Letter
from the CEO CEO/President Eve Anthony Connections Editors Kelli McCain Eve Anthony Erin Beasley
As 2016 winds to a close, I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for sharing in the success ACCA has achieved this year. Through volunteer hours, monetary contributions, and an ever growing number of community partners, ACCA was able to offer excellent programming and services to older adults in Athens and Northeast Georgia. We would not be able to accomplish this level of service without you! It is an honor to be part of a community that shows such an extraordinary level of commitment to bettering the lives of older adults. I, along with the staff of ACCA, feel honored to work each day towards making a difference in the lives of those we serve and we feel especially privileged to have the strong support of so many of you. Although reflecting on the successes of 2016 brings a sense of accomplishment, I am also looking forward to what is sure to be a year of even bigger and better things at ACCA. In 2017, we will be celebrating our 50th year of service delivery and have many exciting events in the works to commemorate this special year. These events will recognize all that we have accomplished as well as the exciting direction the agency will be taking in the future! Thank you for your unwavering support and commitment. 2017 is sure to start off strong and pave the way for many future successes. We look forward to working with you to continue doing this important work and serving the people who need us.

Legislative Update 2017 State Legislative Priorities Funding for Home and Community Based Services Each year, CO-AGE includes a budget priority to increase funding of Home and Community Based Services. These services allow people to remain in their home and community instead of institutional care and cost the state less money! This legislation affects several of ACCA’s programs including the Meals on Wheels, Center for Active Living, and Adult Day Health programs. Funding for Transportation Services Older Adults consistently rank transportation as their number one need and concern yet transportation options are limited. In ACCA’s service area, transportation for older adults is severely underfunded and the available options don’t necessarily match the wants and needs of consumers. This year advocates chose to support a budget ask of $10 million for transportation services. This money will be used to design and implement creative and flexible transportation options for seniors who no longer drive.
St. Mary’s Home Health Care/Hospice Services brings more than nursing, rehabilitation, social work services, aides and spiritual care into our patients’ homes. We also bring our hearts. Whether you

Volunteer Spotlight
MEET OUR PEOPLE julie k. gaines Secretary, Board of Directors
Julie K. Gaines first became involved with ACCA in August 2010, when the Augusta University/University of Georgia Medical Partnership opened in Athens. She served as a faculty coach for a team of first year medical students who were working with ACCA for their community health service-learning course. In October 2012, Julie started serving on the ACCA Board of Directors, and now serves as the Secretary for the Board. A native of Elberton, GA, Julie grew up in a family that has always served and given back whether it be through church or other local nonprofit organizations. Julie says, “The importance of service and volunteering was instilled in me at a very young age. I feel it’s important to give back and serve the community in which I live. I am motivated to specifically serve ACCA because working with older adults has always been an interest and passion of mine. My grandparents were such an integral part of my growing up, and their influence inspires me to help other older adults in my community. I want to make sure their needs are being met and that they will always have a resource such as ACCA to support them.” Julie is Head of the Library at the Augusta University/ University of Georgia Medical Partnership in Athens, where she has been since it opened in 2010. Julie enjoys technology, but also loves the more traditional analog items of books and fountain pens. In her free time she enjoys spending time with my family and friends, pop culture, a good pie and photography. When asked about her work with ACCA Julie says, “I am inspired by ACCA and everything they do for older adults. I am absolutely amazed by how many lives they touch 14 connections
every year with the amount of funding they are given. The ACCA staff impress me with their positive attitudes and their hearts for serving the older adult population. I am happy to be a part of this organization and to have made lifelong friends through my working with ACCA. I would like to encourage others to get involved with volunteering for ACCA. You will not find a more rewarding and inspiring agency to work with.”
ANNIE LUMPKIN
ADH Health & Activity Aide Annie Lumpkin began her second career at ACCA in August of 1995. Annie worked at DuPont for 21 years, and during her time there knew several co-workers that were balancing a full-time job with the demands of caring for older family members. When she decided it was time for a change, she chose to apply at ACCA. Annie’s great aunt was a client at ACCA, and she says, “I applied because I have a great compassion for people. I knew ACCA was a blessing to family members and caregivers.”
KATHY KASARSKIS has been a volunteer at ACCA for 10 years and is heavily
involved at the Center for Active Living (CAL). It all started when she saw an ad in the newspaper for a pianist for CAL’s Belle Hill Singers choir. Taught by her mother, who she describes as an incredible musician, Kathy played piano as a child but took a long break for many years. The position represented the perfect opportunity to pick up where she left off. Since then, she has faithfully accompanied the choir every Tuesday and Thursday as they go out into the Athens community, using their music as a means to uplift others. As if her duties with the choir weren’t service enough, Kathy then dons her dancing shoes to lead one of CAL’s most popular classes, Line Dancing (Tuesday and Thursday at Noon). The group started seven years ago with only two or three people but now tops around thirty people each class! She credits longtime member and dancer, Pat Wong, for helping get a solid group of enthusiastic individuals involved. Kathy is a well-seasoned teacher with a knack for breaking down the choreography into easy-to-follow steps. She refers to her faithful class members as “warriors” because of the bravery it takes to come in, learn a dance from scratch, and perform in front of others. “I enjoy seeing people succeed,” says Kathy, whose members describe the class as their “happy place”. When asked why she has been such a dedicated volunteer over the years, Kathy remarks that she enjoys helping people stay active in every capacity from the physical to mental. She does not think of aging as getting older but as getting better every year.
While working at Bentley Adult Day Health Annie socializes with clients, engages them in activities, and helps with daily needs. Annie’s smile is a regular sight in the center where she brings joy and laughter to clients, co-workers, and family members. “It brings joy to me to socialize with the community, family members, and caregivers on a daily basis”, she says. In her free time Annie enjoys spending time shopping and traveling with family, especially her beloved grandchildren. Born and raised in Clarke County, Annie is an active member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in West Athens where she is a member of the Senior Usher Board. Annie’s secret to staying forever 29? “I live each day, as tomorrow is not promised. And, SMILE!”

