Seasonal Calendar

Dear Member, I hope the first half of 2013 has been as busy and rewarding for you as the one we have had at Accor Vacation Club. We continue on with the most extensive resort refurbishment programs in the history of the Club. To date we have completed seven resorts to what I believe sets new standards in the vacation ownership business in the Pacific region. I would like to thank all of you who have provided me with the wonderful feedback that has been most encouraging. One of the most positive feedback highlights of the first half of this year was Grand Mercure Pinnacle Apartments-Sydney who post refurbishment lived up to its name ‘Pinnacle’ by achieving number one position from 124 properties in its category on Tripadvisor, one of the hotel industry’s most respected travel websites. During the rest of the year we will commence and complete full refurbishments of two of our largest resorts in our Club portfolio, Grand Mercure Busselton and Grand Mercure Puka Park Lodge. The design and quality of both projects are to the highest standards and you will receive a full update as and when the projects are complete. Due to the high quality level of our refurbishment program we will be embarking on rebranding most of our properties by year end, including a number of our Grand Mercure resorts which will soon be rebranded ‘The Sebel’. It’s an exciting time for the Club being associated with such an iconic brand. The Sebel brand has recently been acquired by Accor but was created in 1963 with the opening of a hotel you may be very familiar with, the Sebel Townhouse in Sydney. In its heyday it was without question the ‘place to be’ hosting guests such as Michael Jackson and Elton John to name but a few.

6 22

Further news on rebranding and in celebration of their uniqueness, both Grand Mercure Basildene Manor and Grand Mercure Puka Park Lodge will join shortly the ‘MGallery’ collection of unique hotels of remarkable character. It would be remiss of me not to recognize the hard work and dedication of our resort and refurbishment teams whose tireless effort in improving the quality of resort and guest experience have resulted in these exciting events. On the topic of hard work and exciting events, there continues to be a lot going on in your Member Service Department. One of the major highlights to report on this year is the incredible response and attendance at our Member workshops. In the past 6 months the travelling road-show has visited Cairns, Gold Coast, Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Adelaide with over 3000 Members attending these fun-filled, informative events. Watch out for announcements for an event coming near you soon. Accor Hotels Select continues to introduce new properties to the program with a total of 16 hotels currently available for Première Plus Members to choose from. Our first Asia property the Pullman Phuket Arcadia in Thailand has recently been added with the initial feedback on the resort being exceptional.

26

Accor Vacation Club Cruises continues to keep your Member Service Team very busy with the last few months recording record bookings. Our fortnightly cruise specials have proven to be very successful due to the wide selection and great prices on offer. From mystery local cruises to luxury trips aboard the QE2 it is easy to see why this Première Plus Member program has been so well received. What has also become very popular is the ever growing number of personal Member benefits you can receive by just presenting your Membership card at a number of establishments we have selected to offer great value to you while on holiday or at home. You can find out more in this issue on pages 18 to 21. Our latest Member benefit with Air Asia offering some great discounts has already in its first month been widely enjoyed by Première Plus Members and their families. Bookings can be made using an exclusive link via our Member website. I hope you enjoy reading in this edition about your Club and the many new ways you can enjoy using your Membership. We are already working on other fabulous new benefits which I look forward to updating you on in the next addition of your Vacations magazine.

It is the original foundations of this establishment that have paved the way for a new era of the Sebel, which combines the innovative concept of serviced apartments with the traditional values that earned the hotel the respected reputation that it still holds today. The Sebel became a brand known for unrivalled quality, infallible service and staff who were like old friends! We at Accor Vacation Club are obviously overjoyed to be associated with a brand that I have no doubt will be positioned as the Premiere apartment accommodation provider within our region.

In the meantime, wishing you and your family, happy holidays.

