Hows Your Coffee? What’s your favourite Coffee and what do you know about it? Text: Vanessa Stokes Let’s check your knowledge about what you drink! Affogato is Italian for drowned is a coffeebased. It usually takes the form of a scoop of vanilla gelato or ice cream topped with a shot of hot espresso. Some variations also include a shot of Amaretto or other liqueur. Caffè Americano, or Americano is a style of coffee prepared by adding hot water to espresso, giving it a similar strength to, but different flavour from, regular drip coffee. The strength of an Americano varies with the number of shots of espresso and the amount of water added. The name is also spelled with varying capitalization and use of diacritics: e.g., café Americano. In the United States, “Americano” is used broadly to mean combining hot water and espresso in either order, but in a narrower definition it refers to adding water to espresso (espresso on the bottom), while adding espresso to water (espresso on the top) is instead referred to as a long black. Café au lait is French for “coffee with milk”. The meaning of the term differs between Europe and the United States; in both cases it means some kind of coffee with hot milk added, in contrast to white coffee, which is coffee with room temperature milk or other whitener added. Café con leche is Spanish for “coffee with milk”. It is somewhat more similar to the Italian caffèlatte. A latte, however, is made with espresso. Café con leche is a coffee beverage consisting of strong or bold coffee (usually espresso) mixed with scalded milk in approximately a equal ratio. Sugar or sweetener is added according to taste. The beverage is extremely common in Spain and in many Latin American countries. Mocaccino or caffè mocha is a chocolate-flavoured variant of a caffelatte. Like a caffèlatte, it is based on espresso and hot milk, but with added chocolate, typically in the form of sweet cocoa powder, although many varieties use chocolate syrup. Mochas can contain dark or milk chocolate.
10
Coffee Times _ N0 1 2015
Café mocha in its most basic formulation, can also be referred to as hot chocolate with (e.g. a shot of) espresso added. Like the cappuccino, café mochas typically contain the well-known milk froth on top, although, as is common with hot chocolate, they are sometimes served with whipped cream instead. They are usually topped with a dusting of either cinnamon or cocoa powder and marshmallows may also be added on top for flavour and decoration. Caffè macchiato or Espresso macchiato, is an espresso coffee drink with a small amount of milk added, today usually foamed milk. In Italian, macchiato means ‘stained’ or ‘spotted’ so the literal translation of caffè macchiato is ‘stained coffee’, or coffee with a spot of milk. Cappuccino is traditionally prepared with espresso, hot milk, and steamed-milk foam. The name comes from the Capuchin friars, referring to the colour of their habits. Espresso is coffee brewed by forcing a small amount of nearly boiling water under pressure through finely ground coffee beans. Espresso is generally thicker than coffee brewed by other methods, has a higher concentration of suspended and dissolved solids, and has crema on top (foam with a creamy consistency). The flavours and chemicals in a typical cup of espresso are very concentrated. Espresso is the base for other drinks, such as a caffè latte, cappuccino, caffè macchiato, cafe mocha, or caffè Americano. Frappuccino is a trademark for a line of frozen coffee beverages sold by Starbucks. It consists of coffee or other base ingredient (e.g., strawberries and cream), blended with ice and other various ingredients, and usually topped with whipped cream. Frappuccinos are also sold as bottled coffee beverages in stores and from vending machines. Latte is made with espresso and steamed milk. The term as used in English is a shortened form of the Italian caffèlatte which means “milk coffee”. In northern Europe and Scandinavia the term ‘café au lait has traditionally been used for the combination of espresso and milk, but this term is used in the US for brewed coffee and scalded milk.
Image: Wisey Photography Latte macchiato Italian meaning literally means stained milk. This refers to the method of preparation, wherein the milk gets “stained” by the addition of espresso. It differs significantly from caffè latte firstly in that espresso is added to milk (rather than milk to espresso), secondly that it features more foam, rather than simply hot milk, thirdly in that often only ½ (or less) of an espresso shot is used, and fourthly in that it is often a “layered” drink, rather than being mixed as in a caffè latte. Simply, in a caffè latte, the emphasis is on the coffee, while in a latte macchiato, the emphasis is on the milk. The macchia is the little “spot” of crèma left on top of the milk to clearly distinguish that is a latte macchiato and not a caffè latte, where the espresso traditionally has been added before the milk, hence having no “mark”. Ristretto is a very short shot of espresso coffee. Originally this meant pulling a hand press (shown at right) faster than usual using the same amount of water as a regular shot of espresso. Since the water came in contact with the grinds for a much shorter time the caffeine is extracted in reduced ratio to the flavorful coffee oils. This is counterintuitive since caffeine is far more soluble than coffee oils. The resultant shot could be described as bolder, fuller, with more body and less bitterness. All of these flavors are usually attributed to espresso in general, but are more pronounced in ristretto.
Galão is a hot drink from Portugal made of espresso and foamed milk. In all similar to café latte or café au lait, it comes in a tall glass with about one quarter coffee, three quarters foamed milk, as opposed to the smaller Garoto (coffee) that is served in a demitasse/espresso smaller china cup. When the proportion is 1:1 it is called “meia de leite” (half of milk) and it comes in a cup. It can be said to be like a cortado but with a much larger amount of milk; the proportions are closer to a caffè latte. A Cortado is an espresso cut with a small amount of warm milk. The word cortado is the past participle of the Spanish verb cortar (to cut). In Spanish-speaking countries, a cortado is similar to the Italian caffè macchiato, where a small amount of warm milk is added to “cut” the espresso. In the United States, the ratio of milk to coffee is between 1:1 and 1:2, and the milk is added after the espresso. Now that you have this new information don#t be afraid to try some new tastes, life can get very boring if we keep drinking the same stuff. And if you are not sure what to ask for , you can always check out the menu adn see if there is a new name there. Coffee Times _ N0 1 2015

Your Coffee Experience We can all enjoy our coffee at home but let’s be honest, it doesn’t really compare to the experience of enjoying coffee out. I’m a big fan of Cafés and Coffee houses. People are calm, nobody is drunk and obnoxious. When you look around the Café you see a cross cut of society. People from many different walks of life. From my experience there are slightly more women in cafes. Students sometimes studying or researching, though often catching up on the latest night out. Business people, negotiating and pointing to a laptop. Then you can find regular friends casually catching up. Or sometimes, a friend trying to cheer another friend up and explain what a nasty person their former partner was, and why they are better off without them. Let’s not forget the Coffee Mums doting on their bellowed ones, watching them grow. Regarding the Café guests, the age profile seems to be between 20-40 year old people. Of course high school students are there too. For me I have had lots of special Coffee Times, I have had interviews, got jobs and lost jobs during this time. I guess you could say there is something magical about Cafés. First thing that welcomes you to the venue is the aroma of Coffee.

Coffee Times _ N0 1 2015
It doesn’t matter what beans they are using, Colombian, African etc, the aroma is amazing. And when you are not taking in the aroma of Coffee you can feast your eyes on then you wait eagerly, while their colleagues make your “fix”. And saving time you collect your long silver spoon and some serviettes. And if you’re lucky, they might even put your name on the cup! And when it finally comes, the anticipation, and the joy of getting something sweet, as long as it not covered in custard. Seriously what is with the custard obsession? Good tart needs nothing!! And there you have it, you find your seat, and the people next to you, tidy up their belongings and everyone gets back to enjoying their own Coffee Times.

Stockholm Fashion Week Stockholm recently held its Annual Fashion Week where Designers both big and small got their turn on the catwalk, guests were not disappointed. In the following pages we have some images from Kristian Löveborg of it all.
A FASHION WEEK FULL OF CONSCIOUS CHOICES
Fashion Week SS15 was a Fashion Week characterized by strong community involvement, thoughtful collections and a significant international presence. Stockholm’s Fashion Week was opened by Sweden’s Minister for Gender Equality, Maria Arnholm, who challenged her listeners to dress the way they wanted and be who they wanted to be. After that, she introduced the fashion week’s first showing – from Hunkydory.
Fashion Week SS15 was much about the independent and strong personality, an individual who makes conscious choices in all respects. This theme permeated many showings and was typically obvious in Cheap Monday’s young and playful showing at Forsgrénska Badet, in Ida Sjöstesdt’s girlish but powerful women and in BACK’s well-tailored, asymmetrical and conceptual display, with its confident undertone.
This season’s most talked about presentation came from Björn Borg in Bergrummet on Skeppsholmen. A love story visualized by way of models masked up as the virtual personalities of the videogame world.
The showings came to an end on Thursday with last season’s rookie Ida Klamborn, who was also livestreamed on Stureplan to the city’s general public as part of the programme during Fashion Night. Ida Klamborn followed up her acclaimed debut with a stunning display in the same strong spirit to live music by Seinabo Sey.
International interest in Swedish fashion continues to grow. Vogue had representatives on the spot from the USA, UK, Germany and Italy; Harpers Bazaar came from Germany and the USA; German InStyle had both their men’s and women’s editions on site and, among the rest, was British Grazia. Along with the great bloggers like Camille Cherrier, Pernille Teisbaek and Lucy Williams, the international presence was evident. Wednesday saw the organizing of “Fashion Talks” at Bukowski. The Season’s Fashion Talks – About Smart Wardrobes – debated the burning question of how we go about recycling our garments. Several innovative issues were presented during the seminar. Minister for the Environment, Lena Ek gave Naturvårdsverket (Sweden’s EPA) a big recycling assignment, Rodeo’s Lisa Corneliusson and blogger Emma Elwin unveiled a new sustainability website and Uniforms for the Dedicated announced a prepaid postage bag for garment returns. Fashion journalist and writer, Sofia Hedstrom led the discussion, attended by around a hundred.

