BUDWEISER CLYDESDALES TO APPEAR IN TAMPA FOR GASPARILLA PIRATE FEST. The worldfamous Budweiser Clydesdales are scheduled to make several appearances in the Bay area through January 27th, including one at the Gasparilla Pirate Fest. s the name might imply, the Sugar Factory churns out sweets unlike you have ever experienced before. Beautiful, clever, gigantic and tasty “goblets”, cocktails, milkshakes, and ice cream concoctions parade out from the kitchen, each one more spectacular than the last. Goblets are definitely shareable and are fun to watch being created at your table when the smoking and bubbling dry ice kicks in. The restaurant is eclectic and inviting, with a touch of elegance (crystal chandeliers) and whimsey (Vintage photos adorning the walls each feature one of the Sugar Factory’s treats in them.) White marble table tops with red chairs and banquettes make for a comfortable dining experience. It isn’t all about sweets and cocktails, however, the menu has a nice selection of lunch and dinner options, and brunch on the weekends. Indeed, the menu has page after page of different food and drink. We started our lunch off with 64 oz. goblets (sans alcohol), the “Lolllipop Passion” (melon, coconut, pineapple and lollipops) and the “Fuzzy Peach Penguin Mango” (peach, mango, and gummy fruit slices and penguins.) We ordered the Bluecheese Bacon Burger, and the Alfredo Pasta with Chicken. Both were delicious. For dessert (so many to choose from!) we had “Insane Milkshakes” which are aptly named. Sugar Factory’s Chef William Myers prepared some utterly amazing concoctions for us. We’re still afraid to get on the scale. Gulf Coast JFCS and the Heart Gallery will honor Dr. Marcie Biddleman with the “Diane Granito Heart of Gold Award” at their annual Heartstrings Luncheon at Feather Sound Country Club. Diane Granito established the first Heart Gallery in 2001 to raise awareness about adoption and to find homes for older children and sibling groups in protective custody. ig Cat Rescue is the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest accredited sanctuary devoted to big cats. The non-profit sanctuary is home to more than 70 lions, tigers, leopards, cougars, servals, caracals, and various other exotic cats. hen we went over to Walt Disney World to Hollywood Studios, we knew we were going to get to experience the newest addition to Star War’s Galaxy’s Edge — the Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance ride. What we didn’t know, was the stunning announcements of all the new plans in store for guests over the next few years throughout Disney World. A new Star Wars themed hotel, a new ride featuring Mickey and Minnie (their first, if you can believe it!), new restaurants, a major update to the entrance of Epcot, and much more! Here’s a sampling: MAGIC KINGDOM TRON LIGHTCYCLE / RUN – Based on the movie franchise, the coaster-style attraction takes guests on a race through the Grid on their own lightcycle. EPCOT WORLD SHOWCASE - The United Kingdom

Summer 2020 will also see the debut of a new restaurant in the France pavilion, LA CRÊPERIE DE PARIS, offering both table- and quick-service options featuring a menu from celebrity chef Jérôme Bocuse. tar Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is the largest and most technologically advanced singlethemed land expansion ever in a Disney park. The 14-acre land transports guests to the remote planet of Batuu, full of unique sights, sounds, smells and tastes. Guests become part of their own Star Wars stories as they experience galactic food and beverages, such as iconic Blue Milk and Green Milk. They can craft their own lightsabers or build their own droids in immersive, interactive retail experiences. They can explore an intriguing collection of merchant shops and may even come across iconic Star Wars characters. In one of the land’s signature attractions, Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, guests take the controls of the most famous ship in the galaxy as pilots, gunners or flight engineers in an exhilarating experience that responds in real time to the actions they take. Are Players Falling In Love With This Machine, Or Is This Just A Passing Attraction?

Dear Mark: I have a comment on the recent column where the questioner asked, Is there any chance that the slot machine senses a new player has not been at a particular machine for a specific period, and then pays off initially, then stops paying? Is this guy serious? A slot machine that can sense? Does he live on planet earth? Sorry, but I HAD to give you my 2 cents worth. Jerry P. Hey now, Jerry, let s be polite. First, he was a she (Joy); and there could be some merit in her thinking that a machine that can sense an incoming player. There are such machines, sort of, or at least many players believe so.

