WHAT'S THE SCOOP?

We are from the south. We are tough. But this heatwave has us struggling. Our typical late summer issues focus on adventure and fun with family, but we had to come up with something to help give us all a respite from the “did you just swim or are you just walking to the mailbox” heat. Hopefully, you will find some new ideas for nighttime fun in these pages. Stay cool, stay hydrated, stay by the air vent.

If you’re looking for a new way to stay active without the risk of heat stroke, consider boogying. In Get a Hobby: Line Dancing (pg 6), we compiled some tips to help you discover the joy of Line Dancing. So, grab a friend and some dancing shoes, and let the rhythm and air conditioning move you!

Learn all about Dacula's charm and allure in our City Spotlight (pg 8). Dacula has excellent parks with plenty of shade, an interesting history, family-friendly activities and delicious food.

As our theme suggests, the real fun begins once the sun goes down! Don’t worry; we found so many ideas for you!!! From We Dig: Beyond the Bar (pg 10) and River Romance: Date Night

on the Chattahoochee (pg 14) to Never Have I Ever: Been To A Silent Disco (pg 16) and Pit Stop: Stargazing (pg 24), we know you’ll find some fun under the stars.

No matter where you are in Gwinnett, there is always something amazing to discover. Should you stumble upon something that must be shared far and wide, shoot us a “reader recommendation” at info@diggwinnett.com. We love feedback, ideas, story submissions and all the great recs that highlight how incredibly diverse and wonderful our county is.

Calling all fabulous Gwinnett explorers!

Share your Gwinnett adventures with us on social media. Strike a pose, flash those pearly whites and tag us using #DigGwinnett and #WeDigIt. We can't wait to see how you're getting your Gwinnett on!

GET A HOBBY LINE DANCING

You’ve seen it on the big screen, scrolled past it on TikTok and may have even heard about it from a friend, but have you tried line dancing for yourself? If not, consider this your sign to try out a class near you this week!

As a dancer at heart (but not in ability), my first time attending line dancing class was nothing like I expected. And no, that isn’t because “it’s not like in the movies.” In fact, it’s a lot more like the movies than one might think! If I had known my hometown Footloose was happening every Monday night just 10 minutes down the road from my house, I would have picked up this newfound hobby much earlier.

My go-to line-dancing joint (and most in the area) typically starts with an hour of free lessons from a professional instructor. We learn one easy and one advanced dance each week, with plenty of time to practice during and after lessons. From there, the dance floor opens to everyone, and for three hours, hundreds of cowboy boots stomp, clack and slide across the scuffed wooden floor as the famous dance scene from Footloose unfolds before your eyes.

Don’t be discouraged if you struggle to pick it up after your first lesson. That’s why it’s a hobby! Those sharp turns, quick pivots and rhythmic stomps take time, but once you master the basics, it’s easy to see why this western dance is taking over the internet and bars and taverns across metro Atlanta.

The first time I tried line dancing, I was shocked at how big of a crowd it drew every week and how hard it was to get through even one dance without running into or knocking boots with a few people. But, as I’ve returned week after week, I’ve learned it really is an art and an adrenaline-pumping one at that! The first time I mastered a dance, I was elated! On a Monday night, I was in a real-life Footloose beside my friends and community.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned as an amateur line dancer, it’s that finding a space that allows you to be a part of something bigger than yourself, even if it’s just at the bar down the street, has the potential to completely transform a regular work week and add some zest to your life!

Know Before You Go:

1. Find a line dancing location near you! Some top recommendations: Mondays & Wednesdays: Brimstone Tavern in Alpharetta Tuesdays: Slow Pour Brewing in Lawrenceville Thursdays: Heretic in Atlanta or The Well in Cumming

2. Grab some friends! Trying new things is always easier with a group of friends (plus, you won’t feel so bad when you inevitably bump into them a few times!)

3. Practice on TikTok: Most, if not all, of the songs you’ll learn the steps to can be found on TikTok. If you want to know your stuff before going in, look there!

4. Boots are a must! Ok, so you can still get in without a pair of boots, but it’s way less fun! I invested in a pair three weeks in and it dramatically enhanced my experience.

