Sugar n’ Proof
Rana
Obeidat’s Middle Eastern roots are evident in her mouthwatering confectionery creations: Lavender scones topped with a honey glaze. Semisweet bread stuffed with date paste and sprinkled with sesame seeds. Pistachio cake soaked in rose water syrup. Her creative genius spans the globe, but she can also nail good old-fashioned Southern desserts. Just ask anyone who has tried her red velvet cheesecake!
Born in the Middle East and raised in Dalton, Georgia, Rana grew up with parents who were travelers and foodies. After working as a trained interior designer in Dubai and Jordan, she moved to the United States to pursue her true passion: food. She obtained a degree in Pastry and Culinary Arts and began the difficult task of distinguishing herself in a male-dominated field. Rana continued to climb into more and more prestigious positions, from country club sous chef to
executive pastry chef to corporate bakery trainer to independent bakery owner. Notably, she was a contestant on a Food Network game show, “Guy’s Grocery Games.”
Rana settled in Downtown Braselton, first as a baker at Braselton Fine Bakery and now as the owner of Sugar n’ Proof, a baking and catering company. The bakery opened a permanent storefront in July 2021 in The 1904: Original Braselton Mercantile. Her international flavors fit right in with the changes happening throughout the rapidly growing town.
“Seeing Braselton growing over the past few years into a melting pot of different people and cultures is very heartwarming,” Rana said. “There is nothing better than to be accepted. That is all one wants. I am who I am. I love and respect everyone. That is why sharing flavors and desserts from around the world is so important.
We all have something to offer and a story to tell.”
A recent appearance on FOX 5’s “Good Day Atlanta,” along with a rapidly growing TikTok following, have brought in new faces seeking her marvelously moist cookies and delectable desserts. But it’s the regulars who steal Rana’s heart.
“To see my customers come in every week, even for a small treat, that is support. That is showing their love. When you walk around town and you know who people are, smile and wave, that’s home,” Rana said.
Taste Rana’s breads and desserts at the shop or many local restaurants. Visit sugarnproof.com to order cookies, cake jars, scones and apparel online.

Juke N Jive Creamery
Step back to a 1950s soda fountain at Juke N Jive Creamery in Mulberry Walk. Debi and Russ Yorke created the retro-themed ice cream shop in 2017 after finding no other locally-owned options in their new hometown of Braselton. Now they have additional locations in Cumming and Hoschton and a pink food truck that frequents festivals and private events all over northeast Georgia.
Juke N Jive specializes in smallbatch ice cream, including old-fashioned classics like vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. But one of the most fun things about this ice cream shop (as if the jukebox wasn’t enough!) is the unique flavor selection. Lavender Honey is a popular menu staple, joined
by a rotation of special requests like Taro Ice Cream, Mango Mochi and Jalapeño Cilantro Lime Italian Ice.
The desserts sold at Juke N Jive are made with pure ingredients— no dyes or artificial flavors. Waffle cones are rolled by hand. Fudge is made the old-fashioned way in a copper kettle with real butter. Debi’s sister makes desserts like peach cobbler from scratch.
The Yorkes like to say, “Nothing makes our hearts happier than Jesus and Ice Cream!” A Christianbased company, Juke N Jive is closed on Sundays. Gluten-free and dairy-free options are available.
Visit jukenjivecreamery.com to find locations and hours, order online and collect rewards for a free treat!
Joy Company Market
One of the many places you can buy Juke N Jive fudge and ice cream is Joy Company Market in Downtown Braselton. These childhood favorites add another touch of nostalgia to this welcoming general store, with its rocking chair front porch and tail-wagging mascot. Julie and Dewayne Joy opened their specialty grocery in April 2019 on Henry Street, and it has seen so much success that it doubled in size in 2023! Locals have become regulars, and visitors delight in discovering Georgia-grown and Georgia-made food and products, including craft beer and wine.
After a decade as a desk-bound graphic designer, Julie said she sought a way to stretch her legs and personally impact the community. Connecting people with local farmers resonated with her and her husband, Dewayne.
“We wanted to bring back the small town, old-time general store feel to Braselton!” Julie said. “Dewayne’s dad and grandfather
were in the produce business for many years in the ‘70s and ‘80s with Joy Brothers and Joy’s Produce. We are so glad we started it when we did; both his dad and mom died six months after we opened. They were so excited about us starting the store.”
They source the majority of their products from Georgia, such as milk from Mountain Fresh Creamery in Clermont, produce from Shady Grove Farmstead in Auburn, beef from Potts Bros. Farm in Jefferson and stone-ground grits from Shields Ethridge Heritage Farm in Jackson County. You’ll also
find North Carolina Fraser firs at Christmas, old-fashioned sorghum from Nashville, buttermilk biscuits from Charleston and many more products from across the Southeastern United States.