J
ewellery & Ways to Show it
Whether fancy or costume, nothing can add oomph to your wardrobe like jewellery. Here are our tips for making sure your bling always looks its best. Enhance Your Style with Jewellery There is nothing that brings a smile to our face like a pretty ring, a jangly necklace, or some sparkly earrings. Big or small, real or fake, understated or over-the-top, jewellery lifts the spirits. It also lifts a look. Colourful beads or chandelier earrings could be just the thing to make an ordinary outfit outstanding. Read on for tips on how to best use jewellery to your fashion advantage. Show Your Style Spirit While jewellery is a very personal thing — gifts from your significant other, family heirlooms, purchases to mark milestones — it can also be a reflection of your style spirit. Some people can’t go out of the house without loading up necklaces, while for others simple studs will do. Some women prefer an armful of bangles, and some load up on brooches. No matter your preference, bits of baubles are all about adding joy to your look — so don’t stress, have fun with it. Don’t load up every finger. One adorned digit per hand looks best (especially with cocktail pieces), but max out at two each if you like to wear multiples. When wearing an attention-getting ring, keep in mind people will look — which means your nails should be properly groomed. Keep it chic. In some instances, loading up on the sparklies is an exciting way to accent. But know when to stop. An armful of bangles, for example, means you should think minimal with your necklaces and earrings. Tone it down when your clothes have a lot going on. A ruffle-front blouse can look sweet with a thin chain in the mix, but not with a big, ornate number. You don’t have to spend a lot on your baubles. Costume jewellery adds pizzazz. Beware of anything too cheap, and avoid pieces that are just poor imitations of the real deal.
Bring Life to Oufits with Necklaces/ Chains There are so many directions you can go when it comes to necklaces, from subtle (a simple gold chain or a strand of pearls) to bold (a wide bib or colourful beads) and lots of places in between. Necklaces/ Chain-Wearing Guidelines Layer up! A mix of necklaces in varied shapes and lengths can look festive. Stop at a few strands. You don’t want to look weighed down. A wide choker or bib demands attention and should be your sole statement maker. Forgo other jewellery when wearing such a fetching item. An open neckline on your top highlights your glitzy accent. The same goes for a solid-colour shirt. A draping necklace is lovely with a long frock. Choose a shorter strand with higher hemlines. Consider the vibe you are going for. Add colourful beads for a boho feel, silver chains for a touch of punk, or pearls for a prim and proper air. Up the Glam Factor with Rings You don’t have to have a major rock to indulge in an eye-catching ring. From classic gold bands to exotic stones, there are styles to suit all tastes and budgets. Use rings to make an even bigger statement every time you talk with your hands. Four Ways to Wear Rings A gob-stopper-size ring is the ideal partner for your cocktail frock. Try one for day, too, when you’re wearing basics. Stack your rings for a funky edge. To properly layer, choose ones that have flat edges or single stones and can be twisted to fit on top of each other. Don’t load up every finger. One adorned digit per hand looks best (especially with cocktail pieces), but max out at two each if you like to wear multiples. When wearing an attention-getting ring, keep in mind people will look — which means your nails should be properly groomed.

C o s m e t i c s , A r e Yo As many people turn to organic alternatives for their food and household cleaning items, they are discovering that there are more things that they can do to enhance green living. It’s no wonder that organic skin care products and organic make-up are increasing in popularity as well. Text: Vanessa Stokes
Consider this: Government regulations allow virtually any ingredient to be used in the manufacture of products that we use daily on our skin, hair, and nails, and in the water we drink. It only makes sense to get to the computer and your local library in search of healthier options. Authorities establish the regulations and standards regarding the manufacture of drugs & food. The problem is that they do not pay as much attention to skin care and make-up as they should, thereby allowing some very harmful chemicals to be used in creating almost every product that is mass marketed. Some of the harmful ingredients that are used frequently in manufacturing the most common nonorganic skin care and make-up items include: Mercury, Dioxane, Nitrosamines, DEA, Cyclomethicone Ammonium Laureth Sulfate, Alcohol, Isopropyl (SD-40) Polyethylene Glycol, Polyethylene ethMost of these compounds are absorbed easily by the skin, yet the body has no way of ridding itself of them. The toxins remain in your intestine and eventually get spread through the body and can damage organs throughout your body. What to Look for on Organic Skin Care & Make-up Products Labels Some of the ingredients that you will find present in many type of skin care products, including organic skin care products & organic make-up: Emollients, Humectants, Emulsifiers, Surfactants, Preservatives What you need to know about these essential ingredients for all organic skin care products and organic make-up is that there are both synthetic and natural versions of each. Synthetic emollients, humectants, emulsifiers, surfactants, and preservatives are all harmful for our bodies. At one time, such a task might have proven to be an enormous undertaking, but with the wealth of information that is available to us on the Internet, researching almost any product is a task that is relatively simple, and well worth the effort.

Coffee Times _ N0 1 2015
Read Product Labels & Learn About What You’re Getting If you want to protect your body from the harmful ingredients that are used in most commercial brands, you should check out organic skin care products and organic make-up. Of course, you will need to get in the habit of reading product labels, just as you probably do already when it comes to the foods that we buy. We are all concerned about our health and wellbeing, which means that it is important that we are proactive in choosing products that are good for us. Choosing organic skin care products and organic make-up does not have to be a tedious process. Once you have become reasonably familiar with the “bad” ingredients that are so commonly used in skin care products, you will learn to recognize the difference between synthetic & natural products. Becoming a more informed consumer will allow you to make smart choices while shopping for your organic skin care products. It may get a little frustrating when you’re initially trying to decipher labels because there are so many ingredients listed. One thing you can use that will help you to decipher product labels is to break each label into thirds. Focus on these ingredients first, because they usually make up the majority of the product. The rule is that the ingredients should be listed in descending order according to the amount that they make up the formula. For example, if you have a product that is 88% aloe and 90% water, the water would be listed first, the numbers show there’s more water than aloe. Alphabetic listing does not override this.

Cosmetics, Cut To Perfection People often talk about the physical effect of people getting plastic surgery, but the mental effect is of far more importance. Some year ago I worked in the west of Sweden and one of my colleagues was a girl in her midtwenties. She was not over weight but was of strong build. She explained very openly that she had undergone Breast implant surgery. I asked her why and she told me “Before when I had small boobs I felt unfeminine, especially when I’m heavy. But overnight I felt feminine, guys noticed me, my confidence was transformed, my life was transformed.” Until I met this woman and heard this I had no idea the impact and importance of plastic surgery to people. This was not a marketing effort or a TV advert, this was honest and from the heart. The girl had even said she had felt depressed about her body before she got her breasts enlarged. However while plastic surgery has the potential to make patients happier with their appearance, and even boost their self-esteem, it won’t necessarily address emotional or underlying psychological issues. While it may boost someone’s confidence as a result of an improved appearance, if there are deep-seated psychological issues, the procedure itself can only do so much to try to counter or erase the patient’s negative feelings about him or herself. Likewise, if a patient’s expectations are unrealistic, they will likely be dissatisfied and may even resent having undergone the procedure in the first place. Not every patient is a good candidate for plastic surgery. Most ethical plastic surgeons will encourage prospective patients to refrain from undergoing a particular procedure if in the physician’s mind the patient wouldn’t benefit from the procedure, is a poor medical risk, or has unrealistic motivations and expectations. Board-certified plastic surgeons work to educate patients about what is realistic and what isn’t, what can or can’t be achieved, and the benefits and the risks involved with any aesthetic procedure. Plastic surgery may not make you look 15 years younger, but it can minimize the signs of aging. Plastic surgery can change the appearance of a feature you are simply not thrilled with, be it a large nose, small breasts or excess skin/fat in any particular area – but it is not designed to transform you into an entirely different human being. Accordingly, if your doctor promises results that sound too good to be true, that should raise a red flag. Further, you generally can’t get dramatic results from minor procedures and anyone promising otherwise should raise red flags. In the appropriate 34
Coffee Times _ N0 1 2015
patient, a combination of surgical and nonsurgical procedures will often produce a better result than either option alone. Results of a procedure also depend on several factors such as a person’s anatomy, genetics, general health, the skill of the surgeon, and the patient’s willingness to follow directions - especially during recovery. Patients often come in with pictures of people whose features they want replicated on them. This is simply not realistic. Having plastic surgery is not going to give you Scarlett Johansson’s nose or Heidi Klum’s figure. What you’ll get is an improved version of what you’ve already got. Beware of procedures that are marketed as providing a huge improvement with no downside and no recovery time - because that is entirely unrealistic. Like any other surgery, plastic surgery procedures, including non-invasive procedures, are still medical procedures and come with risks. Laser procedures for instance, have the potential to burn the skin or leave it permanently pigmented. The risks associated with any procedure are generally lessened if the procedure is performed by a certified plastic surgeon. An ideal candidate for a plastic surgery procedure is someone who is in general good medical health, wants natural results, and is doing the procedure for their own motivation not someone else’s.

Care & Beauty Spa Enjoying Your Day Spa Visit. Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your visit.
T
here’s just something about walking into a day spa , isn’t there? It’s a haven from your hectic everyday life, an oasis that lets you do something just for you. Those massage or body treatment feels like a guilty indulgence, even though it’s probably necessary for your sanity! Whether you’re visiting a day spa for the first time or the fiftieth, these tips will help you get the most out of your massage, body wrap, aromatherapy, etc. Remember when Mom told you not to swim for an hour after eating? Well, the same holds true for spa visits. Don’t eat for at least an hour before a massage or body treatment. Arrive 30 minutes early. If you’re worried about being late, tapping your foot waiting for the elevator and rushing to the receptionist desk, you won’t get nearly as much out of your visit. RELAX! That’s how you’re supposed to feel after you’re done so if you can take a few deep breaths before your treatment (in the waiting room, since you’re early, right?) then your experience will be that much more rewarding. Drink LOTS of water before and after. Water enhances the detoxifying and rehydrating benefits. Talk to your therapists - they don’t bite! If anything feels off, let them know: too hot/cold, too much pressure/too little pressure, music’s too loud - anything. They want you to have the best experience possible so you’ll come back for more.

