estate, just as a hand, mucking out and plucking poultry for Christmas. I remember watching in awe as the horses were ridden out in the mornings. Schooling young horses on a cold, wet morning calls for skill and courage. Later Suzy worked in France, and after some nine

years working under various mentors, including Gardie Grazell, she finally got her licence. Her last hurdle was the Jockey Club, where her great-aunt helped satisfy the Club’s financial inspectors. On our return to the stables Sergio made us a cup of coffee. Suzy and Sergio are good company and for two pins Roger and I would have stayed longer. But there’s little time off for racecourse trainers and they had a horse entered for a race in Salisbury on the following day. Sergio, who comes from Chile, paid Suzy a compliment. “There’s nobody in the country with a better eye for a horse than Suzy, and there’s no doubt that the horses, love this place, just as we do.” To learn more about Suzy Smith Racing and follow the progress of their remarkable filly, Material World, go to www.suzysmithracing.co.uk

agriculture and rural life. As the 2010 South of England Show got underway in unusual fashion on ‘Dress Up Thursday’, hats and heels were very much the order of the day. Absolute Brighton Magazine founders, Verity and Paul Craig, judged the beautiful attire where competition was hot. Plumpton Racecourse also sponsored the day. Women put on their finery for the occasion, which resembled Ladies’ Day at Ascot. Lesley Jenks from Wivelsfield Green was judged to have the most flamboyant outfit. Gentlemen,

too, joined in the fun this year with sartorial elegance to the fore. Christopher Horner from Uckfield walked away with the title of ‘best dressed man’. fter running a property business for twenty-five years, John and Karen Menetrier are opening an independent, family run, art gallery to sell contemporary art in Brighton. John and Karen have collected art for many years and want to turn their love of art into a new lifestyle. J’Adore Art opens on July 4th 2010 at 11.00 am with Bob Dylan’s latest limited edition release of prints. Whilst travelling on tour between 1989-1992, great American singer, songwriter and artist Bob Dylan created a collection of drawings that were published in a book entitled ‘Drawn Blank series’ in 1994. These expressive works capture Dylan’s chance encounters and observations. A carefully selected collection of Dylan’s paintings have been chosen to be published as Signed Limited Edition Graphics to enable collectors, and art lovers throughout the world, access to Bob Dylan’s works of art. Along with Bob Dylan’s prints, other contemporary artists that will include: Adam Barsby, Daisy Bowman, Louise Dear, Caroline Shotton, Keith Proctor, Drew Darcy, Sarah Graham, Simon Claridge and John Waterhouse to name just a few. They will also stock sculptures by Lorenzo Quinn and Jennine Parker, and will be the stockists of Tim Cotterill’s ‘Frogman’ collection in Brighton. Each Frogman sculpture is created in a limited edition along with his signature on every sculpture. The Gallery is situated near The Lanes at: 2 Nile Pavilions, Nile Street, Brighton (previously The Big and Tall Clothing Company). www.jadore-art.co.uk

unning annually since 2005, The Chap Olympiad is one of Britain’s most eccentric

sporting events, attracting visitors to the nowfamous celebration of ‘athletic ineptitude and immaculate trouser creases.’ Welcoming only the elegant and unathletic, the Chap Olympiad is a delightful day out of themed sporting events, live music, side shows and refreshments. All Olympiad guests and participants are encouraged to come in period dress, which in the past has ranged from Victorian explorers to flappers and Second World War RAF pilots. The Olympiad is designed to reward panache rather than sporting prowess, and requires the minimum of physical exertion. Events separate the chaps from the cads, and gentlemen (and ladies) compete to win the coveted bronze, silver and gold cravats, or take a self-congratulatory puff of the Olympiad pipe. Bourne and Hollingworth will be providing classic cocktails, beer, wine and soft drinks. Enjoy sandwiches, hog roast, and afternoon tea with homemade cakes and delicacies etc. The Chap Olympiad Saturday July 17th 1pm Tickets £15 02076368228 www.thechap.net Bedford Square Gardens, London WC1