On the sweet side, indulge in their best-selling Mady Cakes cheesecakes, pecan pie from Southern Baked Pie Company in Gainesville, fruit wine from Sweet Acre Farms Winery in Alto, cinnamon rolls from The Frosted Roll in Braselton and all manner of Southern favorites.
Follow Joy Company Market on Facebook and Instagram for weekly product updates.

DeAnna had recently reached her health goals with the help of healthy shakes and energy-loaded teas, and she was passionate about helping others find the same success.

Located in Braselton West in Hall County, this repeat “Best of Hall” award winner has a rotating door of customers looking to power up for the day ahead or survive an afternoon slump. The shakes replace a meal, and the teas boost metabolism. Specialty drinks are available to target specific interests, like biotin and collagen for beauty. Or heck, do it all with a Kitchen Sink—a loaded beauty and specialty tea all in one!
“My personal favorites are the PB&J Shake, the Dutton Specialty and any Kitchen Sink!” DeAnna said. “Our Kitchen Sinks are a new option and are quickly becoming a favorite with all the benefits of protein, caffeine, biotin, collagen, liquid aloe and no sugar.”

They are energy-boosting teas with an array of vitamins, minerals and aloe to aid absorption. 10 THINGS ABOUT BRASELTON WE Love
For some, falling in love is a slow awakening, a sweet emotion that grows over time. For the lovestruck, falling is like a bolt of lightning, swift and sure. But no matter how you fall, there is a moment where you just…know. Here are the moments when you will discover an unmistakable love for Braselton.
CHATEAU ELAN WINERY
It is love at first sip. A 1.5-ounce pour of Bioterra Petite Sirah has just changed your life. Coached by an expert sommelier during your Fingerprint Flight experience, you can appreciate the red wine’s earthy espresso aromas and even taste hints of berries and mocha in the unfiltered tannins. After ordering a full glass, you leave the Bordeaux Tasting Room, walk outside to the lawn and relax in a low Adirondack next to the fire pit where other wine lovers can chat quietly. The vineyards appear to glow from your sunset seat. Settle in to enjoy your wine before the unforgettable dinner ahead.
CHATEAU ELAN SPA
You’ve just left the peaceful darkness of the massage sanctuary, stepping onto the sunny terrace overlooking the lake at Chateau Elan’s luxury spa. The smell of vanilla essential oil lingers on your skin—one of six scents available for spa treatments. Still a little groggy from the intense relaxation, you lay in a hammock and soak up the sun until renewed energy flows through your body. Lunchtime! Adjusting your plush terry robe, you head up the stone steps, past the jacuzzi and eucalyptus steam room to Fleur de Lis for a health-inspired meal. Later, you’ll finish your spa day with a facial and pedicure. But for now, you’re relishing the savory Carolina Gruyère Shrimp and Grits accompanied by a Chateau Elan Brut Reserve mimosa. Heaven!

CHATEAU ELAN GOLF COURSE
The back nine holes of the Chateau Course are a symphony of natural beauty–undulating Georgia foothills dotted with tree-lined fairways, meandering water features and serene wildlife. You approach the final hole with a crescendo of emotions. The swing, the contact and the flight of the ball led to this moment. With the round complete, a sense of accomplishment washes over you and there’s a quiet pride in conquering the challenging course. It’s time to celebrate, share stories and savor the day’s highlights. A Patio Peach Punch awaits you at Sarazen’s Bar & Grille on the spectacular porch, where panoramic views crown the day’s triumphs.
BRASELTON TROLLEY
As the trolley approaches your stop, the blue arrow moves across your phone’s screen. Though you may have ridden the trolley plenty of times, it still feels like you’re embarking on an adventure! Boarding the cheerful red trolley, you slip into a wooden bench seat. The driver asks where you’ll be heading this weekend–perhaps dining in Historic Downtown, shopping at the farmers market or antique festival or exploring the Cocktail Trail or Mulberry RiverWalk? All of the above, please! With a ring of the trolley bell, you’re off. (Download the trolley tracker at www.braseltontrolley.com.)

HISTORIC DOWNTOWN BRASELTON
As you arrive downtown, you pass the original brick mercantile built by the Braselton brothers in 1904— lights twinkle in the windows, beckoning you to the shops and eateries inside. Exiting the trolley on Davis Street, you take your time exploring boutiques, antiques, taprooms and dinner menus on both sides of Highway 53, snapping memory-making photos with the history and art you find along the way. (The trolley stops downtown at the top of the hour during the weekend route.)
BRASELTON FARMERS MARKET
Each Friday afternoon in May through September, Braselton area farmers and vendors gather on the Town Green to sell locally grown produce, fresh eggs, pastureraised meat, roasted coffee, jerky, and baked and canned goods. Follow Mrs. Happy Homemaker’s Facebook or Instagram page to find seasonal recipes. She is among the many friendly, smiling faces you meet while filling your canvas tote with fresh summer veggies. (Trolley service begins at 4 p.m. on Fridays, just in time for the farmers market.)
