uhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences ( M U H A S ) conducted its first Convocation. The aim of the Convocation is to bring together its members and provide an avenue for graduates to maintain their links with the University and its faculties and schools. The

Convocation is meant also to provide feedback to the University on matters of concern to graduates and to foster the advancement and recognition of the University and lastly is to provide linkage between the Committee of Convocation and the newly formed Alumni Council will provide an important route for graduate input to the advancement

MUHAS Vision is to become a centre of excellence for training of health professionals, quality research and public service, located in a spacious area with a state of the art university hospital, conducive learning environment and sustainable resource generation

Prof. Temu on behalf of the minister called upon the health and allied sciences professionals to provide the government with evidence – based strategies to improve the health of Tanzanians and come up with better health training strategies

She was optimistic that the symposium will add significant value to efforts being made by the government towards improving training on health sciences professionals. ‘As you are all aware, the government is currently striving to curb shortage of human resources for health and improve provision of health care “she observed. be presented during the convocation are the: The role of information and communication technologies in transforming teaching and learning at Universities of Health and Allied Sciences and another one titled: brain drain and challenges of training health professionals: where are our professionals.

Ephata Kaaya, said the convocation will bring together all students who were trained at university and together can contribute as part time teaching students, doing supervision and collaborative research, and facilitating student’s placements for clinical work and industrial placement for training.

TANZANIAN AMBASSADORS ABROAD TAKE TOUR AT MUHAS MEDICAL ACADEMIC CENTRE AT MLOGANZILA CAMPUS.

T

he Ambassadors representing Tanzania Government abroad together with Vice Chancellor, DVC-ARC, Acting DVC-PFA, Acting DVC-HS, Deans and Directors visited the Academic Medical Centre at Mloganzila Campus. The objectives of the tour were to familiarize with the new MUHAS Academic Medical Center and its functions and modernity, to receive personnel needs required by the University in order to use and operate the Centre efficiently, as well as to find out required infrastructure and the financial cost for construction of academic and other facilities

for Mloganzila campus. This information was required in order for the ambassador to solicit grants, loans and other funds abroad for the University. Speaking before the visiting of the Project Site, the Vice Chancellor Prof. Ephata Kaaya gave a special thanks to the Tanzania ambassadors for taking their time to visit the new project despite of their many obligations they have nationally and internationally. “For us this visit, is a clear indication that, the government recognizes contribution towards building our nation in teaching, research and provision of quality health care” he said.

Prof. Ephata Kaaya gave a short report to the Tanzania Ambassadors concerning the construction progress, achievements and challenges facing the establishment of the new campus. He explained to the Tanzania ambassadors that construction of Academic Medical Centre was completed on 31st August, 2016 and currently the Supplier is completing supplying and installation of medical equipment and the work is expected to be completed by end of October 2016. During his presentation Vice Chancellor informed Tanzania Ambassadors the main challenges facing

Academic Medical Centre is lack of enough human resources to support operationalization of the Centre. He further mentioned that the Government has provided employment permit for 50 health personnel and transferred staffs from various hospital is only 213 employees from various hospital though the minimum requirements are 928 staffs in order for the teaching hospital to operate. Not only that but also, he requested the Ambassadors to look for the possibility of obtaining support from training and health specialist’s volunteers to support teaching and service provision at Muhas Academic Medical Centre. The request was extended especially for Emergency medicine, Critical and Intensive Care Unit, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery, Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Gastro- Hepatic Surgery, Nephrology and Urological Surgery. Furthermore request was for Anaesthsiologists, Ortorhinolaryngologists or Ear, Nose Throat specialists, Orthopaedicians and Traumatologists, Physiotherapists and Rehabilitation Medicine specialists, Maxiollofacial surgeons and Orthodontists, Hematologists, Haematopathologists and Blood Transfusion specialists, Pathologists, as well as Diagnostic Radiologists and imaging specialists. Furthermore, the Vice Chancellor mentioned that another challenge that is lack of funds to complete the construction of Infrastructure for supporting the operation of

