FROM THE CEO Dear Member, As 2018 comes to a close, I am pleased to report to you that your team at Accor Vacation Club have had another very busy and productive year. It has been great that we have seen an increase in Member reservations since we moved the facility back to our office on the Gold Coast. The feedback from so many of you since we relocated the service has been wonderful. In addition to an increase in Club property reservations, the Accor Hotel Select Program has again this year recorded over 10,000 room nights booked through this terrific partner program. We also launched our new Accor Vacation Club Travel Program early in the year which has been a huge success, with more than 2,000 travel bookings made in its first year of operating. Our refurbishment team have just finished another fabulous makeover at The Sebel Busselton in Western Australia, making that the fourth resort to receive their ‘magic’ touch this year. Next year will see a full refurbishment of one of our most iconic addresses, The Sebel Sydney Manly Beach, as well as a soft refurbishment of The Sebel Vines Resort in the beautiful Swan Valley. Once we have finalised the designs for these refurbishments, I look forward to sharing them with you all. I can assure you, the finished results will be quite outstanding. This year we have added additional inventory at both the Mercure Gold Coast Resort as well as The Sebel Sydney Manly Beach. Due to the demand for Manly, we will start 2019 by adding an additional four units at this Resort into the Club, bringing our total holding to 25 apartments. If you haven’t been yet, I highly recommend that you visit this beautiful beachside location. 2018 was a successful year for awards and recognition, starting with the Grand Mercure Basildene Manor receiving a highly soughtafter TripAdvisor Travellers Choice award. For those of you who have enjoyed a stay at this property, it will come as no surprise, as Basildene Manor is truly a remarkable, one-of-a-kind experience. We were also the proud recipient of four awards from the Australian Timeshare and Holiday Ownership Council, winning Resort of the Year, Resort Performer of the Year, Corporate team and PR & Communications team awards. More information can be found on these achievements inside this edition.
The PR & Communications award recognised amongst other things our renewed focus on social media engagement and connecting with our Accor Vacation Club Member community online. We, were thrilled to receive a special mention for our Members’ keen participation on our Facebook page - so basically, the award really should go to you! Congratulations to you - our wonderful engaged Members - who continually provide us with such fabulous content and comments online! We now have 8,300+ followers on just our Facebook page alone. If you want to keep updated on what happens, as it happen, then please like and follow our Facebook page and Instagram account. Finally, I celebrated my 10th anniversary at Accor Vacation Club this year and would personally like to thank you all for the support and feedback that you given me throughout 2018 and over the past decade. Not only does it mean a lot to me, but it really does provide me with direction in making the Club the success it is today. On behalf of all the team here at Accor Vacation Club, I would like to wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas, a wonderful upcoming holiday period and a New Year full of happy holidays and memories. Warm regards,
Craig Wood Chief Executive Officer Accor Vacation Club CEO@accorvacationclub.com.au

Fairway to Holiday Heaven Teeing up great golfing experiences across Australia Let’s face it – most families and friendship groups have at least one. That person who always insists on playing at least one round at the nearest golf course when away on holiday. Possibly, they are a true fanatic who’d prefer to leave a few essential travel items at home rather than leave their trusty golf clubs behind. Or maybe they are an up-withthe-sun golfer who welcomes sunrise with a swing and a smile, before settling into sightseeing and happy hour when visiting somewhere new. Well, golf lovers – this one is for you! This issue, we’ve put together an extensive Australian bucket list of great golf courses and golf-friendly Accor Vacation Club properties to help guarantee more ‘green’ time on your next trip away. Fortunately, great golf is par for the course at many of Accor Vacation Club’s destinations. Read on for a selection of our favourite golfing spots, plus ideas for non-golf related alternatives in each destination to make sure your travel companions enjoy the experience as much as you do.
Gold Coast, QLD In November 2017, Accor Vacation Club welcomed one of Australia’s original prestige golfresort addresses, the Mercure Gold Coast Resort, to its Australian network. It has already proven a hugely popular addition to the Accor Vacation Club family over the past year, and is a major coup for Members who love to stay and play a variety of top notch golf courses within short walking or driving distance of their accommodation. The Mercure Gold Coast Resort represents Accor Vacation Club’s fourth hotel location on the Gold Coast and is in close proximity to not one, but five affiliated premiership golf courses that together are referred to as the ‘Green Belt’. Take your pick from Lakelands, Palm Meadows, Robina Woods, Colonial and The Glades, designed by Greg Norman. A different golf course for every day of the working (or holidaying) week! Since opening its doors 21 years ago, the iconic Mercure Gold Coast Resort has earned a strong track record in supporting major sporting events - not least of all, in conjunction with events associated with the adjacent world-class Palm Meadows course which has hosted a wide range of international tournaments over the last 25 years. As its closest golf course, Palm Meadows provides a truly tranquil backdrop for Members staying at the Mercure Gold Coast Resort, Accor Vacation Club Apartments. The property is also ideally located for visitors to explore other great attractions in the region - beautiful beaches, lush hinterland, thrilling theme parks, the ‘Glitter Strip’ of Surfers Paradise, plus many restaurants, bars and shopping that make this destination so sought after.
Mercure Gold Coast Resort, Gold Coast
Golfers will love: An amazing choice of five premiership golf courses on their doorstep when staying at Accor Vacation Club Apartment’s apartments at the Mercure Gold Coast. Plus, for those who want to lower their handicap and improve their game, a session at Palm Meadows driving range is highly recommended. The Pro team there is friendly and bound to have a few tips to get you playing the best golf of your life. Everyone will love: Trying the Gold Coast’s newest attraction - Top Golf Gold Coast. This venue features fun and competitive golf games for all ages, with climate-controlled playing “bays” similar to a bowling lane. Fun for all members of the family. There is also an impressive food and drinks menu, HDTVs to watch your favorite sporting games live, and a music selection that will make every visit feel like a party. Not a traditional golfing experience, but one the entire gang will enjoy!

