A special thanks all Accor Vacation Club Cruise Consultants and Members for their contribution.

From the CEO

I

am pleased to report that 2014 has been a very busy and productive year at Accor Vacation Club.

Our refurbishment team this year has completed the Sebel Vines, Puka Park Lodge and Novotel Lake Crackenback Resorts to the very high standard we have all now come to expect. Photos of these projects are featured inside this edition. We have also completed the rebrand of 8 of our properties to the Sebel brand. The Sebel is a brand rich in history, its reputation for style, sophistication and personal service aligns perfectly with our vision for the Club. We also have completed the planning scope for the refurbishment of Pinnacle Valley, Palm Cove and Nusa Dua Bali Resorts for next year. The initial designs are very exciting and I look forward to sharing with you the photos of the completed product next year.

features, the key ones being the ability to check availability and an enhanced user friendly reservation portal. The new site also allows you to change your own personal information and even check the weather forecast and local events whilst planning your holiday. One of the things to look forward to next year will be the Club acquiring additional inventory in some new locations to add to your existing property portfolio. We will make an announcement early next year so watch this space... Finally, on a personal note; I wanted to share with you my highlight of 2014. My family last month achieved a long time dream of becoming Australian citizens. I would also like to wish you and your families a wonderful 2015 and hope that all wishes and dreams come true.

Our Accor Hotels Select program continues to be a very popular Personal Benefit, with Members this year using their points to enjoy over 13,000 room nights in 20 properties. Just recently we added several Northern Territory locations to the program which has been very well received. We will continue in the New Year to add locations to expand the program and continue to create more wonderful holiday experience opportunities. Another great way to use your points, Accor Vacation Club Cruises has also had a very successful year. Members this year enjoyed 415 cruises in almost every major cruise destinations across the globe. In fact a couple of Members were lucky enough to complete a round the world cruise. This year we also conducted a record amount of Member workshops, with over 3,000 Members attending 21 workshops across Australia and New Zealand. If you didn’t attend a workshop this year look out for announcements for the 2015 schedule which for the first time will also include a number of themed party Member events. Just recently we have also launched our upgraded Member website. It has a fresh new look and a much improved viewing experience. It includes a lot of new

Accor Vacation Club Cruises

Ahoooooy Matey’s

it’s Captain Scott with his latest edition of cruise news! Joining me this week is first mate Jackie! Ahoy – it’s cruise time! (…a ship horn blowing in the distant back ground!). Whether you’re just now putting your toes in the water, deciding if cruising is the right holiday for you; or if you’re already one of the “cruise converted” on your second or third cruise; or even luckier, if you’re one of those amazing multi-cruising aficionados, your friends at Accor Cruise Club have you covered! There are a surprising number of really great cruising styles and bucket-list cruise options under the cruise rainbow to choose from (believe it or not there are over 10,000 different itineraries – OMG!). But don’t fret and come aboard as Captain Scott and First Mate Jackie make it easy and give you a shipfull of cruising ideas and tips for helping you choose your first cruise holiday or your next one, or your next one…! We’ve come up with an easy introduction and

many ideas for each type of cruiser category that most cruisers fall into and will share info we have gathered from our own cruising experiences and from other fellow Accor members across the globe! Are you ready? I just heard the ship horn blowing in the distance) All ashore that’s going ashore! But not us, we’re going cruising! For ease of reference please check out these cruising categories that most of us fall into and proceed accordingly:

“believe it or not there are over ,000 different

itineraries”

First-time Cruisers: The Cruise initiated (on your 2nd or 3rd cruise)

The Cruise Aficionados - multi-cruising globe-trotters, who sometimes spend more days in any given month, lounging on a cruise deck chair or exploring a new cruise port than they do on land! It’s no secret this status is Jackie and my personal goal!!!)

First Time Cruisers

Most of us have seen “The Love Boat” on TV and dreamed of a cruise to an exotic isle somewhere with your significant other... or the family, or grab some friends and let’s get a cruise on!

For first timers an ideal itinerary sails from your nearest major capital. What about a quick overnight cruise to nowhere - sailing out of Sydney Harbour Heads and then returning home again; or even a three day taster cruise from Brisbane to Sydney or Melbourne to Adelaide… it’s just enough time to get a feel for your cruise ship, and all the entertainment options on board. Broadway-style shows, pools and relaxing spas, movies, games and Kid’s Club, casino and bars, rock climbing and more… some ships even have flow-riders for surfing, ice-skating rinks, dodgem cars, mini-

10

vacations edition two • 2014

golf, basketball courts the list is almost endless! And then there’s the food – all you can eat buffets, ala carte dining rooms, cafes, pizza and BBQ, specialty restaurants showcasing Michelin starred chefs… and room service!!! Did I mention that your on board accommodation, meals, entertainment and more are included?? Throw in a few exotic destinations and you have a holiday made in heaven!