5. Have Fun!

PLAY DiG DEEP PARKS A'PLENTY IN DACULA

A Walk In The Parks

Who doesn't feel refreshed by some time outdoors and a breath of fresh air? I don't know about you, but a short bask in the summer sun always helps brighten my day, improve my mood and energize me! Lucky for you, Dacula has no shortage of outdoor havens to explore. With parks, trails, playgrounds and outdoor recreational spaces scattered around the city, here's a park-lover's guide to exploring the outdoor escapes of Dacula!

Dacula Park

Perfect For: Picnics and Playgrounds

Our first stop on the Dacula Park Tour is aptly named Dacula Park! This 76-acre recreation space is undoubtedly a community staple. Often crowded during the summer with families and friends, canines, joggers and more, park visitors take advantage of everything it offers. There are vast green spaces, an outdoor pool, a 1.75-mile paved trail, sand volleyball courts and much more. Pack a lunch and enjoy an outdoor picnic at one of the venue's picnic tables, or seek refuge from the sun and enjoy your lunch underneath a shaded pavilion. After lunch, spring into the park's playgrounds and enjoy your day outdoors surrounded by summertime fun. Soak up the sun with a splash in the pool or enjoy a match on the volleyball courts. After a day well-spent, swing by the Dacula Park Community Garden to see what's blooming!

Little Mulberry Park

Perfect For: Trailblazing and Sightseeing

Little Mulberry Park is for all those adventurers looking to get a real glimpse of wildlife and scenic views in Dacula. Hikers and walkers of Little Mulberry often spot local wildlife such as deer, herons, geese and more throughout their afternoon voyages. This park features 15 miles of paved and non-paved multi-purpose trails. The natural scenery and stunning views can be seen from smaller paved trails that surround the park's ponds or for those up for a challenge, from steeper hiking trails that venture into the woods. The tree-lined paths and trails are dog-friendly and can lead you to a paradise of playgrounds and pavilions. Take advantage of the various trail routes and be prepared; who knows what sweet species you'll meet along the way!

Rabbit Hill Park

Perfect For: Four-legged friends and getting active

Get active and outdoorsy! On a sunny afternoon, grab your friends and family and visit Rabbit Hill Park to get sporty at the park's many recreational fields. You might be a little rusty, but I guarantee you, it'll be fun! The park features many soccer, football, softball and baseball fields, an outdoor basketball court, and a sand volleyball court for visitors to get active! After your big game, bring your pup to the dog park. The playground has three separate areas for small, medium and large dogs and an ample play space for all dogs to enjoy, making it a perfect playground for your furry friends.

There are spacious paved walking trails and playgrounds for those seeking more adventure throughout the day!

Olde Mill Park

Perfect For: A Green Retreat

Last but not least, Olde Mill Park is on Dacula's impressive resume of outdoor recreational spaces. Located in the heart of the Downtown District, Olde Mill Park is a top choice among Dacula residents. Whether shopping in Historic Downtown, popping in for a quick lunch break or looking for a place to catch a breath of fresh air throughout the day, this park has got it all at your nearest convenience! Even better, discover some history in this scenic spot! Taking its name from the original steam-powered mills that formerly occupied the land, the finial at the peak of the park's pavilion is from the original mill! Whether you're a Dacula native or just passing through, you can rent out the park's pavilion to throw the outdoor celebration of your dreams!

Fortunately for you, there's more than enough time left in this sweltering summer season to take a much-needed intermission from the hectic pace of life and explore the outdoor sanctuaries of Dacula. With all these parks and more, the possibilities of outdoor escapades are endless. Whether it's through tranquil trails, breathtaking views or healthy blooming gardens, beauty is in full bloom this summer in Dacula!

NEVER HAVE I EVER... BEEN TO A SILENT DISCO

Don't get me wrong, I've seen the crowded dance floors, illuminated by glowing headsets and flashing lights, each overflowing with crowds moving to the beats of their music. It's intriguing, but I've always been reluctant to step foot onto the vibrant tiles of those hectic dance floors myself. That is until I conquered my very first Silent Disco. Which, contrary to its title, is anything but silent. This irrepressible night of dancing and synchronized chaos enraptured me and my unsuspecting friends, who were dragged along solely for the cause of a good night out!

