shortages existing in the current healthcare system. In India, the healthcare infrastructure constitutes about 70 per cent of the overall sectoral expenditure and this highlights the need for fast and efficient healthcare infrastructure in India.

This health centre has been built record time of 3 months using the novel prefabrication technology. This technology will help the state not only strengthen its infrastructure facilities but also help showcase its efforts of bringing down the carbon footprint and adoption of environmental-friendly technologies.

The use of prefabrication technology in comparison with the conventional methods of construction brings in savings to the tune of 50 per cent while it also helps cutting down the carbon footprint. The savings also constitute the terms of construction in all terrain and weather conditions.

This Mehkar Health Centre will serve as a model infrastructure to the country that is earnestly looking forward to giving strong impetus on development of its much-needed rural infrastructure as well as cut down its carbon footprint.

ACME has used prefabrication technology to commission various state-of-the-art infrastructure, including commercial buildings, high-altitude accommodation units and cold-storage infrastructure.

CDC, the UK’s development finance institution (DFI), is making a $25 million direct investment in Pristine Logistics, a growing Indian company that develops and operates vital infrastructure to transport and handle railway freight in rural and under-served parts of the country. Pristine Logistics is developing, constructing and operating greenfield rail freight terminals across northern, central and eastern India, where infrastructure is important for economic growth. The terminals provide handling, warehousing and transport services for businesses using the Indian Railways network for freight transport. The company also plans to develop a food park in Bihar to handle and process agricultural products, bringing market connectivity to the region. Commenting on the announcement, Rajnish Kumar, Director, Pristine Logistics, said, “CDC is a natural investment partner for us and this development will unlock the full potential of Pristine.” The food park in Bihar will create a further 1,800 jobs. The lack of fast, reliable and temperature-controlled transportation means that many Bihar farmers cannot bring their produce to market. The food park will bring much-needed food processing, storage and modern transport services to local farming communities. CDC will also support Pristine Logistics as the company develops its procedures around environmental and social policies. In this way, CDC can contribute to the sustainable development of the company and build management capability in this field.

The X-Factors The factors that have been governing the construction and infrastructure industry in India

Indian construction and infrastructure industry, except for the past 2 years, has consistently seen a double-digit growth. The outlook for the construction sector appears to be very strong. The next couple of months should kick-start the process where after the growth should start. The industry is forecast to grow at 7-8 per cent each year over the next decade. The growth in Indian construction and infrastructure industry will vary in terms of the industries, and the industry sentiments are driven by various factors. Here are the major factors that have been governing the construction and infrastructure industry:

ers

ary

Modified government The biggest factor is the government’s confidence to drive economic growth and the reforms. The new government’s policies are definitely working in industry’s favour with emphasis on development. The “Make in India” is one such initiative that will promote inclusive growth and provide employment opportunities to many.

“The current policies of the Indian Government are definitely encouraging the investors in infrastructure and construction projects from both domestic as well as overseas private capital,” opines Anjan Dutta Roy, Vice President, Tiger Steel India. “Liberalisation of policies and deliberate strategies from the Government of India in promoting infrastructure spells opportunity for EPC organisations, e.g. roads and highways, ports, airports, railways and power.” The new government has started putting in place the blueprint to execute a massive infrastructure upgrade which includes smart cities and industrial corridors

Cover Story network, revamping trains and modernising ports,” says. The government is planning a multi-billion dollar infrastructure fund to push investments. Four ministries — Civil Aviation, Railways, Road and Shipping — have been asked to work together. This will improve coordination and avoid delays in decision making. The government is all set to roll out ` 2 lakh crore worth of infrastructure projects this year. Undoubtedly, the focus should be on expediting stalled infrastructure projects and resolve iron and coal mining issues. These measures must combine with reforms in environment issues, land acquisition, taxation, labour and speedy clearances of project approvals.

connecting different parts of India. It is estimated that the projects will cost nearly $1 trillion over the next 5 years and the government of India will be floating an infrastructure investment trust and a realty investment trust as financial instruments with tax rebates to fund this development. The government is committed to delivering growth, and for doing so it needs to have infrastructure at place. “The new government’s 10-year plan to improve infrastructure includes building smaller airports in towns, a high-sped train

Expert view An increase in domestic demand created by an urbanising population and continued growth and development will benefit the entire industrial sector.

Ramesh Tipirneni, Country Manager, Caterpillar India

“With the backdrop of active new government initiatives, friendly policies and rising investment trends in the sector, the Indian construction sector offers promising growth trends and opportunities,” explains P V Rao, Managing Director, PEBS Pennar. “The new government has initiated innumerable initiatives to lift the sector from its current dormant conditions.” Openness to Public Private Partnership The government’s openness towards the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model deserves credit too. It is very significant as this industry requires huge amount of investment which would require help from the private firms in the country as well as outside. The private sector has invested $225 billion in India’s infrastructure projects between 2007 and 2012, much of it through PPPs.

platform for growth. With more people moving into the cities, increasing industrialisation and change in food consumption pattern, every industry from manufacturing to processing and last mile delivery promise for consumer satisfaction will dictate the future of the segment. About 590 million people will live in cities by 2030 and account for 70 per cent of Indian GDP. About 70 per cent of the infrastructure that India needs has still not been constructed. “As per estimates, by 2030, there will be about 10 billion square meters of constructed homes, hospitals and other buildings,” says Kamal Singh, Vice President, Power Electronics Division, Danfoss India. “In fact, according to a study by US Department of Energy, the country doubled its floor space between 2001 and 2005 and is expected to add 35 billion sq. metres of new buildings by 2050.” Even Ramesh Tipirneni, Country Manager, Caterpillar India, thinks the same. He remarks, “An increase in domestic demand created by an urbanising population and continued growth and development will benefit the entire industrial sector.” GDP growth The growth of Indian economy slipped from 10.5 per cent in 2010 to 4.8 per cent in 2013. In the past few years, delayed decision making has led to negative growth and sentiment. Lack of quick decision making and clearances from land acquisition and environment has brought the wheels to a near standstill.

According to Mr Rao, “The 12th Plan, which started in 2013 looks set to include $1 trillion for infra development, with around 50 per cent of this likely to come from private funds.”

The Indian economy, however, is going underway of gradual recovery. The nation is expected to clock a GDP growth of 5.5 per cent in the current fiscal and 6.6 per cent in FY16.

The recent interest shown by countries like Singapore, France, Dubai and Russia to invest in the smart city project and other projects is a meaningful step in that direction.

According to Dr S. P. Pandey, Deputy Executive Director, Quality Management and R&D, Dalmia Bharat Ltd., “The total construction market in India for FY14 was $157 billion, an increase of $4 billion over FY13. Infrastructure accounts for 49 per cent, housing and real estate 42 per cent and industrial projects 9 per cent. Industrial construction is contributed by expansion projects from various manufacturing sectors.”

Expert view The ‘Make in India’ is one such initiative that will promote inclusive growth and provide employment opportunities to many.

J. C. Sharma, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Sobha Ltd.

“Emergence of India as a key investment area is opening up rather enriching avenues for the industry,” says Sunil MK, Head AEC, Autodesk, India and SAARC. “Indian construction market is expected to be the world’s third largest by 2020 doubling to $ 649.5 billion by 2020 from $ 360 billion in 2010.” The time has come for India to gear up to the make the best of the impending golden era of the Indian economy. ‘Make In India’ initiative To attract investments from businesses around the world as well as strengthen India’s economy. The mission, no doubt, would enforce secondary and tertiary sector, boost the national economy, convert India to a self-reliant country and give the Indian economy global recognition. “The ‘Make in India’ is one such initiative that will promote inclusive growth and provide employment opportunities to many,” explains J. C. Sharma, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Sobha Ltd. “The new government’s policies are definitely working in industry’s favour with emphasis on development.”

led government has already showcased the much-talked initiative in Davos.

are keen to participate in India’s growth story by holding stakes on a long-term basis.

Youth demographic India has an unrivalled youth demographic. Nearly two-thirds of Indians are under 35 and half are under 25. By 2020, India will be the youngest nation in the world. With such a big number of its population under the age of 35, India today boasts one of the largest available workforces in the world.

Mr Kalantri adds, “The government has eased foreign investment rules to make it easier for investors to enter the markets. The new rules proposed include reducing the builtup area requirement for FDI in construction projects to 20,000 sq. metres from 50,000 sq. metres. The minimum capital requirement has also been reduced to $5 million from $10 million. The new rules will make it easier for the government to attract investments to build smart cities and affordable homes in the country. It is also likely to improve the dismal infrastructure in Asia’s third largest economy.”

The TeamLease Indian Labor Report suggests that 300 million people will enter the workforce by 2025. Most important, 25 per cent of the world’s skilled workers will be Indians. This young workforce is going to drive and impact the country and organizations’ strategy in years to come. Exploding super rich population India is also the home to 1.17 lakh ultrahigh net worth individuals, and these super-rich people are growing their wealth exponentially. India’s super rich are not only getting richer but doing it faster than most Asian countries. Between 2013 and 2014, the number of ultra-high net worth individuals in India grew by 9.49 per cent. This factor will surely augur well for the economy and the real estate market.

Infrastructure and construction industry, no doubt, hold massive potential in India. The confidence behind the promise comes from the fact that infrastructure and construction industry has witnessed exponential growth in the past and it is a part of the 5-year plan. “The proposed increase in allocation in the 12th Plan (2012-2017) will translate into a healthy business for construction companies,” explains Dr Pandey. “According to a technical committee set up by the Ministry of Housing & Poverty Alleviation, the total provides a big investment opportunity.”

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) As per UNCTAD reports, India is being rated the second most attractive location (after China) for global FDI. In order to increase FDI inflows, particularly with a view to catalysing investment and enhancing infrastructure, the Indian Government has also introduced significant policy reforms. There are global players and investors who

The X-Factor comes from the fact that it will spearhead the growth in India, and rest everything will be secondary or consequential. With the new government in place, some of the bottlenecks affecting these projects are being taken care of. With more funding for the sector and a favourable business climate for investments, the sector is expected to take off. n

Since 25 September, 2014, PM Narendra Modi has been taking every possible step to make this mission a soaring success. To push the “Make in India” initiative to the global level, PM Modi even plans to pitch India as a manufacturing destination at the upcoming World International Fair in Hannover, Germany. In the global event, our prime minister to showcase India as a business friendly destination. The Modi-

“Today, architects in India fill the gap in the marketplace as our nation turns aspirational,” says Architect Sheila Sri Prakash, Founder and Chief Architect, Shilpa Architects Planners Designers Pvt. Ltd.

Architecture is ultimately about people Year 2014 was filled with eventful and joyous moments for Architect Sheila Sri Prakash. Her firm marked its maiden commission in Africa, and she made her first documentary short film about the Tanjavur Brihadeeswara Temple and its magnificent architecture. In an exclusive interview with ACE Update, she talks about her influence and what helps her remain humbled and inspired.

Architecture and India Post-independence India witnessed predominantly cost-centric construction. While the emphasis of architecture and design in India historically set the standard of the world, the post-independence mindset in India generally considered high-quality architecture as a “cost” as opposed to a “value multiplier”. It was an uphill battle for the profession in India in the past 60 years. Today, architects in India fill the gap in the marketplace as our nation turns aspirational. The acceptance of architecture in the next 5 years will depend heavily on the quality of execution and the business return on investment of architecture. The

architecture profession needs to show the business community that good design is good business, which has been demonstrated undeniably in developed markets. To reach the potential for the profession in India and to evolve truly distinctive design philosophies, it is paramount that India raises the capacity, as well as the quality, of undergraduate and graduate level education. Adding growth The growth in the market has opened tremendous opportunity and complexities. Shilpa Architects Planners and Designers is looking at specific geographies as it consolidates its operations. Architecture is unfortunately a relatively non-scalable business. Its focus at the company is to improve efficiency in the design process through home-grown technologies, to enhance the output of its team without expanding its headcount. The growth in the marketplace in terms of scale of projects lends itself to such organisational scalability. X-Factors Architecture is ultimately about people.