The Cruise Initiated on your 2nd or 3rd cruise

Now you know that a cruise holiday is all-inclusive, with amazing destinations and more, it’s time to discover the world!

Australia and New Zealand: You can stay close to home with cruises around Australia’s superb coastline, the magnificent Kimberley, the gorgeous Barrier Reef or even a full circumnavigation, if you want to go the whole way! The beautiful Murray River could also be on the cards cruising along the river banks on board an historic paddle wheeler and experiencing native flora and fauna up close and personal. Or sail a little further afield to New Zealand, for the superb sights of Milford Sound, unique Napier, City of Sails - Auckland and the celebrated Bay of Islands. Asia and Beyond: It’s definitely time to expand your cruising horizons to Asia where you can choose to cruise the exotic coastlines or winding rivers. Discover China’s Three Gorges, Cambodia’s Angkor Wat temples, the stunning limestone isles of Halong Bay in Vietnam, culturally rich Indonesian islands – each with a different aspect, and charming cherry blossom laden Japan. Mediterranean: Halfway across the world, the Mediterranean awaits you. With so much on offer from the jewel-like Greek isles to Italy’s stunning coastlines and captivating ports (Genoa, Rome Civitavecchia, Venice), the French Riviera and the more enticing Spanish and North African coastal regions, you are sure to find many itineraries and cruise lines to suit.

Europe and More: Is Europe more your thing? Try a European River Cruise on the famous waterways of Europe including romantic rivers like the Rhine, Moselle, Danube, Seine, Saune, Rhone, Po and Volga, taking in famous cities from Paris to Budapest from Cologne to Avignon. You too could cruise through the very heart of Europe, sailing via Netherlands, France, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Italy and more! The luxury of a river ship provides all the cozy comforts of home, with the adventure of a new destination with every bend in the river. Once you’ve tried and tested a number of cruise lines and destinations, you are ready to take the next step in your cruising lifestyle…

The Cruise Aficionados

Ok you’ve made it to Aficionados status. Well done, welldeserved! You’re living your holiday dreams whether it’s because of all those great business deals you completed or perhaps you’ve simply earned your elite status through well-earned retirement! Now its time to put all those fruits of your past labor to work and sit back, relax, enjoy, explore and plan your cruise! Having been on several cruises by now and hopefully experiencing some of the

awesome cruise line styles, ship sizes, overall themes and memorable (and some not so memorable) ship décor choices, you probably have a preferred cruise line, a favourite ship or at least a good handful of top picks you want to cruise again on for your next sojourn. Now that all that testing and trialling is behind you, its time to take your cruise holidaying to the next level – its time to explore and relax your way around the world, floating, indulging, and holidaying on your favourite cruise lines or ships (or group of ships). Its time to discover that (as trite as it may sound) … all the world is your cruising oyster! Here are some of the best cruising destinations you can’t afford to miss out on and you should consider! They all can be reached from the comfort of your favourite cruise ship or cruise line! Come with us as we highlight our top ten cruise itineraries or destinations. Alas, they are not in any specific order!!! That’s up to you – we just want to make sure take them all in: vacations edition two • 2014

Northern Europe (Baltic Cruising and further West to Iceland)

A delightful cruise destination steeped in history, multiple cultures, multiple countries, gorgeous Scandinavian/ Norwegian fjords and famous for being the “home of the midnight sun”. Best time to visit is during the Northern Hemisphere summer April through October. Don’t miss this opportunity to explore the rich history, art and architecture of this exciting region with some amazing ports of call and countries to choose from including: Copenhagen, Denmark: Oslo, Bergen, Geiranger Fjord in Norway: Tallinn, Estonia; St Petersburg, Russia; Stockholm, Sweden; Riga, Latvia; Helsinki, Finland; Germany; United Kingdom and Holland… If you really have the adventurer spirit there’s some amazing itineraries that take in a bit further West around Iceland and over and up around the base of Greenland – Ponant’s luxury ship the Le Soleal is the cruise to be on next July, 2015.