Cruise the Americas

Cruise the Am Ship Ahoy!! I’m back again to share some of my favourite cruise voyages that set sail on the much-loved itineraries around the Americas. I’m what they call a multi-cruiser, one who takes at least one cruise a year – I feel so fortunate, having cruised over 20 years now! But remember, everyone including me was a first-time cruiser at some point, and let me tell you (if you don’t already know), take just one cruise and you’ll be hooked!!! As I showcase some of my favourite Americas itineraries I’ll be throwing in some of my “fav” not-to-be-missed, sight-seeing/sight-tasting tips along the way! Are you ready to set sail on my voyage around the Americas?! Then let’s go – “Bon Voyage!” Wow the Americas! It’s a huge swath of territory (about 1/3 of the planet!) and reaches out from the top of North America and Alaska all the way down through Canada, the United States, Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, the entire South American continent including the Galapagos Islands, to the tip of Cape Horn and the Tierra del Fuego archipelago off Southern Chile - jumping off point for Antarctica! There’s some wonderful cruising, flora and fauna throughout the Americas and I’m always asked about my favourite cruising journeys! So my hope is to inspire you to explore a bit and use your cruise ship as your home away from home, where you can explore by day, whether on land as the Conquistadors did or viewing it all by sea, from the amazing vantage point of your pool-side lounge chair on the cruise ship’s Lido deck! Some of my best sightseeing was looking out from this deck, with a martini in one hand and my favourite nibble in the other!

TIP 1. I suggest one-way

cruise North, ending in Alaska. Spend 4-5 days on a post cruise tour to Denali Nat’l Park, Highlight: world-famous wildlife tour in the Nat’l Park – be startled by Moose, Wolves, Grizzlies all against backdrop of North America’s highest mountain peak, Mt McKinley (6194 metres). Return by air.

TIP 2. Add Rocky Mountaineer

Rail Adventure. Include this once-in-a –lifetime journey by 5 star domed rail through the fabulous Canadian Rockies. Can be done pre/post cruise from Seattle or Vancouver. Suggest adding in Banff and Jasper for total of 7 days. Travel in Gold Leaf Class if you can.

Alaska & Western Canada

captivating wilderness cruises

T

he only way to truly experience this amazing American ‘Last Frontier” is by cruise ship! Astounding scenery, massive fjords & glaciers, glorious untouched coastlines, quaint fishing towns, magnificent wildlife – including yes, Sea Lions, Bears and Whales – oh my! (And the Grizzly bears are huge!). All the leading cruise lines depart from the Pacific Northwest from either Vancouver in Canada or Seattle in the USA, both ports are the main gateways to Alaska and the not-to-be-missed Inside Passage cruise that travels up along the Pacific Coast, north to Alaska, roundtrip or one-way.

6 | vacations edition one 2013

TIP 3. Read my recent Vacations Magazine article entitled: My Alaska Cruise (in depth Article on Inside passage Cruise full of tips)– Island Princess Aug/Sep Itinerary: Vancouver – Inside PassageKetchikan, Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay, College Fjord to Alaska.

These cruise articles on pages 6 to 11 have been supplied by Accor Vacation Club Cruises’ third party provider. Accor Vacation Club Cruises is a benefit available to Premiere Plus Members.

mericas Hawaiian Islands Cruising

A

loha! Who doesn’t dream of a cruise around the Hawaiian Islands! And yes, I’m stretching a bit when I include Hawaii as part of North America! But it is in spirit and because it is the USA’s 50th state (and it’s one of my favourite cruising archipelagos in the world) –it make’s my list!!!. Either cruise to Hawaii from the US Pacific coast or fly-in from Australia and jump onboard NCL’s Pride of America on their famous 7 Full day cruise around this really cool volcanic island chain! Cruise in style between four islands: Oahu (Honolulu/Waikiki), Maui, Kauai (the Garden isle) and the Big Island of Hawaii (my favourite). Enjoy local Hawaiian delicacies on your cruise with full buffets, a wide assortment of cabin choices from the recommended balcony cabins to even some really serious suites, entertainment all included and at last, you can even learn how to really Hula dance from a authentic Hula dancer!!!! And don’t worry there’s over 100 hours in port on every cruise so you will get to feel the “Aloha Spirit” by land and by sea!

