The Road to Revival: State to the Rescue The road to the revival of the road construction equipment sector akin to the construction equipment sector rests a lot on government sponsored projects. From state inaction in 2013 to state in action in 2020, it will be interesting to see how this plays out. road construction and construction equipment industry. But post 2018 a slowdown akin to what the industry witnessed in 2013 has come into play which has dampened the market sentiments. Jasmeet Singh, Head - Corporate Communication and Corporate Relations, JCB India Ltd points out, “After a strong 2018, the earthmoving and construction equipment Industry saw demand compression in 2019. The slowdown was attributed to a variety of factors. 2019 being an election year contributed to the overall stress along with other challenges around liquidity and fresh investments.” Though the industry thrives on optimism which was evident at the Excon fair last year the road construction equipment manufacturers continue to remain in a cautious mode
onnectivity is an essential element of our individual lives. In our built environment too connectivity is important for growth and development. There are number of factors which facilitates this connectivity and roads play a major part in establishing it. Connecting cities to towns, towns to villages and countries to nations, it brings to life an eco-system where businesses can thrive and the economy can prosper.
Hemant Mathur, Hemant Mathur, Asst VPSales and Marketing , Tata Hitachi Construction Machinery Co Pvt Ltd points out “To put it very simply, I think the markets have bottomed out. The general atmosphere at Excon – and based on the inputs given by the Minister of Road Transport and Highways of India, Nitin Gadkari and Chief Minister of Karnataka BS Yediyuruppa - the slump in the construction sector will be arrested. The pace at which the sector picks up remains to be seen but the sentiment seems to be improving. In 2020 we’re looking at a 14 per cent growth in turnover compared to 2019.
So it’s no wonder that each passing government lays a lot of emphasis on road construction and infrastructure. Likewise the road construction equipment sector banks heavily on the government’s outlook and policies on roads and infrastructure building. Back in 2014 when the BJP acquired power by a huge margin, the manifesto had a clear focus on roads and highways, this focus lead to ache din for all the stakeholders for the

industry becomes a direct beneficiary. Besides the scale of infrastructural developments also gains momentum. Apart from bottlenecks in execution of projects, there is a strain on finances, so some relief in terms of lending is also required. Much of the optimism which prevails is directly connected to the government’s ambition of investing Rs 100 lakh crore in the infrastructure segment over the next five years. It also banks on the fact that infrastructure will continue to be a key growth driver and address pertinent issues like job creation. Jasmeet says “The recent announcement of Rs 100 lakh crore in Infrastructure over the next five years is welcome as it comes at a time when the Industry has built capacity and capability over the years, and parts of which have remained under utilised in the immediate past. a key growth driver in the investment lead growth philosophy. The Construction Equipment Industry is critical in fulfilling the $5 trillion economy dream of India and as an industry, we are hopeful that with government’s consistent support, all the current hurdles and challenges will soon un-lock significant opportunities in the road equipment and construction sector.” But to achieve the growth targets as specified by the government. The operations of the entire supply chain needs to be streamlined and disciplined. Wilfried Theissen, Managing Director, Putzmeister India rightly points out “While the country has set very ambitious targets, there are delays in awarding of projects due to land acquisition and other issues. Once projects are underway, payments to contractors get delayed. This impacts the entire ecosystem.” Like the rest of the construction equipment sector, the concerns of delayed payments has been a matter of concern for the road construction equipment sector too. Likewise the unavailability of funds for potential buyers post the IL&FS crisis was also a major concern. Though there has been an attempt to ease the situation to address the issue, a lot needs to be done. E Moses, Vice President (Sales & Marketing), Kobelco Construction Equipment (India) Pvt Ltd says “NBFCs plays a very active role in the road lconstruction and infrastructure sector. So a sound policy on NBFCs is desired so that they can function properly. The funds for projects have to be released on time as well. The government should also think about how to get the work done on mutually agreed terms and norms. The govt should also come up with better GST approach for the machines used in the construction industry. The road to the revival of the road construction sector rests a lot on government sponsored projects. From state inaction in 2013 to state in action in 2020, it will be interesting to see how this plays out. Having said that building roads alone is not going to address the issue, full scale cities and metropolis have to come into existence. Our colonial rulers designed eight metropolises to facilitate their business goals. Sadly 60 years post-independence we as an independent nation continue to thrive on those metropolises alone. If we are to realize our goal of becoming a developed nation an all-round development of our infrastructure segment is desired. A development where the roads and pathways will function as the roots of the kalpavriksha that our n cities, towns and villages can become.

