Once purchased, your ticket is your property. The Market Place Theatre cannot refund its value to you, nor exchange it for any other ticket under any circumstances. If you cannot attend the performance for any reason, you have the option of selling or giving your ticket to another person.

JIGJAZZ H

Very loosely based on the Anti-Jazz Movement of the 1930’s ‘JigJazz: The Show’ tells the story of four female jazz musicians: Sandra Mitchell (based on Sandra Mitchell, Ireland’s first female Saxophonist), and Irish Jazz singers Rosie Bagnal, Ottie Benson and Ronnie Fitzgerald, who were trying to survive during an era when “jazzing the soul of the nation” was immoral and illicit.

Jazz was seen as a “degenerate” art and women in Irish society at the time were particularly frowned upon for dancing, singing or playing anything other than traditional Irish music. Hence, The Dance Hall Act in 1935 was passed due to the moral panic about jazz undermining traditional Irish culture.

Driven to practice their passion elsewhere, many Irish musicians travelled to America during the 1940s settling into the home of All that Jazz!

Blending sounds and rhythms using similar instruments such as the bodhrán, piano and violin - the jig and the jazz collaborated throughout the coming decades. Meanwhile the dancers tapped in time to the spirit of tradition and modernity.

Lorelei Lee [Marilyn Monroe] is a beautiful showgirl engaged to be married to the wealthy Gus Esmond [Tommy Noonan], much to the disapproval of Gus’ rich father, Esmond Sr., who thinks that Lorelei is just after his money. When Lorelei goes on a cruise accompanied only by her best friend, Dorothy Shaw [Jane Russell], Esmond Sr. hires Ernie Malone [Elliott Reid], a private detective, to follow her and report any questionable behaviour that would disqualify her from the marriage. Marty the zebra is celebrating his 10th birthday at Central Park Zoo with his friends Alex the lion, Gloria the hippo, and Melman the giraffe. However, Marty longs to experience life away from the zoo. He escapes and his friends leave to find him, but all are captured by police. They wake up on a boat but get shipwrecked on the island of Madagascar. Now, they’ve got to find their way home.

Madagascar Jr is a fabulous show performed by DFK’s talented and vibrant young performers aged 5 to 17, who all live locally and can’t wait to bring this incredible story to life. You won’t be disappointed.

That was until a tragic accident put a stop to his track-racing days. Driven to desperate measures in order to provide for his son, he agrees to become a get-away driver for the local baddies.

Join Heartbreak Productions for this warm-hearted tale that follows the highs and lows of a father-son relationship. An open-air adaptation of David Walliams’ ‘Bad Dad’ is the perfect summer family entertainment. So, pack your picnics, grab your wet weather gear or sun-cream [or both], something to sit on, and join Frank and Gilbert as they navigate their way through car chases and convicts in the struggle to escape the clutches of the local crime lord and clear Gilbert’s name.

By now an annual highlight of JHISS, multi award-winning Armagh writer, Stuart Neville, invites two of the most popular and critically acclaimed crime writers to join him for this Crime Fiction Special.

USA-based Lee Child, one of the world’s leading thriller writers, is the creator of the iconic Jack Reacher series, a global phenomenon. His books consistently achieve the number one slot on bestseller lists around the world and have sold over one hundred million copies. He is soon to retire after an extraordinary writing career, but his brother, Andrew Child, a highly successful thriller author in his own right, has taken on the daunting task of continuing the Jack Reacher series. Lee and Andrew have collaborated on three to date and the most recent, No Plan B, has been described by Karin Slaughter as “perfectly plotted … with bigger twists than ever before”.

JACK WARNOCK IN CONCERT

Jack Warnock is a multi-instrumentalist and singer who has performed as a soloist, accompanist and in groups at events, festivals, and venues across the world. In recent years Jack has been nominated for the prestigious BBC Young Folk Award, won the Senior Accompaniment Competition at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, and received the ‘Young Musician’s Platform’ award from ACNI and BBC NI.

A musician in serious demand, Jack’s output is testament to his talent and tenacity. His recently released debut album, ‘Le Solas Faoithine’ [By Dusklight], featuring songs in English and Irish, is a masterwork of thought, consideration and beautiful curation and can comfortably sit alongside any traditional Irish debut release of recent times. For this performance, Jack will be joined by Eleanor Gaffney on fiddle and concertina.

The story of Danielle is of tears and laughter, of golden moments in a day-long struggle, of rolling with the punches and coming through a winner.

Cathy Carson is a writer and spoken word artist who combines poetry and storytelling and is known for her powerful, emotive, engaging and deeply affecting performances. Her work focuses on the human connection and condition. She has written and performed for festivals, theatre, television and radio podcasts. In 2022 she was shortlisted for the Saboteur award for Best Spoken Word Performer.

The story begins in Belfast in the 1970’s, where life at home is as dangerous for young Danielle as it is on the streets. She feels like she is drowning, but there are lifeboats around her, people who will save her. If only she could trust them enough to take their hands.

King tells the story of Luther, a man from Cork named in honour of his Granny Bee Baw’s hero, Dr Martin Luther King Jr. Luther only leaves his apartment for essential journeys, and to perform as an Elvis impersonator. The play explores prejudice, privilege, and isolation, as Luther struggles to live life to the full.

Fishamble and Pat Kinevane have previously collaborated on five awardwinning solo plays, two of which, ‘Silent’ and ‘Before’, have played to great acclaim to JHISS audiences at The Market Place Theatre. His performances have won major international awards including Olivier, Herald Archangel, and Adelaide Fringe. They have been called ‘brilliant’ [Irish Times], ‘extraordinary’ [New York Times] and ‘mesmerising’ [Sydney Morning Herald]. Now, Fishamble and Pat Kinevane, under the direction of Jim Culleton, and with music by Denis Clohessy, return with this very special fifth solo play.

Muriel and Herbie Glover and their daughter Susan enjoy life in the domestic setting of a wee terraced house somewhere in Belfast. Their neighbour, Lily Dodds, calls in quite frequently for the loan of a wee cup of sugar or a wee drop of tea to keep her going. Herbie keeps pigeons in his loft in the back yard and has collected quite a few cups from racing his birds across the continent. All is bliss, except for the lady next door, who insists on putting out her washing just as the pigeons are returning from their exploits.

When Muriel and Lily learn that they share a sweepstake that has drawn the favourite in an impending horse race and are likely to win a considerable sum of money, Muriel’s mother, who lives in Cherry Valley, descends on the household with the threat that life will never be the same again for the hapless Herbie.

Blending the customary pot-pourri of Cree characters, the play races along to the inevitable conclusion but not before audiences are treated to a hilarious evening of comedy and mayhem that are the hallmarks of Sam Cree’s writing.

DAVID LYTTLE PRESENTS JAZZLIFE

MOBO nominated drummer and composer David Lyttle started out in the band of Irish guitarist Louis Stewart, and has gone on to bring his projects to almost forty countries, including recent tours to North Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. He has worked with jazz icons from Joe Lovano to Dave Liebman to Kurt Rosenwinkel and collaborated in hip hop with Talib Kweli and spoken word with Liam Neeson. He has carried out a number of ambitious artist residencies, including a US coast-to-coast road trip performing for subcultures ranging from bikers in California to UFO tourists near Area 51.

Closer to home, David is the artistic director of Jazzlife Alliance, an Arts Council of Northern Ireland funded talent organisation which mentors gifted young musicians and launched the innovative Jazz Juniors scheme for under 18s in 2021. His return to The Market Place will see him perform alongside many of these up-and-coming young talents.

IMPORTANT NOTES FOR ADULT AND CHILDREN’S WORKSHOPS

Enrolment closes seven days prior to workshop date. Summer season adult workshops are suitable for ages 16+. Workshops are designed for people coming to a subject for the first time or for those with a casual or leisure interest. Workshops are suitable for wheelchair users.

There are no catering services available at The Market Place Theatre. Participants should bring their own lunch or avail of the many cafés, restaurants and shops close to the venue. Fanatical about felines? Love art? Look no FURRther, this is the PURRfect workshop for you! We will look at many different cool cats in art. We will create colourful kittens in three different styles, using different techniques and materials. There will be some collage work, some illustration, some drawing and a lot of creativity. We will take inspiration from both art history and modern artists, looking at artists such as Mary Blair, Laurel Birch, Utagawa Kuniyoshi & Louis Wain. So come get your meow on! Join Romaine Hodgen from Flowerworks to create a beautiful hatbox design in a ‘just picked style’ evoking all the feels of a summer garden using a mix of seasonal flowers and foliage. All materials and accessories will be provided from the best of the summer season. No previous floristry experience is necessary, as Romaine will take you through each step from start to finish. This is a great way to enjoy the creativity of flower arranging in a relaxed setting with expert guidance

TEXTILE PRINTMAKING

During this half day course you will create your very own screen-printed design on textile by creating a hand crafted and cut stencil/template of your design with a choice of coloured inks. This workshop is suitable for beginners or those interested in the process of screen printing and layering work. Artist Zippy will discuss the principles of screen printing and demonstrate step-by-step how to use the materials to get the best finish on your textile. At the end of the workshop you will have a unique piece of artwork to frame or for use in interior design such as a cushion.

LIGHT ON THE LANDSCAPE: FUSED GLASS

Join artist, Tracey McVerry, to create your own bespoke candle holder using the medium of fused glass. In response to the exhibition ‘Whispers at Dawn, Dancing at Dusk’ you will create your own fused glass candle holder inspired by a landscape that resonates with you.

During the workshop, Tracey will give you a short tour of her exhibition and explain how the South Armagh landscape has heavily inspired her work. You will then move into the studio space to recreate your own chosen landscape in glass. You will learn techniques in design layout, glass cutting, and assembly of cold glass using coloured sheet, stringers and frit.

Your work will be transported back to Tracey’s studio to be fired and mounted into a handmade wooden base. The work will be delivered back to the Market Place for collection a week later.

Participants are encouraged to bring a photo of a landscape that they have a connection with.

ALONG THE LOANINFELT WORKSHOP

Join artist Caóilíonn Murphy O’Hanlon on a guided talk through her new exhibition followed by a wet felt making workshop in response to the images and words from ‘Along the Loanin’. You will be producing a wool painting inspired by the exhibition and drawing on a sense of place using a blend of fibres, wools and silks. Caóilíonn will demonstrate nuno felting techniques, embroidery stitches and knot thread work for embellishing your landscape further.

All felting materials are provided but participants should bring two medium sized towels, small basin, basic sewing kit, small sketchbook, scissors and lots of imagination for this day long workshop.

On this two-day basket-making course with professional willow weaver Sabine Wolnizcak, you will learn to weave a very attractive basket used for foraging. Its unusual shape is both contemporary and traditional involving the staples of solid basket-making techniques. For its creation, you will use organic and locally grown willow varieties and hazel wood for the handle which are all supplied by the tutor.

There will be some painting, sculpting and action painting. There will be textiles, mobiles and even a top secret, one-of-a-kind

installation using yourself as part of the piece! Let’s not forget about all the new friendships that will be made throughout the week too! The camp ends with an exhibition showcasing all the artwork made during the week.

NESSA O’MAHONY Nessa is a Dublin-born poet who has published five books of poetry, most recently ‘The Hollow Woman on the Island’ [2019]. She was guest editor of Poetry Ireland Review issue 138, a tribute to Eavan Boland.

PAUL McVEIGH Paul has had short stories published in numerous anthologies, journals and newspapers. His ten-part short story series for Radio 4, ‘The Circus’, aired early 2023 and his writing has been translated into seven languages.

MAUREEN BOYLE Maureen is winner of the Fish Short Memoir Prize, and has published two poetry collections, ‘The Last Spring of the World’ [2022], and ‘The Work of a Winter’ [2021] which was shortlisted for the Strong Shine Poetry Prize.

SIOBHÁN CAMPBELL Siobhan has published widely in Ireland, UK and USA. Awarded the Listowel Irish Poem of the Year award in 2021 and the Templar Poetry Prize, Siobhán is the author of six collections of poetry, most recently ‘Heat Signature’.

HEATHER RICHARDSON Heather has published two novels, ‘Magdeburg’ [Lagan Press, 2010], and ‘Doubting Thomas’ [Vagabond Voices, 2017]. Her next book, ‘A Dress for Kathleen’, a volume of creative non-fiction, will be published in the autumn.

SILVER SMITHING: SILVER STACKING RINGS WITH SEMI-PRECIOUS STONES

Spend a day under the guidance of goldsmith Diane Lyness as you make a pair of silver stacking rings. Each participant will be taught traditional jewellery making techniques such as piercing, soldering, shaping, texturing and polishing to create a beautiful pair of rings to take home. Personalise and add colour to your ring by adding one or two semi-precious stones. No previous experience is required. All you need to bring is an apron and bundles of enthusiasm!

WOODTURNING: 2-DAY INTERMEDIATE IMPROVERS COURSE

Wed 9 & Thurs 10 Aug | 10.00am - 4.00pm | £80.00

This two-day course with experienced tutor Jim Kelly is suitable for those who have attended a Beginner’s Course or who have some experience of woodturning. During the two days, the emphasis will be on accuracy and fitting of components together. Two to three projects will be completed over the two days. Participants who have attended the intermediate class previously will have an opportunity to work on new projects to further enhance their skills.

Each participant will have the use of a lathe and safety equipment will be provided. Tools will be available, but participants are encouraged to bring their own tools. A ProEdge sharpening system will be available throughout the two days. All materials, finishes and a bench grinder will be provided, however, participants should bring an overall/apron/old shirt to protect their clothes.

This workshop can host one wheelchair user or those who need to be seated. Please inform the box office at the time of booking if you require this facility.