7
BRASELTON ANTIQUE & ARTISAN FESTIVAL
In April and October, downtown overflows with over 300 antique dealers and artisans selling handmade creations. There is no better time for an outdoor festival in North Georgia. Sip a fresh-squeezed lemonade as you stroll under a canopy of trees in Braselton Park and shop to your heart’s content. (Besides its regular route, the trolley runs a parking shuttle and picks up hotel guests by request during the antique festivals.)
MULBERRY RIVERWALK
Gnarled, old-growth trees stretch over the trail along the Mulberry River. The recently restored riverbanks are still filling in with vegetation, so sandy beaches are easily accessible for wading into the fresh North Georgia mountain water. Bathe in the serenity of this 4.4 mile, out and back walk and take an Instaworthy photo with Mother Earth at the trailhead. (Request a special trolley stop at the trailhead near the Falls of Braselton neighborhood.) 8
COCKTAIL TRAIL
The Braselton Visitors Bureau has done the difficult work of finding the best handcrafted cocktails in town. Your friends downloaded the map online and are checking out a new stop each month. Tonight’s destination: Louis’ House of Bourbon, with its Gatsby-esque, speakeasy vibe. At the end of the night, you reflect that it’s not just the memorable drinks but the unforgettable time with friends that keeps you returning to the Cocktail Trail. (The trolley serves all locations on the trail, including Historic Downtown, Chateau Elan Winery and Resort and Mulberry Walk. Find them all at explorebraselton.com/cocktail-trail.)
10
PETIT WEEK
After picking up your VIP tickets at Will Call, you begin your first motorsports racing experience at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta. You’ve arrived on Friday morning of Petit Week, the day before the final 10-hour endurance race of international acclaim—Petit Le Mans. The 1,000-acre park is already covered with fans, media, crew and track staff. Colorful, spaceship-like prototype vehicles fly around Turn 11 as you ride a golf cart taxi toward Michelin Tower. Crew members chatter in a dozen languages as they ready their cars in the Tower Paddock for the upcoming races. Walking right up to the tent where these professionals work on such beautiful, complex machines is exhilarating. After perusing the paddock, you cross the walkover bridge as cars thunder beneath your feet. You take in the Corvette, BMW, Cadillac, Hyundai and Porsche corrals, stopping to watch the race at different points around the track before buying a very Southern T-shirt in the Fan Zone–“It’s Race Day, Y’all!” Back at the Podium Club for a late lunch, you snag a table next to the floorto-ceiling windows. It feels like you can reach out and touch the track. You think that this may be the best spot to enjoy the rest of the race weekend, with beer and buffet at hand. Ohhh, yeah.
Eat. Walk. Repeat.
The Tasty Tours of Downtown Braselton
A Decade of Decadence
Braselton has proudly embraced our reputation as a destination for luxury, incredible dining and unique shopping. We also love highlighting the hospitality and small-town vibe that have been our cornerstones for generations. By combining those things, we create unforgettable events and experiences that draw visitors from all over. Our Braselton Chocolate Walk is one of our most beloved (and walkable) events. For the past 10 years, chocolate lovers have meandered through our downtown, visiting shops and restaurants to sample chocolates of all kinds. Meanwhile, downtown business owners have opened their doors to celebrate community and confections.
The 2025 Chocolate Walk anticipates selling 250 tickets, showing the incredible popularity of the event that started much smaller. The original Chocolate Walk began as an impromptu idea highlighting Braselton’s inviting downtown scene and sold around 50 tickets. To no one’s surprise, the event was a hit and continues to draw more participants yearly.
“What I love most about this walk is how our local businesses go above and beyond to craft unique and delightful chocolate creations. They make the experience very special,” says Amy Pinnell, Community Development Director for the Town.
A newer element to the walk has attendees selecting top stops that they considered to be the most fun and offered up their favorite chocolate creation. In 2024, the first and second place winners for the Best Bites
category were Local Station and Joy Company Market. Bringing home the gold for first and second place in the Most Fun category were Braselton Brewing Company and House of Boykin. Who will win next year? You’ll have to join the walk and see!
Our 10th annual Chocolate Walk in February of 2024 was a record-breaker. Tickets sold out in mere minutes, as the whole town was eager to attend the chocolatecovered bash! Wanting to satisfy the sweet tooths of those who weren’t quite quick enough to grab a ticket, the first 100 people to reach the concession stand on the Town Green scored a bonus chocolate goodie bag! Hot chocolate, downtown shopping deals and craft cocktails featuring tasty temptations were also available to all. Attendees also visited the selfie station and took home buttons, cups and stylish swag commemorating the 10th anniversary of the town’s beloved Chocolate Walk! Grab your ticket early and join in the chocolatey fun.

Sips You Can’t Resist
Spend any time here, and you will learn that Braselton is a town that loves wine. Of course, we had to design a walkable event centered around the grapey goodness we love to sip.