the overall stress along with other challenges around liquidity and fresh investments. A significant area of opportunity for recovery path is to have more growth drivers such as other potential sectors like irrigation, ports and water conservation in the industry. The government has been cognizant of this and thus, has been taking steps to revive growth. With government announcing significant financial outlay in projects such as roads, irrigation, railways and also importantly in the rural economy, there seems to be opportunities for enormous growth. The importance of developing infrastructure for growth of the economy is critical. Any project has both, immediate as well as long term benefits in terms of employment and demand consumption. The recent announcement of `100 lakh crore in infrastructure over the next five years is welcome as it comes at a time when the Industry has built capacity and capability over the years, and parts of which have remained under utilised in the immediate past.
Additionally, the company has brought a new Telehandler range in India, upgraded to the allnew global side engine design. The new side engine machines are designed to give the operator greater on site visibility, thus aiding safety on the site. Two brand new models of Skid Steer Loaders, the SSL 135 and SSL 155, introduced in 2019 have the best-in-class performance and fuel efficiency. With 25+ attachments for different industrial jobs, an increase in fuel efficiency of up to 5 per cent with SSL 135 and up to 10 per cent with SSL 155, improved safety through 270 degree visibility, 46 per cent bigger cabin spaces, the machines are best suited for enhanced productivity, comfort and safety. Some silent features across the range are enhanced fuel efficiency, variable performance capacity, and smart machine management through LiveLink - an advanced telematics technology that benefits operators in better fleet management through remote monitoring. The technology enables transmission of information on machine’s health including service, operations and security, to the operator or owner. It is heartening that the announced infra spends are in projects that are spread across power, renewables, roads, railways and urban development and will help create more growth drivers for our Industry. The investment cycle needs to re-instated, and large infrastructure projects are vital to achieve that. Thus, it is critical that the momentum of construction keeps going. Energizing the PPP (Public Private Partnership) model and a re-look at asset remonetization can play an important role in addressing funding related constraints. NBFCs will continue to play an important part for financing our equipment and thus the regulatory framework for NBFC growth will also be essential. Infrastructure will continue to be a key growth driver in the investment lead growth philosophy. Having said that, Tata Hitachi’s recent venture into Backhoe loaders continue to keep us in good health despite the downturn says Hemant Mathur, Asst VP-Sales and Marketing Tata Hitachi Construction Machinery Co Pvt Ltd
hat are the hurdles you see for faster construction of roads in the interiors of the country? The immediate challenge is the BSIV implementation for wheeled equipment effective from October 1, 2020. The industry is gearing up to meet this deadline with upgraded products. This is a very significant step that is going to see the country’s emission norms leapfrogging to just one cycle behind the developed countries norms. Naturally this brings its challenges with our customers who must adapt to the new norms and ways of working. But we believe, with customers using the current range of tippers - which have SCR emission control technology - it will be easier to train them to adapt to BSIV norms. Of course, the continuously changing regulatory regime is another challenge to adapt on tight time frames. We, through ICEMA, are continuously engaging with the government so that there is a reasonable time frame for the industry to comply with the change. The other challenge is of trained manpower to operate these machines. Tata Hitachi, along with other members of the industry, have invested in operator training schools, where the correct and efficient way of using machines to capacity and productively is being taught along with upgrading the skill levels of operators. What kind of new technology and innovations have you utilized in your products? We have consistently enhanced the features of our offerings. Our machines come with numerous attachments: the super long attachment and the quarry adaptation for the machines are configurations we have

introduced recently. We have also infused the magic of IoT in our machines, which will provide additional safety and help in preemptive maintenance of the machines. Our Wheel Loader too ensures energy savings. The TL 340H uses the same hydraulic technology as is used in excavators. Traditionally, a wheel loader is made with differentials, with mechanical transmission and axles which lead to significant transmission losses. The TL 340H is fitted with a hydrostatic transmission which can run with a 100 - 103 horsepower engine whereas similar products by our competitors need 120 horsepower to do the same job. So that’s a revolutionary design in terms of cost savings and is working very well. In the current market scenario, how do you see Tata Hitachi progressing? Along with the market, we too have taken a hit. But typically when a downturn happens, it’s a chance to improve ourselves too. We look at it as an opportunity to downscale, improvise, be flexible and be more efficient. For Tata Hitachi, the excavator business is still the mainstay of the business. Shinrai the Backhoe loader, has just started, we were a very small player in that business and there is massive room for growth. So we are looking at 60-70 per cent growth from a very small business here.

