Welcome Readers! Here is our third Guidebook for Gamla Stan, the best part of Stockholm. I have been fascinated with Gamla Stan or “The Old Town” since I first visited it many years ago. It’s got a magical feel to it and is full of charm. I never get tired of its beautiful streets whatever the weather. Gamla Stan is a must see part of Stockholm, so whether you are in town for a day or a week make sure to take it all in, the medieval streets, the old architecture, the tourist stores and the cosy restaurants. I would also recommend a tour so you don’t miss out on the full story of Gamla Stan. A quick tips is wear comfortable shoes. If you are feeling peckish, you’ve come to the right spot with 100 restaurants in the area, and even and old confectionary making store. There are 4 museums there too! We hope this Guidebook helps you enjoy your experience of Gamla Stan. Enjoy the read.

History -The 1520 Massacre The Stockholm Bloodbath took place as the result of a successful invasion of Sweden by Danish forces under the command of King Christian II. The bloodbath itself was a series of events taking place between 7th November and 9th November 1520. Around 92 people, mostly nobility and clergy supporting the Sture party were executed, despite a promise by King Christian for general amnesty. The Build upOn 7th November, the events of the Stockholm bloodbath began to unfold. On the evening of that day, Christian summoned many Swedish leaders to a private conference at the palace. At dusk on 8th November, Danish soldiers, with lanterns and torches, entered a great hall of the royal palace and took away several noble guests. Later in the evening, many others of the king’s guests were imprisoned. All these people had previously been marked down on Archbishop Trolle’s proscription list. The following day, 9th November, a council, headed by archbishop Trolle, sentenced the proscribed to death for being heretics.

8

However many of them were also leading men of the Sture party and thus potential opponents of the Danish kings. At noon, the anti-unionist bishops of Skara and Strängnäs were led out into the great square and beheaded. 14 noblemen, three burgomasters, 14 town councillors and about 20 common citizens of Stockholm were then hanged or decapitated. The executions continued throughout the following day (10th November). According to the chief executioner Jörgen Homuth 82 people were executed. It is said that Christian also took revenge on Sten Sture’s body, having it dug up and burnt, as well as the body of his little child. Sture’s widow Dame Kristina, and many other noble Swedish ladies, were sent as prisoners to Denmark. What was the reason behind the massacre? The Stockholm Bloodbath was a consequence of conflict between Swedish pro-unionists (in favour of the Kalmar Union, then dominated by Denmark) and anti-unionists (supporters of Swedish independence), and also between the anti-unionists and the Danish aristocracy,

Museums- The Royal Palace This is one of Europe’s largest and most dynamic palaces. The Royal Palace of Stockholm is His Majesty The King’s official residence and is also the setting for most of the monarchy’s official receptions. The palace is a daily place of work for both King and Queen as well as for the various departments that make up the Royal Court. This combination of royal residence, workplace and culture-historical monument open year round to visitors makes the Royal Palace of Stockholm unique amongst Europe’s royal residences. The palace is built in baroque style by the architect Nicodemus Tessin and is formed as a Roman palace. The palace has more than 600 rooms divided between seven floors with a state apartment facing the city and smaller living rooms facing the inner courtyard. The palace contains many interesting things to see. In addition to the Royal Apartments there are three museums steeped in regal history: the Treasury with the regalia, the Tre Kronor Museum that portrays the palaces medieval history and Gustav III’s Museum of Antiquities. See respective tourist destination at the palace in the left-hand menu for more information.

The Monarchy in Sweden Sweden’s King is Carl XVI Gustaf. The Swedish monarchy rests on traditions dating back more than a 1000-years. We do not know who the first kings of Sweden were. Most probably they were leaders of strong standing families. Only at the end of the 1200s it could be constituted that there was a central power, consisting of a king and his counsel. The Vasa King Gustav Vasa is the first King in Swedish history of whose life we have a clear view. He was elected King on June 6, 1523. During Vasa’s reign the right to inherit the Swedish crown was ratified through so called succession agreements. The Royal Family The Swedish Royal Family consists of King Carl XVI Gustaf, born 1946, Queen Silvia, born 1943, Crown Princess Victoria, born 1977, Prince Daniel, born 1973, Princess Estelle, born 2012, Prince Carl Philip, born 1979, Princess Madeleine, born 1982, married to Mr Christopher O’Neill, born 1974, Princess Leonore, born 2014. In addition to the members of the Royal Family, the Swedish Royal Court also includes Princess Birgitta, born 1937, married to Prince Johann Georg of Hohenzollern. Text: Kungliga Slottet

