Word from the Board Chair 2016 was another year of success. We successfully continued to implement our strategy and laid a strong foundation for our future. TAHA’s services to the industry went from strength to strength through 2016, with increased of membership and partnership base. The activities in 2016 were responding to TAHA’s three key strategic pillars: improving business enabling environment, providing technical support services and facilitating markets and trade.

TAHA wound up its 5 year strategy (2012 – 2016), and developed a new one running from 2017 to 2021. Having gone through a rigorous consultation process, the new five-year strategy will focus on championing horticulture transformation for improved income, nutrition and employment. I remain thankful to our development partners, implementing partners, the TAHA Secretariat and TAHA Members for their generous support which contributed to this year’s milestones. Word from the Chief Executive Officer

I

t is my pleasure to present to you the 2016 TAHA annual report. The report provides an overview of our programmes and the impact realized. As you go through this report, you will realize that there are tremendous achievements accrued over last year, though this is only a snippet of all the achievements realized.

We continued to improve the sector by providing quality and timely services to our Members. Our Commercial wings TAHAFRESH Handling Ltd and Fresh2Sokoni Ltd provided TAHA with additional reach, strength and resources to reasonably provide and maintain quality, reliable, affordable and sustainable demand-driven services to the industry. TAHA improved its Information System – TAHA Information System (TIS), benefiting more than 18,000 users via mobile phones. Through TIS, most farmers accessed market information, agronomic tips and information on buyers, which in turn improved their income. Moving forward, TAHA will upgrade TIS by digitalizing the system and adding features to accommodate market and logistics information, agronomic tips, financial and input dealer’s information as well as gender and nutritional tips. As you read this report, you will realize that there is a lot that TAHA achieved in 2016. I like to thank our development partners, The Governments of United Republic of Tanzania and Zanzibar, Our Members, TAHA Board and and Implementing Partners. Who are we.. Tanzania Horticultural Association - TAHA is an apex private sector member based organization that advocates for the growth and competitiveness of the horticultural industry in Tanzania. Since its inception in 2004, TAHA has been an effective voicing platform for producers, traders, exporters and processors of the horticultural products mainly; owers, fruits, vegetables, horticultural seeds, and spices and tubers. The Association safeguards the interests of the private sector and ensures that the industry issues are well mainstreamed in the national and international agenda.

Our Footprint TAHA operates in 15 regions in Tanzania: Arusha, Mwanza, Manyara, Kilimanjaro, Tanga, Dodoma, Morogoro, Iringa, Mbeya, Njombe, Pwani, Dar es Salaam, Lindi, Mtwara, and Unguja and Pemba in Zanzibar. We implement our activities through cluster systems as an entry point within the targeted communities. Presently, we have 22 clusters across our footprint

TAHA implements its commercial activities to complement its development thrust by promoting and mainstreaming business oriented mindsets and practices in the sector and enhancing the financial sustainability of the Association. The current commercial division of TAHA is in provision of industry logistics (air and sea freighting, trucking, clearing and forwarding, cargo handling) and marketing.

2016 Achievements Below is a summary of key achievements realized by the Association as a result of our interventions both in the Mainland and Zanzibar. Technical Support Services • 9,458 farmers (32% women) were mobilized and trained on various technical interventions 6,148 (65%) applied technologies • TZS 711,888,000 invested by small and medium-scale farmers in Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro, Morogoro and Pwani to enhance extension services system. Most investments were on drip irrigation system and greenhouses • 22 crop clusters formed to focus extension services system • 52 Demonstration plots established to serve as technology platform in both Mainland and Zanzibar. 65% of the farmers who learnt from demo plots adopted technologies. • Three Practical Training Centers (PTCs)

established at the Nanenane grounds in Arusha, Mpapa and Muwanda in Zanzibar to serve as technology platform for farmers to learn and adopt good agricultural practices.This brings total number of PTCs to 7 • Promoted youth engagement in horticultural industry by supporting the operationalization of Farmers’ Practical Training Centers in Morogoro (SUA) and HORTI Tengeru. As a result, more than 800 youth benefited from the centers. • TAHA established five commercial nurseries; Njombe and Marangu (avocado), Muwanda and Mpapa in Zanzibar (vegetables) and Usa River, in Arusha (vegetables). The nurseries provide farmers access to quality seedlings and to learn how to establish nurseries • Farmer groups comprising of 265 farmers were audited and certified by Global Good Agricultural Practices (GAP)

