GET A HOBBY TAKE YOURSELF FOR A SPIN

When you think of pole dancing, you may picture dimly lit bars and after-hours escapades, but this sport has entered the spotlight as a new craze in the athletic community. Pole dancing isn’t just for nightlife, it's a sport that will improve your athleticism, strength, confidence and overall empowerment. And guess what? Anyone and everyone can and should give it a whirl. It might just become your new obsession.

If you’re the type to jam out in traffic or perform a whole choreographed dance in the shower, pole dancing may be the perfect new hobby for you. It might sound a bit wild to bring out your sexy side after a long day at the office, but it can be a truly empowering activity. So strap on some knee pads, channel your inner diva and take yourself for a spin on that pole.

Even though pole dancing demands some serious strength, don’t sweat it. Like any sport, it’s all about practice and patience. A beginner’s class will set you up for success by teaching you the basics, proper techniques and how to look fabulous while doing it.

The best part of pole dancing is that it’s unique to every dancer. Whether you're looking for a fun workout, a chance to strengthen your upper body or a way to explore your confidence with some sexy and sassy moves, this sport has you covered. The pole dancing community is incredibly welcoming to everyone willing to take that dive and try something new. Check out local studios like Twirl n Shape Fitness in Lilburn or Spice Pole + Aerial Fitness in Duluth for a class that’ll leave you twirling with joy.

Tips and

Tricks:

What to Wear

It's always important to wear something that is comfortable and allows you to focus on the class rather than worrying about what you have on. So throw on your favorite t-shirt and shorts or a cute athletic set to make sure you can move freely.

• Knee pads are highly recommended as some choreography involves dancing on the floor.

• Heels are optional but are usually recommended after taking a few beginner classes so you don’t accidentally twist an ankle.

Get a Grip

A good grip is extremely important when hanging and dancing around the pole. You’ll want to avoid using lotion before the class to reduce slipping. Some studios will provide you with an alcohol solution that is useful for cleaning your hands and the pole as needed.

Stretch and Warm Up

Arrive to your class ten to fifteen minutes early to warm up and stretch before the class begins. Most beginner’s classes will have a guided stretch at the start of class, but it’s better to take a few extra minutes before to prepare yourself.

Dance Like Nobody’s Watching

Dancing can be extremely nerve-wracking and maybe even a little embarrassing for some. Remember that everyone starts at the beginning and your classmates are more worried about themselves than anyone else. So enjoy yourself, show that confidence, and be supportive of your classmates who might be just as nervous as you.

Get ready to brush up on culture and creativity! Norcross and Explore Gwinnett bring you Artober—a month-long canvas of vibrant festivities. From the colorful rhythms of Hispanic Heritage Celebration to the lively hues of Dia De Los Muertos, we’re painting the town with artistic flair!

GEORGE PIERCE PARK

Located minutes from the heart of downtown Suwanee, this park covers an impressive 304 acres. With its countless walking trails that wind through the forest, this park is the perfect place to explore Suwanee’s wildlife, plants and even fungi! We suggest a visit to the park either in the early morning or towards the evening to get a glimpse of deer grazing and taking a stroll through the woods. For those interested in the plants and fungi within the park, visiting in the early fall will unveil countless species of mushrooms growing along the trails or on dead trees like witch’s butter (a unique type of jelly fungus).

LITTLE MULBERRY PARK

Whether it’s a romantic picnic for two or a group picnic with your friends, Little Mulberry Park is our top pick to enjoy a sunset! With multiple entrances in Dacula and Auburn, this park includes 15 miles of paved and unpaved trails and a lake. To get the best sunset view, there’s a spot by the lake with an open field on a hill where you can set up your blanket and snacks and watch as the sun sets over the water.

MCDANIEL FARM PARK

For those looking for a day filled with historical fun, McDaniel Farm Park is the best place to visit! Located in Duluth, this park was once owned by the McDaniel family and served as their farm and home from 1859-1999. You can explore the original barn, blacksmith shed and former house at this park that's bringing history to the present!

DUNCAN CREEK PARK

Encompassing 110 acres in Dacula, Duncan Creek Park is our pick for those interested in getting active and playing a game with their friends. Key features of this park include a skateboard area, 4 basketball courts and 3 volleyball courts making it a center for those who love to play outdoor sports.

