Marriage Equality Action by Jennifer Merriman

“My commitment to traditional values, including how marriage is defined and respect for life, holds true in the United States and around the world. After being asked about legislation being considered in the Ugandan parliament, I contacted the U.S. State Department to get information. I did not have any knowledge about the proposal from any source beyond the news reporters who asked about it and the few constituents who contacted me. Based on what I’ve been able to learn about the legislation and from the stand point that I’m a born again Christian, I can tell you that I don’t agree with this un-Christian and unjust proposal, and I hope the Ugandan officials dismiss it.” — Senator Chuck Grassley, December 11, on Ugandan anti-homosexuality legislation linked to the Washington DC fundamentalist group, The Family.

When we look at the future of gay marriage in Iowa, there’s no doubt about it: We need your help. The Iowa Legislature is currently controlled by a fair-minded majority, legislators who went to the mat in the days and weeks after the Varnum v. Brien decision to keep civil marriage equality in Iowa. But recent polls show some troubling numbers. While Iowans are split on support for a constitutional amendment, the majority oppose civil marriage for gay and lesbians couples, according to a recent poll in The Des Moines Register. The opposition’s base is more energized and empowered than our pro-equality supporters, and we need to close that gap. With the 2010 general election looming, we have gubernatorial candidates whose sole platform is reversing the marriage decision. Nineteen of the Democratic seats in the Senate and all 56 of the Democratic seats in the House will be up for re-election. In addition, three Iowa Supreme Court Justices including the Chief Justice will be up for retention as well as a ballot measure to convene a constitutional convention in 2010. Voters are not in open revolt against the Supreme Court, the governor or the legislature, and most think both that this issue will not affect them and there are other more important issues like the economy and jobs. And we know voters who get to hear the best arguments for and against marriage equality usually prefer the pro-equality argument. We need your help making sure they hear our best argument. We have two important events coming up to help energize our supporters and give them the tools they need to effectively agitate for gay marriage.

• Red, Blue and Purple: We will be announcing our coalition of equality partners and unveiling our new video campaign message at this event January 10 at the Des Moines Social Club. • Lobby Day: Make sure to join us February 10. We’ll be going to the capitol to talk to our legislators. Make sure to sign up for our weekly newsletter to find out more as we get closer to the date.

Join us for One Iowa’s 2010 Legislative Reception on Jan. 12, 2010, featuring special guests Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal and Speaker of the House Pat Murphy. The event is hosted by Mike Simonson of Simonson and Associates Architects, and will

be held from 6:30-8:30pm at 1717 Ingersoll Avenue, Suite 117, in Des Moines. Suggested donation for the event is $50; host levels are Co-chair $2500, Champion $1000, Supporter $500 and Host $250. RSVP to Amanda Huppert, amanda@oneiowa.org or 515.288.4019 x214.

In the meantime, whatever your brand of activism, you can help get the word out to friends, neighbors and communities across Iowa. And if you need help, One Iowa staff is available to help you get the most out of your important work. Write a letter to the editor. Your voice for equality is amplified in the local [city] paper. Our online tools make it easy to craft and send a letter. Be a rapid responder. Unfortunately, newspaper and television stories about gay marriage are targets for hateful comments online. We are looking for a couple of people in each community who will track these stories and post educated, civil responses and comments about marriage equality. Share your story. Our website features a second for Iowans who want to tell why they support marriage equality. We use these stories again and again to help spread our message. Meet with your legislators. We would like equality supporters to meet with every legislator in Iowa during this session. [ Editor’s note: Find your Iowa legislators at: www.legis.state.ia.us/FindLeg/ ] Make sure to visit our website at www.oneiowa.org for more opportunities, stories and activist tools.