Our spare parts business is not so affected because the machines are out in the field. So that it helps sustain the profitability to some extent. That’s the advantage of having 50,000 machines in the field. What is your forecast for the market in 2020? To put it very simply, I think the markets have bottomed
What products are you planning to launch in 2020 and in the medium term? In the medium term, we will be launching the four wheel drive Backhoe Loader very shortly. In wheel loaders we will be launching the five cubic meter wheel loader, but that’ll take about 18 more months for a commercial launch. It’s in the final stages of pro to typing and testing. We are also looking at a 30 ton excavator. Currently we have a 20-22 ton excavator and we have a 37 ton excavator. The 30 ton excavator too will be made available sometime next year. Hitachi has one of the widest range of excavators . We bring these machines selectively in India because we are very concerned about the product support that we can provide. Depending on the market for the machines in question we introduce them at the right time. This helps us in providing efficient after sales support which matches up to our global standards. n

Neil Woodfin, VP CE AMEA and CE Global Alliances, Case Construction
ow has your experience been at Excon 19? I have been really pleased with the responses we have got at Excon and especially with 2019 being a difficult year for India. We had quality customers come through at our expo.
Neil Woodfin, VP CE AMEA and CE Global Alliances, Case Construction, talks about his overall experience of Excon and India being a major market player.
Could you brief us about your product portfolio? If we look at our available portfolio, we’re number one in compactors; we’re number two in TLB. We used that as a platform to launch the Grader back in 2016. And, that has been a great success. And then the following year, we launched the Dozer. In 2019, we have launched the excavator (Crawler Excavator CX220C), which is being manufactured in India, and it’s been designed to accommodate for the Indian requirements. The Grader and Dozer have very quickly attained number two and number three position within their respective marketplaces we have received
a great customer response. I am optimistic that Crawler Excavator CX220C will do the same. How important is Indian market for your company? India is really important for us and we have been here for over 30 years. Case India has got a strong customer base, strong database, sales and service organisation here. Some of our most competitive manufacturing facilities in the world are located in India, and as a result of that we’re able to produce products at the cost point that allows us to be competitive. And that’s tough to do in India because it’s such a price sensitive market. But we don’t just produce products for India, we produce products here for export markets and excavator design will be sold into the Indian market but also will be exported to South East Asia, Africa, Middle East, and Russia. We’ve also invested in CNH Capital, which is a new financial service. As one of the major manufacturers, what are your expectations from the government in 2020? I was very encouraged by what Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways of India had to say at Excon. The fact that there is going to be continued commitment to invest in the construction industry, through infrastructure and through residential and commercial construction is good news for us Continued to 28 g

hat range of products is Kobelco offering for efficient and fast construction of roads under different geographical conditions? Kobelco has a range of excavators, the mini excavator range starts from 3.0 ton. In the excavator range, we offer a 14 ton excavator and it goes all the way up to 38 ton for road specific projects. Depending on the scope of the work at hand, we encourage and guide our customers to make the right selection to get optimum results. What are the latest innovations and technologies in your road construction product range? All our machines launched in India have been upgraded with latest technology. These machines are silent and decibel levels are very low. The comfort for the operator is excellent and it also has an air conditioned cabin for the operator to work comfortably. In terms of technology, the machines use highest level ofMechatronics. The engine and hydraulic components combination works as per the required load. So, if there is a lighter load, it will use a lighter cycle and if it’s harder work then it will switch as per requirements. Our equipment centre also features Geoscan, which monitors

the performance of monitor and can be accessed from remote locations. What are the hurdles you see for faster construction of roads in the interiors of the country? The issue of land acquisition is quite common and known to everybody. The other challenges include skilled manpower and ensuring there are zero accidents. Making technology affordable so that it is not limited to the metros alone is another challenge. As a company, we feel people in the interiors require access to affordable technology so that they too can partake in the growth that the country is witnessing in terms of roads and other infrastructure. What are some policy changes you expect from the government? NBFCs plays a very active role in the road

government should also think about how to get the work done on mutually agreed terms and norms. The govt should also come up with better GST approach for the machines used in the construction industry. So, what is your outlook for the current year? 2019 was quite discouraging. The government held back investments on key infrastructure projects. The lack of funds posed as a big problem for all the players in the road and construction sector. Given the present circumstances, I feel that the industry will register a 10 per cent growth. I am not very optimistic about 2020, a lot depends on the measures taken in the budget.