CITY SPOTLIGHT: GWINNETT PARKS AND REC

RONALD REAGAN PARK

Taking your furry best friend out on a walk is best enjoyed at Ronald Reagan Park! This park in Lawrenceville features a dog area and covers 25 acres, making it an ideal location to take your dog for a morning walk!

GWINNETT ENVIRONMENTAL HERITAGE CENTER

If you’re looking for a park that’s both educational and fun, the Gwinnett Environmental Heritage Center is our first pick! This park includes indoor exhibits housed at the center that teach kids about taking care of the environment. These exhibits are engaging and interactive to help future generations get excited about learning.

DiG DEEP GREENWAYS AROUND GWINNETT

There’s something so tranquil about connecting with the outdoors and taking a relaxing walk to your favorite local coffee shop. As the rise of urban development continues, it’s frustrating that the only option is to either drive to a local destination or walk on sidewalks that have seen better days. One way that Gwinnett County Parks has chosen to combat this issue is through the installation of greenways across the county. The beauty of greenways is that they connect residents to their community with linear pathways that are actually safe for walking, running and biking. Greenways play a crucial role in preserving natural habitats. Therefore, they not only link people to places but they also enrich the environment. Find a new rhythm as you explore the greenways in Gwinnett!

Eastern Regional Greenway

After a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for August 5th, the Eastern Regional Greenway will be open for visitors to explore this stunning 5.25-mile project. The greenway features a route along the Apalachee River that passes underneath major roads in Bethlehem, along with multiple clear-span bridges. Amenities for this location include restrooms, a parking lot that can accommodate up to 25 cars and a pavilion with a grass play area. For those looking for a relaxing river walk and the perfect place to set up a picnic afterward, the Eastern Regional Greenway is the spot to go to!

Currently open, this 5.7-mile trail is named after Lloyd H. Harris who was a pivotal advocate for the preservation of parks for future generations in Gwinnett. With differing trail surfaces that include asphalt, concrete, bridges and timber boardwalks, this greenway’s design allows for a unique user experience! The greenway also connects to existing parkways located at Tribble Mill Park in Lawrenceville and Harbins Park in Dacula adding to a sense of connection across communities.

Coming Soon

Singleton Park Greenway

Currently under construction in the city of Norcross, the Singleton Park Greenway will feature a 12-foot wide multi-use trail equipped with benches, rest areas and picturesque landscaping once open. One of the key features of this upcoming greenway is its connection between Singleton Road and Dickens Road which will connect the communities of Norcross and Lilburn.

The newly expanded Ivy Creek Greenway features a new trailhead located at 3480 Westbrook Road connecting to George Pierce Park. Conveniently located near downtown Suwanee, this greenway includes a pedestrian bridge spanning Suwanee Creek, scenic overlooks of the wetlands and a multi-use trail. Amenities at this extension include benches, plenty of parking and a bike repair station. Another key feature of this greenway extension is the inclusion of a storm drainage system to protect the surrounding environment. This greenway is the perfect place to explore stunning views of the park's wetland ambiance with your friends and family.

ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW

Date: Saturday, October 26, 2024

Time: 9:00 p.m.

Location: Eagle Theatre

Admission: Free

Ready to ditch your boring Saturday night routine and step into a world where the weird is welcome and the outrageous is the norm? It’s time to get your freak on at "The Rocky Horror Picture Show!"

On Saturday, October 26, the Eagle Theatre in Downtown Sugar Hill is rolling out the red carpet for a free screening of this iconic cult classic. Doors swing open at 8:00 p.m., and the madness starts at 9:00 p.m. Trust us, this is one party you don’t want to miss.

ROCKY HORROR CHALLENGE

Ready to make your Rocky Horror Picture Show night even more fabulous? Put on your party hat and join in the fun with these ghastly games and outrageous activities that’ll keep you on your toes and howling with delight!

