everyone (as they do in the Brighton sunshine) is gradually coming out of hibernation. So the town is bustling once again, and as another sign of the summer, the City has been busy with the excitement that the festival brought with it this year. From the ever glamorous, beautiful and entertaining Ladyboys Of Bangkok to the many Art Open Houses and the stand up shows, there was so much to choose a hot seat at!

Oh I say! What a perfectly
lovely hat Our Fashion Spy ‘GS’ takes a look at what’s hot and what’s definitely not for this years race days

his Spring Summer season will I’m sure produce the usual parade of slightly wonky hats at prestige events that have been found at the back of wardrobes, prodded, pulled to and fro and jammed onto the head in the last hour of desperation. ‘Throw them aside’ I say and go for something small! An easy way to follow the trend for elegant chic millinery is to search out vintage pieces and customise them accordingly. The Lanes in Brighton have always been a fabulous resource for those in the know and many vintage fashion dealers in Brighton would be more than happy to match a modern outfit to a perfect little ‘Toque’. Keep It Simple Thinking of shapes, there will always be a smattering of large picture hats reminiscent of dear Joan C in an episode of Dynasty. They can be welcomed back with a sense of irony, and look fabulous on a young women (the wearer must not have seen the show first time around!) A definite ‘No No’ for now is the large Edwardian Hat /Mad Hatter type with a large crown that was produced in the 1990’s. I feel these should be left on top (or hopefully down the back) of the wardrobe… unless of course you are reproducing the complete Beaton inspired Ascot Gavotte outfit which would look sensational.
18
Nude Is Good For me this season, following the neutrals /nude trend that we featured in the May issue fashion shoot of the magazine I would extend that to include the hat and shoes. The natural toned outfit is then accessorised with just one strong shade/tone to suit your colouring. This has a classic timeless feel, which also worked for style icons such as Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn, and featured in the recent third series of cult show Madmen (set in the world of 1960’s Madison Avenue advertising). We used strong flat vermilion/scarlet in jewellery and bags with our brunette model for the shoot, which would also work for blondes as well with perhaps soft pink as another option, though it does of course depend on your natural colouring. Yves Klein blue o Turquoise for redheads, of the “Joan Holloway” type would also look great.
as it is a tricky look to carry off unless you are playing Carmen or Jayne Seymour. Another way to create stunning headwear is to purchase an Alice Band ready accessorised with flowers/leaves and stitch on your own millinery net and easy to do; strictly Extraneous stapling the net on works just as well and can be hidden by the flowers and leaves for those with no needlework skills. Millinery net can be found
Be careful How You Accessorise Your Head Piece Investing in these accessories now will take you into the next season where hot reds (not pink reds) will follow through to tone with camel, which will be the new black for AW 2010. I advise against florals in headwear, unless you are attending a vicar’s garden party and will be surrounded by roses and thorns! Also avoid lace,

ABSOLUTE FASHION at most haberdashery shops in many shades often helpfully in cream from around £2.99 a metre. This should be shaped into a rosette or waves by gathering/folding and securely fixed to the band leaving enough to fall over the eyes. Comparing prices with readymade fascinators, this may be the way forward as many are trimmed with shaved feathers and look a little déclassé. More creative and eco friendly is to accessorise with vintage ostrich/pheasant feathers, velvet flowers or a costume jewellery broach to create a unique look. You Don’t Have To Break the Bank John Lewis does have a selection of well priced hats / fascinators, but I would advise taking your outfit with you when you buy and perhaps following some of the guidelines set out above. They have their own in house pieces from around £30 that would need restyling (as per the shaved cockfeather trims) and also some stunning asymmetric statement pieces, which are very Calaboose! For those with price points to follow, BHS Allusions line has a good selection of accessorised Alice Bands, which we also featured last month, as does TopShop and Evans. I thoroughly approve of anyone who makes an effort with a hat, so choosing to wear one at all scores points; especially in this age of street wear and shiny nylon tracksuits! Though if you decide to go the whole hog and make one from scratch, think small as you may find yourself haunted by the ghost of Mrs Gertrude Shilling. And unless you have the skills of her son to create similar masterpieces, I would think twice; acres of tulle, rhinestones and feathers detaching themselves from your head and flying across a racecourse could produce unforeseen circumstances and the cancellation of the 4.30pm! Good luck! Left page top: Simple chic nude tones were used in last months fashion shoot in Absolute Brighton Left page bottom: Flake hat - don’t go for anything top heavy, says GS! Here’s my guide of who and what to look out for at this years event. Maria Allen: This talented young jewellery designer has already secured over 50 stockists globally, including an exclusive collection for high street hero Ollie & Nic. Her cute and fantastical necklaces include carrousels, teacups and birdcages. My personal favourite for the new season is her ladybird time piece (pictured left). Maria’s designs can be found in Brighton in Silvarado and Snoopers Paradise.

No fashion week would be complete without at least one member of the Central St Martins Alumni. Flik Hall is one of those such designers and her training here, as well as placements at both Giles Deacon and Henry Holland, have shaped her as a designer that creates both wearable and innovative. Her first collection can be seen at the couture fashion show. Andrew Bannister: After gaining pattern-cutting skills whilst on placement at Vivienne Westwood, here is a menswear designer who is not afraid to stand out. His combination of interesting cuts and bold prints come together to create a unique take on menswear design. Sex, politics, religion and volcanoes... which are we not meant to discuss in public? Well my sore point currently is volcanoes as that seemingly insipid Eyjafjallajökull in Iceland robbed me of a glamour trip to Rome. My wife and I were to join two businessmen at Heathrow on a private flight en route to Rome from New York as guests of an old personal friend, Yohannes Mengesha, a Prince and grandson of the late exiled Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie. A well-deserved storybook weekend away at a series of my friend’s Royal Family celebrations after all the events of the past several weeks was not meant to be ours. However, I did get to partake in the surprise, runaway, success fairytale extravaganza that was The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party & Alice in Wonderland Fashion Catwalk Show at Table Restaurant in MyHotel. It was hosted by the creatives at The Usual Suspects Hair Salons in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. The event, which we had high hopes for, positively erupted into the slickest and best-mounted soiree of the year so far. Scores of images of the guests, fashions and models are still being flashed across many facebook profiles weeks later and it will feature through the summer in British Airways’ inflight magazine High~Life, thanks to the efforts of event co-host and Senior BA Purser Lee Denton. My private party spring list was full too with an uproarious birthday bash for the wonderfully named, bubbly blonde, Sam Downstairs, at which I caught up with Marc Abraham, the TV vet and author of four children’s books pending release in 2011. The event, which started off in Bottle at MyHotel, moved onto The Blue Man Moroccan Restaurant, where Majid Bensilman produced an endless buffet of his cuisine and joined in the general carousing. I managed to wrangle the details of Mr. Abraham’s London-based literary agent before departing. Thanks again Marc. In amongst all this was an explosive first night for Brad Carlton’s new venue Tonik Bar Hove on Blatchington Road, that saw many happy faces turn out. My wife’s good friend, Morag Ranford, European Regional Executive for The Hard Rock International empire, flowed into town from London and lavished us with a long and liquid lunch over the yummy fare at The Connaught and very recently I was shown around the city’s newest karaoke bar, Nine Rooms, by manager Ritchie Hawker at an informal first night opening. I’ve been charged with its later launch at the end of this month for an exclusive, pared-down guest list of just 60! Hard tackle for me, as my last big launch in the city exceeded the venue’s capacity of 324 guests by 500! Of course it’s also been the sexy days and nights of the Fringe Festival. We’ve been treated to a bonus bag of local but nationally known acts like Michael “Atters” Attree plying his “paranormal” comedy satire at his Chaporgasmic Terrors Show at St. Peters Church. Once again the city’s been engaged by the dubious yet infectious charms of the internationally touring Ladyboys of Bangkok which Karin and I attended, in the company of The Usual Suspects co-owners Victoria Allen and Maryam Salehi, along with Absolute’s glossy magazine team. Not leaving out the fevered political writhing that captivated us all. The newly elected Brighton Pavilion Green Party MP Caroline Lucas, whom I met last year when we were both celebrity judges at a contest, was feted at The Royal Sovereign on the Saturday following the bewildering elections. Here was Brighton’s woman-of- the-hour and her guests who raved about Head Chef EJ’s edibles at a crowded party that spilled out onto Preston Street. Sex, politics, religion and volcanoes? Save them for dinner parties. There’s always much more to spout about. PJ www.twitter.com/socialitepete www.facebook.com/peter.jarrette ABSOLUTE

