Dear Member, This year continues to be one of the busiest and most rewarding periods we have had in our thirteen year history. As 2013 draws to an end we have completed all of our major objectives that were set at the beginning of the year and you’ll be pleased to hear we have managed to add some additional achievements along the way. One of this year’s major successes was the growth of our Accor Hotels Select program, one of the most successful Première Plus benefits we have ever introduced. Members have used their Première Points to book over 11,000 room nights at 22 participating hotels and resorts throughout the year. Accor Vacation Club Cruises has also witnessed a tremendous uptake from its introduction as a personal benefit for our Première Plus Members at the end of last year. This year alone over 500 Member families utilised their Première Points to enjoy savings on incredible cruise experiences across the globe. We continue with the largest refurbishment program in the history of our Club, this year having completed refurbishments at Grand Mercure Busselton, Grand Mercure Puka Park, Grand Mercure The Vintage, and Freshwater Point Resort. Next year we plan to see another six resorts from our portfolio receive that ‘sprinkle of magic’ we have come to expect from our property management team.
4 6
In another exciting development, Accor Vacation Club has commenced the rebranding of our Grand Mercure properties, the first being The Sebel Melbourne Flinders Lane. Over the coming months we will continue to complete this rebranding program across all of the remaining Grand Mercure properties in our portfolio. Another great success this year was our Member Event program which held 35 workshops at 12 locations across Australia and New Zealand attended by over 5000 Members. The feedback I have received again has been fantastic. If you want to get the very best out of your Membership I would strongly recommend, if you haven’t done so already, that you attend one of the many event workshops scheduled for next year. What continues to be popular is the ever growing number of personal Member benefits you can receive by just presenting your Membership card at a number of establishments we have selected to offer great value to you while on holiday or at home. You can find out more in this issue on pages 24 to 29.
24
Early next year you will also see the launch of our newly designed, user friendly Member website. We have made sure that the information contained is easy to access and clearly presented. You can look forward to updates on the properties in the network, your membership and account details, special usage options, member events schedules and other exciting things that we will have happening throughout the year. 2014 Promises to be another great year of progress for the Club. We are looking forward to introducing a number of new and exciting initiatives to further your enjoyment of the Club, including continuing our refurbishment program and most exciting of all, the acquisition of additional Member inventory.
“
The feedback from both Members and guests alike on the quality of the refurbishment is best exemplified by the positive feedback posted on one of the most respected travel websites ‘Trip Advisor’. Congratulations to both Grand Mercure Pinnacle Apartments – Sydney and the Grand Mercure Basildene Manor for achieving the number one position in their respective categories. Recognition should also be given to our wonderful hotel staff who continue to provide you with the best guest experience possible.

Taking the focus of this spectacular location nestled in the rainforest close to the spectacular beach of Pauanui, one of New Zealand’s premier holiday destinations’, a flavor of New Zealand culture has been instilled into the design of the Grand Mercure “Puka Park” accommodation chalets. Puka Park has the foundation to provide a theme that the destination is an adventure in itself… far from the bustling lifestyles that many guests have left behind them (be they psychological or geographical). Tranquillity and romance sprinkled with a touch of nostalgia and cultural reference. A modern twist to the familiar surrounds will have the guests enjoying New Zealand’s semi-remote North Island lifestyle. The “Resort Series” room was designed to take into consideration the

Accor Vacation Club rooms typically run at high occupancies and guest densities with resort destinations also experiencing a longer average length of stay and higher family use. As a result of this the design and products selected needed to be of a higher quality to reflect heavy commercial use while still achieving a modern yet practical design. Environmental initiatives have also been implemented with the replacement of high energy down lights with LED fittings and all bathroom fittings and fixtures have been chosen based on their water saving capacity. The majority of the selected furniture is manufactured in New Zealand and is covered by an 6 year commercial structural warranty and a high percentage of all goods, including paint, tiles, carpet, bathroom chinaware and some FF&E are New Zealand or Australian made.