Galapagos Islands

B

lue-Footed Boobies, Marine Iguana’s and Giant tortoises - Oh My! And if Blue isn’t your favourite colour there are Red-footed boobies too!!!! Sorry a bit cheeky, but this is the kind of wondrous place that you can see Mother Nature’s cheeky side! A definite ‘bucket” list sailing adventure and cruising experience not to be rivalled. Cruise through this amazing archipelago straddling either side of the equator about 900 km’s from the Ecuador coast! See Santa Cruz, Isabela and San Cristobal islands and the iconic Galapagos National park made famous by Charles Darwin for its evolutionary significance. Silversea, G-Adventures and Celebrity are some of the cruise lines that visit regularly! I had an amazing 10 night luxury expedition cruise aboard the 98 passenger Celebrity Xpedition where their motto was “ the Galapagos may be primitive, but your holiday doesn’t have to be”! My kind of cruise vacation! Everything was included; the cruise, outside stateroom cabin, transfers, all gratuities, open bar, all meals and even snorkelling gear, wetsuits, and binoculars! The on board certified Galapagos National Park naturalists were outstanding!

TI P 1.

Galapagos Cru ise work really wel l in combinatio n with a land stay or tour! I suggest the C uzco plus Orie nt Express Hiram Bingham train to Machu Picch u - 5 Day Peru extension. Or explore farther afield and perh aps indulge on an Amazon cr uise from the Peruvian side of the border! Ask your Accor Vacation Club Cruise consul tant!!!

TIP 1. Kona Coffee (from the Big Island)– make sure you grab your favourite brew and bring some back for your friends, neighbours too or just like me, just for you!

TI P 2.

Why not break up your trip from Australia to the USA with a stopover in Hawaii for a week or two (either coming or going) ! A great way to break-up the journey and spend some “me” and “us” tim e!

South America

Southern South America with RIO!

S

outh America – ‘Round the Cape Horn to Rio Route!” – The Other Down Under! I highly suggest an itinerary that takes in the Southern countries of South America, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil! Holland America Line (HAL), Princess, Celebrity and Cunard have some fabulous itineraries that guide you through the cultural mysteries, magical scenery and exotic wildlife of this amazing region – a moving feast for the senses! There are penguins, Chilean Fjords, Patagonia and Tango to be discovered! Nothing beats a cruise with an arrival into Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. There you will be greeted by the famous Sugarloaf Mountain and the iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer perched atop Corcovado Mountain, his arms wide open, welcoming you to this vibrant city. Rio is home to the upcoming World Cup and the 2016 Olympics! Stroll world famous Copacabana beach and Ipanema beach! Yes that’s where the Ipanema Girl “was walking” and home of Carmine Miranda world famous Hollywood starlet who wore the infamous fruit-bowl headpiece!

Première Points are now deducted at time of booking! Ideal if your Première Points are expiring!

TIP 1. If you can, try and

coordinate and combine your cruise arrival or departure to coincide with Brazil’s most famous holiday – Carnival! (just before Lent!). It is a bit of a frenzy but it’s a frenzy undulating to the Samba – what could be more divine! And if you’re going to Samba, Rio is where you should “hip into it”!

What’s on your Bucket List?

These cruises and tours are sure to tick some destinations off your bucket list. Below are just a few offers we’ve sent to members during 2013. Keep a look out for our cruise offer emails sent out every fortnight!

Amazon River Adventure

Grand Voyage

I

ndeed, the mere mention of Amazon should conjure up images of steamy rainforest, anacondas, jaguars, indians and shimmering estuaries filled with piranhas and a rainbow of all imaginable bird life!! But there is something even more magical here, an untapped energy that is undeniably the river itself – the Amazon! Capture its wild spirit and venture into the Brazilian interior in-style, aboard the comfort of your cruise ship – a sanctuary from the miles of jungle just ashore! Yes, cruise up the river a thousand kilometres and more inland from the Atlantic Ocean through to the ports of Santarem, Boca da Valeria towards famous Manaus. Here is one of the biggest surprises of all - in the middle of the jungle and odd but beautiful landmark of the rubber boom-times past , the fabulous Teatro Amazonas! A real, still-in-use Opera house (a working replica of the Grand Opera de Paris). The auditorium dazzles with near-perfect acoustics and hosts performances and concerts to this day, from ballet to full philharmonic orchestras!