What are your export plans and also new product ranges that Kobelco is coming up with? Catering to the Indian market is our first priority. Having said that, Kobelco also exports its machines to countries like Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Middle East, Sri Lanka and some African countries. We are also coming up with machines which are high on technology and utility moreover they will be priced taking into account our existing economy model. n
What kind of steps are you taking for training of operators? We’ve got an intensive training program and we are constantly training people all the time to make sure that they can get the most out of our products and drive productivity for the clients and owners of those companies. It’s an important part of what we do. We don’t just sell equipment; we sell the complete package which comprises all the training the customer needs. What is your take on IoT and can it be a value addition? We’re living in the age of information. These devices are there to provide information so people can make informed decisions. And different stakeholders require different kind of information to be able to make those informed decisions. So the operator, and the owner may need to be able to see how productive that been, and how unproductive it’s been, it has probably been in the ideal mode because other products required to complete the job was unavilable. I think giving them visibility of how efficient the work site is very important. It also helps them plan their tasks efficienctly and ultimately increases the n productivity.

GS Caltex India celebrates a decade of achievements in India
G GS Caltex recently celebrated its 10th anniversary in India and is going from strength to strength. Rajesh Nagar, MD & CEO, GS Caltex India talks about the organisation’s journey so far and future plans for the Indian market.
Rajesh Nagar, MD & CEO, GS Caltex India
S Caltex has completed 10 years in India, how has the journey been so far in terms of market response to your products and what are the growth prospects? GS Caltex, headquartered in Seoul, South Korea, is a leader in the petroleum, lubricant and petrochemical businesses. It was founded in 1967, as a 50-50 joint venture between GS Energy, South Korea and Chevron Corporation, USA. It operates the fourth largest refinery in the world and is the largest producer of aromatics products globally. The company is a major exporter of petroleum products including lubricants. Building on this competitiveness the company decided to venture into large overseas markets like India, Russia, China and many other countries. The Indian subsidiary was established in Mumbai, India on February 2, 2010. Indian lubricant market is one of the most competitive and toughest markets in the world. For a relatively young company like ours, we have managed to make our own place in the Indian lubricant industry on the strength of our superior technology and products. In fact, we might be the only company in India to manufacture high quality premium lubricants using only group II plus/group III base oils imported from our own refinery. However, we understand that the growth momentum has been little subdued in the last year. We can certainly not be insulated from the market or OEMs when economy conditions are challenging. We at GS Caltex at the same time had been exploring new territories within India and overseas. Therefore we were able to make up for tough conditions in domestic market with new accounts and markets within India and overseas market through exports. We ended the 2019 on a happy note.

When it comes to lubricants, what are some of the key parameters to look at before making the right choice? Customers now demand products that would reduce their down-time and thus reduce the cost of ownership. The highperformance lubricants from GS Caltex offer ultimate reliability at all temperatures, lower oil consumption, significantly lower fuel consumption and specifically extended service intervals. Whenever engines run freer and more reliably, operating costs are lower if only because they consume less; just one per cent lower fuel consumption means, depending on operating conditions, fuel savings of several thousand rupees per vehicle per year. Every penny saved is penny earned; our constant effort to help our customers to reduce the cost of ownership has been highly appreciated and has helped us grow. Given your vast product portfolio, which range of products has been more successful and commercially viable? We have a wide array of products to cater to the ever-growing demand of cutting edge products from our customers. We have seen phenomenal growth especially in the automobile segment. GS Caltex believes in offering lubrication solutions rather than products alone as it is the combination of products and scientific recommendation, service based on a customer’s specific needs that best help to meet customer’s

requirements in a holistic manner. Hence we have been quite successful not only growing in the business but also in increasing the brand awareness and penetration across segments in OEM, industrial, infrastructure and retail. What kind of alliances do you have? GS Caltex and Chevron have significant presence in OEMs globally. It helped us to develop relationships with global OEM’s from our initial days in India. We have always worked as a solution provider to our OEM partners rather than being just a supplier. Our relationship with OEMs since inception has helped to challenge our boundaries and meet high standards expected of us from OEMs. In the last decade, we have built strong partnerships with global OEM’s viz. Volvo, Hyundai, Ajax, Amman, Doosan, Kolher etc. How much focus is given to technological innovation for development of new products for the future? Research and Development is the core strength of GS Caltex in developing product competitiveness for lubricants and polymers. GSC R&D facility located near Seoul in South Korea has developed many awardwinning lubricants to forge partnerships with major global OEMs. Our future ready product portfolio is a major dimension of our growth strategy.
At Excon 2019, GS Caltex India showcased its futuristic portfolio meeting BSVI standards which includes BS VI compatible engine oils Kixx HDX Euro CK-4 15W-40, long life high performance hydraulic oils Kixx HVL range and high performance fully synthetic gear oil Kixx GearSyn GL-5 75W-90. Recently, we have also launched our polymer product portfolio in India. GS Caltex India will continue to invest in new technologies and superior products catering to existing and new segments with the objective of adding value to our customers and stakeholders. n

Union Budget 2020
The union budget comes at a time when Indian economy is going through a slowdown and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced new projects for the infrastructure sector.
Infra Budget 2020
T
he much-anticipated and eagerly awaited union budget was announced on February 1, 2020. India by all accounts is going through a slowdown in recent times and budget delivered by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman tried to come up with the plan to tackle challenges in various sectors. The budget speech lasted approximately for a record 2 hours and 40 minutes (and it was still incomplete) and FM talked about infrastructure, agriculture, construction, aviation, railway, welfare schemes, health sector and gave an outline for projects and plans for the next 12 months. The budget proposes to provide Rs 1.7 lakh crore for transport infrastructure in 2021. The union minister also said during her speech of allocating Rs 27,300 crore for industry and commerce. To boost infrastructure, Nirmala Sitharaman said 9,000 km of economic corridor will be set up. Accelerated development of highways will be undertaken and Delhi--Mumbai expressway and two other projects to be completed by 2023. Monetisation of 12 lots of highway bundles of over 6,000 km before 2024. The reaction from the industry of the union budget generally evoked a positive response and hoped that the new policies will relaunch India’s growth story. Ranganath NK, Area Managing Director, Indo Region, Grundfos said, “We welcome this year’s budget which sharply focuses on issues that propels the growth of aspirational India. Addressing the challenges of severe water stress in the nation

as one of its top most agenda, this budget gets to the bottom of things by proposing comprehensive measures for 100 water-stressed areas. Given that the budget also aims to empower famers by increasing their dependence on off-grid solutions with solarised grid-connected pumps through the PM Kusum Scheme, I think that this will act as a catalyst to sustainable irrigation solutions across the country. This abundant allocation in agriculture is likely to positively rural development.” He also added, “We are greatly excited to see the budget allocation for Jal Jeevan Mission. Also the foreseen investment in the renewable energy sector will enable the government to achieve its national action plan on climate change.” Anshul Singhal, Managing Director, Welspun One also welcomed the union budget and lauded the union govt’s plans to boost the transport infrastructure. He said, “The simplified personal tax regime and effective reduction in tax rates for the sizeable middle class will create a definite upswing in consumption. It’s also heartening to see the government’s continued impetus to the country’s transport infrastructure with the 1.2 trillion rupee proposal to enhance our trunk infrastructure. Both these will have a very positive impact on warehousing demand and supply. The national logistics policy, which the FM touched upon, will minimise the development hurdles and help the overall sector and economy.”

Union Budget 2020
We welcome this year’s budget which sharply focuses on issues that propels the growth of aspirational India. Ranganath NK, Area Managing Director, Indo Region, Grundfos
The government’s continued emphasis and focus on improving infrastructure in the country is evident from the various plans announced. Wilfried Theissen, Managing Director, Putzmeister India
Prakasan, COO, Sterling & Wilson, MEP Business gave his insights on the budget and was hopeful of revival of the Indian economy. “The big infrastructure push in the union budget 2020 is a big step towards boosting the economy and the sector. Government announced a huge spend over 102 trillion rupees ($1.44 trillion) on roads, ports, airports, irrigation and other infrastructure over the next five years. This is definitely a demand revival step and will create an environment for sustainable growth in the sector. This budget is a big growth driver and proposes to step up the construction and MEP industry sectors in the country. I am definitely positive that this budget is going to work for the MEP sector,” said Prakasan.
40
Of the total 1.7 lakh crore allocation for the transport infrastructure, there needs to be a significant outlay for urban transportation infrastructure covering public transportation facilities (metro rail, light rail, trams, urban roadway interchanges, bus transport). Adequate focus should also be on improving the quality of life of daily commuters in urban centers by providing safe and efficient feeder networks and enhanced pedestrian facilities including wide sidewalks, landscaping and public conveniences. Overall, the budget is a step towards a strong, healthy and prosperous India having a positive long-term impact on the economy.” Wilfried Theissen, Managing Director, Putzmeister India gave a balanced view on the budget and said, “After a record year in 2018, the industry and indeed the economy witnessed a downturn in 2019. One of the biggest issues being faced by the construction industry was the availability of finance and liquidity. We expected the budget to address these challenges. 100 per cent tax expemptions for soverign wealth funds investing in infrastructure projects and enhanced FPI limits should result in increased foreign capital infusion over the medium to long term. Increased foreign investment will also bring with it increased pressure to deliver projects professionally and on time. This should boost the shift to mechanised construction methods, it bodes well for the RMC segment and OEMs.”
Though, there were some contradicting views from the industry as well regarding the budget. Kshitish Nadgauda, Senior Vice President | Managing Director – Asia, Louis Berger gave his opinion on the challenges regarding execution of projects. He said, “Continued planned investment in transportation infrastructure including roads and highways, aviation, urban metro rail and high speed intercity rail is a welcome step. The nation’s economic development and growth is heavily dependent on robust infrastructure, and it is thus commendable to see the sustained impetus through announcements made today by the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
He further added, “The extension announced on the partial credit guarantee scheme to cover floated to help HFCs and NBFCs tide over their liquidity crisis shows that the Government does indeed recognise the ongoing stresses in this segment. Whether this helps the industry in the short term remains to be seen. What the budget has not done is help alleviate any of the industry’s challenges in the immediate to short term. The Government has put the ball squarely in the industry’s court to find solutions that will keep business rolling. The Government’s continued emphasis and focus on improving infrastructure in the country is evident from the various plans announced. And we at Putzmeister are fully prepared to help India meet these objectives.”
However, special attention needs to be paid to both design and construction to boost safety and quality, building world-class transportation facilities. This would also bring the overall life-cycle costs down for these projects. Along the 9,000 km economic corridors, new townships/nodes should be developed to create economic growth centers that would stem the flow into existing major cities.
The union budget comes at a very critical juncture and govt headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has time and again reiterated that he wants India to become a $5 trillion dollar economy by 2024. As from the above opinions, Indian industry has given a mixed response and whether the budget becomes a success or failure will be determined over the n next 12 months.

Everest is keen to aid India’s high speed railway projects
H
PV Ramdev, Managing Director, Everest Engineering Equipment Pvt Ltd
ow was your experience at Excon 2019? What products did you display? We were quite happy with the response that we received at Excon 2019. At the fair we displayed the men and material hoist, passenger hoist and rack and pinion construction platforms which GJJ invented after decades of doing their R&D.
Everest has forayed into the heavy machineries segment with the intent of helping India in realising its high speed railway projects says PV Ramdev, Managing Director, Everest Engineering Equipment Pvt Ltd.
GJJ is the leader in high speed, medium speed and low speed hoists in the world market with a total population of about 64,000 units. GJJ eliminated the trailing power cables and innovated special bidirectional BUSBARS successfully. GJJ utilises the NORD Mechanism along with Siemens VFD. The speeds specified in GJJ catalogues are the true speed achieved with full load. GJJ can offer 46m/min, 63m/min, 96m/
min, and even 120m/min (2m/sec) hoist according to the height of building. These hoists can be used for 20 years without any major troubles/maintenance. That is the advantage and reliability of GJJ hoist to become the preferred brand for the contractors. Today, every construction like multi-storey buildings, cement, steel, power plants, refinery etc. are planned in fast track and need such machineries to achieve targets on time.
What are your plans for 2020? Everest is foraying into the heavy machineries segment which includes straddle carriers, gantry cranes, segment transporters and segment launchers from 100t to 1200t. We have decided to foray into this segment keeping in mind India’s focus on high speed railway projects, Metro projects and bridges. One of the dream projects of the existing government is the 240 km Mumbai – Ahmedabad bullet train project. To be able to realise this dream heavy machines will be required. Likewise these machines will also find immense use in construction of the metro rail projects and big flyovers.
Do you believe that there will be cost advantages once you start manufacturing in India? The cost of logistics will come down and

then 7.5 per cent custom duty can also be eliminated. The manufacturing cost in China is also a bit higher than India now. Though the price of land, electricity and water is subsidised in China, the price of skilled workers is almost double as compared to India. So once we start manufacturing in India, I can promise to our existing and future customers that the price of our indigenously manufactured products will be less as compared to the existing price tag.
When it comes to your financial performance in 2019, what is your take? We are closing this financial year with a hike of around 20-25 per cent turnover and we expect another 20 per cent increase in the next financial year. All things said, we also have to take into account the upcoming budget and the plans government has in mind. But I do believe that the government is focused on the construction and infrastructure segment and the sector will witness growth. How do you see the availability of skilled workers and the role of automation in the construction sector? Automation is necessary for the industry. It reduces the downtime of the machineries and increases the productivity. It also saves electricity and fuel consumption. But at the same time it is necessary to develop the skilled manpower and maintain such advanced technologies at work, which we are doing continuously. n

What are the challenges faced while selecting an MHE solution for a project? On large and complex projects, we want to provide our customers a proper solution. Many of our customers appreciate this, and so our best meetings are where we jointly brain-storm, ideate, and iterate revisions to improve our material movement and storage solutions. While this is fun and rewarding, and the learnings are invaluable, the innumerable iterations in layouts and product selection create a lot of cycles in our presales engineering team. All this upfront engineering also takes time, which becomes challenging to manage within our customers tight timelines. And then after all this upfront fun and engineering
investment, these projects get put on hold by customers as has been the case through the current downturn in economy. This by far is the biggest challenge. n

The crane operator must be given sufficient warning to decide when the crane should be put out of service because of risks due to high winds and his inability to control the load. It is likely that many fatalities could have been avoided with proper wind condition monitoring. ACD’s wind velocity monitor continuously monitors wind speed and provides two limit switches with one changeover relay contact per setting. Electronic vibration switch is designed as direct replacement of mechanical vibration switches. These mechanical switches being used in yester years have very little merit and served the purpose when the requirement was not stringent. As they rely on large impacts or inertia (both acceleration) nuisance tripping during start-up is a common problem. ACD vibration switches can be directly installed in place of mechanical vibration switches and offer immense advantages. The basic sensor is piezo electric accelerometer which has no moving parts. These electronically integrate the acceleration signal giving velocity signal. Vibration could be controlled very precisely with graduated controls. Built in electronic delay takes care of startup and other spurious signals. Remote reset is another positive advantage. Some of the applications are Cooling Towers, Centrifuges, Large Motors and Generators, Compressors, VSI Crushers, Naval Vessels etc.
The device is quite useful for protection of VSI Crushers. ACD’s Wind Velocity Monitor / Switch was prompted by some serious crane accidents during erections of tall constructions, where wind conditions appear to have been a major contributing factor. ow do you see the present market situation for your construction solutions? The construction technology solutions market is evolving and today the industry is much more aware of the benefits that technology brings. After witnessing first-hand how our products impact the efficiency and productivity of the machine in question, most of these prospective clients turn into our loyal customers. We also offer pro-bono for new entrants. We are optimistic that 2020 will be a breakthrough year for us. What are the major challenges in India to implement industrial IoT? Like with any new technology, the initial adoption is a key challenge to be overcome. But it is important to understand that contemporary infrastructure projects are becoming increasingly complex, so the formulaic methods of executing projects will not work anymore. Technology has to be utilised to streamline a number of factors which are involved in the execution of a project. The utiliastion of Industrial IoT can oversee the entire lifecycle of a project in question, right from project execution to its maintenance. It can augment efficiency and help in reducing the execution and maintenance cost of the project. Do you believe that our expertise in Indian hardware and software is sufficient for an industrial revolution? The software expertise is certainly more than sufficient. We have some of the best minds in the industry. In fact, at Trimble alone we have 1,200 people who are devising our business solutions and constantly upgrading them to cater to the industry demand. On the hardware side, it’s improving, especially with the ongoing trade war between China and US, many

hardware manufacturers are looking at India as a good option. But we need more skills as far as the usage of some of these technologies is concerned. This can be addressed by providing the right amount of training to be able to take full advantage of the equipment. For example, if we put machine control technology on a bulldozer, the end user needs to be able to utilize the digitally enhanced machine effectively. Operative knowledge is essential to view or upload any data. Even to look at the console and understand whether they are within the defined parameters, the right skill set is needed.

What are the major strategic alliances you have with construction OEMs? Globally Trimble’s alliance with Caterpillar is very well known. Our alliance has led to the origin of Machine Control and Virtual Site solutions. Machine control means implementing digital technologies on the machine that makes the machine work more efficiently and helps construction firms implement digital construction methods for improved productivity. Virtual site solutions enable the machine health and machine performance to be monitored closely and then relayed back to the operator or the contractor for efficient site management. In addition, we work with a lot of third party OEMs and machine manufacturers because the technologies that we have

are generic in nature and can work with different machines in the construction ecosystem. How are your solutions cost-effective and what kind of ROI is expected from each quarter? The value digital construction delivers is huge. If the volumes are small, the price is going to be higher. As the volumes pick up, the prices come down. More than price or cost, we believe that when our customers deploy this technology, the ROI is almost instantaneous like increase in productivity and material movement, 30-40 per cent reduction in rework, high-quality output and very tight tolerances can be built so that the amount of material that is used is optimal. n