The bathrooms have been fully redesigned, with feature shower wall and inbuilt vanity shelf, semi frameless shower screens and frameless mirrors have been used to blend with the contemporary nature of the bathroom furniture and fittings.
The kitchens are of a contemporary design with the use of stone bench tops, tiled splash backs and high quality fittings. All appliances are inbuilt and are of a stainless steel finish with all visible GPO points and light switches changed to match. The kitchen floors are all covered with R10 rated tiles with floor heating, which continue through to the bathroom and laundry areas.
The Lounge areas in the 1 bedroom apartments will have the unique element of a Murphy Bed fully enclosed in designer cabinetry and having a luxury queen size mattress, giving the opportunity to split rooms to make two studios.

ccor Vacation Club has announced that their prestigious apartment hotel in Flinders Lane Melbourne is now to be known as The Sebel Melbourne Flinders Lane, part of a group of properties that offer superb facilities and individual service in the most desirable locations. Two years ago the hotel underwent a $4.3 million makeover, of the hotels suites and public areas, to bring the property back to its glamorous glory, so well known by stars of stage and screen over the past two decades. Now, staff trained in discretion and top flight service, and will be dressed in new uniforms designed by David Lawrence, Country Road and Sportscraft will host guests in Sebel style – sophisticated elegance. The all suite apartment hotel is a market leading boutique product, consistently rating highly on Trip Advisor and other forums, popular with Accor Vacation Club Members and the general public due to its central location in the heart of the CBD. The Sebel is a brand that is rich in history, with the flagship property, The Sebel Townhouse opening in Elizabeth Bay on 23rd December 1963. This soon became the place to stay and hosted guests such as Elton John Liza Minelli and Michael Jackson. “Independent, intelligent guests will welcome the freedom, space and functional benefits Sebel offers. The Apelles Apothecary range of organic amenities are top rate, and the welcoming signature lounge area will be a congenial meeting place for those who choose to linger. Personalised service from mine host is to be expected, and will be delivered by teams with a “can do” attitude and who are intuitively empowered to assist the guest in all facets of their stay. “The Sebel Melbourne Flinders Lane was a well known haunt of the stars of music, stage and screen due to its proximity to the Art Centre, concert halls and theatres. Rumors had it that there was
a secret tunnel entrance that could be used by the rich and famous for a quick exit, or private entrance,” he added, “but these have never been truly substantiated.” Suite sizes vary from 46sqm to 64sqm and all are generously appointed, including a designer urban kitchenette, a dining area with stone top dining table, a leather chaise lounge with sofa bed, a work desk with cow hide chair, large screen LCD TVs in both the lounge and bedroom, media hub connectivity, iPod docking station and a luxurious bedroom with oversized fully upholstered bed head. All courtyard view rooms have faux European styled balconies that overlook the Parisian styled, private green oasis. The Signature Suites offer an increased level of luxury. Providing 95sqm of pure opulence, the Signature Suites provide all standard suite features with the addition of a cocktail bar with glass fronted wine fridge, 55” LED TV, separate office area, large bathroom with free standing bath tub and the ability to interconnect to a second bedroom. The Sebel Melbourne Flinders Lane’s location is set perfectly amongst the blocks of department stores, boutiques, outlet shopping and rag-traders, five star restaurants & bars and cafes. The Hotel is ideally located between Elizabeth and Queen Street, in close proximity to all of Melbourne’s shopping, and entertainment district, with the added benefit of being in the heart of Melbourne’s famous laneway culture and the bonus of the iconic Flinders Street Station only one block away. The building, which is located at 321 Flinders Lane, was built in 1921 on the former Dr. Jaeger’s Sanitary Woollen System Co. Ltd site, the company later evolving in to the internationally renowned Jaeger fashion House. The building was first tenanted in 1923 and housed various textile and fashion retailers including Wallace Buck & Goodes Pty Ltd, the founder of Henry Bucks & Co Pty Ltd. edition two 2013 vacations | 8-9