Pasta dishes with use of tomato are spread in all Italy. Italians like their ingredients fresh and subtly seasoned and spiced. In Northern Italy though there are many kinds of stuffed pasta, polenta and risotto are equally popular if not more so. Ligurian ingredients include several types of fish and seafood dishes; basil (found in pesto), nuts and olive oil are very common. In Emilia-Romagna, common ingredients include ham (prosciutto), sausage (cotechino), different sorts of salami, truffles, grana, Parmigiano-Reggiano, and tomatoes.

16

Italian cuisine is also well known (and well regarded) for its use of a diverse variety of pasta. Pasta include noodles in various lengths, widths and shapes. Distinguished on shapes they are named penne, maccheroni, spaghetti, linguine, fusilli, lasagne and many more varieties that are filled with other ingredients like ravioli and tortellini. The word pasta is also used to refer to dishes in which pasta products are a primary ingredient. It is usually served with sauce. There are hundreds of different shapes of pasta with at least locally recognized names. Examples include spaghetti (thin rods), rigatoni (tubes or cylinders), fusilli (swirls), and lasagne (sheets). Dumplings, like gnocchi (made with potatoes or pumpkin) and noodles like spätzle, are sometimes considered pasta. They are both traditional in parts of Italy.

Best Swedish Dining

Swedish cuisine could be described as centered around cultured dairy products, crisp and soft (often sugared) breads, berries and stone fruits, beef, chicken, lamb, pork, eggs, and seafood. Potatoes are often served as a side dish, often boiled. Swedish cuisine has a huge variety of breads of different shapes and sizes, made of rye, wheat, oat, white, dark, sourdough, and whole grain, and including flatbreads and crispbreads. There are many sweetened bread types and some use spices. Many meat dishes, especially meatballs, are served with lingonberry jam. Fruit soups with high viscosity, like rose hip soup and blueberry soup (blåbärssoppa) served hot or cold, are typical of Swedish cuisine. Butter and margarine are the primary fat sources, although olive oil is becoming more popular.

18

Sweden’s pastry tradition features a variety of yeast buns, cookies, biscuits and cakes; many of them are in a very sugary style and often eaten with coffee (fika). Husmanskost Swedish husmanskost denotes traditional Swedish dishes with local ingredients, the classical everyday Swedish cuisine. The word husmanskost stems from husman, meaning ‘house owner’ (without associated land), and the term was originally used for most kinds of simple countryside food outside of towns. Genuine Swedish husmanskost used predominantly local ingredients such as pork in all forms, fish, cereals, milk, potato, root vegetables, cabbage, onions, apples, berries etc.; beef and lamb were used more sparingly. Husmanskost has undergone a renaissance during the last decades as well known chefs, , have presented modernised variants.

Best Music & Clubs In Stockholm the music scene come alive at night, often live bands playing in cellars to eager crowds. Notice all the vinyl stores in the old town. I bet you thought the Volvo car or Ikea was Sweden’s biggest export, believe it or not but Music is Sweden biggest export and its worth big bucks. Sweden has a great love of music, everything from folk music to modern rock or pop. Here is a look at the Pop scene and its connection to the Eurovision. ABBA is the best-known popular music band from Sweden, and the only one that ranks among the best-known in the world. With ABBA, Sweden entered into a new era, in which Swedish pop music gained international prominence after winning the Eurovision Song Contest 1974. They sold a total of 380 million records around the world. After ABBA’s win Sweden has won the contest a further five times: 1984 with Herreys, 1991 with Carola, 1999 with Charlotte Nilsson, 2012 with Loreen and 2015 with Måns Zelmerlöw, making them the country with the second-highest number of wins behind Ireland. Some of the most successful post-ABBA popular music artists from Sweden are Europe, Roxette, The Wannadies, Ace of Base, Bubbles, Kent, Army of Lovers, Leila, Robyn, The Cardigans, Alcazar,