Our annual Wine Walk invites sippers to stroll downtown, visit local shops and enjoy a little treat while sampling fantastic wines. Each establishment provides walkers with a taste of wine and a tantalizing bite of food paired to perfection. Experts behind-the-scenes aid each establishment in serving an ideal wine to match its specially prepared dish, going above and beyond to make the Wine Walk a culinary delight for attendees. Each wine offered is accessible and affordable, so attendees can find a new favorite without traveling to Tuscany. So, sample to your heart’s content and find a wine for you that’s worth bringing home! Participants leave the event with a list of favorite wines and a custom souvenir wine cup to commemorate their experience.
Kind of a Big Squeal
Suppose some utterly delicious, sweet maple-coated slices of bacon are calling your name. You simply must grab a ticket for our Cravin’ Bacon Walk in early December. This ideal evening is a fun and funky way to kick off the holidays and take a break from the bustle. Bacon walkers will receive a map of participating businesses as they travel to each location for a mouthwatering bacon treat. We don’t blame you if you need more than just the one irresistibly delicious bacon bite! Purchasers of VIP tickets, yes, Very Important Pigs, receive added bang for their buck! VIP tickets
grant private access to the bourbon tasting at exclusive locations sprinkled throughout downtown. This is one scavenger hunt you will want to experience. If you ask us, it’s worth every penny. After all, it’s not often you can confidently proclaim yourself a “Very Important Pig.”
Braselton West Wine Hop
Do you want all the fun but less walking?
Let Braselton take care of some unique transportation for you! Once you’ve purchased your ticket to the Braselton West Wine Hop, hop aboard the Braselton Trolley, your adorable ride throughout this evening excursion.
Stopping at various sipping stations throughout Braselton West, participants will be introduced to more unique small businesses, shops and restaurants alongside their welcoming owners. Like the Downtown Wine Walk, sippers will receive a tasting of wine with a precisely paired small bite at each wine-tasting station and a souvenir wine tumbler to memorialize the evening! This rolling wine tour is one of our favorite ways to get a feel for Braselton West!
A Toast to Braselton
Aside from the outdoor escapades and festive walks hosted annually, the Downtown Development Authority works tirelessly to enhance the charm and character of Downtown Braselton. Sometimes, it is in the form of a good old-fashioned gala. As winter fades and springtime comes around, community members look forward to the Toast to Braselton fundraiser each year. Be prepared; this yearly bash sells out quickly as event goers anticipate fun themes, auctions for specialty items and reserve tables—all the makings of a glamorous evening for a good cause. From Groovy '70s to Wild West inspiration or a Roaring '20s homage, there’s no telling what funky gear you’ll have to dig out of your closet for this night of nonstop celebration. Through sponsors, sold-out tickets, thrilling auctions and additional sales, funds generated through the Toast are poured back into Braselton and future downtown development projects. Cheers to that!

Downtown for the love of
Love notes are everywhere in Downtown Braselton. They’re painted on walls, embedded in sidewalks and even hanging from trees. These expressions of affection aren’t just for sweethearts but for the town itself. Every corner of downtown is a testament to the community’s passion for creating a vibrant, welcoming space.
The transformation of Downtown Braselton is a result of the power of collaboration. The Braselton Main Street Design Committee, the Braselton Downtown Development Authority, the Braselton Visitors Bureau Authority and the Braselton Arts Council have dedicated themselves to creating a space that reflects the community’s heart and soul.
As part of the Downtown Design Committee, I am incredibly proud of the transformative projects we’ve undertaken to enhance our downtown area over the years. Each initiative, from public art to the revitalization of historic spaces, is a step toward creating a vibrant and inviting environment that reflects the unique spirit of our community. Our goal has always been to foster a sense of place where both residents and visitors can connect, experience and enjoy Braselton’s rich culture and history.
- Cheri Huff
Expect the Unexpexted
From the eye-catching murals on buildings to the whimsical crosswalks that double as works of art, Braselton is a canvas for creativity. Karen Stremke’s enduring mural on the Community Center and the playful door designs by several artists in the Braselton Brothers Department Store building corridor are just a few examples of the local talent that has transformed the town’s landscape. During a rain shower, visitors enjoy pavement art that only appears when wet, which was installed by the Braselton Arts Council. Thanks to the Design Committee, even the parking deck offers a surprise as Mark Sundermeyer's mural adds a splash of color to an unexpected location.
Non-traditional Galleries
Braselton’s love affair with art extends beyond traditional galleries. The entire downtown area is a display case thanks to the DDA’s annual ArtRageous festival, which brings vibrant colors and creative energy to the downtown area. Eight-foot cubes, transformed into works of art by local artists, become temporary landmarks that add a playful touch to the streetscape.