Angelina,Talented with Class Angelina Jolie is the most popular actress in the world right now, and when she is not filming, she is doing charitable acts for others less fortunate. Angelina is a star we can respect! Text: Noel Sheehy
Angelina Jolie, is not yet 40 but has had an incredible life so far. Not only is she a talented actress but she is also a filmmaker. But apart from her beauty, the most thing I find most beautiful about her is that she cares for others.
Hillenbrand’s biography Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption. She is also scheduled to direct and co-star with Brad Pitt in By the Sea, a romantic drama about a feuding couple who take a vacation in an effort to save their marriage.
She has received an Academy Award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and three Golden Globe Awards, and was named Hollywood’s highest-paid actress by Forbes in 2009, 2011, and 2013. Jolie promotes humanitarian causes, and is noted for her work with refugees as a Special Envoy and former Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). She has been cited as the world’s “most beautiful” woman by various media outlets, a title for which she has received substantial publicity.
Humanitarian work Angelina on her motives for joining UNHCR in 2001 “We cannot close ourselves off to information and ignore the fact that millions of people are out there suffering. I honestly want to help. I don’t believe I feel differently from other people. I think we all want justice and equality, a chance for a life with meaning. All of us would like to believe that if we were in a bad situation someone would help us.”
After a three-and-a-half-year absence from the screen, Jolie starred in the film Maleficent (2014). She played the titular role, the main antagonist from Disney’s 1959 animated feature Sleeping Beauty. The film showed the original story from Maleficent’s perspective, revealing the character’s background. The film received mixed reviews but Jolie’s performance was singled out for praise. Critic Sheri Linden of The Hollywood Reporter found her to be the “heart and soul” of the film, adding that she “doesn’t chew the estimable scenery in Maleficent she infuses it, wielding a magnetic and effortless power”. The film grossed $69.4 million on its opening weekend in North America, making it the biggest opening performance in Jolie’s career, and the third highest opening weekend for a solo female star, behind the two films in The Hunger Games series. Maleficient went on to gross over $755 million worldwide, becoming Jolie’s highest-grossing film. As of July 2014, Jolie has completed work on her second directorial venture, Unbroken, a film about the World War II hero Lou Zamperini, a former Olympic track star who survived a plane crash over sea and spent two years in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp. Joel and Ethan Coen adapted the script, based on Laura 38 Coffee Times _ N0 1 2015
Over the next decade, she went on field missions around the world and met with refugees and internally displaced persons in more than 30 countries. In 2002, when asked what she hoped to accomplish, she stated, “Awareness of the plight of these people. I think they should be commended for what they have survived, not looked down upon.” To that end, her 2001–02 field visits were chronicled in her book Notes from My Travels, which was published in October 2003 in conjunction with the release of her film Beyond Borders. She aimed to visit what she termed “forgotten emergencies”, crises that media attention had shifted away from and she became noted for going “where real bullets fly”, traveling to such war zones as Sudan’s Darfur region during the Darfur conflict, the Syrian-Iraqi border during the Second Gulf War, where she met privately with U.S. troops and other multi-national forces, and the Afghan capital Kabul during the war in Afghanistan, where three aid workers were murdered in the midst of her first visit. Cancer prevention treatment In 2013, Angelina underwent a preventive double mastectomy after learning she had an 87% risk of developing breast cancer. Angelina said “I choose not to keep my story private because there are many women who do not know that they might be living under the shadow of cancer. It is my hope that they, too, will be able to get gene tested.”

Rikard Olsson Rickard is a hugely popular personality in Sweden. And having met the man he is just as charming in real life. His aim, last time I interviewed him, was to follow the footsteps of UK TV host Parkinson. Text: Noel Sheehy What’s been going on since our last interview? Lots, eight years is a long time. My daughter is starting to approach the teen years, I have become a partner, built a house at the place where I bought a shack 15 years ago because I loved the place. I have grown in the soul, had facial wrinkles and feel more at ease than perhaps ever in life. As this interview is for Coffee Time, how do you like your Coffee? Strong, powerful and dark! no sugar, no milk, black as night. Rickard what are you doing today? Work and songs for me. Mixing moderator job with horse-riding and water safaris in the archipelago. Why did you leave Bingo Lotto? I was done with the program, plus I thought it was such a shame that it ended up in TV7, Program marginalized instead of one to make it cool to play for Sweden’s clubs and associations. It’s such a shame that Sweden Athletics didn’t understand the power of the program. Many Clubs have built hockey and indoor soccer facilities from money Bingolotto gave them. What’s the difference between hosting Bingolotto and Vem vet mest? There are many similarities, there are ordinary people who make the program, there is judgment involved and as well as the content of the program. I’ll make sure that everyone is going well and that the program is optimal. The difference lies in that it regarded as little better to be good at trivia while winning by chance seen as a little less fancy. Personally, I’d rather win 3 million Bingolotto tax free than to win $ 10,000 + 30% tax on the money in the Friday finals after beating up 31 people hard core knowledge. It is so that the profit you get in the quiz, you always underestimate for because it is a feat. To give you the chance in a raffle 3-4 million it is still right into your pocket.

Any exciting plans in the pipeline? I go to Tanzania tomorrow with Wild Kids, come home get changed and whizzing to NY to run the New York Marathon extremely untrained for the task. Do you like a trip to the Café? Always, love cafes. I am an old cafe revolutionary. I have changed the society, drinking coffee and playing pinball at the cafe since 1983. How’s the private life? My private life is great, I’m living with the world’s best, we have been together 6 years and hold hands, kiss and give each other praise and declarations of love every day. It’s that kind of relationship I want to grow old in. Did you ever go back doing Judo? I took a relapse a few years ago when I became coach in Gribbylunds judo club. I love Judo, but I would participate now, it would probably just be kata exercises. Are you still hoping to become like Parkinson? Mmm but not Parkinson’s, but a current affairs program on television. A bit like Aftonbladet where entertainment, sports and politics do not differ very much, without talking about what is most appropriate. A program with different temperaments, delight, seriousness and a bit of humor. Anything extra you can tell us? Hobbies? Favourite sports, teams? I think all guys should start riding. There is such a high adrenaline sports and so I have become addicted. Did you vote? Obviously, always. It was obvious on election day today feels more secure if I chose right.

Regina Lund Choosing Life! Image:Marie-Therese Karlberg
Some Stars, who have a talent in various areas deserve respect, in this case it’s an Actress, Singer who became a Painter and fought cancer on the way. Regina is cancer free. And feeling better than ever. Text: Noel Sheehy When did you begin painting and what drew you towards it? I started painting in charcoal when I was 14 years old, and the first piece I made was a portrait of my grandfather, Wiggo Lund whom I grew up with. He was the one who introduced me to the art world. He took me to Guggenheim in NYC when I was 10 years old and that was something I never forget. My dream is to exhibit there one day. I loved my grandfather very much and was heartbroken when he passed away. I named my son after him. Describe your paintings, they seem deep? Have you a favourite? I can’t say which piece of art is my most important one, all of them are, but maybe “Rebirth” , “Protection” , “Between Life and Death” , “Coming for the Time”, Jag älskar Dig “are my favourites. “Coming for the Time” The original was made in 2013 after my band Sunshine Supermoon had the song,” Coming for the Time.” Both the song and the painting are a prayer for more life-time. The painting is vibrating with green and gold and I wanted it to be like a magical clock that could bring people back to life and health and give more life-time. I painted it in order to heal. I just got the message I had cancer and I cried and cried for weeks asking God and the universe for more time. More time with my son, more time in this life, I was in shock but still really determined to get more life-time, to get a second life with my son and to paint myself back to more life, more love and more time. I had a small second hand 48 Coffee Times _ N0 1 2015
apartment on Skånegatan in Stockholm listening to the song I just made laying on the floor with my paint and canvas not knowing if I was going to survive. I thought that if I die I need to leave something important behind, something useful, something magical for my son: a clock that vibrates you into more life. I cried and painted in despair but hoping the clock I was painting would bring me more life-time and it did! I am very thankful for surviving. “ Between Life and Death” I painted it, when I didn’t know if I was going to live or die. I was in a trance. I made the golden egg representing life and the vibrating gold representing death, rebirth and the universe. I was an alien foetus in the middle making a choice in a red dramatic universe. Again chaotic and persistent, decisive to stay alive. I was painting in the same room at the same time as “Coming for the Time”. I had the song “Coming for The time”, playing on repeat for inspiration. A lot of my songs are inspiring my paintings. I was in so much physical pain, not from this earth, impossible to describe. Both paintings were donated to Child Cancer Fund. I need to make it less painful and more effective for others. Who buys your paintings? Hopefully, you who are reading this! Have you a favourite painter? As for other artists I am very fond of Bauer, Klimt, Rodin and Picasso. A favourite art piece of mine is “The Kiss” by Klimt.

