everything is now slowly getting back to normal (and the news bulletins are once again back on politics - is that a good thing though?) Even our magazine was personally affected by this natural event; in fact, it nearly missed going to print, since I was myself stuck in Egypt. A beautiful place, but work had to be done... our magazine had to go to print. It was ‘interesting’ editing a magazine from so far away, to say the least. However, with the support of my wonderful team working extra hard,

and our patient printers, we muddled through and got there in the end (so to speak - yes, I am now home)! MADE IN ITALY

- the influence of Italian design

LAUNCHES AND LUNCHES

P

eroni Nastro Azzurro, in partnership with the Design Museum, have launched Made In Italy – the influence of Italian design, a series of seminars about the importance of Italian design The seminar in Brighton, on May 12th will take a specific look at “Italian Design on the Road”, revealing the intricate processes behind the design and production of aspirational vehicles and how the combination of the finest materials, passion, perfect craftsmanship and a meticulous attention to detail are force the key values behind Italy’s creative force.

PJ, aka Peter Jarrette Brighton’s favourite socialite, on the pressing life in PR Dear diary

Here we talk to Andrew Nahum from the RCA, one of the speakers at the seminars What are the “Made In Italy – the influence of Italian Design” talks about?” They are a series of seminars about the importance of contemporary Italian design. Italy has a heritage of design excellence and this will be explored throughout these talks. What are the talks focusing on when you come to Brighton? We are interested in the phenomenon of national spirit in design and what made Italian automotive design so distinctive, particularly in the decades following WW2 when the automobile was effectively re-formed. Why is the Italian automobile industry so distinctive? Italy fell in love with the motor car as a country that was industrialising relatively late. In Britain, we could argue that the iconic symbol of industry and mechanisation was steam – a technology with an architectural, stately pace, even when expressed in world-beating locomotives. In Italy, the symbol of the modern world that was arriving by 1900 was the far more urgent, involving and personal automobile. This led to a particularly ‘vivid’ quality in the cars the Italian makers built. What do you think is so special about Italian design? Italy is clearly a culture which pays immense attention to aesthetics and is steeped in a historically-based appreciation of form and balance in art. Many people have argued that this is the underpinning of Italian design excellence. However, I regard this sensibility as part of a continuum which also informed craft work and metalwork. Northern Italy, and Piemonte in particular, was renowned in the 19th century for metalwork and hand-formed products in copper, brass and iron, and this ensured a supply of consummate craftsmen who could work with automotive designers in a seamless way to turn the most exotic and imaginative conceptions into metal. Do you feel it’s important to enlighten people about Italian design, who may not know a huge amount about the design industry? In the post-war period Italy created some of the most exciting, engaging and emotive three-dimensional kinetic sculptures that have ever been devised. I am thinking about the work of stars like Franco Scaglione, ‘Pinin’ Farina, Giorgetto Giugiaro and Marcello Gandini for brands like Ferrari, Fiat, Lamborghini, Lancia and Alfa Romeo. This age now seems remote, but perhaps more importantly, the post-war period was marked by many competing views about what the popular car should look like. Cars from around the world had conflicting, and even bizarre, visual features. In my view the designers of Northern Italy, through their roles in international consultancy, virtually ‘re-invented’ the automobile and helped lead to a global consensus as to what the rational family car should look like today. Made In Italy – Italian Design on the Road, May 12th at 7.15pm The Basement, 24 Kensington Street, Brighton BN1 4AJ Tickets are priced at £10 (£5 Design Museum Members) email tickets@designmuseum.org, or phone 020 7940 8783, or visit www.designmuseum.org/talks Alongside the Brighton talk, there are three London talks, and one in Glasgow – all chaired and curated by Design Museum Director Deyan Sudjic. For further details of each seminar, visit www.peroniitaly.com

The Sun has climbed high in the sky and the days are mercifully longer. Still, these spring days don’t seem long enough to fit in the scores of launches, lunches, parties and PR events. Everyone has been scurrying about, criss-crossing the city by foot, car and cab to make openings and keep dates! “Hi! How are you? Just going? We’re just arriving!”...seems to be the social set’s normal exchange at the moment. It’s as hectic as Heathrow at international rush-hour. A peek at one’s Facebook alone will indicate just how many ‘nights’ are popping up. Scan any room and you’ll see guests texting other invitees still enroute to say “Hurry-up... gr8 canapes!” or “Swerve it! No food! Paybar!” We’re not awful...just busy and we all “appreci8” a heads-up. Here is a heads-up from one busy blue a**** fly: You must try the fabulous and filling food being produced by a star chef, the Australian firecracker EJ, who currently heads the kitchen at The Royal Sovereign Public House on Preston Street and is rumoured to be expanding his culinary expertise to the kitchens at the Atlas Lounge (corner of Norfolk Square and Western Road). EJ invited my wife, Karin, and me along as his guests recently for dinner at the ‘Sov’ and on the strong suggestion of fashionista Natalie Wileman (look out for her column in Absolute next month), we accepted. And aren’t we glad we did. From starters to mains it was magical. With a changing menu, I’m sure he’s serving up the best this spring’s fields, gardens and sea has to offer. It was the turn of Atlas Lounge next as we both strolled in on a night designed to welcome Nick (another Australian) to their team as manager. It was a rammed night with the affable gent and seasoned DJ/recording artist Mr. Pete Haywood entertaining Brightonites like industry heavyweight music producers. We’ve been dropping in to Atlas on unofficial nights too to sip their creative ‘cheesecake’ cocktails (among others) and it’s so grand to have some accomplished cocktail barmen taking up the cocktail cause in such a civilised and grown-up environment. Over in Kemptown, I hobnobbed with more city faces at the new Here Restaurant and caught up with my friend and artist Julie-Anne Gilburt, the exheavyweight boxer Mike Watson and the always smiling and friendly EastEnders actress Carol Harrison as we were watered, wined and tempted by endless trays of scrummies. La Fourchette’s Cocktail Bar threw a party to welcome back their popular barman Boris Pinney who has been away riding horses (or so I garnered from Facebook). Pascal Majoud’s La Fourchette, forever charming, is complimented by their adjacent cocktail bar that also lends a further soupcon of sophistication to Western Road which, by the way I think should be called The Strip at night after 10pm! Alas, there have also been a series of good events of late that I could kick myself for being unable to attend including an open day at Mike Holland’s Engineerium in Hove that everyone was so eager to see, and the relaunch of the refurbished VIP and main rooms at Madame Geisha that co-owner Damian Frizzell invited me to. And no... I received no texts saying ‘swerve them,’ as you see citizens, my socialite-cellphone has been stolen! I told you the nights were getting crowded.

ABSOLUTE INTERVIEW

LAUGHING ALL THE WAY He found fame with cult sitcom Gavin & Stacey, and recently appeared with a host of sports stars for Sports Relief. West Ham fan James Corden talks to Danny Masters about his stardom, getting starstruck, and being funny You’re currently appearing in Sky’s sport quiz, ‘A League Of Their Own’. Have you played a lot of sport in your time? I know I look like a sportsman but the shocking truth is I’ve only ever really played football at school and in kickabouts. And even then I didn’t run about much. Are you more of an armchair fan then? Yeah I’ll watch anything. I recently got into American football and baseball. Baseball in America is absolutely brilliant. A couple of years ago I really got into bowls. I loved it and took a real interest, following the players and everything. The only thing I don’t get is fishing. When they call that a sport, something just doesn’t compute in my head. Were the England football team a tough audience when you did that sketch for Comic Relief? No they were great actually and really responsive. The only difficulty was that we only had 20 minutes with them so time was a big factor. But it’s funny because I’m lucky enough to have met a lot of big names, but footballers are the only people I get starstruck by. I remember meeting Lee Bowyer when he was at West Ham and feeling incredibly shy and nervous.

20

Do you still go to watch West Ham games? I go as much as I can. The weird thing is that the opposition fans are always nice to me so I don’t get abuse!!

turned into something else which is then all over the front and back pages of the newspapers. So they quickly learn to say nothing and then everyone thinks they’re grumpy. But he honestly isn’t and I really warmed to him.

Do you ever see fellow West Ham fan Russell Brand there? Yeah I see him quite a lot. We were thinking about buying a corporate box together but now he’s got a new love in his life, he’s decided to stay in America.

Enough sport talk, will there ever be another episode of Gavin & Stacey? We don’t have any plans to. But who knows, in a few years we might do a special or something but it would have to be really good. The problem is we’ve rounded the story off nicely so I worry about ruining that.

Did you see Katy Perry’s West Ham lingerie she wore at the MTV awards? I did. And before you ask, no, I have not invested in any West Ham pants. I think the club asked if they could borrow the outfit but Russell said it wasn’t in a particularly good state. For Sport Relief, you did a sketch with tennis player Andy Murray. Is he as miserable as he looks? People are amazed when I tell them this but he is one of the nicest, friendliest and funny guys I’ve met. You wouldn’t know that because we’ve almost made our sportsmen and women behave this way because it’s so hard for them to be honest in interviews these days. The minute they say something, it’s taken and twisted and

How long have you been friends with Mat Horne (his Gavin & Stacey co-star)? We didn’t actually know each other before ‘Gavin & Stacey’. I was in New York doing a play while Mat was doing his audition for the show. After he was selected, I rang Mat and we chatted for about an hour. We only talked about the show for six minutes or so, after that we just chatted about football and comedy and discovered we liked the same things. It was vital for the programme that the two characters got on believably and that their friendship felt real so it was great that we got on so well immediately. I would probably say we’re as close now as Gavin and Smithy.

Left: James with his Gavin & Stacey co-stars. Above: With David Beckham for Sports Relief!

What are your favourite comedy shows? The sort of stuff I love - The Royle Family, Seinfeld, Mike Leigh, Alan Bennett – is all about the human condition. So when myself and Ruth wrote Gavin & Stacey, we wanted to follow a similar vein and write about people who hold a mirror up to the world. Ruth lives in Cardiff and I was in Buckinghamshire, so we were both still living in a world we cared about and wanted to write about.

