Yes, once again here we are with a bustling March issue jam-packed with topics that I hope will warm your cockles through the damp days that we’re suffering as I write this… ‘Rain is great for the garden though,’ I hear you green-fingered people bellow. And yes, I understand that, and I do myself love my garden (my secret salvation). However, to me the rain does nothing but turn me, my family and friends into hermits; everyone simply stays indoors the whole time, except for running from house to car to work/school/college and home again (while looking like drowned rats)! For me, it’s that time of the year when I yearn (and I mean yearn) for the summer sunshine (or even spring sunshine would be nice.) I am sure I am not alone. So, it was with pleasure that I read our feature on gardens this month, about how to prepare for the summer blooms (so it must be nearing). Apparently, March is the all-important month in the world of gardening for preparing the garden, and sowing those seeds and bulbs that we’ll see bloom in the not-too-distant future spring and summer months. (Page 24) In fact, this month we have gone blooming mad; to coincide with our planning a garden feature, we are also introducing a new gardening section that will grace our pages each month. So whether you are a green-fingered person yourself, or simply want to learn a bit about gardening, I think you’ll enjoy this light-hearted new addition to Absolute Brighton. (Page 30) Talking of gardening, someone who I remember hearing interviewed on the radio earlier this year, who surprised me for being a keen gardener at her countryside home, is loud enthusiastic Big Brother presenter Davina McCall. Danny Masters managed to meet the busy presenter, who’s become one of the biggest names in British television, and asked her who her favourite Big Brother contestants have been, what she thought about this years celebrity series and how she feels about 2010 being the last year for the fly-on-the-wall game show. (Page 22) This month, we also couldn’t resist taking a peak at the recently launched, tallest in the world, tower block in Dubai, The ‘Burj Khalifa. Yes, Dubai has done it again! Apparently, an estimated 400,000 excited spectators from all over the world looked on in amazement as the official launch party burst in to action with fireworks and projectors cascading from the towers spire. The tower looks truly magnificent (but not one for the vertigo inclined, being 828 metres high!) (Page 54) Enjoy your read, and see you in April!

March Absolute Celeb of the month

Sigourney Weaver has graced Hollywood screens since the 70s, mostly appearing in science fiction alien based films. She’s currently starring in James Cameron’s latest blockbuster Avatar, the highest grossing film in history. At the age of 60, we think that Sigourney is looking her most elegant yet. Appearing for the film premiere of Avatar recently at LA, we think Ms Weaver looked stunning yet natural and understated, oozing confidence in her own skin; maybe that’s the key to true beauty. Sigourney, you’re our celebrity of the month!

ABSOLUTE FASHION

End of a fashion era The fashion world recently lost one of its most exciting designers. Absolute Brighton pays tribute to Alexander McQueen

B

orn Lee Alexander McQueen on 16th March 1969, son of a teacher and a taxi driver, Alexander McQueen became a British superstar fashion designer the world over, as a pioneer to British fashion. From his humble background came a hard working ethic. Upon leaving school, aged 16, McQueen served apprenticeships at tailors along Savile Row. It was while on Savile Row, that McQueen started tailoring for the elite; McQueen’s clients included Mikhail Gorbachev and Prince Charles. McQueen once famously recounted during an interview that he wrote a lurid remark about Prince Charles in biro into the lining of a jacket he was working on for the Prince. Within a short period of time working at Savile Row, the young fashionista was creating his Above: With his beloved mother own tailored designs, which quickly gave him a reputation in the fashion world for creating impeccably tailored looks. The designer went on to, and graduated from, London’s prestigious Central St. Martins in 1995, and soon after was headhunted to become the head designer at Givenchy. He later launched his eponymous label in 2001. It was world-renowned Vogue stylist Isabella Blow, who bought his entire collection from his graduation; he became her protégé (it was Isabella who in fact persuaded the designer named Lee to use his middle name Alexander, insisting it sounded more aristocratic.) His designs for men and women stunned the fashion world; he distinguished himself with his brand of dramatic tailoring, groundbreaking collections and avant-garde shows. Even though Alexander became a celebrity in his own right, the crazy world and people it brought with it didn’t faze him; his family kept him grounded and focused on his work. But as well as a hard-working ethic, his tight-knit family also gave him a closeness compared to no other which sadly became a factor for his death; the death of his mother was just too much pain for the successful designer to suffer. Fashion has lost one of its leading talents, Britain has lost one of its most pioneering fashion designers, and at the age of 40, and with what would have been another groundbreaking catwalk show in Paris this March, he still had so much to offer. He will be greatly missed.

Katie Price was still badly shaken by being booed as the audience watched her in a clip of I’m a Celebrity...’ at the National Television Awards. “She was visibly shaking - like shivering and weeping,” said an insider. “She spent quite a number of minutes in the powder room desperately trying to compose herself.” Katie, AKA Jordan, then had the humiliation of hearing boos and hisses, seated as she was in the Channel 4 Green Room from the public, as boyfriend Alex Reid (victorious on being crowned winner of CBB 2010) uttered her name. Davina begged them, “Oh come on, she’s his girlfriend.” Our mole said Katie was a whiter shade of pale, shocked at her public demise. What’s next? well a friend says Katie Price has now decided to take a step back as she plans her next move to rekindle her place in the public eye. “I think she’ll plan on doing some kind of charity work,” said our mole. “She’s keen not to make any more mistakes such as entering into anymore celebrity reality shows right now.”

Depp pinches himself - daily! Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland actor Johnny Depp joked the other day that he has to check the obituary pages now just to check he’s still alive, following yet another internet hoax saying he’d been killed in a fatal car crash. “I once read that the old actor and comic Milton Berle used to check the obit pages over breakfast to check he was still breathing, and with one story after another about my own mortality, I feel it’s a positive way to start the day.”

Life’s a cabaret for Liza

Things are looking up for Liza Minnelli. The veteran singer and daughter of Wizard of Oz legend Judy Garland has signed for a re-occurring role in the US hit TV show, Ugly Betty playing Lena Korvinka, a high school drama teacher at Justin’s (played by Mark Indelicato) school. “I’m going to inject lots of elements of women I knew in Hollywood growing up,” said Liza, who recently won praise for her role as Lucille 2 on Arrested Development. “I’m so excited, the show’s great – I’m going to have fun!”

What’s next for reality stars?

Jedward have a dream. The X-

Factor runners up would like to perform at the Academy Awards. “It would be great to sing one of the nominated songs and dance,” the duo tells me. “We don’t want to disappear.” Meanwhile former BB contestant and event organizer Siavash Sabbaghpour took drastic attempts for attention at LCF’s Master’s show at the V&A the other night, wearing a dinner jacket with candle-wax pouring down the selves and two tapered candles lit on his shoulder pads. Nicky Hasalm said, “Now I’ve seen it all.” Finally, former Pop Idol star Darius is taking the ultimate step for a Z-lister and changing his name! The star of Trevor Nunn’s disastrous musical adaptation of Gone With the Wind and

Pop Star to Opera Star contestant wants to be known now as Darius Campbell. Let’s hope it brings him some luck.

Prince takes away Gabor’s glam

Friends and family, including Paris Hilton, have criticised Frederic Prinz von Anhalt for allowing his frail wheelchair-bound wife Zsa Zsa Gabor out in public, minus a trip to the hairdresser. Gabor, 93, was snapped wrapped in a gargantuan red scarf and matching baseball cap during a routine visit to a health care facility in Los Angeles. “She always had the most beautifully coiuffured hair and loved her make-up. I don’t understand why the Prince wouldn’t have made sure she looked her glamourous old self when out in public,” said Zsa Zsa’s shocked greatniece Hilton Hotel heiress Paris. Another friend of the former movie star added, “I’ve never seen darling Zsa Zsa Gabor looking so bare, not even a slash of red lipstick and no jewels – amazing, and so cruel!” Once the toast of Tinsel Town, the much married socialite and star of Moulin Rouge (1952) and Queen of Outer Space (1958) withdrew from the limelight after a stroke in 2005. More recently, to dispel rumours that her husband was keeping her prisoner and away from her friends, Prince Anhalt agreed to a photo spread and feature in Vanity Fair. The shoot showed Zsa Zsa looking her old exquisite self in Chanel, diamonds and killer heels.

Goodbye February. It’s not you, it’s me. I’ve met another month. March has charmed its way into our sights with whispers of sparkling mornings and gentle nights. Whispers are sketchy things at best though, and seeing is believing… My wife and I were invited along by Ambrose Harcourt, Juice FM DJ aka Mr Lurve, to the party for Dr. Bruno Silva and his wife Angelina at their swish Brighton Dental Implant Clinic at 12 Church Road, Hove. A crowded and animated reception room full of Brightonians and Hoveites was spoiled with trays of delightful a bouche and plied with endless wines and Champagne, as we toasted Dr. Silva and his staff on their Private Dentistry Award for Best New Practice 2009. We were of course given tours of the clinics consultation rooms where I believe we saw some of the most spaceaged dental implant equipment in the UK. The Henson Swing Band entertained as I caught up with businesswoman Soozie Campbell, television presenter Anita Ellison and very busy entrepreneur Mike Holland, who described the ongoing developments at the Hove Engineerium as ‘exciting.’ Keeping with things undergoing overhauls, I’ve also been back to visit the folks at Brighton’s discreet beauty clinic A New You on Queens Road where I was introduced to the wonders of ‘Genuine Dermaroller Therapy’ (the must-have treatment that I mentioned in my previous column). It’s a marvel for those with an older(ish!) skin and especially anyone with marks or imperfections that they’d rather kiss goodbye to. Only 40 clinics nationwide offer this skin resurfacing procedure that has become the rage of the fashion and entertainment world. With little or no down time and lasting a relatively painless 20 or so minutes, your skin is worked over with a device studded with scores of tiny needles designed to concentrate depleted collagen deposits and return a freshness and youthful elasticity to your face. Chemical peels and raw, red faces are now a thing of the past! There’s a bonus with a trip to A New You too… The ground floor is occupied by Dental Health Spa, another gleaming dental practice offering an extensive range of dentistry including the in-house Zoom Teeth Whitening that assures you a bright white Hollywood smile in no time at all. I’m a squeamish dental patient at the best of times, but their sleek offices and state-of-the-art equipment and the calm, collected and friendly nature of the owner practitioner, Christine, chilled me out wonderfully as I was treated to a pre-spring smile upgrade! All this pampering has seen me in good stead as I’ve put my best face forward for several weeks of soirees including a dressy night in the private function rooms at MyHotel, celebrating the Vice President of McAfee, Paul Parke’s, 40th birthday. On a naughty note: I hear whispers via my good friend, Our Lady of Hove, (Debs Lewis of NYC’s /UK’s Big Machine Media) that while representing her Hollywood actor client Stephen Baldwin, of recent Celebrity Big Brother fame, apparently Ivana Trump’s ‘late’ entry to the Big Brother house was due to her being AWOL for four days… someone might have a vodka drink problem. Can canapés be the first rung of socialite hell?