Reciprocity remains a key X-Factor. Reciprocity is essentially a people-centric approach to architecture that is inclusive of a multitude of stakeholders. This is a process that will deliver solutions that are aligned with the long-term interest of our country and our world. Another X-Factor, that Architect Sheila Sri Prakash alluded to before, is a clear methodology of peer-reviewed case studies, to measure the business impact of architecture. This can help influencers and decision makers understand the ROI of good design. Achievements in 2014 The previous year marked her firm’s maiden commission in Africa. infrastructure and fascinating from the perspective of its people, distinctive cultures, and rich natural resources. Architect Sheila is personally excited about the project that they are planning in Accra, Ghana. Year 2014 was also the year she made her first documentary short film about the Tanjavur Brihadeeswara Temple and its magnificent architecture. As she continues her restoration work on this UNESCO World Heritage Monument, she never ceases to remain humbled and inspired by the incredible prowess and intuitions of designers from ancient India.

Expectations in 2015 In the year ahead, Shilpa Architects Planners Designers aims to enhance its portfolio of projects by strategically focusing its efforts on winning marquee commissions. There are considerable expectations among architects about opportunities available for Indian professionals to participate in the new urban initiatives proposed by the government. The investment in creating smart cities also raises the expectations for participation in the residential, commercial, hospitality and educational opportunities. n swimming pool

“I think architects will have the greatest influence, with architecture offering enormous challenges and opportunities to design environments. Materials are getting smaller, lighter and stronger, and we can do more with less,” remarks Architect Sabeena Khanna, Studio K.I.A.

Beyond building a building Italian Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano once said, “Good architecture is intentioned. It touches the people who use it and live in it.” Architecture to some is an art. Architecture to some is an inhabited sculpture, a frozen music while to others, it is a fluid poetry. In an exclusive interview with ACE Update, Ar. Sabeena Khanna shares why architecture is an ever-encompassing feeling. Architecture and India India is the cradle of human race. Ancient India offers finest examples of world’s first planned cities: Mohenjo-daro and Harappa (3000 BC) complete with a sanitation system in place. World’s oldest university in Takshshila (700 BC) and world’s oldest dam in Kallanai came to be in India.

Architectural education is very diverse which prepares a professional for a diaspora of disciplines. The role of an architect today is beyond “building a building” offering a kaleidoscope of opportunities in the fields of landscape, interiors, lighting, set and stage design, public art, installation design, design of public space, brand design, community consultation, research and urban design — where the scope is limitless. Likewise, architecture and design are gaining acceptance today with the profession attaining a commanding stature. Offering comprehensive and a multitude of services as a one-stop shop, wherein the skill sets are combined for collective offering, is fast gaining acceptance.

role of an architect, in today’s times, is that of a designer rather than of a creator in earlier times.

Ar. Sabeena Khanna believes today in the architecture created eons ago. Need and necessity for settlement gave rise to creation wherein architecture enmeshed itself into the fabric of everyday living. Mankind began to develop towns and cities. Studio K.I.A. is an established multidisciplinary firm with over three decades of expertise, experience and excellence in design consultancy, real estate development and project management within India and globally. The firm offers a multitude of services covering the entire panorama of creating a vision, feasibility analysis, project development, financial assessment, conceptualization, design, detailing and documentation up to delivery. Planning, architecture, design, engineering and management are the responsibilities that Studio K.I.A. undertakes. Its presence in the Middle East and USA along with already established local and international alliances puts Studio K.I.A. on a sought-after pedestal, and growth of architecture will only do value addition to the practice. Some of the international concerns of Studio K.I.A. include the Dubai Lifestyle City, Dubailand for ETA Group; concept creation of a mixed land-use development in Sharjah on a land lot admeasuring 1,000 acres; hospitality project design, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and a 500-acre mixed land use com residential development in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. X-Factors Architecture as a profession is very diverse and dynamic. Creativity and design knows no boundaries. Each building is driven by an architect’s vision based on a client’s brief. Architecture profession is undergoing a rampant change as technology has affected several aspects of architecture and the wider field. Challenges are also arising due to extreme urbanisation, reducing natural resources and climate changes. Architecture profession has to keep in perspective these global challenges and carefully tread the path of sustainability, alternative technologies and eco-friendly solutions. Architects have a social and cultural responsibility to create buildings that uplift the human spirit in addition to the function they serve. They create physical environments and subtly infuse positivity and relevance, which improves quality of life. These collectives make architecture meaningful beyond its physical manifestation.

Factors governing architectural practice will continue to be sensitivity and responsiveness, so that engaging and collaborative environments are created. Achievements in 2014 The year 2014 is gone by keeping the computers overworked with their creative minds in the studio, burning midnight oil much too often. Studio K.I.A. widened its client base and bagged several designing of some prestigious projects for renowned developers. Creativity unfolded with the launch of “Petioles, Gurgaon” and “The Grand, Gurgaon” — two decisively creative residential developments as part of a larger residential commune. The firm also added “Wave Executive Floors” to its project profile. Residential and mixed land use developments are its forte, and it is very satisfying to create meaningful, people centric spaces which are actually lived in. Ar. Khanna takes great pride in all her architectural projects and more so when they become a reality. In the year 2014, the firm also spread its wings globally, yet again. “Space Creative Design & Engineering LLC” came into

being in the Middle East with an emphasis on architectural design, development and project management. “Space Creative Design” will set new standards of design and bring the best of international practices with rich and varied expertise, experience and excellence to the Middle-East region. In addition, “The Hectare Group” was formed in New York to render real estate feasibility and advisory services. Both these expansions will be looked forward to eagerly in 2015. Expectations in 2015 Being a diehard optimist, Ar. Khanna looks at the New Year with tremendous positivity. For Studio K.I.A., it will definitely be a year of achievement, accomplishment and successful design and deliveries. Space Design Creative will work alongside Studio K.I.A. to attain a stronghold in the Middle East, and she feels very confident and excited about this international venture. The year 2015 will see Studio K.I.A. making meaningful contributions to the built environment — a visible architecture that will excite, calm, please and make one think yet function well. n

“A great architect can be measured in the kind of legacy he or she leaves behind,” remarks Ar. Kalhan Mattoo, Planet 3 Studios Architecture

Architecture is at crossroad Ar. Kalhan Mattoo is a savant-like when it comes to value designing. He wants to work in such projects where architecture isn’t measured in extreme efficiency in terms of sq. feet or in terms of how much volume one can build. India and architecture The profession of architecture in India is at crossroad. Earlier, an architect used to be the only person who handled the entire project from its design to construction to completion. Now, as the profession is growing, there is lot more specialisation. Now, more specific skills are required in the industry. For various reasons, an architect has diversified into various segments of design and construction.

A general architect, who would be able to do all kinds of typologies, is also giving advice on project management and selection of contractors. The same architect used to make submissions to the municipal corporation. Earlier, an architect was a one and all kind of entity; now it’s no longer the same. The profession is at crossroads because a lot of the traditional spaces of the architect

have been claimed by project management agencies and specialised design houses. The whole relationship an architect had with the approving authorities has completely changed now. It is now mediated by specialised architects. With an increase in competition, changes in technology and client expectations, the profession is at a very interesting point. Adding value to growth There are certain challenges, and Planet 3 Studios believes that architects have to be generalist so that they can work on different kinds of formats and typologies to keep the creative sense alive in the studio. Over the time, Ar. Mattoo and his studio have understood what kind of space people not want to be in — this has been a kind of important learning for them. Planet 3 Studios doesn’t want to be in the co-modified office design. It really don’t want to be in the mark projects where architecture is merely measured in extreme efficiency in terms of sq. feet or in terms of how much volume one can build. Planet 3 Studios is looking for projects that are of certain quality and have certain design mandate given by the client. Which also offers a certain design challenge, and Ar. Mattoo is getting enough projects like that. Lately, he has delivered a hotel in Agra. He has also finished the first phase of 1.5-million-sq.-feet

Architecture are not necessarily dictated by the privileged. They are led by greater understanding of the profession. They see the potential of a design to create something which is transcendent and not necessarily transactional. Kalhan Mattoo thinks a lot of good architects get stuck in the whole transactional part of the profession which is approving process, budget and so forth.

residential development in Pune for which he won an award for the best architect of the year. He then finished the auditorium for which he received the best auditorium award and other such similar projects. These are all exciting projects that have a clear design and mandate of the project. He would probably look at his studio becoming a sophisticated firm. X-Factors One thing that has worked for Planet 3 Studios is the open mindedness to look at different types of projects and clients. It doesn’t come with too much of package when it comes to such projects. The studio just wants to look at how the value designing can add to a project. With that kind of open mindset, the studio has done every project. It calls it the beginner’s mind which has a fresh prospective. The studio keeps on gently question everything that comes its way. While it does that, it does with a sense of empathy to the end users. Planet 3 Studios tries to create solutions which do things differently for its clients.

Achievements in 2014 It has been a very interesting year for Kalhan Mattoo and his studio. Planet 3 Studios finished a four-star hotel and auditorium. He is also working on a 60-acre residential community in Indore. Within the community, there will be organic farming. Then OVO in Pune, where he won the best residential architect award, is also a very contextual project but understands the local context very well by using steel and facades systems. Then he finished the Clarient headquarter which is a 1-lakh-sq.-feet facility in Airoli, Mumbai. The headquarter is a sort of technologically complex project and an exciting edition for his portfolio. It’s been a year of variety of construction for Ar. Mattoo who has also created a prototype as an urban intervention. It is basically a bus stop which has been thought as an urban intervention. The bus stop has a lot of things added to it. They are thinking of doing a test operation somewhere either in Bangalore. Across various scales and experimenting, he

has created a new kind of work station for a CEO which has the facility of audio-visual. From a 60-acre design to projects like this, Ar. Mattoo has done all kinds of project in 2014. Expectation from Planet 3 Studios There is a hotel project which Ar. Mattoo has started in Daman. It is a kind of project that echoes the local context in terms of the fishing community around the place, and the history of the place is a mixture of Portuguese and India heritage. He is very excited about this project and wants to see it complete in a year or two. He is also looking forward to the 60-acre project in Indore. There are also several other projects which he is working on. Like the one in Kerala where he is echoing the traditional architecture in a contemporary way. He is also experimenting more and more with parametrical tools to achieve the desired designs. Last year, he delivered a pool of business which was his third building in Mumbai. This year, he wants to look at adding 3-4 more buildings in Mumbai. He is currently onsite with such more interesting projects as well. These buildings are interesting for him because of the restricted nature of the development control regulation. He is trying to push the envelope when it comes to designing with excessive controls. Ar. Mattoo also is working on a 70,000-sq.-feet-single family residential project in Nagpur which is something he looks forward to. n Twin Towers, Silver Springs, Indore

Great architect vs good architect It depends on how great can be measured in the quality of work which one does. It can be measured in the kind of legacy one leaves behind. It can also be measured in the kind of influence on work while you are practising your profession. The architects who stand out and are known for their works have certain courage of conviction and ability to follow their instincts when it comes to designs which

Architecture was equated to a makeup man on the civil engineering back drop restricting his contribution to cosmetic treatment of structures. Even today “municipal buildings” do not like to place a plaque bearing architect or structural designer’s name; instead they love to put a stone tablet with only politician’s names.

Recently, the Indian developers have been giving credit where it is due and using architect’s name as a value-addition feature. They have realised that an architect’s name is synonymous with his set pattern of values in design and quality of spaces and helps them get better popularity. An architect’s presence in the scheme of things is added as a brand that presumes many attributes such as ambience, quality of work and spaces and resulting life style — a kind of signature statement. Adding value to the profession Architect Anand Upalekar is in his 43rd year of his professional presence and has established a niche in specialised design areas such as sports architecture, high-tech architecture, transportation architecture and public buildings. Planning for repeat clients is a way of acknowledging and celebrating its contribution. Secondly, he emphasises in using various project-related tools like software and other skills which assure strict project

This directly helps the clients as they don’t have to spend on R&D but get the latest know-how and techniques. X-Factors The X-Factor could be termed as a set of attributes, especially attached to an architect’s work. It can be termed as the “people-specific-vernacular” that brings about the exclusivity of that architect. monitoring. Decision and implementations, thereof, are very closely achieved because of such technocratic approach.