Have you always been funny – even at school? At school I did use to be pre-occupied with making people laugh. My teachers didn’t like teaching me because I was so loud. I found one of my old school reports recently and it said, ‘James’s greatest problem is himself, and I would never want to stem his love of humour or curb that enthusiasm but if he just gave that same level of commitment to work as to trying to make other people laugh he would be a grade-A student.’

Who are your favourite comedians? Richard Prior is my all time favourite. The best stand up comedians in the world don’t have to be funny all the time, they just have to be interesting. He was more interesting than anyone I’ve ever seen. Jerry Seinfeld is also incredible. He’s like a technician in that there isn’t a word that hasn’t been thought about. Not one word is wasted. And I love ‘A League Of Their Own’ panellist John Bishop. I’ve never seen someone control an audience the way he does. He’s going to be absolutely massive over the next year or so.

You seem to be enjoying your fame. But is there a downside?
The main downer is the constant speculation about your life, what you’re up to and with whom. You know it’s going to happen, because you’ve read what people write about other famous people in the paper, but it’s only when it actually happens to you that you think: ‘Oh okay, that’s what it’s like.’ So that side of things can get wearing but on the upside, the public are always an absolute joy to me. Finally, you’ve been seen out with plenty of glamorous women. Who’s the hottest celebrity female on the planet right now? Clare Balding. I’ve got a real thing for her. ABSOLUTE

!” ne go m I’ n he w e m t ou ab lk ta “Don’t The only A-list celebrity column in Sussex Tab’s hunted down by today’s Hollywood He was dubbed ‘the blonde James Dean’ and won the hearts of teenage girls the world over in his day. Now actor Tab Hunter (also a horse enthusiast and singer who knocked Elvis Presley off the charts with Red Sails in the Sunset) is back working in Hollywood, but this time behind the camera with Jim Carey on a remake of Damn Yankees (1958). “I left Hollywood for my horses in Santa Barbara,” says Tab. “I’ve been offered some real hot stuff over the years but didn’t feel the pull, so turned it all down.” Still a fixture on the scene, Tab counts Elizabeth Taylor, Kim Novak and Jane Russell amongst his closest friends. On reports that Liz Taylor is giving up on life, Tab says, “She’s been through hell 100 times over. She’s okay, she’s a survivor.”

Who will be the next Fair Lady An Education star, Carey Mulligan denies rumours she’s up for the lead in the film remake of My Fair Lady. She says: “Right now I’m looking to sleep in my own bed,” after much globe-trotting, making appearances at award ceremonies, adding: “Audrey Hepburn’s shoes are awfully awesome ones to fill, though!” Others tipped to play the role of Eliza Doolittle include Kate Winslett, Sally Hawkins and Keeley Hawkes. As for Dr. Henry Higgins, well rumour also has it, that Hugh Grant is said to be in the running….

Angelina Jolie a wicked witch? Surely not... Reports that Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie is set to play the wicked fairy godmother in a live action remake of ‘Sleeping Beauty’, has surprised some film insiders, as rumour had it Glen Close was to don the black cape and menacing red lips. The film, to be directed by Tim Burton is also said to have attracted Burton stalwart Johnny Depp and Christopher Plummer.

Prepare to be shocked by acting horror Eviscerated bodies? Check. Well endowed chicks? Check. Ultra violence? Check. Heavily modified body of a convicted murderer waiting to be re-animated through the wonders of science? Double check! Yep, all the key components are here. We must be talking about a new flick based upon Mary Shelley’s classic tale! Frankenstein Rising is being talked about in Tinsel town as the ‘best’ and the ‘worst’ horror of the year. This new incarnation of the Frankenstein fable plays on the gothic aspects of the story’s cinema tradition. But more horrifying than guts and gore are the performances; leading the lacklustre bunch is the rotund Randal Film Star Malone, who plays the monster, little known Gary Brandt, former ‘Wizard of Oz’ Lolli-pop guild Munchkin Jerry Maren - now 90, MGM juvenile sensation and star of ‘Little Women’, Margaret O’Brien and the late silent screen star Anita Page as Elizabeth Frankenstein, who was the star of ‘Broadway Melody,’ the first sound film to win an Oscar. If you feel like being scared and want to see just how bad it is, watch the trailer on YouTube.

D & G marvel over Madonna They’ve always been fascinated by Madonna, and now Dolce and Gabbana, who designed 1,500 costumes for The Girlie Show Tour (1993), have hired her for a new range of sunglasses. “Madonna is a legend,” Domenico Dolce told me. “We’ve always admired the way she’s transformed herself”. Gabbana agrees too. He added: “She’s got attitude, determination and beauty. I draw comparisons between Madonna and Marlene (Dietrich) as both had the power to stop traffic – truly sensational!” (Pictured is one of the famous recent D & G adverts starring a very domestic Madonna).

Keep it natural

It is always better to have as much natural light as possible in your home. Even if you don’t have as many windows as you would like, you can still enjoy the benefits of natural lighting

D

aylight breathes life into the interiors of our homes, gives us energy and affects our moods. Some studies indicate we’re more productive and alive when using natural light. So obviously a home with plenty of windows is a healthier happier home. But windows aren’t a practical solution for every room in a building; that does not mean you cannot enjoy the benefits of daylight. Tubular skylights — also called Solatubes, Sun-Domes, Sun Tunnels and various other trademarked names — can be installed in most homes, providing pleasing, natural light and reducing the amount of electricity used for lighting. How Tubular Daylighting Devices Work Tubular skylights use no energy — they simply convey sunlight through the roof to the inside of the house. Light is collected into a clear dome and bounced through a coated metal tube to a diffuser lens in the ceiling. Some devices are designed with flexible tubing so installation around obstacles in the attic is easier. You can even route tubes through walled-in boxes to add natural light to a basement or the first floor of a two-story building. Natural light is not as harsh as incandescent or fluorescent light. And the diffusers on tubular daylighting devices scatter the rays so the light doesn’t cast harsh shadows. Although the full spectrum of light is allowed inside, ultraviolet (UV) rays are blocked, so furniture and carpets won’t fade from the additional natural light. Allowing natural light into dim rooms will improve your attitude, and it’s a much better light for plants.

24

Skylight Skylights allow natural light into dimly lit rooms, too. But the light is direct, leaving some areas of the space brightly lit and others in shadow. Skylights allow rooms to be warmed by the sun during the day and heat to escape at night (just like a window). But tubular daylighting devices prevent this type of heat gain and loss. Sunpipes The sunpipe provides a way to pipe natural daylight from your rooftop into your home - to brighten areas from dawn to dusk where daylight from windows cannot reach. This energy-free, super reflective tube even extends through adjustable bends and has an internal mirror finish that intensifies and reflects natural daylight delivering free outdoor light to a room or area below - where the light is evenly diffused by a translucent ceiling fixture. New windows If you have the wall space, it’s well worth enlarging small windows and introducing new ones. Ensure the new windows don’t negatively affect the building’s proportions, both indoors and out; sending its lines off balance with a badly placed window will harm its saleability and value. Don’t forget to check with your local council’s planning, building consent and conservation departments before you make alterations. This includes moving or widening windows, adding rooflights and installing sunpipes.

Class in GLASS G

lass is being used increasingly to build houses making them open and appealing to the eye. Glass allows designers to mould shapes that where not possible with concrete, wood and metal. Lighting designers have also taken this material and where as before four crystal glass balls sitting on top of each other on a table lamp or a domed frosted glass pendant used glass to it’s limits now glass can be hand blown into beautiful shapes and then injected with bright colours (Mia Fuchsia lamp) or beautifully sculptured leaving the bubbles from the blowing to create an appealing texture (Esme Garnet lamp). Arts & Craft has once again become a popular pass time and the use of felt has always been an interesting fabric to cut and make things with. The Marble ceiling lights is made with layers of felt being sewn together and then draped over a dome. This light captures an eye catching fun ceiling light that comes in many sizes and colours. The Jeeves and Wooster hats have to win the ‘I wish I thought of that!’ award. Such a simple idea the designer (Jake Phipps) has made these every day

Jeeves & Wooster hats

items into practical, inspiring lights that look great on their own or grouped together over a table. With the above examples lighting has allowed itself to do what it was supposed to, create light for us to see with but also allow us to use it to accent a room. As with the trend for wallpaper in a bold design on one wall; lamps, wall lights and ceiling lights can all be used to cheer up a tired looking room or finish the room off with a statement. Many people like to layer neutral textures throughout a room with a textured natural wool carpet, linen covered sofa and blinds or curtains in a soft unassuming tone. So it is easy to then bring in a beautiful hand blown lamp or lights that have origins in every day objects and hobbies to keep that harmonised organic feel. Bee kind to your garden M

ay time is garden time. Long bank holiday weekends with extended daylight hours to get your hands dirty, garden showcases such as Chelsea Flower Show and the first crop of home grown produce - sweet, young broad beans and gooseberries. As you sit back and enjoy that home made gooseberry fool, have a think about how your fruit got from seed to mature berry and the vital role played by insects, particularly bees, in pollinating the fruit and vegetables that we eat. It is reputed that Einstein wrote that ‘If the bee disappears from the surface of the earth, man would have no more than four years to live. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man’. Our gardens can provide valuable nectar sources for both the bumblebee and the honeybee, but their numbers are in decline. However, with a little patience and perseverance they can be encouraged into the garden by using artificial nesting boxes along with the right mix of plants and shrubs. Bumblebee numbers are down by 60% since 1970, which means that the humble bumblebee is now in danger of extinction. The main reason for this is some of the newer plant varieties we use in our gardens today and changes to countryside crops.Today’s hybrid plant varieties often don’t produce nectar or pollen and the countryside is producing less flowering plants. Although some people might find bumblebees to be a nuisance when they are trying to sit outdoors, they actually do a very