1. Dress up in your best Rocky Horror attire.

2. Sip every time you hear “Time Warp.”

3. Before the show starts, make a list of iconic movie props. See who can spot the most!

4. During musical numbers, see who can sing along the loudest and with the most enthusiasm.

In this gloriously bizarre show, sweethearts Brad and Janet get more than they bargained for when a flat tire during a storm leads them to the mansion of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, an alien with a flair for the fabulous. There, their innocence is shattered as they encounter a motley crew of eccentric characters, including a leather-clad biker and a creepily charming butler. Prepare for jaw-dropping dance numbers, rock anthems and a supercharged revelation in the form of a beefcake named "Rocky."

Feeling bold? The concession stand has exclusive specialty drinks that are just as wild and daring as the movie itself. Think concoctions that pack a punch and are as unpredictable as the show’s plot twists. So, grab your fishnets, practice your best time warp moves and come see what all the fuss is about. It’s time to live on the edge and embrace the weird—because let’s face it, normal is overrated. Don’t just sit there like a wallflower; step out and join the celebration. See you at the show!

Originally established in 1960, Lovin Florist is the oldest flower shop in Gwinnett, providing residents in the area with over 65 years of love in the form of flowers. From birth to death and every lovin moment in between, Lovin florist is here to provide not only stunning floral arrangements but also a connection with their customers.

Lovin Florist is dedicated to giving customers a personal experience and emphasizing customer care. Brandon Neisler, owner of Lovin Florist, explains that every interaction with customers is personalized. If a customer is coming in to plan for a funeral, it’s not just placing an order, it’s a sit-down conversation where the staff discusses the life of the person and how they should be honored. This team takes the time to learn about the client and make every single detail unique and personal for them. For celebrations, like weddings, clients are greeted with a champagne toast so the bride and groom feel celebrated and taken care of.

Over the years, this family business has expanded from one floral shop in Lawrenceville to two other locations in Braselton and Buford. On top of that, you can find Main Street Occasions, their event venue, in Braselton as well. Gaining multiple county and statewide awards over the years, it's safe to say Lovin Florist has developed into an incredible success.

Flowers aren’t the only thing you can count on from this shop. Lovin Florist also offers decorations for every holiday, and unique gifts such as handcrafted candles and more. This spot is a one-stop shop for all things floral, unique and personal.

So next time you need a bouquet for a loved one, plan a celebratory or honorary event or need an extravagant floral arrangement, stop by Lovin Florist and connect with their staff, they will be happy to help with all your decorative needs. Join them as they celebrate their upcoming 65th anniversary in 2025. Brandon Neisler owes this success to the constant support from the Gwinnett community which has allowed them to thrive.

NEVER HAVE I EVER... TAKEN FLIGHT LESSONS

As you’ve seen, this issue is all about stepping out of your comfort zone and living on the edge, right? Well, I didn’t just fly with that—I took it to new heights! Buckle up for my high-flying adventure in the cockpit!

As I rolled into the parking lot of The Flight School of Gwinnett at Briscoe Field, my excitement was sky-high. I’ve navigated tiny propeller planes before, but this was a whole new altitude of adventure! Buckle up, because Discovery Flights were about to take my comfort zone to new heights!

The Flight School crew welcomed us with smiles that were practically on cloud nine, and I was introduced to our Certified Flying Instructor, Wahab. He handed me a headset and we made our way to the Cessna 172, ready to defy gravity. Wahab gave me a crash course on the aircraft and the pre-flight checks. And then, with a grin, we were ready to hit the runway!

Before we took off, Wahab asked if I wanted to assist with the takeoff. Um, yes, please! As we roared down the runway, I pulled back the control wheel and felt that thrilling lift-off—talk about taking things to new heights!

During our hour-long Discovery Flight, the sights were out of this world. We soared over Lake Lanier, and I spotted landmarks like Striper Stadium, Georgia Gwinnett College, Mall Of Georgia and even my office! Wahab let me take control, showing me how to monitor crucial gauges like the Airspeed Indicator, Altimeter and Attitude Indicator. It was a bit rocky at first, but I eventually got the hang of it. Just as you should always keep your eyes on the road, the same goes for flying high in the sky. I found it tough to enjoy the sights while flying, so I had to let Wahab take over so I could soak up all the lake views. And let me tell you, the view is even better from 3,000 feet up!

