How do you like your martinis: Shaken? Stirred? With a twist?

Chances are you have an opinion, even if it’s just what you know James Bond prefers.

Now, come and learn a little bit more about this classy, classic, versatile cocktail — one of the few to have special glassware named after it. We’re running a special pre-holiday course in martini magic at the Inglis Hotel.

Located just 20 minutes from our Russell Training Centre at Major Pratt School, this is the first course we’ve been able to hold in the village of Inglis for several years.

It’s taught by Jenny Perrin, who took over the hotel — and the “Red Rooster” restaurant — in 2008, moving back to Manitoba after 11 years in B.C. “I’d worked for a chain that bought up bars and hotels for the Olympics,” Jenny says, and she was ready to put that experience in buying and running small hotels and restaurants to use in going into business herself.

But she’d also worked for one of B.C.’s top saltwater fishing resorts, where she says she gained a lot of experience in fine dining, including drinks like wine and Scotch.

It’s knowledge that wasn’t immediately useful at the Red Rooster. In fact, she says she doesn’t even offer fancy cocktails on the menu.

“Martini Mixers” takes place on Tuesday evening, Nov. 24, from 7-9 p.m. For just $59, you and your classmates will have the bar at the Inglis Hotel all to yourself, as you learn the history of the martini as well as proper mixology.

You’ll have to be at least 18 to take this course; please ensure you have a safe ride home.

“I don’t, it makes me sad,” she laughs.

“I tried. I live in a rye-and-Coke and Budweiser world, that’s just the way it is.”

This November, however, she’s going to change that world, closing the bar for a couple of hours to host the Martini Mixers course.

“We’re going to put a bit of a holiday spin on it,” Jenny says. “Like a Candy Cane Martini, rimmed with crushed candy canes and using peppermint liqueur.”

Wait, aren’t martinis supposed to be gin or vodka?

“Oh it used to be,” she says. “But the modern martini is whatever you have in the liquor cabinet!”

Although she hasn’t completely finalized the final martini menu, Jenny tells us that students will get to mix up five different martinis, with a variety of holiday rimmers and garnishes.

Martinis are all about garnish and rimming and the technique, she says.

“People are looking for something different, for entertaining.”

Colleen Nernberg, who coordinates classes for ACC Continuing Studies in the Russell area, says many other new courses are coming.

“We’ve reached out to some new instructors,” she says, mentioning yoga, cooking classes, photography workshops and a sustainable living course.

She adds that Jenny has another course planned for over the winter at the Inglis Hotel, this one on wine and appetizers.

“It could include white, red and port tasting, along with finger foods, cheeses and meats,” Colleen says.

MIX THIS TONIGHT Jenny’s favourite martini won’t likely be on her pre-holiday course menu, but it’s perfect for late-summer sipping right now. Here’s a variation:

Melon Martini: • 2 oz vodka • 1 oz Bol’s melon liqueur • ½ oz Triple Sec (to taste) Shake with ice and strain into a martini glass.

Jenny’s tip: Use frozen melon balls in the bottom of your glass to keep your Melon Martini perfectly chilled, without diluting the drink.

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most popular and secure English proficiency test. It assesses all of your English skills - reading, writing, listening and speaking.

ACC is proud to be an official testing centre for IELTS. IELTS is jointly owned by The British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations.

IELTS tests are available on up to 48 dates a year. Tests are normally taken on Saturdays, with some sessions on Thursdays. If you are interested in Thursday testing, please email ielts@assiniboine.net.

The Listening, Reading and Writing tests are all taken on the same day. The Speaking test can take place up to seven days before or after the other papers; this is determined by the Centre.

Improve your score on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Become familiar with the structure of the test, learn test-taking strategies specific to the IELTS and practice with an instructor.

The course will review all four components: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Special emphasis will be given to the grammar structures, vocabulary items and sentence patterns important to the IELTS. Students will also get the opportunity to have an instructor give individualized feedback on student performance for the tested skills.

The following test dates are available at Assiniboine Community College in Brandon or Winnipeg.

To register for an IELTS test, it is preferred that you complete your online application at least 5 weeks before the test date. Refunds and transfers will only be permitted prior to 5 weeks before the test date. Online registration can be completed at http://ielts.britishcouncil.org/assiniboine.

The application deadline with submitted payment and identification is one week prior to the test.

The test centre will confirm your IELTS test date and time. If the speaking test is to be on a different day, the centre will tell you this.

A suite of brand-new computer simulators at Assiniboine Community College is ready to turn out trained heavy equipment operators – people needed for work in the lucrative and growing construction industry.

