he Steering Committee of Lions Quest Project under Sub District 411B in Tanzania can now proudly announce that “we have completed our goals and targets during the last eight years.” As Chairman of the committee and Project Co-Ordinator, I wish to thank each and every member of the Steering Committee, all Lions Clubs, School Teachers and Students including the Ministry of National Education for the support and cooperation. In a nutshell, all said and done, we have managed to conduct twenty five workshops in major cities, towns and villages in Tanzania, including Zanzibar. And thus our well trained Tutors have taught 780 teachers from 400 secondary and primary schools who have imparted the knowledge to estimated 157,200 students. The chain reaction of the knowledge has also gone to the families, in particular parents who always expect the best of all the good things their children achieve in their lives. We as Lions keep up with the Mission Statement which I wish to quote: “OUR MISSION IS TO PROVIDE QUALITY LIFE SKILLS TO OUR YOUTHS SO AS TO MAKE THEM RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS OF THE FUTURE AND TO LEAD A HEALTHY DRUG FREE LIFE, WITH A VISION AND TO REINFORCE POSITIVE MORAL VALUES.” « Continue to pg 2

INFORMATION ABOUT THE LIONS QUEST

T

he Lions Quest “skills for adolescence” is an on-going value based, long range programme of Lions Clubs International Foundation. It takes care of the development of the entire personality of a school-going child. The consequences have shown that the changes we seek are permanent and involves the whole family, community and nation as a whole. The project which is globally recognized and also by the United Nations, is a positive preventive programme and not a curative one. The chapter “skills for adolescence” is a programme that teaches students skills in the following:- (a) Building self discipline, responsibility and self respect. (b) Communicating effectively and cooperating with others. (c) Managing attitudes and emotions. (d) Strengthening positive relationships with family and elders. (e) Learning, developing skills in solving problems and making healthy decisions. (f) Resisting drugs and intoxicants.

(g) Thinking critically and creatively. (h)Setting goals and following through. (i) Providing services to others. It goes without saying that parents and grand parents are always worried about their children’s future. They usually ask: (a) How will I protect my child from the growing negative influence in life?. (b) How will my child fare in the fiery competitive atmosphere of today?. (c) How can my child learn to face frustrations which are inevitable in life?. (d). How will my child cope with the fast changing world of today? The Lions Quest project has an answer to these apprehensions. The LQ Project is a positive programme which helps in uniting families, schools and community. Lessons to help students in improving their writing abilities, reading and speaking are imparted in workshops and seminars. These are but a few of the advantages of LQ Project but the side effects and other advantages are so many that this space is just too small to accommodate all.

WAR AGAINST INTOXICANTS

A

n iron brush was used to cleanup the country of harmful intoxicants, thus ensuring the nation to lead a healthy and drug-free-life. The campaign started in Dar es Salaam during the early months of 2017 and within no time it spread like wild fire throughout the country. Large and small plantations of illicit “banghi” were detected in remote villages, mountainous areas and places not easily reachable. Under Police supervision and Government Officers, these plantations were set ablaze. Tanzania Police and Local Authorities

also seized small plastic packets containing hard liquor, commonly known in Kiswahili as “viroba”. The virobas were very popular among young people and consumption of the intoxicants were a cause of many social problems including criminal offences and road accidents. Seizure of large consignments of such type of intoxicants, worth millions of Tanzania Shillings, were almost an everyday media news. The overall objective of the campaign is to put a stop to illicit drugs dealings, usage of harmful and dangerous intoxicants. Almost in the same direction, Lions Clubs International had launched an international campaign,

through Lions Quest Project, to discourage usage of illicit intoxicants including smoking and consumption of alcohol among youths. The world-wide educational campaign, especially in primary and secondary schools, has resulted in educating not less than 12,000,000 young people. They are taught through their teachers and parents. In Multiple District 411B (Tanzania and Uganda) such a campaign has been going on for the past eight years. In Tanzania, the LQ Steering Committee under the veteran Lion, Abdul Majid Khan has resulted in organizing and conducting 25 workshops involving teachers from primary and secondary schools. Each workshop had 30 maximum students who learnt basic knowledge of skillful lessons, how to discourage youths from practicing bad habits, parental education in involving them in the campaign. Lions Clubs in Tanzania joined in the campaign to keep the tempo going on. Much has been said, much has been learnt and much is being implemented. All this in the cause of serving humanity. We strongly believe that it is high time the Ministry of National Education in Tanzania should consider to include the ethical lessons of Lions Quest in students’ learning subjects. The proposals were made by the Lions Quest Steering Committee more than three years ago. LION SAYED ABDUL HAI SECRETARY: LIONS QUEST STEERING COMMITTEE

ongratulations and hats off to the Steering Committee of Lions Quest Programme in Tanzania and Uganda for organizing a very successful campaign of helping the youth to lead a meaningful, healthy and drug-free lives. The Lions Clubs International, through LCIF has funded the eight years of campaign by financial support amounting to US Dollars 60,000 and local matching fund of almost 10,000 US Dollars. Local Donors including Lions Clubs and Lions Members have spent their valuable time and money to ensure that the project was well implemented. In the changing life-style, be it in Africa, Asia or Europe, parents are always worried about their children’s future. Their time spent in the lower and higher learning institutions must always be tracked to ensure that bad habits, harmful and illicit intoxicants are completely removed from their path. This is where teachers, parents and Lions become involved directly or indirectly. It is rightly said that it is easier to control a child from being a prey to bad habits rather than repairing a grown-up victim who becomes, literally a great loss to the nation. As Governor Elect of Sub District 411B, I wish to ensure you (Lions Clubs) that the good works you are doing will always be cherished and my office and District Officers will give you full assistance when and where required. Three cheers to the LQ Steering Committee under the guidance of PMCC and LQ Project Coordinator Lion Abdul Majid Khan.