ABSOLUTE INTERVIEW

Brother, she’s good!

She’s the loud, brash presenter of Big Brother and has become one of the UKs most popular names on television. So what makes the public yearn for more of Davina McCall? Danny Masters finds out

22

ABSOLUTE

17/2/10 16:36:08

ABSOLUTE INTERVIEW “I don’t think any impersonation is insulting... And I think sometimes it’s really healthy to have a laugh at yourself.” Who would be in your dream line-up of Celebrity Big Brother housemates? I like a bit of controversy so Tiger Woods, Jordan and Lindsay Lohan would make things interesting. I like people who are a bit dark and mysterious so you can chuck Robbie Williams and George Michael in there too. It would be fascinating to see what makes them tick.

Davina, who’s been your favourite ever Celebrity Big Brother contestant? George Galloway gave me some of my favourite moments. He was amazing. It made for hysterical TV when he pretended to be a cat and lapped at the saucer of milk! But Coolio and La Toya Jackson were great too. And I also enjoyed watching Pete Burns. Were you surprised Alex Reid won this year’s show? The great thing about Big Brother is that you never know who’s going to shine because you get to see so many different sides of people. I was really pleased that Alex won because he’d been on a huge journey in that house. He’s a sweet guy with not a bad bone in his body and I think that came across to viewers. Vinnie Jones called him a loveable prat which was a bit harsh but there’s something in that! How did it feel actually going into the house (Davina entered disguised in a chicken costume)? It was incredibly exciting but once I got in there, it was actually very scary. Even though I wasn’t allowed to say anything I knew they were going to suss I wasn’t Nicola (underneath the costume, Davina was pretending to be page 3 model Nicola T) because I’m double the width of her! I think the housemates were threatened by me and so they became quite menacing. Luckily Jonas took pity on me and I’ll be eternally grateful for that. Who else surprised you in the house? Dane turned out to be a really nice down to earth guy. And I was genuinely surprised at how lovely his voice is. What would be your price to become a Celebrity Big Brother housemate? There isn’t enough money in the world because Matthew my husband simply wouldn’t let me do it! And I’d miss my children too much.

How do you feel about Big Brother ending next year?
Obviously it’s disappointing and I know I will really miss it, but I’m coming to terms with it now. I was a real mess when it was first announced but I’m feeling a bit more accepting of it. I’m really glad we’ve been given a year to go out with a bang.

Were you surprised by the decision to axe it? Yes I was a bit. It still does great business for Channel 4 but I accept viewing figures have dropped off. It’s been controversial and it must have been hard for Channel 4 to take the flack that they have over the years. Everything comes to a natural end and this is probably the nicest way that it could have happened. Who was the first TV personality you fancied? Donny Osmond. When I was 9, I would touch the TV whenever he was on and burst into tears. I was besotted with him. I met him a few years ago when I had to entertain all these celebrities on a train during the launch of MTV Europe. Unfortunately I was dressed up as a cleaning lady with purple lipstick on my teeth. But he still looked good and was an out and out nice guy with a good heart. You recently hosted Sky’s Got to Dance. Are you a good dancer yourself? I’m okay, but rather than a good dancer I’d say I’m a really enthusiastic dancer. I love it. When I was young I used to dance on stage in clubs. I used to be so trolleyed I can’t remember whether I was any good or not. How’s the training for your mammoth Sport Relief bike ride going? It’s difficult trying to fit it into my hectic routine but it’s going okay. I’ve already got saddle sore from the exercise bike! But it’s something I’m going to put everything into because we aim to raise a £1 million for Sport Relief. What do you think of Debra Stephenson’s impression of you on the The Impressions Show? I honestly thought it was hysterically funny! The

Davina and her husband Matthew

awful thing is I’m turning into Debra Stephenson. I am becoming her impression of me. I find myself doing things like doubling up and I think ‘oh God I look just like Debra Stephenson.’ The most amazing sketch was where she was playing me reading a fairy story. Even my husband thought it was spot-on. Weren’t you just a teeny bit insulted? Of course not. I don’t think any impersonation is insulting. It’s just having a laugh isn’t it? And I think sometimes it’s really healthy to have a laugh at yourself. Besides, I know Debra, and she’s really lovely. When you’re not on telly, what shows do you watch? I really love The Wire – it’s dark, edgy and utterly addictive. But at the other end of the scale I’m also a sucker for Casualty. It’s an easy watch but so involving. I also love House because I think Hugh Laurie is absolutely gorgeous. But I also end up watching Hannah Montana with the kids and have to admit I do secretly enjoy it. What internet sites do you use most? I’m forever idly browsing You Tube but I also spend lots of time buying gifts on highstreet.com, amazon and thewhitecompany.com Do you ever google yourself? Spring into summer After a terrible winter, we are all hoping for a good summer, so start now to get the most enjoyment from your garden

T

he secret in creating a beautiful garden is its design and lay-out. Whether you have a large garden space, or just a few square feet, you can always create something beautiful. If you have a design that fits the amount of space that you have, you can always create a magical garden, even in a closet size space. Creating your beautiful garden is not really an easy task. You can’t just get some seeds and cuttings of plants, put them in the soil and hope that everything will turn out perfectly. To be able to create a beautiful garden, you need to invest a lot of time, effort and, or course, money. To help you create a beautiful garden with the space that you have, here are some tips. Planning and Designing Your Garden Measure the available space that you have. Once you have measured your area, draw a design that will fit into that space. To help you design your beautiful garden, buy some magazines and books about gardening. Select a beautiful garden design and work on it. If possible, use a garden design and lay-out that is intended for the same space as your own available plot. If working with a small space, and you cannot find a good design that fits your area, you may choose a garden design that is good for larger gardens and just reduce the scale of the design to fit your small space. However, be very careful about down scaling designs that are intended for bigger gardens because you might end up with an overly crowded garden with plants growing out of proportion. With a limited space for your beautiful garden, choose simple designs 24

and use plants that do not really grow big. If you are planning on using ornamental plants in your garden, choose those types that only grow a few centimetres. Using pots will help you add more plants in your garden. Decorative pots can also enhance the look of your garden. To maximize whatever space you have, use some iron racks to hold your pots. Container gardening If you have designed your garden in such a way that you have areas of paving or gravel, you may want to liven these up with some well-planted containers. Or if your garden space is very small, some strategically placed pots full of colourful flowers may be what you need. Choosing Your Containers Pots are an obvious place to start. They come in all shapes and sizes, glazed, terracotta, hand-painted, stone, plaster etc. If you intend to leave your pots outside all winter, don’t forget they must be frost resistant. Troughs look good against a straight wall but you need to choose your planting carefully because many plants quickly become pot bound in a trough. Wooden containers You can buy these or make them yourself if you have the skill and you can add a trellis for something to climb up the centre. You can use small split logs for a rustic effect or normal wooden planks for something a little more formal. Don’t forget to leave drainage holes. The wood will last longer if you apply a wood preservative and line your container with plastic. Many wood preservers are coloured these days so your

ABSOLUTE EXTERIORS container could be blue or green or whatever you like. The easiest to construct is obviously square, but if you’re a little more adventurous, you could try octagonal or triangular. Divided containers are great for growing herbs. Hanging baskets Wall hanging half baskets or pots are lovely for trailing plants and can create quite a show in summer. Basket-shaped or amphora-shaped pots look great but are quite hard to plant and maintain. If you have a talent for construction, you could build your own pots or raised beds with bricks or decorative blocks. Planting in pots There are so many different plants suitable for container gardening. Annuals are great for containers but will need to have the spent flowers removed to encourage further blooming. Herbs and alpines are good too but be careful of the sun/shade needed. Be careful also of herbs like mint which can take over a whole flower bed, never mind a pot, left to its own devices! Unlike, traditional borders, container plants are planted very close together so you need to bear a number of things in mind: Buy good compost. Garden borders can, to an extent, obtain nutrients from the soil itself plus leaf mulch and other naturally-occurring organic matter. Containers cannot so buy the best compost you can afford. Container plants need more water. Don’t think that just because it rained all day, much moisture will have penetrated the foliage - it probably won’t. In the height of summer, hanging baskets and the like (unless they have a water reservoir) will probably need watering twice a day. So set up an irrigation system for your pots (good option but pricey) or add a moisture retaining product to your compost (you will still need to water once a day). You will need to feed container plants more often. You can choose a compost which has already had sufficient nutrients added to last a season which is a good start for annuals. You can also buy slow-release pellets which you mix into the compost in the dosage recommended by the manufacturer. The alternative is to apply a liquid feed once or twice every two weeks

Flowers to plant in March Rhododendron ‘Mothers Day’ This wonderful evergreen azalea bears masses of small, funnelshaped, semi-double, bright red flowers. Camellia ‘Anticipation’ Few plants can equal the camellia for sheer beauty. It is a compact camellia that’s perfect for growing in a container or for smaller gardens. Forsythia ‘Lynwood’ If you are a fan of forsythia choose ‘Lynwood’ because it is the most generous variety as far as flowering is concerned. Clematis armandii Delicious almond-scented, star-shaped, creamy-white, early spring flowers. Osmanthus delavayi Enjoy masses of scented, white jasmine-like flowers. Magnolia ‘Heaven Scent’ Magnificent goblet-shaped flowers up to 12cm (5in) across that are white inside, pink on the outside and wonderfully scented.