The mobile lab will teach students the fundamentals of operating heavy equipment like bulldozers and excavators, building the skills that you need to get to work effectively right from the start.

“Simulators allow you to get a realworld feeling for the equipment without causing damage, wear-and-tear or fuel costs to an employer,” says Gerald Cathcart, ACC’s business development coordinator.

The majority of the work in this trade is outdoors. It is important that people entering the trade have strong mechanical aptitude, communication skills, mathematical ability, excellent visual and depth perception and a high degree of hand-foot-eye coordination. The operation of some heavy equipment is physically demanding as is the handling of accessories associated with the worksite operations.

Heavy equipment operators are wellcompensated and in-demand — both in Manitoba and throughout Canada.

You’ll graduate with a Certificate of Achievement from ACC, recognized by employers. Students in many of our programs find continuing work directly from their practicum.

The $140,000 new simulators are loaded on top-of-the-line Alienware laptops, kitted out with huge external monitors and specially designed replica controls that perfectly mimic the machines you’ll train on.

We sat Brandon–Souris MP Larry Maguire down for a hands-on demonstration earlier this year. Not only did he take to it like a natural (must be his farm background), he left impressed.

“This is a real-life simulator,” he said.

“Even when you move the bucket up and down, it bounces off the deck like real life. It’s an excellent simulation!”

Of course, simulation can only get you so far. That’s why our courses also have real-world experience built in, to make sure you’re ready for the demands of industry.

“We’re going to teach you safety, a little bit about surveying and soils, basic maintenance and operations,” Cathcart says. “We’re going to spend a lot of time on the simulator and then we’re also going to put you in the field, in a local gravel pit, with a piece of equipment and an experienced instructor.”

Complete an employer practicum as well, and you could graduate with a Certificate of Achievement from ACC, recognized by employers.

EQUIPMENT We have 20 simulators, four each of excavators, bulldozers, wheeled loaders, heavy trucks and forklifts.

The hardware includes Alienware laptops and large flat-screen monitors, along with custom-built joysticks and foot controls that mimic what is found on an actual piece of heavy equipment.

They’re designed to clamp on to any table, meaning the simulators can be set up just about anywhere.

When it comes to the software, provided by Canadian company Simlog, you’ll train in a fully three-dimensional simulated environment that looks like a worksite. The photos on these pages are actual screengrabs from the program you’ll be using.

Each machine has a number of different levels, and you’ll have to master one technique before tackling the next. Your instructors will be able to track your progress through each level — including the number of times you hit reset — and guide you through the simulation.

That ensures you’re ready and able when it’s time to get behind the wheel of the real thing.

As this course guide went to press, we were preparing to launch our very first training program using the simulators.

But that’s not all.

“One of the really exciting things about these simulators is that they’re designed to travel,” says Cathcart.

“They’re fully mobile – we can pack them up in boxes like a concert roadie – and we can take them anywhere.”

This means that ACC can come to you, and do heavy equipment training in your community.

“There’s a need for heavy equipment operators, there’s a need to upgrade the skills of operators who are already in the industry and there’s a need to take this training to rural and remote communities — and being mobile, we can do that.”

HIGH RISK FEET - CLINICAL

This course will provide an advanced understanding of how this systemic disease affects the entire body. Of all the systemic diseases, diabetes causes more non-traumatic amputations than any other.

Peripheral Vascular Disease, neuropathy, increased risk of infection, ulcers and Charcot Foot can have a devastating effect on the person with diabetes. Although all persons with diabetes are at risk for foot ulcers, this course will take a close look at some key factors that increase the likelihood of diabetic foot ulcers including diabetic foot screening and risk level evaluation.

This course introduces learners to the psychosocial aspects of caring for those living with a life threatening or terminal illness – patient, family and loved ones.

Students learn about psychological, social, spiritual and emotional care, as well as the theoretical constructs which support particular values in hospice palliative care.

This course will examine patients’ needs in pain control and symptom management within the context of a multidisciplinary team. Basic pharmacology and clinical aspects of pain/symptom management will be explored using current research approaches. The phenomena and classification of pain will be investigated and incorporated into history taking and pain assessment frameworks. Holistic and complementary therapies will be examined.

DYING - GRIEF BEREAVEMENT HLTH-0211 Prerequisite: HLTH-0233 Palliative Care Intro

Practical information will be provided on recognizing the signs of approaching death, providing appropriate assistance and support to the dying person and his/her significant others.

Grief and bereavement will be examined from the perspective of the dying person, significant others and the hospice palliative care team.