ABSOLUTE INTERVIEW
SPORT TALK AND THE WORLD CUP Are you finding it tough juggling a daily radio show with being a mum of twins? It is pretty hectic but we do have help. Kenny (Gabby’s husband ex Scottish rugby player Kenny Logan) and our nanny were joking that at least they know where I am every day! And at least I leave and come home at the same time every day. As one of the BBC’s World Cup presenters in South Africa, you must be looking forward to the World Cup? I can’t tell you how excited I am about it! Having been out to South Africa last November to take in a few games I can honestly say I think this World Cup will be the best ever. The South African people are so excited and hungry to show the world they can put on this great tournament. And the carnival atmosphere at games out there is like nothing I’ve ever seen. There’s no correlation between the noise of the crowd and what’s happening on the pitch - they’re just noisy for the entire duration of the match. It’s absolutely full on and makes our Premier League crowds look really tame. What is it about the World Cup that makes it such a spectacle? I’ve been lucky enough to have covered a few World Cups and the atmosphere is always so special. It’s a melting pot of different cultures with everyone so happy just to be there, having made such huge efforts to travel from their own country’s. But this year I’m confident we’re going to witness something truly memorable. It’s the first one in Africa, it’s in the same time zone as UK and with such a spectacular backdrop, it’s going to be truly exotic. I am truly privileged to be a part of it; although, the BBC and ITV haven’t yet divvied up the games so I don’t know which specific ones I’ll be working on but I’m there for five weeks and it promises to be the best and most intense five weeks of my professional life. 24

professional rugby player, hosts her own Radio 5 Live show and will be one of the BBC’s main presenters at this month’s South African football World Cup. Danny Masters catches up with the sports-mad glamorous mum of two Do you secretly dream of presenting the final? I can’t say I do because Gary Lineker is of course the BBC’s main football presenter. I’m lucky in that I cover other sports and have other shows and interviews to think about. If I was just focused on football and wanting to host the final, it would drive me insane. Since your husband Kenny Logan was a Scottish rugby international, does that make you officially a WAG? I suppose it does. But then the Wags in rugby don’t really have the same status as the footballers’ Wags! I think the amount that a football Wag spends on their wardrobe is probably a rugby player’s salary. I remember going on a rugby trip with Kenny and the Scotland squad - one player’s girlfriend was a doctor and one gorgeous girl was a lawyer, while another had her own PR company, so there was a high level of intellect and there were no full time Wags. You work in TV but what sort of programmes do you secretly hate? I really loathe those ‘Police Camera Action’ type shows or any programme based purely on CCTV cameras. As soon as I hear a narrator say, ‘Look
what happened when a man tried to break into this warehouse’, off goes the TV. It’s just so boring and really cheap! As a rule, I can’t stand anything that’s on any of the channels from 113 onwards. Whereas I throroughly enjoyed the recent BBC2 programme, ‘A history of Scotland.’ That’s the BBC at its best - making really good programmes that are educational, fascinating and that involve a bit of thought and some academic research.
completely natural way - like women drivers do when they’re sat at traffic lights, examining themselves in the rear view mirror. She wasn’t embarrassed and was so natural and down to earth.
Having done Strictly Come Dancing, would you appear in any other reality show? I never thought of Strictly as a reality show. I genuinely went on there to learn to dance. I enjoy watching ‘I’m a Celebrity’ and I think it would be really interesting to undertake those challenges, but I’m really bad at not having anything to do so that would drive me insane.
Which sportsperson would you most like to interview? Aside from Tiger Woods, tennis player Roger Federer! He would be fascinating because unlike Tiger he wasn’t a teenage protégé. He was able to grow up largely unaffected and become his own man so I’d love to discover what makes him tick.
“I think the amount that a football Wag spends on their wardrobe is probably a rugby player’s salary” Who would play you in a film of your life? If I was being vain, I’d like Kate Winslet. People said there was a similarity between us when she was a bit rounder and less well groomed… even my daughter thought there was a resemblance. Or, perhaps Meryl Streep. I interviewed her last year for my radio show and I loved her. When I walked into her dressing room she was looking in the mirror like any other middle aged woman, pulling back the skin on her face and examing the lines in a
You always look immaculate, where do you shop? Like a lot of working mums, I’m a big one for shopping online –and the clothing website ‘neta-porter’ is top of my list of favourites.
Have you ever crossed swords with scary Man United boss Sir Alex Ferguson? I always love interviewing Sir Alex. You never know what sort of mood he’s going to be in but if you can unlock something he’s interested in he’ll go for it. Last time I interviewed him we were talking about the great Real Madrid sides of the past and he was suddenly on a roll. From coming in and saying “I’ve got two minutes’” he was there for half an hour. So he’s never turned his temper on me but that’s through luck and not talent on my part. Finally, please tell us England really can win the World Cup this summer! All I can say is we’ve got a good chance. But then you can say that about a lot of teams including Spain, Brazil and Italy. With manager Fabio Capello we’re certainly well equipped to do very well. We just need to hope that we get that little bit of luck that all teams need. I just pray I don’t end up screaming at England missing penalties again!

urtains add a finishing touch to any room. They can transform your room as you wish with curtains to give it a classy, chic or trendy look. Before choosing curtains take note of the size, shape and the style of windows or any place that you want to hang them. You can add height to a room by hanging full length curtains or you can give a room an airy look with short and bright curtains. Today there are literally countless varieties of curtains available in all hues and patterns to suit the décor of your home, from ready-made to custom-made. You can also find an assortment of curtain rods ranging from stylish and trendy to elegant and classic. Perfect curtains with matching rods that blend with your room décor can enhance the whole ambience of the room. Some useful tips for choosing the perfect curtains; • Take care to blend your curtain fabric with that of your upholstery. This will give a uniform look to the room. Maybe take a colour from a pattern in the room, and have a contrasting plain drop. • Choosing the right curtain is not enough, you also have to give attention to tablecloths, towels or bed linens in the room. Colours and textures of all these fabrics should blend well to enhance the ambience of a room. • You can create space within a room to establish a social zone by placing carpets or attractive rugs. • If you want to let air and light into your room then go for gauzy or sheer curtains. • To have more control of the light that enters your room you can use venetian blinds instead of curtains. • If the room is already cluttered with lots of pictures, furniture and other accessories, the best choice is to select muted or neutral colours for curtains and also for your upholstery. • Keep in mind that curtains are not just for windows. You can improvise and use them to separate a long hallway or other areas. • If you have leftover fabrics from curtains, use them to redecorate your furniture to match your curtains.
26
Net curtains once had a reputation for being a rather old-fashioned addition, but are now making a comeback. They allow a level of privacy while letting light continue to shine through the window, and can enhance the cosy feel of a room. Standard voile nets are a made from a very fine, semi transparent material, able to be embroidered with decorations, but most of the time are left plain, with only the fine weave as pattern. Cafe curtains are a cheaper alternative to hanging full net curtains. You only screen the bottom half of the window which affords a level of privacy. The are normally used in the kitchen, but there is no rule saying they can’t be used in any other areas of the house Jardiniere curtains are full window length. They are shaped so there is an arch in the middle so you can see outside. While allowing a gap to see through, they still cover a larger area than cafe curtains.

Dads and their lawns J
une is a lovely month to be in the garden. With the evenings getting longer and brighter you can use your garden or patio as a great extension to your home, and just sit back and relax – once you’ve mowed the lawn. It’s at this time of year that lawns need to be mowed more frequently and it’s traditionally one of those garden jobs that falls into the male domain. So, in celebration of Father’s Day (taking place on 20 June) here are some key pointers on getting that perfect lawn from The Easy Guide to Lawn Care, an informative leaflet produced by The Royal Horticultural Society and the Horticultural Trades Association and available at local garden centres around the UK. • During the summer months it may be necessary to mow at least once a week • Raise the mower blades when mowing in very hot weather • Do not mow when grass is wet or during a drought • For electric mowers, use a circuit breaker for your own safety should you mow over the lead • Don’t collect your clippings during dry spells to help conserve moisture
❋ ❋❋ ❋
❋ ❋❋ ❋
• Water in dry spells unless there is a water shortage • Newly planted lawns need plenty of water • It’s better to water thoroughly from time to time rather than little and often • Avoid watering in the heat of the day • For small weeds use a spot lawn weed killer or physically remove • Repair bare patches either with turf or by re-seeding A large expanse of lawn can create a wonderful feeling of space in any garden. It blends perfectly with your beds and borders and provides space for your family and friends to play and relax. If you haven’t got a mower, then a trip to your local garden centre is a must where you will get advice on which one is best for your particular lawn requirements, and if you’ve got some National Garden Gift Vouchers you can put them towards the cost. It’s a busy time in the garden with many tasks to occupy any gardener – not just lawn management. The ‘to do’ list should also include ensuring that all your plants are adequately fed and watered (particularly those in baskets and tubs), hoeing the vegetable plot and borders, picking your first fruits, sowing French and runner beans, weeding, pest control and harvesting vegetables sown in the Spring. This month is also great for planting new and different perennial and annual plants as experiments in pots and borders. One that is great for pots, containers and borders (as well as a Father’s Day gift) is Penstemon (also known as Beard Tongue). Native to North and Central America it does exceptionally well in the UK and is part of the same plant family as the Snapdragon and Foxglove. The Penstemon is easy to grow and care for and gives a display of colour – white, bright red, deep purple, pink and yellow – from late Spring to the early frosts. It does well in a sunny spot, but is best not disturbed, once planted in its position it is happy to stay put.

