OUR WORK WITH THE COMMUNITIES Aboriginal Driver Training

Aboriginal Bus Driver Training

Aboriginal Cultural Art

ACE Community Colleges has had strong links with the Aboriginal Community for over 10 years. We are dedicated to improving outcomes for Aboriginal people through educational programs, in particular through assisting Aboriginal people to gain their driver licence, which can open the door to many new opportunities.

In addition to our driver training program, we have additional funding from Transport NSW and Lismore City Council to licence a total of 10 Aboriginal people from 7 communities with their bus driver licence. The licensing of Aboriginal bus drivers will provide transport to their own communities for events such as weddings, funerals and community events and pathways to future employment.

ACE supports Aboriginal Cultural Art by delivering our art training on the communities. Our trainers are practicing Aboriginal artists who deliver units from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Art. We also include Dance and Language aspects into the Cultural Art programs using Aboriginal Elders and cultural teachers to offer this part of the training.

We are currently delivering Aboriginal Driver Education to the following communities: Muli Muli Community Woodenbong, Box Ridge Community Coraki, Cabbage Tree Island Community, Ballina Community, Jubullum Village Tabulam, Lismore area. This Aboriginal Driver Training program is funded by Transport NSW and is exclusively for Aboriginal people. Eligibility criteria does apply. Our Program Co-ordinator links with the Aboriginal Communities to address educational and training needs by working closely with the Elders of all the communities where training has commenced and also with the Land Councils that service the communities. We currently have an 85% success rate for students taking their driving test for the first time. Work Development Orders Along with assisting Aboriginal people to gain their driver licence, the program also offers information and assistance to people experiencing difficulty in gaining or regaining their licence due to fines, infringements or low literacy skills.

At the time of going to press, our first student, Nicole Caldwell has passed her test and is hopeful to become the first female Aboriginal bus driver in Casino.

"We have truck drivers on both sides of our family. I used to sit with my Dad in his truck when I was 3 years old and always wanted to be a truck driver like him".

"When I saw the bus for the first time it looked so big and I thought 'I can't drive that' but it was easier than I expected. My trainers Steve and Julie from All Wheels were easy to understand and gave me the confidence to pass".

We are also big supporters of the endeavours of the Aboriginal community and worked closely to present the Aboriginal Art Pavilion and the opening ceremony for the North Coast National Show in Lismore in 2011 and 2012 and will again in 2013. ACE worked closely to support Bundjalung artists in taking their work to Sydney and other major cities for art exhibitions in 2010, 2011 and 2012. We also maintain links with the Aboriginal Cultural Centre in Nimbin, NSW, by actively offering training to the Coordinator of the Cultural Centre. Other Aboriginal programs include working with Conservation and Land Management programs based around the Northern Rivers region, as well as helping people work within their own communities in health services. Our cultural arts programs are hands-on and an effective way for Aboriginal people to be able to connect with their cultural identity, while gaining valuable skills for employment. ACE Community Colleges offers an open door policy to all Aboriginal people to come into our college and ask for assistance from our staff in all matters pertaining to their educational development.

"I will be so proud to be the first Aboriginal bus driver in Casino and show my community that you can do whatever you want to do if you put your mind to it".

For further information about any of our Aboriginal programs please contact our Aboriginal Program Co-ordinator Jan Levy on 6621 6777.

Beyond Beginners Drawing

$220

NEW! Marika Bryant We are all connected one way or another. Creating a portrait or collective group “shot” by not creating a portrait unveils (or veils!) the similarities we share: eyes, nose, mouth; a certain stance; an embrace; a sidelong glance; a group of people hanging around. Is it your uncle or my brother? Paint, texture “mark making”and removal of paint will help reveal hidden figures. You can never be sure of what will unfold, however everyone will leave with a completed canvas they love.

Julie De Lorenzo Go beyond beginners drawing and explore new techniques and methods for creating drawings with depth and interest. We will look at abstraction using different media and explore colour, pattern and mark making.

Caring for Native Bees

$25

Alison Drover Amazingly, every household in NSW wastes an average of $1,000 worth of food each year! Funded by the NSW Government, this workshop is run by well known 'Farm to Fork' chef, recipe writer and sustainability food consultant Alison Drover and aims to encourage householders to cut down on food waste. Alison is passionate about cooking delicious meals using leftover ingredients. "Food is wasted because we buy too much, cook too much, don't store food correctly and don't use leftovers" says Alison. She provides simple, practical advice on how to reduce your weekly shop and will have you cooking up delicious meals from ingredients lingering in the fridge or cupboard. She will give hands on cooking demonstrations and there will be plenty of delicious food to sample. All participants will be encouraged to participate in an online blog dedicated to sharing recipes for using leftovers, swapping food and any other ideas for saving on food wastage.

Frank Adcock The course introduces you to Australian native beekeeping and gives you the knowledge and confidence to care for your bees. You will be studying the stingless social species trigona.carbonaria, a “true blue” Australian bee which is native to our area. These little creatures are amazing to watch as they work, they don’t sting so the honey can be harvested safely, and they are great pollinators of local fruit and nut trees. If you think you might like to give a hive a home, come along to this information-packed session.