INTRODUCING A NEW REGULAR FEATURE FOR THOSE WITH GREEN FINGERS, OR THOSE WHO WOULD LIKE TO BECOME MORE INTERESTED IN THE WONDERS OF THE GARDEN

Mum’s the word in the garden A

s we celebrate Mother’s Day this month it might be worth mentioning that according to a study conducted by the University of Northumbria, women are genetically predisposed to gardening thanks to an evolutionary divergence that had women ‘gathering’ whilst prehistoric menfolk ‘hunted’. Women may also make the best plant people because they have better colour recall than men, and recent research from the RHS has shown that women gardeners’ voices speed up growth of tomato plants much more than men’s. Coupled with the fact that 15% of the hours the average household devotes to work in the home is spent on gardening it is hardly surprising that a lot of gardening knowledge and expertise is handed down from mother to daughter. Mother’s Day, traditionally known as Mothering Sunday, was a day identified by wealthy employers and the aristocracy during the 1600s for domestic servant girls to take off work to visit their families and in particular their mothers. Celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent, the servants and apprentices would bake cakes and make gifts or presents and collect flowers to make their mother’s day. A rose by any other name Due to its timing, most flowers and plants associated with Mother’s Day are those that bloom in early spring such as daffodils and tulips although roses have grown in popularity. If you’re thinking of giving a plant as a gift you could always try one of these suitably named roses - My Mum, a profusion of fragrant scarlet blooms or Granny’s Favourite, a beautiful little patio rose, with masses of golden peach coloured flowers. Alternatively, if your Mum is your gardening guru, then perhaps some National Garden Gift Vouchers which allow her to choose her own gift. In addition to Mother’s Day, March is the month that things get going in the garden. Rake out moss and dead grass from the lawn and start mowing and divide perennials, like hostas and asters, so they

grow bigger and better by being divided in half and replanted. Check if plants in pots have become root-bound and if they have, re-pot them and freshen up the compost by scraping away the top layer and adding some new. Clean out any bedraggled or dead plants in borders and treat yourself to some spring bedding like primulas, forget-me-nots, wallflowers and pansies to fill in the gaps. Mature and versatile March is also a good planting time for more mature plants, such as the versatile, evergreen Hebe. Named after the Greek Goddess of Youth and originally from New Zealand, Hebes like well-drained soil and partial shade so are ideal for a number of garden locations. There are over a 100 species of Hebe to choose from, everything from dwarf varieties that look great on patios or in pots to larger plants that really thrive in any size garden. In addition to a range of colourful leaves, from green and silver to bronze and red, Hebes really come into their own during summer. They can take long dry weather and still look beautiful, blossom profusely and are excellent at attracting butterflies. One of the most popular is Hebe Petra’s Pink – the first ever small-leaved hebe with pink flowers. It’s a low spreading shrub with dark green oval leaves that are tinted and edged with purple and light mauve-pink flowers.

ABSOLUTE BEAUTY

Full bodied Celebrity steal their style It’s officially Spring, and even if the weather is still rainy and dull, there is so much to look forward to. I’ve had lots of you in the salon preparing for your weddings so I wanted to give you all some inspiration though my most recent style crush, the lovely Zooey Deshchanel. This Rom-Com beauty was recently married to her beau. Now, I think that everyone should be taking their wedding trends from actresses such as Zooey, who often frequents the red carpet and has stunning looks created on a regular basis; it’s the first place to look for inspiration. Now this is a classic look that’s gorgeous and sophisticated, plus with careful accessorizing it can be made all your own, perfect! Firstly wash your hair in the morning and wait for a few hours before styling so that hair isn’t too fly away and is easier to pin up when it comes to styling. Dry hair into sections using a powerful dryer such as the Alter Ego (£109.99) and once dry, section hair again using a tail comb to separate the top of the crown area. Gently backcomb this top section for some extra volume and smooth the sides down with a natural bristle brush while securing with grips. Take the ends, twist into a roll and secure again to creative a miniature beehive. Now, dry your fringe using a big barrel brush for added oomph, and mist with a super light finishing spray such as the Shu Uemura Art of Hair Sheer Laquer (£15.50) to hold the fringe in place. After having previously shopped around for the perfect accessory to suit your style, pin this either at the back of the mini beehive, to the side or around the back of the head, wherever you feel most comfortable, and remember that this is your big day! So as important as it is to take inspiration from the catwalk and celebrities who you’d love to be styled like, you need to remember your colourings, the dress and also what is going to make you feel the most comfortable. Always test the look out a week before, and speak to a stylist in order to ensure that the style you want is achievable and going to suit you!

Essential products to maintain this look

The Alter Ego hairdryer (£109.99) is the ultimate tool for creating beautiful hair, with its HW2 technology that promises to improve hair quality and manageability in next to no time at all. The dryer has 8 heat and speed settings to enable you to create various different styles and looks at home. It even has a 10 foot swivel cord giving you more freedom when blow drying! This microscopically fine hairspray is the essential tool in creating lust-have locks. The last thing anyone wants is for their hair to become stiff or look as though it’s full of product! Sheer Laquer (£15.50) from Shu Uemura’s Art of Hair range will give your locks fluidity and movement while keeping them in place throughout any event.

LETTER OF THE MONTH Just recently my hair has become very static. How can I tame my tresses and stop it looking like I’ve been electrocuted? Static is one cause of a bad hair day that a lot of women aren’t sure exactly how to combat and I know a couple of tricks that will help to solve the problem. There is a lack of moisture in your hair, so it’s important to change to a moisturizing shampoo such as Kerastase Nutritive’s Bain Oleo-Relax shampoo for dry and rebellious hair, that will smooth the hair cuticle and give you some anti-frizz protection. This will result in longerlasting volume control and your hair will be left silky and nourished. It’s also important to treat your hair to an intensive mask once a week, not just in the winter, such as the Masque Oleo-Relax from Kerastase which has specific antic frizz properties to prevent the hair from becoming unmanageable in humid environments. Just use 1 – 2 walnut sized amounts on towel dried hair, leave for 5-10 minutes and rinse out thoroughly. Properly moisturized hair is less likely to be affected by static, but using a wooden brush will also help to stop you looking as though you have just stuck your finger in a plug socket. Wood and natural bristle won’t charge as easily as a synthetic material, so try a Denman D32M which will leave hair smooth and less likely to cause static. Finish off after styling with a serum rather than hairspray as this will dry the hair out and I wouldn’t want all of time you’ll be taking using these treatments to be put at risk by the finishing touch!

HAIR HOW-TOS THE BRIT AWARDS 2010

To achieve the hottest hairstyles from this year’s Brit Awards, follow Mahogany’s Richard Thompson’s hair how-tos

F

earne Cotton (left) looked very on-trend with her textured side-plait, as seen at the Alexander Wang show. Her playful hairstyle complimented her polka-dot dress and flirtatious nature. To create this look, dry hair upside down and use S4U t’xT to smooth hair and build volume. Then gather hair to one side and loosely plait (so the plait is thick rather than tight and thin), fastening the ends with an elastic band to match the hair. To loosen the whole shape further, pull out the fringe and clip back, leaving tendrils to fall down. Finally, use a Mason and Pearson brush to smooth down the hair in the front section and apply S4U FX’D hairspray to hold the style in place. Geri Halliwell (right) sported Grecian goddess at this year’s Brit Awards with her tousled hair and white one shoulder dress. To achieve this style rub S4U t’xT volumising gel into wet hair and dry upside down to create volume at the roots. To create the loose curls, section the hair into

B0310_033 BEAUTY_ADS.indd 1

roughly one inch sections and use Cloud Nine straightening irons. Apply the irons to the base of each section and turn them 90˚ at the roots, then slowly pull the irons along the hair and twist with your finger when you reach the end. Apply S4U FX’D hairspray to finish curls for hold and shine. Ke$ha (above right) left the surfer look at home and arrived as rock-chick with loose curls and dark glittery eyes. This look would have been achieved using the natural texture in the hair to create a an unkempt look. Rub S4U t’xT volumising gel into the roots of the hair to give hold and create volume. Then comb through the hair and use a diffuser to dry the hair off, tipping the head upside down to give volume at roots. Finish off with Alfaparf Diamond Crystals serum to create the shape required as it is lightweight, non-sticky and creates a mirror-like shine. S4U is available from Mahogany salons nationwide or online at www.mahoganyhair.co.uk

NAIL THE BASICS Nail know-how and easy maintenance for the perfect 10 Banish those winter blues and shift your focus to a softer more romantic mood. Get ready for this season’s beautiful nail polish treats, in elegant nudes, shimmering browns and fun candy shades that are uplifting and fun. Whether you favour simplicity and convention or are a fan of the bold creatives, like Lady Gaga, the basics remain the same. Barely-there nails are just one of the huge on-trends for this spring, so lets get back to basics in preparation.

ABSOLUTE MAKE-UP

Sassy spring flavours! 1. Nubar - Nubar is one of my absolute favourite brands. It goes on effortlessly, dries fast and shines beautifully. Indulge in these guilt-free treats, a healthy alternative for your nails. It is carcinogen-free and suitable for vegetarians and vegans, not to mention a celebrity favourite including Scarlett Johansson and Cheryl Cole. Available from www.beautyshed.co.uk priced £8 each. 2. iIlamasque - The new ‘must have make-up range’ now brings us these beautiful pastel polish shades in Blow, Nudge, Caress and Wink. Available from www.illamasqua.com priced £13.00 3. Chanel – Le Vernis Nail Spring 2010 Collection delivers the ultimate manicure statement with new, impossibly chic shades. Discover: Inattendu, a sun-warmed beige; Tendresse, a delicate pink; and Particulière, a cool, dusky grey. Available at Boots priced £12.42

For best results, time your manicure for after bath time, when your cuticles are perfectly softened and your nails are clean. Begin by massaging a cuticle oil into the area surrounding the nail bed and around the sides to soften. Wrap a swipe of cotton wool around the end of an orange-wood stick, then gently work back the cuticles to reveal the half moons – do not clip your cuticles as this skin is there to protect, and is a barrier against infection, so gently does it. The most flattering nail ‘tip’ shape for your finger is one that mirrors the shape of your natural nail bed, so that in appearance it looks balanced and even. This would normally be a rounded square or an oval shape. Using a fine emery board, gently file each nail in one direction toward the tip on each side until you reach the desired shape. It is important to run a buffer over the freshly filed edges to ‘re-seal’ the nail from water saturation or dehydration. You can then simply leave the nail bare or apply a delicate pastel shade such as my all-time

34

favourite ‘French Rose’ by Rimmel. (Available at Boots. Priced £4.49) This is hardwearing, easy to apply and is a barely-there shade. For nails that are stained or yellow in colour, I suggest applying a brightening base coat first. This will give your nails a clean and healthy appearance, leaving them instantly whiter and more beautiful. Try Barbara Daly’s - Goodbye Yellow. (Available from Tescos priced £3.94) This also looks great against tanned hands in the summer. For a quick and easy French manicure, use a ‘white nail pencil’ for creating an instant healthy natural looking nail, simply moisten the tip of the pencil and roll on the underside of the fingernail to colour in. It will only last through a few hand washes but can be applied on a regular basis without having to do a full manicure. Selection available from Boots. When painting your nails, aim for three thin strokes each and don’t overload your brush. Apply a fast base coat, two coats of colour, then a fine brush of top coat to seal.