ABSOLUTE BEAUTY
The face of the future The Clinic in Brighton can enhance more than your smile
W
hen it was opened by Dr Jeff Amos in 2002, The Clinic was the forerunner of a new generation of ‘boutique’ dental practices in Brighton. Unshackled by the restraints and limitations of the NHS system, it offered a range of treatment possibilities aimed at the dentally-aware patient who required more than basic maintenance of his or her teeth. Jeff’s intuition that there was a growing demand in the city for more sophisticated and cosmetic dentistry proved well-founded, and The Clinic hit the ground running. To date, over 2000 patients have been through its doors to receive treatment ranging from simple mercury-free fillings to complex implant work. Ever-evolving, the practice has now expanded into the field of facial aesthetics. These widely-used, extremely safe treatments are increasingly becoming a part of the commonplace grooming regime, with people choosing to book in for a course of ‘wrinkle treatment’ - often, at the same time as their routine dental examination. Botox® is a safe-to-use bacterial toxin which, when injected into the facial muscles in
minute quantities, relaxes them and effectively neutralises the culprits responsible for frown lines, forehead lines and ‘crow’s feet’ around the eyes. Amazingly, it can also prevent excessive underarm sweating! The whole procedure is virtually painless and takes about 10 minutes. Although the therapy ‘retrains’ the muscles significantly, Botox® injections need to be repeated every four to six months, as the material is broken down by the body. Restylane® and Juvéderm® are naturallyoccurring filler substances that smooth out wrinkles and lines, and restore fullness to lips that have thinned with the passage of time. These gels are injected into the skin to create volume and, due to the degradable nature of the hyaluronic acid that they are made from, also need to be ‘topped-up’ regularly. However, in some cases a degree of permanent improvement seems to result from the therapy. Many argue that dentists are the people best suited to carry out these procedures, as they are the healthcare professionals that give the most injections and generally, therefore,
have the most refined and gentlest technique. Moreover, they are experts at providing pain relief – Jeff, for example, gives local anaesthetic in the usual way when performing lip enhancement, so that what could be a very uncomfortable 10 minutes is completely painless. The Clinic remains primarily a dental surgery – albeit, an aesthetically orientated one that has provided perfect crowns and veneers crafted by its award-winning London laboratory for many patients over the years. However, dental and facial therapies obviously are complementary and can produce stunning results together. As countless celebrities have demonstrated, the combination of an enhanced smile and facial rejuvenation can raise your self-esteem, improve your social life and even elevate your career prospects. In other words, it can change your life! The Clinic Unit 5, Gloucester Yard 121-123 Gloucester Road, Brighton Tel: 01273 677333 www.jeffamos.co.uk

The thin edge Celebrity steal their style
Mark Woolley is the owner and creative director of Electric Hairdressing. Mark splits his time between the Brighton and London salons. For appointments call 01273 202088 www.electric-hair.com
With Fathers’ Day in mind, this month Mark Woolley takes a look at a common male hair problem Realising that you are losing your hair can be one of the scariest moments in a man’s life, since hair plays such a huge role in defining personal image. With around 50% of us thinning out before we’re 50 years old, that’s certainly a lot of men who will be affected, and who will be desperately on the lookout for a solution to minimise or even reverse the problem. It has been well Ryan Giggs documented that even wellknown personalities succumb to the problem with the likes of Jude Law (aged 37), Ryan Giggs (aged 36) and Prince William (aged 27) being regularly analysed by the press! (All pictured). Androgenic alopecia (male pattern hair loss) is a genetic affliction which is passed down through either your mother’s or father’s genes and affects men who are sensitive to a hormone produced by the body called Dihydrotestosterone. This hormone gradually shrinks the hair follicles over the top of the scalp leading to the classic hair loss pattern known as Male Pattern Hair Loss. Whilst you may be feeling uneasy at the prospect of losing some hair, bear in mind that it can often be a very long, drawn out process and you might not lose as much hair as you think. In fact, for many men, it’s not until their older years that the hair loss accelerates and becomes noticeable to others. With half of the male population experiencing some hair loss, you will also find that other people will not notice it in the same way that you do. What seems like huge hair loss to you, will not even be noticed by others. In the meantime, using specially formulated strengthening shampoos and conditioners can rebuild and strengthen the hair follicles to help give you back some of the thickness. Redken Thickening Lotion (£8.95) which contains bodifying proteins to reconstruct and strengthen hair follicles, should be applied evenly through damp hair and blow dried to boost volume. Alternatively, apply to wet hair before rinsing, Kérastase Bain Prevention (£12.50), specifically effective for tackling hair loss, as it stimulates the scalp and promotes the absorption of proteins to boost hair thickness.

LETTER OF THE MONTH I’m approaching 37 years old and have noticed that my hair is starting to thin at the crown. What can I do to minimise it or make it less noticeable? The most important thing you can do is keep your hair short and neat. This will make your hair appear much thicker and healthier and will help disguise your hair loss. Don’t try to keep your hair longer in the thinning areas as this will only draw attention to the problem, so combover’s are a no-no! Do talk to your hairdresser about it, as they may be able to recommend hair products that could minimise the issue. Electric Hair Brighton have expert hairdressers who can consult and give advice on suitable haircuts and hair maintenance as well as salon quality hair care products to help make the prospect of hair loss less daunting. While most men are entirely satisfied by the result of a good haircut, there are also a number of treatments available although some of the clinically proven hair loss treatments are fairly expensive and range from topical ointments (Minoxidil) to daily tablets (Propecia) through to hair transplants. At the time of writing, there are only a handful of drugs on the market which can effectively stop hair loss and in some cases bring back lost hair. Due to possible side effects, some treatments should only be used following a consultation with a GP, Trichologist or Dermatologist.

ABSOLUTE HEALTH

Locks
Look after your crowning glory says our health expert Sheryl Waters
D
o you ever notice how people with curly hair want straight hair and people with straight hair want curly hair? We all have to live a long time with our hair, and most of us would like to try something different. But for better or for worse, we have to live with our hair ‘til death do us part. Therefore, we need to look after it! When hair starts thinning or falling out, it can be stressful since when push comes to shove, we are all a little attached to our locks. Of course there is a huge amount of genetic determination, but we can make choices that make the most of what we have. Certain foods encourage shiny, healthy hair because they contain vital nutrients. Alfalfa Sprouts Alfalfa sprouts are a good source of vitamins A, B2, B5, C and K. Alfalfa sprouts contain phytochemicals and folic acid. In addition, the sprouts contain trace elements such as zinc, copper and magnesium, all necessary for strong hair and a healthy scalp. The best part is that you can grow these lock promoters yourself. Measure 3 tablespoons of alfalfa seeds, rinse under cold water and drain. Place the seeds into the bottom of a wide necked glass jar. Add cool, pure water to the jar so it covers the seeds. Allow the seeds to soak overnight. In the morning, attach a piece of cheesecloth over the jar opening with a rubber band. Strain the water through the cloth. Ensure that all the water is out or it may cause the seeds to rot. Do not remove the seeds from the container. Rinse the seeds and jar every day with pure water. After 5 days or so, sprouts should be ready to eat. They can be added to salads, sandwiches or stir fried with vegetables. Vegetables Leafy green vegetables, such as spinach and kale provide iron and calcium, as well as Vitamin A
34
and C. These vitamins assist in the production of sebum, which conditions the hair and promotes hair growth. Carrots also provide vitamin A. Good for vision as well as hair, these vegetables will encourage follicles to increase their production. Eat them raw too if you can, since raw vegetables generally offer the greatest amount of nourishment.
“Chinese medicinal herb He Shou Wu has been used for centuries to treat hair loss” Wheat Germ Wheat germ is a part of the wheat kernel. Wheat germ is very high in protein, potassium, calcium, zinc, thiamine, niacin and vitamins that are necessary in order to maintain healthy hair and skin. Foods to Avoid Dead foods such as white sugar, processed wheat, hydrogenated oils and toxic flavorings can create dead hair. Cut down on excess caffeine and alcohol since they can stunt growth. Herbs Thinning hair, or alopecia, is a condition that is caused by aging and also genetics. Many herbs have been used to stimulate hair growth for thousands of years. Taken internally or applied to the scalp, herbs are a gentle and natural way to prevent hair loss and stimulate hair growth. Chinese medicinal herb He Shou Wu has been used for centuries to treat hair loss. Recently, the American Botanical Council reported that this
herb may be useful to restore color to graying hair, as well as stimulate hair growth. Ginseng is another Chinese herb good for hair growth. It is an adaptogen, which means it helps the body adapt to stress, which is known to be a cause of hair loss. Ginseng is often found in shampoos as well as tinctures that can be taken internally. Lavender oils can also be applied to the hair and massaged into the scalp because it draws the blood to the scalp, which helps prevent hair loss. Thorn Apple, also known as Jimsonweed has been shown to help hair growth too. Used in Chinese herbal medicine for thousands of years to treat digestive disorders and even tuberculosis, Thorn Apple contains toxins known as scopolamine and hyoscyamine that can stimulate hair growth and stave off other illnesses. Angelica Known as Dong Quai in Chinese medicine, the herb Angelica is also used to stop hair loss. The active ingredient is an herbal form of a testosterone stimulant, called a phytotestosterone. The gel from the Aloe Vera plant soothes skin and acts as an anti-inflammatory when applied externally. By massaging the gel into the scalp, the pH balance of the scalp is restored and this helps to get hair growing again. Aloe also helps the hair retain water, and since one quarter of the hair is made up of water, this important function of Aloe Vera enables hair to remain nourished. So the fact is that whatever your hair is like, you are hopefully stuck with your it for the rest of your life if you give it the right care and attention. So choosing foods and products that keep it healthy is a smart move. Remember that what goes on the skin goes into the blood, so it is always worth investigating in the most natural, chemical free shampoos and hair products too… because you are of course WORTH IT!