FUSED GLASS SUMMER LANDSCAPE

Join expert glass artist Keith Sheppard for this colourful fused glass workshop to create a beautiful 24cm x 20cm freestanding curved glass landscape or two flat 24cm x 10cm glass landscapes. The freestanding piece will look stunning set close to a window or in the evenings will glow beautifully with a small candle set behind it. The two flat glass landscapes can be set in one or two mounted box frames and hung as a decorative artwork on the wall.

Working with different coloured glass Keith will teach you various design techniques; demonstrate the tools required for glass cutting and how to work safely and handle glass with confidence. Your completed fused glass landscapes will be taken back to Keith’s studio for firing and returned to the venue one to two weeks later for collection.

All tools and materials will be provided. You may wish to bring your own safety glasses. Please wear suitable clothing and flat shoes. PLEASE NOTE: Completed glass decorations will not be returned by post. Collection only from the venue.

SPRAY PAINTING ON CANVAS WORKSHOP

Artist Zippy will introduce you to the art of using spray paint as a medium to create your own piece of art on canvas. You will learn the process of designing, cutting and layering your stencils to build your design. Zippy will demonstrate spray-painting techniques to ensure that your artwork has a professional quality finish. At the end of this workshop you will take home a unique

multi-coloured contemporary artwork that will look fantastic on any interior wall.

This workshop is for beginners or those interested in the art of spray painting or mural artwork. Ideal for students studying GCSE, AS or A Level Art, Design, Technology to build their course work content.

Zippy is an experienced local Mural artist working within the medium of spray paint for several years.

Award-winning designer and lace maker Theresa Kelly is delighted to present this new lace workshop based around the clematis flower ‘The President’. During this three-day workshop you will be covering most of the traditional Carrickmacross Lace techniques of couching, guipure, loops etc. Theresa will guide you through the making of this original flower design. Suitable for beginner and intermediate lace makers.

All materials are provided however attendees are encouraged to bring a small lamp to shine on their work for increased visibility.

Dating back many thousands of years, Chinese calligraphy and brush painting is one of the oldest continuous artistic traditions in the world. Chinese painters use a traditional brush dipped into black ink, or colour on special paper or silk. Subjects include flowers, plants, birds, animals, mountains and rivers. The painter aims to capture the life and spirit of the subject, making it live through the brush of the painter and the eyes of the viewer. In this relaxing introductory workshop, we will explore Chinese culture through calligraphy and brush painting to complete a range of test works leading up to a finished piece including an image and calligraphy.

They lived, they loved, they endured and left their mark. We now are the legacy, the storytellers and custodians of their memory. Using the medium of kiln-formed glass as well as repurposed natural and man-made objects, South Armagh artist Tracey McVerry celebrates this deeply felt, multi-layered connection with her ancient and recent ancestors, visually honouring their frugality, their energy, their strength and their whispered echoes.

A nostalgic celebration of a small slice of mountain where she dwells, a homage to a shared belonging to a place and all that entails. Finding beauty in the everyday. Where ancestral heartbeats still pulse beneath the turf and whispers echo in those hidden places between ditches, inspiring her words, fine art imagery and richly textured wool paintings that will beguile you on your journey ‘Along the Loanin’.

THE YELLOW STAR

HOUSES OF BUDAPEST NIGEL SWANN

From June 1944, Budapest citizens defined as Jews by Hungarian race laws were obliged to wear a yellow star and live under curfew in confiscated houses also marked with a yellow star. Almost 2,000 such houses were used to incarcerate around 220,000 people before they were transferred to the death camps. Yellow star houses were unique to Budapest, and although nearly 1,600 of these apartment blocks are still in residential use today, their history was largely unknown until 2014. Neither the victims nor the perpetrators wanted to talk and a culture of forgetting prevailed.

Over a 10-year period, photographer Nigel Swann documented Budapest’s inner city, unbeknown to him then, that many of the buildings photographed were former yellow star houses. In 2014 he obtained, through Budapest’s ‘Open Society Archives’, the original government decree listing all houses to be designated a yellow star; with this new knowledge, Nigel returned and re-photographed these poignant locations.

Painter and Belfast School of Art PhD researcher, Vikkie Patterson, is a former bursary recipient at the John Hewitt Summer School and for this exhibition to coincide with the JHISS 2023, she exhibits new work on repurposed sackcloth created since the beginning of this year.

Hell Or High Water is an ongoing series of oil paintings on stretched and primed coffee bean sacks which reflects on the upheaval caused by contemporary global events. As with previous works in the series, there remains an element of optimism, and a promise of futurity embedded in these paintings.