Without TAHA I would have not realized potential that is within the horticulture farming. TAHA trained me on land preparation, connected me with input suppliers, linked me with potential markets and provided me with the solar powered pump

Improving Business Enabling Environment TAHA implemented strategic interventions to address business enabling environment issues, and as a result, several milestones were reached as summarized below: • Established a rapport with the current Government, and the Secretariat has established strong relationships with the top leadership in the current Government Administration. • TAHA continued with the dialogue with the government to assure an enabling business environment for our members and farmers at large. TAHA ensures the newly established or revised policies are pro-horticulture development. • Established very strong connections with international partners, empowering TAHA to draw strong support from international partners such as USAID, SIDA, Trias and VECO • The Secretariat continued to support other instruments to address various development aspects in agriculture. These

Before she joined TAHA, she struggled a lot to access market information and the process wasted her time. “I spent a lot of time finding markets, the markets which were not reliable, and I was forced to sell produces because I had no option, thanks to TAHA for inventing TIS. instruments include Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT), Water Resource Group, Agricultural Council of Tanzania (ACT), Tanzania Private Sector Foundation (TPSF) etc. • A total of 130 (F: 40 M: 90) farmers accessed TZS 138,800,000 worth of loans from banks and microfinance institutions

• 86 Members from Mkombozi group have been linked to USADF for a grant opportunity to strengthen the group’s farmers

TAHA continued with its aggressive efforts to identify and connect farmers to various markets. In 2016 TAHA identified and contracted new markets in Nairobi and Mombasa for capsicums and onions, Middle East for capsicums and Europe for avocado and Orange Fleshed Sweet Potatoes (OFSPs). • TAHA Information System (TIS) upgraded to enable users to pull information on demand basis with more than18,000 users accessing different horticultural information via their mobile phones. • Export value grew from USD 545,530,619 (2015) to USD 600,000,000 (2016) • In FY 2016 more than 2,500 farmers were linked to local and international markets

Cross Cutting Issues Gender and Nutrition Parallel to the technical services, TAHA also provided Gender and Nutrition trainings to key industry stakeholders.The aim was to address gender inequality and high levels of under-nutrition among the majority of population in Tanzania. In summary, the following were achieved:

• Conducted media campaigns on TV, radios, newspapers and magazine to boost consumption of horticultural products

• TAHA sensitized women and youth to engage in horticulture production and processing through local shows by using women role models • TAHA partnered with GAIN/Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) program to collaboratively work on enhancing nutrition through consumer awareness, workforce nutrition and food safety issues.

Youth mobilization and empowerment TAHA acknowledges the challenge of youth unemployment in the country and recognizes it as a global issue. In this context, TAHA has strategically initiated youth programs through career fair events in universities, Practical Training Centers in Nanenane Arusha, SUA and Horti-Tengeru. In addition, the following milestones were reached in year 2016: • Support primary and secondary schools in production of nutritious vegetables and thereby enhancing nutrition in schools. In some schools, TAHA trained agronomists who have been employed by the schools to work in school farms. • Girls’ empowerment through motivational engagements (speeches, presentations and trainings) in order to attract youth/girls to engage in horticulture. • Organized agricultural entrepreneurship trainings and workshops aiming at mentoring students on horticulture production and agribusiness skills • Providing awards to best students taking SUA B.Sc. Horticulture as a way of attracting youth to study horticulture

TAHAFresh continued to strengthen its capacity to deliver its services to the membership by: • Establishing a Trade facilitation Hub in Dar es Salaam to expand its physical presence. • Expanding the customer base in Iringa, Njombe and Morogoro • Extending its services to non-members thus expanding its revenue base The TAHAFresh Handling and Logistics recorded massive success in 2016 in terms of shipping volume: • • • •