-ed even more life force than ever before I got in a hurry to live life to the full and little miracles started happening both in my art and in my personal life.
What’s 2014 been like for you? Turbulent, creative and miraculous. I feel reborn. Like I just received my second life. My heart is overflowing. New worlds are opening up. I have experienced unexpected surprisingly strong emotions I have never experienced before. I have felt love and life on a whole new level. I have crossed comfort zones, survived, got back on my feet and I have been brave. I have played theatre, got stronger in my psychic and healing abilities, painted new art in new colours, had art exhibitions, written new songs , performed live and got back to life. My heart has exploded with new life and I am so very thankful. I am finally back in my earth body with full force experiencing life in even brighter colours and with new intensity. Like a child seeing Earth for the first time. Everything is new. I think I have to change my birthday to being 8th of April 2014. Has your health had an influence on your painting and if so how? Absolutely. My life was taken away from me and I got it back and the way I got it back was through singing, writing, recording, performing live, playing theatre, healing other people and painting. I painted and sang myself back to life. The panic I felt in 2013 from hearing the words “ one year left to live” before I was treated got me going with my art at the speed of light in a hurry wanting to leave something behind for my son and for the world. I remember you mentioning “Karma Account” tell us about this and your spirituality? Are you religious? I belong to no religion I belong to every religion, I belong to no one and everyone, I belong to myself and to all, I belong to the Universe and right now I am here visiting Earth. Freedom of choice, as we have it here on Earth, is hard to deal with sometimes but it is essential that we do and that we live through it. Our choices, our Karma if you will, leads us on various paths. Different choices create different paths and you are God choosing your path. Your actions or non-actions will define you both in this life, the past and the ones to come. Each person has their own truth and that is how it has to be on this planet. That is our challenge here on Earth to respect that we are all different and we are all the same in that difference. I believe we all have more power over the collective consciousness than we think. Every soul in the Universe helps create what we are. What can we expect from you in 2015? Expect me to be very much alive! What would you change in your career? I wish I had honoured my gifts more. I can’t relive it, at least that is my illusion right now that I can’t so I stick to the now. From now on I will honour my gifts and I will ask for help. I didn’t ask for help before. Now I do. I should do a cover of The Beatles “Help”... Maybe I’ll do a Beatles cover album in 2015. Tell us about your Movie goals and experience? I want to make more movies; International movies are very interesting to me. I want to work with interesting directors and scripts. Challenging roles where I can use my whole spectra as a multilingual actress. I launched my acting career in the 1996 film “Harry & Sonja”, where I played a lifeguard at a swimming pool with Stellan Skarsgård. I had the leading role in the 1999 thriller film “Sjön”. After that I had more leading roles in “Hassel – Förgöraren” and so on but I am
so much into my second life that history feels irrelevant. I am here and now and apart from my art and music albums I have no desire to dwell in the past” What’s happening on the Music side now and what have you done to date? Right now I’m writing new songs and performing live. I’ve just written seven songs both in English and Swedish. Once I find the right producer I will release an album working title is Rebirth. I made the albums, Unique, Year Zero, GG the musical album singing lead part as Garbo. Then I started my own record label Regina Records and gave out Everybody’s Darling act 1,2, I released albums Return, Dare, Förlåt Nej Jag menar Aj, Living in Airports”,” Kom, Kom dansa”, “Breathe”, and “Sunshine Super Moon”. I had various singles like “Rainbow Star” and the latest single is a duet called “Scandinavian Rain” out on iTunes. I recorded songs for film music in the controversial Swedish film “Kärlekens Språk”. I started performing on stage with musicals and comedies when I was 12. And did music and dance throughout my upbringing. Later I went to Gothenburg’s renowned Theatre and Opera school, wrote poetry and did performances. My first song was a poem called “Pure”, and I had it in the Grammy nominated debut album Unique. Anything else we should know about you? I have been a healer and psychic for 25 years undercover. Legend Greta Garbo, t
Mention Hollywood and famous actresses, and it’s not long before Greta Garbo’s name pops up. She was a Swedish film actress and an international star and icon during Hollywood’s silent and classic periods. Despite her strenuous efforts to avoid publicity, Greta paradoxically became one of the twentieth century’s most publicized women in the world. Text: Noel Sheehy Greta Garbo was her screen name but her actual name was Greta Lovisa Gustafsson. She was born in 1905 in Södermalm, Stockholm and sadly passed away in 1990. Her family were impoverished and lived in a three-bedroom cold-water flat at Blekingegatan. They raised their three children in a working-class district regarded as the city’s slum. Greta would later recall: “It was eternally grey those long winter’s nights. My father would be sitting in a corner, scribbling figures on a newspaper. On the other side of the room my mother is repairing ragged old clothes, sighing. We children would be talking in very low voices, or just sitting silently. We were filled with anxiety, as if there were danger in the air. Such evenings are unforgettable for a sensitive girl. Where we lived, all the houses and apartments looked alike, their ugliness matched by everything surrounding us.” Greta was a shy daydreamer as a child. She hated school and preferred to play alone. Yet she was an imaginative child and a natural leader who became interested in theatre at an early age. She directed her friends in make-believe games and performances and dreamed of becoming an actress. Later, she would participate in amateur theatre with her friends and frequent the Mosebacke Theater. At the age of 13, Greta graduated from school, and, typical of a Swedish workingclass girl at that time, she did not attend high school. She would later confess she had an inferiority complex about this. Greta was nominated three times for the Academy Award for Best Actress and received an honorary one in 1954 for her “luminous and unforgettable screen performances.” She also won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress for both “Anna Karenina” (1935) and “Camille” (1936). In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Garbo fifth on their list of greatest female stars of all time, after Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Audrey Hepburn, and Ingrid Bergman. 54

Greta launched her career with a secondary role in the 1924 Swedish film “The Saga of Gosta Berling”. Her performance caught the attention of Louis B. Mayer, chief executive of Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM), who brought her to Hollywood in 1925. She immediately stirred interest with her first silent film, “Torrent”, released in 1926; a year later, her performance in “Flesh and the Devil”, her third movie, made her an international star. Greta’s first talking film was “Anna Christie” (1930). MGM marketers enticed the public with the catch-phrase “Garbo talks!” That same year she starred in “Romance”. For her performances in these films she received the first of three Academy Award nominations for Best Actress. Academy rules at the time allowed for a performer to receive a single nomination for their work in more than one film. In 1932, her popularity allowed her to dictate the terms of her contract and she became increasingly selective about her roles. Many critics and film historians consider her performance as the doomed courtesan Marguerite Gautier in Camille to be her finest. The role gained her a second Academy Award nomination. After working exclusively in dramatic films, Greta turned to comedy with “Ninotchka” (1939), which earned her a third Academy Award nomination, and “TwoFaced Woman” (1941), her last film. In a 1950 Daily Variety opinion poll, Garbo was voted Best Actress of the Half Century, In 1957, she was awarded The George Eastman Award, given by George Eastman House for distinguished contribution to the art of film. In November 1983, she was made a Commander of the Swedish Order of the Polar Star by order of King Carl XVI Gustaf, the King of Sweden. For her contributions to cinema, she has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6901 Hollywood Boulevard.

Greta Garbo was once designated the most beautiful woman who ever lived by the Guinness Book of World Records. Greta appears on a number of postage stamps, and in September 2005, the United States Postal Service and Swedish Posten jointly issued two commemorative stamps bearing her image. On 6 April 2011, Sveriges Riksbank announced that Greta’s portrait is featured on the 100 krona banknote, in 2014–15. In 1941, she retired at the age of 35 after appearing in 28 films. Although she was offered many opportunities to return to the screen, she declined all of them. Instead, she lived a private life, shunning publicity. Greta never married, had no children and lived alone as an adult. She was something of an art collector and her art collection was worth millions at the time of her death. Her Legacy Greta was widely regarded as a cinematic legend. Almost immediately, with the sudden popularity of her first pictures, she became a screen icon. For most of her career, she was the highest paid actor or actress at MGM, making her for many years its “premier prestige star.” It has been said that at the peak of her popularity she had become a virtual cult figure. Greta developed an acting style that is thought to have been ahead of its time, one that set her apart from other actors and actresses of the period. About her work in silent, film critic Ty Burr said, “This was a new kind of actor not the stage actor who had to play to the far seats but someone who could just look and with her eyes literally go from rage to sorrow in just a closeup.” Because Greta was suspicious and mistrustful of the media, and often at odds with MGM executives, she spurned Hollywood’s publicity rules. Except at the start of her career, she conducted few interviews (she gave only 14 in her life), signed no autographs, attended few industry social functions, and turned down all but a few requests for public appearances. She was routinely referred to by the press as the “Swedish Sphinx.” Her reticence and fear of strangers perpetuated the mystery and mystique that she projected both on screen and in real life. 56 Coffee Times _ N0 1 2015

Style Tips- from our Stylist Here we talk to our fashion stylist Lilliana Toraby and look at what’s in store for the year. What colour is hot? Base colours for spring 2015: beige, white and light grey. In addition, it may be pink its Renaissance period, and the colour does one regardless of style. Ice Blue, fresh white, lemon yellow, cherry red, light rose.
Insanely long extensions: This length is perfect for pulling off Elsa-inspired side braid this year it’s all about texture and short, chic cuts, so take a cue from T.Swift. Ombrè: Bye, ombrè. Baliage (painting on highlights for a more natural, sun-kissed finish that grows out beautifully) is back, proving to be the prettiest way to colour your hair in 2015. Eagle talon tips: Whether nude or coloured, almond-shaped nails need to stay in 2014. In 2015, file your nails into a shape that mimics that of your cuticles for a more natural look. What can we expect to see in the stores over the coming seasons?
Anything from 2014 which you think will still look good in 2015? Trends persist: white from head to toe, striped, oversized jackets, shirts with a logo, silver details and V-neck. Tell us what’s NOT in for 2015? Beauty Trends That Need to Die in 2015: Forced waves: Really done-up hair can look contrived rather than effortlessly cool. For a more current take on curls, opt for unpolished bends (seen at the Narciso Rodriguez show), which you can create with a flat iron. Fan-like lashes: Amping up your lashes is a surefire way to draw attention to your eyes, but it has to be done the right way or else your fringe ends up looking really fake. To make sure your lashes looking natural instead of like a fan, apply several coats of mascara, waiting a minute in between applications so the formula properly adheres to the coat before it. Or use individual falsies, or cut a lash strip in half and apply it to the outer corner of your eye only. Overdrawn lips: If you already have an Angelina Jolie-like pout, stick to a barely there nude lip or just use balm, since a light pastel shade makes lips look plump, and the last thing you need is for your lips to not be proportionate to the rest of your features. 60

Boot-cut pants: 60s and 70s inspired fashion scene in recent seasons, and as a further, relaxed silhouette has become very fashionable. Even foot widths on pants have expanded and the new IT pants spring 2015, the boot-cut model. You wear your flared trousers off and urban chic with a top casually tucked. Or why not go all-in disco diva and match with a sparkly top. Materials: What items are made of is becoming increasingly important due to increasing environmental and quality-aware. On the catwalk creations from silk, cotton, linen and wool are on the rise. The advantage with natural materials is that they are cool in summer and have a long life. The trend of combining various materials in an outfit continues.
Top 20 trends Spring/ Summer 2015?
Pattern: As sure as snow in winter, is the floral pattern which is visible where possible. This season, we see a plethora of botanical patterns, even on the men’s side. Both beautifully overgrown, grandmother floral and naively large floral appeared on garments, shoes and accessories. Generation cool chooses big plaid. Oscar Jacobson showed that full checkered costume works great for the party with stricter dress. .