The halls of The 1904 also house unexpected art galleries. Henry Wood’s original paintings throughout the building bring historical downtown scenes to life from the artist’s memory. Also in The 1904, a Braselton Woman’s Club program called “Creativity stARTs here: A Kid’s View of Braselton” inspires budding artists by showcasing a rotating display of artwork by local schoolchildren.
Downtown is the heart of Braselton. It’s a place where you can really see the town’s identity shining through because local artists have poured their talents into these projects
Main Street Manager - Jessica Payne
Connecting Art and Nature
Downtown Braselton isn’t just about art and historic architecture. Braselton Library’s new garden, featuring a children’s area and an environmental education pier, has quickly become a beloved community gathering spot. A dynamic sculpture in front of the library—“Sweet Sunshine” by J. Doyle Rogers and Logan Berry, commissioned by the Braselton Arts Council—invites residents and visitors to relax, read and connect with nature.
Artwork strengthens a community’s character by beautifying its landscape, stimulates learning and thought, and enhances the quality of life. In short, artwork sets a community apart by telling its shared story and attracting people to its uniqueness
President of the Braselton Arts Council - Caryn McGarity

AT EVERY STAGE OF LIFE
NORTHEAST GEORGIA MEDICAL CENTER BRASELTON
With a goal of “Improving the Health of the Community” in all that it does, Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) has become an integral part of Braselton. As part of the five-hospital Northeast Georgia Health System, our award-winning, 188-bed hospital offers peace of mind to our citizens and a continuum of care at virtually every stage of life. When you consider the fact that our own sprung up around the Braselton Brothers Department Store—which boasted its ability to serve the community “from the cradle to the grave,” NGMC proves an ideal fit for the Town of Braselton and our enduring spirit of growth.
STAGE ONE: OOOOOOOOOOOH,
BABY!
Labor & Delivery at NGMC
As one of only three NGHS hospitals that house a Women and Children’s Center, NGMC Braselton is well-equipped to usher thousands of brand-new babies into the world. As our community grows rapidly—particularly among child-bearing age adults, the labor & delivery department has grown in step. It delivered 1,000 babies in its first year after opening in September 2016. In more recent years, those numbers have expanded to upwards of 1,600 annually with a grand total of 9,583 babies born at NGMC Braselton as of August 2024. Among those, 1,500 babies were delivered early or with
complications requiring a stay in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). In 2022, the hospital marked an exciting milestone with the delivery of its first set of triplets.
During their pregnancy, expectant moms visit the Northeast Georgia Physician Group’s OB/GYN office’s entire team of physicians and midwives for checkups. This is designed to foster a level of familiarity and comfortability with everyone on staff since it’s virtually impossible to determine who will be on call when it’s time to deliver. In the weeks leading up to delivery and in the days after, NGMC offers three classes to expecting and new parents: A one-day, all-day Childbirth Education class that includes a tour of the facilities and everything they’ll need to know to prepare for their “big day;” a Lactation class taught by breastfeeding experts who helped NGMC Braselton earn its status as a Georgia 5-Star Hospital for breastfeeding; and a New Parents class. To register for classes, please visit nghs.com
On the day of their delivery, comfort is key. Mom enjoys hotel-style amenities, including optional aromatherapy, a comfortable sofa bed for Dad, a private bath with hydrotherapy shower and a built-in music interface. Those who require a C-section deliver in state-of-theart C-section suites. All Women & Children’s units are “locked units.” To protect the safety of Mom and Baby, only parent-approved visitors who have checked in with security are allowed access.
“Our team is family-centered,” said Megan Cargile, Director of Women & Children’s at NGMC Braselton. “To support moms in any way we can, our team customizes care based on what their patients desire for their birth experience while ensuring safety for both mom and baby. That runs the gamut from epidurals to alternative pain management like nitrous oxide. The result is amazing outcomes with a low C-section rate. Our team of physicians and midwives is truly phenomenal. Whether in the community since our department’s launch or having recently joined us from a neighboring community, they are all compassionate, highly skilled and in tune with their patients’ needs and wants.”
FUN FACT
The Town of Braselton has supplied onesies with the iconic Braselton logo for its newest citizens, whether official or honorary. Each onesie has a tag that reads, "Welcome to Braselton!"
STAGE TWO: The Tea on Teens
Sports Medicine at NGMC Braselton
As those babies grow, some become young athletes, and the occasional sports injury may arise. While the Northeast Georgia Physicians Group Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine team can treat everyone from age 8 to 98, there do seem to be some common injuries among teens that coincide with participation in sports. These span from mild ankle sprains and general knee pain to more severe conditions like a meniscus or ACL tear, broken bones, a rotator cuff or shoulder injury. With a team of Sports Medicine doctors and Orthopedic surgeons on staff at Northeast Georgia Medical Center Braselton, parents can rest assured that their adolescent is in excellent hands. The highly lauded Northeast Georgia Physicians Group Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine, Longstreet Clinic, Specialty Orthopedics and Peachtree Orthopedics all operate out of NGMC Braselton. The majority of their surgeons are fellow trained in Sports Medicine.