the center such as lecture theatres, research laboratories, staff houses, students and interns hostels. He continued to say that all proposals for these infrastructures were developed and submitted to the Government and other stakeholders to solicit for funding. He further requested the Ambassadors to look for grants, loans and other funds from abroad to support establishment of the required infrastructure at Mloganzila Campus. In his conclusion, Prof. Kaaya congratulated again the Tanzania ambassadors for taking their time to visit the new MUHAS Academic Medical Centre and he emphasized that “on behalf of MUHAS management I am requesting again, to use your position in advertising our teaching hospital as well as to seek for financial support for the construction of this Campus” The representative of other Ambassadors, Amb. Radhia N. Msuya congratulated the

management for the historical achievement attained in strengthening of the health sector in Tanzania especially in establishing the Academic Medical Centre which will be the largest hospital and it will have the capacity to provide training and provision of health services in Tanzania and beyond. Also Ambassador. Msuya requested the Management to prepare and submit to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East Africa Cooperation all requirements for supporting the hospital operationalization and establishment of the new campus at Mloganzila. And she promised to continue providing support for establishment of MUHAS New Campus at Mloganzila. This visit was conducted on 12nd October 2016 and was attended by the Tanzanian Ambassadors Abroad, Vice Chancellor, DVCARC, Acting DVC-PFA, Acting DVC- HS, Deans and Directors, Technical and selected staffs.

MUHAS CELEBRATES THE 10TH GRADUATION CEREMONY

through the school of Nursing where for the first time, MUHAS has conferred a Master Degree in Midwifery and Women’s Health at its 10th graduation, and these graduates will be the leaders and teachers in improving the health of mothers and children in Tanzania, he said.

T

he MUHAS Chancellor H.E Alhaj Alli Hassan Mwinyi the former President of the United Republic of Tanzania who was the Guest of Honor conferred Diplomas and degrees to 944 graduates. Out of this number 376 graduates were awarded Diplomas, 8 got their Advanced Diploma and 367 were awarded first degrees while 183 graduates were awarded Masters Degrees. Furthermore 2 graduates were awarded Masters Degrees of Super specialties and lastly 7 graduates were awarded PhD degrees. Speaking during the graduation ceremony, the Chairperson of the MUHAS Council Ms. Mariam J. Mwaffisi congratulated the students for their good performance which make the MUHAS community to celebrate this day. She also gave special thanks to the professors,

lectures as well as MUHAS staffs for their support and contributions to the student’s performances which lead to celebrate this ceremony. Also she congratulated the former Chairman of the MUHAS Council Mr. Deogratias A. Ntukamazina and the Vice Chancellor Prof. Ephata Kaaya for their good leadership that enable the University to reach where we are now and to pass the inspection which was conducted by the East African Community Joint Medical and Dental Practitioners Councils on 14th March 2016. Ms. Mwaffisi said in her speech that in the Human Resource for Health Strategic Plan 2014- 2019 it is shown that the ratio of people to a doctor in many regions of Tanzania is between 1:30,000 to 1: 50,000 people per one doctor. This ratio is a great burden to doctor and can lead to poor service delivery. The Chairperson emphasized that

the University will continue to cooperate with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children together with the other stakeholders to ensure the Mloganzila Campus starts to operating on time hence will enable the University to produce the high number of professional to deal with the deficit. Furthermore, the Chairperson added that one of the main objective identified in the “health sector plan is to boost the economy and reduce poverty in Tanzania” in order to ensure that all Tanzanians are participating fully in health development activities. In order to archieve this goal MUHAS through their academicians will continue to conduct various research aimed at solving these challenges, she added.

with Alliance for Global Clinical Training (AGCT) and Maharashtra University of Health Sciences and the last one is with Heidelberg University. All these agreement will enable academicians to study various fields of therapy and increase the ability to treat various diseases including cancer. Furthermore, Prof Kaaya mentioned other achievements

The Vice Chancellor added that through the School of Public Health and Social Sciences, MUHAS has established a Bio-Ethics department. The department will provide training and consultancy services especially in conducting human research and services in general.