Greek Isles

Mediterranean & Adriatic islands – With every trip to the Mediterranean you’re sure to discover something new, another grand old city, another amazing dish or vista and of course another tantalizing wine! We just want to make sure you don’t miss out on some of the Meds many unique island treasures as well, perhaps trying to include some of the more enchanting ones on your next cruising visit. Here’s just but a few to ensure you include: Olbia, Italy on the island of Sardinia, or in the Adriatic Sea the Croatian Islands of Korcula or Hvar, or perhaps the fascinating island of French Corsica via the ports of Ajaccio or Calvi. Of course there’s always Santorini, Greece worthy of several visits and it still takes our breath away every time we take in the vista from the white-washed hillside village back out towards our cruise ship…

Remote South Pacific and World Cruise Sectors or a Northern Pacific Jewels World Cruise

Don’t forget to sneak out to all its hidden treasures along the peripherals of the expansive ocean backdrop. Highly recommend a cruise among the Tahitian Islands whether it is on the aptly named “Paul Gaugin” of the deluxe Radisson TIP Be sure too include a couple Seven Seas cruise lines pre/post days to visit Kyoto, with its Tahiti based Japan just a little further ship or one of a handful inland! others that stop in Tahiti along the way – it’s not to be missed in this life time! The towering Bora Bora tropical volcanic reverse oasis and the exquisite French cuisine a la fresh Polynesian seafood style is heaven. From the South Pacific to the North Pacific, Japan has come back onto the world cruising stage with some phenomenal cruising itineraries around this island nation with ports to include Yokohama, Kushiro, Otaru, Hakodate and Aomori.

European River Cruises

You’ve probably being hearing about these cool niche cruises available across all the major river waterways of Europe. They are indeed a really intimate way to see the interior of Europe from the perspective of its old world waterways. While certainly not as roomy and full of all the extras of the larger cruise ships they do offer cozy cabins and even suites with full meal service and relaxing days lazily sailing up and down the river. Although some of its best highlights and most memorable meals come from forays ashore in the fabulous towns and villages sprinkled along the route, don’t be surprised when you board in Amsterdam and wake up in Budapest!!! A unique experience not to be missed. In fact some Accor cruisers prefer the river cruise experience more than the Ocean ships!!! Not only can you river cruise in Europe but there’s Russia, China, Burma, Vietnam and now even the mighty Mississippi in the USA!

These types of cruises continue to be very popular for those that have that extra bit of time! This is the way to see the world or sections of it at your pace and from a very unique perspective and time frame! Cruises range from the famous Cunard liners that literally tour the world changing destinations and itineraries year after year a la Queen Mary II, Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Victoria! Always adding something new or revisiting world favourites! Joining the ranks of the Cunard’s on world cruises and sectors are cruise lines like Princess, Azamara, Holland America, Ponant, Oceania, Crystal, Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, MSC and Costa.

TIP

When in Europe these work as a great combination to a Mediterranean or Northern Europe cruise where you can explore the interior of Europe in 5 star luxury only unpacking once!

Ok now it’s your turn! Drop me a line and let me know where you have been cruising and what you recommend… even better what are your cruising tips!!! I can be reached at Accor Cruise Club at the following e-mail address: info@accorvacationclub.com.au

Member Stories We have had many wonderful stays with Accor over a long period of time, but a couple which spring to mind is the Mecure at Mt Buller (out of snow season), the other is Pinnacle Valley Resort and Crackenback Resort near Thredbo NSW. Whilst we thoroughly enjoy the comfort of the Accor Resorts, they are really only for our ‘bed, brekkie and dinner’, as we do not remain in the resorts but go out and see the world around us - we are outdoor people.

We have also stayed at the Crackenback Resort but again spent out time outdoors. We walked to the summit of Mt Kosciuszko and were on the summit for sunrise. Really on top of the world.

Chris and Ray Summers

At Mt Buller we enjoyed yet another climb to the summit and sat there watching sunset, in shorts and 5’c, then waling back to the carpark in the rapidly increasing low cloud. Out of this world. The other spot we visit from Pinnacle Valley Resort is Craig’s Hut at Clear Hills. We celebrated out 40th wedding anniversary at the Hut with 21 guests - some of whom also stayed at Pinnacle Valley. Our guests were transported to the Hut by a 4WD company in Mansfield, who also provided us with a magnificent BBQ meal. Sunrise at Craig’s Hut is out of this world.

Sun & Fun

The Great Outdoors In February 2014 we went on a 9 day Sunshine Coast adventure for some R & R. We stayed at Twin Waters, what an amazing experience, the apartments are amazing, I love how you open the door and look out on the lagoon. During our stay we were introduced to Susie Nau an Accor Vacation Club consultant, Susie met us and went through our membership, it had been a while since we had done that. Susie was amazing she was not pushie, she sold us the benefits and left it up to us to get back to her. We did get back to her and ended up upgrading our membership. We can now look forward to more holidays using this amazing club.