4. China Glaze - The nail lacquer collection with celebrity fans such as Rihanna and Nicole Kidman, launches twelve candy coloured new polishes in their Up & Away collection with names like Peachy Keen, Something Sweet and Lemon Fizz. Who could resist? Available at www.radiantbabe-beauty.co.uk priced £6.99 5. Minx – Foil-like coverings that are applied to clean, buffed nails and only require heat lamps to seal. A glamorous way for women to extend fashion to their very fingertips. Choose from a fabulous assortment of designs ranging from flowers, fishnets even metallics. If you can think of it they’ve designed it. Minx is a firm fav with celebrities: Beyonce, Lady GaGa, Lilly Allen and Vivtoria Beckham. We ask Dr Amos what the secret to his success in Brighton has been Jeff, please describe your business to us: I run a completely private, general dental practice in the centre of Brighton, undertaking all aspects of modern dentistry. I have been placing dental implants for over 20 years and have a special interest in dental and facial aesthetics. I am still astonished by how successful we have been since opening eight years ago. Why did you choose Brighton for your business? I used to visit friends here when I lived in Manchester, and realised to my horror one Sunday afternoon that I didn’t want to go back! I’ve always liked the buzz and the tolerant attitude that pervades the town, and that suits my practicing style, which I’ve always tried to keep informal and relaxed. And it’s a bonus to be near the sea. Do you have any plans to expand? With respect to increasing the capacity of the practice: no. Patients know that they will be seeing me personally every time that they visit The Clinic, and I think that that continuity is important. People build up a valuable rapport with their dentist over time and I, in turn, keep to a consistent treatment rationale for each individual patient. I think that further expansion might damage that relationship. Please tell us about the dental services your clinic offers?

B0310_037 Jeff Amos.indd 1

Although I don’t want to alter The Clinic ‘physically’, I am always seeking to improve and increase the range of treatments that we offer. I began placing dental implants back in 1986 when the technique was in its infancy, for example, and last year we introduced Botox® and Restylane® dermal filler. I don’t see myself as a ‘cosmetic’ dentist as such because I think that nowadays all dentistry should look good. Personally, I think that the appearance of mercury amalgam fillings is unacceptable, and I use pure porcelain wherever possible for crowns and bridges as well as veneers You also offer anti-aging procedures. Which ones are available? It’s becoming a dental cliché, but a nice smile really does take years off you! When I whiten or restore a worn set of front teeth, invariably I notice that the patient will – perhaps, unconsciously – upgrade their general image also. That increase in self-esteem definitely makes people look younger. It seems to me, also, that facial enhancement techniques using products like Botox® and Restylane® go hand-inhand with what I’m trying to achieve aesthetically for dental patients. At the risk of sounding pompous, forthcoming new regulations will quite rightly move these procedures out of the tattoo parlours, beauty salons and living room parties and into the hands of registered healthcare professionals.

Are these ‘lunchtime’ procedures? For facial aesthetics patients, we offer a free, short consultation before treatment, normally followed by a 30 minute appointment - though Botox® therapy only takes a few seconds, really. With Restylane® much of the time is taken up by the wait for local anaesthetic to ‘take’. For me, this is an essential measure, particularly for lip enhancement, which can be a painful experience otherwise. So, although careful planning is required, I guess that the treatment itself can be done during a lunch break. And finally, how would you advise someone to seek a good reputable Dental clinic? Speaking as someone who has ‘been round the block’ a few times, I’d be looking for a combination of experience and modernity, expertise and informality. Although dentistry nowadays has a far more glamorous aspect to it than it did when I qualified, it is still a serious business with an ethical dimension. Although I enjoy my work, surroundings and my fantastic patient-base, I always try to bear that in mind. ABSOLUTE LIFE COACHING

Move on...

The Voice of Reason by Terrina Clifton-Moore and Georgina Paget Absolute Brighton Coaching “Hi Georgina and Terrina. As coaches you talk about goals and ambitions. I have many but I never do anything about them. I never seem to have any fun either. I also carry a lot of anger towards my previous partner - I guess you would say that holds me back. How would you help me?” Mike, Hove Dear Mike The voice of reason would always say the quote: ‘a forgiving nature makes life easier’. That sounds simplistic but it’s true. You must now move on… Think of your objectives and goals, whatever terminology you use. Then go one step further and initiate the first step towards your goal; that can be an email, picking up the phone or speaking to someone. The first step is often the hardest. Be tenacious, things that are difficult to get in life are often well worth achieving. For example, think of a surfer waiting for the next big wave. Surfers are patient and excited, waiting for that wave. Your time will come too but you have to jump at the opportunity when it does, and not let it pass you by. Always tell yourself you can do it. Look at the proud peacock with its head held high. If necessary take a pass on perfection. Be as good at whatever you attempt as you can be and remember very few ever achieve perfection in life. Everyone requires fun but don’t live fun

without meaning to life. Combine the two and think of the things that make you happy; writing, skiing, tennis, movies, walking or reading a book and make time for these things in your life. Goals need to be realistic and in tune with your life. Tell yourself you can do it. Good luck. Absolute Brighton Coaching Our new web site is: www.absolutebrightonlifecoaching.co.uk

ABSOLUTE HEALTH

Don’t worry, be happy

Following on from last months article on depression, our health expert Sheryl Waters discusses the secret to true happiness

R

esearch has proven that unhappiness has a negative impact on health. Studies show that stress has a delayed impact on cardiovascular health, and there is a link between depression and the formation of atherosclerosis. Statistics show that the incidence of cardiovascular disease in New York increased by 53% following 9/11. More than ever, science is recognizing that happiness and peace are keys to optimum health. So it is not hard to believe that with so much suboptimal health in the world, there is also far too little true happiness. Researchers have well documented the fact that the happiness of Americans along with most Europeans has been steadily on the decline, despite an increase in overall material wealth. Everyday we learn about ways we can be healthier through diet, super foods, and exercise. Yet without authentic happiness, we remain at greater risk for developing illness and disease. The Science of Happiness Are you aware that there is actually a science of happiness? We can look inside of ourselves and discover the changes that can bring us further down the road to true, authentic happiness. Here are some happiness facts, according to scientists: l Women are generally less satisfied with life until they reach age 50. After age 50, men catch up. l Dissatisfaction leads to unhappiness, while gratitude raises our vibration. l Happiness can be measured in the brain. l No one thing makes us ultimately happy. l Happiness is a magical feeling. l Wealth doesn’t give us true happiness because there is always someone richer to compare with. “Buying” into advertising induces unhappiness by demanding that we “measure up”. l Long commuter journeys to and from work cut us off from happy social connections and cause stress and anxiety. l Happily married couples are healthier. A Study reports that happily married couples experience lower blood pressure.

Yoga and meditation can help to quiet the mind and promote happiness. l Deep friendships and trust in others seem to have a positive effect on health and overall wellbeing. l Those who have a sense of spirituality, whether through religion, philosophical beliefs, or faith are happier. l And, as the Dalai Lama says, “compassion and kindness lead to true happiness”. l Love and acceptance of ourselves and our lives, including all of our downfalls is key to our wellbeing. The bottom line is that happiness helps us experience less stress and better health and longevity. We all need to think about what can make us truly fulfilled, peaceful, and ultimately happy. l

Forgiveness Improves Health and Wellbeing Everyone knows that being angry feels terrible. When we feel angry at someone, we get a tight feeling in our chest and body, and our minds aren’t free. Feeling angry at someone who cuts you off when you are driving is bad enough. Long term, chronic anger can ruin peoples’ lives. Feeling angry for something that happened in childhood can literally make people prisoners of their own emotions.

“We all need to think about what can make us truly fulfilled, peaceful, and ultimately happy.” Dr. Luskin of Stanford University is studying how forgiveness can help people become healthy. The 150 volunteers who have taken part in the Stanford Forgiveness Project say that letting go of the hurt caused by other people or by forces they see as being outside themselves, is not just one of the greatest emotional releases; they feel better physically, as well.

“Getting angry and needing to forgive are universal phenomena, but the skills to forgive are inadequately taught.” Holding on to anger for too long can obviously affect a person’s emotional health. But hanging on to that anger, Dr. Luskin says, can also seriously affect people’s physical health. How is the Body Affected? Lack of forgiveness, which often occurs as a result of having been hurt, humiliated, angered, or having suffered fear or loss, feelings of guilt, or envy, can have profound effects on the way your body functions. Physically the body is in a state of stress. Muscles tighten, causing imbalances or pain in the neck, back and limbs. Blood flow to the joints is restricted, making it more difficult for the blood to remove wastes from the tissues and reducing the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the cells. Normal processes of repair and recovery from injury or arthritis are impaired. Clenching of the jaws contributes to problems with teeth and jaw joints. Headaches can become a problem. Chronic pain may get worse. Blood flow to the heart is constricted. Digestion is impaired. Breathing may become more difficult. Anger can seriously impair the immune system, increasing the risk of infections and illness. Luskin cites several studies that show how anger can affect the cardiovascular system by adding to a person’s general level of stress. Other studies have indicated that patients who have had heart attacks have been able to improve their physical health by practicing forgiveness and working to feel more tolerant and less angry. Additionally, Dr. Luskin says, when the body releases certain enzymes during anger and stress, cholesterol and blood pressure levels go up, not a good longterm position to put the body in. Forgiveness has been shown to lower blood pressure naturally. The bottom line, we can eat healthy and take care of ourselves on a physical level, but if our hearts are filled with anger, our bodies are not in optimum health.

Get the

WOW

FACTOR “I recently had my teeth whitened at a clinic in London.

I was expecting to come out with really white teeth, but they are only a little bit lighter than before. Is there anything I can do to make them whiter?

T

his is a common scenario, with many teeth whitening systems the results can often be variable, only producing slight differences in the shade of your teeth. The theory behind tooth whitening is that a special gel is applied to the surface of your teeth, which then bleaches them over time, producing a beautiful white smile. Dr Javad says “Over the years I have used nearly every tooth whitening system available on the market and I must admit with some I had a hard time convincing myself there was a difference in shade. When I was out in the States a couple of years ago I tried the Enlighten deep bleaching system for myself, the results were quite simply amazing, so I decided that this was the system that I would use in my practice” The Enlighten teeth whitening system was developed in the States and produces consistent and dramatic results. The gel itself is different from conventional

whitening treatments in that it combines with oxygen to penetrate deep within the tooth structure and whiten the teeth from the inside rather than just the outer surface. It is the only system that can even whiten teeth that have been stained by certain antibiotic treatments. Dr Javad is one of a few dentists that is fully accredited to offer Enlighten tooth whitening. Now you know the secret to how celebrities achieve their show stopping dazzling white smiles. If you would like to learn more about the revolutionary Enlighten whitening system or find out how you could benefit from it then call The Shoreham Smile Studio 01273 464454 or visit www.shorehamsmilestudio.co.uk to book a FREE whitening consultation with Dr Javad.