Achievements in 2014 Architect Upalekar’s firm designs public buildings. A few school buildings have been trendsetters and one particular school — Rajiv Gandhi School of E-learning — has been in the Prime Minister’s award list.

He has a specific achievement in adventure sports architecture. His design of a skateboard park has been a first of its kind in the country. His involvement in structures related to public parking, bus depots and bus terminals has been innovative and widely useful to traffic improvement in Pune. Expectations from 2015 Amongst its high-tech projects on the anvil are a butterfly park (a Mahila Empowerment Co-operative Project where Pupae is collected from Jungles and sold in international market at $3 million per year) and a planetarium (with 90-spectator capacity) have been very satisfactorily on his drawing board. Having proved his metal for past 41 years of professional heat treatment cauldron, he would like to continue follow his approach of working style, including hardcore data mining to the hilt, full-fledged study and analysis of old and new working techniques, up-to-date knowledge of proven materials and its due recommendations in his design scheme to benefit his clients. n

Designing kaleidoscopic architectural heritage Ar. Surinder Bahga wears many hats. Architecture and India India is one of the oldest civilisations with a kaleidoscopic variety and rich architectural heritage. Over the years, due to increase in population, poverty, industrialisation and growing materialism, we have lost track of achieving excellence in architecture. There was considerable deterioration in almost all spheres of life. Architecture was also at crossroads. Chandigarh offered the Indian architecture a great opportunity but that was 68 years ago. British architect Dame Jane Drew had said, “Unfortunately, no Indian politician since Nehru has really done much to use the talent available. France has benefited enormously from Mitterand’s patronage. The need for India is

to use architects to solve its great housing and planning problems is self-evident”. At the time of India’s partition in 1947, there were only two teaching institutions of architecture and about 300 qualified architects in the country to serve a population of 330 million. By the mid80s, to a maximum stretch, only 10,000 architects were available for 750 million people which worked out to one architect for every 75,000 people ─ quite a low ratio as compared to the one prevailing in developed countries like the United States and the Great Britain. But today’s India teems, with about 400 schools of architecture, turning out almost 25,000 graduates every year. The surveys indicate that India needs nearly 6.5 lakh architects in next few years to meet the demand of the country. Surely the profession is getting acceptance, and it is likely to be more acceptable to masses in next five years. example, with the growth of law, medicine and accountancy, lawyers, doctors and chartered accountants have benefited a lot. So Ar. Surinder Bahga expects if our architecture flourishes, the architects will automatically prosper. At present only 2 per cent of India’s buildings are designed by architects, rest are still being done by unqualified people. Public can reach architects even at small towns or village level. There will be more opportunities and more options of hiring good professionals. There can be more competition provided it remains healthy one. X-Factors The availability of a large variety of building materials, growth of building industry, technology, awareness about architecture in general and green buildings in particular are some of the X-factors which are helping the architecture, construction and infrastructure industry. On the other hand, deteriorating level of architectural education and calling tenders from architects against the spirit of Architects Act, 1972, are factors which are bringing bad name to architectural profession. The Union Government and Council of Architecture may consider inviting good teachers from abroad to cope with the acute shortage of good faculty in the country. When private airlines were launched in India, government permitted airlines to hire pilots from abroad. Similarly, architectural faculty can be engaged from abroad. This can be experimented to lift the standard of education. Ar. Bahga observes, allowing foreign architects to practice in India should be allowed only on mutually accepted terms. For example, foreign architects can work in India but Indian architects are not allowed there. It is unfair. Achievements in 2014 Ar. Bahga had envisioned certain ideas and projects in the beginning of 2014. It gives a lot of satisfaction if one’s dreams get translated into reality. In 2014, he had completed three projects; namely, Red Cross Bhawan in Chandigarh, Red Bishop Convention Centre in Panchkula and Agro Mall in Rohtak. In these projects, he has

made an attempt to relate these buildings to site and surroundings having concern for environment. As a councillor in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC), he played a key role in conceptualising and implementation of over bridge, underground multi-level parking and construction of MC head office in Sector 17 besides a school in sector 49 in Chandigarh. It is surely going to benefit the citizens in many ways and give a completed look to Le Corbusier’s commercial district of Sector 17. He had organised an International conference on Habitable Built Environment called “Niche-2014” at LPU, Jalandhar. It was the first such conference of this level in Punjab.

In his own projects, he is sincerely trying to design building envelope, HVAC, public health and electrical services to make them energy efficient. He is working on CT University, Jagraon in Punjab having 16-lakh-sq.-feet covered area. It is to be built up on 37-acre site. Buildings are kept high-rise to facilitate more parking at ground levels. Special care has been taken to facilitate phasing and future expansion of the campus. In another project of Town Centre at TDI City, Panipat, he has two pockets. One pocket consists of showrooms and shops while the other pocket will accommodate showrooms at lower levels and three multiplexes on upper levels.

Expectations in 2015 Ar. Bahga is involved in drafting Punjab Energy Conservation Building Code which is likely to be implemented in Punjab. Talks are going on with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency for training staff related to local bodies like municipal corporations and councils, improvement trusts and other stakeholders like architects, engineers, planners and builders.

In order to realise the dream of Prime Minister to build smart cities in country, he along with other prominent architects are organising National Conference on “Rediscovering Cities” to be held at the School of Architecture, MMU, Ambala (Haryana) on 10-11 April, 2015. Helping India grow architecturally STUP has been a savant-like when it comes to designing infrastructure projects. The firm ha designed metros, airports, bridges, railways, roads, viaducts, nuclear power, thermal power, space sciences, armed forces, marine structures and so forth. In an interview with ACE Update, Satyakam Garg talks about architecture and it is adding value to the nation’s growth.

“STUP has been designing for Indian infrastructure for the past 52 years and always valued national progress on its priority,” remarks Satyakam Garg, Architectural Head, Metros & Railways, STUP Consultants Pvt. Ltd.

Architecture in India Currently, when India stands on the line of developing-to-developed country in these times of globalisation, STUP sees architecture is playing a major role for development of the nation. Opportunities in the sector of infrastructure development are growing which will certainly provide vistas of associated architectural works. In terms of making the cities better, urban and landscape planning will have tremendous amount of works to be done. Also, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for the new smart cities will provide the necessary platform for architects and engineers.

The mood for upcoming infrastructure development opportunities is going to add to its project list for which the firm has required expertise and in-house facilities. STUP has offices across the globe and are already handling lots of national and international projects. The firm is constantly adding to its team of experts, providing growth platform to engineers and architects and delivering projects which are vital to the nation. design, STUP refers the following list as X-factor: • Creativity: Individual creativity in architecture is of utmost importance, leading to new ideas and works that provide an identity to the city where the project comes up. • Functionality: Project designs need to meet the functional criteria meeting all safety, function, quality, aesthetics, ease of use, durability and maintainability norms. • Economical sustainability: For a country like India, where demand is high, economy plays a major role. Designs that work without unnecessary frills are needed so that more projects can be done. Robust structural design with minimal material, economical manufacturing of building components and quick assembly of parts is going to be the approach. Achievements in 2014 STUP have been able to bag major infrastructure projects in India and abroad during 2014. Riyadh Metro Project’s park and ride facilities are one of them. STUP had many interesting design challenges in 2014. For example, during construction of one of the metro stations, STUP received a notice from the client to change the station to an interchange station which meant major design and construction impacts. STUP was able to redesign the station without any major construction impacts. This not only fulfilled the client’s requirements, it also saved major reconstruction costs to the client. Gambia’s parliament building has been handed over to Gambian Government during 2014. STUP has also bagged UP Police headquarters building design in Lucknow along with Ahmedabad Metro project design. Expectation in 2015 In 2015, STUP is expecting more metros designs to be delivered along with roads, highways, city infrastructure planning and headquarters for some of the government organisations. n

“Architecture is now gaining respect and more and more people are turning towards professional architect or professional interior designer to do up their houses or offices,” remarks Architect Sanjay Porwal, Kalayojan Architects

Ann

Kalayojan Architects is a technologically advanced firm with its roots rooted to the ground according to the local and climatic context. In an exclusive interview with ACE Update, Architect Sanjay Porwal shares how architecture can influence the way we live. India and architecture In simple term, the word “profession” means an expertise in a particular area. People turn to professionals when they want to do a particular thing and do not know how to go about. It is true that architectural profession is gaining acceptance in India. About two or three decades back, this profession was not really looked up to. In villages nobody needed an architect. It was a local mason who used to guide about arrangements of various rooms. At best a local government surveyor would draw a plan at a very meagre fee.

CONSTRUCTION

ENGINEERING

Recently Ar. Porwal learnt that in Nasik Industrial Area, the practice of getting drawings approved from the authority will be stopped and architects would be made responsible for what they do. As a doctor does not need confirmation from any other body to prescribe medication or a lawyer does not confirm with any other authority while giving advice to the clients, an architect doesn’t need to be obliged to any such authorities for executing the design, he feels.

The committee head was shocked to hear this fee and said that in the neighbouring district town there is a person who makes the drawing for just ` 500. In BMC, Ar. Sanjay Porwal supposes they still have provision for plans to be signed by a surveyor. This trend is definitely now declining. Architecture is now gaining respect and more and more people are turning towards professional architect or professional interior designer to do up their houses or office.

Growing value to Kalayojan Architects Most of Kalayojan’s projects have been outside Mumbai where the firm found greater sense of freedom, creative approach and heartfelt design-based solutions due to lesser restrictions by building regulations. Kalayojan not only excelled in such projects but also won certain design awards. With larger acceptance of architecture as profession and given greater freedom, its kind of practice will gain more importance even in metros like Mumbai.

Post independence, in the PWD- and BMCdominated culture, the civil engineer has majorly dominated over a professional architect. Even now the building plans in the BMC are approved by engineers and not architects. Hence one can see the buildings in the metros are more bye-laws oriented rather than design oriented. The creativity of the architect would find a place only in elevation. Hence largely in metro cities like Mumbai architecture is limited to being just skin deep. Whereas the buildings are planned by the bye-laws and building regulations, there could be body of architects (just like we had Urban Arts Commission in New Delhi) which approves the plan for its design and for its effect and impact in its neighbourhood

Favourite projects to design Ar. Sanjay Porwal wishes that he can build a very tall building in Mumbai. When we see the Kanchenjunga Building of Charles Correa at Kemps Corner, Mumbai, there is no other building compared to that. Charles didn’t need any other tall building in Mumbai to make his presence felt. Kalayojan wants to build a tall building in Mumbai because whatever projects it is doing is horizontal designs. Its structures rarely go five-storey high because of the campus projects that it does. Kalayojan looks forward to building more technology-oriented buildings. It is a technologically advanced firm with its roots rooted to the ground according to the local and climatic context. n

local/urban context and in context of the environment. Architecture cannot be merely confined to tangible means of building byelaws. Building environment and natural world The architectural profession is changing, and artist, architect, and structural engineer Sriniwas P. Anchuri is hopeful about the future of architects in India. In an exclusive interview with ACE Update, he shares how he and his wife started their practice in a small space and transformed into a premium architectural firm.

Architecture and India Architecture profession is gaining unprecedented acceptance in India, not only in India but all over the world, especially in developing countries. It is an exciting, broad-based and challenging profession, and the role of an architect is evolving today at an exceptional rate. Architectural practices are applied to building design and construction in today’s fast-paced, ecologically responsible and cost-driven construction industry. Architect forms a shelter out of an idea about the use, subdivides the space and develops the plan for relations among the assemblies. When the aspiration pushes beyond simple utility of building to architecture, it is the architect who pushes the assemblies and their joints by massing, shaping, surfacing and profiling. Architecture requires deep control, not merely of an idea but also the substance an architect uses to give form to the idea.