Dapper, Hipster & Vogue Cool Söder? Hipsters are evolving, the result are Dappers. So get ready for crazier beards and smarter clothes with more intellect thrown in. Dappers share all the same philosophies and outlooks as hipsters. And Söder the cool location of hipsters in Stockholm, caught the attention of vogue!
F
YI the common definition of Dapper is a compliment made to someone who looks incredibly smart, sexy and stylish. Hipsters and Dapper are a subculture of people typically between 20s and 40’s. They appreciate independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter. In Sweden you will find Hipsters in areas like Söder, Stockholm and throughout Gothenburg. Although “hipsterism” is really a state of mind, it is also often intertwined with distinct fashion sensibilities. Hipsters reject the culturally-ignorant attitudes of mainstream consumers, and are often be seen wearing vintage and thrift store inspired fashions, tight-fitting jeans, old-school sneakers, and sometimes thick rimmed glasses. Both hipster men and women sport similar androgynous hair styles that include combinations of messy shag cuts and asymmetric side-swept bangs. Such styles are often associated with the work of creative stylists at urban salons, and are usually too “edgy” for the culturally-sheltered mainstream consumer.
The “effortless cool” urban bohemian look of a hipster is exemplified in Urban Outfitters and American Apparel ads which cater towards the hipster demographic. Despite misconceptions based on their aesthetic tastes, hipsters tend to be well educated and often have liberal arts degrees, or degrees in maths and sciences, which also require certain creative analytical thinking abilities. Consequently many hipsters tend to have jobs in the music, art, and fashion industries. Hipsters are also very racially open-minded, and the greatest number of interracial couples in any urban environment are typically found within the hipster subculture. 62

It is a myth that most hipsters are unemployed and live off of their parent’s trust funds. Hipsters shun mainstream societal conventions that apply to dating preferences and traditional “rules” of physical attraction. It is part of the hipster central dogma not to be influenced by mainstream advertising and media, which tends to only promote ethnocentric ideals of beauty. The concepts of androgyny and feminism have influenced hipster culture, where hipster men are often as thin as the women they date. The muscular and athletic all-American male ideal is not seen as attractive by confident and culturally-empowered hipster women who instead view them as symbols of male oppression, sexism, and misogyny. Likewise, culturally-vapid sorority-type girls with fake blond hair, overly tanned skin, and “Britney Spears tube-tops” are not seen as attractive by cultured hipster males who instead see them as symbols of female insecurity, low self-esteem, and lack of cultural intelligence and independent thinking. Although hipsters are technically conformists within their own subculture, in comparison to the much larger mainstream mass, they are pioneers and leaders of the latest cultural trends and ideals. For example, the surge of jeans made to look old and worn (i.e. “distressed”), that have become prevalent at stores such as The Gap, American Eagle, Abercrombie and Fitch, and Hollister, were originally paraded by hipsters who shopped in thrift stores years before such clothing items were mass produced and sold to the mainstream consumer. The true irony here is that many of the detractors of hipster culture are in fact unknowingly following a path that hipsters have carved out years before them. This phenomenon also applies to music as well, as many bands have become successful and known to mainstream audiences only because hipsters first found and listened to them
as early-adopters of new culture. Once certain concepts of fashion and music have reached mainstream audiences, hipsters move on to something new and improved. Because of the rise of various online photo-blog and social networking sites, insights into urban hipster culture is reaching sheltered suburban audiences at an exponential rate. Cultural “norms” have been deconstructed by hipster culture as a whole. Hipsterism is often dismissed as just an image thing by some, but the culture as a whole is effecting changes in society, leading to feelings of insecurity and resentment in people who are no longer a part of the cultural ruling class. For example, a lot of anti-hipster sentiment evidently comes from culturally-clueless suburban frat boy types who feel that the more sensitive, intelligent, and culturally aware hipster ideal threatens their insecure sense of masculinity. Anti-hipster sentiment often comes from people who simply can’t keep up with social change and are envious of those who can. So keep an eye out for Dappers and the evolution of the Hipster. You can expect to see an increase in pipe smokers, except instead of grandpa its someone much younger

The article reads as follows; In honor of the new street style, we’ve put together a list of the globe’s hippest neighborhoods, from Mexico City to Tokyo. And if you feel inspired for a lastminute early-fall getaway, just remember when packing: Reality trumps fantasy. “Paris is always a good idea” When I told my photographer we were heading to Paris for a few days, she immediately posted on Facebook, “Paris is always a good idea” (phrase made famous by Audrey Hepburn) She was right. We jumped on the next flight and soon found ourselves in the city of Love. Text: Noel Sheehy
P
aris is known as the city for lovers, and yes it’s romantic, but let’s pause the “lovey dovey” for a minute. Paris can be whatever you want it to be. If you love cosy cafés, it’s got one on every street, including the famous Ladurée. If you love history, well think Napoleon or the French Revolution. If you love art then check out the most valuable painting in the world, the Mona Lisa at the Louvre museum. Yes it’s true, it’s so valuable it’s not insured and no one can put a price on it. Alternatively you can check out today’s artists at Montmartre, where you can easily get a portrait done. If you love food, then, you have come to the right place. You will see why any super chef in the world will have worked in a French kitchen fine tuning their skills. And of Course another thing to love about Paris, it’s Architecture, its Eiffel Tower, and Louvre Museum pyramid The “new Paris architecture” like the arc de la Defénse, The museum of Quay Branly or the centre Georges Pompidou. And for fashion lovers, its home to most of the main designers, many of whose stores are on the street, Champs-Élysées while exclusive Jewels are found on Place Vendôme. Here are a few must see sights. Some are free, some a little expensive but all are worth seeing and queuing for! Paris is enormous so a Bus Tour is the best means of taking in all the treats on offer.

The Eiffel Tower was built by Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 Exposition Universelle, which was to celebrate the 100th year anniversary of the French Revolution. Its construction in 2 years, 2 months and 5 days was a veritable technical and architectural achievement. “Utopia achieved”, a symbol of technological prowess, at the end of the 19th Century it was a demonstration of French engineering personified by Gustave Eiffel, and a defining moment of the industrial era. It was met immediately with tremendous success. It was only intended to last 20 years. Since the 1980s, the monument has regularly been renovated, restored and adapted for an ever-growing public. Over the decades, the Eiffel Tower has seen remarkable achievements, extraordinary light shows, and prestigious visitors. A mythical and audacious site, it has always inspired artists and challenges. It is the stage for numerous events of international significance. Almost 250 million visitors regardless of age or origin have come from all over the planet to see it since its opening in 1889.Like all towers, it allows us to see and to be seen, with a spectacular ascent, a unique panoramic view of Paris, and a glittering beacon in the skies of the Capital. The Tower also represents the magic of light. Its lighting, its sparkling lights, and its beacon shine and inspire dreams every evening. As France’s symbol in the world, and the showcase of Paris, today it welcomes almost 7 million visitors a year (around 75% of whom are foreigners), making it the most visited monument that you have to pay for in the world. Probably the most romantic spot in the world.

The Louvre Museum is unquestionably one of the finest art galleries in the world. Home to hundreds of thousands of classic and modern masterpieces, the Louvre is the icing on the cake of French culture and a testament to European art history – it’s not surprising that it’s also the most visited art gallery in the world! Classic works of art from Mona Lisa to Venus de Milo. Around 380,000 objects from pre-history to the 21st century with 35,000 works of art over 8 departments. Fronts onto the gorgeous landscaped Tuileries Gardens. The Louvre was originally built as a fortress in 1190, but later reconstructed to be a royal palace in the 16th century before the monarchy moved out to Château de Versailles. Notable masterpieces include the Mona Lisa, which was procured by Francis I, Hyacinthe Rigaud’s Louis XIV; Jacques-Louis David’s The Coronation of Napoleon and Eugène Delacroix’s Liberty Leading the People. The Louvre Pyramid (Pyramide du Louvre) is a large glass and metal pyramid, surrounded by three smaller pyramids, in the main courtyard (Cour Napoléon) of the Louvre Palace (Palais du Louvre). The large pyramid serves as the main entrance to the Louvre Museum. Completed in 1989, it has become a landmark of the city of Paris. It’s a must see along with the relaxing water fountains above the Louvre. The Arc de Triomphe is perhaps the most iconic of all French monuments, and without a doubt one of the most triumphal. Built in the early 1800’s, it’s iconic in style and sculpture to the decoration popular at the first half of the nineteenth century and visitors can admire its delicate design and engravings. Instantly recognisable and deeply evocative of the military history of France, the Arc de Triomphe provides a glimpse into France’s social past as well as spectacular views across central Paris. Monument to tribute French soldiers lost in all the wars with a Crypt of the Unknown Soldier. 50m high panoramic views over the city. The Arc de Triomphe was commissioned by Napoleon in 1806, however, he died before he got to see it completed though his body was passed under it to reach its final resting place. The Place de la Concorde is one of the major public squares in Paris, France. During the French Revolution the statue of Louis XV of France was torn down and the area renamed “Place de la Révolution”. The new revolutionary government erected the guillotine in the square, and it was here that King Louis XVI was executed on 21 January 1793.It is the largest square in the French capital. It is located in the city’s eighth arrondissement, at the eastern end of the Chmps-Élysées.