Prof Kaaya concluded by congratulating graduates and urged them to be good ambassadors of MUHAS wherever they will be in the building of the nation. The MUHAS 10th Graduation Ceremony was held on 3rd December 2016 at the University campus.

MUHAS CONDUCTS ACADEMIC PRIZE GIVING CEREMONY IN THE YEAR 2015/2016

he MUHAS Vice Chancellor Prof. Ephata Kaaya who was the guest of honor awarded 159 various academic prizes to the best students for the academic year of 2015/2016 during the prize giving ceremony on 2nd December 2016 at New Lecture Theatre FiveGraduation Square. Speaking during this ceremony, Deputy Vice Chancellor – Academic Research and Consultancy Prof. Eligius Lyamuya said that the names of these best students which are from the School of Medicine, School of Pharmacy, School of Dentistry, School of Public Health and Social Sciences, School of Nursing, Institute of Traditional

Medicine, and lastly Institute of Allied Health Sciences were approved by the University Senate. Prof. Lyamuya added that for a student to win a prize he/she must have attained academic excellence with a G.P A of 3.5 or above, also in the case of individual course he/ she should have attained a score of a B+ grade or above and currently there is an additional criteria which is based on the discipline, regular attendance and dedication to academic sessions. “Out of a total number of (159) prizes won, (93) prizes were awarded to undergraduate and (70) prizes awarded to post graduate students. The School of Pharmacy has continued to lead in the

number of prizes for the seventh years, with (25) prizes, followed by the Institute of Allied Health Sciences (19), School of Dentistry (18), School of Public and Health and Social Sciences (10), the last two schools with least number of awards were School of Medicine (10) and the School of Nursing (9)”, he said. The DVC-ARC further informed the audience that 93 prizes out of 159, 44 were won by male and 23 won by female students. This indicates that 65% of the undergraduate degree prizes winners in the academic year 2015/2016 were won by the male students and 67% of the Diploma prizes winners were won by male

students. Male students have therefore continued to shine for the four years consecutively, he added.

Prof Lyamuya added that before the big boys took an upper hand, female students outshined the male students for the previous five consecutive years. “I am therefore reiterating my call to the female students to aggressively respond to this challenge and regain your lost glory. He urged all students to maintain a high level of competition among themselves because that is the kind of academic environment that will create good breeding ground for creativity and innovation.

DVC- ARC also recognized the outstanding students who scooped the highest number of awards compared to their colleagues. The outstanding students were from the school of pharmacy, school of medicine, school of dentistry, school of public health and social sciences and school of medicine who are Obrey Urio, Fatema Z. Alimohamed, Nyagwaswa Michael, Juma Ayubu, Marietha A. Holela, and Athanase Maselle, he mentioned.

After awarding the students, refreshments were provided and the occasion was attended by Guest of Hour Vice Chancellor, DVCARC, DVC-PFA, Deans, Directors, Heads of departments, Academic staff, Prize donors, Parents, relatives celebrated together and exchanged ideas.

he Chairman of the Tanzania Commission for Universities Prof. Philip Mtabaji accompanied by the Vice Chancellor, Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor- Planning, Finance and Administration, Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor- Hospital Services visited MUHAS Academic Medical Centre at Mloganzila Campus. The aim of the visit was to assess the development progress of the construction of MUHAS Academic Medical Centre (MAMC), and how far the project has been implemented , challenges faced and how to overcome them. Before visiting the site, the Vice Chancellor Prof. Ephata Kaaya gave a short report to the Chairman of the Tanzania Commission for Universities that the construction of the teaching hospital with 571 beds, 13 surgery rooms with modern equipment including CT- Scan (Chanel 64 and slice, Ultra sounds and MRI (1.5 T) and X- Rays machines for detecting diseases started on March 2014,