The use of materials in architecture is rarely more than a stylistic statement made in an effort to claim modernity merely through the use of an innovative product. Novelty alone cannot sustain use. Sustainability movement in architecture is gaining tremendous momentum every year. Still the industry needs hard information about the planning, design, products and methods for sustainable structures. In India, apart from thought process, the age at which the people are thinking of having their dream home has changed. The change can be seen not only in their use of communication device which anyone can clearly see. How have the smartphones come and how have we shown exit to telegram from the country? Right from the home to working place, we have changed .There is a sea change in our day-to-day requirements. In urban life, working women percentage has increased. Journey in architecture Architect S. P. Anchuri has started his practice 18 years back in Hyderabad with his wife, Chamundeshwari Anchuri, in a small space. They used to call it “office cum residence” not “residence cum office”. In those days, their average clients’ age group was 55 to 58 years who used to come to

Architecture them for getting their dream home designed and built with their retirement benefits for their children and grandchildren. Slowly the age of client went on reducing and in 2005 it came down to 45 years and requirement was for their teenage children. With the rapid growth in information technology and industrial developments, age group came down to 30 years. Now the requirement is for their parents being their child. The fast development in material science and process engineering on one hand and on other side information technology, availability of any kind of information at single click, global became local. Now people are thinking to have their home at the time of appointment letter itself. Is it to explain about the very rapid change of mind set. Anchuri & Anchuri, at their office, continuously keep themselves updated. The firm has grown multifold with more than 10 associated consultants. S. P. Anchuri, being one of the rare combinations in India, i.e. an architect and structural engineer by education and practice, delivered very eco-consciously designed buildings to the society. His wife helps him in achieving eco-conscious designs of buildings through integrated approach. Her contribution, especially in architectural design, is tremendous. X-Factors The architectural profession is changing. Globalisation and unpredictably prove dominant forces in architectural profession and architects must address X-factors. S. P. Anchuri has defined a number of factors that could better position Anchuri and Anchuri within the market, principally by producing diverse, eco-conscious designs. To achieve this, he has defined X-change as the central goal in addition to knowledge X-change and social X-change and trying for Capacity Pull X-factors, Media Fascination Xfactors, Professional Hold X-factors. world. Not only they design for clients but as a social responsibility help others through various forums by open communication, constructive dialogue, television programmes and leading magazines by sharing research, data and ideas. He has recently constructed his own home which is a net zero building. They enjoy every second of the 24 hours of the day. The same feeling they are trying to give to their clients in their building design. Pyramids, sky lights and central court yards are a prime factor in their designs. In group housings they have achieved no common wall concept for each apartment without compromising the built-up area. Achievements in 2014 In 2014, Anchuri and Anchuri did many projects which include educational institutions, malls, residential and commercial buildings, ashram and auditorium. The current objectives towards sustainable buildings and architectural design are leading to new challenges for the construction industry in coming years. The lifecycle design approach, which take into account all the aspects of construction practice from design, construction and service life management, to demolition and the recycling of materials is the best approach today. Especially in Hyderabad after the formation of two states Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, people are there are living through a period of great change — specifically a great challenge — in which we can also see changes in the central goals and requirements of construction techniques. Anchuri and Anchuri is adapting precast

It has recently established office in Vizag to cater Andhra Pradesh. Other projects will continue to experience a slower growth, which will increase as more global companies enter the Indian market, with demand for offices, retail outlets and

business hotels, most of which will be in the form of mixed-use developments. The challenges of achieving good investment returns will still hinder growth, and all parties involved in development have to work closer together to lobby government and local authorities to ease restrictions, which often adversely affect development of commercial and retail projects. The architectural profession is also gaining status among developers because of this growth. Respect for the profession, particularly the added value of engaging professionals, has been lacking in the past. Since more developers engage architects for full service on their projects, the more they will realise the value. Finally, India is experiencing growth as a tourist destination, and the need for development of resorts and lodges in areas rich in wild life as being high on the agenda for the next 5 years.

Architecture Bentel India and market presence Bentel India is a joint venture between ICS Group and Bentel Associates International. Any growth in the property development market will be valuable, especially in the mixed-use development projects, for which Bentel India has many years of experience in completing award-winning projects throughout the globe. At the same time, it has entered into the residential market and expects to see much growth in its involvement in this sector.

X-Factors According to Stephen, the X-Factors governing the architecture profession are innovation in embracing new technologies, both in design and construction techniques. Then there is the need to integrate as much sustainable or green systems in all projects. Lastly, the need for developers should be more receptive to the fees payable to architects for their services. The intellectual property of architects is currently undervalued, and it is up to architects to ensure that the value of their contributions to any development is understood.

Achievement in 2014 Receiving the Best Office Architecture Award in India from the Asia Pacific Property Awards was among its prime achievements in 2014. Bentel won this award for its development of Thane One Development in Mumbai. PVP Square, a retail development in Vijaywada, also received recognition from the Concrete Association of India. Expectations in 2015 As far as 2015 is concerned, Bentel Associates is committed to produce the highest quality designs that translate into successful projects, both from an aesthetic and financial point of view. In Dehli, Bentel is currently engaged on what will be one of India’s largest mixed-use developments. It expects to complete the project early in 2016. Its involvement in off-shore projects, especially in the African continent, will increase as the relationship between its two offices becomes fully integrated into one office. n

Shaping and designing urban India

“The X-factors in the profession [architecture] remain the quality of education and research and development, says Ar Jit Kumar Gupta

Since India is adopting a policy of globalisation, liberalisation and opening of economy, we are going to witness major growth and development in urban areas. In an exclusive interview with ACE Update, Ar. Gupta shares why there are enormous opportunities of planning, designing and research in the art and science of shaping cities and designing state-of-the-art buildings. Architecture in present India Architecture is known to be one of the oldest professions in the human history. Over the centuries, profession has evolved and grown in intent, content and scope with the fastchanging human needs, rapid economic development, fast-changing technologies and innovations made in the search for new building materials.

Profession of architecture has its prime focus on creating quality built environment. Built environment has now been recognised for its impact on environment, ecology and sustainability, not only at the local level but also at the global level, due to large consumption of energy and non-renewable resources besides generation of waste. Accordingly, it is now being increasingly recognised that profession of architecture needs to be leveraged to make buildings which are highly sustainable, least consumers of energy and generators of the zero waste. Profession of architecture has also showcased that buildings designed by architects can make value addition not only to the city but also in promoting human efficiency and providing higher quality of life. Increasing recognition of role and importance of creating green buildings has also given added impetus

to the profession. In their endeavour of providing quality built environments, cities like Chandigarh and Delhi have mandated that all buildings should be designed by the qualified professionals. Next 5 years will witness major growth and recognition of the profession in the country. The profession, which is considered to be elite and remain confined to the boundaries of larger metropolises, has also started getting recognition in small and medium towns and rural areas. Increasing access to the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) has helped in creating awareness among people about the role of architects as a professional distinct from engineers in creating built environment. With India adopting a policy of globalisation, liberalisation and opening of economy, major growth and development is going to be witnessed in urban areas. India is also treading on the path of rapid urbanisation with 10 million people being added to urban areas on annual basis. Studies made by the McKinsey Global City, in respect of future urbanisation in India, has reported that country will need to add 700-900 million square metres of built space to its cities every year (equivalent to creating a city like Chicago), to meet the needs for human living, working and leisure of increased urban population. Accordingly, architects will have much larger professional opportunities. With the government launching the programme of developing 100 smart cities, these cities will provide opportunities hitherto not known to the profession. Recent announcement made

Architecture by the government to provide affordable housing for all by 2025, by creating 26 million dwelling units, will add a new chapter of opportunities and recognition for the profession. Promoting skill development by creating state-of-the-art institutions like IIMs, IITs, SPAs and numerous universities, which are likely to come up in the country for higher learning will open numerous windows for the profession of Architecture. Considering the fact that Indian urban growth and development story has started unfolding only recently, its impact is going to be showcased in the urban centres in creating more variety of state-of-the-art buildings with large footprints, providing enormous opportunities for architects to demonstrate their professional skill, expertise and knowledge. Growing opportunity As a professional engaged in consultancy and academics, Ar. Gupta feels the emerging local and global scenario offers enormous opportunities of planning, designing and research in the art and science of shaping cities and designing state-of-the-art buildings. Creating smart cities provide both opportunities and challenge to the architects, planners and professions of architecture and planning to search for appropriate and innovative solutions to create new breed of cities and buildings which provide new dimensions to human living, working and leisure. Creating affordable housing on a massive scale will create a paradigm shift in the designing of the residential buildings which architects have been designing so far. New housing should be planned and designed as cost-effective, energy- and resource-efficient structures without compromising with the quality of life and quality of spaces and built environment. There are a lot of value additions in the domain of planning, designing and managing new cites with appropriate framework to create sustainable buildings besides enormous scope for research and development.

and development to make sure that profession of Architecture provides highest quality of professional input and output to serve the people, community and nations to make this world more cleaner, greener, sustainable and liveable. However, role of professional as well as academic institutions and council of architecture will be critical to maintain the quality of profession. Achievements in 2014 During 2014, Ar. Gupta had the opportunity of closing the “Review of Master Plan of Srinagar-2031” for the state of Jammu and Kashmir as the Senior Advisor for the SAI Group of Ahmedabad. Year 2014 also marked the conclusion of the “Draft Master Plan Chandigarh-2031” as an expert on the project. During this year, syllabus and course contents for the under-graduate level architecture were finalised as the Chairman of the Board of Studies for the Punjab Technical University. In addition, a number of research papers were prepared and presented in the area of smart cities, designing green and intelligent building, promoting sustainable transportation and planning in the north-west states of India. Expectation in 2015 The year 2015, Ar. Gupta sees a year of opportunities in the realm of planning and designing smart cities, in the academics, both as an advisor, teacher and researcher for the post/undergraduate courses in architecture and working on different areas of research in planning, designing and management of human settlements and built environment. He looks forward to 2015, as year of great learning, value addition and education in the domain of architecture. n

X-Factors There are large numbers of factors governing the quality of profession of architecture which include the quality of education, research and development, professional ethics, sincerity, commitment, service delivery and quality of professionals. However, the X-factors in the profession remain the quality of education and research and development. Historically, all professions have survived and grown purely on the basis of quality of professionals serving it. Quality of professionals is determined, primarily and essentially, by the quality of people joining the profession and quality of education imparted. Unfortunately, in the profession of architecture, quality of education has emerged as the major casualty with large-scale commercialisation of architectural education. A number of architectural institutions have mushroomed in the country (387 in 2014). Majority of these institutions suffer from faculty, both in quality and quantity, with the result majority of institutions are imparting education by proxy. Further, the faculty available is fresh and raw with no teaching experience. Even students joining the profession, in majority of cases, are left over from engineering and other profession. With increasing intake granted on year-to-year basis, quality of education has emerged as the major causality. In the prevailing circumstances, it will be critical to look at the entire gamut of architectural education, quality of intake and quality of education imparted besides promoting research

will act as a catalyst in reviving global economy. The new government’s 10-year plan to improve infrastructure includes building smaller airports in towns, a high-sped train network, revamping trains and modernising ports. The government is planning a multi-billion dollar infrastructure fund to push investments. Four ministries — Civil Aviation, Railways, Road and Shipping — have been asked to work together. This will improve coordination and avoid delays in decision making. The government is all set to roll out Rs 2 lakh crore worth of infrastructure projects this year. Undoubtedly, the focus should be on expediting stalled infrastructure projects and resolve iron and coal mining issues. These measures must combine with reforms in environment issues, land acquisition, taxation, labour and speedy clearances of project approvals. In the construction sector, the central government has announced 100 per cent FDI

Construction as part of its initiative for “Make in India”. The government has eased foreign investment rules to make it easier for investors to enter the markets. The new rules proposed include reducing the built-up area requirement for FDI in construction projects to 20,000 sq. metres from 50,000 sq. metres. The minimum capital requirement has also been reduced to $5 million from $10 million. The new rules will make it easier for the government to attract investments to build smart cities and affordable homes in the country. It is also likely to improve the dismal infrastructure in Asia’s third largest economy and provide impetus to key manufacturing sectors such as cement and steel.

X-Factors There is an overall improvement in the investment outlook of the economy, and the government has initiated several reforms to set the economy on the growth path. Overseas investor sentiment is looking up, and India is bolstering its international relations with foreign partners. Inflation has softened bringing some cheer to the economy and the stock markets remain bullish. Evidently, the prospect of a stable government is the key to the growing optimism of the Indian businesses and overseas investors.

Further, the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) Notification of 2006 has been toned down to exempt many categories of buildings and construction projects from seeking environmental clearances.