Carmen Magri-Olson We stayed at the Pullman Arcadia Naithon Beach in Phuket I must say It is the best resort we have stayed at, it is ideally situated for the beach and numerous local beach side restaurants and shops, they also have a beach shuttle bus every thirty minutes if you don’t want the attempt the stairs down to the beach. There are several pools with the main pool having a view of the sea. The rooms are very well appointed and extremely comfortable all with balconies

with either sea or garden views complete with fly screens on the balcony doors. The on site restaurants have varied menu with Elements having several themed nights weekly also they are extremely affordable. Every staff member who we met or even passed greeted us with enthusiasm which was genuine. Nothing is to much trouble for any of the staff. We highly recommend this Accor resort we will defiantly be returning.

What Our Members Have to Say Here’s some great pics of our 5 year old Leticia reeling in her first ever fish, from the beach straight out the front of the Sebel Busselton. The beach is lovely and protected and a five minute walk from the apartments and best of all, there’s fish to catch.

Catch & Release

A great effort by Leticia, especially as you might be able to see the tip of the rod broke off during the fight, and is still dangling around the line making life difficult. This healthy little flathead was released to grow bigger and fight another day. A truly memorable holiday – thanks Sebel Busselton.

Brendan Egan We have been members of the club for seven years and have visited many of the club properties both in Australia and New Zealand. One property that we had always wanted to visit but could never manage it was Lake Crackenback Resort. This year we finally got there and it was well worth the wait. The resort is nestled at the foot of the Main Range in the Snowy Mountains. It is about twenty minutes from Jindabyne and only about 10 minutes from Thredbo. As you can imagine, it is very busy in winter, yet the Snowy’s aren’t just about winter. It is a superb region to visit year round. We went in early autumn and found the weather to be just right. The days were cool and sunny, just right for touring through the breathtaking scenery. Our accommodation was a great, two bedroom, two bathroom apartment with a magnificent lounge / dining room with a balcony that gave stunning views over Lake Crackenback and the Main Range beyond. The fully equipped kitchen allowed us to cook for ourselves. On the nights when that didn’t appeal, we had the choice of two, top class restaurants on the property. One of these restaurants accepted our Advantage Plus card so not only did we dine well but also relatively cheaply! We found that, apart from these indulgences, the Resort had lots to offer, from a little bit of golf to some Segway riding by way of some canoeing and bicycle riding. If that is not enough, there is a very nice heated, enclosed, pool and well-equipped gym. There is also a well-patronised Day Spa. The area between the Resort and Thedbo is threaded with walking and mountain bike tracks. If you fancy a

bit of bush-walking there is a very pleasant walk from the Ski-Tube (just up the road) along the Thredbo River to Thredbo Diggings camp ground. The very helpful people at Reception can provide you with maps. While you are staying here, do try to explore the surrounding countryside and experience its amazing scenery. We took a trip over Dead Horse Gap, down to Tom Groggan Station and Khancoban along the Alpine Way. It is only about 85 kms each way. The road, while windy, is surfaced and well maintained. This is real “Man from Snowy River” country. Another great drive is around the other side of the Main Range up to Perisher and Charlotte Pass. The scenery is quite different to the Thredbo side. For the walkers, Charlotte Pass offers a starting off point to some great Alpine walks. For the non walkers, visit the lookout at Charlotte’s Pass and take in the majestic views across the roof of Australia to Kosciusko and Mount Townsend. If you intend to visit Lake Crackenback Resort, I would urge you to book well ahead, 11 or 12 months if possible. Like us, you will find that is well worth the effort.

Refurbishments

The Sebel Swan Valley The Vines

The “Wine Country Resort Series” The “Wine Country | Resort Series” room was designed to take into consideration the environmental and climate conditions associated with the properties. This design is a variation of the already successfully implemented “Coastal & Spa Country| Resort Series” adapted for Wine region locations. The variation in the “Resort Series” is achieved through the use of local inspired design elements, wall coverings and tiles in conjunction with the use of a rich sophisticated color palette and finishes creating warmth for this cooler wine country region. The modern furniture design is complemented by the queen lounge, which also incorporates a sofa bed system for practicality. The statesman style arm chairs are also a key furniture element to accentuate the comfortable relaxed reading and indoor recreation space. In the bedroom the key design element is the padded bed head, of which the theme is carried through to the bed runner and scatter cushions. The addition of electric fire places in the two bedroom apartments enhances the ambiance and luxury of these apartments. Strata Teak stacked timber feature walls and dimming pendant light further give a sense of luxury and warmth. 18

Environmental initiatives have also been implemented with the replacement of high energy down lights with LED and fluorescent fittings and all bathroom fittings and fixtures have been chosen based on their water saving capacity. In addition to this new Bluetooth technology is being provided to enable members and guests music options from all personal Bluetooth capable devices.