FESTIVAL FABULOUS! The Alternative guide to festival beauty survival. Whatever your style, festival glamour needs to be quick, effective and foolproof, but most of all, it needs to withstand sleepless nights and hungover mornings, not to mention the possible absence of a hot shower! Whether you are a high flyer or boutique camper, herbal hippy, rock chic or a glittering flower fairy, a few useful tips and a little help from some clever beauty essentials, will see you well on your way to looking and feeling festival fabulous! Before you go Have your eyelashes tinted, you’ll save space in your makeup bag and also precious time getting ready. To ensure that you don’t have a reaction, insist on a skin test beforehand. Pop along to your local beauty counter and pick up a few samples of your favourite lotions, potions and perfume, make sure to include sachets of sunblock too. These are ideal to have handy during the day, and are disposable. Avoid the horror of grimy looking nails by painting them in one of this season’s fabulous colours. For long-lasting and smooth looking nail polish, apply a layer of ridge filler or top coat in between.
BAG THE BASICS Travel light by packing make-up products that can be used in more ways than one - multi-tasking products that can be used on the eyes, lips, cheeks and body. Iridescent and glittery eyeshadow looks great in the sunlight and can be swiped on with just a finger. By applying with a damp brush, you can also use it as eyeliner too, making it easier to apply, longer-lasting and the colour will appear more intense - just perfect for festival nighttime. Choose an eyeliner and a lipliner that come in a retractable pen – no sharpener needed! Why not ditch the mascara and eyelash curlers altogether in favour of some funky reusable fake eyelashes. These are already curled, there are stacks to choose from
and they can stay on for three days if used with waterproof lash adhesive! Leave the bling at home in the safe, and opt for beautiful jewels like bindis to adorn the forehead and around the eyes. Bindis are reusable self-adhesive gems that add instant sparkle and glamour. Try temporary tattoos (think Chanel - jewellery or pretty butterflies and flowers). Even henna can be a fabulous and safe way to adorn the skin and will stay put for the duration! And finally - a small tube of body glitter, your favorite lip balm and a pack of make-up remover all-in-one wipes!

ABSOLUTE LIFE COACHING The Voice of Reason by Terrina Clifton-Moore and Georgina Paget Absolute Brighton Coaching “Hi Georgina and Terrina. I have been stuck in the same job for 18 years. I work as a receptionist in a doctor’s surgery. I don’t have children, my husband is in a very good job as a bank manager and we are happy in our relationship. We only have a small mortgage. I feel stuck in a rut. I am 44 years old. I would like more but I don’t know more of what?” Pauline, Shoreham Dear Pauline Why not consider raising your game? In a Government survey 57% of people given the opportunity to change history said they would have changed the career path they took! Try doing this simple exercise on your own and jot down the answers… 1. Ask yourself where do you see yourself in 5 years time? 2. Now proceed to 10 years...
Raise your game 3. Are you still working as a doctor’s receptionist? 4. Are you happy? 5. Are you fulfilled? 6. Are you motivated? Firstly, remember success is a journey not a destination – in other words you need to take the first step to changing and altering your future. Sometimes the first step is the hardest but you grow and develop from that experience. Secondly, do you have a wish list? Possibly an interest or hobby you have always wanted to spend more time over? What are your areas of core competence? How would you feel about retraining? People swap lanes in life far more easily than ever before. It can be healthy and productive to get out of your comfort zone of the same job after 18 years. Specific strategies for change are taking the first step and raising your game.
“
Why not try some life coaching? The object of it is to enable people to achieve dreams. It is not unreasonable to have high expectations in life and raise your game. Call Georgina or Terrina on 07912 206483. Absolute Brighton Coaching www.absolutebrightonlifecoaching.co.uk