Clients want solutions, not contractual agreements “Shapoorji Pallonji is very soft footed with its clients and enables them with solutions rather than only focus on contractual agreements,” says Somshankar Bose, Deputy General Manager (Proposal), Shapoorji Pallonji & Co. Ltd.

Shapoorji Pallonji & Co. Ltd. is one of the jewels in real estate segment in India. With the real estate market getting stronger, the company is planning to invest in newer technologies as well as allows the company to invest in development of intermediaries. In a conversation with ACE Update, Somshankar Bose shares why the reductions in interest rates are going to be real “X-Factor” in real estate sector. India and construction and infrastructure industry The Indian construction and infrastructure industry is going through testing times as it is under immense price pressure for returns for its investors. These challenges are from new entrants, including foreign entrants and smaller companies that may not adhere to safety and quality procedures required. The biggest challenge the industry faces is severe shortage of skilled manpower, an asset required for the business.

ers

ary

The industry continues to lack timely enforcement of regulatory laws that enables the construction sector worldwide and it lacks several essential intermediaries like standard accepted cost index companies, licensing and certification companies for skilled and unskilled labour, certification and monitoring of government implemented safety practices, licensing and certification for various construction trades, vocational skills, certification bodies for quality in materials, manpower and execution methods and so forth. World wide, these intermediaries are the enablers for construction industry to perform with a strong foundation.

Ann

The interest rate cut, which has started to come in early this year by the RBI, will give impetus to the growth in real estate market, which is the harbinger of construction activity. With the Modi Government looking at reforms, it is imperative that there is a focus on developing an integrated construction policy that addresses the gaps and pushes for inducing real change.

Growing Shapporji Pallonji The expected growth from the heightened activity in the real estate market will allow Shapporji Pallonji to pursue more business and hire the much required skill sets that will guard the company against the competition. It will allow the company to invest in newer technologies required for operational efficiencies as well as allows the company to invest in development of intermediaries. X-Factors The reductions in interest rates are going to be real “X-Factor” as the business depends on raising capital from the market. The reduced cost of capital can only allow the industry to look at some profitability. Shapporji Pallonji and the industry The market is waiting in the wings for growth and the reduced interest rates will be an impetus for this growth. This growth will be in the affordable housing market segment and value offering that is able to control costs, deliver projects on time and reduce cost overruns. Considering these market influencing factors, it is best to position the company on ability to deliver projects with a special expertise in the affordable housing market sector. The untapped market sector, which will come into effect, is the rise of investment in affordable healthcare and mid segment hospitality in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. Shapporji Pallonji and competitors Its single window offerings from design and build — including services in design, consulting, pre-construction services and finally contracting — is its unique differentiator. However, although being a part of large conglomerate, Shapporji Pallonji is very soft footed with its clients and enables them with solutions rather than only focus on contractual agreements. Shapporji Pallonji understands that its clients are also in a learning curve and is more than willing to work closely with them to define and deliver their requirements. n

Standing strong The primary drivers of long-term growth in India directly play to Caterpillar’s strengths, given the major industries directly served by Caterpillar: mining, marine, construction industries, quarry and aggregates, electric power, industrial and financial services.

Adding value to Caterpillar PM NarendraModi has pointed out that urbanisation should be treated as an opportunity. India represents a tremendous opportunity for Caterpillar, with increasing focus on infrastructure investment and a need for efficiency and higher productivity. Caterpillar’s belief is that “the road to progress… must begin with a road.” Its global vision is to be a leader wherever it does business and the same holds true for India and Asia Pacific.

Caterpillar has an optimistic view for itself in the Indian market. In fact, its presence in India is stronger than ever. The company is investing in its operations to support the ever-increasing consumer base here in India. Caterpillar values its supplier relationship and consider them an integral part of its business model. Double-digit growth across the sectors “We have pioneered PnC cranes in the Indian market and took it to the next level at the right time,” remarks Rajinder Raina, General Manager - Marketing, Escorts Construction Equipment

Escorts is one among the leaders in cranes and the fastest-growing company in backhoe loaders. The company is positive about the market as well as its influence to help the market grow. In a conversation with ACE Update, Rajinder Raina predicts the double digit growth across the sector and shares how this growth would add value to the entire chain. India and construction and infrastructure industry Infrastructure developments in India have immense potential. Barring last 2 years, the industry has consistently seen a doubledigit growth. Delayed decision making has led to negative growth and sentiment. Lack of quick decision making and clearances from land acquisition and environment has brought the wheels to a near standstill. The new government is likely to act to deliver the desired level of development and growth. Next couple of months should kick-start the process where after the growth should start. The next 5 years should give India a consistent doubledigit growth across the sectors. Last 2 months have registered small growth which is expected to get a multiplier effect post budget.

Overall, the growth will add value to the entire chain. X-Factors Infrastructure and construction industry hold massive potential in India. The government is committed to delivering growth, and for doing so it needs to have infrastructure at place. There are global players and investors who are keen to participate in India’s growth story by holding stakes on a long-term basis. With the current economic condition of China and Europe and a business like government in India, the industry is looking for the next decade. The confidence behind the promise comes from the fact that infrastructure and construction industry has witnessed exponential growth in the past and it is a part of the 5-year plan. The X-Factor comes from the fact that it will spearhead the growth in India, and rest everything will be secondary or consequential. Escorts and current market scenario Currently, Escorts is one among the leaders in cranes and the fastest-growing company in backhoe loaders. After-sales support is its X-Factor. Next 5 years should see it the No 2 in the industry. Escorts and competitors Escorts offers a wholesome package to its customers. Large investments and growing urbanisation are key to growth “Constant ability to innovate makes Dalmia unique as a cement manufacturer,” says Dr S. P. Pandey, Deputy Executive Director, Quality Management and R&D, Dalmia Bharat Ltd.

Dalmia is one of the leaders in cement manufacturing. Since it has started its journey in 1939, it has grown manifolds in terms of capacity. In a conversation with ACE Update, Dr S. P. Pandey talks about growing urbanisation and how it’s going to add value to the cement industry. Indian and construction and infrastructure industry India’s economy is big and getting bigger. Engineering and construction (E&C) industry in India is one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. It accounts for about 11 per cent of India as GDP. The construction industry significance to the Indian economy can be gauged by its growing contribution to gross domestic product (GDP) — from 5.1 per cent in 2001–02 to 7.9 per cent in 2010–11. By 2020, India is expected to emerge as the world’s third-largest construction market. Large infrastructure investments and growing urbanisation will fuel this growth. Additionally, the construction industry creates an annual asset base of $80 billion and generates employment for more than 40 million people. Liberalisation of government regulations and a deliberate strategy on the part of the Indian Government to promote infrastructure spells opportunity for E&C companies. Construction is the second largest economic activity in India after agriculture, and has been growing rapidly.

ers

ary

The total construction market in India for FY14 was $157 billion, an increase of $4 billion over FY13. Infrastructure accounts for 49 per cent, housing and real estate 42 per cent and industrial projects 9 per cent. Industrial construction is contributed by expansion projects from various manufacturing sectors. Real estate construction can be sub-divided into residential, commercial, malls/multiplexes and so forth.

drivers of construction sector growth over the last 10 year. Improvement in economic conditions has the potential to drive demand for real estate, as housing continues to be a favoured investment asset among Indian households. The construction activity involved in different segments differs from segment to segment. Construction of houses and roads involves about 75 per cent and 60 per cent of civil construction respectively. Demand-supply gap for residential housing, favourable demographics, rising affordability levels, availability of financing options as well as fiscal benefits available on availing of home loan are the key drivers supporting the demand for residential construction. The proposed increase in allocation in the 12th Plan (2012-2017) will translate into a healthy business for construction companies. According to a technical committee set up by the Ministry of Housing & Poverty Alleviation, the total provides a big investment opportunity. Building of airports and ports has construction activity in the range of 40-50 per cent. For industrial projects, construction component ranges between 15-20 per cent. Within a particular sector also construction component varies from project to project. Dalmia and present market scenario Constant ability to innovate makes Dalmia unique as a cement manufacturer. It has been a leader in cement manufacturing since 1939. Its cement plants in India have grown manifolds in terms of capacity. It is also acquiring some new plants to increase the volume and expand further. Dalmia Cement has given several vital projects from dams to critical defence installations and created special cements for special applications with newer and innovative technologies, which includes airstrip, oil well and railway sleeper cement. n

Correct application of construction chemicals to solve problems

“I believe in a future where we interact with our clients, not solely as a supplier, but also as a technical service partners,” says Sunny Surlaker, Head Admixtures Division, MCBauchemie (India)

Adding growth to MC-Bauchemie As the awareness of correct usage of construction chemicals and the market size increases, MC-Bauchemie expects to grow. Also, there is a focus on sustainability and durability, which is a hallmark of its construction chemicals systems. This focus and its ending dedication to technical solutions will help MC-Bauchemie grow and add value to it in India’s fast-growing scenario. X-Factors In the present scenario, construction chemicals are used in virtually every top tier construction segment like industrial, infrastructure and urban building construction. So the market and growth potential for MC-Bauchemie is tremendous. However, the focus among end users has been exclusively on specific materials, prices and guarantees. Also, more often than not, material and applicator capabilities are overestimated, without recourse to sound civil engineering principles, or credentials of the applicators, which may prove detrimental to the structures. These factors move away from “performance criteria” of the materials.

ary

However, MC-Bauchemie estimates that as the trends shift to increasing awareness, these limiting competitive factors will dissolve and focus would only rest on correct application of construction chemicals to solve problems.

february 2015

Indian and construction and infrastructure industry We need to see infrastructure groundwork taking place on a massive scale in India. And the government needs to take concrete efforts to mobilise more funds for the space. World-class infrastructure holds the key for India to become a sustained development. Coupled with a quantum growth in the construction sector of the country, infrastructure development is significant for rapid growth across all sectors as it provides access to rural areas, easy approach to markets, besides opening up new regions for investment opportunities. With the backdrop of active new government initiatives, friendly policies and rising investment trends in the sector, the Indian construction sector offers promising growth trends and opportunities. The 12th Plan, which started in 2013 looks set to include $1 trillion for infra development, with around 50 per cent of this likely to come from private funds. The new government has initiated innumerable initiatives to lift the sector from its current dormant conditions. Adding growth to PEBS Pennar With the initiatives of the new government, a positive atmosphere is created in the market. Mission “Make in India” also has significant effect, and Mr Rao expects a lot of investments coming up in industrial, railways, defence manufacturing, logistics hubs, new airports, sea ports, steel plants and also in rural and urban infrastructure segments. PEBS Pennar has been catering to these segments in the market and foresees significant growth opportunities in the coming 5 years.

