OAKDALE LIGHT DISPLAY. The Oakdale light display is among the largest and longest running home displays in the United States. It has become a tradition for many in the Tampa Bay area but also draws some from other states and a few countries. It has been ranked in the top three nationally by NBC’s today show, presented first in HGTV’s All Out Christmas special, and featured in People Magazine. Each year there are some display changes. The highest number of lights has been about one-half million. There are walkways, water fountains, a computerized light show, a huge collection of animated dolls, a snowman about three stories high, and the most popular item–the large HO– scale model railroad. It can run 18 trains at one time. The layout includes city and country scenes with an airport, flying planes and a working carnival. The kids love the double bubble machines and games. Three electric meters are needed to handle the power. Electric bills have run as high as $4,000. It is free and fun for the whole family. 6 to 10 PM (rain or clear skies). www.display.org

Inaugural Food & Wine Festival Success!

traub Park was bustling with happy patrons for the inaugual Savor St. Pete Food & Wine Festival in November. With the ag r e v o backdrop of a gorgeous day, the event was held under tents and shade s&c Photo trees, and included some popular food trucks as well. Over 90 vendors brought delicious tastes of food and wine. There was a food competition early on featuring some of St. Pete’s finest chefs, and judged by local celebrities and food critics. Chef Lee Aquino of The Birchwood Hotel/ Birch & Vine won for her ”Ice Cream of the South” With Roasted Banana Grits Toasted Coconut, Chorizo, Raspberry Sofrito and Sorrel. A surprise pop-up wedding also took place to the delight of the crowd — Tammy Gail (founder and producer of Savor) and her fiance Jeff Wernli tied the knot. A portion of the proceeds from Savor St. Pete benefits the students at the Art Institute of Tampa. MIRACLE ON CLEVELAND STREET. Downtown Clearwater from 5 to 10 pm. This free holiday festival returns for the 13th year when the 400-600 blocks of downtown Clearwater will be transformed into a holiday wonderland complete with falling snow, an ice skating rink, holiday train rides and pictures with Santa Claus. Mayor George Cretekos will kick-off the event with the lighting of the tree at Station Square Park. Festivities will also include face painting, inflatable bounce houses, a scavenger hunt with the chance to win a brand new child’s bicycle, courtesy of Baystar Restaurant Group and more. 34th TREASURE ISLAND LIGHTED BOAT PARADE.

See the dazzling parade of lighted boats in Treasure Island’s 34th Holiday Lighted Boat Parade. The parade starts at 6:20 pm just south of the Treasure Island Causeway Bridge, travels around Paradise Island to the 107th Ave bridge, then back north through the TI Causeway Bridge at 7pm. The boats head over to the Isles of Palms and Capri and finish at John’s Pass in front of Gator’s and Hooters at approximately 8:15pm. There is pre-parade party at the Club TI pool pavilion starting at 4:30pm, featuring Santa & Mrs. Claus for the kids. Food and drink are available. After getting zombied-up by a makeup artist, we all walked from the Tampa Visitors Center to the convention center. There was a large room of vendors, a film and tattoo festival, music, celebrity speakers, and more. Also Q+As, Forums, Music, Meet & Greet Opportunities, and Autographs. Fans attended from all over the world, and met and mingled with their favorite horror movie and TV stars, bought collectibles, and saw new and up and coming films as well as old favorites, and got tattooed. SNOW ON 7TH PARADE. The Ybor City Chamber is hosting its 8th Annual Snow on 7th Parade featuring 10 middle & high school Marching Bands, local dance teams and krewes, all under a sky of snow. ee the miniatures for yourself, at the Miniature Art Society of Florida’s 45th International Miniature Art Exhibition, at the Dunedin Fine Art Center, Dunedin, Florida, from January 19 through February 9. You will be amazed by the spectacular display of miniatures – not only paintings but fired porcelain, pastel, colored pencil and sculpture – including works created by some of the world’s finest miniature artists from around the world. With few exceptions, all of the art is for sale. Over 800 works of art will be on display, including the society’s

popular Permanent Collection of more than 100 miniatures. The artwork is well lighted and magnifying glasses are attached to all of the screens, so that guests may view the detailed treasures. hen we went over to Walt Disney World to Hollywood Studios recently, we knew we were going to get to experience the newest addition to Star War’s Galaxy’s Edge — the Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance ride. What we didn’t know, was the stunning announcements of all the new plans in store for guests over the next few years throughout Disney World. A new Star Wars themed hotel, a new ride featuring Mickey and Minnie (their first, if you can believe it!), new restaurants, a major update to the entrance of Epcot, and much more! Here’s a sampling: MAGIC KINGDOM TRON LIGHTCYCLE / RUN – Based on the movie franchise, the coaster-style attraction takes guests on a race through the Grid on their own lightcycle.