When we first walked in, tables piled high with headsets of various colors greeted us. Eagerly, I grabbed a pair and slipped them on. Immediately, classic hits from The Backstreet Boys, ABBA and The Killers traveled through my headset, quickly replacing the room's silence.

Slightly unnerved at first because, let's be honest, no one looks cool with giant headphones on while dancing clumsily in a room full of strangers, I stumbled into the open room and pushed my way to the middle of the dance floor. This hilariously unique journey is surprisingly relieving. Contrary to other trips out on the town, the loud music and thumping bass don't intrude on conversation, forcing awkward miscommunications and hard-to-hear pleasantries; instead, it's the whole point of the extravaganza!

We looked around the room to find a sea of strangers dancing happily. Whether shaking off the stresses of the week or unwinding with friends, we decided we could get used to this! Soon enough, the venue transformed into an all-around dance floor, with attendees grooving to their music as they rhythmically make their way across the room for a refill or a quick bite.

This particular establishment offered a range of food and beverage options. When searching the web for your next chance to conquer a silent disco, find a place with good grub because if you're doing it right and truly dancing the night away, you'll need some fuel and possibly a little liquid courage.

To our surprise (remember, we're first-timers over here), the different colors on the headphones signaled different genres coursing through our headsets. You can switch colors, changing your playlist to sync up to the soundtracks of your friends or those around you. The room was abuzz with a synchronized flow; listeners in red headsets playfully attempted the macarena while those in green headsets sang their hearts out to the soulful ballads of Adele.

Even more comforting to my friends and me was that we didn't have to be truly alone dancing to the music! As the night continued, we became one with the dancefloor, joining those around us in impromptu group performances of upbeat classics all night. We were already planning our next silent disco debut before our feet were out the door. I'm not a professional, but I would say I'm well on my way; here are some helpful tips and tricks to navigate your next, or first, silent disco!

1. Let Loose! This is a judgment-free zone. Leave your jitters at the door, and remember that everyone's there to have a good time!

2. Bring some friends. Even if you have totally different taste in music, you and your friends can break a sweat on the dance floor together!

3. Be prepared for a good laugh. Watching a bunch of people get their groove on in silence can be awkward but also downright hilarious. Embrace it!

4. Be yourself. Switch to the channel that best matches your music taste to fully immerse yourself in some familiar soundtracks and let the good times roll!

If you're still on the fence about giving silent discos a try, I'll leave you with just one question. When was the last time you could truly dance like no one was watching or belt out your own rendition of "Don't Stop Believing" without anyone batting an eye, no matter how off-key you might be? Exactly! Give this unconventional night out a try, and I can promise by the end, it will be harder to part with those headphones than you think!

CRAVE CRAVE IN SEASON: FRIDGE PICKLES

Here for a good BRINE:

I don’t know about you, but every now and then, I come across a food that brings me an instant haze of nostalgia. In my 40 years on earth, I have rarely turned down a pickle of any variety. I get my love of them from my Nonnie, who could wield spices, vinegar and salt like a magician. Any time I feel like I need a fresh, salty, crunchy treat, I reach for the tried-and-true ingredients that I remember so well.

*Fridge pickles can be made with a variety of veggies found at local markets in the summer. You can make this recipe with sliced beets, onions and cucumbers, or okra.

Here's a simple recipe for refrigerator pickles:

You will need:

• 1 1/2 cups of water

• 1 1/4 cups of white vinegar

• 2 tablespoons of salt

• 2 tablespoons of sugar

• 4 cups of cucumbers, sliced

• 1 cup of sliced onions

• 4 garlic cloves, peeled and smashed

• 1 teaspoon of whole black peppercorns

• 1 teaspoon of mustard seeds

• 1/2 teaspoon of red pepper flakes (optional)

• Fresh dill (optional)

Instructions

Step 1

In a saucepan, combine water, vinegar, salt, and sugar. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring until the salt and sugar are dissolved. Remove from heat and let the brine cool to room temperature.

Step 2

In a large bowl, combine the sliced cucumbers, sliced onions, garlic, black peppercorns, mustard seeds, and red pepper flakes (if using).

Step 3

Pour the cooled brine over the cucumber mixture. If desired, add a few sprigs of fresh dill to the mixture.

Step 4

Stir to ensure the cucumbers are fully submerged in the brine.

Step 5

Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 24 hours before enjoying.

These refrigerator pickles will keep in the refrigerator for up to a month. They're perfect for adding a tangy crunch to sandwiches and burgers or enjoying as a tasty snack on a hot summer day!

TIPSY: ROOFTOP BARS

Roaming the Rooftops: As our pursuit to unravel Gwinnett’s nightlife scene persists, we feel that when the sun sets and the night begins, there's no better place to toast in the town than from the scenic perch of a rooftop bar. Taking the nightlife scene by storm, here are some of our favorite elevated venues to enjoy your beverage with a view while the night is still young.

The Rooftop

Therooftopsugarhill.com

Instagram: @therooftopsugarhill

The Rooftop may be relatively new to the nightlife scene in Gwinnett County since its opening in 2023, but it's certainly been picking up notice. This rooftop is a homey retreat for live music lovers and those who want to gather with friends. The Rooftop owners, Jennifer and Jeff, envisioned their establishment as a way to share their love for live music with their community. With back-to-back nights of captivating live music and performances, who’s to say you can't be comfortable while jamming out? Come for a show at The Rooftop, settle in on a plush leather couch and wrap yourself in a cozy blanket while the sweet sounds of live music travel through the air—the happiest medium of all time, a relaxing yet upbeat Friday night. Sip on an excellent craft beer or a specialty cocktail while you treat yourself to a scenic night out! Gather some friends, head up to The Rooftop (literally) and start your night with the harmonic tunes of live music and the clinking of glasses!

Overstory Rooftop Bar

Overstoryrooftop.com

Instagram: @overstoryrooftop

While the streets of Gwinnett County are hustling and bustling, remember to take advantage of everything happening up above! Situated atop the Westin Gwinnett in the Gas South District, Overstory provides an elegant and contemporary drinking and dining experience to all guests who journey to the top floor. With three separate bar areas and decorated terraces, the artful details delight down to the last drop. If the bar itself is elevated, the drinks should be too! Energetic cocktails include a range of vibrant ingredients such as orange spiced syrup, lavender house soda, turmeric and tropical fruit. I'll take one of each, please! Get your fill of something sweet, savory, crunchy or soft to accompany your flavorful beverage of choice amongst Overstory's enchanting menu of shareable

bites and appetizers. Hankering for some South American flavor? Order some arepas or empanadas for the table. Or take it Aperitivo style with some Italian influence and a snack trio for all to share. Word on the street is that Overstory is both a romantic retreat to bring that special someone and an ideal spot for groups of friends beginning their nightly journeys, eager to see where the night takes them. No matter who joins you on this top-of-the-world terrace, it will surely be a classy affair complete with mouthwatering plates and pleasing drinks.

McCray's Tavern Mccraystavern.com/lawrenceville Instagram: @mccraystavernlawrenceville

Have we mentioned that the perfect way to spend a night out involves you, your chosen entourage and a table with a panoramic view of the happening city below? I thought so! But, if it has yet to get through to you, pull up a chair at McCray's Tavern. McCray's is located in the heart of the square, providing all the lucky visitors with a scenic birds-eye view of Lawrenceville. The laid-back atmosphere may be the missing piece to your relaxed Friday night in or spontaneous Saturday night out! This American-style pub is the perfect scene to make the most of outdoor dining this summer, meet some friends after work and toast to the classic Lawrenceville sunset we all know and love! Choose from an extensive list of craft beer or wine, specialty cocktails or a staple one-of-a-kind bourbon to complete your night out with stunning views.

One thing is certain: whichever refreshment you choose to sip with a skyline view will not disappoint. All of these skyline lounges and more are begging to be explored all summer long, so gather up your crew and hit the town. I'll cheers to that!

TASTE TEST: BRUNCH APOTHECARY

2595 Fence Rd NE, Dacula, GA 30019

Facebook: The Brunch Apothecary

Instagram: @thebrunchapothecary

Open since March 2016, the Brunch Apothecary is the brainchild of husband-and-wife Rico and Katie Cunnington, owners of Rico's World Kitchen in Buford. The Cunningtons have a knack for repurposing historic spaces, and their latest venture is no exception. Nestled in a charming Folk Victorian country house dating back to 1905, Brunch Apothecary exudes cozy Southern charm from the moment you step through the door. It feels like stepping into your grandparents' home, complete with warm hospitality from the staff, who feel more like family than employees.

