Whether you’re visiting to experience our vibrant downtown district full of great eats and sips to enjoy or you’re looking for a feel of true Southern hospitality, we hope you feel at home in Statesboro. As you flip through these pages, you’ll find plenty of inspiration and travel tips to make your stay with us as comfortable and action-packed as possible. But you’ll also find a special group of folks and their stories. Stories woven into the fabric of our town—all part of a greater picture. A picture of small-town charm, friendly conversations and local legacies. A picture of Southern Possibility. A HOME AWAY FROM HOME.
These are our people. This is their story.
Executive Director, Wildlife Center at Georgia Southern University
Steve Hein has turned his lifelong passion into a soaring career. His relentless pursuit of his two greatest obsessions, art and falconry, led him to the unique position he holds today. By day, Steve is the executive director of Georgia Southern’s Wildlife Center; by night, he’s a renowned wildlife
Since graduating from Georgia Southern in 1983, Steve has been a pivotal part of Georgia Southern/Statesboro’s legacy. He dreamt up the Wildlife Center as a place of enrichment for students, newcomers and the community. The walls of local and regional art galleries boast his lifelike wildlife paintings. He beckons Freedom, Statesboro’s beloved bald eagle mascot, across the field on every home game day.
From his perch at the Wildlife Center, Steve pours himself into his work. He trains and cares for Freedom and other feathered fauna and shares his love and appreciation for the creatures through education and art. His pride and joy, the Georgia Southern Wildlife Center, invites you to get up close with birds of prey and other native species and maybe even catch a glimpse of Freedom himself!
Bald eagles are believed to live 30 years or longer in the wild. They mate for life, building huge nests in the tops of large trees near rivers, lakes and other wetlands. The adults will often return to the same nest every year, making additions to the nest each year.
In 1998, Freedom’s predecessor, Glory, started a tradition that Georgia Southern still carries today. Through dedicated training with Steve, Freedom has earned the title of Georgia Southern mascot and is one of only two American Bald Eagles to take flight at collegiate football games nationwide.
Composer, songwriter and musician Willie McTell, or “Blind Willie” as he would be known, is given credit for putting Statesboro on the map. While the musical prodigy was born in Thomson, Georgia, it wasn’t until he moved to Statesboro (which he considered his “real home”) that he tapped into his raw, musical genius.
Blind in both eyes, Willie mastered the guitar with his keen ear for music and rare fingerpicking abilities. His raw talent on the 12-string guitar made him unique. No one could emulate his
sound. Willie was soul, blues and ragtime all rolled into one.
His biggest hit, “Statesboro Blues,” pays homage to our very town, one he called his own. The song was and still is lauded for incredible storytelling and brilliant guitar work.
Over the years, we’ve adopted our own “Statesboro Blues.” But rather than a song, our “Statesboro Blues” is a color—or collection of colors, that is. Find these exact shades of blue at our local businesses and landmarks throughout town. See how many “blues” you can spot during your stay!
After Taj Mahal and The Allman Brothers covered it, “Statesboro Blues” went on to inspire generations. Today, the song brings visitors from across the country to our sweet, Southern town in search of the true “Statesboro Blues.” We hope you cherish your time in Statesboro as Blind Willie did!