ABSOLUTE DENTAL COLUMN
DRY MOUTH SYNDROME What is DMS? Sandy Bone, dental hygienist at Marina Dentalcare, discusses this uncomfortable condition
X
erostomia is the professional word for what is also known as Dry Mouth Syndrome (DMS). DMS is the Cinderella of general practice dentistry. It is not often talked about, rarely recognised and generally ignored. More often than not the patient will assume that taking water to bed is something that happens as you get older - it is part of the normal process of aging. It isn’t. It is more likely to be a side effect of medication prescribed for some other apparently unrelated condition. In its mildest form, it will be such a small change that the patient may not even notice. In its most severe form, it is a condition that will rob the patient of their teeth, their ability to talk (and thus socialise), their ability to digest food properly ultimately preventing them from leading a normal comfortable life. How long does it last? A dry mouth can be temporary or permanent. The temporary dryness that is associated with a hot date or a wedding speech is psychosomatic and will resolve as soon as the event is over. If this is the case, then some sugar-free chewing gum should sort you out. This type of dryness requires no input from the dental profession. However, DMS can be of a more enduring nature and in some circumstances permanent. The permanent drying-up of saliva is usually associated with injury or surgery of some kind. Saliva is produced by glands in the cheek, chin and neck areas. Early treatments of cancer using radiotherapy in those areas would often result in the total destruction of these glands resulting in the patient suffering from a permanent extra disability. Today, realising the enormous problems that this causes, treatments are very much more sophisticated and accurate which results in these glands being protected from the radiation, and thus the patient is able to function when treatment is over. The enormous uplift in wellbeing that this produces is second only to the continuing ability of the mouth to function in the way that is needed. Is saliva important? We are social animals and without any saliva many
social aspects of life fall apart because saliva is one of the most complicated fluids in our body. It is not just spit, useful for licking stamps and putting on tissues to clean protesting children’s faces! Obviously it lubricates the mouth and tongue which allows comfortable, effective speech and eating. But it is also a vital part of the taste function, (Dysgeusia – just in case you wanted the Latin), the swallowing function, (Dysphagia - always a good one to impress your friends with) and is an active part of the immune system by helping to prevent Gingivitis/ Periodontitis, and Caries (sounds better than decay, don’t you think?) So it follows that saliva is also antibacterial. Losing any of these functions completely is fortunately very rare - usually what happens is that the saliva becomes of poorer quality, and therefore very inefficient. This in itself is a problem, as patients are not always aware that something has changed - they just become aware at a much later stage that other problems are occurring in their mouth.
“The temporary dryness that is associated with a hot date or a wedding speech is psychosomatic and will resolve as soon as the event is over.” What can help? So what can be done to help? Primarily it is important to discover why your saliva has changed. It may be a symptom of another problem as there are various conditions that have DMS as a secondary symptom e.g. Rheumatoid Arthritis. So checking out with your GP is always wise. Is it the result of medication? The list of medications that can cause these problems is huge. Drugs for high blood pressure are notoriously a culprit. As are drugs for depression, but it could just be the very commonly used Ibubrufen. If that is the case, it would be a good idea to prevent oral problems developing by discussing it with your GP. It may be that another medication could be tried, as everyone’s reaction to
medication is different and a change to another drug may be all that is needed to improve the situation. There are also various ranges of therapies that can be tried at home that will relieve the symptoms. Using a DMS system of mouth care products usually provides a marked improvement. These consist of a toothpaste, a rinse, a gel, and chewing gum or pastilles to suck. The reason that they are so effective is that firstly they do not contain the aggravating factors that normal mouth care products do, e.g. Sodium Laurel Sulphate, strong flavourings or alcohol, and secondly, they do contain ingredients that will actively replace the things that are depleted or missing altogether in the DMS saliva. For instance, enzymes that become depleted are replaced. The two market leaders of these ranges are BioXtra and Biotene. If you try them, do not use normal oral care products alongside them as they are not compatible, and thus you will not get the therapeutic effects that you have paid for. Recently another range of products has been launced into the UK market, called Xerostome. This range uses a different system of therapeutic agents to give relief, including Betaine, and Xylitol. What if this doesn’t help? If no relief can be obtained by any of these suggestions there is evidence that acupuncture works well. Denture wearers can suffer more than others as the gum is unable to tolerate the denture. This too can be alleviated by using the gel component of the systems mentioned above. Place the gel inside the denture before use, and this will lubricate and help to protect the delicate tissues that are under stress. Finally, this is a condition that is often overlooked but simple things can help to alleviate it. If you think that this is something that you would like to talk to someone about I am more than happy to assist in any way that I can at Marina Dentalcare and just to make sure that you get the best help that we can give you, I promise not to use any Latin words! ABSOLUTE TRAVEL Dancing the Haka on Ua Pou Island
The land of men
Neil Geraghty gets away from it all on the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia
T
he Marquesas Islands or Henua Enana, Land of Men were once feared throughout the Pacific for their tattoo covered warriors but were not exactly living up to their manly reputation. I was sitting in a café on Hiva Oa with Joel, our wonderfully camp waiter from the cargo freighter Aranui deep in conversation about supermodels. “Kate Mouse… she Eeenglish I tink”, said Joel “Moss”, I replied correcting his pronunciation. “Moose, Moose”, said Joel puckering his lips to get the sound right, “I love Kate Moose, but who is she American, I see her on American supermodel TV?” “Tyra Banks”, I chipped in betraying an unhealthy interest in America’s Next Top Model. “Yes. Wanna be on top”, Joel sang sashaying his shoulders to the theme tune and doing a very convincing imitation of Tyra. Joel was himself a strapping Marquesan lad but also part of the large Mahu community that can be found all over Polynesia. In traditional society, effeminate boys were raised as girls to perform traditional female roles later in life. In the absence of the men folk who were often absent fishing or at war, their extra strength came in very useful for the more arduous domestic chores and their artistic and musical abilities were highly valued. Today, the performing arts are full of Mahu artists and in the hospitality industry are renowned for offering the highest levels of service in the Pacific Islands. Joel was no exception. There’s always an awkward atmosphere when you first join a cruise ship and the passengers waiting for the dining room door to open for our welcome lunch were standing in standoffish 44
silence. With a rattling key, the door slowly opened to reveal a beaming Joel dressed in a pink Hawaiian shirt and straw boater festooned with matching pink hibiscus flowers. He instantly won the hearts of the entire ship and at each meal time would open the door to thunderous applause and flashing cameras, twirl around in a new colour coordinated outfit while pointing to himself and feigning surprise in true Hollywood starlet fashion. The Aranui is legendary in French Polynesia and is the life blood of the Marquesas Islands, the most remote and arguably the most beautiful archipelago in the world. Fifteen times a year, this sturdy cargo freighter heroically navigates some of the toughest seas in the Pacific and is the sole source of supplies for the lesser islands. The stern of the ship has been adapted into a comfortable floating hotel full of old time South Seas charm. For the more intrepid traveller it offers a unique opportunity to experience the stunning landscapes and culture of the Marquesas which, bearing in mind the almost non-existent sea and air communications that exist between islands, is almost impossible to achieve any other way. French Polynesia covers an area the size of Europe and it takes 3 days sailing to reach The Marquesas from Papeete, the tiny bustling capital ‘city’ on Tahiti Island. On the third day we arrived at the magically beautiful island of Ua Pou whose skyline of basalt Phallic shaped mountains is typical of the contorted volcanic landscapes of the Marquesas. Following breakfast, during which I almost choked to death on an omelette after a student waitress whacked me with her hips while dancing a spirited hula around the tables, we went ashore for a song and dance display staged by the villagers of Hakehau. The gentle undulating movements of the

islanders covered from head to toe in tattoos including lips and ears but when conservative Catholic missionaries arrived on the islands they banned the tradition” girls were mesmerising but, in common with the other islands we visited, were only a prelude to the guys who with skimpy pareus (sarongs), grass leggings and immaculate early 90s boy band blond highlights were straining at the leash to perform the Haka war dance. The next 15 minutes of grunting, chest beating, thigh slapping and lunging at the audience made the All Blacks look like a bunch of Strictly Come Dancing contestants and had the sizeable contingent of elegant retired French ladies dressed in floaty linen squealing with delight. The Aranui visits all six of the inhabited Marquesan Islands and its sedate itinerary gives you ample time to enjoy breathtaking hikes and trips to mysterious archaeological sites guided by guest lecturers. More adventurous passengers can book optional deep sea dives to waters teeming with hammerhead sharks, horse riding excursions on sturdy chestnut brown Chilean horses and even arrange to have a tattoo done. One of the first things you notice in The Marquesas is the exquisite swirling tattoos. These range from goggle-eyed tiki (ancestral spirits) to stylised manta rays representing protection at sea and freedom. The artistry and workmanship of Marquesan tattoo artists are world famous but it’s an art form that only recently came back from the brink of extinction. Early 19th Century engravings depict islanders covered from head to toe in tattoos including lips and ears but when conservative Catholic missionaries arrived on the islands they banned the tradition. By the time Gauguin arrived in Hiva Oa in 1897, Marquesan culture had all but vanished and his paintings of languid island life are noticeably tattoo free. It was only in 1986 that the church lifted the ban sparking a revival in Marquesan tattooing that has spread like wildfire throughout the Pacific. Felix and Edwin Fii, brothers on the verdant island of Tahuata are 2 of the most renowned tattoo artists in French Polynesia and are also master bone carvers producing exquisite shark bone pendants covered in intricate nautical motifs. It’s worth remembering if you do decide on a tattoo that you won’t be able to go swimming for a couple of weeks as the salt water will affect the scarring process. If you’re planning a few days snorkeling in one of French Polynesia’s legendary lagoons you can leave the tattoo until you return to Papeete where you’ll find several acclaimed Marquesan tattoo artists upstairs in the Marché de Papeete. However enjoyable it might be visiting these remote islands on board The Aranui, you can’t really fully appreciate Polynesian island life without actually staying on an island. En route back to Papeete, The Aranui passes through the Tuamotus, the largest atoll chain in the world and makes its final port of call at Rangiroa described by Jacques Cousteau as the most beautiful lagoon in the world. The cold seas surrounding the Marquesas have prevented any extensive coral growth and the islands lack the spectacular reef life that Polynesia is world famous for. The Tuamotus on the other hand are home to countless pristine coral lagoons where you can enjoy some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving on the planet. One of the most enjoyable ways to experience the Tuamotus is to stay at a family run pension and the Tevahine Dream in Rangiroa is one of

Guests are always welcome to join him and his charming sons on his daily fishing trips and each day he’d drop me off on an isolated reef where I’d drift along in the slow moving current swimming amongst shoals of butterfly fish with the odd manta ray floating serenely by. An hour or so later he’d pick me up and laden with fish we’d return to the guest house to prepare the evening’s barbeque. There, sitting under a blaze of stars listening to chirping geckos and the gentle lapping of the lagoon it was easy to slip into the languid Pacific Life of Riley immortalized by Gauguin a hundred years ago and still going strong today.

