SEMINOLE HARD ROCK HOTEL & CASINO TAMPA GRAND CELEBRATION to commemorate the completion of its $700 million expansion that includes a new hotel tower, pool and spa, along with retail and dining outlets. The festivities kick off on October 3 at 10 a.m. with a ceremonial guitar smash, followed by a high wire walk for invited guests at 12:10 p.m. between the propertyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s two hotel towers by Nik Wallenda and his mother, 66-year-old Delilah Wallenda. This will be her final high wire walk. The Thursday event schedule will also include a performance by Light Balance, a hitech neon and LED show. The group earned the Golden Buzzer Award during their audition for Season 12 of Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Got Talent and finished third overall in the competition. Additionally, the property will host a Nightlife Party in the new Hard Rock Event Center beginning at 8 p.m. on Thursday. It will feature performances by DJ Jazzy Jeff and Big Boi, a member of the hip hop duo Outkast. On Friday, October 4 at 9 p.m., country artist Keith Urban will perform in the Hard Rock Event Center. The Grand Celebration Weekend will conclude with a pool party on Sunday, October 6 at noon hosted by celebrity DJ Brody Jenner.

This November marks the hippest inaugural food & wine festival, aptly named SAVOR ST. PETE, on Nov 2nd and 3rd in North Straub Park. Thousands of local foodies and guests from across the country will sip and savor palate pleasing bites in this stunning waterfront setting. Guests will enjoy 180-degree views of Tampa Bay while nibbling morsels from the Bay area’s most interesting restaurants and talented chefs, coupled with global and national offerings of specially selected wines and craft beers. With the departure of two foodie events previously staged in the ‘Burg in November, SAVOR ST. PETE is the highly anticipated addition to the vibrant foodie scene on Florida’s west coast. Publix’ Aprons Cooking School Envy Apples for Fall

t’s prime apple season, and Publix Cooking School showed me a thing or two about how to use apples in a full-course meal. They elissa M y b used Envy apples in all the dishes, showing off the apple’s versatilage cover & s o t ity (and deliciousness!) Aprons Cooking School Chefs demonstrated Envy apple Pho recipes — from aperitif to dessert — which I enjoyed dining on as each course was created. The perfect wine pairing was also provided. I also learned a thing or two about shortcuts and proper preparation of foodstuffs. Our class started off with a delicious Pumpkin Spice Envy Apple Cider, followed by flaky Cheesy Apple Sausage Pastry Bites served with La Marca Prosecco. A nice light Shaved Fennel and Envy Apple Salad was then prepared for us paired with a Kenwood Six Ridges Sauvignon Blanc. Our

entree was a wonderful Envy Apple Pot Roast with Braised Cabbage paired with a Seven Deadly Red wine. Dessert was an Envy Apple Oat Crumble & Citrus Caramel Topped delight, suggested pairing with a Dr. Loosen Riesling. Aprons Cooking classes can be experienced as hands-on, where you do the prep work, or as a demonstration such as the one I experienced. Attendees receive copies of all the recipes enjoyed. Our chefs were friendly and knowledgable, which made our evening thoroughly entertaining and tastefully educational! SEMINOLE HARD ROCK THE NEW HOTEL & CASINO CELEBRATION

f you’ve been to the Seminole Hard Rock over the past year, you’ve seen new temporary walls and curtains all over as you try to navigate once familiar paths. The hotel and casino managed to keep running pretty smoothly while a hidden from view mammoth undertaking was going on. Last week the final curtain was taken down and the $700M expansion was revealed at a grand celebration. It is truly jaw-dropping and an amazing accomplishment. The new property is elegant with only touches of rock ‘n roll with the displays of music memorabilia. Golds and crystals are the color and decor scheme. The main new — and spectacular — piece of memorabilia is the acquisition of Elvis Presley’s 24-karat gold leaf plated 1928 Grand Piano which resides in the sleek new lobby. The hotel renovation includes a new 14-story hotel tower with 562 additional hotel rooms and suites; three pools; and a gorgeous new salon with 13 treatment rooms, a hair and nail salon, and barbershop. New restaurants have also popped

up on the scene. The Celebration itself was super, with special entertainment, celebrity guests, and, of course, the guitar smash. The dedication opened with a brillliant performance by Light Balance (from Season 12 of America’s Got Talent), followed by speeches by the principals of Seminole Hard Rock in the Hard Rock’s new Event Center. The crowd then meandered outside to witness the guitar smash, which was counted down by Nicole Kidman. We then looked up to the top of the new hotel to watch Nik Wallenda, of the Great Wallendas, along with his