❋ ❋❋ ❋

❋ ❋❋ ❋

important job in nature. Without the bumblebee cross-pollinating flowers and plants, such as raspberries and strawberries, many of our native edible plants will become extinct, along with our beautiful native flowers. Plants that you can choose for your garden that can help keep bumblebees in business include Honeysuckle, Geranium, Foxglove, Fuschia and Lavender. A popular garden plant, whether in the border or grown in a container, Lavender is an easy herb to grow on its own or as a companion plant with roses or other plants. It is loved by bees and humans alike and emits a beautiful scent when you brush past it. It makes an excellent edge to a rose border or herb or vegetable garden and helps soften the lines of hard landscaping such as terraces or patios. Lavender plants are pretty hardy providing they are kept neat and tidy. An annual trim just before growth starts in early spring is prudent as they are inclined to get “leggy” and woody if not pruned. For Lavender to thrive and do well it needs a position that is well drained and in full sun. Adequate spacing is essential to provide good air circulation - remember that lavenders are drought tolerant only when they have become established. May is one of the most exciting months in the gardening year. Growth is well under way with seeds germinating and more needing to be sown, and young plants in the greenhouse and on the kitchen windowsill are ready to be planted out into the warm soil. Watering and weeding are key during May and throughout the summer months. Keep an eye on roses that are prone to black spot and should be sprayed now to prevent it. Spring bulbs like tulips can be lifted and stored and fast growing hedges will need a trim and clip to neaten up. Plant hanging baskets and use bedding plants in pots or borders for instant early summer colour – all readily available from your local garden centre or nursery as are the ever popular National Garden Gift Vouchers.

ABSOLUTE INTERVIEW

Leaving Leonardslee Verity Craig speaks to Robin Loder and his son Tom, as they prepare to leave the lovely Sussex landmark. Pictures by Richard Bidwell So Robin and Tom, this must be a strange time for you as you prepare to say goodbye to Leonardslee lakes & gardens? Robin: We are delighted to be able to enjoy one last season at Leonardslee with our visitors, especially as it looks like being a great flowering year! It has been in your family for over 100 years. This must have been a big family decision to sell it? Robin: Life doesn’t stand still. It’s time to do other things. Tom: It’s not a decision that happened overnight, but after a lot of thought and planning about what is best for the gardens and the family. How did this beautiful Sussex landmark come to be in your family? Robin: My great grandfather, Sir Edmund Loder, bought the Leonardslee estate from his in-laws back in 1889.

30

Are you all natural born gardeners? Robin: Yes, we all like getting our hands dirty. Tom: Actually, having managed Leonardslee for several years has given me a deep respect for the horticultural skills and passions of my predecessors. Robin, my father, opened up vast vistas across the gardens after the storms in 1987, and also developed surprising views to entrance visitors on their journey through the gardens. His father, Sir Giles, was renowned for the stunning camellias that he used to exhibit with the Royal Horticultural Society. Both were working on the canvas created by Sir Edmund, who laid out the majority of the gardens you can see today, including the creation of the loderi hybrid rhododendron that comes out with some of the most magnificent blooms of any flower around the beginning of May. The horticultural genes spread down to my brother Chris (pictured above), who has taken on and developed a thriving nursery business ‘Loder Plants’ where you can get any number of fantastic

rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and other shrubs. His website is www.rhododendrons.com So this spring season is the last chance for the public to visit Leonardslee. What will be awaiting visitors to marvel at this spring? Robin: You will only know the answer to that one when you have discovered it all for yourself! Tom: One thing to bear in mind is that the cooler weather has put back some of the flowers, and with a milder April, the later flowering blooms should be less far behind, so we would be expecting quite a strong crescendo of flowers coming into May, unless the weather turns cooler again. The doors finally close on 30th June. In your opinions, which is the best time to visit the gardens? Robin: Without doubt the middle of May. Garden opens each day at 9.30am. Come early to enjoy the fragrance at its best. Will anything special be happening on the final day of opening? Robin: I’m hoping for a bottle of champagne! But don’t wait for the last day – the garden will be at its most beautiful in May. Tom: I’ll be shutting up the greenhouse and closing the gate, thinking about what the new owner might be planning for the future. What do you think made Leonardslee such a popular destination place all these years? Robin: 200 years of imaginative gardening in one of the finest natural valley settings in south-east England. Tom: A committed gardening team who work relentlessly and know what needs to be done backing up the inspiration of my predecessors.

You usually expect visitors in the region of 40,000. Surely this year will be a bumper year? Robin: It may be, but the weather always has the last laugh! With a good flowering season I am sure that everyone will enjoy it. Tom: Being our last chance to show off the gardens, I hope that the weather will behave itself and give us the chance to let record numbers enjoy them.

Tom’s daughter Maya enjoys the spring flowers of Leonardslee

All that the public know about the new owner is that it is an overseas businessman. The question on everyone’s lips is “What are his plans?” Will he be building a new house within the grounds and keeping the current residents as they are? Robin: Sorry, you will have to wait and see! The new owner is delighted that “the wallabies will remain at Leonardslee”. Tom: I’m personally hoping that once he has had a chance to settle in he will start to feel the inspiration of the gardens and their inevitable call for horticultural devlopment. So, what now for the Loder family? Will you all remain in Sussex? Robin: My wife, Jane, and I live in East Sussex in a family home where we all lived before I took over at Leonardslee in 1981. My elder son Christopher will continue to run his own well-known rhododendron propagating nursery which he has developed adjacent to Leonardslee. My daughters have their own properties in Sussex also. Tom: My professional background was always in IT, so for me it will be back behind a screen. I’m looking forward to being able to visit the gardens in May without having to worry about how many flowers will be out! www.leonardsleegardens.com ABSOLUTE

Hot summer treats!

www.jenidodson.com

PRETTY PASTELS With heaps of sugary treats in store for us this summer, it’s gearing up to be a glorious and colourful season, and the best part is, it’s calorie-free! The new pastel trend as seen all over the US shows, including Dior, Viktor & Rolf and Versace, is such a delightful departure from the dark days of winter, and with its feminine influence and fun-loving attitude, it’s guaranteed to lift our spirits. We all deserve a little pick-me-up and these cheerful shades deliver a youthful and happy vibe, so why not give it a whirl? The Golden Rule is to adapt the trend to suit your style and adjust the shades to fit your personal preferences. But first and foremost consider some of these basic principles. Pick one area to play up, either the eyes, lips or cheeks, but do not do it all at once. Keep it simple, and you will get the best effect. Personally, I think it’s the eyes that have it!! Those who were blessed with a dark skin tone can enjoy the pleasure of sporting a wide array of pastel shades as lighter colours will stand out more. Lemon yellows are normally for the brave, but stand out incredibly on dark skin tones, while light green and lilac are good for many a skin tone and fabulous with a tan. Pastel blue suits fair skinned ladies while warmer tones can add vibrancy to the paler complexions.

By following a few simple tricks you will soon master this trend. Subtle twist - Gently does it: A great way to introduce pastels into your summer make-up is to apply just one pretty shade over the upper lid of the eye, then by simply working a little warm brown into the crease and blending through the socket line, you will not only boost and enhance the look of your eyes but will ensure that you remain safely on trend. Soft and romantic – Pastel smoky eye: Think watercolours. To create a soft wash of pastel colour, swirl a large eyeshadow brush over your chosen shade. Tap the brush to remove any excess, then dust colour upwards and outwards to the brows. Then wrap around the eye to create a larger eye dimension, add a smudge of soft eyeliner pencil a few shades darker for definition, and work it close to and into the lashes. Blend, and finish with a dark brown mascara. Bold and Contemporary – Make an impact: Choose two colours and

apply one to the top lid and then one to the bottom in a block. To add depth and intensity to the colour, apply your eyeshadow with the finger and press into place. Remember to use a clean finger when blending. Try a light purple and light green together, as these are universally flattering and surprisingly wearable. Frame the overall look with lashings of black mascara, for the ultimate final touch.

ABSOLUTE HEALTH

Feel the feeling Most people are addicted to something in their lives. Our health expert Sheryl Waters gives us some reasons why we crave certain foods and substances, and ways to work with the feelings that lead to the cravings

Y

ou may find it strange to know that most people are addicted to something at some level. When we think of addictions, we think of heroin addicts or alcoholics who are drunk on the streets. However, food is in fact the greatest addiction of all. The fact that foods such as bread, sugar, pastries and wheat pasta are toxic and addictive is rarely discussed in mainstream media, so most people never question the strength of their ties to these foods. If you find it hard to accept the idea that you might be physiologically addicted to foods like wheat, consider the fact that a smoker or alcoholic is not drawn to repeatedly use their ‘drug’ of choice from any kind of biological need. The body doesn’t need cigarettes or alcohol. They are just addicted, in the same way as people eating refined sugar or drinking coffee. There is no physiological benefit to you from consuming these things (in fact quite the opposite), yet you may feel repeatedly drawn to consume them. It is fundamentally an addiction, like any other. Yes, of course you need food to survive - however, you do not need to eat white sugar and wheat. Completely omitting these kinds of substances from your intake allows your body to finally move to a more vibrant level of health. Not all foods are physiologically addictive. There are many natural, delicious and healthy options available. Switching over to a high raw diet of fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds, and juices can make a huge difference for people in terms of liberating them from compulsive eating. Take away the toxic foods you’re addicted to and you will feel less dependent on food. After all, how many people do you see compulsively eating broccoli? Remember that a high raw and low toxic food

36

diet does not cause the highs that the highs and lows of the standard diet causes. Therefore, you won’t feel the boosts of energy that come with foods like sugar, wheat and coffee. If you are addicted, your body will be crying out for these highs. However, by consciously choosing to eliminate, or at least cut down on them, things will balance out after a short time and you will find yourself less dependent on them.

“The main reason that people have addictions is that they are distracting themselves from feeling their feelings.” Observing the mind Whether you are addicted to foods, cigarettes or alcohol, you are most likely going to need to confront your mind and the way that it keeps you running back to your vices. The main reason that people have addictions is that they are distracting themselves from feeling their feelings. People generally reach for food or a cigarette when stressful emotions come up. This can be conscious, or totally unconscious. For example, if something is extremely stressful, then you are probably aware of yourself going for a cake or a smoke, or a drink. But many people reach for their little ‘friends’ when they are bored, or when they think life needs a little boost of fun. Boredom alone can keep people locked in a cycle of addiction.

Before you reach for your vice, feel your feelings. What is going on inside of you? What sensations do you have in your body? What thoughts are running through your head? You will most likely find that there is something going on that makes you want a distraction. Unfortunately, every time you distract away from an unpleasant feeling, you are giving it more and more power over you. Feeling your feeling with acceptance is a dramatically life transforming practice. From a young age, we are generally taught that our feelings are not valid or should be run away from. This is actually the root cause of most suffering. People are either reacting to their feeling by wishing they weren’t there, or distracting away from them with a drink, a big bowl of pasta or a fag! When things get really painful, people reach for heroin and other harder drugs. The key is to actually feel your feelings. When painful feelings come up, feel them rather than running away from them. Don’t put a label on them as good or bad. Don’t judge them or wish they weren’t there or get into a story about them. Simply feeling the sensations in the body with acceptance of what they are there and they are part of being human can change them from scary, unwanted feelings that need to be got rid of, to an acceptance of they are. This can help people to deal with their addictions in a healthy, balanced way. So the next time you reach for your vice, feel what is going on internally. If you feel your feelings and then decide that you do in fact want the beer or the cake or the cigarette, then go for it. But most likely you will find some painful emotions underneath. Simply feel them. This is a major key to feeling more peaceful and joyful in your life.

FACTOR “I recently had my teeth whitened at a clinic in London.

I was expecting to come out with really white teeth, but they are only a little bit lighter than before. Is there anything I can do to make them whiter?

T

his is a common scenario, with many teeth whitening systems the results can often be variable, only producing slight differences in the shade of your teeth. The theory behind tooth whitening is that a special gel is applied to the surface of your teeth, which then bleaches them over time, producing a beautiful white smile. Dr Javad says “Over the years I have used nearly every tooth whitening system available on the market and I must admit with some I had a hard time convincing myself there was a difference in shade. When I was out in the States a couple of years ago I tried the Enlighten deep bleaching system for myself, the results were quite simply amazing, so I decided that this was the system that I would use in my practice” The Enlighten teeth whitening system was developed in the States and produces consistent and dramatic results. The gel itself is different from conventional

whitening treatments in that it combines with oxygen to penetrate deep within the tooth structure and whiten the teeth from the inside rather than just the outer surface. It is the only system that can even whiten teeth that have been stained by certain antibiotic treatments. Dr Javad is one of a few dentists that is fully accredited to offer Enlighten tooth whitening. Now you know the secret to how celebrities achieve their show stopping dazzling white smiles. If you would like to learn more about the revolutionary Enlighten whitening system or find out how you could benefit from it then call The Shoreham Smile Studio 01273 464454 or visit www.shorehamsmilestudio.co.uk to book a FREE whitening consultation with Dr Javad.

Young guns Celebrity steal their style Around this time of year it’s time to start thinking about summer hair! Coachella is currently underway in the States, which will set trends for our own festival hairstyles here in the UK - Glastonbury attendees take note! Plaits featured heavily on the Spring 2010 catwalks and are going to be huge for this summer, which is great as it’s a simple, quick way to achieve a chic style. For inspiration look no further than Lauren Conrad - queen of plaits (pictured). It’s a sleek take on the boho style and oozes California cool. The style is simple to achieve and can easily be translated into a glamorous up do, just add backcombing and slip into a chignon. To achieve the look wavy, textured hair is required. Scrunch some salt spray through damp hair and leave to dry naturally, or dry with diffuser to create movement. When the hair is dry, help the kinks created by the salt spray look ‘undone’ and textured by brushing them through with a soft bristle hairbrush so as not to brush the texture out completely. Comb in a deep side parting and part the front section of hair into a triangle section, this can be as big or small as you like as this is where your plait is going to start. Spray the hair with Kérastase Double Force Spray (£15.50, www.electric-hair.com) to tame any flyaway hairs. Then do a simple plait with that section, keeping it free from the rest of the hair. Use a blonde snag-free band to secure and pin it into place underneath the top layer of hair so that it can’t be seen and doesn’t budge.

LETTER OF THE MONTH I wash my hair every day, and am worried it will damage it by stripping the hair of natural oils. Is this true? It is not ideal to wash your hair every day, but typically English hair has a tendency to be fine and prone to oiliness which can lead to it looking flat. If this is the case, listen to your hair and don’t skip washing. Instead, try just wetting the hair - skipping shampooing and conditioning the ends, as this is far less stressful. If you still feel like you need to cleanse, concentrate on the technique you use whilst shampooing - don’t rub the product into the hair as this can be too abrasive and damaging. Instead, use the balls of your fingertips and gently massage a small amount into the scalp only never the ends. A good shampoo to gently cleanse and strengthen the hair is Kérastase Bain De Force (£11.65

For extra grip and texture just slightly backcomb the area where you pin the plait with a Denman Hair-up brush.

250ml www.electric-hair.com) which helps to reconstruct the hair internally to rebuild substance and resistance, without stripping it of essential oils.

ABSOLUTE DENTAL COLUMN

WORD OF MOUTH What is ITOPS? Sandy Bone, dental hygienist at Marina Dentalcare, explains this scheme that helps to give you a clean and healthy mouth

F

rom my very first patient, almost without exception, everyone wants to know the ‘proper’ way to clean their teeth. It is understandable that our patients become confused as they listen carefully to what we at the Marina Dentalcare tell them to do, go home and practice it, and yet we still say to them that they are not doing it properly! Cleaning your own mouth to a standard that is good enough to prevent disease both in the mouth and in the rest of the body is a skill that like other skills takes a while to learn and involves much more than just following a toothbrush technique. It involves awareness of what you are trying to achieve and when you have done it. As a child, I always wanted to help my mother with the housework. That particular desire with regard to pushing a Hoover has long since gone. But the feelings of outrage and disappointment when she did again what I had just done, ‘because I had missed a bit’ have never left me because I tried so hard to get it right. Just as our patients do. My first problem was that I was completely unaware of what I was trying to do. I felt that if I pushed the vacuum cleaner for long enough then I must achieve a clean floor. Toothbrushing, or to give it a more appropriate name mouth cleaning, is similar to that. It is not about the latest brush that has just been marketed or the amazing things that a new toothpaste can do, it is about awareness of what you are trying to achieve, and realising when you have or have not been successful. This was the realisation that came to Professor Nieldlemeyer some years ago in his Danish University when he realised that despite all of his efforts to tell people how to care for their mouths, the message did not seem to result in plaque-free mouths. This was how the ITOPS theory was formed. He realised that everyone had different needs and that no general ‘proper’ way of cleaning teeth would ever be sufficient to give people the skills that they needed. No leaflet telling you what you should be doing,

40

or quick description of Blogg’s Toothbrushing technique, would ever be sufficient. No one technique or cleaning method could give his patients what they wanted. They were all much too general and, because of that, did not apply to this particular patient. The only way to give people the skills that they needed was by teaching them about themselves in a very detailed way, individually. He suggested that to teach effective oral hygiene skills it was necessary to use the sense of touch, the patients touch. This works because plaque is easier to feel than it is to see, and the technique is learned and remembered by that same sense of touch.

“Taking the time to learn, in this very specific way, how to care for your mouth offers many benefits to our patients." Today more than ever with the realisation that diseases can be both triggered and prevented by the way that we care for our teeth, learning effective skills becomes ever more important. It is no longer about keeping your teeth clean it is about keeping the whole of your body fit for life. Because it takes time to teach in this very individual way, it is not possible to give as much time as is often needed to give these skills during an ordinary scale and polish appointment. So at Marina Dentalcare we are now able to offer ITOPS appointments. Taking the time to learn, in this very specific way, how to care for your own mouth offers many benefits to our patients. Acquiring the skills to clean your own mouth effectively will literally save you hours of time spent in dental chairs. It may well save you hours in your doctor’s surgery as well as it is known now that the long term inflammation that is present in Periodontal (Gum) Disease is indicated in triggering other systemic diseases e.g. some heart conditions. Very few patients manage to

achieve a completely inflammation-free mouth without specialist tuition. One of the reasons for that is that despite the best efforts of our patients, mouths are very dark and inaccessible places and it takes our specialist equipment to help you discover precisely what is effective, and what is ineffective or even damaging in your care technique. Making sure that you are in control of your oral health so that the discomfort and pain that has to be drug-controlled is unlikely to happen, will not only save you a fortune in money, but also in your time, and lead to a more comfortable life. That extra comfort will be enhanced by the amount of money that you can save by not having completely preventable diseases treated. The learning of these skills will be very cost effective in the long run. What exactly happens at an ITOPS appointment? Firstly, we will take time in exploring what you are achieving, and what needs to be improved. Once you can see the need for change, we will then decide which is the best way for you to do so. It may be that using an interdental brush in a particular area is required, or maybe an interspace brush. Maybe what you are using is the right tool but it is being used in a way that is not giving you the results. You may need extra tools to get it right - we will make sure that you have them, and that you know exactly what you are trying to achieve. No dental treatment as such is undertaken at an ITOPS appointment. We will only be teaching you about your mouth and how to care for it - how to keep it in top condition so that it looks and feels as good as it can. It may be that more time is needed. If that is so, then we can arrange for that. We will give you the feedback on your efforts so that you are absolutely aware of what you are doing - so that at long last you will know exactly what the proper way is to brush your teeth! ABSOLUTE LIFE COACHING