“The days of ‘walk it off’ are at an end,” said Dr. Darrell Scales, Medical Director of Orthopedics/Orthopedic Surgeon at NGMC Braselton. “All our bodies do age, and as they do, injuries that have gone unaddressed
can age that part of the body sooner than it should and may ultimately impact function. It’s important to get the start of an injury addressed quickly. We’ve found that— particularly following a football game—knee and shoulder injuries are predominant. Luckily, we have a robust group of physicians and surgeons in the area who can treat them.”
As a father of former teenage athletes who ran track and cross-country, he should know. When Dr. Scales’ daughter suffered a fracture following a run, she was treated at NGMC Braselton. While the NGMC Braselton Emergency Department was recently honored with a prestigious 2024 Lantern Award by the Emergency Nurses Association, some parents of young athletes don’t believe their teenager’s injury rises to the level of an emergency. Luckily for them, the NGPG Black and Blue Clinic offers
another option. Staffed by experienced orthopedic and sports medicine physicians, the walk-in clinic is available Mondays from 8:30-11:30 a.m. inside Medical Plaza B at 1404 River Place, Ste 401.
Beyond adolescents, the Orthopedics department at NGMC Braselton runs the gamut from elective to trauma. The department handles a wide range of joint replacements, fractures, and ligament injuries in older patients. In order to better serve Braselton and the surrounding population, Dr. Scales is excited to add orthopedic spinal surgery to NGMC Braselton’s list of capabilities soon.
STAGE THREE:
Adults are the Heart of the Community
Cardiac Care at NGMC Braselton’s Georgia Heart Institute
With heart disease as the leading cause of death among both men and women, it’s vital to stay on top of your heart health as you grow older. While the Georgia Heart Institute at NGMC Braselton sees all age groups impacted by heart issues—from a heart murmur detected during a high school sports physical to a pregnancy-induced cardio-myopathy—many patients in their 40s and older come to the department following a cardiac event. Some cases are due to high blood pressure that went untreated, while others may involve abnormal testing, palpitations or chest pains. In an effort to prevent a cardiac event from happening or reoccurring, Braselton’s Georgia Heart Institute performs a series of tests and diagnostics— like a stress test, event monitoring, nuclear imaging, ultrasounds and cardiac or vascular CTs—to analyze heart function and check for possible blockages.
NGMC Braselton is currently equipped for Interventional Cardiology, primarily stenting, which is designed to keep partially blocked arteries open and maintain blood flow to the heart. For more advanced cardiac cases, they will be transferred to NGMC Gainesville, where open heart surgeries are performed. Because time is of the essence in many cardiac patients, to quickly assess the severity of any cardiac event that presents at NGMC Braselton, members of the ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) team are on-call 24-7. In younger patients—
including children and adolescents—NGMC Braselton partners with Sibley Heart Center.
To limit cardiac emergencies, NGMC offers a Prevention Clinic—which offers everything from calcium score testing to check for plaque in the arteries of a patient with a family history to efforts to get patients’ lipid panels on the right track through lifestyle changes and medication. Following a cardiac event, cardiac rehab includes nutrition classes and an exercise program designed to build the heart muscle back up following open heart surgery.
When it comes down to what sets the Georgia Heart Institute apart from other cardiac departments throughout the state, Practice Manager Brandy Brownlee points to its people. “We have been providing cardiac care for this community since before the hospital broke ground—evolving from a small private practice in Braselton with one doctor to a nationally recognized, hospital-affiliated practice that boasts a dozen physicians and advanced practice providers on any given day—five days a week in the clinic. We also have a presence seven days a week in the hospital. The collaboration that we have as a group and the bedside manner of our providers are second to none. On difficult cases, they consult with one another and are incredibly empathetic when explaining what’s going on to the patients as well as the next steps. We are a very close-knit community—our doctors have even treated family members of our staff. They love what they do, and they’re good at it.”
DID YOU KNOW?
NGMC Braselton performs stress MRIs for all five hospitals in the Northeast Georgia Health System, although this capability is coming soon to NGMC Gainesville.