Hot Cruise Tips
! s ’ y e t a M y o Ahooo I
’m delighted to be back behind the Captain’s wheel again this summer sharing with my friends some of my latest cruise news and cruise tips along-the-way! Wow – what an amazing and exciting season ahead in the wonderful world of cruising! There are “cruises-a-plenty” to choose from for you landlubbers out there and you will soon see how easy it is to get your “sea legs!” ... And for me (and all the other wellseasoned, avid cruisers), it’s time to say again: “Why not?” Let’s go! and “Bon Voyage” as there’s some really amazing new ships and itineraries to explore and even better, indulge! Here’s a list of my latest cruise news, ships and tip “favs”:
Calling all first time cruisers:
look out Australia!
The main Cruise Industry Association, CLIA has noted that Australia is one of the fastest growing cruise markets globally! Great news for the first time cruiser as we’re now in our second season of dedicated cruise ships home-ported here in Australia, heading out on itineraries around Oz, throughout the South Pacific and across the ditch to New Zealand. There’s even a fab Captain Cook Murray River cruise itinerary not to be missed! Keep in mind 90% of itineraries depart Sydney but there is an expanding list of Fremantle, Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane departures as well, anywhere from 3 to over 50 days in length! Just let your Accor Vacation Club Cruise Consultant know what month you want to holiday and you’re on your way!
Aloha
TIP A growing popular first time cruise is a 7 day NCL island hopping sojourn around the Hawaiian Islands! Even better combine with 7 days of island “R & R” at a resort stay - relax on the beach, shop or surf – it’s Aloha time!
River cruising continues to thrive... I have found the selection and value of cruises available to Members outstanding – check out the Old World while relaxed and transported in the luxury and style of the new! All the best companies are represented including APT; Viking, Avalon Waterways, Uniworld, Travel Marvel, Evergreen and even Scenic! River cruising is such a cool, intimate way to explore the historic, thriving waterways of Europe, Russia, China and now, even SE Asia and the mighty US Mississippi! Unpack only once and in some itineraries everything is included from all sight seeing excursions to all meals, wine and much, much more...
TIP Bikes are often available and travel with the
TIP Bring a great

pair of walking shoes for Europe as all the old city centres are cobblestone streets!

These cruise articles on pages 12 to 17 have been supplied by Accor Vacation Club Cruises’ third party provider. Accor Vacation Club Cruises is a benefit available to Première Plus Members.
The Latest News! There’s nothing more exciting then to be on one of the maiden voyages or exploring new ship itineraries! Here are just a few of latest... overlooking ocean; 43 foot rock climbing wall; over 100 Vitality Spa treatments available and more. There’s all the other usual amenities as well including comprehensive dining options, Broadway reviews and a whole Voyage of Self Discovery at sea where you can choose to indulge the mind or body - learn to dance the salsa, skate, cook, converse in Italian, scrapbook, wine taste or even make your own beaded jewellery. And then there were three! Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines continues to astound as it prepares the world to be WOWed by its latest new 167,800 tonne megaship the Quantum of the Seas – soon to be one of the larger cruise liners afloat with a capacity of any small city – 4180 guests (that is 4 thousand). You may have heard about RCCL’s first two Oasis class ships the Allure and the Oasis of the Seas (at an even bigger 5400 passenger capacity each), wooing cruisers with all their amenities on their amazing Caribbean itineraries including their one-of-a kind first features like the Central Park areas, Aqua Theatres, Merry-Go-Rounds and entire elevator bars and even a zip line for guests to journey in the air from one end of the ship to the other. Well Quantum’s 18 deck ship highlights are legends and stunners in their own right! On board amenities include: the “North Star” 360 degree viewing platform which raises 300 feet above sea level: first ever sky-diving “Ripcord by iFly” simulator: “Seaplex” complex offering basketball, roller skating and bumper cars at sea; family friendly modular staterooms; 220-foot outdoor, poolside move screen; Adults-only “Solarium” retreat; 10 whirlpools, two cantilevered
TIP Don’t forget to just relax! There are plenty of places to sneak away, soak up the sun, savour the shade (cocktail in hand) or while- the- dayaway pool-side, spa-side or deck-side!
Avalon waterways triple christening in March and June 2014 of its new Poetry II and Avalon Impression European river cruisers. Deborah Hutton was also just announced as the Australian designated godmother of the Avalon Illumination debuting in Vienna June.
Well that’s it for this time around! Hope you have found a few “pearls of wisdom” that you may deem helpful or inspiring! Don’t forget to take advantage of all the information and over 250,000 pages of content available online via the Accor Vacation Club Cruises website. There’s plenty of materials and “gads of information” all available at your fingertips! There’s cruise ship reviews, deck plans, ship facts, cruise itineraries, destination information, cruise ship pictures including cabin pictures and much, much more (an unbelievable 10,000 cruise line itineraries online!!!)
The Luxurious Silversea Cruise lines has set sail with its 100-guest, newly refurbished ultra-luxury expedition vessel the Silver Galapagos. Now’s a great time to join other like-minded guests from around the globe and experience South America’s island archipelago jewel – the Galapagos! Blue-Footed Boobies, Giant Tortoises and Marine Iguanas – oh my! I must say this is the way to indulge – a week or more of unforgettable adventure with Mother Nature at her finest! All cabins are ocean-view suites, most with private balconies and butler service! Enjoy the country-club feel, complimentary drinks and elegant sophistication. The wildlife is spectacular and Silverseas’ exclusive partnership with the Royal Geographical Society ensures that it will be breathtaking.
TIP Now that you have found yourself a world-a-way why not combine your Galapagos cruise with some further explorations of the South American Continent! Why not add a cruise from Valparaiso in Chile around the Cape to Buenos Aires and on to Rio!
Bon Voyage! See you on the Seas!