Twin Waters Golf Club, Queensland
Sunshine Coast, QLD Sunshine and great golf abounds at the Twin Waters Golf Club, one of the top six courses in Australia, and of course the absolute best course on the Sunshine Coast. Designed by five times British Open champion Peter Thomson and partner Mike Wolveridge, the course at Twin Waters has a challenging layout, enjoyed against a picturesque coastal backdrop. Immaculately manicured, players will see kangaroos and birdlife sharing the space guaranteeing an enjoyable game for all that play this tranquil course. In reviewing the course last year Golf Australia magazine wrote, “Complementing the quality of the design are the beautifully manicured playing surfaces. The greens and fairways are consistently presented at a high standard, which is one reason why the PGA of Australia has hosted more National Finals of the Holden Scramble here than anywhere else in its 25-year history.” In addition to its second to none presentation, those Members staying at Twin Waters Sunshine Coast, Accor Vacation Club Apartments will also appreciate the close location of this 18hole, 72 par championship golf course. Highly convenient, as are the facilities of sister resort, the Novotel Twin Waters, situated next door). So whether it’s warm sunshine, championship golf courses, sandywhite beaches or wilderness walks there is always something for everyone on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.
Golfers will love: Twin Waters wide fairways and large putting surfaces. Be warned…this course might not appear to be too difficult on first look, however it plays much tougher than first impressions, so park your ego with your buggy and enjoy the challenge! Everyone will love: Mudjimba’s patrolled surf beach, the perfect complement to our brilliant beach houses. Accor Vacation Club’s selection of sophisticated self-contained beach houses and apartments are a short walk from one of the Sunshine Coast’s best ‘hidden gems’, Mudjimba Beach. This secluded beach is bound by the Maroochy River on one side, and the Pacific Ocean on the other. Best of all, this aquatic playground is patrolled daily, 365 days of the year, which is reassuring for any casual beachgoer. Along the beach you’ll find excellent fishing spots in the rip gutters and at the river mouth just south of Twin Waters. For surfers there are consistent surf breaks along the beach with better banks towards Point Arkwright. The patrolled parts of the beach are perfect for the kids’ boogie board adventures.
Palm Cove, Tropical North Queensland The Great Barrier Reef off North Queensland’s coast offers a world of colour to explore, thanks to its abundant coral gardens and marine life. But, let’s face it – for vacationing golfers, green is the only colour that really matters! It’s a good thing that Palm Cove’s signature colour is indeed green, with several great golf courses to tempt you away from the beckoning big blue of the reef. For Accor Vacation Club Members staying at The Sebel Palm Cove Coral Coast or the Coral Coast Resort Palm Cove Accor Vacation Club Apartments, the Novotel Palm Cove provides an excellent 9 hole paid golf course in close proximity to your apartment, and great facilities. Set amidst 45 hectares of gardens this course welcomes visitors, and features lush fairways fringed by mountains and graceful melaleuca gums. Watch out for the numerous water hazards as you play this course, and play to win! Wedged between the Great Dividing Ranges and the Coral Sea is a public access course, the Palm Cove Country Club, which also offers nine-holes in a friendly and relaxed environment. Perfect for casual players who don’t take the game too seriously, this course features seven par threes and two par fours. The highlight is a great par four ninth hole, back to the club house. For more serious players, it’s worth checking out the 18-hole championship golf course at Paradise Palms. This course hosted the Mercedes-Benz Cairns Classic on the Australian PGA Pro-Am circuit which attracts some of Australia’s best professional golfers. Designed by Graham Marsh and Ross Watson, Paradise Palms is currently ranked in the top 50 public access golf courses in Australia by Golf Digest. But be warned - Marsh and Watson were commissioned by the o riginal Japanese owners, Daikyo, to create Australia’s most difficult tournament venue when they designed this course– and they successfully met the brief! Having said this, the course is in fact suitable for golfers of all levels, and features wide fairways and peaceful surroundings.
Golfers will love: Multiple tee options available at Paradise Palms, depending on your comfort level. Paradise Palms is a par 71 course, however offers multiple tee options, so players of all levels can confidently enjoy a round. Following its update in 2017, almost 250 metres has been added to the length of the course with new tees being built on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th and 18th holes, bringing a number of hazards and bunkers back into play. Everyone will love: Having your choice of beachside or rainforest paradise, right on your doorstep. Accor Vacation Club’s apartments are located just a short stroll to a tropical palmfringed beach. The unspoilt paradise lies parallel to the beautiful Great Barrier Reef and is within easy reach of the renowned Daintree Rainforest and tropical Atherton Tablelands for your choice of daytrips. Pacific Bay Resort, New South Wales
“your friends will be ‘green’ with envy on your next golf holiday.”
Coffs Harbour, NSW What is better than having direct beach access from the resort you’re staying at? How about having your very own 9-hole golf course to practice on? Pacific Bay Resort, Accor Vacation Club Apartments offer you both those things, ensuring your friends will be ‘green’ with envy on your next golf holiday. Enjoyable, interesting and well maintained, the Bay Golf Course is ideal for beginners of professionals wanting to improve their short game. For serious golfers those wanting to explore further afield after playing the resort course, try the Bonville Golf Course, a short 20 minute drive south. Widely regarded as ‘Australia’s most beautiful mainland golf course’, Bonville is home of the Australian Ladies Classic and has a great restaurant onsite for those who want to make a day of it. The Coffs Harbour Golf Club is another nearby option, a championship course offering 27 holes with three different layouts for the touring golfer to try. When it comes to accommodation, Pacific Bay Resort, Accor Vacation Club Apartments provide guests with the perfect balance between fun and relaxation in a peaceful location,
convenient to the heart of Coffs Harbour. In addition to the golf course, the resort has three tennis courts, and three heated swimming pools, offering everything you could want in a place to get away from it all.
Hunter Valley, NSW
Golfers will love: Just enough hazards on the Pacific Bay course to keep things interesting. For those keeping things casual and local, the resort course has a great putting green to warm up on, and offers stunning views and a welcome coastal breeze. The signature 9th hole is an exciting way to wrap up you game, surrounded by water and enticing players to aim for an ‘island’ shot to make par. Golf accessories and a cafe are also within the Pro Shop.
This spectacular 18-hole, par 71 course (designed by Greg Norman) is rated among the top 2% of courses nation-wide. That makes it a must-play location for those who love the game. Described as “challenging but fair to all handicaps’, the course is an easy two hour drive from Sydney and provides a beautiful backyard scene for those Members staying at the Grand Mercure The Vintage, Accor Vacation Club Apartments. Convenience plus!
Everyone will love: Ticking a sunset camel ride on the beach off their bucket list! Forget the big banana. If bunkers have been giving you grief all day, then it might be time to let a camel deal with the sand underfoot for a change. If you want to try something fun, relaxing but entirely different, then perhaps a Coffs Coast Camel Ride is for you. Coffs Coast Camels has 20 camels hailing from Alice Springs at the ready for beach rides, sunset and twilight tours and camel safaris, which last around 30 minutes. It’s something couples and families can equally enjoy.
As refined as its name suggests, The Vintage Golf Club in the Hunter Valley is widely regarded as one of the most elegant championship courses in Australia, and is home of the NSW Open Golf Championships, held each November.
The winding course offers a relaxed scene, serving up a feast for the senses for players – a mix of regal vineyards and bucolic views in the distance, punctuated by eucalyptus forests, wetlands and peaceful creeks at different twists and turns. The first nine holes are a good selection of short par 4s, while the rest of the course demands more accurate shots that will test your putting prowess but certainly boost your ego if successful. Golfers will love: Playing the ‘wine and vine’ seventh hole. According to Golf Digest magazine, “The par-5 seventh takes you on a viticulture tour, up a steep hill from the tee, and then down it all the way to a slippery left-to-right sloping green. Miss the fairway or green left, and your ball could end up in the neighbouring winery’s next ‘vintage.” We prefer to think of it as the seventh heaven hole – a win/win situation, whether you end up direct on the green, or scrambling to the nearest winery for your ball, and a cheeky refreshment along the way! Everyone will love: Exploring the expansive and fragrant Hunter Valley Gardens. Far from your typical flower patch, the amazing Hunter Valley Gardens span some 25 acres with ten separate feature themed gardens to explore – not least of all the prized Rose Garden with thousands of varieties on display. Overall there are 8 kilometres of garden trails to enjoy, with special features along the way such as a 10 metre high waterfall above a sunken garden, and a storybook garden for younger family members in mind. The Gardens host special events throughout the year, including a ‘snow time in the gardens’ and Easter event. Its famous Christmas Lights Spectacular, which is on from November 02 - January 26, 2019 is the largest lights display in the The Vintage Golf Club, Hunter Valley, Southern Hemisphere! Southern Highlands, NSW With scenery reminiscent of rural England, the Southern Highlands is something special. A classic retreat from all that is urban and suburban, exuding heritage charm, gorgeous gardens, rolling hills and forests at every turn. For this very reason, The Sebel Bowral Heritage Park is one of Accor Vacation Club’s most popular addresses, with modern, fully self-contained apartments just moments from the heart of town. Keen golfers will be pleased to know that the Bowral Golf Club is even closer – right next door in fact! Not only does that mean that Members can enjoy views over the beautiful fairways from the comfort of their fireplace, but there are no excuses for missing tee off during your next stay.
Golfers will love: Trading their golf club temporarily for a cricket bat to explore the Don Bradman Museum. Ok, it might not be exactly the right sport, however surely one great sportsperson can appreciate another?! Sports fans and history buffs will be impressed to know that the famous Bradman Museum and the International Cricket Hall of Fame, are both within walking distance of The Sebel in Bowral, ensuring that this attraction is a must visit destination.
Bowral Golf Club, New South Wales
“One of our favourite features has to be the beautiful arbours and avenues of old English and native trees that border the fairways”
More than 115 years in the making, the Bowral Golf Club is considered one of the best country courses in New South Wales. The course layout suits all levels of golf, so novices are in luck. One of our favourite features has to be the beautiful arbours and avenues of old English and native trees that border the fairways. Stunning in any season! If you are keen to test drive this course on your next visit, Accor Vacation Club Members can pre-book tee times through the Club, to plan the experience in advance. Back at The Sebel Bowral Heritage Park Members and guests have complimentary use of the hotel’s heated swimming pool too, which is a great way to unwind and rest your weary muscles after a day on the course.
Everyone will love: Finding a treasure at Dirty Jane’s Emporium. A popular haunt for stylists, designers and bargain hunters alike! Lovers of vintage and antique wares should definitely stop by the iconic Dirty Jane’s in Bowral. There are more than 75 dealers across three impeccably presented warehouse spaces, so be prepared to shop until you drop, or just window shop the vintage furniture, jewellery, clothing and homewares on display. There is even an ‘artist-inresidence’ and Tea Salon. A civilized way to spend the day.
Creswick RACV Goldfields Course
Country Victoria For those Members who want to get in the swing on a rural retreat beyond Melbourne, then The Sebel Creswick Forest Resort is the place to stay, and play, in grand country style. One of the best forest golf courses in Victoria, the 18-hole Creswick RACV Goldfields Course, is conveniently located next door to The Sebel Creswick Forest Resort, and is definitely one to challenge and inspire punters. A true treasure in the heart of the goldfields district, this championship course has been designed by Tony Cashmore, who created it to highlight the stunning bushland setting and natural surrounds of the area. Featuring sloping fairways, languid lagoons and a mixture of well-placed bunkers, it is the perfect playground for experienced golfers who don’t mind slightly hilly terrain. That’s not to say that newcomers to the game won’t enjoy the goldfields course too. The beautiful scenery and spectacular views alone, combined with gently sloping walking conditions, will keep players of any handicap strolling along quite happily. Golfers will love: A full Par 3 course available on the Goldfields course, for those after a quicker round. It’s also ideal for those or who simply want to try something different after triumphing over the rest of the 18-hole course. There is also a practice driving range with grass tees, practice green and nets which is open to the public. It’s not necessarily a long course, but given it is quite hilly, we’d recommend checking out the golf carts on offer too for those who prefer to ‘drive’ the gold rush range! Love those buggies.
Everyone will love: The spa capital of Australia, located right on The Sebel Creswick Forest Resort’s doorstep! Golf widows will be thrilled to know that Victoria’s historic gold rush country is not only great for golf – it’s famous for being the nation’s mineral and day spa capital too. So if you prefer a green mineral mud mask as opposed to a golf green while on holidays, then you’re in luck! The destination encompassing Creswick and Daylesford has some of amazing natural mineral springs to explore. If modern day, state-ofthe-art treatments and massages are more your thing, then they are very easy to seek out. Check out the amazing list of local boutique day spas on offer in the district to revitalize your body and soul, not least of all historic Hepburn Bathhouse and Spa which has been welcoming those seeking rejuvenation since 1895. For something close to The Sebel Creswick Forest Resort, Members can visit the boutique day spa on offer at the neighbouring Goldfields RACV Golf Course complex (charges apply).

South Australia No golfing trip to South Australia is compete without a round on the Links Lady Bay Golf Course. As the number one resort, and public, course in the state, its clever design, vistas and local wildlife make it something special to experience. The well designed 18-hole golf course was masterminded by a trio of golfing greats – Jack Newton, John Spencer and Graeme Grant. It is considered a genuine ‘St Andrews’ style sand base course, and features subtle bent greens in the style of its Scottish cousin. A championship course where the untamed natural elements meet meticulously manicured fairways.
Golfers will love: Trying their skill against the wind on the signature 17th hole. While some of the short holes on this course are said to rival some of the most famous links courses in the world, it is Links Lady Bay’s 17th hole that is perhaps its’ most challenging and satisfying to complete under par. With the honour of being one of ‘Australia’s best holes’, the 17th tests players agility and skill, requiring them to drive into the wind in order to achieve its ambitious par 3 score. May the force – or the wind – be with you!
“the number one resort, and public, course in the state”
Links Lady Bay Golf Course, South Australia

Tempting Thailand It comes as no surprise to us that Australians are now among the most well-travelled people in the world. While there is no doubt that we still love exploring our own backyard, more than half of us now owns a passport which means that as a nation*, we’re probably likely to be headed overseas some point in the near future.
According to a recent report from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the most popular international destinations for Aussie’s remain New Zealand and Indonesia (primarily, Bali). However according to the Bureau of Statistics, Thailand continues to climb in popularity among travellers, and most of us would agree that it’s easy to see why. Known as ‘the land of smiles’, Thai people are genuinely warm and welcoming. Combine that with great hospitality, affordable dining, activities and an easy to manage short haul flight, and you have all the ingredients for a great (and good value) trip.
*DFAT, 2015 - 2017 report
The capital of Thailand, Bangkok, might be famous for its nightlife, bars and shopping, but many Australians tend to see this city as more of a stopover option before seeking out resorts on the coast or islands around the Andaman Sea. Here, travellers can experience some of Thailand’s most popular beaches and holiday at a more relaxed pace. Whether you are bold and budget conscious or more selective with luxury tastes – there is a location and hotel style to suit your needs.
If you are considering a trip to Thailand in the near future, Accor Vacation Club’s AccorHotels Select Elite and Select Asia Programs are definitely worth investigating, and are a smart way to leverage your Première Plus Membership to its full advantage. School Holidays Travel Tried and True Ideas for a Tear Free Trip
In need of a survival guide to get you through the upcoming school holidays? You are not alone. Family holidays are meant to be about making time and creating memories that your children will carry with them for the rest of their lives (ok that might be aiming too high…at least into next term!). But often, school holidays can be fraught with stress and problem solving that can easily sap the energy and magic right out of your vacation.
We can’t stress this enough. Let’s face it, everyone with school aged children will be planning to travel and book accommodation at the same time as you, so thinking ahead and making that travel booking needs to be done as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. As they say, the early bird gets the worm (or the room as the case may be.)
reason. The staff generally go above and beyond to entertain young guests while Mum and Dad kick back and have a chance to finish off breakfast at the restaurant buffet in peace! If your kids are older, perhaps a road trip and more adventure style options will seem less daunting. For example, the Gold Coast is famous for theme park fun if you think your kids are old enough to appreciate an action packed trip full of rollercoaster action. Melbourne offers everything you need to inject a little culture into your children’s lives. And the alpine regions of NSW and Victoria have adrenalin and snow adventures in easy reach, ideal for both summer and winter breaks that get you back in touch with nature and the great outdoors. It all depends on your family, so it pays to spend some time to consider your options in order to get this right.
Select a destination to suit the ages and interests of your family.
Apartments versus hotel rooms.
It pays to have a good think about your kids’ ages, and how well the destination you have in mind might meet their age requirements and keep them best occupied. If younger members of the family are entertained and happy, it gives you a chance to relax and enjoy yourself too.
Let’s face it. Sometimes more is just, well, more! To make sure your holiday vibe remains chilled, an apartment can be a great option, offering a true home away from home experience with the added benefit of more space. Often, apartments also include several separate guest rooms, kitchen and laundry facilities. Especially
Here, we share a few ideas to help smooth the way to a fun - not frightful - trip away with your children. Book early!
Overseas favourites like Bali and Fiji have great reputations as family destinations for those with younger children and babies, with good
great for those with larger families, who might not fit a traditional hotel room style configuration.
Plan ahead… and then plan B (and in some cases, C)
Consider inviting friends and family.
The most organised trip can easily get derailed, so it’s important to stay flexible, adapt to changes, have a plan B ready to go to if unforeseen problems crop up. A sense of humour is also essential to face issues with a smile and set the tone for your little ones! In terms of itineraries, it’s always a good idea to plan some structured time into your day to give focus and have something to look forward to, even if it’s as simple as a daily beach walk or board game. For more packed itineraries that have you out and about in your destination, don’t forget to factor in some down time to simply relax and veg out with your crew. Sometimes it’s the unplanned moments where true holiday magic and memories happen!
There are definite benefits to travelling with family (including grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles), or close friends. By agreeing to travel to a destination with your wolf pack, you can ensure there will always be trusted friends to join your kids in the pool for a game of Marco Polo, a mate to bring you a drink while you are slaving over the barbecue, and an extra set of eyes to watch your brood while you duck away for that much need afternoon holiday nap. Plus, you get to share your holiday experiences with people you care about, with stories to reminisce over for years to come. Pack a carry bag with essentials, treats and surprises. We all know that life happens, even to the best of us. To take the stress and drama out of excursions, day trip, flights and road trips always pack a carry back with you so that all the essentials you require are in reach. That includes first aid and toiletry essentials, and an extra set of clothes for each person (just in case!). Prepare your travel entertainment in advance too (charge those devices and pack those books and pencils!), and don’t forget some new gadgets or surprises to build moral and keep little minds engaged should you encounter delays on already long trips.

10 of the Coolest Destinations on Earth Looking for a change of pace? There’s more to our wondrous world than just the equatorial hot and steamy tropics. A light dusting of snow across any town or village and you have a winter wonderland in the offing. Think snow crested mountains, cruises to see sparkling glaciers and fjords soaring to the skies. Bundled up snowboarders carving up white powdery ski-fields and the obligatory roaring open fires to snuggle up next to as you keep warm and toasty. by Jackie Hamilton & Kevin Montalbo
Goddafoss, Iceland
Instead of white sand beaches, some major cities and towns get the white sprinkling of ice on everything – and they embrace it fully! In fact, the northern lights will show you a full rainbow of colours, and honestly, some destinations in the world become even more beautiful when they’re getting the snowy treatment. Even without snow they are still pretty spectacular! Want to get in the snowy action? Get out your pom-pom hat and winter woollies and let’s look at the coolest locations on the planet. St Basils Cathedral, Red Square, Moscow
1. Russia and the Baltics “Fascinating and astonishing” This is how you’ll describe the scenes of Red Square, Catherine’s Palace, the numerous onion-domed churches, St. Petersburg, the world-class magnificent Hermitage Museum and more. You won’t need to go in their winter because it’s pretty much cool year-round (speaking as a tropical Queenslander). Want to make the most out of the experience? Go in for a Baltic Cruise! You’ll explore gorgeous seascapes and beautiful towns and cities in North Europe with a blanket of white highlighting the cityscapes. From Sweden and Denmark to Russia and Estonia, you’ll soak up the rich histories of these iconic cities from Berlin and Moscow to Helsinki, Stockholm, Oslo and beyond.

2. Alaska, USA
3. Japan
Known as America’s last frontier, Alaska is home to seemingly untouched winter landscapes, with distinct panoramas that will leave you in awe. Alaska’s famous Inside Passage, generous glaciers, and an abundance of wildlife like you’ve seen before – and you can discover all this on an Alaska cruise expedition departing Vancouver, Seward or Whittier (Anchorage). You could even cruise from San Francisco or LA, if you happen to be there.
Japan is considered a year-round destination, exuding timeless beauty whatever month you may visit. Since it belongs to our cool list, there’s no doubt that the Land of the Rising Sun is simply stunning during wintertime. Ski-fields run over with so much powder snow you could ski or snowboard your way to Hakuba, Niseko, and Sahoro, each flourish with silky ski tracks, grab a snow-mobile, discover snow-monkeys in nearby hot springs (yes, there really are such a thing as snow-monkeys! Very cute.) The list is almost endless, and don’t forget to sample the freshest sushi or ramen noodles and a little saki… to keep yourself warm of course. You’ll be thanking us for this.
Explore the Inside Passage, befriend seals and whale watch, and, if you’re up for it (literally), board a helicopter over the gargantuan Juneau Icefield, Mendenhall and Taku Glaciers! As an addition, we would highly recommend extending to Denali National Park, which plays host to various winter activities such as dogsled races, wildlife watching, and stunning landscapes towered over by Mount McKinley, America’s tallest mountain. Of course there is always the Rocky Mountaineer Rail Journey, showcasing otherwise inaccessible wilderness of the Rocky Mountains in all of their magnificent glory. Secret haunts of bear and caribou, families of deer and soaring high in the sky, bald eagles. Excited yet? You should be!
Hubbard Glacier, Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska
Snow Monkeys, Nagano, Japan
4. Norway
Geiranger, Western Norway
For a mesmerising experience, the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights of Norway are a once in a lifetime spectacle that should not be missed by anyone. Considered as one of the most beautiful countries in the world, Norway is synonymous with fjords (where the term was first used) and mountainous glaciers that rank among Europe’s largest. Complement this with attractively quaint villages, and an arctic-inspired architecture in its charming cities, and you have something spectacular to visit.
5. Switzerland Well known as one of the best winter wonderland destinations of the world, Switzerland draws in thousands of tourists for its snow sports and winter events. However, there’s definitely more to do other than just skiing, tobogganing and snowboarding – you’ll find the Swiss culture wrapped in an authentic and traditional fondue, a tipple or two of the popular Kirsch cherry brandy (another method to keep you toasty warm), and Christmas and New Year’s celebrations that channel the most ancient of traditions. Build a snowman and fall in love with Switzerland…and we know you haven’t forgotten about all that Swiss milk chocolate!
6.
Shotover River, Queenstown, South Island New Zealand
New Zealand
You don’t have to go far from Oz to experience a beautiful winter – just a few hours or short cruise away is the Land of the Long White Cloud. While skiing and snowboarding are popular choices for tourists here, you can also enjoy some of the more traditional, non-wintery activities and adventures, despite the snow. There’s bungee jumping (OK the river at the bottom will be icy, icy cold but what the hey, if you are up for bungee, you’re up for anything right?), jet boating, visiting wine cellars (and of course, tastetesting the wine for… you know… for research purposes), discovering the unique Maori culture, and heading cross country for one of the most memorable winter road trips ever.

7. Austria
Salzburg, Austria
For a classic European winter, say hello to Austria. Outside of winter, the scenery is already set to inspire you with landscapes dotted by fairy-tale villages, green fir forests, and deep mystical lakes. Now imagine all of that with a blessing of powder white snow… simply marvellous! Other cultural treats to enjoy include the very popular Christmas markets where you’ll find delicate handmade souvenirs, the ubiquitous gluhwein (hot mulled wine), cream coloured ponies and crisp apple strudels, doorbells and sleighbells and schnitzels with noodles… OK these ARE a few of my favourite things! And, with a trip to Austria, they are likely to become yours too.
8. Iceland Love winter? What better way to celebrate the chilly season that to go to Iceland? Here, you’ll get the full experience of winter, as temperatures get really low while you see spectacular views of the Northern Lights from this island nation. Warm yourself up in the island’s naturally occurring volcanic hot springs and geysers (Did you know that most of Iceland’s power is geo-thermic making use of the numerous volcanoes that still today spew forth sparks aplenty, along with the creation of new land). Plus, for the thrill-seekers among you, the ultimate winter adventure snorkel (yes you heard right, I said snorkel). Don you mask

I hear you ask… this is where the tectonic plates between Europe and America merge – and how cool is that! Another country to add to your adventure bucket list!
Blue Lagoon, Iceland
9. Argentina If you’re headed for South America, make sure to visit Argentina and see the extraordinary Patagonia for yourself. Home to barren yet impressive vistas, glaciers, national parks, and animal wildlife reserves, suggesting an unforgettable adventure. The powerful and sprawling Perito Moreno glacier is a mustsee sight where you will take countless photos from various beautiful vantage points, each more perfect than the next. Even Perito Moreno Glacier, Santa Cruz Province, Argentina more spectacular is the cloudy turquoise lake, only surpassed by the snow-crowned you are lucky, shard of ice falling from the majestic mountain peaks reflecting in the waters. It’s a feeling of glaciers. Ans all this is just an expedition ship of zen, serene peaceful silence, broken only by nature away from our next destination… herself… a bird overhead, waters lapping the shore or, if
Senam Penguins, Antarctica
10. Antarctica Uninhabited but for the hardiest of wildlife and a few resilient, relentless scientists, this silent world is host to temperatures reaching -49°C… but the tranquil beauty is incredible. Located at the bottom of the world, Antarctica is truly an adventure waiting, and as with the ever-changing landscape, it never ceases to amaze. Witness sheaths of ice tumble from country-sized glaciers breaking into the tranquillity of the black dark ocean, zodiac or kayak among white, crystal blue icebergs as penguins play tag with each other, watch in amazement as the sky lights up with the Aurora Borealis, or the Southern Lights – an expedition to the South Pole is simply one of the most rewarding holiday experiences our world has to offer.

Travel Photography Tips by Jacqueline Hamilton
Photos and videos are our way of freezing a moment in time, waiting to be enjoyed for years to come. It’s a physical collection of tender moments, sights and adventure. It could be a snap of fascinations we’ve never seen before, the story of a face showing the culture of a community, the spirit of a stunning landscape
and instant flashes that will never come again. A photo is one of the easiest souvenirs we can bring home with us to remind us of the perfect holiday. With that in mind, here are some great travel photography tips to help create that ideal image.
There are many popular photographic websites, forums and communities available online and offline should you wish to chat with professional and nonprofessional photographers about your trip. Speak with your local camera shop operators who may be able to put you in touch with the local camera club. Chat to your friends who have already been to your upcoming destination. You could even check out the postcard stands once you arrive. Usually the best images are on display for you to emulate. Have a Checklist: potential photo locations, best time of day for optimum light, likelihood of weather, any difficulties that may arise getting to/within the locations (opening times, issues with height/traffic/ entry etc)
To Tripod or not to Tripod Selfie-sticks and smaller, grippable tripods are now the norm for most photographers when taking photos. Tripods give you the benefit of being able to set-up a fixed camera position, to take time to set-up the shot, and make adjustments to exposure, focus, shutter speeds, different types of shots with control. Ideal for filming a sunrise or sunset freehand. If you have done your research on the type of shots you are wanting to snap, then you can assess what size of tripod you truly need. The decision to take a larger, more bulky tripod on holiday will rest with you and the amount of weight you can carry/afford, however the assistance of a tripod, large or small, is well worth it.
Research before you go Start your journey with a little research online. Gather some photo ideas of the most popular and iconic locations, vantage points for capturing the soul of a place, ideas and styles of photos. Use Instagram, Google Image Search for a cursory search. Go further indepth at Tourism Board sites or even find specific focus at websites like National Geographic – depending on your preferred photo type.
Always Bring A Camera Always have your camera handy and ready to shoot. It doesn’t need to be your digital SLR with five fabulous lenses, it can be as simple as carrying your smartphone cameras and videos ready to go. Use your pro camera for the pre-planned images, the ones you want to keep, print or sell, and your snap-happy for the other times. It makes for a lot more activity, less weight and, lets be serious, a lot more fun!

Protection
Memory, Batteries and Backups
That said, now a few words about protecting your camera. Theft is rife in the dodgy areas of our world (and the not so dodgy too!), however you would be amiss if you thought packing your camera in your suitcase was completely safe. Make sure to carry your camera and accessories with you onboard your airplane with you. This should protect it from theft and damage to a greater extent. Don’t flash it about in “dodgy” areas, you may find yourself a target. Overall, insure, insure, insure. Travel Insurance is vital, with the added extras clause ticked and serial numbers documented. We would hate for you to have all those lovely shots held in your camera and to have it whipped away from you the day you are coming home.
Nothing worse that a beeping camera to tell you there is no memory left. Oh no, you should have bought that extra memory card and battery out with you today. When you think you are covered, slip an extra battery or memory card in your pocket anyway, believe me it will be required when you least expect it. And I cannot stress enough the importance of backing up. You could use Cloud technology, or you may even want to carry a small hard drive with you to load up. Move your prized images to another device, that way they are secure, you can transfer the images anywhere you need them plus you have all that lovely memory back again. Learn how to improve contrast, sharpen image elements, soften color tones, reduce highlights, boost shadows, minimize sensor noise, and adjust exposure levels (without going overboard) using the software.
Balance Ask yourself, what are your key points and where do you place them within the frame? The Rule of Thirds is one of the most basic understandings when creating a more balanced photocomposition. Essentially split the image into three imaginary areas both horizontally and vertically. These will help to frame the most important parts of your image in a way that is most pleasing to the eye.
By framing your image to give depth by using the “Rule of Thirds”, make sure to have some sort of focus within the horizontal bands. Bottom = foreground (if landscape – it could be a flower, grass); centre horizontal equals your mid-ground (person, fields, river, cows, house etc), and your background is generally the top third (this could be represented by mountains, sky etc). If framing a person, the shoulders would sit in the bottom third, the lips, nose and eyes in mid-field, and the top half of the head above this, leaving at least a third to half of the top of the frame free. Try this for a wider framed shot. Rather than placing your image focus dead centre, try aligning the horizon across the horizontal bottom third of your photo, or when taking a people-shot place them vertically centre-right or vertically centre-left to give a sense of space within the frame, and providing enhancement to the main elements of the image.
LIGHT Soft warm light washing over a landscape will create some amazing images. The perfect time is sunrise and sunset. The early morning light is clean and soft, giving a simple glow to light your pictures. The hour before dawn is especially interesting with dark shadows that brighten as the sun rises. (Plus, there’s the added bonus of fewer tourists about in the early hours!) Similarly, a sunset will provide blushing warm tones on your subject, with a backdrop of multi-coloured opportunities for that perfect shot. Shadows too will deepen as night draws close, opening up prospects for some really moody, emotional images.
Most cameras and videos will have a grid feature, which will display the rule of thirds grid on your viewfinder. Don’t worry, it doesn’t print – the grid just gives you a great guide to focus your shot.
Horizon Lines Keep those horizon lines as straight as possible to make a more pleasing composition. Similarly try to keep vertical lines as aligned as you can – like high rise buildings, in shot trees, cliff faces, and other major elements.
If taking landscapes during the middle of the day, be prepared for quite stark and “flatter” images. With the sun higher you will miss all those lovely shadows that give such expression to a photograph. The brightness during these times are much better suited to close ups and portraits.
You can always edit the image later on for those fancy “off the cuff” slanted horizons.

Experimenting
People
By experimenting with your camera you get to know its abilities you’re your own). Try differently angled shots of the same element. Standing straight on, kneeling, from an elevated height or get right down and shoot upwards from the ground.
Walking up to someone and asking to take their picture can be difficult in Australia, let alone a foreign country. It’s natural to be nervous, after all they are simply living their lives and you are virtually invading their space. Will they say no or get offended? Will they understand you? What if they ask for money?
Different distances will also change your perspective of a composition. Panoramas, wide angled shots are very different from the more mid-range “generic” shots most people take. And then there is the up close and personal framing that will give you a more in-
If you want to take a portrait, especially if they are going to be up close and personal, get to know the person a little first. Basically, touch base and start with “Hello”. Chat a few minutes before asking to take their photo – compliment them on something, buy a souvenir from them, ask directions etc. Once you have a line of
depth look at part of a building or landscape, or the intricacies of a face – just pay attention to where the shadows are and your source of light, it makes all the difference.
communication open, asking to take their picture is a lot less intrusive. You may even make a lifelong friend too!
Use your Rule of Thirds to create a pleasing composition – experiment with this too.
Just remember, not everyone will say yes. Some people will say no. Others will see the opportunity to make some money. Don’t stress if the answer is no, there is always another opportunity around the next corner! And… some people will be just fine with you taking a pic. Plus, it’s always a good idea to learn the phrase for “Can I take your/your child’s photo?”, “Thank you” and “No problem”. It always pays to be polite.
Waiting for the Soul of an Image
What does it look like if you sit the main element to the right, or left? Does it create more interest? Or do you prefer dead centre? Its your personal preference, so go for it. After all, if you are not happy with it, delete and try again. And again, until you get it juuust right.
Photography is about seeing what’s right in front of you. Yet, it’s not just about framing the perfect composition or getting the lighting spot on, although both are important too, your photo should have soul. Use your eyes to see, but atune your emotions, heart and mind to the soul of the image. Before you press the shutter, take time to slow down and feel. Pay attention to your surroundings, community, culture, even the weather. Be prepared to wait out the weather or light (your research will come in handy here), sit ready for a truck or person to move into or out of frame, have an idea in mind as you look for
the face in the crowd that shows the emotion you are trying to capture. Most professional photographers understand they need to have extreme patience and are prepared to wait for that one single moment so they can reap the rewards of a fabulous photo. Take the time, and look for the soul of the image.
Planning and “Off the Cuff” If you have planned your main shots and compositions ahead of time, you will not have to stress about all those “off the cuff” snapshots taken in-the-moment of your fun and exciting holiday experiences. Make your images a priority and set aside some “Photo-time” to take your pre-planned photos within your travel schedule. You may need to get up early or set up times when you will be away from the group or even hire a car and drive yourself. Make sure to tell your guide/tour operator and a friend if you are wandering off and what time you will be back/where you will meet them. Remember to be flexible when traveling with others who may not be so interested in
your perfect shot. After all, if you miss out on a specific photo, it gives you an added excuse to come back to a destination – right? As a budding or experienced photographer, think about improving your photographic knowledge, about increasing your experience, and experimenting with creativity. Every destination is different, every portrait unique, what are you waiting for? Grab your camera and let’s start shooting. Need some ideas for iconic destinations? Pack Light with Style By Jacqueline Hamilton These days you need to consider packing your suitcase seriously. Checked baggage can now be seen as a luxury, and excess baggage charges going through the roof we need to both save on luggage space and think about how much your bag weighs. However, this does not mean your style need suffer, read on to discover how you can pack light and retain a great sense of fashion.

36
Let’s start with the Basics… When packing try to take note of the 70/30 rule. 70% basic mix n match and 30% fashion flair.
Your basics (70%) Tshirts, good casual shirts (that can double as dress-up shirts if needed), jeans and/or trousers, shorts, universal standard skirt, casual sundress, going out dress. Also think about a cardigan or warm coat, depending on climate at your destination. Choose a solid base colour, usually black, navy, greys or browns, and make sure your choices give you at least three different combinations. Eg A pale T-shirt can be paired perfectly with jeans for a day in town, with shorts when hiking and can be teamed with your black universal skirt with a cardi to head out to dinner.
Your Fashion (30%) While you have chosen mainly block colours for your basics, there is nothing like a spicy scarf or bright floral dress to brighten up your suitcase wardrobe. Pair these with a pair of elegant strappy shoes and you’ve nailed some style. Plus, you can go to town with your swimsuits! They are light and breezy, can be vibrant bikini tops and swimshorts with tassles, v-necked and floral, funky geometrics or even monogrammed black spangles with a racerback – anything works for a bit of elegant flair. Before choosing though, think whether or not it will be worn, if it can mix in with your basics (not really essential, because this is the fun part of your wardrobe, however it is helpful if you can pair the bright dress with your cardigan, and dress up or down accordingly).
Your Shoes Remember your basics rule 70/30. No this does not mean you can pack 10 pair of shoes! Try to stick to 3-4 pairs (if possible). Choose a good pair of comfortable walking shoes (sneakers, sketchers, hiking boots). These will stand you in good stead for walking through city, temples and relatively rough hiking trails.
A pair of casual sandals and/or flip flops. Sandals can go from day to night at a pinch. Flip flops for the beach and, inevitably, to wear them in the shower (believe me, if you are sharing or staying in a less than salubrious hotel, you will need to wear them in the shower – shudder!) Dress shoes – choose your base colour or good old black. They will go with everything you have with you.