ABSOLUTE RECIPE
STEAK OUT Most dads love their steak! Cooked simply, or dressed up, treat yours this Fathers’ Day
Dad’s minute steak with golden onions Ingredients 5 tbsp red wine 2 tbsp soy sauce 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 1 tsp light muscovado sugar 450g minute or sandwich steaks , cut into strips 1 tbsp olive oil 1 large onion, thinly sliced 4 thick slices of bread (choose dad’s favourite, either white or brown) 50g garlic butter watercress to serve Method 1. Mix the wine, soy sauce, mustard and sugar in a big bowl. Toss in the steak strips, season well with pepper and leave to sit and soak while you get everything else ready. 2. Pour the oil into a large frying pan and heat it up for a minute or so.
3. Tip in the onion slices, turn the heat up to very high and cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring often to get the onions really golden brown. Take the onions out and keep them warm. 4. Lift the steak strips out of the marinade with a slotted spoon and stir fry them in the onion pan over a very high heat for 30 seconds (do it in two batches if it’s easier). 5. Pour in the marinade from the bowl and boil for a few seconds until it sticks to the meat but is still juicy. Season with salt and pepper and keep warm. 6. Toast the bread and then spread with the garlic butter and cut each slice in half. 7. Overlap two pieces of toast on each plate, top with a spoonful of onions, then the steak and more onions. Put a little pile of watercress on each plate and serve straightaway.
FULL FLAVORED STEAK Ingredients 4 (15 oz) porterhouse steaks (different steak can be used) 2 1/2 tbsp brown sugar 1 1/2 tbsp sugar 1 tbsp ginger, ground 1 garlic clove, crushed 1/2 c soy sauce 1 tbsp tarragon vinegar
50
Method Combine the sugars, garlic, soy sauce, and vinegar. Put meat into a large shallow dish and pour soy sauce mix over meat. Allow to marinate at least 30 minutes, turning once or twice. Place on grill when ready, reserving marinade. Grill steak, brushing with marinade until done. Serve immediately.
Sirloin steak with peppercorn sauce and chips Ingredients 4 x 200g/7oz thick-cut sirloin steaks, preferably aged for 28 days 2 tbsp vegetable oil salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 tbsp butter For the peppercorn sauce 100ml/3½fl oz brandy 100ml/3½fl oz hot beef stock 1 tbsp green peppercorns (from a jar, in brine), drained 300ml/10½fl oz double cream 2 salted anchovy fillets, very finely chopped chips and lightly dressed green salad, to serve Method 1. Brush the sirloin steaks all over with the vegetable oil. Season, to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 2. Heat a large frying pan over a high heat until smoking. Add the steaks (two at a time if necessary) and fry for two minutes on each side (for medium rare), or until cooked to your liking, placing a knob of butter on top of each steak once it has been turned over. Remove from the pan and set aside to rest on a warm plate. Repeat the process with any remaining steaks. 3. For the peppercorn sauce, add the brandy to the pan the steaks were cooked in to deglaze the pan, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan using a wooden spoon. 4. Add the beef stock, drained green peppercorns and anchovies. Stir well and bring the mixture to a simmer. Simmer until the volume of liquid has reduced by half. 5. Add the cream, stir well and continue to simmer until the mixture has thickened to a sauce consistency. 6. To serve, place one steak onto each of four serving plates. Drizzle over the peppercorn sauce. Spoon a portion of chips alongside and garnish with a little of the dressed green salad.

ABSOLUTE RESTAURANT REVIEW
ORIENTAL TREAT Mo Hunter-Shine enjoys the original all-you-can-eat style of dining at Gekko
G
ekko (formerly Wokmania) takes a commanding presence on West Street, just up from the Kingswest complex, and my sister, Cath, and I paid an early evening visit recently. As its outside appearance suggests, it is a spacious restaurant, but is cosy and inviting when inside. The comfortable seating is well spaced out, enabling many people to dine easily. The set up is all you can eat from a tempting and generous buffet, and our waiter explained how it worked. The buffet is laid out along the side of the dining area, and all the dishes are well-marked, (vegetarian dishes were indicated). Oriental buffets first appeared in the 1970s, and have now become popular again. As we gradually come out of the recession, it is refreshing to know that you can get as much good quality food as you can eat, at a very reasonable price. What’s available depends on the time of day. At lunchtime, you can choose from sushi, Chinese, Texmex, Thai, pizza, pasta and from the bakery and patisserie desserts, all for £6.99. From 6.30pm onwards, you can also choose from the Indian selection, and separate counters provide noodles, stirfry, and Tandoori freshly prepared to order. All this for £12.99. Happy hour is between 4.30 and 6.30, and for £9.99, you can choose from most of the dishes available later, with the exception of some of the Indian meat dishes. On Sunday, the evening menu runs all day for £9.99. Children under ten can eat for just £2.99, and there is a 25% discount on all food for the over 60s, and students.
52
Twenty experienced chefs work hard at Gekko to keep the food and the flavours flowing. There are over 250 dishes on offer. We found the food hot, tasty and satisfying, and the Indian Chicken Balti went really well with the Mexican three bean salad! Cath’s plate included Chicken satay, Asian pumpkin curry, Lamb Nawabi. Anything seems to go with anything, which is probably the secret of a successful oriental buffet. As Gekko is so well placed at the bottom of West Street, it is an ideal place to stop at after work, or on the way out on the town. Great value for money - you even get refills on your soft drinks. Best advice: go hungry and enjoy! You will certainly get your money’s worth. Gekko Buffet, Bar and Grill, 65-75 West Street, Brighton 01273 746294 www.lovegekko.com

Apartment living Living in an apartment is the preferred choice for many living in towns these days. Lower outgoings, less cleaning and heating bills, and less space to 'spread' can all be conducive to a better quality of life
M
any people are now choosing to live in a flat or apartment, as opposed to having the responsibilities associated with owning a house. It’s not to everyone’s choosing, and is probably easier for couples or singles to live an apartment life, but it is a good way to keep your life contained and in control. Apartment living is of course associated with towns and built up areas, where space is more limited. Most people who live in a town or city probably live this way.
In a good building with responsible maintenance facilities, and considerate neighbours, you can share the upkeep of any communal areas inside and out. Many more exclusive blocks have facilities for residents, such as a gym, swimming pool, garden areas etc. If you are a keen gardener, a flat or apartment may not be very appealing. However, many places have either a communal area, which is usually kept up by the maintenance agents, or each flat has its own allocated plot, which is best, of course, for those with green fingers.
Leasehold Property Many flats are leassehold: What does this mean? If you buy a leasehold property you are actually buying the rights to live in a property for a set period of time. You won’t actually own the property, or the grounds it
EXPLORE LIVING UNVEILS GRAND OCEAN’S JEWEL IN THE CROWN – THE SKYLINE APARTMENT
is situated on. Where most flats are leasehold, this type of lease means you are obligated to pay ground rent to the freeholder. The ground rent will cover the costs for communal maintenance repairs. The lease should stipulate how the service charge is worked out, and how it is divided between the other leaseholders. It’s important to calculate all these costs before committing to a leasehold property, as you may not have budgeted for the additional costs. Once the set period in the lease expires, the ownership of the property is given back to the land owner. Most leases are roughly 99 years. However, you can get an extension. Why do people get leasehold properties? Well, because most flats are leasehold, and it means everyone living with in the same building has to split maintenance costs in respect of the common parts of the building and the communal areas. Commonhold Property Commonhold is a relatively new idea; it was introduced at the end of 2004. Again, like leasehold, this type of property is usually found with flats and units. Most strikingly, commonhold eradicates the concept of a lease and having a landlord. That’s what most appeals to buyers, and why it is favoured over leasehold. Commonhold is pretty self-explanatory. A group of people mutually own, for example, a block of flats. There is no overall landlord. However, there is a freehold owner, and that is a company called a commonhold association. The owner of each flat is a member of the association (i.e if you buy a commonhold flat, you will be part of the association). The commonhold association is responsible for maintaining the communal areas of the building. The advantages of commonhold are as follows: there is no set period of time to when you have to leave. All decisions regarding the building are made jointly by the property owners. There will be a standardisation of documentation which is the same throughout all commonhold properties. There will be no input from a landlord. And what appeals to people the most is that with commonhold, the property won’t lose value, unlike with leasehold properties that lose value as the period of the lease gets closer to its expiry date. Leaseholders can convert to commonhold, but every leaseholder will have to buy the freehold together, and everyone in the building must agree to convert to commonhold. 56

The No 10 effect Ben Cannon, from Lanes Lettings in Brighton, discusses the affect the new Government could have on the letting market
W
elcome back! This month (and what a month it’s been), I will be looking at the fallout from the General Election, and how the current political situation will affect you as a landlord. I will also be looking at a recent case study brought to my attention by one of the attendees of The Lanes Lettings Wednesday surgery. These surgeries are proving to be a great source of information for those attending; we are considering extending these to Thursdays too. Letting made easy In my last Wednesday surgery, a landlord who had been recommended to me through a tenant came in to see me. He had a property on with another agent but things were pretty stagnant, and didn’t seem to be getting anywhere. The agent kept saying they had a tenant, but then kept moving the date of when he was going to move in. He kept adjusting the date further and further back until in the end, the tenant didn’t move in at all. The agent had blamed the time it takes to secure references and conduct credit checks - he was outsourcing this function to another company. I could see this was going to be a real problem and luckily managed to assure the landlord that we do all the checks and reference referrals online and in-house, and he could avoid these rather tedious delays. We quickly gained the landlord’s trust, and managed to let his property in the afternoon of the day we met. He has subsequently put the bad experience with the other agent behind him, and we are now looking to manage two other properties that he has in his portfolio. Nowadays, references can be done online, any credit scoring is also done electronically, and a rent guarantee can be confirmed instantly. As soon as the first month’s rent hit our account it was transferred straight into the landlord’s account,
B0610_059 Lanes Letting JUNE.ind1 1
proving to him that letting his property can be easy, and with a minimum amount of stress. A political move With the political situation now resolved, and with all parties loving each other so intensely (well two out of three isn’t bad), it appears we have the makings of a secure government. The Bank of England must be fairly happy, as they have kept interest rates low, and with the economy and the weather appearing to warm up we seem to all be in a post-election state of mild euphoria. OK there may be cuts in just about every public service available, but at least with property there will always be someone wanting to rent it from you. Can you help us with our charity? One other thing I would like to talk about is charity. We at Lanes Lettings are avid supporters of the rocking-horse appeal and will be hosting charity events throughout the year, and would like to invite you to send in some ideas of things that we can do to raise money for them. Please feel free to email me with your suggestions, and we will mention you in next month’s edition. Finally, do you know someone who has a property to rent out? Recommend them to us and once we let and have received the first months rent we will send you a £50 high street voucher of your choice to say thank you.