And there’s plenty more to contemplate including itineraries through the fascinating Panama Canal Zone (with stops in Cost Rica and Honduras), Antarctica or one of the myriad of itineraries throughout the Caribbean, Bermuda and Bahamas. There’s also New England in the United States and the popular and fascinating Canadian Maritime region all accessible by cruise! What is really truly great about a cruise holiday other than all the fascinating itineraries to discover around the world is no matter the destination every thing is included in my cruise holiday... All your major meals, entertainment, fabulous stateroom accommodations, entertainment and luxurious transport are included !!! It’s the beauty of cruising! (Snapshots of each provided below) Discover your world today on board a river cruise where each vessel offers the discreet luxury of a small floating hotel, with fabulous inclusions: comfortable cabins, all on board meals, refined entertainment, panoramic picture windows, included excursions, magnificent sights and destinations, PLUS – you only have to unpack ONCE! Amsterdam to Budapest Scenic Cruises

Amsterdam to Budapest is the ultimate in river cruising experiences. It equates to the “Grand Tour” of Europe, touching at ports throughout the Rhine – Main – Danube river system. Beginning in Amsterdam you have the opportunity to view the beautiful canals of this lovely city, and the worldfamous windmills and dykes. Historic Cologne and Dusseldorf are next, with a walking tour to discover the town and Botanical Gardens, magnificent during April to October, followed by a true Medieval banquet in the well preserved 12th century Marksburg Castle. First explore the castle 10 | vacations edition one 2013

and reminisce olden days before you’re banquet is served in true medieval fashion – with roasted pork, honey mead, jugglers, jesters and more! Your rivership glides through the Rhine gorge – a World-Heritage listed area scattered with castles perched high on vine clad slopes and pretty charming villages, simply perfect for photos. Arriving in quaint Rudesheim this is your chance to meander through cobblestoned streets, perhaps stop in at the many cafes, bier gartens or Christmas inspired shops for a souvenir or two. Cruising into the stunning Wurzburg is like stepping back in time to the 10th century of prince-bishops and true Bavarian culture. This pretty Baroque town, also on the UNESCO World Heritage List, holds one of the finest examples of Baroque art and architecture, as well as one of the oldest churches in Germany. Sail on to Bamburg and Nuremburg with their bratwurst, smoked beer and gingerbread, and explore the drama of WWII history firsthand! Another UNESCO World Heritage Listed city in Regensburg, founded by the Romans in 179AD, this town sports age old, well preserved elements from Neolithic, Roman, Italian-style Medieval, Napoleonic times and more.

Passau is next on your journey, another charming town to see. This is your jumping off point for Saltzburg, setting for the “Sound of Music” or the imposing Cesky Krumlov, a medieval Czech town. Discover the gorgeous town of Melk with its impressive Benedictine Abbey, of Durnstein, set in the heart of the beautiful Wachau Valley and then on to Vienna. Explore Austria’s magnificent capital, birthplace of Marie Antoinette, Sigmund Freud, Franz Schubert and Johann Strauss. Enjoy a private Viennese concert of music at the majestic Palais Liechtenstein. Then finally sail to imperial Budapest, also listed as UNESCO World Heritage. The Hungarian cosmopolitan capital boasts a mix of Viennese and Parisian influences in its delicate architecture, rich cultural heritage and vibrant, heady lifestyle. Sandy your Cruise Consultant