STAGE FOUR
Going Strong Into the Golden Years
Neuro Care at NGMC Braselton
With a sprawling active adult community of nearly 800 homes just a LifePath stroll away, NGMC Braselton plays a major role in many seniors’ decision to move to the area. While Orthopedics and Cardiac Care both factor into maintaining one’s health and mobility as we age, Neurosciences often take center stage. Between its expert
physicians and state-of-the-art facilities, NGMC Braselton is well-equipped to care for everything from mild cognitive disorders to movement disorders like ALS and Parkinson’s Disease. Dementia cases like primary neurodegenerative disease and Alzheimer’s disease are among the most prevalent. However, roughly 50% of the work the Neurosciences team does relates to strokes – which is why the hospital has a rapid response stroke team that is Primary Stroke Center certified. Often occurring due to a narrowing or a blockage in the blood vessels of the brain, successful outcomes from a neurological event rely heavily on a highly trained team. A team trained to recognize and treat everything from a relatively mild Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)—which may be a precursor to a future event—to a potentially fatal Acute Ischemic Stroke. In the event of a Hemorrhagic Stroke involving a bleed rupturing into the brain, the patient will be transferred to NGMC Gainesville for neurosurgery and its dedicated neuro intensive care unit (ICU). Otherwise, NGMC Braselton can deliver a high level of care to stroke patients—from their arrival in the Emergency Department through discharge and on to rehabilitation.
Following discharge for something like a TIA, the patient will follow up in the NGMC outpatient clinic, which boasts nearly two dozen clinicians who can educate them on prevention through diet, medication adherence and the importance of activity to get their blood flowing. NGMC has a dedicated stroke coordinator who cares for patients not only within the hospital but also throughout the region. The coordinator visits emergency medical service providers, assisted living facilities, and more to educate them on recognizing the signs of a stroke and streamlining service delivery.
“The Braselton community sees a hospital, but it’s important to note that it’s made up of a variety of departments that impact the lives of many in the area,” said Michael Glanzman, Executive Director of Neurosciences at NGMC Braselton. “The neuroscience department is really comprehensive and covers virtually everything related to the brain. There’s no patient we can’t care for within the NGMC system. We’ve treated patients who are 15 years of age as well as those who are 90 or older. In addition to dementia, movement disorders, and strokes, epilepsy is a big part of what we do, and it is non-discriminatory with regard to age. Our MS (multiple sclerosis) Department is also growing in step with the need. The neurosurgery program at NGMC Braselton grows more complex each year. We have the right people and locations throughout the region and can get patients in much faster—which is particularly important when time is of the essence.”
Beyond Labor & Delivery, Sports Medicine/Orthopedics, Cardiac Care and Neurosciences, NGMC Braselton also offers an award-winning Emergency Department, highly skilled Surgical Staff, Cancer Treatment, and Vascular Services. Ties that Bind THE
There’s nothing more romantic than a love story where two people happen to cross paths one day, changing their lives from that point on to be forever intertwined. Whether you consider it a coincidence or fate, the power of love often leads to a lifelong connection between lovers and their families. This “Romeo and Juliet” type of plot may seem like it's only for the movies but unbeknownst to many Braselton residents, the foundations of Braselton and Hoschton were connected by the love of two locals. In fact, many generations of Braselton and Hoschton families found themselves subject to the power of love showing how deep these ties bind the two towns.
Many great love stories begin when a man meets a woman. For this story, it was when William Harrison Braselton met Susan Frances Hosch. If those last names seem familiar, it’s no coincidence—they belonged to two of the most storied families in the region, the Braseltons and the Hosches, whose legacies were destined to intertwine, creating ties that would forever bind their futures and their families together.
The details of their first meeting have been lost to time, but what remains is the story of the love that followed. Harrison and Susan were married on December 11, 1867, in the warmth of her parents’ home surrounded by
family and joined by a local preacher. The couple vowed their lives to one another standing before the fireplace, marking the moment when two families—and their histories—became forever tied together.
After the wedding, Harrison and Susan made their home on the Hosch family plantation. Together, they worked the land, built a life and started their family. But their journey didn’t end there. Nearly nine years later, the couple took a leap of faith, purchasing nearly 800 acres near Susan’s childhood home. Just days before their ninth wedding anniversary, they moved into a small log cabin on the property—a simple beginning to what would become a
lasting legacy. And unbeknownst to the couple, their new home would lay the foundation for a town that would forever bear their name.
As they deepened their love through the birth of three sons and two daughters, the Braselton family grew to embody the values of resilience, unity and hard work. Susan was the epitome of the perfect Southern lady—graceful and nurturing, she devoted herself to her children, fostering their success and ensuring their home was a place of love and stability. Harrison, known for his tireless work ethic, instilled in his children the importance of diligence and perseverance, leaving a lasting mark on their character and future.
But as with any good love story, tragedy struck when Harrison died in 1896 at the age of 61. His passing left a profound void in the tight-knit family, a loss felt deeply by all who knew him. Yet, his legacy lived on through his children. His three sons, John Oliver, Green and William Henry, who had already forged a partnership operating a general store that young John had started when he was only 9 years old, stepped up to manage the family’s farming business as well. All the Braselton children embodying their father's principles of hard work and determination contributed to the family's success with their own strengths and dedication.
The brothers’ store would find its fourth and final home across the
road from the family home in 1904. With additions added in 1910, this massive, beautiful brick building became a one-stop department store for anything locals needed ranging from toys, clothing, groceries, building supplies, furniture and more. This iconic store building still resides in the heart of Braselton and represents the product of Harrison and Susan’s love for one another.