Ship The Arctic
MS Expedition - G Adventures
Your heart beats faster and icy sea spray stings your cheeks as you slice through the chilly waters in pursuit of a pod of narwhal. This is the Arctic. This is adventure! Follow the ice’s edge on a G Adventures Arctic adventure from Spitsbergen to Greenland… and make sure you keep your eyes (and cameras) glued to the horizon for wildlife. Exploring remote landscapes onboard a small expeditionary ship, you will search out an Inuit village, visit the Land of Fire and Ice - volcanic Iceland, view unique wildlife and more, via Zodiac on daily excursions ashore. Imagine breathtaking fjords with beautiful mountain scenery and glaciers flowing into the sea around us, actually walking on the ice and tundra in search of the elusive polar bears, seals, a myriad of birds or a unique subspecies of reindeer… Orca, Humpback, and Minke whales, as well as White-Beaked dolphins and more!
Our expedition team are professionals and highly skilled historians, marine biologists, and naturalists who offer a keen insight and unique personal perspectives on each and every adventure. With one expert for every 10 guests there is always someone on hand to answer your questions and provide a greater insight and appreciation of the Arctic world. MS Expedition is fully equipped to meet the demands of cruising in polar regions, and has large communal areas and observation decks providing 360° sweeping panoramas, providing a great vantage point from which to spot the unique wildlife. Passengers can relax in the warmth and comfort of the dining room or lounge and still view this remarkable environment. And remember, all meals are included while aboard as well as waterproof boots and an expedition parka (just to keep you all snug and cosy). Join the adventure today with G Adventures!
and others as you sail south from the Argentine’s Ushuaia, past Tierra del Fuego, the ‘Land at the End of the World’. Discover the remarkable beauty of the Falkland Islands, part nature reserve and part remote community, followed by South Georgia an island of towering snow-covered mountains, mighty glaciers, and low-lying grasslands that attract an astounding concentration of wildlife. Southern fur seals, southern elephant seals and a variety of albatross species including black-browed, light-mantled sooty, greyheaded and the spectacular wandering albatross - largest birds in the world, plus thousands upon thousands of king and macaroni penguins – all can be seen from onboard the Silver Explorer or on Zodiac excursion. Elephant Island and
the South Shetlands are next before we move closer to Antarctica’s vast white wilderness. Get up close and personal with the wonders of the surreal Antarctic landscape, marveling at calving glaciers and animal encounters found nowhere else on earth - seals sunbathing on slow-moving ice floes, the cries of thousands of penguins and the awe and magnificence of a whale surfacing from beneath frigid Antarctic waters. This is your final frontier, a land isolated and remote, yet so full of life and inspiration. Join SIlversea as she sails south to explore the Antarctic – call now to live in the moment!