Champs-Élysées
is an avenue boulevard in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, almost two kilometres long and 70 metres wide, which runs between the Place de la Concorde and the Place Charles De Gaulle, where the Arc de Triomphe is located. It is famous for its theatres, cafes and luxury shops, and for the military parade that takes place each year on the avenue on 14 July to celebrate Bastille Day. The name is French for Elysian Fields, the paradise for dead heroes in Greek mythology. The Moulin Rouge meaning “Red Mill” is home to Paris Cabaret. The house was co-founded in 1889 and made super popular in recent years after the movie. Close to Montmartre in the Paris district of Pigalle on Boulevard de Clichy in the 18th arrondissement, it is marked by the red windmill on its roof. Moulin Rouge is best known as the spiritual birthplace of the modern form of the can-can dance. Originally introduced as a seductive dance by the courtesans who operated from the site, the can-can dance revue evolved into a form of entertainment of its own and led to the introduction of cabarets across Europe. Today, the Moulin Rouge is a tourist attraction, offering musical dance entertainment for visitors from around the world. The club’s decor still contains much of the romance of fin de siècle France. Montmartre is a hill in the north of Paris. It gives its name to the surrounding district, in the 18th arrondissement, a part of the Right Bank. The historic district is primarily known for the white-domed Basilica of the Sacré Cœur on its summit and as a nightclub district. The other, older, church on the hill is Saint Pierre de Montmartre, which claims to be the location at which the Jesuit order of priests was founded. Many artists had studios or worked in or around Montmartre, including Salvador Dalí, Amedeo Modigliani, Claude Monet, Piet Mondrian, Pablo Picasso, Camille Pissarro and Vincent van Gogh. Montmartre is also the setting for several hit films. It’s a bit of a walk but it’s worth it. For me it’s the best part of the city so bohemian!
The Notre Dame Cathedral was built within 40 years, construction began about 1160. NotreDame de Paris is over 800 years old! Appointed bishop of Paris in 1160, Maurice de Sully decided to give the capital a cathedral worthy of France’s largest city. He wanted to build it in the style of the day, now known as the gothic style. King Louis VII, one of his classmates, encouraged the project. The Church, notable residents of the city, and the entire population participated in construction: some offered money, others offered their labour, while others offered their knowledge. Since it was built, the cathedral has been one of the main symbols of Paris and of France. It has been stage to major religious and political events, which is why the historian Michelet said that Notre-Dame is a history book in its own right. We could not list all the major events here. We would need pages and pages! We will still mention the following facts: when the cathedral wasn’t even completed, in the late 13th century, the Parisians watched over the body of the King, Saint Louis, who died in Tunis; it is here that King Philip the Fair opened the first Estates General of the Kingdom of France in 1302; in 1572, it was here that King Henry IV married Marguerite de Valois, and where he converted to Catholicism in 1594; it is where Pope Pius VII crowned Napoleon I Emperor of the French in 1804. Finally I hope you find love in Paris, whether it’s with a special someone, or one of Paris’s special landmarks. And if you find yourself feeling nostalgic afterwards, simply check out the number of movies made about the city ie Midnight in Paris, Amélie, Moulin Rouge and La Môme.

On Stage: “Shan Da Man” Here we meet Kagan Atci Shan, who was born in 1978 in Flemingsberg. In case you don’t know he is a Swedish-Kurdish comedian. He starred in the first two seasons of Stockholm Live 2004 and 2005, but then jumped off to invest in his own stand-up show. Text: Noel Sheehy Why are you known as “Shan Da Man”? People came to my early show, and chanted “Da Man” and now I’m trying to shake off the name but it impossible. When did you decide to do comedy? When I started there were two clubs in Stockholm. And after my first appearance, I was hooked on it like heroin, I will never forget it. Today there’s 15 clubs in Stockholm. I returned from the US and I always wrote down small anecdotes and jokes. My cousin and I saw bad comedians in Gamla Stan, and afterwards my cousin was like “Dude you are funnier than those guys, so next day I went back in there, I got more attitude than talent. I said to the management “You don’t know me? I did small addition on a Sunday for 15 minutes, and then I was performing the following night. Do you feel Swedish? Do you find Swedes funny? I was born here but I don’t feel Swedish, what is been a Swede? Swedes have changed; it’s so fluid, before it was köttbullar, now its Gucci shoes. Swedes are funny but they don’t know about it. Things which were funny five years ago aren’t funny now. Stand-up comedy is big business in Sweden. Mafia Comedy has rookies five days a week, some real comedians coming through. From misery and poverty comes comedy. We Kurds are funny, everyone has this funny bone. Ever temped to work abroad? I want to do acting and stuff. I’ve a lot of things keeping me here in Stockholm, family and business. In business there are three key aspects, visualising, planning and seeing it through. Make things happen. Lots of work things here also, marketing in production and TV. We do script writing etc. What would you be if not a stand up? Acting, but I love the business side of things, closing deals, meeting people. 72

Where do you get material from? Everyday life, there are a lot of comedians who can sit down and write something funny, I can’t do that, I need something to trigger the funny bone, then when I have that I write it down and think about it, and then try it at a club and if people like it, I do it on my tours. Where do you tour? We do big cities and then the small cities, we are doing Gothenburg again. We did 3 sold out shows in Stockholm; I did two of my three dvd specials in Gothenburg at Draken. How is your favourite comic in Sweden? Abroad? Özz Nûjen and Johan Glans. Outside of Sweden I like Kevin Hart in the US. I’m old school I like Richard Prior I was raised with American comedians. Most Swedes tend to follow the British ones. I have to be able to relate with my comedy. Gerry Seinfeld once said Comedy is the best way to speak serious. The late Robin Williams once was asked by a German reporter why have they so few comedians and he said “ Well you killed all your funny people.” What’s the plan for 2015? We got two tours beginning and end of year. We will work on a dvd and tv special. So we do big cities first, then smaller ones. If we sell out, then we can always return and do more. Why do think Söder got voted 3rd coolest place in Vogue? Lots of cool people live here. It’s like a suburb but in middle of town, lots of style and stores. It’s not so pretentious, like down town. You can say “Hi!” and get a “Hi!” back. Who would you be most similar to? I have not seen any one similar to mine. My mum told me when I was a kid, ”Don’t be the best, be unique,” If you are the best sooner or later someone will beat you, but if you are unique then.
nobody can beat who you are.” This is perhaps why after 10 years I can still attract people. I think I put a base from the beginning and people know what to expect from my show. Do you interact much with the audience? I do it but not deliberately. I got to improvise, on stage I’m on fire, and always can go out to the audience, and I can always come back to my material. Whatever happens outside the material doesn’t matter. You can be personal, but you got to do it, with a bit of charm. If I offend someone I apologise, but I then continue. I’m not going to harass someone, though it has happened. (more on that later) But if a guy show up in a pink shirt, then sometimes you can help it, before you know it you got 15 jokes about pink shirts Ever done Stand-up abroad? Yes I did well in Oslo last year and sold out a gig, and that was a surprise, they got me, the Stockholm accents and my humour, I didn’t understand them.
Where do you draw the line? The line always changes; a few years ago I made jokes using the word “svartskalan”, people left. Today you can do it, nobody minds. If you got a topic, that’s funny, then go for it. We are not politicians, or sales people. I never talk politics in my show, if I wanted to do that I would be a politician. The time frame of something being funny is crucial. Nobody made just directly after 9/11, but today many people can see the humour of it. How do you do react been heckled? It hasn’t really happened, I have never had a heckler than, They don’t affect me, I got the microphone, the spotlight, and people have paid to come to my show. I’ve challenged people to heckle me but they dare not. A quick comeback and you put them down. I’m confident on stage. I own the stage, people never have the balls. I picked on a guy once for 40 minutes, only cause he was an arrogant shit who messed up a girls act and had really upset her. Coffee Coffee Times Times _ N0 _ N0 1 2014 1 2015

Is Candy Healthy? Could there be health benefits? As long as you work out and mind your teeth, then candy and chocolate is something you can and should enjoy. New studies show it’s our friend! And this city is armed with great candy stores, a good tip, is you will find them close to the cinemas!! Text: Vanessa Stokes
C
andies that primarily consist of peppermint and mint, such as candy canes, have digestive benefits. Peppermint oil can help soothe an upset stomach by creating defense against irritable bowel syndrome and is effective in killing germs.
Mint-flavored gum increases short-term memory, heart rate, and the amount of oxygen in the brain. The correlation between heart rate and oxygen in the brain triggers short-term memory. Chewing gum can also provide a burst of insulin in the anticipation for food. When eaten in moderation, dark chocolate can have health benefits. The cocoa in chocolate can help reduce the risk of heart disease. Vitamins and minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and sodium can be found in chocolate, as well as antioxidants. In a study of approximately 8,000 individuals, candy consumers enjoyed an average of 0.92 years of longer life, with greater consumption of candy not associated with progressively lower mortality. Non-consumers typically ate less red meat and salads, drank more and were more likely to smoke. Mortality was lowest among those consuming candy 1–3 times a month and highest among those consuming candy three or more times a week. The study concluded that one possible explanation for this was the presence of antioxidant phenols in chocolate, but the study could not differentiate between consumption of sugar candy and chocolate in the study!