X-Factors Currently, infrastructure is the main priority of Indian Government. The development of infrastructure is the main tool to achieving GDP growth targets. The sector needs huge finances and massive funding. But there is usually a major variation in the commission’s target and funds that are actually deployed. Nearly all of the infrastructure sectors present excellent opportunities for construction, with roads and highways, ports and airports, railways and power standing out as bright spots, with huge sums of investment planned. India’s economy is big and getting bigger. Liberal and supportive government policies coupled with deliberate strategies to promote infrastructure spells great opportunities for engineering and construction (E&C) companies in India. Along with construction, allied industries like cement and steel also will notice a rise in demand. Construction sector is likely to boom in the 12th Five-Year Plan. PEBS Pennar and current market scenario PEBS Pennar has started commercial production in January 2010 and is now a significant player in the PEB industry in India. PEBS Pennar is treated as preferred vendor by many leading companies. It has been growing at about 20-25 per cent every year. PEBS Pennar is targeting to reach revenue of ` 1,000 crore in the coming 3 years. PEBS Pennar and competitors Its strength is its talented engineering and execution teams. It has been living up to the expectations of its customers by delivering quality products on time and getting repeat orders from many leading companies in India. Its growth story of reaching a revenue of about ` 500 crore in just four and half years speaks about its capabilities and strengths. PEBS Pennar got Industry Excellence Awards twice, Corporate Governance Award, PEB Company of the Year Award, Infrastructure Company of the Year Award and so forth. n

Feel good factors to spur PEB market “We never allowed any stone unturned to ascertain the feasibility for further improvement — be it small, medium or big,” says Anjan Dutta Roy, Vice President, Tiger Steel India

Tiger Steel has always run its business based on its core competency to service the niche market and corporate giants. In an exclusive interview with ACE Update, Anjan Dutta Roy shares his business philosophy and the changing prospect of Indian construction and infrastructure industry. Indian and construction and infrastructure industry India’s economy is getting bigger and going to become the world’s third largest economy by 2050. Liberalisation of policies and deliberate strategies from the Government of India in promoting infrastructure spells opportunity for EPC organisations, e.g. roads and highways, ports, airports, railways and power. Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) are slowly gaining importance and benefited from government supports. Substantial portion of the proposed investments in construction projects, making the EPC companies one of the biggest beneficiaries of the infrastructure boom in India.

ers

ary

The current policies of the Indian Government are definitely encouraging the investors in infrastructure and construction projects from both domestic as well as overseas private capital. India is already a hot destination for foreign investors. As per UNCTAD reports, India is being rated the second most attractive location (after China) for global FDI. In order to increase FDI inflows, particularly with a view to catalysing investment and enhancing infrastructure, the Indian Government has also introduced significant policy reforms. As part of policy reforms, the government needs to simplify the approval route process, including setting up several agencies to expedite FDI approval. Then, without a doubt, there is huge opportunity in the Indian infrastructure space in the short- and medium-terms at least. The policies of the Indian Government, which have been evolving very rapidly in recent

years, continue to encourage the private sector in taking on a larger and more diverse role – from being an infrastructure builder (under a publicly financed arrangement) to an infrastructure developer (under PPP structures which include private finance). These developments have led to a large number of infrastructure projects open up as opportunities for the private sector. International EPC contractors and service providers are already leading players in India along with several Indian companies have either scaled up their skill sets or extended their operations. Tiger Steel and current market scenario There are various important factors for an organisation to match with the ongoing market scenario. These are: • Available talent pool like engineering and manufacturing bench strength • Current order back log and expected revenue generation • How it evolves with the market requirements and buyers’ sentiments • Strategies to counter the distorted behaviour in the local marketplace • Pace of execution vis-à-vis return on investments. Tiger Steel and competitors Mr Roy said, Tiger Steel has never made its business model to fight the so-called commercial based competitions. Since inception, it has always run its business module based on its core competency to service the niche market and corporate giants. Therefore, there is no specific tool is being used or required to fight so called competition. Tiger Steel never left any stone unturned to ascertain the feasibility for further improvement — be it small, medium or big. It is an ongoing process within the organisation. It has become a culture or mantra with the entire team members that what Tiger Steel has done yesterday is its past, and viewing today take steps to do something better in future is a must. n

“Kirby is proud that it has become a generic name in the PEB space,” remarks D Raju, MD, Kirby Building Systems India Ltd.

Since 1999, Kirby has been pioneering the PEB concept in India. Earlier PEB was used in only lower-end buildings. With increased acceptance, PEB is being used in high-end manufacturing facilities and other such complex structures. In an interview with ACE Update, D Raju talks about the wide acceptance of PEB concept.

ary

India and construction and infrastructure industry Quality of construction has improved significantly over the last decade due to increase in exposure to the global construction technologies and best practices. The project duration has become shorter, and there is a special focus on safety standards. There is a shift from in-situ construction to factory-controlled pre-engineered highquality construction. This has also changed the requirement of engineering, material and skills required for the construction industry. Kirby recognised this trend early and introduced the concept of pre-engineered steel buildings (PEB). In PEB, customer requirements are custom-engineered and high-quality material is delivered to site in ready to erect condition where semi-skilled people assemble these components using cranes for faster construction.

attention from the government, this industry can dramatically reduce construction time for industrial and infrastructure sectors. Pre-engineered construction impacts speed, quality and pricing of industrial construction. This construction has green benefits and a high resale value. It’s not surprising that Indian industrial construction is eminently poised for a big pre-engineered steel building (PEB) wave given India’s renewed focus on infrastructure and the new industrial thrust. The central government’s “Make in India” campaign and recent approval of ordinance for amendment of Land Acquisition Act for development of infrastructure and industry related projects will further give a boost to the economic growth as this was one of the major hurdle in delaying many projects. These reforms and many other such initiatives in coming future as promised by the government is expected to make the Indian construction and infrastructure segments much more stronger and increase its percentage share in the GDP contribution. Adding growth to Kirby Kirby India is involved in design, manufacture, supply and construction of steel structures which are in the range of a very simple warehouse to complex factories or power plants to high-rise structures for commercial or residential purpose. All these projects are CAPEX driven and purely based on the investment as per the requirement of their products and services in the market which is related to the demand-supply

Factory

X-Factors Construction contributes to more than 66 per cent of total steel consumption. In developed countries, more than two-thirds of the buildings are made in steel. The government should promote steel as construction material for speedy implementation of the projects and avoid cost overruns and project delays. The new government is planning for implementation of 100 smart cities, and this can be efficiently done using pre-engineered steel construction as done in developed countries providing an affordable and sustainable material for construction. Concessions in the form of tax incentives could also be extended for steel construction industry. Kirby and current market scenario Since Kirby pioneered this concept in 1999 in India, there is a huge response to the PEB concept and many industrial constructions are being constructed today with PEB. Earlier, PEB was used in only lower end buildings like warehouses. With increased acceptance and aggressive marketing from Kirby, PEB is being used in highend manufacturing facilities, power plants, commercial buildings, shipyards and many other such complex structures. MNCs, consultants and Indian corporate understood the benefits of this innovative — yet tried and tested construction technology — and became early adopters. Kirby had the privilege of partnering with most of the leading corporate and other companies from all types of industries: micro, small, medium and major by setting up their facilities across the sub-continent. Kirby is proud that it has become a generic name in the PEB space. Today, it is building higher specialisation for complex constructions such as ports and oil and gas industries as well as similar complex structures. The company has already constructed more than 15,000 different buildings which are spread over an area of more than 22 million sq. metres in India and over 65,000 building globally across 70 countries.

All these buildings are designed, manufactured and constructed over a period of over 15 years in India for all the industry segments which itself is one of the biggest achievement for any PEB company and positions itself in a different league among all the competitors. Today Kirby is one among the market leaders in India and successfully operating its two state-of-the-art PEB plants in Hyderabad and Haridwar each with a capacity of 100,000 tonnes per annum, respectively and directly employing over 2,000 people, 700 engineers and 250 industrial design experts and 100 project managers. Kirby has also developed a large builder network with over 120 certified builders across the country. Also, Kirby’s construction process is ISO 9001:2008 certified and lays special emphasis on reducing the environmental impact during the construction phase. n

situation. Many other factors such as country’s economic growth, global market scenario, purchasing power parity and consumer sentiments play a pivotal role in shaping the future investments and planning of new projects. Therefore, all these factors are very important for the company’s growth as increase in announcement of new investments and more projects in the manufacturing sector directly affects its growth and future planning. Any increase in growth of the Indian construction and infrastructure segments will also help Kirby grow both in terms of value and volume in coming years and maintain its leadership in the PEB industry.

Engineering consulting is expected to take off Tata Consulting Engineers is a large engineering consulting company which provides integrated engineering services from concept to commissioning in key sectors. In a conversation with ACE Update, J P Haran shares how Tata Consulting Engineers is working hard to set apart as a unique player in the market.

“Innovation, value engineering, integrated services and ethical practices set us apart as a global player of value, says J P Haran, Managing Director, Tata Consulting Engineers Ltd.

India and construction and infrastructure industry Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE) is a prominent player in the infrastructure space, delivering large-scale projects across the infrastructure verticals. The key drivers for the sector are capital investments, publicprivate partnerships, government policy decisions and demand. In a huge developing country like India characterised by unmet demands and growth potential, infrastructure projects are expected to be substantial in the next 5 years. This potential can be realised on the strength of the key drivers for the sector. These capital intensive projects require a climate for investments both public and private, government initiatives to facilitate investments in the sector and also tapping into funding from international funding agencies. With the new government in place, some of the bottlenecks affecting these projects are being taken care of. With more funding for the sector and a favourable business climate for investments, the sector is expected to take off.

Construction industry: constructively positive “I see a huge potential and opportunity for the construction industry to grow in all infrastructure sectors,” says Ashish Tandon, MD, Egis India Consulting Engineers

Egis is one of the top infrastructure solution providers in India. It can provide solutions from project inception to planning, design, execution and operation for all segments of the infrastructure sector. In an interview with ACE Update, Mr Tandon shares how Egis is assisting the Indian Government in its plans of upgrading and modernising the infrastructure in the country. India and construction and infrastructure industry The Indian construction industry has been growing from strength to strength over the last 2 decades, ever since the liberalisation of the Indian economy started. This industry is obviously dependent on the growth in the infrastructure sector, which in turn depends on the growth of the economy. Except for the last few years, Indian economy has been growing at a steady rate of 6-7 per cent or even more at times. The next 5 years look exciting for the industry because they coincide with the initiative of the present government to give the infrastructure sector the much needed push.

infrastructure

Egis would be best placed to offer solutions for all these opportunities and particularly interested at opportunities in green development, smart cities, urban infrastructure and transport. X-Factors The announcement by the central government to build 100 smart cities is one of the biggest X-Factors. Then there are “Make in India” campaign, “Look East - Engage West” policy, relaxation in the FDI norms and budgetary focus on physical infrastructure development. There are also availability and capacity of banks and financial institutions to lend to the sector (public and private) and thrust on inter-linking of rivers, promotion of inland water transport, and focus on maintaining and restoration of heritage cities. Egis and current market scenario While Egis is one of the top infrastructure solution providers in India, it is arguably the only provider of end-to-end solutions. It can provide solutions from project inception to planning, design, execution and operation for all segments of the infrastructure sector. Mr Tandon sees Egis in India as one of the leading players in assisting the Indian Government in its plans of upgrading and modernising the infrastructure in the country. Egis services The services — which differentiate Egis from competitors — are obsession with quality, ethical practices, end-to-end solutions and single window solutions, orientation towards green development and reduction in carbon footprint of projects, and cumulative experience of managing complex infrastructure projects in over a hundred countries. n

Opportunities for HVAC sector only to grow “Danfoss sees opportunity to help improve automation levels that help in both energy efficiency and improvement in plant productivity,” says Kamal Singh, Vice President, Power Electronics Division, Danfoss India

HVAC industry and infrastructure segment share a symbiotic relationship. With new policies and investment, both are vying for a solid presence in future. In a conversation with ACE Update, Kamal Singh shares how Danfoss is going to tap the opportunities. Indian and HVAC segment Increasing urbanisation coupled with the government’s thrust on “Make in India” to position India as a global manufacturing hub has definitely expanded the scope for infrastructure development. Statistics today say that about 70 per cent of the infrastructure that India needs has still not been constructed. As per estimates, by 2030, there will be about 10 billion square meters of constructed homes, hospitals and other buildings. In fact, according to a study by US Department of Energy, the country doubled its floor space between 2001 and 2005 and is expected to add 35 billion sq. metres of new buildings by 2050.

ary

HVAC industry and infrastructure segment share a symbiotic relationship. Currently, there is a sense of optimism in this space mainly owing to the huge rise in construction activity in the real estate market. The Indian heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) market is expected to grow by 30 per cent to over ` 20,000 crore over the next 2 years, mainly due to increase in construction activity in infrastructure and real estate sectors. According to industry reports, HVAC sector has grown to over ` 10,000 crore between 2005 and 2010 and reached ` 15,000 crore in FY14. More so, with the smart cities initiative of the government, construction and infrastructure industry will have to play a prominent role. Opportunities for HVAC sector in India is only to grow with these initiatives. However, what is important is that this demand is met by sustainable solutions.

minimising impact on climate. As a company, Danfoss propagates strong awareness on energy efficiency and the use of energyefficient products. It engineers solutions for optimal heating and cooling with minimal consumption of energy thereby contributing to its customers’ operational profitability. Energy consumption in buildings is growing at 8 per cent annually and in commercial buildings 70 per cent of energy usage and 63 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions are estimated to be contributable to heating, cooling and ventilation. Given that India is the third-largest energy consumer in the world, and its energy demand is expected to grow more than fourfold over the coming decades. Given the rapid urbanisation in the country, energy consumption and supply is on the rise in linewith India’s economic development, and in 2012 reached 788 million tonnes of oilequivalent (Mtoe) and 512 Mtoe respectively. HVAC-R takes a major share of electricity bills for residential, commercial and industrial applications, which will lead to tremendous pressure on energy sources. This can be eliminated by deploying energy-efficient measures that reduce the operational cost. This is where Danfoss plays a role. With fluctuations in power supply becoming a recurring activity, it is a safer to bet on energy efficiency as an alternate fuel. Danfoss sees huge opportunities in hospitality, pharma and hospital sector. It also has solutions for commercial establishments including IT sector like data centres, which are energy efficient and use climate-friendly refrigerants. Additionally, infrastructure is being created for clean air for which one needs equipment which can deliver the most energy-efficient output to achieve these goals. Danfoss is currently witnessing a huge demand in the air-conditioning segment, which is bound to increase in the near future.