Mekong River Cruise APT Vietnam & Cambodia

Egypt

Nile River– Avalon Waterways Cruise the magnificent Mekong River and discover the lively cities of Vietnam contrasted with the serene tranquillity of Cambodia. The must sees on any trip to this region of the world are Siem Reap (temple complex of Angkor Wat), Royal Palace of Phnom Penh, Hanoi, Da Nang, Hoi An, Halong Bay and the Mekong Delta – all covered in relative luxury via a river cruise. Whether it’s the history, cultural diversity, interesting and exotic food, stunning scenery and incredible temples – it’s all there. Hanoi is one of the most beautiful colonial cities, bustling with activity, warm friendly people and a truly inspired French-Viet culinary tradition. From here to Ha Long Bay, “Bay of Descending Dragons”, is a UNESCO World Heritage site of outstanding natural beauty and wonderment. A spectacular seascape of over 1950 towering, forested limestone pillars await your discovery. Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) lies on the Mekong Delta, a maze of canals and rivers punctuated with small traditional villages and floating markets. As a centre for Vietnamese culture this area thrives on tourism, sporting museums rich in Vietnamese history and steeped in a rich, diverse culture, ancient Pagodas, markets and delicious, delicate Frenchinspired delectable delights – Yum! Crossing the border the landscapes seem little changed, however you are now in Cambodia! It’s capital Phnom Penh still has its narrow lanes, markets, traditional food stalls and shops as well as reflecting the charm and character of old French colonial days. A must see on your journey is the Royal Palace, a confection of silver and gold in the traditional Cambodian architecture. Cruise through to Siem Reap, to the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Angkor complex of palaces, and surrounding jungle. The enormous temple monuments etched with elaborate decoration were built in the 12th century and are a testament to Cambodian ingenuity and religious dedication. Michael your Cruise Consultant

Imagine stepping into a world of souks and bazaars with exotic spices flavouring the air and the sounds of a vibrant city ringing in your ears – you are in Egypt and about to set off on an adventure along the Nile and immerse yourself in the history of this great land! The Nile River, life-blood of Egypt has been a source of prosperity and plenty since ancient times, it is along its banks that you will discover over 5000 years of history and be in awe at the marvels that await. One of the seven wonders of the world – the Pyramid of Giza lies on a sandy plateau outside of Cairo. Sitting beside in all its glory is the mysterious Sphinx, standing guard. Journey south to Luxor and the Temple of Karnak, dedicated to the god Amun-Ra, walk among the pillars, once brightly coloured, the avenue of sphinxes of this UNESCO World Heritage Listed site. The great stone temple of Queen Hatshepsut’s Deir El-Bahari, carved into an open cliff face and the singing Colossi of Memnon are nearby. Here too are the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens, sites where Pharoahs and their queens have been buried in all their splendour –the golden tomb of Tutankamum is but one example. Edfu, home to the Temple of Horus, built in the time of Cleaopatra, visit Dendera’s Temple of Hathor, picturing Cleopatra and the son she bore Julius Caesar, Caesarian, and the Temple dedicated to Sobek, a crocodile god in Kom Ombo where mummified crocodiles were found. Arrive in Aswan and board a felucca, a traditional fishing boat, bound for the island of Agilika. In 1970 the Aswan Dam raised the level of the Nile, submerging the beautiful Island of Philae - the colourfully painted Temple of Isis was raised above the waters and relocated to Agilika. Discover the columns terminating in lotus flowers or the open air temple built by the Roman Emperor Trajan as you stroll beside the shores of this tiny island. Many river cruise itineraries will offer an excursion to Pharoah Rameses II sandstone twin temples of Abu Simbel, similarly relocated above the flood waters of the Nile in the 1960’s. This huge temple complex, including twin temples to Rameses and his wife Nefertari commemorate a battle victory, and immediately present four massive statues of Rameses, leading to an interior enclosed within the cliff base. The chambers found here are lit only from the outside, displaying the many statues and facades of Rameses and the gods Amun-Ra and Re-Harakhte in shadow. Only twice a year does the rising sun light up the back wall of the innermost shrine and light upon the faces of the gods found there. A river cruise along the Nile is a thrilling discovery of the ancient past - an experience not to be missed! Robert your Cruise Consultant edition one 2013 vacations | 11

Best value holidays and airfares If you haven’t had a chance to meet the team at Accor Vacation Club Travel by Flight Centre, visit or call them today and let them find the perfect holiday for you.

“I love to take walking tours when I travel. It’s a great way to get a local’s insight on the history and culture of a destination. I’m looking forward to my next trip to Cuba” Ms Lewis said.