Talk the talk

The Voice of Reason by Terrina Clifton-Moore and Georgina Paget Absolute Brighton Coaching “Hi Georgina and Terrina. My partner complains that I am not good at communicating with him. At work I was told to improve how I communicate with my team... help!” Jean, Shoreham Dear Jean We recently talked to a group of teenagers who are about to launch themselves out into the world of work - young enthusiastic faces all about to qualify in their chosen area of work, keen to get out and begin new careers. We asked them if there was one personal skill that they think is the most important to them and the one that is crucial in becoming successful. Almost without exception they replied “communication.” We had to agree. It is crucial, but what exactly do we mean when we say we have good communication skills? NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) practitioners suggest that there are 3 steps to building effective communication:

1 Know your outcome: Communication will always be better when you know what you hope to achieve at the end of it. It always helps if this is a positive outcome - specific, and in the same direction as the person you are communicating with. 2 Open your senses: Perhaps the most effective way of knowing your message has been understood and, more importantly, you have conveyed the message as you intend, is in reading the unspoken language of the other person’s body. Their eye contact, skin colour, gestures and expressions to name just a few. Be aware. 3 Be flexible: Always remember that effective communication is based on the principle that ‘the understanding of your communication is the response you get.’ Some of the most important skills we need in relation to communication are our ability to build rapport, our sense of empathy with others and being aware of our unspoken

body language, as only 7% of what we communicate is with words. There’s a lot to do before we even open our mouths. Listen well, understand better, care more. To improve your communication skills why not start with a conversation with Absolute Coaching. Call Georgina or Terrina on 07912 206483. ABSOLUTE BUSINESS PROFILE

Get the body you want with the body you have What is the secret of a successful beauty establishment? Absolute Brighton talks to the owner of Beauty Secrets, Beryl Martin, about the successful business. Pictures by Graham Franks

Beryl, why did you set up a beauty salon was it something you always wanted to do? I set up Beauty Secrets over 25 years ago. I had always wanted to work for myself and provide a service where I could help other people improve their quality of life. My vision was to offer the best in beauty, holistic, medical and cosmetic innovations with the heart of the business based on exceptional customer service. Beauty Secrets still remains a family firm run with family values as my daughters and I form an integral part of the management team. You have three salons. Which was the first salon to open, and is there a particular reason you chose these locations? We have three salons based in Horsham, Hove and Godalming. Horsham was our first salon which is also our Day Spa, along with a spa in Godalming. We wanted to open a salon which was different than the normal everyday beauty salon but still catering to a local market. Horsham felt like the ideal location to launch Beauty Secrets as it was home to us as a family. All three locations are unique yet still fairly close in proximity to each other. Godalming is a typically quintessential pretty town and being close to London enables us to cater to clients who perhaps work in the City. Being by the coast, Hove caters to a really cosmopolitan, bohemian clientele and Horsham is a lovely idyllic town based in the country and our spa there attracts local customers, some who have been coming to us from the day we opened!

44

Have you made any changes over the past 12 months, such as introducing any new treatments etc? Yes. It is important to keep your business fresh and so we constantly update our treatment list and introduce new and exciting treatments and products. All of our beauty therapists are trained on a regular basis to the highest standard which makes them some of the most highly-trained in the industry; this is recognised in the regular annual awards that we win. It is exciting for us and our clients when we offer a new treatment and our seasonal open evenings offer regular and new clients the opportunity to see and hear about all the new launches. Last year was an exciting time for us as we kicked off the summer with a fresh new logo design and a revamp of our salon brochures. The overall look of the new brochures is clean and fresh, representing the Beauty Secrets awardwinning brand in a more contemporary manner. In October we launched our Recommend a Friend scheme which gives you the opportunity to receive a special thank you from us... each time you recommend a friend who spends £50 or over, we’ll give you a £5 gift voucher. How is the business doing at the moment? The business is doing very well. Last year was a difficult year financially for everyone but with the flexibility of our staff and the range of exceptional beauty offers, we endeavoured to help ease the financial strain while maintaining a high level of service for our customers. We have introduced

a number of fantastic new face and body treatments, and with an exceptional and loyal client base as well as new customers that come through the door every day, we aim to keep Beauty Secrets at the forefront of beauty. What does Beauty Secrets have planned for the rest of 2010/2011? We are introducing our exciting new website in the next couple of months which will be more informative and easily accessible so you can access Beauty Secrets 24/7 if required! We also aim to continually grow the business and to keep at the forefront of developments within the beauty industry, bringing the most up-to-date and technologically advanced treatments to our clients. Why should people come to Beauty Secrets - what can they expect? Beauty Secrets lives by the mantra to offer the best in beauty, holistic, medical and cosmetic innovations with the heart of the business based on exceptional customer service. At each of our salons and spas, we use only the finest products and have exceptional standards when it comes to our clients’ needs. At Beauty Secrets, we create the ‘Client Journey’. Each journey is individually tailored to suit you and your state-ofmind; helping you on the pathway to wellbeing, personal satisfaction and confidence. What distinguishes Beauty Secrets from other salons in Sussex? We are the only salon in the area that offers four world-class skincare houses under one roof

Boulevards of dreams

Neil Geraghty takes a Spring trip to the sparkle of Palm Springs

I

n January four inches of rain fell in Palm Springs, and everywhere you go in town people are still talking about it. For us rain-soaked Brits this might seem a slight overreaction, but for a desert city that basks in almost perpetual sunshine, those four inches were the equivalent of Noah’s Flood. One bonus of this unexpected deluge is that the annual desert in bloom extravaganza is turning out to be one of the most spectacular in living memory. Barrel cactuses that dot the mountainsides are bursting out in a profusion of huge crimson flowers and later on in the season the spectacular carpets of orange and yellow Californian poppies promise to be every bit as mesmerising as a scene from The Wizard of Oz. Spring is a wonderful time to visit Palm Springs. There are few places in the world where you can lounge around the pool sipping martinis while staring up at snow-covered mountains sparkling in the desert sunshine. It’s this fabulous climate and stunning location that first attracted the Hollywood Rat Pack back in the 1930s and ever since then, a dusting of silver screen glamour has floated over the town. From street names such as Bob Hope Drive to glittering celebrity homes that line the palm fringed boulevards, Palm Springs reads like a Debretts of Hollywood fame and fortune and it’s impossible not be captivated by this fascinating celebrity heritage. One of the best ways to immerse yourself in A List living is to take an architectural tour of the town. Robert Imber of Palm Springs Modern Tours is an infectiously enthusiastic guide and with his dapper chinos and straw hat looks like he’s just stepped off court from Palm Spring’s fabled Racquet Club. He’s passionate about the town’s unparalleled collection

of mid century modernist homes and has a gossip columnist’s insight into all the shenanigans that went on behind their walls. No expense was spared by Hollywood’s stars in creating the ultimate in contemporary living and top modernist architects from around the world were enlisted to help achieve this. With crisp angular roofs, floor to ceiling glass walls and delightful cactus and palm gardens these celebrity homes have provided a blueprint of aspirational living that has remained virtually unchanged right down to Channel 4’s Grand Designs of today. If you’re lucky, you may be able to get a glimpse inside a celebrity home. Some are hired out as party venues and allow tours in when they’re not in use. Frank Sinatra’s Twin Palms has a gorgeous piano shaped swimming pool. Look out for the cracked wash basin where legend has it Ava Gardner threw a vase at him during one of their tempestuous rows. The most stunning house of all is the Elrod House built by futuristic architect John Lautner in 1969. Clinging to a mountainside like a crashed UFO, the house was used as a film set for Diamonds Are Forever and when you see the giant fluffy white carpet in the cavernous circular lounge you’ll feel like rolling around like Pussy Galore. Palm Springs is awash with historic hotels all lovingly renovated to capture the full fun and glamour of their Hollywood heyday. The Riviera or ‘Riv ‘ as it’s affectionately known was once a legendary watering hole popular with the likes of Dean Martin and Elvis. while remaining faithful to its 1950s lounge style roots. Don’t miss the diamante pool table in the foyer and grab a seat by the fire pits dotted around the infinity pool; the perfect spot to enjoy lingering prickly pear margaritas under the desert stars. It sometimes feels that the whole town has fallen in love with its 1950s and 60s heritage. From quirky interior design shops filled with organic shaped furniture to independent boutiques brimming with kaleidoscopic hippy chic, Palm Springs is enjoying a retro design craze that is making it one of the hippest fashionista hang outs in The States. Ace Hotel is at the vanguard of this new desert chic. Once a shabby motel and highway diner, it now hosts Doowap parties by the pool in which a tiny Sergeant Pepper style caravan roves around rustling up the meanest cocktails in town. Don’t miss the 1970’s black and white photo booth by the bar covered in hilarious “reject” shots of late night punters the worst for wear. Palm Springs is a small laid back town and the suburbs soon fizzle out into some of the most hypnotically beautiful scenery in California. A few miles outside town The Indian Canyons are the ancestral homelands of the Agua Caliente Cahuilla Indians (www.indian-canyons.com). William, a local Native American guide, like so many rangers you encounter in The States had a hell raising youth and only found inner peace when he rediscovered the great outdoors. His tales of harmonious indigenous life and his own spiritual journey have groups of city cynics hanging off his every word. Hiking along the canyons is a stunning experience. Fractured pink coloured cliffs hang over bubbling palm fringed streams while the cool air flutters with butterflies and humming birds. For a more hair raising encounter with Mother Nature, hop on a jeep safari to the San Andreas Fault. Desert Adventures (www.red-jeep.com) offer white knuckle rides into the heart of the world’s most infamous earthquake zone. Menacingly beautiful, an eerie tension hangs over the hushed landscape. Giant great horned owls stare down from Californian fan palms while chuckwallas (blue iguanas) bask motionless on the red

“It sometimes feels that the whole town has fallen in love with its 1950s and 60s heritage.” rocks. Up above the Pacific and North American tectonic plates literally jab at each other with fingers of twisted rock. It comes as a shock to learn that the cliff faces are in fact pulverised rock, tons of which can avalanche down on top of you at the drop of a pin. With dozens of tremors a week this really is a nail biting trip to the seismic edge. Back in town you can calm your nerves with a night out at Palm Springs legendary Fabulous Follies (www. psfollies.com). For 20 years The Follies’ show girls all in their 60s, 70s and 80s have been wowing audiences with their magnificent costumes and even more magnificent legs. In between the song and dance routines Palm Springs’ sizeable retiree community bears the brunt of hilarious wise cracking stand up routines. The oldest performing showgirl is Dorothy Kloss a sprightly beaming 86 year old who gets thunderous applause when she whirls around on stage in a blossom coloured headdress representing spring. In a world gradually being stripped of its charm it’s rather fabulous to find such an oasis of glamour in the middle of the breathtaking Californian desert.

VEG OUT! Delicious meals to celebrate National Vegetarian Week

Tofu Rendang (Malaysia) Serves 4 Preparation time 10-15 mins Cooking times 20 mins Ingredients 3 tbsp desiccated coconut 2 garlic cloves 6 shallots or 1 onion, sliced 2 stalks lemongrass, peeled and sliced 2-3 fresh red chillies 2 tbsp fresh ginger, grated 1 tsp turmeric 1 tsp salt 1 tsp sugar 250ml tin coconut milk 125ml water 1 tsp tamarind pulp, dissolved in 1 tablespoon water 4 star anise 1 cinnamon stick 2 x 150g packs Cauldron Marinated Tofu Pieces 2 tbsp fresh coriander, roughly chopped, plus extra to garnish

Method 1. Heat a dry frying pan, add the desiccated coconut and toast until lightly golden. 2. Pound or blend together the toasted coconut, garlic, shallots or onion, lemongrass, chillies, ginger, turmeric, salt and sugar to make a paste. 3. Heat the oil in a heavy based frying pan. Add the paste and cook for 5 minutes, stirring, until fragrant. 4. Add the coconut milk to the pan, along with 125 ml water, the tamarind water, star anise and cinnamon stick and bring to the boil, stirring constantly. 5. Reduce the heat and simmer gently for a further 5 minutes. Then add the Cauldron Marinated Tofu Pieces and continue to cook gently for another 10 minutes. Stir in the chopped coriander. 6. To serve, garnish with more fresh coriander. Delicious served with steamed rice or noodles and chilli fried spinach (see this recipe at www.cauldronfoods.co.uk).

Sunshine Smoothie with Mango and Orange Serves 2

Method

A breakfast option in the V-Healthy meal plan

1. Use a zester to make a few shreds of zest for garnish. Grate more zest to give ¼ tsp grated orange zest. Squeeze juice from the orange. There should be about 4 tbsps (60ml).

Preparation time 15 mins

2. Wrap the grated ginger in a small square of muslin and twist hard to extract the juice (or use a juicer).

Ingredients 1 large orange 2.5cm root ginger, grated 100g yoghurt or soya yoghurt 150g drained, tinned mango (reserve juice or syrup) 2 tsp wheatgerm (optional) 1 tbsp porridge oats 1 tsp cinnamon (optional) 2-3 drops vanilla extract (optional)

3. Put all ingredients into a liquidizer and blend until smooth. Taste. Sweeten with a little of the reserved juice from the tinned mango, if needed, and blend again. 4. Serve in glasses and garnish with the shreds of zest. Note: tinned apricots also work well in place of mango.

Zesty Pesto Tofu with Mediterranean Salad Serves 4 A dinner option in the V-Healthy meal plan Preparation time 5 mins Marinating time 1-12 hours Cooking time 45 mins

Ingredients 1 pack (250g) Cauldron plain tofu 6 cloves garlic, crushed 1 tsp olive oil 1 tsp salt

For the zesty pesto 80g fresh basil 1 lemon, finely grated zest and 3 tbsp juice 2 cloves garlic, crushed 25g pine nuts 2–3 tsp vegetarian or vegan stock powder pinch caster sugar salt and pepper to season 6–8 tbsp low fat natural yoghurt/soya yoghurt

Method 1. Drain Cauldron tofu. Wrap securely, like a parcel, in several layers of kitchen paper and place on a board. Press gently to extract as much liquid as possible without crumbling the tofu. Repeat this process until there is only a little moisture coming through the paper. Cut tofu in half horizontally and then in each direction 4 times to make small cubes. Place in large bowl. 2. Put 6 cloves of crushed garlic in a small bowl with oil and salt and mix well. Dot the mixture over the Cauldron tofu cubes and, taking care not to break the cubes, coat them with the garlic paste. Cover tightly and marinate in fridge for between 1 and 12 hours. 3. Preheat oven to 180C/350/F/Gas 4. Line a baking tray with baking parchment/non-stick baking paper. 4. Place tofu on lined baking tray and cook for 30 minutes, stirring after 20 minutes. 5. Put basil leaves, lemon zest and juice, garlic and pine nuts into a processor and blend until a paste is formed. Add stock powder, sugar, salt and pepper and process again briefly. 6. When the tofu is cooked turn off oven. Put half the pesto into a large bowl. Add cooked tofu and gently turn it over to cover all cubes. Put tofu back onto baking tray and return to oven for 5 minutes. Remove from oven and leave to cool. 7. Mix yoghurt with 6–8 tsp of remaining pesto. Arrange the salad on individual plates, scatter with tofu cubes and dress with a little of the yoghurt. Serve the remaining dressing separately.

ABSOLUTE PROPERTY

Living by the water Whether river, harbour, quayside or marina, the benefits of a life by the water are being enjoyed by more and more people looking for a less stressful, and healthier environment

T

he trend for living by areas of water has become one of the hottest property phenomenon of recent times. The Waterfront Report, produced by the Daily Mail Ideal Home Show in association with NPower, and British Waterways, reveals the growth and impact of waterside housing across the UK, and explores the lifestyle and psychological benefits of choosing to live by the water’s edge. People who had made their homes by the water were asked to participate in the report. Most people asked said that the water was an important factor in the choosing of the location of their home. Many obviously chose for the everchanging view, and the relaxing environment. Some indicated that a waterside location offers more potential for leisure activities, and to view

the wildlife. When asked what the greatest lifestyle benefits are, most indicated that waterside living promotes a less stressful lifestyle, less noise, and is beneficial for health and wellbeing. Waterside living is no longer the domain of the 1980s yuppies who first took up residence in the dockland conversions in London. Research by Frank Knight shows that it’s not just young buyers who are moving into waterside properties. They have noticed that there is a growing number of couples choosing to sell the country pad after their children have left home, preferring instead the design-led, urban appeal of waterside living. There are many beautiful sites in Sussex which epitomize all that’s good about life by the water.

BRIGHTON MARINA

ROPETACKLE

In 1985 Brighton Marina was taken over by Brent Walker led by flamboyant boxer turned businessman George Walker, who immediately commenced construction of a Village Square development of shops and restaurants. This was followed by flats and houses built on promontories overlooking the inner harbour. Brent Walker became victims of the tough 1980’s economic climate and sold the Marina to Brunswick Developments Plc, headed by millionaire Andrew Goodall. Once again the project surged ahead with the construction of a bowling complex health and fitness centre and casino. The key to Brunswick’s plans was the introduction of specialist developers for specialist projects. The residential development of 800 flats and houses was undertaken by Barratt. The Marina itself was leased to Premier Marinas and the commercial section of the Marina was handed over to Parkridge Developments specialists in retail and leisure projects. Parkridge came up with the design and construction of the ‘Waterfront’ a four storey complex incorporating retail units and an hotel and restaurants with spectacular views over the Marina. The Waterfront opened for business in October 2002.

The exciting Ropetackle waterfront development in the centre of Shoreham-by-Sea, has become a pioneering model for the sustainable redevelopment of derelict sites throughout the South East. It was developed by the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) in partnership with Berkeley Homes. SEEDA has ensured that high quality urban design and sustainability are at the heart of the project. All buildings have been constructed to stringent design and architectural standards. The project partners have minimised the environmental impact of the scheme and all the new buildings are highly energy efficient, embrace renewable energy technology, and all the new homes have been built to the industry recognised BRE EcoHomes ‘Excellent’ rating. This mixed use development, comprising 180 residential dwellings and dedicated business space, is also making a positive contribution to promoting wildlife friendly habitats. A total of 14 swift, bat and tit boxes have been incorporated into the development to counteract a recent population decline affecting swifts and bats due to the loss of suitable feeding sites.

SOVEREIGN HARBOUR Opened in 1993, Sovereign Harbour is the largest composite marina in the UK, encompassing The Waterfront retail complex and surrounded by an expanding, high quality residential area, with thousands of houses, apartments and luxury flats. Over 600 permanent berth holders and some 3,000 visiting yachts each year are testament to its growing popularity and Sovereign Harbour is an ideal location for both short stopovers, longer stays and a great place to live. Built on land known as The Crumbles, Sovereign Harbour is Eastbourne’s prestigious residential, retail and marina development. It is arranged around an outer tidal harbour, four inner basins and along the sea shore. Developed by Carillion, the marina is formed around five separate harbours. The Outer Harbour is tidal, whilst the Inner, South, North and West Harbours are entered through two high capacity locks. www.sovereignharbour.com

Letting it happen Ben Cannon, from Lanes Lettings in Brighton, discusses the letting trends in this, the first of a regular monthly column, keeping you updated on the rental market

I

founded Lanes Lettings in early 2009 with a new approach in mind. I wanted a team ready to put customers at the forefront of all that they do and I have managed to accomplish that in my first 12 months of trading. We have built up a solid reputation through hard work and determination and have invested in staff that understand the lettings market. Staff that can respond quickly and effectively to any enquiry. Building on this we have decided to write a monthly article to keep you updated on what’s going on in the lettings market in Brighton and Hove. As an agent you live and die on the quality of the communication you offer. We like to keep you updated 100% of the time. This is why when we receive the rent from your property it is immediately passed on to you by direct bank transfer ensuring same day payments. It’s your money - it should be in your account. The Market The lettings market is encouragingly buoyant at the moment if you have a property to rent. The main reason for this being that the glut of last year’s “accidental landlords” who couldn’t sell their property have decided to head back to the sales market and sell their property. They are seeing some buyer confidence return to that market and as a result less properties are available to let. This reinforces the fact that there is a higher demand for rental property leading to shorter vacant periods and possibly a slightly higher rental return.