Engineering X-Factors Some of the factors that govern the HVAC market include rise in population, rapid urbanisation and the subsequent need for infrastructure development. With more people moving into the cities, increasing industrialisation and change in food consumption pattern, every industry from manufacturing to processing and last mile delivery promise for consumer satisfaction will dictate the future of the segment. Allied industries — such as the growing healthcare and pharma sectors which need to cater to the burgeoning demographic’s health needs and the transportation sector which has to meet their mobility requirements — all of these factors will influence the HVAC segment growth prospects. Danfoss and present market Danfoss provides sustainable HVAC solutions that enable optimised performance and help customers make significant energy savings. This value proposition helps us position ourselves as the preferred energy solutions provider across varied industries. Its domain expertise and sector specific knowledge capital curated over 8 decades of global

experience has positively influenced and directed our approach to meet local needs of customers. Danfoss India’s 2015 growth strategy will focus on 3 key megatrends (cold chain, urbanization and energy efficiency) and looks at increasing the base business and penetration into Tier-2 cities. Within India, Danfoss is actively spreading its reach through the “Reach Out Programme” which aims at catering to the demand from smaller markets in India. This will essentially include markets in white spaces which Danfoss is seeking to cover in India and will enable the company to get closer to the end customers. Given its long-term vision in the country and the understanding it received of learning gaps among key stakeholders, Danfoss also sets up a refrigeration and air-conditioning learning centre. With its focus on skilling future manpower, it has tied up with various universities to set up student labs like advanced drives laboratories and also encourage young student innovators through the annual Danfoss Innovator Awards. Danfoss and competitors Automated energy optimisation application

is its core expertise. It has a hug range of energy-efficient technology, such as scroll compressors, turbocor compressors, VLT HVAC drive family and CKL substations for district cooling which Danfoss offers for hotels, data centres, airports, commercial buildings, pharma, railway and metros. These essentially provide significant percentage of energy savings compared to competitor’s technology hence making Danfoss the preferred choice. Moreover, the expertise that it comes with also makes it a differentiator. With its strong focus on innovation, it offers solutions that are space saving like the VLT drive which controls the speed of the motor based on the load. Danfoss sees opportunity to help improve automation levels that help in both energy efficiency and improvement in plant productivity – through its valves, drives, compressors, and electronic controllers and support the industry on improved safety standards through products offerings that reduce leaks and training stakeholders on best practices. Due to awareness about high-energy usage, customers are now slowly shifting to frequency controllers as it is one of the best ways to bring in energy efficiency. n

developments and environmental regulations. Prolonged summer has a very strong impact in the residential air-conditioner segment. Additionally, new found push for energy conservation, greater awareness towards star labeling and increasing demand for inverter based air-conditioning solutions has propelled the demand for energy-efficient airconditioners. However, the spurt in residential and commercial projects in metros and non-metros can be considered as the major factor. This has taken the HVAC industry to a different level. CMI believes the AC industry will benefit from these developments. CMI in current market scenario With the emerging middle class, increased disposable incomes and low level of product penetration, India holds very strong growth prospects for the consumer goods industry. AC is present in less than 5 per cent households in India, 70 per cent in South Korea, 72 per cent in Singapore and 45 per cent in China. The residential air-conditioning industry is expecting an average growth of 10-15 per cent over the next few years. That’s why CMI targets to be in the top 3 in the residential AC segment in India in the next 3-4 years. CMI and competitors The existing ranges of ACs will continue to be based on Carrier Midea’s core values of creating energy-efficient, effective cooling that will help in reduced electricity consumption. “We will continue to improve our products and make them affordable,” says Ketan Shah, Managing Director, MFE Formwork Technology India Pvt. Ltd.

Pioneering ‘make to order’ formwork

Adding growth to MFE Formwork The growth in the construction sector will have a positive impact on the industry which is directly related to residential segment of construction industry. Currently, there is a trend of using aluminium formwork for residential projects which will add to MFE’s growth as a company. X-Factors The factors that will cater to the growth will ease government policies as well as increase income. In turn, this will generate huge demand for housing industry. Also, entry of

MFE and formwork segment MFE is a premium brand in “make to order” formwork category. It is also the largest formwork selling company in this particular category. Its aim is to retain this position. It is aiming 20 per cent year-on-year growth for the next 5 years. Also, MFE will continue to improve its products and make them affordable.

ary

Construction prospects Considering the ambitious target of home for all by 2020 by the present government, construction industry can grow twice the rate from here in the next 5 years. Although, it is difficult to guess the percentage, there will be substantial growth for the infrastructure industry because the government is determined to improve the current scenario in the construction and infrastructure sector.

reputed corporate like Tata, Mahindra and Godrej in the real estate sector on a mega scale will make the industry transparent. Their aim will be to provide affordable housing across India. The government is also planning to permit REITs (Real Estate Investment Trusts), which will provide capital to real estate developers as well as give an opportunity to people to invest in real estate with limited funds. Implementation of these factors will help in boosting the construction and infrastructure market.

ers

Residential projects in India are on the boom with the growth in construction sector, thus providing scope for formwork solutions. In an interview with ACE Update, Ketan Shah discusses how the growth will add value and demand to aluminium formwork construction systems in the country.

MFE and competitors MFE provides superior quality and excellent technical support which differentiates it from other companies in the market. MFE is using “stir friction welding” technology which is used in premium industries like aviation, ship building, and oil and gas. Its tolerance while manufacturing panels are +/0.5 mm which is probably most stringent in the industry.

Every market had its unique dynamics, and to survive one needs to know what drives the pulse of the business. When one has to become the market leader, it requires a carefully thought strategy. Glass Wall Systems has understood that if it has to remain as a market leader in the façade industry, mere survival tactics will not suffice. It needs to create a difference and stands tall among its competition. The Indian real estate market is volatile in demand and does not help Glass Wall as a façade company to have a restricted and externally dependent production capability. Realising this very early in the business, Glass Wall Systems, over the years, added capacity and backward integration to its production facilities to

Innovation is part of inpod’s DNA inpod believes that the single most important factor or “X-Factor” is innovation that will move the construction and infrastructure sector forward. inpod also believes in innovation as part of its DNA. Original ideas and disruptive processes that create better standards of working and better quality products is what the construction industry in India truly needs. Doing the same thing again and again will achieve the same results and in fact achieve lower productivity. In Indian construction, the industry seems to be lacking in this basic proposition that doing things in new and better ways will accelerate its growth and help develop world-class products. India ranks low on the innovation scale. Fundamentally, new products indigenously produced are rarely heard of. By this inpod does not mean a change in process or an addition to what exists, but a completely new product, patented and manufactured from scratch. inpod has developed a fundamentally new product that is built quickly and built to last. With a completely Indian genesis, (“in” stands for India), one can have entire townships ready, in a fraction of the time, with a look of an international city. inpod homes are low maintenance, with a durability of over 50 years and protect against natural calamities. It has also filed for patent for its product that will establish its Indian ethos. Our government is also realising the need to innovate locally with “Make in India” theme. It is focusing on smart cities and affordable housing that will prove beneficial to the Indian consumers. This huge demand for affordable housing cannot be met by conventional materials or methods alone. We can learn a lot from developed countries where construction industry is well organized and most of the processes resemble an assembly line. Out of the box thinking to deliver better designed and more efficient homes will help our country transition to a new level of infrastructure. We see the need to innovate as critical, focus on alternate building materials and newer technologies will give us a competitive advantage. For the Indian construction industry to transition to a robust one like developed economies, adoption of new methods of application and

execution are necessary. The system needs to be made transparent, by taking the whole process online so that projects can be tracked and bottlenecks easily removed. Acceptances of newer ways of building and better managed projects with seamless designs that benefit the consumer need to be implemented. inpod has been lucky to work with clients that are innovators themselves. JSW Steel has constantly innovated to be the best in the industry. inpod recently delivered a state-of-the-art office at JSW Steel in Alibaug. The brief was to deliver an office that could be manufactured fast and provide the finest environment to work in. The office was manufactured and delivered onsite within 3 months. The end consumer had the opportunity to see exactly what they would get delivered, and there was no deviation from the standard. inpod offered JSW a durable product with low maintenance, which looks and feels luxurious. The JSW office had in-built conference room and set up for full-fledged team to start working immediately. The critical issues for its clients of immediate usability and a superior quality office were met. Because of this experience, JSW have decided to have inpod to build the entire office complex. inpod is now building 24 more pods in the next phase. inpod can deliver homes and offices out of an assembly line that will produce to the exact specifications mentioned. This is the X-Factor that other manufacturers are still to develop. n

WACKER to present innovative binders at European Coatings Show 2015 At the European Coatings Show (ECS) in Nuremberg, Germany, from April 21 to 23, 2015, the Munich-based WACKER Group will exhibit a new polymeric binder for modifying gypsum drywall products. VINNAPAS 4800 G gives gypsum-based joint fillers outstanding tensile adhesive strength on gypsum plasterboard and jointing tapes. Joint fillers finished with this new dispersible polymer powder also show excellent workability to yield particularly smooth surfaces. Furthermore, the powder’s low emissions make it ideal for joint fillers and jointing compounds used indoors. Plus, WACKER will be presenting SILRES BS POWDER S, an additive for waterproofing gypsum-based dry-mix mortars. This highly efficient powder is low in volatile organic compounds and can be quickly mixed with water without raising dust.

Gypsum joint in a dry wall

At the ECS 2015, WACKER will be premiering VINNAPAS 4800 G, a new polymeric binder specifically for gypsum-based joint fillers of the kind employed in modern drywall building. Drywall technology is very popular today because it is easy and quick to install. Polymeric binders are important ingredients in joint fillers because they give the gypsum mortar the necessary stability, adhesion, flexibility and workability. VINNAPAS 4800 G dispersible polymer powder is based on vinyl acetate and ethylene and was specially developed for enhancing gypsumbased joint-filler compounds. The new powder boosts the adhesion of grout mortars to both reinforcement strips and plasterboard. The reinforcement strips, which may be made of paper, glass fibre, or specialty nonwovens, are placed in the joints and plastered over to make the joint more stable and to prevent cracks. Stabilised with polyvinyl alcohol, joint fillers become simpler to process, and much softer and easier to apply. Once applied, it cures to yield a particularly smooth, level surface devoid of cracks or crevices. The total absence of plasticising additives in VINNAPAS 4800 G supports the formulation of low-emission end products. It is thus ideal for enhancing ecologically sound, gypsum-based dry-mix mortars for joint fillers and jointing compounds used indoors. SILRES BS POWDER S: highly efficient water repellent for gypsum dry-mix mortars Moisture can do irreparable damage to gypsum building materials. To prevent this and to protect the set gypsum mortar against moisture, powder-form water-repellent agents are admixed to the dry-mix mortar. This requires manufacturers of standard powder-form water repellents to employ carrier or encapsulation materials as a way of converting the liquid active ingredients into a powder. These additives delay the onset of the hydrophobic effect of the liquid water repellent until the mixture of gypsum mortar and water has set. The disadvantage of such additives, however, is that they are composed almost entirely of carrier material. The actual active ingredient constitutes just a few weight percent of the formulation, which is not very efficient in terms of either weight or cost.