Hope springs Spring optimism helps lift the housing market despite election uncertainty, according to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) April UK Housing Market Survey
S
entiment rebounded in April helped by the better weather with surveyors expecting a post election bounce, says RICS UK Housing Market survey published in May. Across the UK, London led the upsurge in positive price sentiment with 55 percent more surveyors reporting a rise, up from 32 percent. Elsewhere, surveyors are still reporting house price rises in every region except for Wales and in Yorkshire and Humberside. Activity is expected to rise over the coming months with many surveyors anticipating a post-election bounce. The London sales expectations net balance rose significantly from negative 13 to positive 39 percent, while the price expectations net balance rose from nine percent to 19 percent. The net balance on newly agreed sales in London jumped from one percent to 45 percent. This is in tune with the national figures which turned positive for the first time this year. Nationally, 12 percent more surveyors saw vendors agree a sale, up from a negative reading of eight percent in March. Nationally the average number of completed sales rose for the first time in three months to 17.4 percent per surveyor, while the average stock of property on surveyors’ books decreased by six percent on the month to 61 properties per surveyor. This had the effect of raising the sales to stock ratio - a key indicator of future house price inflation - from 25 percent in March to 28 in April. This is the first upward movement of this indicator in 2010. In London new instructions remained at 23 percent while new buyer
enquiries fell from negative four percent to negative 17 percent. Commenting, Amanda Gardiner, RICS London director, said: “For much of 2010, the housing market has been under the shadow of the general election with the gap between supply and demand growing wider as potential house buyers opted to stand on the sidelines awaiting the outcome of the poll. However, the start of spring has seen renewed optimism with the good weather improving sentiment and surveyors expecting an increase in both sales and house prices. The housing market often sees an increase in new instructions in the early part of the year with sales boosted in the spring and this year has been no exception.”

Kipling’s village
Tim Parker visits the village of Rottingdean, where smuggling was rife, and where the famous cricket club still helps to keep a sense of community
A
splendid village. Or is it in danger of becoming yet another suburb of Brighton? Will the remorseless increase of traffic destroy this much loved village? Some days there are mile-long lines of cars and lorries waiting to get into Rottingdean, or just pass through it, and near-stationary traffic gives rise to a toxic atmosphere which can hang around the village for hours. Upon my visit, nobody I spoke to had a workable solution, and the forecast is that the road over the Downs from Falmer to the sea will get busier and busier, as will the South Coast road. Over the past year I have visited many Sussex villages, the last being Henfield, which, although very different from Rottingdean, has the same problem – too much traffic in its high street, and local retailers in decline. And a village needs its local retailers, its pub, its church, post office and community hall to stay alive. In this respect Rottingdean flourishes; but Tesco has opened up in the village and how many of the locals now drive out to Asda to do their shopping? But, I don’t want to be too gloomy. These problems aside, there is still a marvellous community spirit in Rottingdean, with all kinds of thriving local societies and groups. There is the White Way Centre, a famous cricket club (I will say more of that later), football, bowls, tennis, riding, croquet, and then the sea with its ever-changing moods at the bottom of the high street. Rottingdean has always been a sporting village, but many of its sports were not of the kind we would approve of today. It was a centre for prize fights, with bare fist fights regularly staged on Beacon Hill, where the windmill stands. Bear baiting, and in particular cock-fighting, were very popular and
64
there would be big betting on the outcome. In 1758 they were matching cocks at five shillings a battle – quite a sum. Before the advent of the motor car, Rottingdean was a tiny and remote village and few of its inhabitants would travel as far as Brighton. Once a toll-gate stood on the road between Roedean and the village, with a house, barn, cowshed and stable-yard adjoining it, but these have long since fallen into the sea. And, there would, of course, have been fields on either side of that country track but erosion, which continues to this day, has pushed the shoreline to the north. In those days it was not until breasting Beacon Hill that one would glimpse at Rottingdean nestling in a fold in the Downs. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the villagers’ main occupation was agriculture. But Rottingdean was also a haven for smugglers and many of the locals would do a bit of both. And why not – smuggling was relatively well paid. Half of the villagers - from the highest to the lowest were connected in one way or another. The much revered Dr Hooker, who was vicar of the Parish from 1792 to 1838, was certainly an accomplice. Illicit cargoes of wines and French lace were stored in caves in the cliff face and then carried through secret tunnels to the cellars of many of the fine houses on the village green. There were running battles between Customs and Excise men but it seems that for much of the time the smugglers won the day. On one occasion they attacked a strong body of Newhaven customs men, captured them and, having bound and gagged them, carried on with their smuggling.

ABSOLUTE PLACES In 1897 Rottingdean’s most famous resident, Rudyard Kipling, took the lease of The Elms, a grand house at the top of the village green. Here is the marvellous poem he wrote about the smugglers. If you were not involved, you looked the other way.
If you wake at midnight, and hear a horse’s feet, Don’t go drawing back the blind, or looking in the street. Them that asks no questions isn’t told a lie. Watch the wall, my darling, while the Gentlemen go by! Five and twenty ponies, Trotting through the dark – Brandy for the Parson, ’Baccy for the Clerk; Laces for a lady, letters for a spy, And watch the wall, my darling, while the gentlemen go by! If you see the stable-door setting open wide; If you see a tired horse lying down inside; If your mother mends a coat cut about and tore; If the lining’s wet and warm – don’t you ask no more! If you do as you’ve been told, ’likely there’s a chance, You’ll be given a dainty doll, all the way from France, With a cap of Valenciennes, and a velvet hood – A present from the Gentlemen, along ’o being good! Five and twenty ponies, Trotting through the dark – Brandy for the Parson, ’Baccy for the Clerk; Them that asks no questions isn’t told a lieAnd watch the wall, my darling, while the gentlemen go by!

Of course smuggling is now a thing of the past – or is it? Two years ago I was looking at a large boat in Brighton Marina when I suddenly realised I was being surrounded by customs men and women with two sniffer dogs. Arrests have been made, proclaimed The Argus a few days later. In 1960 I arrived in Brighton to start a new job and one of the most sensible things I did that summer was to join Rottingdean Cricket Club, where I was made very welcome. Henry Blyth was Captain and very much in charge. I had previously belonged to a London club and was astonished to be asked if I would consider an annual subscription of £2.50 to be too much, my previous sub had been £15. “Pay me later in the season,” said Henry, “when you can afford it.” There were quite a few eccentrics in the team, including a fast bowler who kicked down his wicket when cross with the umpire. I thought Henry would not tolerate such behaviour but he took me to one side and explained quietly, “he is a very good bowler, Tim, and he can’t help being cross from time to time.” For me, Henry was part of the life and soul of the village; there were others like him and there still are. So, I am sure the village will survive.

Summer fun
Brighton and Hove Council unveil schemes operating across the city this summer, to keep youngsters occupied during the school holidays Holiday playschemes If you’re looking for fun activities for your children, or for childcare, throughout the holidays then a holiday playscheme may well suit yours and your child’s needs. What are they? Holiday playschemes offer activity based days and weeks, mainly for children aged five-11 years but sometimes for younger or older children too. The main focus of playschemes is on ‘play’ and children having fun, but through this they will often learn new things too. A wide variety of playschemes can be found in the city, from community based schemes open for one or two weeks a year for just a few hours a day to larger, privately run schemes open for eight
hours a day and available every school holiday. Local information There are around 30 playschemes in Brighton and Hove and each one is different; some may have a strong arts influence and others may be more sporty. Costs vary greatly, but as a rough guideline you could expect to pay: £18 - £24 for a full day £10 - £15 for a half day session Some schemes offer reductions for full weeks, siblings and people on low income. Details of playschemes and other fun activities in the City are available from the Family Information Service at www.brighton-hove.gov.uk
Parents are most welcome to view. Please contact us for an appointment or to arrange a TASTER DAY.