We then cruised over Stone Mountain, circling the “big ol’ rock,” and had a chat with Wahab. Despite being only 19, his knowledge was beyond his years, and he was a fantastic instructor. He shared his favorite moments, career goals and answered all my ridiculous questions. After capturing the stunning views of Stone Mountain and glimpses of the Atlanta skyline, we headed back to the airport. We wrapped up with all the post-flight protocols, ending the experience with an educational debrief.

While there’s no future career in flying for me, I must say this was one of the most memorable experiences I’ve had. A huge shout out to The Flight School of Gwinnett for this unforgettable adventure and for letting me add “captain” to my list of titles!

CRAVE

WE DiG: WILD FOOD CRAVINGS

The time is midnight. Your stomach is grumbling as you slowly and carefully sneak into the kitchen, crack open the refrigerator door and examine the contents. Most people would dig into a pint of ice cream or grab a bag of their favorite chips, but not you. You are a culinary mastermind. You don’t break the rules, you make the rules! From salty and sweet to spicy and sour, you are not afraid to mix and create new food combinations. So when those guilty pleasure cravings hit, what’s your ultimate go-to treat? We’ve tapped into the DiG team’s top picks. Whether you’re satisfying those midnight munchies or pregnancy cravings, we’ve got you covered with our guide to wild food combinations.

IN A PICKLE

Potentially the most divisive garnish in the culinary world is a classic pickle. If you're a lover of that refreshing pickle crunch, we have just the thing for you.

• Chickles (Pickles wrapped in Crispy Cheese)

Heat up your stove and lay down a bed of cheese. Once the bottom gets crispy and the top starts to melt, lay down a pickle spear and fold the crispy cheese around it to make the perfect, crispy, cheesy and crunchy snack.

• Pickles and Peanut Butter

This combo is a classic pregnancy craving and a wonderful mix of savory flavors and textures. Dip, spread or sandwich it!

• Pickle Martini

Taking dirty martini to a whole new level! Add in some pickle juice to your favorite martini recipe and garnish with a pickle chip.

WHEN I DIP, YOU DIP, WE DIP

There’s something absolutely addicting about chips and dip. These combos will definitely keep you coming back for more.

• Nacho Cheese Doritos with Cream Cheese

A satisfying blend of zesty crunch and smooth indulgence.

• Milkshake with Fries

Dunk a hot salty french fry into a cold and creamy milkshake. We recommend a cookies & cream milkshake with waffle fries, but any combo will do!

• Cheez Its with Peanut Butter

Try out this unexpected delight of crispy cheesy crackers with smooth rich peanut butter.

• Homemade Coleslaw with Cheddar Sour Cream Chips

For those looking for something more unique, give this surprisingly refreshing snack a try. It’s the perfect mix of tangy and cheesy to satisfy those dipping cravings.

HOT IN HERE

Feel the heat with these spicy and fiery combos.

• Doritos and Hot Sauce

Douse your Doritos flavor of choice with hot sauce to amp up the flavor with a spicy kick.

• Hot Cheetos with Lime

Those red hot Cheetos just got a little more intense. Drench your hot Cheetos in lime juice for a powerful zing.

• Mango with Chamoy and Tajin

A blend of classic Mexican flavors that is the perfect mix of sweet, spicy and sour.

SWEET BUT TWISTED

Sometimes sweets can be a little overpowering. Take a look at these unexpected twists on sweet treats.

• Watermelon and Salt

Balance out the sweetness of watermelon with a sprinkle of salt. It tastes like a summer day at the beach!

• Apple Pie with Cheddar Cheese

Apples and cheese are staples on any charcuterie board, so why not use apple pie?

• Peanuts and Coke

A Southern classic that will be sure to satisfy those sweet and salty cravings.

WEIRD...OR GENIUS??

If you’re a hardcore food-combo lover, we’re about to get a little more wild with some intense pairings.

• Sour Cream on Leftover Spaghetti

Don’t knock it till you try it! This combo is the perfect mix of creamy, tangy and savory.

• Mayo, Mayo, Mayo!

You either love it or hate it. Add mayo to some of your favorite foods to create some extreme combos. Some people love to add mayo to peanut butter sandwiches, bananas, pizza and sushi. Get wild!