B0510_060 Lanes Letting.indd 1

Wednesday surgery With the above in mind we our offering a unique service. Each Wednesday you can book in an appointment to see us and discuss your property, perhaps whether to sell or rent, or if anything is needed to be done before you rent it out or if you just require some buy to let advice and no cost to you. What you can expect from us each month is an update on the rental market and the little things we are doing to help and encourage all of our clients. We are currently a champion for the Rocking Horse Appeal and aim to raise as much money as we can this year. With this in mind, and to celebrate our first birthday at the end of May we are planning a special event at our offices. Thanks for your interest im my column and I look forward to speaking with you again next month. Ben Cannon Lanes Lettings, 42 Baker Street, Brighton BN1 4JN Tel: 01273 600068 www.laneslettings.com

ABSOLUTE PLACES Magnificent Palmeira Mansions

Brighton, well Hove, actually Hove has often been considered as Brighton’s more desirable neighbour. Resident Tim Parker ensures us that it continues to stand its ground in the shadow of the mighty city it stands beside. Pictures Graham Franks

W

ho first coined the phrase... ‘Hove, Actually’? Nobody knows, but it certainly struck a chord as, in the years after the Regency, Brighton slowly but surely lost its prestige. There were better places to live than scruffy, dirty Brighton and one of those places was Hove. There were splendid houses in Brunswick, Palmeria and Adelaide, and quiet tree-lined roads with more modest residences for genteel ladies and gentleman. Hove Lawns with its promenade became a place to see and be seen. As for Brighton, well Queen Victoria took one look at the town and vowed never to return. And so it was that as Brighton declined, Hove prospered. Anxious to distance themselves from the thieves, pickpockets and drunks of Brighton, Hove residents were careful to make the distinction: ‘I hear you live in Brighton’, ‘Well, Hove actually’. There was, however, a downside to living in Hove, as my much loved, theatrical Aunt Muriel often pointed out when my wife Beth and I (who had come to live in Brighton in I960) visited her for tea (proper tea in those days, fish paste sandwiches with the crusts cut off and cakes). “It is so sensible of you, my darlings, to live in Brighton; the rates in Hove are an absolute disgrace.” Hard to credit now, but in the 1960s Brighton rates were considerably cheaper than Hove’s. Brighton may have been ‘less desirable’ but it was nevertheless a thriving town with businesses that still 62

made things - railway carriages, typewriters, cash registers, switch gear for the Royal Navy and beer. We had two breweries. Well known Hove resident So while tradesmen thrived in Brighton, Hove laid claim to its most famous resident, W. S. C., Winston Spencer Churchill. Albeit he had been ‘resident’ for a mere two years from 1883 as a schoolboy, at numbers 29 and 30 Brunswick Road. Arriving at Kate and Charlotte Thompson’s school after a miserable time under the harsh regime of his previous school in Ascot, Winston survived pneumonia and thrived in Hove. Remembering his old school with affection he recalled in his memoirs, “I liked plenty of history, French and learning poetry by heart. I also liked horse riding and lots of swimming”. When Beth and I first came to Brighton we lived in Kemptown and then for many years on The Cliff, overlooking the sea and the marina. That was a real privilege. And now we live in ‘Hove Actually’. What’s the difference? Well, we both miss the views – just before a storm you could see as far as the Isle of Wight - being near the sea, but now for the first time we are surrounded by trees. There is a splendid line of Dutch Elms, noble and magnificent, in our road which together with a flourishing bird life bring us much pleasure. Dutch Elm disease, while no longer rampant is still a

Hove Park is a real credit to the town, and Hove Rec. has improved beyond measure since the Rugby Club took over problem and each year we lose one or two trees which are not being replaced. (Note to self – contact the local Council regarding this without further delay). Living in Hove, what does surprise me is the amount of building which continues despite the recession. So much so, that the character of Hove, north of the railway is changing. It will be sad for leafy Hove if garden development continues unchecked. Of course we need more homes but how long will the robins, the long tailed tits, the wrens, the thrushes, blackbirds, starlings, and my friend the lonely green woodpecker survive as ever more buildings crowd them out? As it is the sparrows have already left our road; there were three last year but I have not seen one this year. Hove today Right, now let me take you for a trip round Hove as it is today. We will start at the sea front and the Hove Lawns, the splendid esplanade that stretches to Hove Lagoon where Heather Mills does the catering. There are marvellous Georgian houses and terraces together with the Hove floral clock and Queen Victoria standing, or is she sitting, at the bottom of The Drive. There is wonderful music in All Saints Church, excellent curries at The Ashoka and good Italian fare at Topolinos in Church Road. Hove Town Hall has a grand interior and the Sussex County Cricket Club retains some of its old world charm. Hove Park is a real credit to the town, and Hove Rec. has improved beyond measure since the Rugby Club took over; it is great to see hundreds of children playing there on a Sunday morning. Then there is Blatchington Mill and the Goldstone Pumping Station known as the Hove Engineerium. It was good of Mr Holland to save the Engineerium for the town. Can he now open it up to the public, please! Hove Museum with its Jaipur gateway is open and there is lots inside to see and wonder at. St Andrew’s Church is not often open but it’s a jewel, see it if you can. And always there is the sea with its ever-changing moods. As Rt. Hon Lord Broadbridge of Brighton K.C.V.O. K. St. J said in the 1951 Focus on Brighton and Hove Guide – “Anyone visiting Brighton and Hove (actually) need never be dull”.

T

he Head, staff and pupils at Roedean Junior School in Kemptown, are delighted to have been praised as a ‘stunningly good prep school’ by an outstanding review in the latest issue of The Good Schools Guide, which arrived at book stores across the UK earlier this year. The four page in-depth and impartial review by experienced educationalists comments: “Roedean’s own purpose-built brand new junior school is in the heart of Kemptown - one road up from the Brighton promenade, cool in the leafiest, quietest and most desirable bit of Brighton. It is a stunningly good little prep in its own right, and one which this most attractive of Brighton’s ‘suburbs’ should take to its heart. Inspirational teaching is evident, too.” Mr Huw May, the Head, is thrilled that the school has received such a full and glowing report. “It is very encouraging that the energy, vision and hard work from both the staff and pupils into making this such a successful educational community, has been recognised in this way.” The Good Schools Guide is recognised as the leading guide to independent schools. Their printed and on-line directory is relied on by thousands of parents as they choose the best school for their children in the UK and overseas. The junior school, which caters for over 100 pupils from the ages of 3 - 11, merged with Roedean Senior School in February 2009. As the Guide states: ‘It is a good little school and it opens doors to a good notable one.’

he Open Houses Festival takes place over the first four weekends in May, during the Brighton Festival. Over 1,000 artists will exhibit their work at over 200 venues across Brighton and Hove, and the surrounding area. This is the biggest event of its kind in the country and has been running since Ned Hoskins first opened his house to the public in 1982. There are now 15 trails, including new trails of Ouze Valley in Lewes and surrounds, and the Bristol Estate Studios Trail in the centre of town. Entry to Open House venues is free and visitors have the opportunity to meet the artists and buy unique and affordable work directly from them. The festival is a truly inclusive community event. As well as houses showing the work of established artists and makers, the venues include exhibitions in schools, student houses and a centre for young homeless people. There are also two venues showing the work of artists with learning

A TYPE OF ART

Brighton artist Julia Trigg lets us preview her ephemera-based collages, on show at Nine by Nine, a new Brighton Open House on the Dyke Road Arts Trail

J

ulia graduated from the Royal College of Art more years ago than she cares to remember. She loves to collect all kinds of typography-based ephemera, and her art reflects this. The inspiration comes from old stamps, postcards and packaging, often featuring antique and woodblock type. She couldn’t bear to tear up the original ephemera to use in her collages, so by working digitally, Julia is able to scan items and do whatever she likes. This means she can be more experimental with colour, scale, texture and composition, so creating lively, graphic and contemporary pieces. Julia says: “I love to discover beauty in the detail of these found objects. The fantastic textures of the paper and smudgy inks look amazing at large scales – you are not used to seeing these items in such abstract forms, so they make you look at them in a new light. I also like lining things up (or not) and the harmony or tension this creates. The compositions I often use have a flavour of cubist/ dadaist art.” A completely different series of typographic prints are ‘Love Letters’ (top right), where each letter of the alphabet is carefully crafted to form an abstract and decorative composition. The entire alphabet is available and each letter can be commissioned in a variety of colourways. Julia’s work is available as signed, limited edition prints, available framed or unframed. Solid silver

About British Silver Week: Modern silversmithing in the UK is enjoying a renaissance unparalleled since the 18th century. Contemporary design in silverware is crossing the boundaries between art and functionality – stylish, modern, statement pieces of silverware that reflect modern living.

ohn Higgins Contemporary Silver will exhibit the work of more than twenty five contemporary silversmiths from across the UK as part of British Silver Week 2010. This unique event will see all exhibits displayed on open shelves, giving visitors the opportunity to pick up and handle the pieces, rather than looking at them through glass cabinets. John says: “I really like people to pick up and touch contemporary silver so they can begin to get familiar with the pieces.” John wants to create an informal, relaxed atmosphere for customers to enjoy the exhibition, and he will be on hand to answer any questions about the art of silversmithing or any of the 100+ pieces on display. He says: “This is a wonderful opportunity for people to come along, enjoy some refreshments, and see the latest contemporary silver and enamelling from most of the best British talents. Issuing invitations to people means I can provide visitors with sufficient time and space, so they can see everything at their own pace and ask whatever questions they may have.” As John likes to give customers time and space to enjoy the exhibition, the event is being held on an invitation-only basis. Anyone wishing to request an invitation to this exclusive, unique event should call him on 07715 491686 or email contemporarysilver@live.com. For more information and news, visit www.britishsilverweek.co.uk. Some of the silversmiths’ pieces are unique commissions that have been specially made for this exhibition and will not be seen anywhere else. John has handselected each and every item on display. He says: “I’m a collector as well as a dealer, and I have to like the things I sell. This is more than just a commercial venture – I would be happy to have any of the pieces in my personal collection.” This special invitation-only exhibition, where all the pieces on show are available for visitors to buy, will take place at John Higgins Contemporary Silver in Lindfield, Haywards Heath, from 7th to 17th June.