Member Workshops
What a huge success our Member Workshops have been throughout 2013!
I
t’s been a delight to meet our Members and we are amazed at the distance many have travelled to attend. The positive feedback has been fantastic, with many enjoying chats with fellow Members and picking up tips on where to travel and places to visit. Why not come along to hear the latest Club news and take a glimpse of the latest Club Properties to have recently been refurbished? These events are ideal for Members who feel unsure about how to use the Club and for our more experienced Members too, who simply want to keep up to date. Our presenter, Steve, does a tremendous job breaking down the Membership in simple terms. He explains how and when you receive your allocation of Première Points, what to do when you find that your Première Points will be expiring soon, and offers advice on how to make a reservation and navigate your way
around the Member Website. He also provides excellent information on Personal Benefits, Accor Hotels Select, Flight Centre, Interval International and Getaways. Plus much more... At the end of each session, coffee, tea and snacks are available. Perhaps you’ll chat with one of our experienced Cruise Consultants, who can offer suggestions on the best places to visit on your next adventure. Quite a number of our Members book a cruise after attending these workshops. These Members had not considered taking a cruise prior to the workshop. Our Cruise Team have a broad selection of brochures available for you to take home and peruse at your leisure. We can also arrange for our Cruise Consultants to call you at a time convenient to your busy schedule. Come along to a session near you! Because next year we will be travelling far and wide.
See you soon! We learned some handy tips about making more and at times better use out of our membership. It was lovely the children were included in the prize draw, and amusing when young Charlotte, (our 3 year old daughter) drew out our name. We are looking forward to taking a well deserved break! Thank you to you all.

We joined Accor Vacation Club in March this year, and hadn’t used our Membership because we were very unsure initially as to how to book. After the member’s workshop held at Twin Waters, the booking process is now very clear. The workshop was very helpful in clarifying how to use our Membership to our full advantage. This is essential to us as we frequently travel internationally and domestically. We are now really looking forward to making our first booking and using the fabulous holiday we won to stay somewhere we haven’t been before.

The conference was invaluable and thanks to Steve we now understand how to use the club correctly and to its FULL advantage. We have also upgraded our Membership and had the personal touch we had been promised but not yet experienced. Thanks for making it much clearer and bringing back the positive that we were promised. Recommend the seminars to new, old and disgruntled.

My husband & I felt we got a lot out of the workshop. Being new to the Club, it is something you need to refresh the process, as the initial day you sign up there is so much to take in, we were so excited & really didn’t remember the main details. It was good to have such clear instructions for the Website & see what exciting things there are to do & explore. Great presentation from Steve, made it very enjoyable. Looking forward to many happy holidays ahead with Accor Vacation Club.
Like some of your Members with young families, I rarely get to use the benefits of the club and went to the workshop to understand how I could better use my Membership. The information was very clear and my knowledge certainly increased. As a result, I hope that in the future you will be seeing more of my family and I around the Club properties.

Member Testimonials Skiing Wanaka
M
y husband and I stayed at Oakridge Resort in Wanaka New Zealand in August. We skied hard most days and then relaxed in the beautiful hot tubs at the resort afterwards, enjoying the occasional massage, happy hour drinks and the wonderful range of food and good service in the restaurant café. The friendliness of the staff and the happy atmosphere in the resort added to the excitement of skiing, heli-skiing and mountain bike riding. We had an awesome holiday. T
his year we combined two years worth of points and booked two weeks in Orlando, Florida USA through Interval International, and not at a castle in Europe like the photo might suggest.
This the castle from Universal’s ‘The Wizarding World of Harry Potter’ which is a kind of theme park in a theme park, and the castle, which is massive, has to be seen to be believed.
We stayed a week at the Sheraton Vistana Resort and another at Marriott’s Grande Vista resort, both in huge two bedroom apartments. Our tips would be: •
Check the hotel / resort for theme park deals. We saved a ton of money compared to gate prices.
•
Universal has a public restaurant precinct connecting both parks. Check out the world’s largest Hard Rock Cafe, ask to be seated in the ‘Origins of Rock’.
•
Downtown Disney Marketplace. Try ‘Splitsville’ for a restaurant where your own private lane is next to your table, Circ De Sole,
the House of Blues for the ribs, or watch the giant flaming volcano erupt on top of the Rainforest Cafe. •
A visit to NASA out on the coast is a must. Tour the launch pad that sent people to the moon, plus the new Space Shuttle Atlantis exhibit.
•
If you wanted to extend your trip, you could go North to Daytona Beach for Daytona NASCAR, or South to Miami, or even pick up a cruise to The Bahamas.
•
Shopping! There are several factory outlet centres in Orlando. We stuck to the Premium Outlets chain of centres. We seemed to spend a lot of time in Nike, Levi, Timberland, Calvin Klein, Forever 21, North Face and Victoria’s Secret outlets and stores are open till 11pm most nights.
•
We rented a car because it was relatively cheap and saved us transfer costs to and from the airport. ren From Dallas & Ka !! ge Bon Voya