Now, onto the main event! The food, duh! Brunch Apothecary boasts an impressive menu featuring a wide array of brunch classics, from savory to sweet. Whether you're in the mood for Cajun Shrimp & Grits or the famous Chicken & Waffles, there's something to satisfy every craving. Rumor has it that they churn out over 200 biscuits on a typical Saturday brunch – a testament to their dedication to quality and freshness.

During my recent visit, I found myself torn between all the options, but in the end, I opted for the Steak & Eggs, while my dining companion went for the Farmhouse Breakfast. Let me tell you, we were not disappointed! The flavors were exquisite, and the portions were generous – we left feeling satisfied and planning our next visit. Admittedly, I dug in before I even got to snap a picture. I should know better that the "phone eats first," but y’all, I just couldn’t wait!

While we couldn't possibly sample the entire menu in one sitting, that just means there's plenty more deliciousness to discover on future visits. I've already got my eye on the Southern Smothered Biscuit for round two! So, dear readers, if you're looking for a brunch experience that's equally delicious and delightful, look no further than Brunch Apothecary. Trust me, your taste buds will thank you!

PIT STOP STARGAZING

When you think of metro Atlanta, you probably think about bustling city life, historic landmarks, and vibrant culture. But, have you ever wondered, surrounded by the city’s bright lights, where you can make a pit stop and stargaze? If so, this one’s for you! Let’s get stargazing.

For our first pit stop, did you know Georgia Tech usually hosts public nights once a month when the weather is clear for stargazing? Now you know! Head to the Georgia Tech Observatory on Ferst Dr. NW and check out their astronomy.gatech.edu/Observatory.php website for more information. The next public night will be in the Fall, and you can expect the schedule to be released on August 1st. Visit their website for an updated schedule, driving directions, an invite to join their email list and more!

Along with the Georgia Tech Observatory, a couple of museums offer their own observatories: Fernbank Science Center & Tellus Science Museum. Fernbank’s observatory has the largest telescope in the southeastern United States (cool, right?) and offers observations free to the public every Thursday and Friday from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m., weather permitting. Yes, you read that right - this observatory is completely free! For more information, visit their Facebook page @Fernbank Science Center. While they don’t have the largest telescope in the southeastern US, Tellus Science Museum’s observatory in Cartersville still allows viewers to explore the Moon and planets in our solar system with their 20-inch telescope. They also have observatory tours, special events and astronomy workshops! Admission to the Tellus Science Museum’s

observatory can be purchased alongside general admission tickets. For more information, visit tellusmuseum.org

We’ve given you three great options to stargaze using a telescope in an observatory, but what about spots where you can stargaze on your own and just be out in nature? We bet you didn’t know there is an astronomy village set up by stargazers - 11 acres with lots sold to amateur astronomers and electrical hookups for RVs, campers and tents. Located only about 90 miles east of Atlanta, in one of the darkest corners of Georgia and perfect for personal stargazing, is the Deerlick Astronomy Village, deerlickgroup.com The Atlanta Astronomy Club hosts an annual Peach State Star Gaze here, and this year, the event is September 29th to October 6th, 2024. For more information and to register, visit atlantaastronomy.org/pssg

We also recommend stargazing at Black Rock Mountain State Park, Brasstown Bald, Stephen C. Foster State Park (the first Georgia site to be certified as a Dark Sky Park by the International Dark Sky Association), Jekyll Island and Vogel State Park - just to name a few. Thankfully, Georgia has plenty of wide-open spaces for your next star-gazing pit stop. Fall and winter are the best times to stargaze in Georgia, so mark your calendars, grab your binoculars or a telescope, and choose one of these spots to take in the starry night sky.

5 WITHIN 50 SPEAKEASIES

Are you tired of the same old bars and drink choices? Prepare to reignite your spark as you step back in time to the roaring twenties, when nightlife was risky, thrilling and whimsical. While the times have changed dramatically since then, speakeasies are still very much alive, especially in the great city of Atlanta. Let’s dive into some of Atlanta’s best-kept secrets as we discover five speakeasies within 50 miles of Gwinnett County.