• Ice Cream and Olive Oil

Some consider this a gourmet mix, and others simply don’t like the thought of it. This mix of sweet and rich creates an interesting flavor.

If this has you curious, then the Atlanta Ghosts Tour is a must-visit. Join Atlanta Ghosts on a ghost tour of the Midtown District and hear about hidden and incredible stories of the most haunted places in Atlanta. Learn about a historic hotel said to be haunted by ghosts of a horrific plane wreck, the spirits of the Fox Theater and the stories of a serial killer whose victims haunt the city. The tour meets at Babs Midtown, 814 Juniper St. NE #3 and is a one-hour tour across one mile. Ghost tours are held nightly throughout the year and are rain or shine. To book your tour, visit their website at atlantaghosts.com

GHOSTS OF MARIETTA

Do you think you know Marietta Square? You may have dined in one of Marietta’s well-known locations which previously served as the city morgue or visited the Marietta Cobb Museum of Art while resident ghost Katherine lurked among you. The Ghosts of Marietta haunted ghost tours are year-round on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays with advance tickets required. They also have a “Scaryetta” Trolley Tour only offered in October where you take a 90-minute trolley ride around the historic city. Book your tour at toursofmarietta.com/ghost-tours

DECATUR GHOST TOUR

Led by professional psychic medium and paranormal investigator, Boo Newell, the Decatur Ghost Tour in historic downtown Decatur is another must-visit. Tours depart from Roswell’s town square and are about 2-2.5 hours, covering a mile from start to finish. Tours run year-round on Friday and Saturday nights and every night in October. Experienced paranormal investigators lead the tours and tell stories of current paranormal phenomena still experienced by residents, businesses and even tour-goers. DAY TRIP: WEEKEND GETAWAY TO GEORGIA SAFARI CONSERVATION PARK

When considering the most WILD experience and environment on the planet, of course, an African Safari comes to mind. The once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the BIG Five and experience the Savanna is not a realistic road trip for everyone…but what if you could travel an hour to see a giraffe wandering next to zebras and rhinos?

The Georgia Safari Conservation Park in Madison, GA was birthed out of the desire to promote responsible tourism attractions while encouraging the conservation of threatened and endangered wildlife. The park is for anyone who wants to gain a greater appreciation for these majestic animals, understand their habits and connect with the natural world that is unique to different regions in our world.

STAY: The park offers a variety of lodging experiences for a unique opportunity to stay overnight on the property to fully experience wild times with the animals. Nestled within the forest canopy overlooking a private Savanna, the park has six luxury safari tents with two bedrooms inside, or have a wild time in the ‘honeymoon hideaway’ that includes an outdoor soaking tub. The luxury suite inside the state-of-the-art giraffe barn offers 24-hour views of the giraffes offering an unparalleled experience. Imagine waking up to the gentle giants of the animal kingdom, as zebras gracefully graze just a few steps away from your private deck. Each accommodation location has been carefully designed with African charm, modern amenities and extraordinary views of the animals.

PLAY: The park offers safari tours in open-air jeeps just like you see in the movies racing across the Serengeti and private animal encounters. By seeing these animals up close, the park hopes guests will become inspired to protect their habitats, advocate for their well-being and raise awareness about the importance of wildlife conservation. Each of the stays includes a guided safari drive-through tour with one of the expert guides, a chance to encounter a giraffe and rhino and a little one-on-one conversation with animal keepers and ambassadors who affectionately know each animal's deep desires, tricks and personalities. When was the last time a hotel offered an animal encounter you WANTED to experience? If that’s not enough excitement, Madison is a historical gem where you can take an audio walking tour with 28 stops in the downtown area.

EAT: While the animals are well-fed on the property, you can take a short drive into downtown Madison for all the charm and treats while visiting the safari park. Grab a pizza from Amici Italian Cafe or stock up on fresh French bread and pastries at Patisserie on Main to take back to graze on while you watch the animals graze from your safari tent deck overlooking the amazing views. Grab an app and cocktail from Towne 220 or The Sinclair before heading back for stargazing and being lulled to sleep by the sounds of the Savanna.

"The Wild Is Better Up Close" is the tagline and the Georgia Safari Conservation Park provides truly a wild experience in the peach state!