W
e joined the Accor Vacation Club in 2009 and soon discovered it was a great way to holiday in luxury accommodation at exciting destinations in the Pacific region. Then if we desired to cross more places off our bucket list and venture further afield, we found our Interval membership a great option to travel the world. Our first holiday was to the Gold Coast in February 2010 where we attended a “Summer Party” for Accor members at the Sofitel Hotel, Broadbeach. During the evening we were pleasantly surprised to be presented with a trip to Fiji by CEO Craig Wood for winning the early bird competition. So after 40 years of marriage we took this opportunity to celebrate our ruby anniversary at the Sofitel Resort & Spa, Fiji located on beautiful Denarau Island. Here we discovered a private beach, huge swimming pool, three restaurants, four bars, international health spa, wedding chapel and large ballroom within the resort. Everywhere in the resort we
were greeted by a very warm welcoming ‘Bula’ from smiling, generous & relaxed Fijians. We enjoyed a range of culture experiences everyday at the resort such as wood carving, sarong tying, palm weaving, learning to speak the Fijian language, singing Fijian songs and joining in traditional Fijian dances including a Kava brewing & tasting session. Each night we watched the famous torch lighting ceremony as the local warriors ran around the resort lighting up all the torches to the beat of the Lali drum. Renowned for its warm hospitality, this Fiji beach resort certainly made our stay unlike anything we had ever experienced and is highly recommended to all Accor Vacation Club Members. Our next overseas adventure was a trip to Bali when we stayed at Novotel Nusa Dua, Accor Vacation Club Apartments. We found Stacy Loxton from the Club’s Flight Centre very helpful in booking all our flights and organizing orderly connections.
The Uluwatu Monkey Temple, a spectacular set of Balinese monasteries perched along the rugged coastline/west face of the south peninsula, where the temple was inhabited by large number of cute, but cheeky monkeys, who were very adept at snatching visitors’ belongings including bags, cameras, hats, eye glasses, watches & jewellery.
The resort provided a similar range of leisure, recreational and cultural facilities we had experienced in Fiji and being Advantage Plus members, again there was no reason to leave the resort for meals, as delicious Indonesian & international cuisine was served in “The Square” open-air restaurant. Then there was another exclusive restaurant at the private Beach Club where candlelight dining on the beach surrounded by torches was so serene with the waves gently breaking in the background. We didn’t want to leave the resort but felt compelled to venture into Kuta, the favorite holiday destination renowned for party animals drawn to the beach culture and 100’s of bars & nightclubs on offer. Initially we were a little apprehensive about holidaying here and probably wouldn’t have come if we weren’t Club members. Rhonda & Bob Bathurst NSW edition two 2013 vacations | 21
Member Testimonial Fire and Ice
L
ouise and I had been toying with the idea of cruising for some time after hearing about the “Fire and Ice” cruise at a Members information session. I was deployed with my work and was looking into a trip when I got home. An internet search for “Fire and Ice cruises” showed one that departed Hawaii in the first week of May - three days before I was due home - several comments were made - mostly not suitable for publication.
“Game of Thrones” cruise - referring to George R. R. Martin’s novel “A Song of Ice and Fire” where we cruised the Inside Passage to the Hubbard Glacier and then down to Hawaii to see the volcanoes. I did not need too much arm twisting; however I did my homework first; looking at comparable trips booked by ourselves. The package offered by Accor Vacation Club Cruises represented excellent value for money and we were in!
About three weeks after I got home Accor Vacation Club Cruises contacted Louise offering a package that included a week in the Rocky Mountains (with two days on the Rocky Mountaineer) and then what I referred to as our
Personal highlights - For me, it was witnessing an iceberg calve off the Hubbard Glacier. The site and sound was awe inspiring. For Louise it was the summer dog sled camp - where participants of events like the Iditarod
rest and train their huskies over the summer months. We sat in the back of a wheeled cart and were hauled by a team of 12 working dogs for about 2 kilometres. They also let us pet some of the dogs, including the new pups! Members thinking about cruising should contact their Accor Vacation Club Cruises services representative and discuss options. There are plenty available - for first time cruisers to salty sea dogs! Have fun - I know we did and we will again. Hawaiian Luau on the last night of the trip. Great fun and great memories.