GAJA KOREAN BAR

East Atlanta Village

Tucked away between a smoke shop and a mini-market, the entrance to this unique restaurant and bar is so unsuspecting that you might miss it. Gaja Korean Bar pays homage to Chef Allen Suh’s Korean roots, featuring unique twists on East Asia's classic flavors and sips. This joint's edgy yet modern design makes you feel like you’ve just stumbled into an underground bar on the streets of Seoul. So look for the discreet blue door, get ready to raise a bottle of Soju and dig into some authentic Korean bites at this immersive experience.

THE ROARING SOCIAL

Alpharetta

Step into the secret world of the 1920s as you listen to live music, dance the night away and sip on some “prohibited” drinks at this speakeasy. This lively bar looks like a 1920s clothing store from the outside, but don’t be fooled. Pick up the phone, whisper the secret password and prepare to travel back in time! Located in the Hamilton Hotel in Alpharetta, the Roaring Social offers a social experience like no other, with boutique bowling, karaoke, music and guaranteed good times.

RED PHONE BOOTH

Downtown Atlanta & Buckhead

Ring, ring! Dial into this exclusive cigar lounge and bar with two locations in Downtown Atlanta and Buckhead. The Red Phone Booth is a hidden gem that will transport you back to the 1920s. Entrance to this iconic lounge is exclusive, as you must secure the code from a member to get in. We’ll give you a little tip, though: talk to a nearby hotel concierge; if they’re feeling generous, they might just help you out. The Red Phone Booth encourages guests to dress to impress so they can feel fully immersed in this world of imagination, fun and intrigue inspired by the Roaring Twenties.

JOJO’S BELOVED Midtown

While speakeasies started in the 20s, this lounge takes these hidden bars to a new decade. Located in Midtown at Colony Square, Jojo’s Beloved is an ode to all things groovy. At this 70’s themed cocktail bar, you can sip on a hand-crafted cocktail and let your worries melt away while listening to an all-vinyl soundtrack to bring you right back to the disco days. The bar offers a wide selection, from luxury spirits and classic cocktails to signature drinks and shots.

12 COCKTAIL BAR

Old Fourth Ward- Ponce City Market

Not interested in going on a wild goose chase or entering a shady alley to experience Atlanta’s best-kept secrets? We’ve got just the thing for you. 12 Cocktail Bar is a lesser-known spot located on the roof of Ponce City Market. With views of Atlanta’s breathtaking skyline paired with the modern aesthetic of Ponce City Market, this bar will give you the best of both worlds, seclusion and that classic city feel. This sophisticated lounge offers a list of sensational signature drinks and classic cocktails. Or, talk to the award-winning bartenders and have them craft something personal for you instead.

DAY TRIP: BREAK AWAY AT THE BATTERY

Home to the Atlanta Braves since 2017, the Battery Atlanta has an open, outdoor campus designed for both relaxation and recreation - no matter your vibe. While we recommend catching a Braves game, there are year-round events for all ages, so trust us, you do not have to be a sports fan to enjoy a day at the Battery. Whether you are heading to the Battery for one of their Movie Series nights, taking a free weekly yoga class on the lawn, shopping at the seasonal Farmers Market, enjoying live entertainment or just going for dinner and drinks, one day may not be enough to explore everything the Battery has to offer. Lucky for you, we’ve created this guide to maximize your day trip to the Battery - see you there!

Pro-tip number one for visiting the Battery is to come hungry - there are a variety of food options for all the fellow foodies! With both old favorites and new one-of-a-kind concepts, the Battery has a table for all taste buds. With over 20 eateries, many including social lounges and gaming parlors, your Day In The Life At The Battery could be exclusively foodfocused - and we wouldn’t blame you! In fact, we’d be asking to join. Grab an authentic slice at Antico’s, play a game and drink at Punch Bowl Social, catch a trivia night at Battle & Brew, feast at Ph’East and finish the day with a treat at Jeni’s Ice Creams. Pro-tip number two: you can get alcohol to-go as long as you stay within the Battery, so you can walk around with your drink and not have to stop exploring. For a complete list of how to visit the Battery and slide into home plate, visit batteryatl.com/dine