Gypsum-based building materials formulated with SILRES BS POWDER S

The solution here is to use SILRES BS POWDER S. This new additive for dry-mix mortars does not require any additional additives, consists entirely of a novel, active powder ingredient and so is extraordinarily efficient. Just 0.2 weight per cent of SILRES BS POWDER S is enough to make gypsum building material water-repellent. Gypsum containing the new additive absorbs up to 90 per cent less water when set and can be employed in bathrooms, kitchens, stairwells and garages. Gypsum-based wall plasters, joint fillers and adhesives that have been formulated with the additive are thus suitable for use throughout house interiors. SILRES BS POWDER S consists of a methyl siliconate which is produced as a colourless, free-flowing powder by a special process. The active ingredient is inherently soluble in water, a property which confers excellent mixing properties when the mortar is being pre-pared. Nonetheless, the gypsum mortar is water-repellent as soon as it sets. SILRES BS POWDER S can be used with all types of gypsum dry-mix mortars, irrespective of the pH. It eliminates the pre-reaction times which are often needed by conventional powder-form water-repellent agents. The additive even supports the formulation of Type H1 gypsum jointing compounds that meet the highest requirements for reduced water absorption. According to Standard EN 13963:2014, which was revised last year, type H1 joint fillers must absorb no more than 5 weight per cent water after setting. n

Installing ACT-WISY at Safalyam Complex and during rainy seasons the landscape and the parking lot had a lot of water collections and a kind of flood or water filling happened. The 5,000-sq.-feet catchment area had selected. The rain in such area used to go to the drain or sewage of improper water management. • Drain related issues • No filtration systems for rain water • Accumulation of dirt in the sump. After the installation ACT-WISY recommended WFF 150 Vortex Filter for the filtration of rainwater at the Safalyam Complex. The WFF 150 Vortex Filter is for medium commercial or large residential applications and provides the highest quality of rainwater. The vertical design, the force of adhesion and the principle of free flow do the self-cleaning of the filter. Debris is discharged from the filter along with “first flush” and excess water necessary to carry debris to sewage. The filter provides the highest quality of stored rainwater with minimal maintenance.

Mounting of Vortex Fine Filter WFF 150

Vortex filtration system has vertical cylindrical type of filter. The filtered water will be collected to the storage tank using an extended pipe down to the bottom of the tank fitted with a smoothing inlet to accelerate the sedimentation process and to develop a bio film. Simultaneously, a process of oxygenation is accelerated in the filtration unit which helps to filtered rainwater to stay for a longer duration. This results in high efficiency and long-servile life, i.e. high water yield and good cleaning performance. ACT-WISY rainwater harvesting systems strictly follows the clear guidelines of DIN 1989 for rainwater technology in Germany.

Inauguration of ACT –WISY Rainwater Harvesting Filtration Systems installed at the Safalyam Complex, Palayam, Kerala in the presence of Minister for Health, V S Siva Kumar, Kerala; Fritz Poreschke, Technical Advisor, WISY AG, Germany; Mr Venugoapal, Chairman, TRIDA; and Anzar Azad, MD, ACT – WISY

ACT-WISY successfully installed modern rainwater harvesting systems at Safalyam Complex, Palayam, Thiruvananthapuram Development Authority (TRIDA). The project was proposed to Mr Venugopal, Chairman, TRIDA. The TRIDA team members were Anil Kumar, Secretary TRIDA; Promod Kumar, EE and Hari Prasad, AE. Before installation Safalyam Complex had no rainwater harvesting systems. There was a sump of having 350 cu. metres water storage capacities. Water source was tanker water and government supply. Rain water was not collected

How the filter works? The WFF 150 Filter can filter rainwater to 280 microns from a collection area up to 5,000 square feet. The rainwater from the roof enters the inlet connection in the side of the WFF through a horizontal drainpipe, spreading over the cylinder-shaped filter mesh. The inlet is designed to swirl the water in a vortex-like action around the surface of the stainless steel filter. The rainwater is drawn through the vertical mesh walls of the fine filter by adhesion, then collected and fed through the outlet to the storage tank (sump). Debris and particles too large for the filter are flushed through to the drain outlet by the action of water flowing down the surface of the filter. More than 95 per cent of the rainwater entering the WFF is filtered and collected by this principle. The ACT-WISY WFF 150 Vortex Filter should be inspected two or three times a year to ensure the natural flow of water in the filter is not obstructed. The stainless steel filter only needs to be cleaned once a year in a dishwasher or by hand washing. Depending on the debris filtered, an additional cleaning may be necessary to maximise efficiency. n

Apart from making its equipment fuel efficient, Case has worked on improving operator comfort and productivity, by

providing EX series backhoes with the most spacious cabin in the market. Also in case of its vibratory compactors, it has isolated the operator cabin from the vibrations to make it more comfortable. This coupled with minimalistic maintenance intervention in Case machines, be it from regular maintenance point of view (reliability) or longer oil change periods, makes them absolutely trouble free. All of these on a holistic scale of owning and operating cost of the Case machines, make them the highest value for money offering in the Indian CE market space and makes Case the preferred choice. n

Project Review

HOT TO COLD opens at the National Building Museum

On the heels of the summer blockbuster BIG Maze, which attracted more than 50,000 visitors, BIG returns to the National Building Museum with a behind-the-scenes look at the studio’s creative process. The exhibition, HOT TO COLD, an odyssey of architectural adaptation, travels from the hottest to the coldest parts of our planet and explores how BIG´s designs are shaped by their cultural and climatic contexts. More than 60 architectural models, mockups and prototypes are suspended at the second-floor balconies of the museum’s historic Great Hall, turning the architecture of the National Building Museum into the architecture of the exhibition. As the visitors move through the exhibition, they learn about the harsh demands of climatic extremes, where architecture becomes more about shading from the heat or sheltering from the cold. The milder or more temperate environments often leave more room for other factors, such as culture, programme, politics and legislation to shape the buildings.

february 2015

“Architecture never happens in the clinical conditions of a lab,” says Bjarke Ingels, Founding Partner, BIG. “It is always responding to a series of existing conditions – the context, the culture, the landscape, the climate. Our climate is the one thing we can’t escape – the one condition we always have to respond to. “HOT TO COLD is conceived as a colorful exploration of how architecture evolves in response to its context and climate and as an artistic contemplation of how life in return reacts to the framework created by the architecture. I can’t imagine a greater venue than the National Building Museum for this journey, looking back at our work and massive transformation over the last six years from both sides of the Atlantic.” HOT TO COLD encompasses 60 of BIG’s recent projects of which 20 are premiered for the first time, captured by Iwan Baan’s masterful photography. The exhibition also features films that describe life as it occurs within and around BIG’s buildings in a gallery on the museum’s second floor. Films

by Ila Bêka and Louise Lemoine, Kaspar Astrup Schroder, WAAITT and Squint/Opera document the life that emerges once the cranes have left and the buildings are complete. The accompanying catalog by Taschen is designed in collaboration with Grammy Award-winning graphic artist Stefan Sagmeister and available now at the National Building Museum Shop in person and online, including pre-order on Amazon. Curator Susan Piedmont-Palladino says that BIG extended its singular design sensibility to the creation of this exhibition. “What’s so special about HOT TO COLD is that BIG has perceived the National Building Museum more as a site for a project, rather than as a venue for an exhibition,” she explains. “That means that the sunlight, the sounds and the sights of the great hall will all be part of the context of the display, just as they are for a building in the city. BIG has a very distinctive voice, and our visitors will have a very direct experience as if the architect is talking, telling stories directly to them.” n

Enjoy winters with heated swimming pool Homes are being designed in more innovative ways than one. People are looking to bring in the five elements into balance and make it a blissful experience that is not only beautiful to look at and wonderful to spend time in, but actually has a positive effect on the health and well-being of the inhabitants. If we talk about water bodies in our home, then instantly swimming pools come to our mind. But generally swimming or pools are related to summers, in winters either they remain dry or are cleaned once a while. Due to this many people consider pools more as a liability rather than an asset. But things have changed, gone are the days when usage of swimming pool was confined to only summer. Now one can make use of the swimming pool throughout the year. Financially also, this makes sense, whole year you are paying pool maintenance cost, so why shouldn’t the benefits of the pool availed in winters also. All this is made possible by the latest heating systems. There are three basic types of pool heating systems: solar pool heaters, heat pump pool heaters and gas pool heaters. The best system for pool is determined by numerous factors including one’s needs, desires, budget and physical layout of the pool and house. Solar pool heater Solar pool heaters are best for recreational pool use and recommended for those who are comfortable with pool temperatures ranging from the low to mid-80s. Solar works year round in southern climates, and extends the season in northern climates. There may be periods during inclement weather that the pool is too cool to use; however, several sunny days will bring the pool back to a comfortable temperature. Proper sizing is critical for good performance. Heat pump pool heaters For those who enjoy swimming regardless of the weather, a heat pump is the recommended method. It is also the preferred method for therapy or athletic trainers, and also when a home is not “solar

feasible” (i.e. solar will not fit on roof). A heat pump, when properly sized, can maintain any desired pool temperature between 80-90 C, regardless of outside weather conditions. A heat pump will work when the outside air temperature is above 45 C. Gas pool heaters Gas is best for heating pools for short periods of time. Gas pool heaters are effective, but expensive to operate. They are ideal for quickly heating the pool when guests or children are visiting or for a second home where the pool is not heated on a regular basis. Gas heaters are generally oversized and can easily maintain any desired temperature regardless of the weather. It is also an ideal heater or backup heater for a spa. “The heating systems are easy to maintain,” says Vivek Mishra, MD and Technical Head, Premium Pools. “The cost of installation for heat pumps is around Rs.4.53 lakh and of heaters are Rs.1.49 lakh. There is no major maintenance cost involved. Electricity consumption is also quiet low.” Each pool and home is unique. The size of the pool heater is based on several factors, including the size and shape of the pool, pool shading (i.e. trees, screen enclosure), geographic location, swimming season and pool temperature desired, windy conditions, and for solar, the direction of the roof (south, east, west or flat). The size of the heater will determine the temperature, swimming season, and length of time to heat the pool. It is very important to properly size the heater for good performance. Keep in mind that a thermal pool cover is recommended for all heating systems. Heating a pool without a cover is like heating a house without a roof. The heat just goes right out the top. Without a pool cover, the cost of operating a heat pump or gas heater is doubled, and a solar heater’s effectiveness is dramatically decreased. For convenience, a cover roller may be added to ease placement and removal of the cover. If a pool cover is not be used, the size of the heater must be increased by 100 per cent. n

since then, we have not looked for any other brand; such is the trust for Volvo machines. Today our fleet includes Volvo excavators, rock breakers, blue metal crushers, sand plants, etc. Having the same Volvo DNA we originally had four EC210 machines and one EC240 machine, which were joined by two EC210 & one EC220DL machine over the time.” He says, “We rely on Volvo machines for a variety of tasks. Loading and breaking aggregates, overburden removal and surface cleaning in the quarry are few of the major tasks Volvo machines prove their mettle every day. They offer the same efficiency and excellence from day one to the last day of use. No other machine comes close, when reliability matters.” Add to that with 20 per cent more productivity, zero breakdowns, operator comfort and safety and a brand that is recognised world over for its strength and endurance. In this connection, I must appreciate the support from Advanced Construction Technologies Pvt. Ltd. round the clock. I am sure nobody would even look for other brand but Volvo, because they’re worth the investment.” n

6th Annual

SICI 2015

Sustainability in Design & Construction India 25th & 26th February 2015, The Leela Mumbai Hotel Conference Overview:

Key Benefits

Buildings consume about 35% of total energy in India alone, and as a result of rapid economic and population growth, this consumption is likely to rise at an alarming rate. Indian cities are among the worlds most vulnerable to impacts of climate change. With the rising demand of buildings it will be mandatory for all state governments to implement by 2017 the minimum requirements for energy efficient design and construction set by the central government to meet the challenges of depleting resources, increased urbanization and rapid construction. Sustainability in design & construction was introduced since 2010 by Nispana discussing varied topics like inclusion of aesthetics in built and Un built spaces, holistic construction, retrofitting and energy efficiency and all the key topics on sustainability. Nispana is proud to announce the 6th Annual SICI 2015 Conference in Mumbai on the 25th and 26th