EPCOT WORLD SHOWCASE - The United Kingdom pavilion will welcome the first attraction inspired by MARY POPPINS. Guests will step in time down Cherry Tree Lane, where their adventure will begin. In 2020, the new “HARMONIOUS” will debut as the largest nighttime spectacular ever created for a Disney park. In summer 2020, the France pavilion will offer 66

Summer 2020 will also see the debut of a new restaurant in the France pavilion, LA CRÊPERIE DE PARIS, offering both table- and quick-service options featuring a menu from celebrity chef Jérôme Bocuse. Betting patterns won’t change casino advantage

Dear Mark: What are your thoughts about using a betting progression method in playing blackjack against a continuous shuffling machine? Is playing against shuffle machines ever a good idea? Tim R. Raising or lowering your wagers without the knowledge of the composition of the deck – card counting – does not change the house edge. In this respect, a betting progression will not help you regardless of whether the shuffle is continuous or hand shuffled.

At the end of the day, Tim, house edge will stay the same irrespective of your betting patterns. As for playing against shuffle machines, consider me not a fan. My beef against a continuous shuffler is that they invariably favor the house because more hands are dealt per hour when the dealer does not have to stop and shuffle the cards. From the casino’s perspective, time is money. The more hands per hour, the better for the house. From a player’s perspective, speed kills in a casino environment. The longer you are exposed to the house advantage, the more mayhem on your bankroll. The deal here, Tim, pun intended, is that you are already spotting the house an edge against your play; a faster game helps them, never you. Dear Mark: My game of choice is video poker. his is the tale of two teams. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness. (Sorry Charles!) Welcome Fans, is anybody still out there? What a Disaster this season has been. It was the best of times when the Bucs won their first game of the season. Glory be to God, the fans had hope. Fire the cannons, raise the flags, then before you get to say yea, it became the worst if times. The Giants came to town. What a shame. The Bucs looked good but then they become the same old Bucs. But hey, they almost won but they blew it again. Let’s just blame the kicker, let’s blame the refs. Blah, blah, blah. Let’s put the blame where it belongs, on the entire team. They don’t seem to get it, they have great players, great coaches, the best faculties in the NFL, an organization that backs them, and great fans. How can they score 55 points one week and bomb the next week? It has been dismaying, disappointing and just darn disconcerting. Whatever the problem, they better figure it soon. I don’t know what the problem is, maybe it’s the water. Enough said. It is what it is. We still love the Bucs. We might want to smack them sometimes, but all and all, we always hope for the best.

On Sept. 22nd, Ronde Barber was inducted into the Ring of Honor. It was a well-deserved honor for one of the most accomplished players in Buccaneer history. Not only was his play on the field outstanding but his support within the community was outstanding. He was always ready to lend a helping hand, and we are all very glad that he is still a member of our community.

Although the play on field isn’t very inspiring, the Bucs commitment to the community is. There isn’t a week that goes by that the organization isn’t doing something in the community to make Tampa Bay a better place to live. It’s bringing new equipment to the schools, supporting our military and first responders, providing health and eye care for kids, and working with the kids to show them positive values. Several of the team members have set up foundations to support pressing needs in the area. Coach Arians and his wife have a foundation that supports the needs of children and families. Recently, there was benefit to promote the Guardian Ad Litem — a group that advocates for children in the foster care system. Their next undertaking will be the annual toy drive that can help make a difference in child’s life. This scholarship is open to all female high school seniors nationwide who participate in a formally sanctioned flag or tackle football team. “In Florida alone we have 260 sanctioned girls flag football teams, yet there are no scholarship opportunities for these female athletes after high school that reduces the burden of the college tuition,” said Buccaneers owner/president of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers foundation and Glazer family foundation, Darcy Glazer Kassewitz. The Bucs want to fill that void by creating a scholarship program that would reward young women for their academic success as well as encourage them to play football. The scholarship is the latest initiative from the Buccaneers extensive commitment to connecting with girls and young women through flag football. In 2018, the team partnered with the city of Tampa parks and recreation Department to launch the junior Bucs flag football league, which is comprised of 24 Local Recreation Center teams that each received new equipment from the Buccaneers. Also, through their junior Bucs flag football middle school program, the Bucs have reached 35,000 girls with flag football equipment that was donated to over 90 middle schools.

Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay. The veteran inside linebacker spent the evening at a bowling alley along with 14 of his teammates and big brother of Tampa Bay. Teammates showed up for the Team Godwin Foundation launch. Wide receiver Chris Godwin and his girlfriend Mariah DeiPercio launched their team Godwin foundation, which aims to make an impact for pets in need by providing financial assistance to local shelter and rescue groups, with many of Godwin’s teammates in attendance. The foundation teamed up with the local community efforts to help bring a Marine Corps veteran Ed Wickliffe and his wife Molly home up to code following storm damage. The Annual Treasure Chest Run in November was in support of Breast Cancer research. There were hundreds that came to run, from the little kids, moms and dads, grand moms and grand pops who came.

At the Women of Red Tailgate on Dec 8, all the ladies and other female fans gathered for an all-inclusive tailgate buffet before the Bucs game with the Colts. This was a fun event that included a buffet, open bar, mimosas and soft drinks.

On the Monday before Thanksgiving, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive line and Publix Supermarket provided Thanksgiving meals for those less fortunate at the 13th annual turkey time with the O-line supported by Publix. They distributed for Thanksgiving meals to over 1000 families in need pre-selected by United Way through the Buccaneers academies. The Bucs cheerleaders, Captain Fear, and more than 30 Bucs staff members assisted in the distribution effort. Bucs big brother Lavonte David hosted the fourth annual Bowling For Kids Sake benefiting Big

Collecting Vintage Perfume

oday’s collectors are considering and collecting vintage perfumes both nationally and internationally. While the scents are alluring, the design of the perfume bottles are what attracts one to a particular vintage perfume. When I started my research on vintage perfumes, it was all about the beauty of the bottles and the bravado of the brands. Now, there is much more to the vintage perfume market. A skilled group of sellers/scientists are trying to blend old familiar perfume scents with new additions to create some collectible fragrances. It is interesting and a bit exciting to learn that an interested collector can actually find and purchase a favorite old-school perfume on the market. Would these old perfumes still smell good? Would they smell the same bringing back memories with a whiff? The idea of recovering old perfumes is interesting but it is not without its obstacles. The science surrounding the art of collecting vintage perfume is the real story here, along with the setbacks. Setback 1: Perfumes go bad over time. No matter how lovely or high quality a bottle is –albeit French Baccarat or Lalique crystal—perfumes lose their punch. The shelf life for most high-quality perfumes is about 18 months to 2 years. I was saddened by this fact since I have decades-old perfumes that I still use that date back to my high school days. When I hold those bottles and squirt the atomizer of my vintage Lauren or Calvin Klein perfume, I am immediately back in my childhood bedroom standing in front of my dresser thrilled to be going somewhere fun. Alas, too many years have passed to save the original smell. Setback 2: You really can’t go back to Kansas… even if you were, like me, raised in Connecticut. You see, perfumes can degrade from exposure to light, heat, and oxygen (air). A perfume’s top notes go by the wayside first and then the base or core scent languishes over time. Citrus scents fade very quickly. The floral scents are stronger 94

but they too will eventually give in to old age. Like people, some perfume scents age better than others. Setback 3: Trying to find a full, unopened bottle of vintage scents like Juneve by Reval Langlois from the 1920s, Sycomore by Chanel from the 1930s, or Apres L’Ondee by Guerlain from the 1950s is next to impossible. Why? Most people don’t realize that perfume collecting is a real thing. And this “real thing” is trendy and expensive. These vintage scents –not just the beautiful bottles-- are worth big bucks to a new generation of perfume chemists mixing new and old scents in New York, Milan, and Paris. Don’t forget about the industrious group of new age perfume entrepreneurs who are amassing old, half-empty bottles of perfume in thrift stores and from estate sales that were cast off. These folks are buying them up and auctioning them off online. They are reselling these scents by the tiny vial for a very nice profit on Etsy.com, Ebay.com, etc. So, if you are going all Marie Kondo and your old perfume is on the $1 and under table at your estate sale, you are making a big mistake. The money you lose on that transaction with a savvy estate sale shopper will certainly not “bring you joy”. Is there any hope for collectors who want to wear their favorite vintage scent and have a sniff that recalls a fond memory? Many vintage perfumes are sold online and are, with some obvious olfactory differences, ready to wear. Some collectors are looking for that scent that their late mother wore and paying big bucks to recapture it in a bottle or a vial. Others want to share a fragrance promoted or named by their favorite Hollywood celebrity or Pop star. Either way, the vintage perfume market is alive and well. These old perfumes and their bottles are leading the pack as a valuable, memorable, and somewhat attainable collecting category.