ABSOLUTE DENTAL COLUMN

AMALGAM FILLINGS To be or not to be? In the first part part of this two-part feature, Dr Farrokh Sharifzad from Marina Dentalcare, gives the arguments for and against the use of this dental material Roots of debate The debate is almost as old as mercury fillings themselves. In the early 1800s, dentists started mixing mercury with other metals - tin, silver, copper - to make fillings that could survive in the turbulent, moist environment of the mouth. The amalgams were reliable, relatively easy and cheap to use. Some dentists refused to go along, arguing it was dangerous, which split the profession into two factions. Eventually, the majority embraced amalgams, and criticism faded. But the debate has flared up periodically ever since. Current situation Today, both sides insist that science is on their side. The critics start with the premise that mercury is a poison, and that any exposure is dangerous. They point to studies that have found that the fillings leak mercury vapour, and that people with more amalgam fillings have higher concentrations of mercury in their organs. Animal studies appear to confirm those findings. “It is the same mercury that the Food and Drug Administration in the USA is warning about in fish,” said an activist with the anti-mercury coalition. “But it’s OK to put in your body?” But the majority of dental profession point to studies that have tried, and failed, to find any increase in health problems among people with fillings. Supporters concede that the fillings release a mercury vapour, but say the exposure is minuscule. “What science and experience tells us is that amalgam, like all other dental filling materials currently in use, is safe and effective,” said the American Dental Association (ADA) position paper. But in science, absence of proof is not proof of absence. Aren’t we in danger of making exactly the same mistake that was made over lead, asbestos, and DDT? Because we had to wait for too long, there were too many tragic side effects before the accumulation of scientific evidence showed conclusively that these were highly dangerous substances. What others do Sweden is the first country in the world whose parliament has banned amalgam. Faced with opposition from the dental lobbies, and anxious at the potential legal implications, parliament carefully wrapped the legislation up in a total environmental package. But members of parliament who had pushed for the ban knew what the real targets were. To the question of why Sweden has been the first country to ban dental amalgam (because there’s still no evidence, there’s no final proof, that dental amalgam actually hurts human beings), Siw Persson (Member of Swedish

"Aren’t we in danger of making exactly the same mistake that was made over lead, asbestos, and DDT?" Parliament) replied: “We have seen enough. Now we have to stop it, before more people are more sick.” The Swedes are fully aware that there is still no proven evidence that dental amalgam harms humans. But they’ve been reading the latest evidence, and their assessment of the riskbenefit ratio has been changed by it forever. The health benefits of amalgam, they judge, are no longer worth the risks. Now, other countries are following Sweden’s lead. Norway has become the second nation to legislate a sweeping ban on the use of amalgam fillings in dental work. Norway’s Minister of Environment and Development, stated that: “Mercury is among the most dangerous environmental toxins. Satisfactory alternatives to mercury in products are available, and it is therefore fitting to introduce a ban.” Denmark has announced plans to ban the use of amalgam in dental procedures, echoing a similar move by Norway and Sweden. Danish Minister for Health, said: “Composite fillings have now become so strong that we can expand the ban to also include amalgam fillings.” In Germany, amalgam is banned for patients with kidney problems and advised to be used with great caution in children and pregnant women. And in California, a new law now demands that dentists who use amalgam display a health warning to their patients. What we do in the UK The British Department of Health has stated that it continued to believe mercury fillings posed no danger. A spokesman said: “These fillings are a safe, durable and affordable cavity choice for dental patients that do not pose a health risk. “This was supported by the British Dental Association. According to the Department of Health, the number of amalgam fillings in England and Wales are decreasing. 500 practices in Britain refuse to offer mercury fillings. Marina Dentalcare is one of these practices. We have created an amalgamfree environment and we do not want to take any unnecessary chances when it comes to your health. We believe that the latest generation of composite materials and ceramic restorations have made amalgam fillings redundant. To be continued next month by Dr Farrokh Sharifzad. Heat the oven to 220C/428F/Gas 7. 2. Arrange the anchovy fillets on the ‘inside’ of each rump, season well, roll up and tie into shape with string. 3. Brush with olive oil and sear in a hot pan until well-browned all over. 4. Toss the cherry tomatoes in olive oil and bake in a roasting tray for 10 minutes. 5. Transfer the lamb to the roasting tray with the tomatoes and roast for 15 minutes for 200g/101⁄4oz rumps, or 20 minutes for 300g/101⁄4oz rumps, for medium rare meat. 6. Remove the tomatoes when soft and squishy. 7. Cut the potatoes into chunks and cook in boiling salted water until tender, about 20 minutes. 8. Rest the lamb for 10 minutes under a loose sheet of foil. 9. Drain the potatoes, add the butter and mash them until smooth. 10. Beat in the spring onions, milk, grated nutmeg, sea salt and pepper. 11. To serve, remove the string from the lamb and thickly slice. Serve with the spring onion mash and roasted tomatoes, and drizzle with the roasting juices.

Ingredients 250g butter , softened, plus extra for greasing 175g golden caster sugar 5 eggs , beaten 250g self-raising flour , plus an extra 2 tbsp 1 tsp baking powder zest 1 orange , plus 2 tbsp of the juice 250g natural marzipan , coarsely grated (easiest if chilled beforehand) 1⁄2 tsp almond essence, optional 200g glacé cherries , halved For the decoration 100g icing sugar , sifted 50g toasted flaked almonds 12 natural glacé cherries zest 1 orange

Method 1. Heat oven to 160C/fan 140C/gas 3 and butter and line a 20cm round, loose-bottomed deep cake tin. Beat the butter and sugar together with electric beaters or a tabletop mixer until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, 250g flour, baking powder, orange zest and juice and beat well till thick, creamy and evenly mixed. 2. Toss cherries in the extra 2 tbsp flour and fold into the batter along with grated marzipan and almond essence (if using). Spoon into the prepared tin, level and bake for 1 hr 30 mins, or until well risen and golden. A skewer will come out clean when ready. Leave to cool in tin for 10 mins, then turn onto a cooling rack to cool completely. 3. Mix the icing sugar with just over 1 tbsp water to make a loose but not-too-runny icing. Scatter the almonds over the top of the cake and position the 12 glace cherries around the edge, using a dot of the icing to fix. Drizzle the icing over the cake and finish with a scattering of orange zest. Cherries This recipe uses cherries instead of marzipan, which is traditionally rolled into balls to top simnel cakes. South of North Street

The Lanes are Brighton's most famous streets, and continue to draw visitors from all over the world. But how are they bearing up after the recession?

T

Tim Parker investigates

here, squeezed between the street which Hanningtons and Vokins once dominated and the Seafront, lie Brighton Lanes. Last month I wrote about the North Laine. It was vibrant, busy and doing well but what about the Lanes? Last week I carried out a oneman investigation. But, before I take you on my stroll round the oldest part of Brighton, let me tell you a little more about those two famous department stores. They were much loved and many still miss them. Both stores had their loyal followers. In their time they were leaders of a new style of shopping and, amazingly, until the 1960s they both had live-in staff. There was a communal lounge and a number of very small bedrooms on the top floor of Vokins. Hanningtons too had a number of bedrooms which I was shown after the store closed - they were tiny but each had a stained glass window. From the early1900s, department stores became very fashionable. They were warm, luxurious and welcoming. You could buy everything you wanted under one roof: a pair of shoes, a wedding dress, a shirt, a kettle, an easy chair, a saucepan. Afterwards, you could take tea and cakes in the restaurant - waitress service of course. But perhaps the most remarkable thing about these stores was the standard of service they offered. Well-mannered and trained staff were once easy to find in a country where one in ten of the population were in service. In the rapidly changing times of the last century it is a great credit to

50

Hanningtons and Vokins that, against the odds, they managed to remain open for so many years. Now, back to my stroll round the Lanes. I started in East Street, the smarter end, where I found some shops were extending their sales and offering a further discount on top of the advertised 50%. I suspect that things are not quite as they seem but one shop offered me a shirt for $9, I mean £s, but then what’s the difference nowadays? “It’s top quality,” said the assistant, “and it’s a real bargain. It was £35.” “But I don’t like the colour,” I told him. “Oh, we have lots of other colours in our stock room.” I beat a hasty retreat, I only had a fiver on me and had promised myself a cup of coffee before I went home. Where is Sussex Stationers? Gone. That was a pity, but at least others had taken their place. I stopped in front of All Saints, its extraordinary display of Singer Sewing Machines quite an eye catcher, and in keeping with the Lanes’ quirky image. A high street, high fashion retailer apparently - my daughter recommends the shop. From All Saints, I made my way to the Mock Turtle for one of their delicious cakes. Would a fiver be enough? Alas, there was no free table but I did speak to the new owner. “I have been here four years now and we are keeping things exactly as they were. We even use the same recipes. Business is very good.” That was very good news indeed. Retracing my steps I saw that C. H. Weston, the Gunsmiths, was open. I went inside to talk to the manager. “Business is good” he told me. I

ABSOLUTE PLACES pointed to the First World War Maxim gun in the window. “How many rounds could that fire in a minute?” I asked. Five hundred was the answer. No wonder so many soldiers had died in the trenches in that bloodiest of all wars. Where would I go for my coffee? I wandered into the Square towards Market Street past English’s, good to see that after so many years it still thrives, although sadly Zetlands, that splendid baker, has gone. Gilbert Harding, once the best known television presenter in the country, would queue there for his fresh bread most Saturday mornings. Despite the cold, a few hardy souls were eating outside and with Spring not far away the Square will soon be buzzing again. On an impulse I changed direction and walked through the Regent Arcade. My favourite chocolate shop, Audrey’s, was still there but far too many of the units were empty or had closing down sales. I turned into Market Street. At first glance it looked much the same, but then I began to be concerned. Is it sensible that three national coffee shop chains, Starbucks, Costa Coffee and Caffé Nero should be allowed to operate within a few yards of each other and so monopolize the area? That did it, I settled on an independent café for my coffee, just as good, if not better, and I got more change for my five pound note. I would like to give you the café’s name but, God help me, I can’t read my writing. Do look for it though, it was close to the Cricketers Pub. And then I walked through the old part of the Lanes, those intriguing narrow passages, past jewellers and others selling all kinds of stuff; clocks, watches, paintings, rings, broaches, Victorian spoons and garden spades. I walked past Geoffrey’s shop, an old friend who always has a splendid collection of silver, and then into Brighton Square. The Square is a relatively new development (when compared to the historic Lanes), that blends seamlessly into the Lanes and where some splendid dolphins sit atop of a fountain looking down on the throngs of shoppers and visitors. I took one more cup of coffee, sat down and enjoyed the scene. From the Square I began to wend my way home. Back to Market Street and there in front of me was Donatellos, that very successful Italian restaurant owned by the Addis Family. It’s hugely popular and with good food, friendly service and fair prices it deserves to do well. Next to the restaurant is the House of Correction. This was once an Antique Armoury owned by a Paul Grafton. A Knight in full armour used to stand in the window, he was a real feature. I enquired in Donatellos about the sadly empty shop and was told that they owned it and use it as a store room. What a waste of space! Come on you Addis family, do your bit for Brighton and open it up, a Knight would be an added bonus! So, my verdict? Well I’m pleased to report that the Lanes is still doing well. It’s a busy and successful part of our town but we all, shoppers and landlords alike, need to do our bit to support small and unique businesses. Let’s have more knights and fewer bland coffee shops.