Ms. Judy started making this recipe 25 years ago at her child day care center. She enjoys making this recipe with her grandson because it is simple. It has been such a hit that all of Ms. Judy’s children still make her famous Peanut Butter Cookies. We chose this one because it is timetested and grandchild approved.

Broccoli Almondine
Broccoli Salad Duchess Street This amazingly simple dish is sure to be a staple at any holiday dinner. Add dried cranberries for a sweeter take on this crowd favorite.
2 packages frozen broccoli ½ cup sliced almonds 3 tbsp. oil 2 tbsp. butter 1 tsp. salt Brown almonds over medium heat. Remove to a bowl. Heal oil and butter. Add broccoli. Cook until tender. Sprinkle with almonds.
This simple and delicious recipe was created by a group of young children in an after school program in Germany. For one of their projects, the students were asked to write down their favorite treats. These treats were combined into one recipe and the kids named it, the Pink Salad. Sarah loves this recipe because it’s an easy holiday desert and reminds her of those kids. What could be sweeter than a recipe made by children?

Making Holiday Visits Special The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren program at The Athens Community Council on Aging has been recognized by the Brookdale Foundation with the Janet Sainer RAPP Award recognizing excellence in the delivery of supportive services to relative caregiver families. The award was presented to ACCA Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Program Director, Paige Powell, at an awards dinner in Denver, Colorado, during the 2016 RAPP Conference.
Will you be visiting family in nursing or personal care homes over the holidays? ACCA is pleased to announce that Frances Marshall has received the 2016 ACCA Successful Scholar Award. This scholarship supports ACCA employees wishing to continue their education in securing increased responsibility and growth within their professional careers.
Thank you ACCA was honored to accept a $5,000 donation from the Kelly Family Foundation. Linda Kelly, a current Take-out Tuesday volunteer and Senior Leadership Academy graduate, presented a check to CEO Eve Anthony. This is the second year ACCA has been recognized by the Foundation, and we are so very grateful to Linda and her family for their continued support.
Here are some ideas to help you make the most of your visit: 1. Bring a copy of the newspaper from your family member’s hometown. 2. Bring videotaped greetings from family and friends, or bring home movies and family photo albums- and don’t forget the popcorn. 3. Help your family member make and/or send holiday cards. 4. Play “name that tune” with holiday records, tapes or music on the radio. 5. Make simple gifts for your older adult’s grandchildren. (The activity director at the Nursing Home may be able to help provide supplies and ideas for these.) 6. Play card, table or board games together- lifelong favorites or new ones. Keep a running tally of the scores in your own tournament. 7. Go “shopping” from catalogs for clothes, household, or frivolous necessities. Go “window shopping” in fancy catalogs filled with things you’d never buy. Maybe even plan to make one of the items in a following visit. 8. Bring a favorite holiday recipe book to explore or to plan a meal together. The next visit you can bring along a treat made using one of the recipes. 9. Bring a tape recorder and to reminisce about favorite memories. Cover family memories one visit, memories about growing up on another visit, compile the memories and share copies with family. You can bring an old family photo album, pick pictures and have them copied to include. Make and decorate a “Memory Book” that your family member can keep. 10. Start a friendly news-filled “chain letter” among your family member’s friends. Nothing makes a residents day like a letter from a friend. Want more tips and ideas like these? Call ACCA’s Ombudsman program at (706) 549-4850 to request the complete list “101 Things To Do While Visiting your Older Adult”.