Now that you know you won’t be hungry after your day at the Battery, what about things to do? Just as the Battery isn’t short of dining options, entertainment options are around every corner. From bowling and virtual reality experiences to concerts at the Coca-Cola Roxy, the Battery Atlanta considers itself a “360-degree experience where you can do everything within steps of the field.” A paint-and-sip experience is coming soon to the Battery, and you can currently enjoy a virtual reality gaming experience, mechanical bullriding, immersive escape room adventures, listening to live music, catching the latest movie and more. In addition to these entertainment options, free events continue to pop up, including their screen on the green, trivia, Tennis on the Turf, yoga and comedy shows. For a complete listing of their events calendar, visit batteryatl.com/eventscalendar.

Last but certainly not least, catch a Braves game at the Battery! Did we mention the Braves won their fourth World Series title in 2021? This guide would be incomplete without a shoutout to our World Series winners, so check the schedule here mlb.com/ braves/schedule/2024-06. The lively bars, restaurants and experiences we mentioned make the Battery the perfect pre-game hangout spot. As you enter the Battery on game day, the energy is palpable and it is an experience that every baseball fan should have. Take your favorite people out to the ballgame and for a day at the Battery - we know you won’t regret it.

LISA’S LIST

OPEN LATE IN GWINNETT

You are wrapping up dinner but not quite ready for the night to end. Where should you go, and what should you do in Gwinnett after hours? We have several recommendations to keep the party going.

Every Friday this summer from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m., you will not want to miss Treetop Quest’s “Glow in the Park” nighttime experience. Enjoy the thrill of a nighttime adventure as you explore their aerial trails and fly along the zipline under the moon and stars! Reservations are strongly recommended. Must be over seven years old.

If the 19th hole is your favorite, we highly recommend a late night at TopGolf in Buford, where the games, food and beverages flow until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. If the munchies hit post-golf, Parma Tavern is just down the street, open until 1:00 a.m. every day except Sunday. We highly recommend the Parma Ale and a delicious wood-fired pizza. If ethnic cuisine sounds more appealing, Seo Ra Beol in Duluth is open 24 hours daily, making it the ultimate after-hours stop. Gal Bi, their marinated short rib, is a can’t-miss choice.

And if you’re still not ready for the night to end, grabbing the mic at one of Gwinnett’s busy Korean Karaoke bars is a blast. At Do Re Mi, you can enjoy a private room and choose from hundreds of songs until closing time at 2:00 a.m. Gen Z’ers will love the vibe at Agit Lounge and Karaoke, where the vibrant interior is complete with original, handcrafted graffiti-style artwork in all karaoke rooms. The artwork is a unique take on classic cartoon characters like Kermit the Frog and Bart Simpson. AGIT also boasts a full kitchen serving creative, adventuresome dishes perfect for dinner or late-night snacking. Highlights include spicy pork belly pasta and an entire squid, breaded and deep-fried.

Head north towards the heart of busy Sugar Hill, where one of our recent finds is the Sugar Hill Distillery. Don’t let the name fool you—you will find fine spirits, tasty German lagers, a full-service restaurant and a Euro-inspired Biergarten. Even better, it’s pet-friendly and stays open until 11:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

An excellent large group recommendation would be the vibrant I Luv Bowling in Duluth. For just 20 dollars for two hours of bowling (15 dollars during the week), it is an inexpensive way to keep the party going. If bowling is not your thing, there are billiards and a restaurant/ lounge for late-night snacks. Weekend hours run until 2:00 a.m.!

And if a sports bar full of rowdy fans is your scene, we highly recommend Hammerheads Seafood and Sports Bar in Suwanee. Open until 2:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, you’ll find dozens of TVs, live music, team trivia and weekend DJs. It’s a lively place to spend your Friday evening.

Locals may not realize that one of Atlanta’s busiest comedy club venues is located just off Jimmy Carter Blvd. in Norcross. Atlanta Comedy Theatre is an upscale, 250-seat venue that features well-known comedians every week. It also offers dinner theater, drag brunch, murder mysteries and live performances. Most shows start at 10 p.m., but no worries—there is a fullservice restaurant and bar for late-night dining.