he world’s tallest tower, developed by Emaar Properties, was unveiled recently to a crowd of thousands, and the world, in a crescendo of fireworks, lasers and fountain displays. The official height of the tower, unveiled as ‘Burj Khalifa’, was announced as 828 metres (2,716.5 ft). The launch party of all launches A closely guarded secret, the official height of Burj Khalifa was flashed onto a giant screen before an estimated crowd of more than 400,000, as lasers and fireworks lit up the night sky. Fireworks cascaded from the tower’s spire to the base and lasers blazed out from all levels leaving the crowds awestruck. The height was disclosed in arithmetic progression, with the numbers being flashed onto the screen, one after another. The tower’s height breaks all existing world records for tall buildings. Towering above Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world according to the three main criteria of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH). The CTBUH ranks the world’s tallest buildings based on ‘Height to Architectural Top,’ ‘Height to Highest Occupied Floor’ and ‘Height to Tip.’ At 828 metres (2,716.5ft), Burj Khalifa is 320 metres taller than Taipei 101, which at 508 metres (1,667 ft) had held the record for the world’s tallest building measured to the architectural top since 2004, the year the project was announced. Burj Khalifa achieved the distinction of being the world’s tallest structure – surpassing the KVLY-TV mast (628.8 metres; 2,063 ft) in North Dakota, USA – 1,325 days after excavation work started in January 2004. The tower also beats the 31-year-old record of CN Tower, which at 553.33 metres (1,815.5 ft) had been the world’s tallest free-standing structure on land since 1976. Constructing the worlds tallest building Burj Khalifa employs a record-breaking 330,000 cubic metres of concrete, 39,000 metric tonnes of steel rebar and 142,000 square metres of glass; and it took 22 million man hours to build. Other world records for Burj Khalifa include the highest occupied floor in the world, at over 550 metres (1,800 ft); the highest outdoor observation deck in the world – At the Top on Level 124; and the tallest service elevator, which travels to a height of 504 metres (1,654 ft). Mr. Mohamed Alabbar, Chairman of Emaar Properties, said that with the unveiling of the final height of Burj Khalifa, the world now had a new reference point for high-rise developments. “Burj Khalifa is an example of collaboration on a global scale, and the tremendous positive energy that can be generated when people from all over the world come together to work towards a common goal. Thousands of professionals and skilled workers from around the world worked on this once-in-a-lifetime project.” “More than 60 of the world’s leading consultants including South Korea’s Samsung Corporation and New York-based Turner Construction International realised the design for Burj Khalifa of Chicago-based Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM),” he said.

“Burj Khalifa is the focal point of the 500-acre ‘mega-project’ by Emaar Properties, described as the new heart of Dubai.”

The interior Burj Khalifa employed the latest advances in wind engineering, structural engineering, structural systems, construction materials and methods. All design considerations took into account the 12,000 people who will live and work in the tower. The handover to residents of the various components of Burj Khalifa began in February. With a total built-up area of about 6 million sq ft, Burj Khalifa features nearly 2 million sq ft of residential space and over 300,000 sq ft of prime office space, in addition to the area occupied by the keenly awaited Armani Hotel Dubai and the Armani Residences. The tower also features modern lifestyle amenities including clubs, health and fitness facilities, gourmet restaurants and the 124th floor observation deck, ‘At the Top.’ ABSOLUTE

At the Top At The Top, the world’s highest outdoor observation deck located in Burj Khalifa, opened to an equally overwhelming public response. Hundreds of people, mostly families, queued up for tickets to Level 124 of Burj Khalifa – and the chance of being among the first to experience its stunning views across the city. At The Top opened to the public following the dramatic inauguration of Burj Khalifa. Mr. Thomas Dempsey, General Manager, Burj Khalifa, said At The Top would more than live up to people’s expectations: “The panoramic views are like those from an airplane, such is your height above ground. There is also plenty to take in before you step into the elevators to the 124th floor: interactive displays, montages describing the evolution of the tower, and in-depth information explaining the people and technology responsible for this incredible building.” Tickets for the tour are time stamped at 30-minute intervals, on specific days, in order to carefully manage the daily rush of sightseers. The entrance to the At the Top experience is at The Dubai Mall’s Lower Ground level. The reception area of the attraction features a large illuminated model of Burj Khalifa that introduces and familiarizes visitors with the various sections within the super-tall building. Multimedia displays ‘Dubai Then and Now’, ‘From Earth to the Sky’ and ‘From Vision to Reality’ narrate the evolution of Dubai and Burj Khalifa. The ascent to the 124th floor is by a double-deck elevator, each deck carrying up to 14 people and travelling at an amazing 10 metres per second. In less than a minute, the elevator reaches the observation deck, the world’s only public observatory at this height with an outdoor terrace. High windows circle the entire viewing platform, and visitors can scan the horizon and the distant streets below through computerised viewfinders, which also have pre-programmed day and nighttime vistas of the city and surrounding region. Visitors can also buy official merchandise from the At the Top retail boutique.

BRIGHTON ECO VEGGIE FAYRE

Of all the many events and activities through which you can support the Martlets Hospice in Hove, the most challenging, exhilarating and memorable could well be a tandem skydive. Although you can skydive for the Hospice at anytime during the year, the next Martlets “group” skydive day will take place on Mothers Day Sunday, March 14th 2010. After an appropriate briefing and instruction, you make your way to the jump aircraft which takes around 20 minutes to reach the jump height of 12,000 feet. Then, strapped to an experienced instructor, you exit the plane. The next 45 seconds are spent in freefall at which you descend at speeds of 120 mph. The instructor then pulls the ripcord and after the main parachute opens, you’ll spend the following minutes in a gentle descent to the ground. Over the last 6 years, 125 people have taken part in sponsored skydives for the Martlets raising more than £26,500 for patient care at the Hospice. The skydive is organised by Headcorn Parachute Club on behalf of the Hospice and will take place at Headcorn in Kent. The minimum cost to take part is £395 per person of which £150 is paid to the Martlets. However, participants are encouraged to raise extra money by getting sponsored by family, friends and colleagues. You have to be at least 16 years of age to take part. Recently hospice volunteer, Aileen celebrated her 70th birthday with her first jump. “Yes, I was nervous beforehand” says Aileen “but it was one of the most exciting things I have ever done and I would not have missed it for the world”. “Fantastic”, “magical” and “brilliant” are words that other skydivers have used to describe their experiences. ABSOLUTE INTERVIEW

Goodwood’s Fairytale 10th Duke and Duchess of Richmond (Picture: Chichester Observer)

As the hierarchy to one of Sussex’s most regal families, The Duke of Richmond is refreshingly down to earth and ‘not a grumpy old man,’ as John Periam discovered upon meeting him and his wife, the Duchess, at their home on Goodwood estate. Words and Images John Periam

G

oodwood in West Sussex has always been one of my favourite areas. If it is not the beautiful Downs, it is the rural farmland that blends in with them. The Goodwood estate covers a large area overlooking the coast towards Brighton from the east, and Portsmouth to the west. The panoramic views from Goodwood Racecourse down to Goodwood House and the motor circuit make this a unique part of England. On this occasion, I was visiting the Goodwood estate to meet His Grace the Duke of Richmond. The Duke (Charles) is married to The Duchess, Susan, and they currently live in Molecomb House on the estate. A little bit of history - all first named children through the generations are called Charles because they are directly descended from Charles 11. The family started with Charles 11 having a child by his French mistress, Louise de Keroulle, and that child was given the title of The Duke of Richmond, and named Lennox. Molecomb House is set in a valley surrounded by outbuildings and stables with a beautiful lawn to the front of the property that gives views up to Goodwood House. What a nice way to spend each morning, watching the wildlife and seeing the seasons change from the lounge. I started by asking The Duke about his background, and when he moved into the estate. “My wife and I came back to Goodwood in 1969 after living in the Midlands for 13 years where I worked as a Chartered Accountant. It has become a tradition in our family for one to gain experience in other walks of life before returning to running the estate. My son, Lord March, did the same and became a well established photographer in London (he even worked for the late film director Stanley Kubrick), before he returned and set up the Goodwood Festival of Speed and Revival Meetings. “I took over from my father in 1969, and the first thing we had to do was to decide if we wanted to live in Goodwood House. and what to do with it. Over the next six years we knocked down 30 rooms – decorated 56 with builders on site all that time. It was not that inconvenient. as the design of the building meant they were one end and we lived in the other.” He added, “Of

60

course the rules in planning would nowadays prohibit such a project, being an A1 listed building – but it had to be done! “The racecourse was next on the list for a major refurbishment which was long overdue. The big grandstand was over seventy years old and was built in porous Belgian bricks by my great grandfather, so this was re-built. It was then followed by a total re-build of the course, with the final development of the Lennox Enclosures due in the imminent future. It has taken a long time but has been well worth it, making it one of the most beautiful courses in this country.” The Duke was Chairman of the Racecourse from 1969 until 2008.

“The five days Festival Week at the end of July has become one of the highlights of the British racing calendar.” “I am very proud of what my son, Lord March, has done with the motor circuit, which I closed at my late father’s request in 1966. The Festival of Speed and Revival Meetings are now world established, with the 2009 Revival having in excess of 135,000 visitors over the three days! This year there will be a new event in August called ‘Vintage’.” He added, “It’s not about horses and not about cars – it will be an opportunity for people to take a step back in time to see what happened in the chosen eras – 1950s-1980s.” How things have changed. When the Duke returned to the estate in 1969 there were 200 staff. Now there are 500 with staff-related costs of £13 million pounds a year. The Duke explained,“To provide this income we have to look to the future, we have bought back the Goodwood Hotel, and have developed the aerodrome which the RAF opened in1940 and now we have four new purpose built hangars.”