Describing the facilities in the new complex the Vice Chancellor said the new Teaching Hospital has two wings with ninth floors which consists of Electrical and Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) Room, Mechanical room Air Handling Unit/ Fire Fighting System/Water storage tank, Waste water and sewerage treatment plant, Control Center, Medical Gas Room, Food service areas and Laundry, VIP and VVIP wards, Infections wards, Intensive Care Units, Laboratories, Dental Clinic Psychiatry and mental health wards, and the last one is emergency medicine department. Prof Kaaya added the main challenges facing the Academic Medical Centre is lack of enough human resources to support operationalization of the Centre. He further mentioned that the Government has provided employment permit for 50 health

Speaking shortly after the visiting Site, Prof. Philip Mtabaji was very impressive with the construction progress of the teaching hospital and congratulated the MUHAS management for the great effort they made in the establishment of the state of art teaching hospital which will provide treatment, provide Infrastructure to conduct research and strengthen the technical expertise and increase the number of specialists which will lead to reduction of the cost of treatment abroad. The chairman also expressed his concern on availability of human resources for health in the country and the efforts taken by the Government to intervene and minimize this problem. He said that the number of students applying for health related courses particularly in Doctor of Medicine has been increasing while number of qualified Health and Allied Sciences Universities are relatively small.

He emphasized that MUHAS should increase enrollment of the undergraduate students. “He also advised the Management to revise standard setting of student entry qualifications by lowering cut off points to encourage A’ level students with minimal points to get a chance to study at the Medical School.

RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT FRAMEWORK SUCCESSFULLY INTRODUCED TO MUHAS EARLY CAREER RESEARCHERS UNDER CIRCLE PROGRAM Commonwealth Universities (ACU) through the UK AID support. The CIRCLE program aims to strengthen research capacity in Sub-Saharan African research institutions to support early career researchers to develop a coordinated and strategic approach to climate change impact research.

uhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) through the Directorate of Continuing Education and Professional Development and the CIRCLE Institutional Strengthening Program (ISP) organized a training workshop about

research development frame work to MUHAS early career researchers under the Climate Impact Research Capacity Leadership Enhancement (CIRCLE) program. CIRCLE is a project administered by the African Academy of Science (AAS) in collaboration with the African

He gave a short remark on Climate change and its impacts on health of living organisms and people’s health especially in developing countries and the role of early career researchers to address its impacts through research. Also he explained the main aim of the workshop was

to introduce the components of CIRCLE program to early career scientists. During the workshop different topics were presented. Two presenters were from MUHAS. The topics were on developing mentoring skills in Professional and career development, networking skills in professional development activities and self-management was delivered by Dr. Ester Innocent. In addition to this Dr. Doreen Mloka, Director of Continuing Education and Professional Development introduced to the participants the Research Development Framework (RDF) tool. She explained RDF lens highlights to early career researcher the competencies in terms of knowledge, Skills and Attitudes that are need to be become a successful researcher. So through use of the RDF

lens participants were able to assess themselves in terms of competencies they have and the ones they need for their career advancement in reference to building mentormentee relationships, professional leadership, decision making, team building, communication skills, time management, networking, analytical skills, creativity and innovation among others. The participants designed individual SMART action plans for their Professional/ Career Development using the RDF Planner to ensure acquisition of competencies. After the presentation of the topics there was a discussion concerning on CIRCLE program and the participants of this workshop had an opportunity to comment and seek clarifications and give their views about the content and importance of addressing Climate change impact,

mentoring skill and use of RDF. All these topics were highlighted to be very useful and relevant to the advancement of both early career researchers and the Institutions that they work for. There was a request to regularly conduct similar seminar workshop to scientist joining the university. The workshop was held on the 4th November, 2016 in seminar conference room of the Haile Debas Centre for Health Professional Education (HD-CHPE) at MUHAS and attended by the 18 participants five were MUHAS Scientist who are CIRCLE visiting Fellow (CVF); One participant was non-MUHAS Scientist; while 12 were MUHAS Master or PhD students, from the Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Public Health and Social Science, Nursing and the Institute of Traditional Medicine.