The machines I am speaking of, Jerry, are manufactured by SHFL entertainment, Inc. (previously named Shuffle Master) and are called Table Master. These slots use a video representation of a life-sized cybernetic dealer, such as an attractive, young lady, placed at the center of a fully automated table game. When these cyber dealers are on a dead game, they are in tracking mode and can appear to be looking around for some player to park their rear in one of the five player stations. If you walk by and verbalize what every dealer that ever pitched a card hears daily, Are you hot or cold, it can t hear you, nor can this virtual dealer respond to any of your physical or verbal commands, YET! However, once you are playing at the table, they do verbally prompt you to bet or fold, take insurance, or, depending on the game, any other command needing a decision on your part. I have spent hours observing players on these games communicating verbally with the dealer. It gets quite hysterical. Some players actually respond to the looks and personalities of these virtual dealers. It is one thing to have an affection for a machine that offers a decent return, another when players develop a love interest in an avatar. There’s into you, and then there is head-over-heels gaga. over that edge. As for playing blackjack on a Table Master machine, straight up, I like, not love them. With favorable rules like surrender, doubling and split variations that favor the player, your percentage return with smart play can be the same as that of a fair live table game. To boot, I have seen this game offered for as little as a buck a hand. For pleasurable play, that is a sizable gap versus a $25 minimum live table game on a Saturday night. There is a downside, though. On a Table Master game, expect double the number of hands dealt per hour. Involving what’s called “incremental game speed,” the more often you are exposed to the built-in house advantage on a Table Master blackjack game (i.e. the more hands you play per hour), the faster the machine eats up your bankroll. What the future holds for interactive slots for players willing to give up their hard-earned money is anybody’s guess. But, Joy’s belief that a machine can sense that a player has just climbed aboard is considerably closer to reality than you might think. Ever been in a bathroom with faucets that turn on when you put your hands in the sink, towel dispensers that spit out towel when you wave a hand in front of them, lights that turn on with motion and off when there is none, or toilets that flush when you stand up? 101

Antique Gifts for Valentine’s Day

alentine’s day honors the Christian martyr, St. Valentine as well as the Roman goddess of marriage, Juno. Together these two famous love figures have shown us mere mortals all about the ways of love. St. Valentine’s feast day, February 14, is highlighted with the gifting of flowers, sharing symbols of love, and sending romantic cards to loved ones. While St. Valentine presented the flowers from his garden to young lovers in an effort to promote the Catholic sacrament of matrimony, his February holiday has sparked the gifts old and new. Here are some antique gifts that will warm up your Valentine’s day. VALENTINE CARDS. These small tokens are exchanged between childhood friends and starcrossed lovers alike. Examples from the early 1900s come in the form of post cards and are worth $5-$10. Vintage examples from the World War II era range in value from $10-$20 depending on condition, market, artist, and sentimental message. LOVE SEATS AND SETTEES. While the Victorians introduced us to the rules and regulations of courting one’s lover, they also made seating furniture very cozy. The widespread use of love seats for two and settees was a Victorian stable in the world of antique furniture. Eastlake furniture named for Charles Eastlake, a British designer, was known for comfortable tufted seats and backs on love seats and intertwined courting seats featuring two chairs fused together with a bar in between the two seated lovers in walnut and upholstery fabric. Courting lamps. The Victorians gave us restrictions on courtship in the form of the courting lamp. The courting lamp had graduated markings on the glass to indicate minutes. The marks showed the amount of time left before the fuel source expired and your lover must be on his way home. Today, these rare Valentine’s keepsakes are worth $50-$150. 106

CANDY. Russell Stover, Godiva, and Whitman candy in their characteristic embossed cardboard or lithographed tin boxes on a living room coffee table spoke volumes about this popular winter holiday. Once these delicious chocolates were devoured, the candy boxes were saved through the years. Today, candy boxes in the shape of hearts command $3 each at antique shops. Candy containers. Glass candy containers from the early 1900s came in all shapes and sizes. They are found in the form of animals, people, toys, and even historic buildings like the Philadelphia City Hall, U. S. Capital Building, and The White House. They are widely collected and range in value from $50 to $250. Chocolate molds. Chocolate molds are very popular, particularly on the day when an abundance of chocolate is consumed. Wooden and cast metal chocolate molds which date back to the late 19th Century are the most sought-after examples for collectors. But, be aware love isn’t cheap and these chocolate molds are expensive with values from $500 and $2000 for the finest examples. If you are going out on the town with your honey, then you’ve got to look good. VINTAGE COUTURE. Winter hats from that bygone night on the town in celebration of Valentine’s Day are all the rage. Look for period hats of faux fur and leather gloves with fanciful detailing at thrift shops. You will have to save your pennies to buy some of these name brand pieces ranging in value from $250 to $400 each. Jewelry. There is nothing quite like getting a piece of fine jewelry featuring gold, silver, or platinum with gemstones from your sweetheart. Costume jewelry is another popular Valentine’s gift by designers Weiss, Trifari, Coro, Monet, Maravella, Renoir, etc. The pieces are well made, low quality yet durable stones, and high-end period designs. Crystal Mill Marble, Colorado

he Crystal Mill was constructed along the Crystal

River in 1893 by George C. Eaton and B.S. Phillips as a power plant for the Sheep Mountain Tunnel and Mining Company. The mill used a water turbine to drive an air compressor which powered other machinery and tools in the nearby silver mines. It ceased operation in 1917 when the Sheep Mountain Mine closed. It is on the National Register of Historic Places, and an iconic image of Colorado.