ABSOLUTE INTERVIEW “The Festival of Speed and Revival Meetings are now world established, with the 2009 Revival having in excess of 135,000 visitors over the three days!” Lord and Lady March

The family is very proud of the farm too. It is now the largest organic farm in the UK and is totally self-sufficient. This means that everything the animals eat on the farm is grown there. There is now a farm shop too (with some of the best sausages I have ever eaten!) They farm dairy cattle, beef cattle, pigs, and sheep and have just started a turkey farm. It is an on-going development which has attracted a lot of interest from the farming press. Back to the racecourse, which has been going 200 years, I asked the Duke about their forthcoming events this year. “The five day Festival Week at the end of July has become one of the highlights of the British racing calendar. We have more top races, some of which have just been upgraded – these are called Pattern races. This is excellent news for us as we can now claim to have some very high quality racing at Goodwood, especially at the bigger meetings.” So how is competition within the racing world with other courses? “There is some - but unfortunately they abolished the rule that said you could not put on race meetings if there was another one less than 50 miles away. This means that a meeting at Goodwood and Sandown can be held on the same day – which to me is not cost-effective as they are so close together. However, there are never more than four race meetings on a single day across the whole country. “We have a total of 23 days racing at Goodwood in a year compared with the four days we had just prior to the Second World War. The big meetings are the ones that are financially successful. It is a ‘Catch 22’ situation which means that if the course is used more, it is not necessarily more profitable due to the overheads and lower crowds. “The equestrian world of horses is a lot different to that of racing. My wife had a dressage horse of her own when we returned to the estate. She was responsible for encouraging the dressage events for well over 21 years which resulted in both the European and World Championships being held at Goodwood. When my son returned and we moved to Molcombe House that is when we decided to stop it.” He added, “It is nice to know it is still being run at Hickstead by Dane Rawlins, keeping it in Sussex. “The region that Goodwood is within is very horse orientated, with polo at nearby Cowdray Park, show jumping and dressage at Hickstead, along with the racing at Goodwood. There are also some first rate horse racing trainers based in the area which helps put West Sussex on the racing map. “There are also two established golf courses at Goodwood which have great potential and are being re-developed with some new ideas for the future. The ‘Kennels’ has just been refurbished and is a club where all members of any of the Goodwood clubs become automatic members giving them an opportunity to have a base to meet and enjoy quality food and drink.” I asked The Duke about his favourite sport? “I have to say cricket,” he said with

great enthusiasm. “There is a match here almost every Sunday in the summer and cricket at Goodwood goes back to 1702, during the first Duke’s time. We know that as we have a receipt for a barrel of brandy purchased by the first Duke, to give to the winning team. I must stress I now say to the winning teams these days that they won’t be getting a barrel of brandy!” The South Downs are a National Park now and the Duke has some apprehension about what that will mean for the region. “I think it will be some time before we all know what a National Park will mean down here and in the meantime we will have to wait and see.” He added, “As I am now over 80 I will not be too worried. “You have to remember, in total there are only 11 days a year at Goodwood where there is a major event on and that is what we rely on for our major income. The house is open to the public 60 days a year, unlike most other stately homes which are open all the year round. The house is mostly used for functions and receptions as well as weddings. With a total of 13 grandchildren, the Duke and his wife have their family life mapped out for them. The eldest grandson is 15 and the eldest granddaughter is 25. “I think you could say they are all enjoying life at the moment and have not shown any particular interests as yet. You can’t tell any of them what they are going to do!” Both the Duke and the Duchess support many local activities, and he recently founded the ‘Sussex Community Foundation’. “I try to help where I can within Chichester and the five surrounding villages around the estate which are very important to the family.” There is a competition set up by the Government for a UK City of Culture and Chichester is on the short-list of 14. As I prepared to depart Molecomb House, The Duke referred to a situation many years ago at the races when Bing Crosby appeared. Surprised by this, he asked Bing if he would like to present one of the trophies. Sadly, the singer declined as he did not want too much publicity. Later, an American horse owner (who was not there) had a horse that won a race. Bing, being a friend of the winner, changed his mind and agreed to collect the trophy on behalf of the owner in the unsaddling enclosure whilst singing a verse of ‘When Irish Eyes Are Smiling’. The Duke added, “In those days celebrities really were ‘celebrities’.” As I drove off I thought about the Duke’s farewell comment to me. “I am trying not to become a grumpy old man!” I am sure he will never be that. He is proud of what his family have achieved and in particular his son. In the current economic climate things are not easy; however, it is nice to see that energy, family traditions and loyalty have made Goodwood the success it is. Long may it continue!

ABSOLUTE MOTORING

The road to heaven Powerful, efficient and lightweight – the V6-engined Porsche Panamera Gran Turismo

F

ollowing the successful introduction of the Panamera in 2009, Porsche is expanding the model range by introducing two new versions of the Gran Turismo; the Panamera and Panamera 4 will be on-sale in the UK from June this year. Both the Panamera and Panamera 4 models are powered by a brand-new Porsche-designed 3.6-litre V6 featuring Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) developing maximum output of 300 hp and peak torque of 400 Nm. Featuring a 90o V-angle, the V6 engine sits snugly beneath the sleek bonnet and, following the Porsche tradition, the Panamera transmits its power to the road via the rear wheels, while the Panamera 4, as its name suggests, comes as standard with active all-wheel drive. Equipped with the Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) double-clutch gearbox - which includes Auto Start/Stop - the Panamera delivers 30.4mpg on the Combined cycle and CO2 emissions are an impressive 218g/km. The Panamera 4 averages 29.4 mpg and 225g/km respectively. When equipped with the optional nineteen-inch all-year tyres with optimised roll resistance, fuel consumption reduces further and the CO2 ratings lower to 213 g/km and 64

220 g/km in each case. Furthermore, both V6 versions of the Panamera fulfil the strict EU5 emission standard. The combination of performance, efficiency and everyday usability typical of Porsche can be partly attributed to the intelligent application of lightweight construction methods consistently throughout every Panamera, with the axles, doors, bonnet, wings and the rear tailgate each made of aluminium. Furthermore, the brand-new V6 power unit, built at the Porsche engine plant in StuttgartZuffenhausen, offers similar lightweight advantages and is approximately 30 kg lighter than the eight-cylinder featured in the Panamera S and 4S. Together, these innovative weight reduction measures throughout the car contribute to the low overall weight of the Panamera of just 1,730 kg – a remarkable figure for a car of its capabilities. Like the proven V8-engined models, the Panamera and the Panamera 4 each combine dynamic sporting driving characteristics with a high standard of comfort and a luxurious interior ambience. Offering steel suspension as standard with optional variable dampers, adaptive air suspension with additional air

volume is also available as an option and provides an even wider range of suspension settings to extend the driving qualities further still. Standard equipment on all models includes Bi-Xenon headlights, front and rear ParkAssist, heated front seats, tyre pressure monitoring, automatic dimming rear view mirrors, Porsche Communication Management with touchscreen satellite navigation and audio controls and cruise control. The new Porsche Panamera is priced from £61,461 (including VAT) and the Panamera 4 (PDK transmission as standard) is priced at £66,929 (including VAT). Every Panamera has the assurance of a Porsche Vehicle Tracking System (VTS), a sophisticated vehicle security package approved to Thatcham Category 5 standard, and customers will also be able to explore the potential of their new car by participating in a complimentary course at the Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone. Green Brightonians Thankfully schools are about more than just passing exams. Brighton College encourages pupils to think about the wider community and learn to express themselves as individuals. In February, pupils helped to co-ordinate a Green Week. Every day saw a different focus on the environment and living life in ways that do less harm to the planet. As well as recycling waste products and turning them into furniture, pupils were encouraged to walk to school and save electricity (pupil numbers walking to school increased by 25% and the school energy reading was nearly 7% lower week on week!). Pupils organised a swishing event (donating clothing in return for vouchers which can be used to buy other items) and made individual ‘green’ pledges. The final event was an ‘own clothes day’ which raised in excess of £600 for charities including the Haiti appeal. The college has signed up to the 10:10 campaign and every pupil is encouraged to help the school achieve a 10% reduction in carbon emissions.

Although it was initially planned that there would be one form of entry, demand was so strong two classes were admitted - and demand for entry in September 2010 has risen further. As a result, Brighton College will consider further applications on a first come, first served basis. Enquiries should be directed to Leila Grayling on 01273 704369.

Highlighting human rights in an age of terrorism Brighton College welcomed one of the most distinguished lawyers of his generation to give a lecture on human rights in the context of counter terrorism legislation. Lord Carlile, who has earned a reputation for his wise decisions on areas as diverse as mental health care and the defence of the Princess of Wales’ butler, is the government’s independent reviewer of terrorism laws. Instructive and challenging, he captivated his large audience of pupils, staff and parents. All pupils attend talks from visiting speakers including authors, politicians, journalists, explorers, actors and business people. It helps to broaden the pupils’ knowledge and experience beyond GCSE and A-level courses.

An unprovoked attack

The website www.bullyonline.org contains a great deal of advice and incite into the causes of bullying in schools, and suggestions for helping those who are bullied as well as the bullies themselves Recently there’s been much increased this bullying-entrenched climate awareness of bullying in schools and poor or no role model - the child has no whilst it may appear that bullying is on role model at home, or a poor role model the increase, I suspect there’s been little for one or both parents and has never change in the amount of bullying that had the opportunity to learn behaviour goes on in school. What has changed skills is that society is at last beginning to abuse at home - the child is being recognise just how vile bullying is and abused and is expressing their anger that the myths and misperceptions are through bullying just that - myths and misperceptions. neglect at home - similar to abuse as Those who perpetuate these myths are the child’s emotional and behavioural choosing to be part of the problem, not development is being retarded the solution. undue influence - the child has fallen in It seems that children bully for a variety with the wrong crowd of reasons and when dealing with child conduct disorder - the child has a bullying it’s essential to identify who is conduct disorder, the precursor to the bully at the centre of the violence antisocial, psychopathic or other - there’s usually one person who’s the personality disorder gang leader - and the reasons for bullying TThere are very few programmes that will which include: actively help an aggressive child learn to frustration - a child is impaired in some deal with their aggression. All of these because that’s the only way to survive in are short-term, short-sighted non-solutions

which do not address the cause of the problem, which in all cases will get worse. Bullying is the general term applied to a pattern of behaviour whereby one person with a lot of internal anger, resentment and aggression and lacking interpersonal skills chooses to displace their aggression onto another person, chosen for their vulnerability with respect to the bully, using tactics of constant criticism, nit-picking, exclusion, isolation, teasing etc with verbal, psychological, emotional and (especially with children) physical violence. When called to account, the bullying child will typically exhibit the denial - counterattack feigning victimhood response to evade accountability, often with success. Child bullies are adept at manipulating the perceptions of adults, especially adults who are inexperienced or who have a low EQ. Much good work has been done on addressing bullying in schools, but much remains to be done. If a child learns how to bully, and gets away with it, there’s a lot of anecdotal evidence to suggest they leave school and carry on their bullying in the workplace.