Their story is more than a tale of romance; as it would turn out, it would be the beginning of a community. The love they shared not only tied two families together but also laid the groundwork for a future that continues to thrive today.
Now, the intertwining of the Braselton and Hosch families doesn’t stop with Harrison and Susan. In a twist of fate, just a few years after their marriage, Harrison’s younger sister, Angeline Victoria Braselton, and Susan’s oldest brother, William Greene Bartholomew Hosch, also joined their lives in matrimony. While the details of their meeting are unclear, it’s easy to imagine their paths crossing through their siblings’ union.
William and Angeline began their marital journey on August 22, 1872, at the Mountain View Hotel in Gainesville. Angeline’s own words offer a glimpse into their special day. She described how they waited in a room near the parlor for family to arrive and, once gathered, “marched into the front room for the ceremony.” Though she didn’t elaborate on the vows exchanged, her recollection of the celebration captures its warmth and joy as family members spent the evening chatting and sharing in their happiness until bedtime. The following day, the newlyweds traveled to Grandma Hosch’s house at the old Hosch homestead, where they spent two weeks helping with chores like peeling peaches—a simple but heartwarming beginning to their life together.
In 1865, prior to his union with Miss Braselton, William and his brothers, Russell and John, had laid the groundwork for the town of Hoschton by building the first general store in the area. It sat at the crossroads where the Allen Clinic and Hospital still stands today. Their vision for a town wouldn’t come to fruition until 1880,
when they surveyed their land and put lots up for sale. They donated land for a town square, streets, railroad right of way, a church, school, men’s lodge and cemetery to ensure its place in history.
Later, William would relocate his family to Gainesville where he operated several different businesses. In 1901, William and son John formed a wholesale dry goods and notions business known as Hosch Brothers Company. They constructed a large building off the square in Gainesville where all six sons would work.
They say the power of love can bring communities together, and in the case of the Braselton and Hosch families, this couldn’t be truer. From the marriage of William Harrison Braselton and Susan Frances Hosch to the union of Angeline Braselton and William G. B. Hosch, their love forged a bond that forever connected their families.
Today, the intertwined legacies of these two families live on in the neighboring towns of Braselton and Hoschton—two communities linked by history, heritage and the enduring power of love.
Another BraseltonHosch Marriage
The Hosch and Braselton family love story continues through William Harrison Braselton and Susan Frances Hosch’s nephew and little sister, connecting the two sides yet again. Harrison’s older sister, Hannah Green Braselton, found the man of her dreams by the name of William Canning and the pair got married on January 9, 1848 when she was 18. Within the same year of their marriage, the happy couple welcomed their first child, a son named John Patrick Canning born on December 10. Ten years later, Susan Hosch’s youngest sister, Lucinda Rosella Hosch, was born with both parties completely unaware that fate would lead them together. It’s unknown as to when exactly John and Lucinda met and fell in love, but it’s believed that they were married in 1876, the same year that William and Susan moved into the house that is now known as the John Oliver Braselton home. The bonds of love became woven between the two families yet again through John and Lucinda Canning.

Special Events Braselton is Lovin’
The historic Green Braselton home, a cherished landmark in Braselton, has entered a new chapter in its storied existence. Once the bustling residence of Green and May Braselton, this beautiful property is now poised to become the premier event venue of Main Street Occasions Braselton, thanks to an exciting new partnership between Lovin Florist and Memorial Park Funeral Home, which also occupies the space.
“This historic home holds so many wonderful memories and has been the site of many marriages. We are grateful to see this historic property preserved and protected and for people to continue to enjoy life’s special occasions here for many more years to come,” said Amy Pinnell, Community Development Director for the Town of Braselton.
A Landmark of Southern Charm
Since 1918, the magnificent front porch of the Green Braselton home has been a beacon for passersby on downtown’s main thoroughfare, Green Street/Highway 53. The Colonial Revival-style house is an example of classic Southern elegance, featuring a sprawling 6,000-square-foot ballroom, a private garden and a quaint chapel. These unique elements make it an ideal setting for quintessential Southern events, especially weddings. Brides have been posing on that front porch since 2000, when the family home was transformed into a special occasion venue. Now, with the expertise of Lovin Florist, the site is set to offer even more to its visitors.
“The gorgeous historic architecture needed to have fresh life brought back to it,” Lovin Florist owner Brandon Neisler said. “Shane Presgraves and staff from Memorial Park Braselton played an integral part in building this relationship.”
One of the key features of the venue is its versatility. The ballroom, garden and chapel offer a range of options for different types of events, from intimate gatherings to grand celebrations. The ballroom’s spaciousness makes it perfect for large receptions, while the private garden provides a serene backdrop for outdoor ceremonies. The chapel adds a touch of historical charm, ideal for couples seeking a traditional setting for their vows.
Adding Some Lovin