FIVE ALIVE
The Mercedes ML500 is a big hitter with a big reputation. But does it live up to the hype?
D
on’t you just love those lists in the Sunday supplements that inform you that those products you never even realised had come ‘in’ are now completely passé? If that is indeed the case, then the Mercedes ML500, a car that most would see as a pretty hot ticket, must be about as ‘over’ as it comes. Drive one and you probably won’t care if it’s in, out or shaking it all about, because the luxury 4x4s don’t come a lot better than the ML500! It may be big and clever but for most of us, the ML500 isn’t hugely relevant. ‘Normal’ folks will buy the £39,000 ML 300CDI diesel while the super wealthy will prefer the awe-inspiring 510bhp ML63AMG version. The ML500 is a compromise. It’s a super refined, beautifully finished all-wheel drive smoothie that’ll leave you with enough change for a half decent meal out from £50,000. Two versions are offered, both saddled with identical price tags. Customers choose from a well appointed SE version or a more focused Sport model. Both are very appealing but it’s worth framing the ML500 in terms of its direct competition. Being perched near the top of the M-Class range prices the big Mercedes is out of reach of the likes of the Volvo XC90 and the Jeep Commander and into direct comparison with the Porsche Cayenne S, the BMW X5 4.8, the Range Rover 4.2 and the Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI, vehicles with power outputs of 385, 350, 390 and 309bhp respectively. The Mercedes manages 302bhp, so it can’t lever the power advantage usually associated with the three-pointed star. To do that, you need to pay a whole lot more money for the AMG touch. It goes like one too. Sixty mph from standstill
is dispatched in just 6.9 seconds en route to a top speed pegged at 146mph. Try matching that in any of the aforementioned rivals. It isn’t going to happen. Suddenly you twig that in offering the quickest car with the lowest power output, Mercedes might have stolen a march on the opposition. A kerb weight of 2,100kg helps to explain things. That’s fully 380kg less than a Range Rover and also helps lend the Mercedes an agility and deftness of touch that the more tank-like 4x4s can’t hope to hold a candle to.
“The value proposition is straightforward. The ML500 is quicker, more economical, more versatile and better equipped than any directly comparable rival” The benefits of advanced construction mean the ML500 is able to offer supreme build quality without weighing as much as a Federal Reserve bank vault. This has repercussions in terms of fuel economy too. Drive the M-Class in a halfway sensible fashion on open road and you’ll achieve 27.2mpg. Exercise similar restraint in the diesel Touareg and you’ll only get 28.8mpg – and that’s not exactly a case of comparing eggs with eggs. In the Porsche 25.2mpg. Now you’re beginning to see the measure of Mercedes’ achievement with this model. Drive is transmitted to bitumen via a sevenspeed automatic. Stay with us, here because the automatic is no ordinary slushbox. It’s got more in its locker than mere wafting, and with seven ratios to blur between, you’re always plugged right into the meat of the torque
curve. The exterior of the ML500 is, if anything, even better looking. The lines of the old model have worn so well that the current generation M opts for an evolutionary look, keeping the same sporty stance and raked forward C-pillar but adding more pronounced wheelarches and a rising swage line along its flanks that may look a little too Toyota RAV4 for more conservative tastes. The next X5 will have its work cut out to offer styling quite as slick as the M-Class. Although the sharply raked back windscreen and contoured body panelling give the MClass a sporty, compact appearance, the tape measure shows just how artful its stylists have been. It’s 150mm longer than its predecessor, 71mm wider and the wheelbase has grown by 95mm. It is also 7mm lower. Aerodynamics have been improved from a CD value of 0.39 to 0.34 with fuel economy savings of as much as ten per cent. With smart engineering, a pair of very attractive trim packages, unparalleled all-round versatility and capability, it quietly emerges as the pick of the 4X4 brigade.

his year will be the BHF’s 20th Heart of Sussex Walk along part of our beautiful South Downs. Hundreds of families over the last two decades have enjoyed their day with the BHF, and most importantly have raised many thousands of pounds for the fight against heart and circulatory disease. Much of the money raised has helped equip our local hospitals, GP surgeries and leisure centre with vital heart monitoring equipment. The walk has been cleverly and imaginatively designed in order to ensure enjoyment for all the family, and their dogs of course. There is a choice of four starting points for different distances, all finishing together in Alfriston. You can choose to walk the full 21 miles from Clayton Windmills or start further along at the 5, 8 or 15 mile start points. Simon Cartwright, Chairman of mid Sussex BHF adds: “We hope you will be able to join us on this year’s walk; it will be particularly special as it will be our 20th consecutive year. Your support provides much needed help for the BHF research programmes, and your donation of time and money enables them to continue their life-saving work.” Come and start your summer with a healthy and fun day with family and friends. or 43 years the South of England Agricultural Society has been celebrating the rural way of life. 2010 promises another blockbuster year, as it throws the spotlight on the best in British agriculture, equestrianism, horticulture, food and drink, country crafts, sports and entertainment. The society has announced the theme for the South of England Show 2010: The Year of the Bee. In recognition of the plight of the humble bee, the Society has decided to adopt the species as the focus for this year’s show. In previous years, cows, pigs and race horses have been highlighted, but the Society has chosen one of the smallest creatures to showcase at the first major event of the new decade. This year the EcoVillage will make its debut at the Show. As a brand new attraction, it will comprise over 100 exhibitors and a
picnic area, sponsored by Riverford Organics, located adjacent to the Foodcourt on Central Avenue. The EcoVillage is designed to showcase exhibitors that offer ethical and sustainable products and services such as renewable energy, green transport and sustainable living. It reflects the Society’s commitment to green issues which includes the placement of Recycle Zone bins for the event, environmentally-friendly toilets, designed to reduce water consumption and make use of rainwater harvesting and its Green Agenda Working Party that is keen to ensure sustainability is at the heart of future developments. DISCOVERING TALENT
Dynamic pairing for Sussex Academy of Music
S
ince opening its doors in November 2008, Sussex Academy of Music (SAM) has gone from strength to strength and its new recording studio has attracted ex Radio 1 DJ and I’m A Celebrity star Mike Read to record his audio book ‘The Songwriter’ at the facilities. Read presented at BBC Radio 1 from 1978 until 1991, and is revered for promoting upcoming bands and live sessions. Alongside his talents in the theatre and as a television presenter, Read has written songs for artists such as Cliff Richard, David Essex and Alvin Stardust and has combined his songwriting and literary talents to create ‘The Songwriter’. The audio book is being produced by David Courtney as a new digital download for Courtney’s company, Whiteroom Music Ltd. The Sussex Academy of Music is home to a wide range of music tuition and is passionate about bringing music to people of all ages. The Academy is run by two young entrepreneurs, Ben Stringer and Rob Biss, school friends whose dedication to create a purpose-built premises for people to discover music, has flourished over the past year, with many announcements imminent. One of these exciting new concepts has arisen through working closely with David Courtney, international songwriter and record producer,
who has worked with legends such as Roger Daultrey, Eric Clapton and Paul McCartney. Songfactor Songfactor is a workshop which will revolutionise songwriting workshops for aspiring talent. In affiliation with the PRS, Performing Rights Society and with a radio show due to start on Brighton’s Juice 107.2 FM, Songfactor will showcase new songwriting talent using SAM’s unique atmosphere to create a dynamic workshop for lyricists and composers. The Sussex Academy of Music will utilise its themed tuition rooms, Live Room and recording studio to create an exciting weekly workshop. The results will be showcased on Brighton’s Juice 107.2 FM and furthermore at regular live showcases, which will be held at a renowned Brighton venue, yet to be announced. Aspiring writers will work together in this building to create songs which could potentially reach the charts, an immensely exciting prospect for both the ‘apprentices’ and putting local talent on the map! Can you help Gus, as he lies fighting for his life in a foreign land
A
young man is fighting for his life thousands of miles from home after being struck down by a mystery illness during the holiday of a lifetime. Gus Golding, 21, has been in a critical condition in hospital in Thailand for over a month now, after suddenly falling ill while on holiday with his girlfriend Natalie Evans. The trip was a 21st birthday present for Gus from Miss Evans. Mr Golding, of Brunswick Road, Hove, started feeling unwell the day after the couple arrived on the Koh Samui island on April 15. After four days of fever and coughing up blood the couple decided he needed urgent medical help. Mr Golding has now been in a medically induced coma in a Bangkok hospital for weeks. Miss Evans, also 21, had to fly home to find the money to pay for his treatment, as their insurance will not cover them because Mr Golding suffers from asthma. To begin with, the medical staff thought he
had pneumonia, now they think it might be a condition called churg strauss vasculitis (COR) which is a disease of the blood that causes the lungs to fail. But until they know what it is, Gus will be kept in the coma. Mr Golding, a student at City College Brighton and Hove, briefly regained consciousness from
his seven-day coma, only to tell his girlfriend that he was terrified about being able to hear everything around him. He said he knew what was going on, but is paralysed and can’t do anything about it. Miss Evans, his sister Coral and family are extremely worried about the medical bills as doctors were flown by private jet to care for Gus. His mother says: “His medical bills so far are running into tens of thousands of pounds, and all we want is for him to be declared fit enough to fly.” Desperate for help paying for his treatment Natalie has set up a bank account so friends and family can help with donations. For more information of how you can help Gus, visit the facebook page ‘Help for Gus’. Gus’ family thank you in advance.