Now in its third year, British Silver Week is aiming to promote contemporary British silversmithing to an even wider audience in 2010. This year, there will be more than 15 selling events held in galleries and specialist shops across the UK, taking place from 7 June. Every exhibition will give the public the rare chance to see the best in British design talent using one of the most precious of metals, silver.

parks, the leading children’s medical research charity, will be the official charity of the Goodwood Duathlon, taking place at the Goodwood Motor Circuit, Chichester, on a Sunday in May. BBC TV presenter Kate Silverton (pictured right), a Sparks Ambassador who has competed in Triathlons for the charity, said: “I’m delighted that Sparks has been chosen as the official charity of the Goodwood Duathlon. It represents a perfect fit with the charity’s sporting heritage and dedication to raising vitally-needed funding for children’s medical research....” A Duathlon combines a run, followed by a cycle ride, followed by a second run. The new event is set to attract more than 1,000 runners and cyclists from all over the South East of England and farther afield. The event is ideal for anyone wanting a fitness challenge with a difference as it offers a three month period for training, combining two complementary disciplines. Either a ‘Classic’ distance of run 10km, bike 40km, run a final 5km, or a ‘Half ’ distance of run 4km, bike 20km, run 4km can be completed by Goodwood competitors. This makes it

suitable for people with a range of fitness levels – especially as entrants can tackle the challenge as a two or three person relay team. The Duathlon is run on the famous circuit itself and surrounding roads that will be closed to traffic for optimum safety. The route runs past Goodwood Racecourse and offers spectacular views over the Channel before descending through the Goodwood Estate, passing Goodwood House. Sparks is funding a major research project involving Brighton and Sussex Medical School which seeks to investigate why some children develop eczema and others do not, as well as a study with the University of Sussex to develop new therapies for meningococcal ‘blood poisoning’. High profile Sparks supporters include Martin Johnson CBE, Chris Hollins, Natalie Pinkham, Sir Matthew Pinsent, Lawrence Dallaglio, Colin Montgomerie OBE, Matt Dawson, Julia Bradbury and Gabby and Kenny Logan. Helping entrepreneurs through the recovery

E

ntrepreneurs are still nervous of the economic conditions. They realise that the strong temptation to capture market share while competitors are fainting and failing about them, must be moderated by the continuing constraints on human capital and working capital within their business. Post-recession recovery holds as many dangers for the entrepreneur as recession itself. However, the past eighteen months have changed their personal wealth strategy in a number of ways. It reminds them that exitstrategies are fragile, and that injecting every penny of their personal wealth into a business may not be the wisest move. Furthermore, I have found entrepreneurs much more willing to consider utilising spare cash balances across the wealth management spectrum, investing in balanced portfolios and fund of hedge funds, as well as investment property (buy-to-let), business angel investing and more esoteric investment opportunities. This is driven by three themes: the poor cash rates available, the sense that markets are a reasonable medium-term bet, and a desire to diversify their personal wealth. They are bored with having deposits sitting with five to ten retail banks - and irritated that they had to undertake such a time-wasting endeavour. They are looking to consolidate and are in search of someone they trust. Three particular themes seem evident. Entrepreneurs have been reminded of the mortality of enterprise and are therefore more willing to spend some of their precious time in

72

thinking how they protect their family. Updating wills, thinking about business protection and personal insurance, considering how they might build a pension pot for their spouse (through employing them in the business) and inheritance tax planning has moved higher up their agenda. Secondly, they are deeply unsettled by the sense that Government is not on the side of the entrepreneur, whilst, at the same time, hearing them proclaim that economic recovery is the entrepreneur’s gift to the country. The 50% top rate of income tax (42.5% for dividends), the proposed increase in National Insurance in 2011 and fears of a hike in capital gains tax, are all perceived as disincentives to the entrepreneurs’ cause, although the increase in CGT relief to £2 million for entrepreneurs is not unwelcome. Tax

“Post-recession recovery holds as many dangers for the entrepreneur as recession itself. However, the past eighteen months have changed their personal wealth strategy in a number of ways.”

planning has become high on their agenda, too, maximising their family’s potential entrepreneur relief (and maybe this will see the growth of a new generation of family businesses) as well as considering the role of director’s loans, dividend policies, and searching for capital gains in preference to income. It is a busy time for advisers and wealth managers, with so much change and uncertainty in the air. And finally, there seems a very marked interest in social enterprise. More traditional philanthropy often has less appeal to the entrepreneur than investing in, and even grand-fathering, a commercial enterprise to benefit a social cause. Coutts aims not only to be viewed as the leading provider of financial services to Britain’s entrepreneurs and their businesses, but a champion for their cause and an authority in this field. So many questions and considerations; what we have learned through our long history is that having substantial amounts of wealth doesn’t actually mean a problem-free life - just a different set of issues to deal with. At Coutts, the experienced teams of Private Bankers have built up expertise in dealing with clients in such situations and are able to work closely with individuals and families to help them through what can be a challenging time. SME Risk Management Beware the Utility Contract Trap

T

his month I am returning to the theme of cost control with a strong recommendation to all businesses to check very carefully the terms and conditions of all their utility contracts. Many businesses have been caught out by the practice of the Big Six utility companies, automatically ‘rolling over’ contracts for two years at a higher tariff. This is not noticed until the next bill arrives and you find you are paying significantly more for your gas or electricity! You contact your utility supplier only to be told that they sent you a contract renewal letter 90 to 120 days before the end date of your existing contract and that you are now contractually committed for another two years. The utility companies will have issued this contract renewal letter along with the normal bill sent to your accounts department. Usually they do not recognise its legal importance and it is often ignored as just some additional marketing material. Unfortunately, unless you had responded in writing cancelling your contract within a specified time period there is nothing you can do about it. This is a clever way for the utility companies

ABSOLUTE BUSINESS MATTERS by Roger Clifton-Moore, MD of RMI

to retain your business and they are very rigid about applying the contract terms and conditions irrespective of the size or type of your company. I am currently working with a charity which has been significantly caught out by this automatic contract renewal process. They provide housing and day centres for people with learning difficulties and have a large portfolio of properties. They missed the contract renewal letter for six of their properties at the end of last year only to find that the contracts not only had ‘rolled over’ but with an increased tariff of 71%! Even though they are a charity and can ill afford this significant cost increase the utility company concerned has refused to compromise. I have introduced this charity, as well as other companies, to an energy broker who will manage their energy contracts, ensure they get a much better deal in the future and will also arrange, over time, that all their energy contracts have the same contract review date. This will not only make the contact administration easier but also put them in a much better position to negotiate competitive tariffs at renewal time.

Fund raising event for Haiti is a resounding success

Savings of 20% or more are often achievable! The management of your utility costs is very important no matter what size of business you are. My advice to you all is to: • contact your current supplier • establish exactly when is your current contract end date • establish when the contract review period is • always go out to tender to your existing and other utility companies for a competitive quote. Getting the best energy deal, particularly for larger users or business with multiple contracts, is often a complex and lengthy process – it is not just about using an internet comparison site. If you wish further advice regarding this issue please email or contact me.

SHOREHAM BATTLE OF BRITAIN AIRSHOW INVITATION TO VETERANS AREA

ourteen-year-old Fran Pearson (left), of Rottingdean, used his skills as a young aspiring talent manager to raise money for those still suffering in Haiti. The event was held at The Latest Music Bar in Brighton, who supported his dedication by donating the venue and staff gratis as part of their donation to the Haiti fund, and to support passionate dedicated youngsters. Fran organised three of his acts to perform on the evening: Sammy Jones - illusionist/magician, Conor Maynard - soloist/songwriter and the band Never Ending Weekend. All of the entertainers were under 18 years of age, and all have incredible talent. Half of the proceeds from the ticket sales were donated to the Haiti fund, and local businesses donated wonderful prizes for the raffle, the proceeds of which were also donated to the fund. A total of £450 was raised from the evening.

A

s in previous years veterans of all Armed Services are invited into the ‘Veterans Area’ at the Royal Air Forces Battle of Britain Airshow at Shoreham Airport, on 21st and 22nd August. To be considered for this area will you please make your application in writing to: The RAFA, Airshow Office, Shoreham Airport, West Sussex, BN43 5FF (marking the envelope ‘Veteran’), stating your service number, rank, in which armed unit you served, also when and where. Closing date for these applications will be Saturday 10th July 2010. Each lucky person drawn will receive a ticket along with another for a companion. You will be looked after in style in a special

garden area with a marquee situated on the flight line. Morning coffee, a buffet lunch with wine or beer will be served to all. There will be a reserved car park with transport to and from the area. Each year this area has been well oversubscribed and it has therefore been decided that as it is the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain, veterans from that era will have preference, followed by those who have not attended before.