66-year-old mother, Delilah, take a high wire walk between the two hotel towers. This was Delilah’s last walk before retirement. It all went well and thrilled the crowd below. The party went on for a few days, with more performances in the Event Center by DJ Jazzy Jeff and Big Boi, Keith Urban, and a VIP pool party hosted by celebrity DJ Brody Jenner. new yummy has made it’s way to Largo, direct from Louisville, KY — Joella’s Hot Chicken. We attended a tasting and we very pleased with the made-from-scratch Southern dishes. The chicken is scrumptious and portions are very generous. As far as the “Hot” goes, you can choose your heat level, from “Southern” (no heat) to “Fire-In Da-Hole” (you can imagine!) We also loved the side dishes. Salads and the Parm Garlic Fries were crispy and flavorful. O’MADDY’S 30TH ANNIVERSARY - A NIGHT IN HAVANA GALA. O’Maddy’s 30th Anniversary Charity Gala to Benefit Underprivileged Children & Seniors in 38

OAKDALE LIGHT DISPLAY. The Oakdale light display is among the largest and longest running home displays in the United States. It has become a tradition for many in the Tampa Bay area but also draws some from other states and a few countries. It has been ranked in the top three nationally by NBC’s today show, presented first in HGTV’s All Out Christmas special, and featured in People Magazine. Each year there are some display changes. The highest number of lights has been about one-half million. There are walkways, water fountains, a computerized light show, a huge collection of animated dolls, a snowman about three stories high, and the most popular item–the large HO– scale model railroad. It can run 18 trains at one time. The layout includes city and country scenes with an airport, flying planes and a working carnival. The kids love the double bubble machines and games. Three electric meters are needed to handle the power. Electric bills have run as high as $4,000. It is free and fun for the whole family. 6 to 10 PM (rain or clear skies). www.display.org

CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT IN TAMPA BAY - Thru March 1. Tampa Bay remained racially segregated at the dawn of the Civil Rights era and many local institutions and establishments held out on integration for several years after Brown v. the Board of Education and the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Under “Jim Crow” every aspect of African American life in Tampa, St. Petersburg, Sarasota and their surrounding cities was segregated. Restricted covenants were in place that segregated residential neighborhoods. African American children had to attend segregated schools that were under-funded and often in disrepair. Blacks could only be cared for at “Black only” hospitals, and other public and private establishments like restaurants and beaches were often segregated - if blacks were allowed in at all.

ig Cat Rescue is the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest accredited sanctuary devoted to big cats. The non-profit sanctuary is home to more than 70 lions, tigers, leopards, cougars, servals, caracals, and various other exotic cats. GRAN DESTINO TOWER At Coronado Springs Resort

few years after Walt Disney gave the world the ground-breaking animated film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937, he had what would seem an unlikely collaboration with the surrealist painter Salvador Dali on an animated short called Destino (1946). The two men greatly admired each other, and it was Dali’s desire to get into the film industry coupled with Disney’s interest in surrealism (as evidenced in his acclaimed film Fantasia [1940]), that brought the two men together. However, working together proved to be more of a challenge (for Disney) than originally thought. Disney was more methodical, and Dali was more spontaneous. For financial and other reasons the project was shelved, and not found and dusted off by Walt’s nephew Roy until 1999 — years after the deaths of both Dali and Disney. The project was revived with new storyboards since many of the originals did not survive the years, and released in 2003 to critical acclaim.