right Town is a new display of chalk pastel drawings by award-winning local artist and illustrator Christian Birmingham. The drawings represent a departure from the children’s book illustration for which Christian Birmingham has an international reputation. Unusually, they show how things are, rather than how they are described. In the Impressionist landscape tradition, they try to capture the fugitive atmospheric effects of a particular place at a specific time; whereas the craft of book illustration represents the timeless, imagined world of an author. Christian Birmingham said “What links both kinds of work is the careful observation of coherent light effects across a whole image, which fascinates me and which is at the heart of all my work. I believe that, for any representational drawing or painting to convincingly create the illusion of a threedimensional space, the light within the picture must be convincing”. These landscapes are responses to the changing light of Brighton’s seafront – an

often very subtle, but characteristically bright, light. The brightness is common to most seaside places where the reflecting sea doubles the light of an unusually large expanse of sky - but with the added artificial brightness, even at twilight or night, of a seaside city.

ake a fresh look at the Chinese-style interiors of the Royal Pavilion through the eyes of young people. In September 2009, 15 young people from Cardinal Newman Catholic School in Hove took up a challenge to create an exhibition taking a fresh look at the Royal Pavilion. Armed with open minds and enthusiasm, they began by visiting and exploring the Royal Pavilion. They met curators to find out about the Chinese-style interiors and how the palace is a great example of chinoiserie – a European style that copied and adapted Chinese designs and motifs. To put the Royal Pavilion in context, the young people visited the British Museum and talked to staff who are experts in Chinese history. They also looked round Chinatown in London and had lunch in a dim sum restaurant. After all this research, the group created artworks to express their thoughts and feelings about the Royal Pavilion, including n A personal video tour of the palace: n A transformed iconic image of the palace printed onto souvenir clocks: n Historical paintings combined with contemporary photography, to echo the mix of styles that shaped the interior design of the Royal Pavilion. n An audio compilation of personal interviews with visitors, asking “What does the Royal Pavilion mean to you?” Through reinterpreting the Chinese-style interiors in a way that is meaningful and relevant to them, the young people can positively influence people’s attitudes towards the Royal Pavilion, encouraging more people to engage with the building and its collections. his exhibition is the first ever to focus on Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s shared enthusiasm for art. Bringing together more than 400 items from the Royal Collection, it celebrates the royal couple’s mutual delight in collecting and displaying works of art, from the time of their engagement in 1839 to the Prince’s untimely death in 1861. The exhibition also challenges the popular image of Victoria – the melancholy widow of 40 years – and reveals her as a passionate and open-minded young woman. For Victoria and Albert, art was an important part of everyday life and a way they expressed their love for each other. Around a third of the objects in the exhibition were exchanged as gifts between the couple to mark special occasions. They range from the simple and sentimental, such as a set of jewellery in the form of orange blossom, to superb examples of early Italian paintings, including Bernardo Daddi’s The Marriage of the Virgin and Perugino’s Saint Jerome in Penitence, both given by the Queen to the Prince for his birthday in 1846. Prince Albert’s taste was influenced by his German ancestry and his experience as a student in Florence and Rome. He led a revival of interest in early German and Italian painting at a time when ‘the Primitives’ were largely ignored. Among his acquisitions were Duccio’s Triptych, the first acknowledged work by the artist to enter an English collection, and Apollo and Diana by Lucas Cranach. Albert was also interested in how paintings were displayed, and several of the pictures in the exhibition are shown in the frames he commissioned for them. The Queen’s tastes were more mainstream than those of her husband. She appreciated the narrative qualities of pictures such as Ramsgate Sands: ‘Life at the Seaside’ by William Powell Frith. Her fondness for portraiture is shown through paintings and drawings of her family, and her own sketches of her children. The royal couple were regular visitors to the annual Royal Academy exhibition and frequently made purchases. In 1855 Victoria bought Cimabue’s Madonna Carried in Procession by Frederic Leighton, the first work by the artist to be shown at the Academy. Other paintings, such as John Martin’s The Eve of the Deluge, were acquired during visits to artists’ studios, while George

Cruikshank’s The Disturber Detected was bought in an unfinished state when it was sent on approval to Buckingham Palace. Prince Albert’s profound admiration for the work of Raphael and the ‘Raphaelesque’ in contemporary art can be seen in The Madonna and Child by William Dyce and the drawing Religion Glorified by the Fine Arts by Johann Friedrich Overbeck. The artist Edwin Landseer’s skilful depiction of animals greatly appealed to Victoria and Albert, who surrounded themselves with a large assortment of pets. In Landseer’s charming portrait of Eos, Prince Albert’s favourite greyhound, the dog stands poised and alert, guarding her master’s possessions. The German painter Franz Xaver Winterhalter received by far the greatest number of royal commissions. Over two decades of patronage, he produced numerous formal portraits, such as The Royal Family in 1846 (described as ‘sensual and fleshy’ by one contemporary critic) and The First of May 1851. He was also entrusted with more private work. In 1843 Victoria commissioned ‘the secret picture’ from Winterhalter as a surprise for her husband’s 24th birthday. The artist presents the Queen in an intimate pose, leaning against a red cushion with her hair half unravelled from its fashionable knot. ABSOLUTE FINANCIAL SERVICES

Need a mortgage? S

o you have found that special home and now you need to sort out the finance. Mortgages that are for residential purposes are regulated by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) and there are strict guidelines on how they are sold and who can advise clients on them. If you want to buy a home you will need to have a deposit to put towards the purchase of the property and the rest of the money will have to be borrowed. Most lenders expect a deposit of around 15-25% (this does depend on the banks) and have strict lending criteria.

Ali Saber MBA CeMAP 01273 764717 07879 223735 Marcot.net info@marcot. net

If you want to borrow money there are a few general things that the lenders will want from you. (This is only a general guide ): 1. Proof of Identification – You must be able to prove you are who you say you are, usually an original document such as a Passport or Driving License will be enough. 2. Proof of Residency – Generally you must be a UK or EU resident to qualify for mainstream regulated mortgages. Different Criteria applies if you are from a non-EU country (depending on the lenders) 3. Proof of Affordability - You must be able to afford the mortgage repayments so you have to prove

4.

to the lenders that you will have sufficient income to make these payments. Lenders will usually want to see payslips or if you are self-employed the last 3 years accounts. Good Credit Profile – Finally a good credit profile is very important as this is key to obtaining a finance. You need to check your credit profile with credit agencies such as www.experian.co.uk .

It is really important for you to assess your income and outgoings to make sure a mortgage is affordable. Remember, some mortgage payments can rise as well as fall. You will also need to budget for other costs such as stamp duty, legal fees and valuation. If you are thinking of buying a home and need advice in relation to finance, please do not hesitate to contact me for a free consultation.

Each year the awards ceremony is held in stunning and inspirational locations, and this year was no different as No.5 Cavandish Square is a truly remarkable hotel and club near Marylebone, where the newest addition Electric salon recently opened. The day started with a presentation by Juilie Eldrett, a top industry consultant, on how Electric clients can continually be treated to the best service possible. In the weeks leading up to the day she had employed some mystery shoppers and the results were astounding; especially for the Brighton Salon, which achieved an astonishing 100% . The Electric art team then kicked off the afternoon with a demonstration of their trends on stage for 2010.

SME Risk Management Closing the Stable Door... !

O

ver recent months I have, I hope, given you some practical advice about risk and business continuity management. A common SME reaction to addressing risk issues is to say “it will never happen to me” and “I have a business to run, I have not got the time to worry about what may happen” or “that’s what my insurance is for, it will cover me from any financial loss”’. All understandable, if somewhat naïve, points of view. Unfortunately, incidents / disasters do happen – here is a real life example of an actual incident of a SME who had no business continuity plan and called my company in for advice ‘after the horse had bolted’! Case Study The client occupied several floors of a multitenanted building. A fire, due to overloaded wiring, started in the top floor in another tenant’s area over a weekend – eventually, the fire spread setting off the smoke detector in the stairwell (there were no detectors in the office area!) and the fire brigade were alerted. Most of the floor was destroyed by the fire and the rest damaged by the fireman’s water! Luckily

This was followed by the awards ceremony; the highlight of the day, since it is the chance for Mark Woolley, owner and creative director, to recognize all those who have had an outstanding year, be it for customer service, creativity or, of course fabulous hair. Brighton came away with six outstanding wins: Charlie Manns was voted Electric hairdressing icon of the year. His award was presented by the celebrated industry editor Maria Weijers from Salon Business, his second win of the day was the men’s image award. Charlie has now gone on to become a partner and salon manager at the new Marylebone, London Salon that opened its doors at the beginning of January. Adam Foulser, who won colour expert award last year, came away with the Avant-garde hairdresser of the year award. This was closely run between 3 other stylists who are all members of the Electric art team and travel the world creating and inspiring the hair industry with their sessions looks. Other winners from Brighton included Charlotte Baker – Electric Stylist of the year, Anna McGregor - Senior Trainee of the year and again Adam Foulser – Treatment Expert of the year. Owner, Mark said: “All the teams did exceptionally well this year, and to be honest it was one of the hardest awards the judges and I have had to do so far, but it always gives me great pleasure to present these awards and I want to say well done to all of our winners, Brighton especially shone.” Maria Weijers said: “I’m delighted to have been involved in such a fantastic event; the creativity, wealth of talent and the very obvious belief in Electric from all the salons is a real inspiration to the industry.”

ABSOLUTE BUSINESS MATTERS by Roger Clifton-Moore, MD of RMI

most of the water cascaded down the stairwell and did little damage to the other tenant’s office areas. The client thought they had a lucky escape and expected to be able to occupy their offices the next working day. However, as it transpired, they were not allowed to use their offices for two weeks! This was due to a number of unforeseen issues relating to the buildings incoming mains supply which, at the time of the fire, was disabled - this is a normal health and safety measure. As the client had no contingency plan for their IT or office infrastructure they could do little to remedy the situation and as a result nearly went out of business. If the building had been completely destroyed it is unlikely that hey would have survived as the post incident risk review identified a number of serious shortcomings: • No Incident Management / Recovery Plan – no action plan or off-site contact information for staff, clients or service suppliers - they could do little but wait and ‘hope for the best’ • Inadequate IT backup – no off-site copies

of IT environment or critical business data – the fire could have destroyed their servers and they would have had no means to recover them at another location Inadequate Insurance Cover – their ‘business interruption’ insurance did not cover loss of income and had an inadequate level of ‘increased cost of working’ cover i.e. not enough to cover renting and reequipping a new office

A very ‘near miss’ – how well are you prepared for such an incident?