Remind yourself, ” You are Se The property market is quite busy and people see the value of property increasing, many relocate and want a bigger apartment or house once the kids come along. I didn’t give property selling so much thought until my old apartment was put up for sale and I was shocked how bad it looked on selling day. Text: Noel Sheehy
I
decided I needed to get the advice of someone in the business, not an auctioneer but an Interior Decorator, so here we interview Martha Ibarra to find out the Do’s and Don’ts when selling. What’s the starting point when you decide to sell? If you are selling your House or Apartment remember you are selling a Home. This is the golden rule so many people don’t realize. What happens if people forget this? Well the houses/apartments lack ambience, colour life etc. I would not leave everything to the Auctioneer/Real Estate agent. Sometimes the “homes” can look like clinical institutes; everything is painted white, walls ceilings. And even the furniture is white. Why is this? People think if an apartment is white it looks bigger. The sellers are afraid to spend money and maybe the auctions don’t want to spend money either. What would you do? I would do about 10 different things. And here are just some of them. People when selling need to forget the “cut costs” mentality. Remember speculate to accumulate. By repairing or altering your house/ apartment it can make much more money. If people are unwilling to renovate or spend money on the property they are selling, they are actually losing money. People or in this case the sellers need to see the bigger picture. By spending x amount we can push up the value of our apartment to an extra 100,000.

The apartment I mentioned above is around 70 sq and made just over 3million. How much could you have got it to make if you had a budget to improve it? FIVE Million kr!! How do you transform apartments and houses? I put life in them. I fix the following: Lighting, Colour scheme, Regular and soft furnishings. Every apartment has various strengths and weaknesses. With the right eye you can highlights an apartment or house’s beauty and elegance. Any other tips? People should take pride in their apartments or houses. Old apartments are often very charming. And having an Apartment/House in Stockholm or Gothenburg is great, two wonderful cities, people should need to pay for such a privilege. Feel free to contact Martha Ibarra for advice. homes@coffeetimes.se

Cars- Do You Drive Like You We all know cars release gases harmful to our environment, but by driving carefully you can reduce the damage your car does. Here are some tips on driving to reduce CO² emissions. Text: Noel Sheehy
D
riving style, cold engine, poor car maintenance, rapid acceleration and incorrect tyre pressure all affect fuel consumption adversely. Follow these simple tips and you can reduce your engine’s workload, which means it will burn less fuel and produce less CO²: Starting the Car: Turn the engine on then drive off gently and without delay. This will reduce excessive fuel consumption and pollution. Maintain your car regularly: A properly maintained car will have good engine lubrication, wheel alignment and well-adjusted brakes reducing your fuel consumption. Tyre Pressure: Tyres 0.5 bar below manufacturers recommended pressure increase wear and fuel consumption by 2-3%. Ensure your tyres are at the manufacturers recommended pressure. Reading the road: By watching the roads ahead and anticipating any likely problems, your driving style will become smoother, better controlled and be safer for you and other road users. The rear window demister being on uses 3-5% more fuel. Remember to switch it off when the window is clear. Maintaining your distance: Safe and economical driving requires you to maintain a sufficient distance behind the car in front - a minimum of 10m for every 15km/h speed. This way you can brake and accelerate more smoothly. Saving fuel in town: Avoid over-revving the engine and drive in as high a gear as is suitable to road conditions. Reduce unnecessary drag: Take off unused bike racks or roof boxes and save 15-40%. Use the car’s vents rather than leaving the windows or sun roof open, saving you a further 3-5% Even if you only have to wait 30 seconds, it is more economical to switch the engine off and start it again when necessary. At bends, reducing speed gently and in time and accelerating smoothly when you are halfway through will reduce excessive fuel consumption. Lower speeds are safer, but driving at high speed (over 80km/h and especially over 100km/h) also uses more fuel and causes more pollution.

Sweden is the country with the highest number of single people over 30 in the world. Kids spending every other week at a parents place. If you thought this was the end of romance for the divorced in Sweden then you are mistaken. Life in Sweden is a bit different. Before we get to divorce and kids let’s look how couples meet in the first place. Most Swedish couples from their 20’s up meet at parties. At parties you get the background scup on the person you might be interested in. Is she a slut, is he a player, is she a cougar etc.

& How I Met You. Is there anything more frustrating than being single when all your friends are loved-up? So where do you find the special one? Online, Nightclubs, or a party Text: Mark Gorman Others hook up at Nightclubs and some dating evolves in something more serious. Normally the Nightclub meeting is more a night of passion and forgetting, so thinking you’re going to meet the “one” in a club is naive. This brings us to online dating. Perfect for the shy swede, who loves technology, Instagram and Facebooking. Today in Sweden the big online sites are Match, Edarling and Happy pancake. Happy pancake is free and popular among most people in their 20. There are phone apps but I’m sceptical of these. There are many pros and cons of online dating. First up it’s a fun way to spend a dark lonely night, writing in hope to the “one” It can be exciting, the conversations either online or on the phone before the first date”. Online dating was a great time saver. Why waste time on people who are not interesting to you or vice versa. For the people who believe in love- at– first- sight, I’m not sure what they would think of online dating.
Some tips for online dating and these apply for both him and her: Be honest….If you are 90 kilos, don’t upload pictures of you when you were 60! Pick a relaxing environment in which to meet for the first time. Be safe, meet in a public central place. I know of a girl who was going to go mushroom picking in a forest with a guy who turned out to be a scary freak. Be yourself, you don’t need to brag or bore people too much about your job or how much you make. Guys pay for the meal, girls at least offer to pay half.

The Roma, New Swedes? Text: Leon Smith
The Roma people have many names, Romani people, Beggars, and the controversial name “Gypsy”.
These people are new to Sweden and come mainly from the Balkans and Romania in particular. Here in Sweden they are strategically places outside public areas and line the streets near supermarkets, jingling their cup of coins. These people exist in many countries, and it is estimated there are 12 million worldwide. Of course there are other types of gypsy or itinerant people in the UK and Ireland. But the similarities are uncanny. The main fact to note here is these people are not settlers. Their life is one of a nomadic one. Romania, the source of many of the Roma which have moved to Sweden, was accused to neglecting their Roma population. However I have been told that efforts were made but trying to settle Roma people is impossible and has failed for over 100 years. Romania was warned not to export its social problems, but by banning begging, they technically exported their social problem. I will return to this point shortly! Begging is how the Roma people are supporting themselves in Sweden, so far. And it’s not something any one of us really wants to see but it’s not the end of the world. They are professional beggars and their aim is to look as poor as possible and not be seen on their mobile phones. All the money collected by the group is put together and divided out after the top “King” gets their cut. My fear is will Sweden experience the problems like other countries have, with theft and pick pocketing in particular. The trouble is these people are not registered anywhere so it’s hard to keep track of them. Crimes are often carried out by minors which means they go unprosecuted. A German police man told me of his frustration of finger-printing Roma criminals and seeing how many times they had committed crimes unpunished. Five years ago you would never see warning-signs up in Sweden warning about pickpockets, today they are everywhere in public places. When it comes to Roma people it’s a difficult call. We could send them back to Romania and pressure the Romanian Government (via the EU) to provide for them in proper ”Roma ways”. Surely teach them a non-begging trade so they can contribute to some society. 94

Every Year a Slave? Thinking that some of the goods that we have in our homes might come from the use of forced labor under slave like practices is not a common thing to do before filling up our grocery basket or getting our favorite beauty products, or the latest clothes trends. However there is still a slight possibility that indeed we have acquired a good that has been made under modern day slavery. We are familiar with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; same that established that “all humans are born free, that no one should be held in slavery or servitude and that slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms”. Yet today, estimations by the Walk Free Foundation (2013) indicate that nearly 29.8 million people, the majority of them women and children, are living under modern day slavery. Despite that modern day slavery is now recognized as a worldwide aggression to human rights, regions such as Asia and Africa host 76% of people living under slave likepractices and countries in these regions tend to be the origin, transit and in some extent the destinations of the victims, however the phenomena is worldwide and can be found in every country in the world. Extreme poverty, lack of education, economic disparities and the need to achieve a better future become trigger factors for the most vulnerable to be trapped in these criminal rings and become a victim of human trafficking, dragging people to slave like practices. The supply and demand from diverse illicit and licit economic sectors creates an atmosphere and a need for cheap human labor,

Text: Sol Torres however not all the activities move in the illegal rings; more and more economic activities are to be found slave like-practices within their supply chain, where employers might use different means of coercion to keep a person under forced labor. According to the International Labor Organization, ILO, almost 21 million people are victims of forced labor, where 19 million victims are exploited by private individuals or enterprises and over 2 million by the state or rebel groups. The most vulnerable group are women and girls which are often found under forced sexual exploitation; other potential sectors of forced labor are domestic work, agriculture, construction, manufacturing, fishing, garments, among others. The generations of profit are estimated to figure US$150 billion per year. Modern day slavery is a global phenomenonaffecting women, man and children around the world. The awareness of this problem creates a more comprehensive way to fight against the crime. It’s important, that consumers and society to take a closer look at the products that we buy and make sure that the companies are not using slave like conditions under their supply chain. We should get involved in international campaigns to suppress all forms of slavery, or just paying special attention to the origin of the products we buy… taking small steps can make a big difference!