Store manager, Cara Rogan, and her team members have all travelled extensively, and between them, visited many of the world’s premier tourist destinations. With 30 years worth of travel experience the team knows the ins and outs of a great holiday.

Consultant Connie Adams has an extensive travel background she has been to the UK and Europe several times, while also travelling to USA, New Zealand, Africa, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Bali, United Emirates, Fiji, Vanuatu, Hawaii and Cook Islands.

Cara Rogan has a wealth of travel knowledge and enjoys the challenge of putting together complex travel itineraries. Cara has travelled throughout Europe, the USA, Canada, United Emirates, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Cook Islands, New Zealand, Fiji, Vanuatu and Norfolk Island.

“My favourite holiday was a safari in Kenya, absolutely amazing. However the place I love to travel to again and again is Sicily. I know the best way to travel around, places to stay, eat and have many tips on the hidden treasures of Sicily” said Mrs Adams. The team at Accor Vacation Club Travel by Flight Centre can book any of your travel needs, including airfares, accommodation, insurance or tours. We are now offering Flight Centre’s new exclusive The Captain’s Red Label Fares.

Stacy Loxton is the store’s Canada Guru having lived in the spectacular Canadian Rockies. She also travels regularly to the USA and has spent time in Europe, New Zealand, Fiji and Thailand. “My number one tip for any destination is a Hop-on Hop-off city tour, this gives you a great opportunity to get you bearings of a new city while also crossing off must see landmarks along the way” Ms Loxton said.

At Accor Vacation Club Travel by Flight Centre we go out of our way for you.

Consultant Sharni Lewis has travelled throughout Europe, North Africa, the USA, New Zealand, Fiji and South East Asia.

t’s another feather in the cap for Accor Vacation Club’s comprehensive refurbishment schedule of Club properties. “Our upgrading programme recognises our commitment to maintaining the high level of quality and finish that our Members expect of Accor Vacation Club,” says Wayne Greenwood, General Manager Resort Operations. The spacious apartments at Pinnacle, all featuring balconies, have been soundproofed against their very urban environment and reflect quintessential Sydney - the design featuring a palette of warm whites, with rich bronze, teal and magenta highlights. Colourful artworks of the city by night, new timber, glass and stainless steel finishes create a sassy and sophisticated look, and each apartment is comprehensively appointed to ensure a great stay. Sydney! Champagne and croissants for breakfast? Prawns and oysters from the nearby Sydney Fish Market at lunchtime? Sundowners at sunset? A big barbie for dinner? Mini-golf anyone? You’ll be glad you went to the top. The Pinnacle is the first vacation ownership property in Australia to reach #1 position on TripAdvisor in its category, the ‘go to’ website for hotel reviews throughout the world. Day to day operations may have something to do with it! General Manager, Helen Hemingway, is mentioned in many of the reviews. Helen has a long history in timeshare and has worked in the business on four continents. Her understanding of what Members want and her passion for making their time at Pinnacle memorable is exceptional. She runs this boutique property single handedly, ably supported by Manjit Surry, who seamlessly covers for Helen two days a week.

Vicki cannot speak highly enough of how great it is to take a cruise, never a dull moment, working out each day on the latest gym equipment with the best views, steam rooms, sauna, fun activities, mouth watering meals, relaxing by the pool, endless day trips to the islands and of an evening dressing up in formal dress or perhaps dancing to the music on a themed Caribbean night. Vicki returned and booked the next cruise to North Queensland and her husband will be joining, although this will be his first cruise and prefers to have land in sight I am sure this is the beginning of a new way to holiday.

We’ve taken the hassle out of the quarterly instalment option. All you need to do is provide us with a Bank Direct Debit Authority or a Credit Card Authority, then every quarter, we’ll take care of the rest! If you do not provide this authority, we cannot enable the quarterly payment option. Remember you could run the risk of a late fee and/or interest charges being charged to your member account, if you do not pay your annual fees in full on time. You can find more information about paying your fees in your PDS. The Direct Debit Authority form can be downloaded by clicking on the link on your email invoice, or direct from the website at:
