FROM THE
CEO Dear Members,
It’s hard to believe we are already halfway through 2017, but I’m sure you will be happy to read in this edition what your Accor Vacation Club team has been doing this year to improve your Membership experience. We have almost completed the Club’s property refurbishment cycle, having this year finished a total makeover of our apartments at Novotel Pacific Bay Resort in Coffs Harbour and ‘soft’ refurbishments of the Accor Vacation Club apartments at Turtle Beach Resort-Gold Coast and Oakridge Resort in Wanaka, New Zealand. Thanks to all of you who have provided us such wonderful comments on the refurbishment team’s achievements. We have already started work at The Sebel Melbourne Flinders Lane and are about to start work at Links Lady Bay in South Australia, with The Sebel Sydney Manly Beach and The Sebel Darling Harbour The Pinnacle hoped to be completed before year end. We continue to receive great feedback on the hotel review site TripAdvisor, with a number of our hotels and resorts holding the number one ranking in their categories. I am very grateful to you all for your support in providing comments and can assure you that this feedback is read daily by the teams and your positive comments make their day. Mine, too! We have also seen substantial growth in our Facebook page following, so thanks again to all of you who not only follow our site but also take the time to post comments and photos of your experiences on your travels. I am pleased to announce a new addition to the Accor Vacation Club leadership team. We have recently appointed Phil Reid as our General Manager of Hotel Operations and we have a feature article on him in this edition. Phil is an Accor veteran having spent 18 years with the group in a number of positions in Europe and South East Asia. We are very glad to have him join Accor Vacation Club and look forward to working with him to continue improving our already impressive hotel service levels. We celebrate a few major milestones this year. Our Member Event and Workshop program recorded its 10,000th guest since its inception. We have a busy program scheduled for the remainder of this year so if you haven’t already attended a workshop, watch for one coming to a venue near you. If you have already been to one, consider attending again because the Club continues to evolve in leaps and bounds and there is always something new to learn.
Another major milestone we are sure to see this year is in the success of our Accor Hotels Select program, which we envisage will soon record its 50,000th room night since the program began. It is so good to see the number and variety of new destinations being added, most recently Ibis Styles Hobart, offering a much wanted location in Tasmania. We also have seen this year, the immediate success of the Accor Hotels Select Asia and Elite tiered programs giving those with higher levels of Club Membership more opportunities to use their points. This has added more than 55 locations to our ever expanding network. Accor Vacation Club continues to grow and this year we have added further inventory to The Sebel Sydney Manly Beach to meet increasing demand for this wonderful property. We also continue to be on constant lookout for new properties to enhance your Membership experience. We hope to make an exciting announcement about a new location for the Club coming later this year. Watch this space! If you are not yet subscribed to our news update email distribution list and would like to be, please contact your friendly Member Services team to ensure you receive Club updates, including last minute availability and hotel refurbishment information. We work in a demanding industry that’s not without its challenges, and on a personal note I want to extend my grateful thanks to all our Members who provide me with such outstanding feedback and support. I do hope you enjoy this edition of your Vacations magazine and that it inspires you to take some fantastic breaks. Happy Holidays

Four Sights of South America
vacations edition two • 2017
14
Must see South America holds many once-ina-lifetime destinations for the ultimate bucket list. We have selected four of our favourite MUST SEE sights and regions. They include the spectacular Machu Picchu, the uniquely interesting Galapagos
HERE ARE OUR TOP PICKS FIRST UP IS… MACHU PICCHU – PERU The archaeological heritage of the Inca and Aztecs are on par with any ancient civilisation, and have been recognised by UNESCO World Heritage. The cities of Lima and the capital of the Inca Empire Cusco, Sacred Valley, the mystery of the Nasca Lines, and the ultimate goal of many travellers – the lost city of the Inca’s, Machu Picchu.
Islands, the majestic Iguazú Falls and the much under-rated region of Patagonia. Although seemingly remote, these locations are easily accessible as you cruise along the coastlines of Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru and beyond. You can thoroughly experience the heart and soul of South America through her unique UNESCO World Heritage-listed sites, natural wonders and vibrant, unique cities. Now is the time to be captivated by raw beauty, untouched environments and unique cultures.
Imagine watching the sun rise, surrounded by the snow-covered peaks of the Andes Mountains, gazing out over the “Lost City of the Inca’s” – Machu Picchu. Almost 13 hectares of granite carved blocks, precisely fitted to create palaces, houses, sun-worship temples and more. Mysteriously abandoned only 100 years after construction, this unique landmark attracts over 2000 tourists each day for that once-in-a-lifetime experience. Visiting this region can easily be achieved by ship, with many cruise itineraries allowing ample time to sightsee - most staying 1-2 days in port (check your itinerary with your consultant to be sure). For example, Princess Cruises offers a 3
day overland excursion taking in Cusco, Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu during their 17 day Andes & South America cruise onboard Emerald Princess in December 2017.
NEXT UP ARE… THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS – ECUADOR Sitting astride the Equator off the coast of Ecuador is the archipelago of the Galapagos Islands. As a natural haven for many uniquely diverse animals and native vegetation, this twice-listed World Heritage area is inspiration for many, not least the famous scientist Charles Darwin. A photographers paradise, each island environment ranges from volcanic rocks to cactus laden desert, carob trees, guava and passionflower through to pristine white sand beaches and sapphire blue sparkling waters. Reptiles dominate the tiny islands, from colourful land and marine iguanas, snakes, lizards and the famous, ageold giant tortoises. The sea and shores are home to vibrantly coloured crabs, “chocolate-chip” starfish, iridescent parrotfish, hammerhead sharks, whales, dolphins and sealions, too many to count. vacations edition two • 2017

Iguazu Falls, Brazil
Discover a multitude of bird life, from Darwin’s finches to the more exotic Blue Footed Booby and red breast of the Magnificent Frigate Bird. It’s home to the world’s only equatorial penguins, as well as flocks of flamingo, grebe, ducks, falcons, hawks, ospreys and kingfishers - some of which are only found here in the Galapagos. As a great place to spot the rare and unusual, we made sure to add the Galapagos Islands to our South America MUST SEEs discover and explore destinations.
THEN THERE IS… IGUAZÚ FALLS – BRAZIL & ARGENTINA Iguazú Falls are located within a seemingly untouched lush, sub-tropical rainforest and national park jampacked full of interesting and unique flora and fauna. And as a haven for more than 2,000 plant species, over 350 bird species, more than 80 types of mammals and countless insects and invertebrates – we have another naturelovers dream destination. Set on the border between Argentina and Brazil, the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Iguazú Falls is certainly a sight to behold. This wonder of nature spans 2.7 kilometres with over 275 breathtaking, thundering waterfalls plunging up to 82metres headlong into rocks below. And, at nearly twice the size of Niagara Falls, and wider than Victoria Falls, the Iguazú Falls holds the record for the world’s largest waterfalls system. vacations edition two • 2017
16
This whole region is easily accessed from Buenos Aires, an amazing city itself to tango through. Cruise lines such as Holland America Line, Silversea, MSC and Princess Cruises among others, all offer excursions for this bucket list adventure. Iguazú Falls is a true testament to the immense natural power of water – just one thing to remember… you will get wet!
AND FINALLY… PATAGONIA – ARGENTINA & CHILE Every traveller yearns for a re-energising and newfound love of travel, and Patagonia is just the thing to provide that inspiration. First, be welcomed into an historic Gaucho culture, with it’s fascinating music, cuisine, clothing, customs
and nomadic lifestyle. Discover the nobility and characteristics of an Argentine cattle ranching tradition that has been around since colonization by Spain and Portugal in the 16th century! Take time out to explore Patagonia’s fascinating rugged land and seascapes, starting in Argentina and Chile, sweeping south into the fragile, ice-laden southern tip of the Southern American continent. Few think of her wild, breathtaking scenery when they imagine the southern regions of South America. Yet you can explore such diverse contrasts of nature, from fjords and glaciers, to petrified forests and desert steppes, the dormant tranquility of snow-capped volcanoes and so much more - there is really no other place like it on earth. Patagonia and the remote southern tip is very popular those looking for expedition cruising and perfect for any once-in-alifetime adventure. Lindblad National Geographic Cruises, Celebrity Cruises and Scenic Cruises could all get you up close and personal with the grandeur and sheer inspiration of this intriguing region. Ultimately, South America’s history, natural beauty and culture is ripe for discovery. There are many cruises designed to maximise visits to these once‑in-a-lifetime destinations. Whether you want to cruise in complete luxury or more simply, there is an itinerary to suit everyone. It’s time to add South America to your bucket list and give Accor Vacation Club Cruises a call today.

of Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Fiji. Yet there is so much more to cruising, different cruiselines, larger and smaller ships, budget holidays through to luxury once-in-a-lifetime cruises, oceans versus rivers, and the number of world destinations open to you are as limitless as your imagination. So… where to next?
So, you’ve cruised to the South Pacific onboard one of the many ships now gracing Australia’s shores and you are wondering, where to now? Many Australians and New Zealanders take their first cruise to the South Pacific every year. It’s one of our most popular cruises, and many cruisers repeat the journey time and again to the lovely islands vacations edition two • 2017
18
For those who prefer to stay closer to home, you could embark on a circumnavigation cruise of Australia. Or the Land of The Long White Cloud. Or both! And depending on how much time you have available, what about a shorter segment of each cruise, say Brisbane to Perth, or the south island of New Zealand? It could just be your cup of tea! Do you like getting up close and personal with the Australian outback? Then a Murray River Cruise would be the ideal way to go. A few days cruising the majestic Murray, time to take in an historic paddle-wheeler, discovering pioneering Australia while experiencing our unique Australian flora and fauna and Dreamtime culture – simply beautiful, and right in our own backyard!
Done That... Or, let’s really get into that cruising culture with a longer cruise, readily available from most major ports. Transpacific cruises sailing from Sydney or Brisbane across the Pacific Ocean via Tahiti, Bora Bora and Hawaii (arguably the most beautiful places on earth), all the way to San Francisco, Vancouver or LA. From there you can sail up to Alaska, around the coastline of USA and Mexico… even through the Panama Canal and up into the Caribbean Islands!
Or start cruising from the other way… we are talking west from Perth, out across the Indian Ocean visiting the stunning Maldives, exotic Asia and India, Dubai, the coastline of Africa and beyond. And that’s cruising from our own Australian shores in a nutshell.
Plus, if you are not adverse to flying first, a whole world of cruise ports are wide open to you! I’m talking the whole shebang - ocean cruising or river cruising. From the rivers in Europe’s heartland to the blue of the Mediterranean Sea to Alaska’s sparkling coastline and Asia’s majestic Mekong River. Get out your explorer hat for an indepth adventure to South America, the Galapagos Islands, or the ultimate cruising adventure – Antarctica, the last frontier – sailing in absolute luxury of course… it’s the only way to cruise!
The South Pacific is right here on our doorstop, great for a first and second cruising experience or a few relaxing days away… and yet… as we have just seen, there are so many cruising options open to you. Call Accor Vacation Club Cruises for your next cruising adventure and have a chat with a cruise consultant for their insightful (and well informed) suggestions. Enjoy your Cruise Without Breaking the Budget! A cruise has much to make it the perfect holiday experience with all of your onboard accommodation, dining, entertainment and more included. Sometimes though, those little extras and incidentals can mount up - a deluxe coffee at breakfast, a massage or two in the luxury spa, dining at a speciality restaurant, extra drinks, bingo, the casino... SO, here are some tips to help you enjoy your cruising experience to the max without breaking the budget. • Consider paying a little extra right upfront for your cruising holiday and include any airfares or incidentals, so it’s all paid beforehand. • Some cruise lines will include gratuities prior to sailing, others include them once on board. If gratuities are not included, ask what the policy is BEFORE you sail so you can budget for this. (Gratuities are there to help appreciate those who have made your holiday memorable). • Decide BEFORE you sail if a massage, facial treatment or other Spa services are an essential while on holiday. If so, include the little luxuries into your cruise budget. • Add a beverage package to your cruise to keep the costs down on incidentals. Take note - some river cruises have ALL meals, beverages and on‑shore excursions already included! • Plan your own excursions. The downside of this of course is that you MUST make sure you get back to the dock in time so you could be left behind! Sometimes its best to go with a cruise lines excursions as the best of the destination is highlighted, and if the tour is delayed, the ship will wait. • Arrive early to your embarkation city and do some extra sightseeing before your cruise. • Although its a nice to have a professional photograph taken while on board, it is an expense. Use your own camera to snap memories of a lifetime and save. • Internet onboard can sometimes be unreliable, slower and the costs may mount up. If you absolutely have to be online during your cruise holiday, use shore days to stay connected – there’s usually an onshore café or McD’s with connectivity somewhere. • If you feel the need to brave the passengers onboard laundry to wash clothes go right ahead. My personal opinion is that I am on holiday and it’s my time for a break from washing up, tidying up, laundry and cooking. The extra is well worth it - believe me. The biggest tip I can offer is to keep track of your purchases, don’t go overboard, and make sure to factor in a few little luxuries along the way after all you are on holiday! Happy sailing - Jackie H

Pullman Melbourne On The Park Melbourne was the location for the April Member Event and what a night it was.
On April 22nd we were back in Melbourne for our Members Workshop and Evening Event. It was wonderful to see some familiar faces and also so many Members that had not been to a workshop before including some who are brand new to the Club. Both workshop sessions were well attended. Tailoring the sessions into membership levels was something we started this year after gaining feedback from Members attending previous workshops. The Q&A sessions at the end of each workshop continue to be well attended with members learning from each others important questions.

BELOW ARE SOME OF OUR PICKS, WHEN CHOOSING WHAT TO DO ON YOUR WA GETAWAY... Busselton Jetty Considered one of the longest wooden jettys in the world it stretches nearly 2 kms out into the shallow waters of Geographe Bay from the town of Busselton. The long jetty was required to transport the cut timber to the awaiting ships that had restricted access into the bay. Today, the jetty attracts visitors from around the world who take in the uninterrupted views of the bay. Discover what lies below in the Underwater Observatory. If walking is to much, take a ride on the Jetty Train. Everything you would need for the day can be bought or hired at the Interpretive Centre including souvenirs, or book a Guided Walk Tour to learn about the rich history of the jetty and its surrounds.

SOFT REFURBISHMENT
Turtle Beach Resort ACCOR VACATION CLUB APARTMENTS
This property provided many sources of inspiration from the location right opposite the beach on the sunny Gold Coast, to the fun filled activities available to the guests in the number of new waterpark facilities in the center of the grounds.
Bright colours and fun accent pieces have been used to enhance the experience of staying at such a family friendly location, and the accessories have been selected to inspire guests to take advantage of the world famous beaches. The name of the property “Turtle Beach” also allowed for us to introduce a local award winning photographer who specialises in sea life images, through the art that has been printed on metallic paper. This effect allows the image to showcase the true and natural beauty of our local Queensland sea life while co ordinating to the fun and vibrant colours incorporated into the family friendly apartments.

SOFT REFURBISHMENT
Oakridge Resort
ACCOR VACATION CLUB APARTMENTS Nestled into the outskirts of a quaint little village named Wanaka is the fabulous Oakridge Resort. The soft refurbishment of the Club rooms was inspired by the rustic natural beauty that surrounded this slightly remote location on the stunning South Island of New Zealand. stone provided the colour palette. Highly textured fabrics, wall papers, rugs and artifacts were specified to establish ambiance and authenticity which in turn invokes an emotional attachment to the comfortable Resort fit out. “On trend” black metal frames were combined with vintage, solid timber in furnishings. Also included were trimmed throw rugs, that are irresistible on a cold winters night by the fireplace. It just feels like home! When embarking upon this refurbishment, staying true to the original architects intent by complementing and enhancing the design opposed to fighting it was favoured. There were some great external architectural details, particularly around the pool and public areas which caught our attention. The concept theme developed for the new interiors was then driven by those architectural details along with the immediate landscape’s flora and fauna. The general look and feel is contemporary by design and yet slightly eclectic with a touch of old school familiarity. Lake Wanaka, the warmth of the yellow sun, the blue skies, the snow-capped mountains and the Otago Schist