HealthyU 2016 Highlights
Wraps Up First Year with Graduation In September, the Center for Active Living presented its first graduating class in the HealthyU program, a six-month curriculum that encourages healthy eating as the foundation to good health. Inspired by the What A Waste initiative brought to the center by the National Foundation to End Senior Hunger last year, the continuing education program focused on senior hunger and nutrition, composting and sustainability, and making healthy lifestyle choices. Participants followed the “Journey of the Zucchini” from seed to plate to soil while receiving credits towards graduation. Throughout the journey, members immersed themselves in all stages of the growing cycle. They revitalized the Center’s garden and traveled to local farms, including UGArden and West Broad Garden, to learn about sustainable agricultural practices. Other highlights included a visit from California-based food activists, Rob Greenfield, who spoke about the problem of food waste in the U.S. There were tutorials on composting, canning and creative uses for fresh herbs, like summer popsicles. Local chefs, farmers markets and dieticians shared tasty recipes to eat more greens, eat on a budget and eat right for health. Local health professionals came by to share their expertise and conduct screenings. HealthyU inspired healthy habits beyond the plate, too. Volunteerism is up at the Center and recycling has become part of everyday culture. In July, for example, members repurposed a wooden palate into an American flag. The “flag” has since become garden folk art. Members have also increasingly participated in on-site physical therapy and fitness classes to improve strength and balance. Thanks to its success, HealthyU will return in April 2017 for another season. Congratulations to all our graduates! Clockwise from top left: Senior Hunger AmeriCorps VISTA Christy Tweedy invites hands on learning about vermiculture and composting; Fourth of July repurposing project inspires creativity; Members get involved in Planting Day in ACCA’s garden; One of several presentations by Athens Farmers Market; CAL Director Allyn Rippin with proud graduates; West Broad Manager Rebecca Ennis gives a tour of the community garden; CEO Eve Anthony does the honors for Adeline Jackson; the Garden Club repurposes egg cartons for seedlings; Harvesting the fruits of our labor (center)
Thank you, community partners!

A Matter of Balance Thursdays from 3:30-5pm, January 12 – March 2 (8 weeks)
Programs Focus on Fall Prevention Falling is a fear for many people, especially for those who have fallen in the past. According to the National Council on Aging, falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries in older Americans. One in three Americans aged 65+ will fall every year. As the risk increases with age, we may start to limit daily activities, social engagements and physical exercise. The good news is falls don’t have to be an inevitable part of aging. Studies show that evidencebased classes and targeted exercises that focus on balance enhancement can boost confidence, range of motion, strength as well as a sense of community and fun. Throughout the year, the Center for Active Living offers members a variety of classes and workshops to maintain sure footing and an active, independent lifestyle.
In this highly popular, evidence-based falls prevention workshop, participants will learn how to change your thoughts about falls to help you overcome fear of falling, take steps to prevent falls, and learn exercises that will increase strength and flexibility and improve balance. Each two-hour session will be led by ACCA’s CAL Wellness Coordinator Nikaela Frederick, and ADH Activities Coordinator Brooke Pike -- both trained Matter of Balance coaches. The class size is limited to 15 participants because small group discussions and problem-solving are an important part of the workshop. Free and open to CAL members and the community.

Tai Chi: Moving Meditation Balance Enhancement
Outdoor adult playgrounds are all the rage in Europe and Asia, and ACCA has a system right in our backyard! Instruction is provided by a licensed therapist who familiarizes participants with the equipment then leads a series of movements designed to increase balance, coordination, flexibility and stamina. The Wellness Motion System is open during agency hours to members as well as local residents and families. In case of inclement weather, classes take place in the Harris Room.
Aging is an overwhelming situation. The issues surrounding this new frontier can cause anxiety, stress and worry, for the senior and family who is caring for her.

Instead, the yoga asanas, or postures, that Bill teaches are meant to bring steadiness, comfort and ease to the body and mind. Classes are meant to be easy for beginners, yet challenging later-on for those with more experience. Where: ACCA Harris Room When: Fridays w/Anna Time: 10:00am-11:30am Cost: Free for CAL Members These classes are intended for active mature adults regardless of skill level. Tai Chi: Moving Meditation Balance Enhancement
Balance is critical to maintaining a healthy, independent life style. Fortunately, the good news about balance is
that it can be taught and improved at any age.