Briefly, the story of Destino concerns love between a mortal woman, Dahlia, and an immortal titan, Chronos. Dahlia undergoes surreal transformations in the hope of finding Chronos, and he tries to break free of his bonds to reach her. Large towers block their efforts to be together, but finally, love wins out. The film is filled with Dali icons, but with Disney drawing style. Gran Destino lobby.

hat does all this have to do with the new Gran Destino Tower? It’s because the whole tower concept incorporates so many elements of the film and other nods to Disney and Dali. You don’t have to know a thing about the back story to enjoy this beautiful hotel, but it’s so rewarding to discover nuanced references throughout your experience there. From what we could gather during our visit, every design — no matter how minuscule — is there for a reason as a nod to the Destino story. Like finding “Hidden Mickeys” in Disney resorts, it’s fun to find “Hidden Destinos” at the Tower. The hotel is a blend of Spanish, Mexican and Southwest American, with a lobby that has massive glass windows reaching two stories high for a magnificent panoramic view of the lake (Lago Dorado.) There are 545 guest rooms including 50 suites in the tower. You will find a lot of double helixes throughout the hotel in different shapes, as the helix was a form of fascination for Dali. Guest rooms have clean lines with earth tones, wood-look tile floors, and very comfy beds. Even the bedside lamp in our room had a bell design referencing one of Dahlia’s incarnations. Since the Tower is not surrounded by any tall buildings, guest room views of the lake are fabulous. Guests are welcomed with a personalized name greeting on their room TV, which is filled with lots of different Disney channels as well as cable TV.

The Toledo Tapas, Steak & Seafood Restaurant has a rooftop location on the Tower, with spectacular floor-to-ceiling views of Walt Disney World on both sides. And the menu is excellent as well. Across the hall is the Dahlia Lounge, where one can relax, get a drink and be immersed in Dali symbolism and memorabilia. On the floor below is Chronos Lounge for club level guests where they can grab a snack and drink.

ot to be forgotten is the older, but totally refurbished original Coronado Resort next door to the new tower with 2,385 guest rooms. It has very good restaurants, meeting spaces and fun for the family as well as convention-goers. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a Three Bridges Bar & Grill in the middle of the lake accessed by a boardwalk for a fun open-air place to dine. The new Disney Skyliner will be available soon, which will transport Coronado guests to Hollywood Studios and Epcot in a fun new way. Right now, buses take guests to all the Disney World theme parks. As we said earlier, you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to know a thing about the film Destino, nor the Disney-Dali connection to enjoy your stay at this beautiful new hotel, but it adds a little flavor if you do. Dear Mark: Every so often we hear about someone winning the lottery or hitting the grand prize on a progressive slot machine, but these odds are astronomical! How is it that someone, somewhere, always seems to be able to get lucky and beat the astronomical odds? What I’m trying to get at is that these odds are astronomical, and hence, the jackpot shouldn’t be hit, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Johnson T.

Any jackpot that has a probability of hitting, like, for instance, a Powerball ticket or a progressive slot machine, ought to eventually pay off if it is played long enough. When given a set of possibilities and enough trails, a favorable outcome should occur for some lucky bloke. That said, there are times that I am not entirely convinced that every gambling probability will come to fruition over time. When it comes to international museums, there are some very interesting museums in other parts of the world that make travel and learning about other cultures fun and fascinating. As a regular traveler and lecturer on art, museums and culture all around the globe, some museums require a shout out. Here are some of my favorite places to view, explore, contemplate, and learn. TOKYO, JAPAN: If you want to experience a mu-

Located in the Odaiba district of Tokyo, the world first and largest digital art museum combines art, science, and images of the natural world for a visitor experience like no other. The museum opened on June 21, 2018 and the exhibits are natural world simulations generated by 520 computers and 470 high-tech projectors displayed in five sections: Borderless World, Forest, Future Park, Forest of Lamps, and Tea House. TRINIDAD, CUBA: Guanuhaya Archaeology Museum in the museum city of Trinidad is like most museums in this town, deemed Cuba’s museum city for its number of museums of all types, which is approximately a one-hour drive from the 19th Century port city of Cienfuegos. As you navigate the town’s numerous cobblestones streets and enthusiastic street merchants, you’ll explore the old Spanish Colonial town that now focuses on tourism, which is Cuba’s numero uno industry. Housed in a Spanish colonial building, the Guanuhaya Archaeology Museum boasts ancient stone tools and weapons, Pre-Columbian clay figural sculptures, and taxidermy animals. There’s even a 2,500-year-old skeleton on display! REYKJAVIK, ICELAND: The Icelandic Phallological Museum, that’s right, it is a museum dedicated to all things and some art associated with the science of phallology. An unusual museum, the museum displays phalluses from many different species and other related artifacts. A few tips to remember when you are in a museum anywhere in the world.