The rugged and natural lives of Dan and Catharine Bland live on in the stillstanding Bland Cottage (built by Mr. Dan himself) and the surrounding botanical gardens, which used to be their farmstead. Though the sandy soil of the Southeastern Coastal Plains made for less-thanideal growing conditions, the couple worked hard to learn the ways of the land and enjoyed abundant harvests.
They ran a small dairy farm, raised livestock and grew pecans, pears and various row crops. Their success was hard-earned. Their work on the farm was so impressive that Georgia Magazine recognized it as a model farm in 1929.
As self-taught naturalists, protecting the region’s flora and fauna was the heart of Dan and Catharine’s work; it’s evident in the Botanic Garden’s mission to this day. With over 11 acres of natural beauty yielding both native and heritage plants
and over 20 protected species, all are invited to wander woodland trails, explore heritage sites and relive the rural farm life of Dan and Catharine.
Visit during the spring or summer and enjoy the vibrant florals of the South, like camellias, azaleas, roses and magnolias.
The Botanic Garden offers more than just gardens and immersive agriculture. It holds countless stories of the past. The Oak Grove Schoolhouse offers a peek into the lives of 19th-century rural students. It’s one of very few one-room schoolhouses left from its time. Meanwhile, the Weathervane Barn, once Dan Bland’s Mule Barn, has been transformed into a small exhibit detailing life on the farm during the 1930s.
Tree-covered trails, far-reaching meadows and fruitful farmland make up Statesboro’s vast landscape. Our unique sub-tropical climate makes perfect conditions for a thriving ecosystem where bald eagles roam and banana trees blossom. Get to know the friendly wildlife and expansive horizons of our coastal plains at these immersive to-dos.
Traverse the cypress swamp just minutes outside of Statesboro. Kayak, canoe, fish or camp along Blackwater Preserve’s marshy waterways for a wild backcountry adventure.
Kennedy Pond Conservancy
This family waterpark and aquatic center has something for everyone looking to cool off under the hot Statesboro sun. Parents can lounge in the lazy river while the kids hit the waterslides.
Give back as you explore and study the natural wonders of Carolina Bay’s freshwater wetland. Plant trees, restore wildlife habitats or take a boating excursion while you take in the open waters, shrub bog, tupelo swamp and more.
Get up close and personal with reptiles and other native species at the indoor exhibit, then take a stroll down the Raptor Walkway, where you’ll encounter native raptors like the red-tailed hawk, bald eagle, peregrine falcon, screech owl and more.
Don’t miss live wildlife displays every weekday at 3:30!
Walk through 11 acres of lush garden grounds crawling with coastal plain natives, protected species, an azalea collection, an arboretum and a children’s garden. These gardens are as educational as they are whimsical.
Hike It & Like It!
This mile-long paved trail ends in the heart of downtown, making it perfect for enjoying a scenic midday stroll or a picnic lunch.
These 2.75 paved miles are perfect for walking or biking. The greenway runs along the former Savannah & Statesboro (S&S) Railroad right-ofway.
“The story of Willow Hill is an American story,” according to Dr. Alvin Jackson, who has made it his life’s mission to preserve the rich history and heritage of one of Bulloch County’s first schools for African American children and his own school at one point.
Raised by his grandparents, who attended the school and endured the hardships of life in the aftermath of the Civil War, Dr. Jackson was always captivated by their life stories and perseverance. It wasn’t until he got older that he realized just how invaluable the eyewitness accounts of those who had been a part of Bulloch County’s African American history truly were.
In his pursuit to share their stories and Willow Hill’s legacy, Dr. Jackson and his late wife, Dr. Gayle Jackson, purchased the school building from the Bulloch County Department of Education for $124,000 to transform it into the heritage and renaissance center it is today.
“There is no price on our heritage,” says Dr. Jackson, and his efforts have proven that to be true. Visitors and residents alike are invited to step into the lives of Willow Hill’s resilient students and staff, where the original school has been frozen in time. Visit willowhillheritage.org to request a tour and learn more about the historic site.
In 1988, Nkenge Jackson, daughter of Alvin and Gayle, told the story of Willow Hill for a National History Day project using the oral and written accounts her family had recorded over the years. She went on to win first place in the state of Ohio, marking Willow Hill’s first of many accolades.
Though it was founded in 1803, Statesboro’s success story started a few decades later. During post-reconstruction, the local economy boomed. From there, Statesboro resembled much of the South, with homesteads supporting a thriving cotton industry. Over time, Statesboro transitioned from cotton to an educational breeding ground with a vibrant arts district, making it the charming small town it is today!
Explore Bulloch County’s longest operating school and take in heartfelt exhibits and historic accounts portraying life as a black student after the Civil War.
Be transported millions of years back to a time when mosasaurs, mastodons and mammoths ruled as you uncover the natural history of the coastal plains. Then, head across the hall to view Native American tools, art and other artifacts in the cultural history exhibit.
After putting Statesboro on the map with his soulful tunes, Blind Willie has become a famed symbol of our culture. Visit the statue in his honor and pop into the visitors center to learn more about his legacy.
Inside the visitors center, you’ll find more historic artifacts like tools, jewelry and ancient maps to better discover the way things once were in Statesboro.

Statesboro celebrates its bicentennial, commemorating its first 200 years
Along with many Statesboro locals over the years, Keith Brown once found repose in Statesboro’s downtown comic book shop. After getting out of the military, the shop, “Gallop’s Comics and Games” at the time, became a regular hangout for the college student, so much so that he found himself volunteering his help just to spend more time among the collectibles.
When the shop was at risk of closing down in 2006, Keith jumped at the chance to take over and keep the legacy alive. To Keith and so many others, Galactic Comics is more than shelves of comic books, posters, figurines and collectibles—it’s a full-blown community.
“People have a preconceived notion about the type of people that they’ll find at a comic book store, and then they get to Galactic Comics, and there’s everybody,” he says.
Today, Keith continues to build on the shop’s reputation as a gathering place. Parents and kids stop in for a quick game of Pokémon, college students sign up as judges of board games, and everyone is free to let out their inner child.
It’s a haven for that little bit of geek, dork or nerd that’s in all of us.