Alcazar, A number of renowned rock and pop-oriented artists have come out of the country in recent years, including Loreen, Eskobar, The Sounds, The Hives, Hardcore Superstar, Millencolin, The Hellacopters, The Ark, Infinite Mass. Such has been the success of music abroad that clubs specializing in Swedish music have sprung up in major cities like Berlin, Barcelona and London. Swedish chart toppers Kent are also often regarded as a pop band based on the variety of sounds found on their various albums. The Swedish songwriter Max Martin, as well as his late mentor Denniz Pop, is renowned for writing songs for Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears. The most successful world class rock band to come out of Sweden (and Scandinavia as a whole) has been the band called Europe. They formed in 1979, and went on to achieve huge international success during the 1980s, and continue to release successful albums over 20 years later. Europe best known with their song The Final Countdown. While rock is not as widespread in Sweden as Pop or Metal are, there are some very interesting acts. Worth mentioning are The Hellacopters, who have just ended a critically acclaimed 15-year career. They are also claimed to be “Sweden’s loudest export”.

Best Beer & Bars Gamla stan has plenty of good bars for beer enthusiasts. It doesn’t matter if you are a picky old fashion beer drinker or a Hipster looking for the newest wackiest beer. And luckily the bar staff generally know their beers quite well, so asking for a nice Pilsner won’t take long to solve. In the past, Beer selections in Sweden were limited to Swedish Breweries. Luckily today it has all changed as beer from all over the world has made its way to most Bars. The changes in the Bar trade over the last 5 years are incredible. I have spent many hours “studying” bars in Sweden. Swedish Beer traditionally has never been rated overseas, where strong brewing traditions had spoiled tourists for choice. Now it’s changing as international influence and Swedish home brewers are gaining more influences on brewing here in Sweden.

Instead of ordering a “Storstark” which is the cheap beer, Bar guests are asking for imported beer or Swedish Micro-brewed beer. Of course the large Swedish Brewers are making innovations also. Education and pride in their work is another aspect you can see in Swedish bars. It’s lovely to get information on the guest beers for example. In terms of tastes, Hoppy (IPA) and Bitter Beer/Ale are popular with the modern drinkers, though the lagers, the Czech in particular are still quite popular. Swedish Microbreweries have transformed Beer drinking in Sweden in the last few years. They have done this so such an extent that the major Brewers are sitting up and taking notice. The message has been clear- The Swedish consumer wants better beer, tastier beer and more variety!

Köpmangatan

This Swedish names means “The Merchant Street” and rumour has it that it’s the oldest street in Gamla stan, and maybe even Stockholm. A parallel street to Trädgårdsgatan, it is stretching from the central square Stortorget to Köpmantorget, intercepted by Trädgårdstvärgränd, Skeppar Olofs Gränd, Peder Fredags Gränd, Själagårdsgatan, Staffan Sasses Gränd, Baggensgatan, and Bollhusgränd. It’s not a wide street like the others so it’s one you have to keep an eye out for, definitely worth a visit. Today the street has many charming little stores, including antiques, handcraft stores, jewellery, amber and many other fascinating stores. On my last visit there I saw a collection of swords, some over 200 years old. Many tourists enjoy it as it’s less crowded than the main streets and yet it’s central reaching off Stortorget.

26

It is a street many photographers like to shoot as it looks so authentic, with its glorious buildings from the past and its narrow street, originally designed for horses and carts, carrying goods to market. The Historic origin Köpmangatan was mentioned in Latin in 1323 as in medio vici dicti køpmannagatu (“on the street called køpmannagatu”), the street served the merchants of Stockholm during the Middle Ages, and was the main connection between Stortorget and the fish market outside the eastern wall. One of the city’s medieval gates, Köpmanporten (“The Merchant’s Gate”), was once found in the eastern end of the street, until its demolition in 1685 called Köpmanvalvet called the (“The Merchant’s Vault”), which was a vault stretching across the street.