Sweden Searching for Sweden finds itself in Group G for the European Cup qualification. But can Zlatan inspire the team to qualify this time? Text: Noel Sheehy
Having failed to qualify for the World Cup finals in Brazil, the pressure is on Sweden and Head Coach Erik Hamrén and Asst coach Marcus Allbäck. The fact that Portugal, who beat Sweden in the playoffs for the World Cup were so weak in Brazil, eyebrows were raised. If Portugal were bad where does that leave Sweden? And like Portugal Sweden have a big reliance on one player. Many said that the playoff game was more Ronaldo v’s Zlatan than Portugal v’s Sweden. Group G is no easy group Sweden will need to be firing on all cylinders as they tackle some heavy weights Russia managed by Fabio Capello (ranked 23) and Austria(ranked 39). While Montenegro (ranked 43) will be no pushovers, there are easy games include Moldova (ranked 105) and minnows Liechtenstein (ranked 105). Sweden by the way are ranked 32 in the FIFA world rankings. No player is more crucial to Sweden’s chances of qualifying than Zlatan Ibrahimović. The player best described as a number 10 in the body of a Number 9. He has defied the odds and got even better with age. If you thought his move to France(Club PSG) was like early retirement you were wrong. Since moving to PSG he has scored 61 goals in 70 matches.

r the Football G Spot
Right now Sweden is suffering a bit of a talent drain, and everybody is asking where is the next Zlatan Ibrahimović. Zlatan’s importance to the team was highlighted in September when he scored his 50th international goal in a 2–0 friendly match victory over Estonia, making him the Swedish national team’s all-time leading goal scorer. Earlier in the same match, he equalled Sven Rydell’s record of 49 by scoring the opening goal. On 8 September, he made his 100th appearance for Sweden in a UEFA Euro 2016 qualifier against Austria at the Ernst Happel Stadion in Vienna. The matched ended 1-1, a valuable away point for Sweden. Let’s hope Zlatan hangs around for a few more years yet!

One Hell of a Chef
Easily, the most popular Chef on the planet, his passion is there for all to see. Here we take a quick look at Gordon Ramsay and his rise to becoming one hell of a chef. Text: Noel Sheehy Gordon has also become a TV star with shows such as; Gordon Behind Bars, Hell’s Kitchen and Master Chef US etc. He is also a published author of a number of books, many of which have become bestsellers around the world, most notably his autobiography, Roasting in Hell’s Kitchen. Ramsay’s reputation is built upon his goal of culinary perfection. Since the airing of Boiling Point which followed Ramsay’s quest of earning three Michelin stars, the chef has also become infamous for his fiery temper and use of expletives. British Chef Gordon was brought up in in England. With an injury prematurely putting an end to any hopes of a promising career in football, he went back to college to complete a course in hotel management. His dedication and natural talent led him to train with some of the world’s leading chefs, such as Albert Roux and Marco Pierre White in London, and Guy Savoy and Joël Robuchon in France. Climbing the ropes! In 1993 Gordon became chef of Aubergine in London, which within three years, was awarded two Michelin stars. In 1998, at the age of 31, he set up his first wholly owned and namesake restaurant, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, which quickly received the most prestigious accolade in the culinary world – three Michelin stars. Today, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay is London’s longest-running restaurant to hold this award, and Ramsay is one of only four chefs in the UK to maintain three stars. Now internationally renowned, Gordon has opened a string of successful restaurants across the globe, from the UK to Italy to the United States and holds 7 Michelin stars. The Group continues to grow with two ventures in Doha, Qatar opened in 2012; a total of three restaurants in Las Vegas Gordon Ramsay Steak at Paris, GR Pub and Grill at Caesars Palace and GR BurGR at Planet Hollywood, also in 2012 and most recently in London Union Street Café in London’s Borough market (2013) and London House in Battersea this year. 102 Coffee Times _ N0 1 2015
Ramsay’s ferocious temper has contributed to his media appeal. His frequent loss of his temper and his harsh critiques, notably when he picks on something other than one’s cooking abilities, such as calling someone a “chunky monkey.” He maintains that such behaviour within the kitchen is necessary and demonstrates passion. Although Ramsay often mocks the French, one of his most trusted maîtres d, Jean-Baptiste Requien is French. Ramsay has been criticised for his frequent use of profanity on his programmes, by British celebrity cook Delia Smith. In his autobiography, Ramsay himself said he was unaware of the extent of his swearing until he watched an episode of Boiling Point. While he stated he did not have a problem with it, “Mum was appalled”. On the second series of The F Word, Ramsay showed a softened stance on vegetarianism after learning about intensive pig farming practices including castration and tail docking. On the programme, Ramsay commented, “It’s enough to make anyone turn fucking vegetarian, for God’s sake. And I’ve always sort of knocked vegetarians and vegans for missing out on the most amazing flavour you can get from meat. But you can see why so many people change instantly.” Last but not least he lives with his wife, Tana and four children, along with their bulldog Rumpole and two cats. He divides his time between Los Angeles and South London.

Text: Noel Sheehy How long have you been working in the industry? I have trained with fitness for 10 years, through a variety of sports. I started in Gothenburg and now I’ve been in Stockholm for some years. I followed British style training. Describe your work? I work in a few gyms where my clients are members. I also train people in their homes, as I have my own business. I train 4-6 clients per day, Monday to Friday. And I work with all sorts of people young, old male female. I train most with cross fit, which is most particularly popular with women, as you train the whole body without using a machine. What does the trainer need to know about our health before we start training? Before we start training I need to know if you have Asthma, what’s your blood pressure. I must measure your weight, as muscle is heavier than fat, I measure chest, arms, and under stomach, waist, previous Injuries, the lifestyle. Office people can have the worst bodies as they sit still on the computer with bad posture.
Condition Training, you need interval training, which means, you run 40 minutes. Take 5 minutes to warm up. You increase speed every, 5 minutes, you walk, for 5 minutes, then you jog for 5 minutes, During these 5 minute blocks you have 30 second breaks. After this you spend 10 minutes stretching. How important is training and what you eat? I believe it’s 50/50 from my own experience. When I train people, I advise them on diet, eat carbs 90minutes before. Carbs build muscles. In the evening you should eat protein, never carbs. Stretch to avoid training pain, A training time is 1 hour, 5 minutes warm up, 40 minutes you train, 10 minutes stretch. Banana, and apples should be eaten before training, an apple is more filling that a Banana.
What training in particular do you offer your clients? I offer them Spot Training where I train every muscle in your body. Does it matter if you are trying to lose weight or just gain condition? Which training for which of these? Yes these are two separate type of training, if you are trying to burn fat, you do Effective Training, like Body Pump, which is high tempo. 106

Music,Listen To This! Text: Mark Roberton
Music “the food of love” takes a particular importance in satiating our senses. Some have credited the medium as affecting the mood, blood pressure, well-being, esteem and even physical health! It can keep us sane sometimes, or colour our spare time. With the advent and ease of portable music, just about everyone now has access to sound therapy! This great capital city provides an excellent atmosphere and backdrop - and we can create our own daily life ‘theme’, more personal than any film production. However you roll, instant nostalgia is something you choose with your own soundtrack. Moreover, Stockholm is a wonderful city for cultivating, providing and accessing the BEST available music to our ears. If anyone suggests that “there’s no new music worthy of attention these days” is just not listening! How to find your favourite genres, discover new artists, see and hear them up-close and personal is simpler for we city-dwellers, indeed there are some music talents that walk among us! But....do some of us wait until other nations ‘discover’ local musicians? Yes - admit it - you are guilty of not seeing the beauty in our easily accessible music until it’s celebrated and presented with enthusiasm from USA or Britain. We all know First Aid Kit by now, and steadily gaining long-deserved praise are Weeping Willows, Lykke Li, and Melissa Horn. Kent, Hellacopters and Opeth have some international renown, and bursting out imminently are Then Comes Silence with 2 cool albums released in quick succession (check Youtube for their excellent self-produced videos!), also Entombed, Les Big Byrd, Safari Season, and for hip-hop fans there’s Petter. Catch any of them live in small venues, for one day you could be hustling to pay high ticket prices with the other enlightened fans. How to hear these aural treasures? Easy! - apart from the more obvious Spotify and Youtube - if you take some time out to enjoy browsing or research, there are some outstanding record stores where cds and lps are sold by knowledgeable people who love to recommend the classic or the newest music. I’ll spend an hour or two a week in ‘music stores. Simple research, for the enhancing and exciting for one of the senses! 108

Cocktails Colours Text: Noel Sheehy
Is there anything more refreshing than a nice cocktail? And apart from the taste it can look amazing also! Text: Noel Sheehy Cocktails are the most unique drinks there are. One wrong ingredient or ingredient you don’t like adn the taste is ruined. Alternativley the joy of finding a new taste, or a taste you can’t name is thrilling.
much fruit juice, egg or cream. It should be dry, with sufficient alcoholic flavor, yet smooth and pleasing to the palate. It should be pleasing to the eye and well-iced.
We should stress that the drink will never be any better than the quality of the cheapest ingredient in it, and hence he stresses constantly the need for the highest quality spirits, liqueurs, cordials, and modifiers (fresh squeezed lemons, etc.). We also repeatedly stress that a cocktail, in the classic sense (a before-dinner drink) should have no more than the slightest touch of sweetness to it, and deplore the use of drinks like the Brandy Alexander as preprandial cocktails, as they dull rather than sharpen the appetite.
Popular Cocktails:
We do not denigrate sweet drinks as such, but rather point out that they are excellent after dinner or mid-afternoon drinks accompanying cake or chocolate cookies, but they are anathema as a “cocktail” before a large meal.
Manhattan- 5 parts American whiskey,1 part Italian (sweet) vermouth dash of Angostura bitters to each drink. Stir with ice, strain into a cocktail glass and serve garnished with a maraschino cherry.
Follow these basic principles for a quality cocktail and you can’t go wrong: It should be made from good-quality, high-proof liquors. It should whet rather than dull the appetite. Thus, it should never be sweet or syrupy, or contain too
Martini- 7 parts English gin,1 part French (dry) vermouth. Stir with ice, strain into a cocktail glass, twist lemon peel over the top and serve garnished with an olive, preferably one stuffed with any kind of nut.