STATESBORO MAIN STREET FARMERS MARKET UPGRADE
For 15 years, the Statesboro Main Street Farmers Market has brought fresh and abundant produce from across the region to the community. In 2022, the market moved from its longtime spot on Main Street to a newly renovated facility behind Visit Statesboro.
For over a decade, shoppers and vendors have been at the mercy of Mother Nature. But now, the market is open rain or shine every week without fail, thanks to the 7,000-squarefoot open-air warehouse. The new space, curated by the Visit Statesboro team, boasts features like cultivated greenspace and a picnic area to better serve shoppers.
Whether you’re in the market for some quintessentially Statesboro gifts, locally grown fruits and veggies or homemade treats, find it Saturday mornings April-November on Main Street!
WILMOR FARMS
What started as a family hobby in 2015 has flourished into a local onestop-shop for blooms in Statesboro. With a variety of flowers available all spring, summer and fall, the WilMor Farms booth is always bursting with vibrant color.

POOR ROBIN GARDENS
Growing fresh produce all across Southeast Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina, Poor Robin Gardens started selling their produce at the Statesboro Main Street Farmers Market in 2012 and hasn’t looked back since. Now, owners Ricardo and Jim Shannon carry on their farmers market tradition every Saturday.
“The market is a wonderful and welcoming Saturday morning gathering place in Statesboro and has proven to be a great venue for us to market our fresh local fruits and vegetables.”

One-of-a-Kind Wines
Not only is the Vino 1910 wine selection ever-changing, but they maintain a standard of only serving wines that can’t be found anywhere else in Statesboro. That said, if you’re looking for an all-encompassing wine tour while in town, Vino 1910 is a must-do.
Lori Tidick, the owner of Statesboro’s one and only wine bar, has been key in bringing its elegant concept to downtown Statesboro. Her design expertise, along with Statesboro entrepreneur Michael Blackmon’s vision of an upscale gathering place, merged to bring Vino 1910 to life.
Lori touts the eatery and bar as a perfect pre- and post-dinner spot. Guests often stop in for some light charcuterie and a few glasses before grabbing a bite at one of the many downtown restaurants. They then reappear later in the evening for a dessert board indulgence and, of course, a few more glasses for good measure.
There’s no rush when sipping or dining at Vino 1910. The space was created intentionally as an elevated experience bringing an extensive wine selection and deep knowledge of the beverage to the community. Each staff
member undergoes training to handle, recommend and describe each wine with expertise.
With a curated list of specialty wines and a plethora of locally sourced grazing boards, Vino 1910’s specialized offerings and refined atmosphere can easily upgrade any night out.
At Vino 1910, both the wine menu and the ingredients on each dessert and charcuterie board are swapped seasonally to ensure that only the freshest, most timely flavors are served.

Named after the traditional clay oven used in India’s indescribable smoked meats, buttery naan and crispy vegetables, Tandoor & Tap is Statesboro’s destination for authentic Indian cuisine. AJ Jetwani and his dedicated staff have perfected the art that is ‘Indian cuisine for Southern folks’—but it hasn’t always been that way.
“There tends to be a stigma around Indian food,” AJ explains. “It either looks or smells funny, or it’s too spicy. I wanted to modify the cuisine so more people could try it without changing the flavors too much.”
So, AJ crafted a menu of Indian dishes made with traditional cooking techniques but with some room for adjustment. The product was Tandoor & Tap: India’s dimensional flavors served up family style in an upscale atmosphere. It’s a spot to break from routine
and experience a new culture and cuisine without leaving town.
The promise of authenticity must have struck a chord because today, Tandoor & Tap is a local hot spot synonymous with downtown Statesboro, immersing hundreds of people in the vibrant essence of India each week.
In his pursuit to bring his culture to his community, AJ has created a piece of Statesboro culture in itself.
I wanted to create an atmosphere and experience that would transport residents and visitors from Statesboro to somewhere entirely new.
AJ JETWANI
Spicy isn’t for everyone, but that shouldn’t prevent you from experiencing all India has to offer right here in Statesboro. Ask a Tandoor & Tap waiter to customize the spice level of any dish! Something for Everyone