Colosseum, Rome, Italy
OK, go on, one more pair to match that fashion forward outfit I know you have slipped in there. As long as they don’t take up too much room and don’t weigh too much you are good to go. Oh, speaking of weight, wear your heaviest shoes on your feet while traveling so they do not weigh down your luggage.
Your Accessories Keep your jewellery simple and to a minimum when traveling. You don’t particularly want to stand out too much with flashy, sparkly expensive looking jewels making you a potential theft target. You are not on show at your destination, nobody knows you, so stay safe and simple.
Again, mix and match with your outfits. Plain studs, a chain and pendant, bracelet or plain rings work well to dress up any outfit. OK it’s not what you would wear at home, however it will work for most of your holiday occasions. Now that we have the basics covered, lets think a little flash and sparkle for going out. Nothing over the top, just a little something, something. Silver bangles, handicrafts you bought in the local market as a souvenir,
Your Destination Your destination will really dictate what you need to bring with you. If it’s cool, then think layers – what can you layer together so that you are warm, comfortable and stylish. And don’t forget a warm coat, socks (always good in a vibrant colour to lift the spirits), scarf, wooly beanie and gloves.
charm bracelet or anklets, or that one bright piece that you cannot do without. Can I just say that not all accessories are jewellery. Think stylish sunglasses, lightweight hats and light, bright shawls and scarves that can easily double as a headband, headscarf, tieback for the hair, modesty covering, beach bag, beach coverall, towel, sarong, accent to a little black dress and the list goes on. Choose one handbag to carry out and about with you, and a little evening bag for those special nights out. Each accessory has its own unique style, and brightens up an outfit with the minimal weight to your suitcase.
If it’s warm then it’s the 70/30 mix n match rule. What can you wear with what. Or throw caution to the wind a buy everything when you arrive! And if you need modest or specific clothing or gear, eg visiting a more conservative country may need longer sleeves and coverings, mountain climbing may need ski-jackets and warmer clothing, trekking – boots & waterproofs, scubadiving – fins & goggles, then you will need to account for it in your suitcase weight. Hopefully now you have a better idea of the types of clothing to pack lightly, and ideas to snazz your fashion flair while on holidays. Time to fly? Or cruise or travel? Accor Vacation Club was honoured to take home four major awards, as voted by an independent judging panel representing the Australian Timeshare Hotel Ownership Council. Craig Wood, CEO for Accor Vacation Club said, “I continue to be proud of the effort, initiative and commitment of our entire team working across the network, however it is also wonderful to receive formal recognition from the industry and our peers on an occasion such as this. “I would like to congratulate our many finalists, and the four category winners, for representing Accor Vacation Club so well and for being leaders in their field. Good to Know!
Convert your Première Points with AVC Travel. Don’t know what to do with your expiring points? Unable to check in to a Club property before they expire? Talk to us about exploring the Accor Hotels Select properties or converting your Première Points to Discovery Dollars. Use Discovery Dollars to reduce the cash component of hotels, cruises and packages booked through Accor Vacation Club Travel.
Top tips to keep in mind, courtesy of our Members Services team.
Coming clean on credits.
Have you taken advantage of the new GAP booking window? We have listened to the feedback, provided through the 2016 Members Survey, at Members Workshops and over the phone. Changes have been made that deliver greater flexibility and provide more opportunities to make online reservations. Enter – GAP Bookings. Once the 7 night reservation booking windows for all levels of membership have opened, 10 months prior to check in, reservations shorter than 7 nights can be made when there is no availability either side of the shorter duration block using the new GAP booking window. Conditions apply, so contact Members Services for more on how to use this new Booking Window. Ensure an always-happy anniversary! We’ve all been guilty of forgetting about those important anniversaries. We want to help you make sure that never happens when it comes to your Accor Vacation Club Première Points. Your Accor Vacation Club membership anniversary and expiry dates remain the same every year and never change. Therefore, to keep those important dates top of mind, we recommend setting a reminder and planning ahead. Whether you prefer an old-school wall calendar or digital calendar alarm is up to you – just write them down and lock them in! That will help ensure that you never have to worry about having any unused points expire. Remember, when you check in, your points check out. Points for Club property reservations are deducted on the actual day of check in – not when you make the reservation. Première Points used for Accor Hotels Select reservations are deducted on the day of reservation allowing you to check in up to 90 days later.
Running out of cleaning credits should never deter you from making a new holiday reservation with Accor Vacation Club. If you want to book a stay, but do not have enough cleaning credits available, you can purchase more at the time of making the Club property reservation. Alternatively, Members can choose to book an Accor Hotels Select property, which does not require you to use a clean credit at all. Stay in touch. Not receiving all the latest news from the Club by email? If you think you might be missing important updates, please don’t hesitate to call. Your Members Services team can check that we have your current email details, and ensure that you are subscribed to receive all of our important news. Telephone Workshops. We love nothing more than bringing Members up to speed on all the membership benefits they are entitled to, and helping use each and every point! Make sure you call Members Services to arrange an annual workshop, to help stay on top of the many benefits and maximise your Membership to it’s full capacity. Our mission is to ensure you can fit in as many holidays and experiences with Accor Vacation Club as possible to create holiday memories that matter.

Vacation Exchange WINNING STRATEGY
Good things come to those who plan ahead. Follow these simple tips and get the Interval International vacation exchange of your dreams!
Accor members use the Request First method. If your desired exchange is not immediately available to confirm, then simply place a request and keep your Accor club points until Interval confirms that you have enough to make the exchange that you have chosen. Once you have a confirmed exchange, you will relinquish your Accor club points to Interval, and you can pack your bags! If you have points expiring soon with Accor Vacation Club, then transfer those points to Interval before they expire so that you get two extra years to use the points towards an Interval exchange. Placing a Request: n
Select destinations and/or resorts, as well as the time of year you’re looking to travel.
n
And to further enhance your exchange opportunities, request the smallest sized unit that will accommodate the number of people in your travelling party.
n
When you’re done, you can get on with your routine because here’s the best part: Interval will do the searching for you. When we find a vacation exchange that fits your request, we’ll let you know it’s time to start packing. It couldn’t be easier!
Place a request today at intervalworld.com!