hat are the different types of roofing solutions offered by you and its advantages? Onduline offers lightweight roofing sheets, roofing tiles and polycarbonate roofing sheets in the Indian market. The lightweight and water proofing aspects of our products offer significant benefits to end-customers. Moreover, all Onduline products offer excellent thermal and acoustic comfort as well as high wind resistance of up to 314 km/ hr. Onduline products contain no metal or asbestos and are safe and eco-friendly. How do you select an appropriate roofing solution for a project? With a roof making up 40 per cent of a project’s overall design, selecting the right roofing can have a huge impact. Some of the key points to keep in mind while selecting the right roofing for your project are the design of the roof, roof pitch, features and benefits offered by the roofing system, warranty offered by the product and of course costing. Another important factor that is often overlooked is the weight of the product. The weight of roofing materials is always a concern, because the structural framing of a roof is only designed to carry a certain amount of weight. Lightweight materials like Onduline is easier to load onto the roof and handle during installation. How new techniques and innovations have brought about changes in roofing? Roofs have remained the same for decades with little advancement with respect to their functionality. The key challenges around roofing are waterproofing, thermal comfort and durability. Certainly, what has changed is in the area of aesthetics and durability. One apt example

Project Name and Location Tata Steel’s CRMT Laboratory, Jamshedpur Application Testing Lab - Roof Top Extensions Background Located in Jamshedpur, Tata Steel has a group of laboratories which provide scientific and metallurgic testing and investigations for a wide range of scientific services. These mechanical and chemical testing help establish quality of raw material like iron ore, coal etc. Since R&D centers typically demand constant upgrades with respect to safety, efficiency and more room for research works; Tata Steel wanted to renovate the existing set up and expand it further for their future research needs. Customer Requirement The CRMT Lab had an existing RCC roof which was to be extended for extra space. A roof top building for their Metallurgical section for over 500 Sq.m. was to be installed. The building also required a facelift for their front facing entrance. Tata BlueScope Steel with its rich experience in LGFS solution was preferred for setting up the structure. technology was an ideal choice. Being advanced, light weight framing structures; SMARTBUILD® offered several advantages speedy construction, easy installation over existing structure and low maintenance. Made of high strength light weight ZINCALUME® steel, it was best suited for a roof top extension with limited load bearing capacity. SMARTBUILD® proved itself as the preferred solution to address the requirements both functionally and aesthetically. Since the building was old, an additional floor would have affected its overall stability/ durability/longevity. Due to its tenacity, SMARTBUILD® solution offered great strength and less load on existing RCC roof. The aesthetics of the existing building had to be seamlessly merged with the new proposed LGFS structure. SMARTBUILD®’s precision engineering enabled design flexibility that was compatible with any exterior and interior cladding product available. Here the front fascia made of ACP and glass suitably complemented with the new n and old building structure. A smart technology (LGFS) can be used almost everywhere and with limitless potential for any kind of shape, design and quality over conventional system. SMARTBUILD® solution provided by Tata BlueScope Steel has made our roof top Laboratory building possible which seemed to be impossible with conventional system due to low load bearing capacity of the existing roof slab within shortest possible time and utilizing minimum resources. PEB
INDUSTRY SPEAKS
PEB plays a vital role in the warehousing sector
W Shahid Hussain, CMD, Lohaar Engineering and Constructions Pvt Ltd says PEB is extensively used in the construction of warehouses and opines a single window clearance system for PEB contractors is need of the hour.
Shahid Hussain, CMD, Lohaar Engineering and Constructions Pvt Ltd
hat are some of the core areas in construction and infrastructure where PEB can be preferred? PEB can play a role in modern construction especially areas like warehousing and godowns. Especially with the rise of e-commerce the needs for warehouses and godowns has shot up. Likewise during execution of huge infrastructure projects too it is necessary to have similar facilities. How can PEB for mass accommodation address the infrastructural needs in areas prone to rough weather? While making PEB structures you don’t have to face these problems related to rough weather as it is based on a very strong foundation. The problem arises when construction is taking place in rough weather areas. During construction process, you have to supply concrete, mixture, civil construction materials but in PEB, only erection process of bridges is required, so it can be directly transported to the site without any problems. How do you see the availability of quality steel and accessories in India for building reliable PEB construction? Most companies who produce PEB are ISO certified and follow its rules and regulations. The material used is also top notch and PM 350 material is used. It all depends on the erectability of the structure and what components you are using. We are also evolving with changing times and adapting to new techniques for our latest projects. What are the hurdles which need to be addressed improve per capita steel consumption? I want to convey to our government that it should focus on smaller industries since they too play a major role in revenue generation which ultimately contributes to the growth of Indian economy. The policies of govt need to improve and relaxations have to be given to the MSME sector.

There are many associations such as CII, IBBS, IIA, who have many clients but the main roadblock in implementing the project is the flawed policies and it affects the execution. The government on one hand, talks about there should be no bribery and we support that but also work has to be done and in a time bound manner. How PEB makes structures seismic proof? It is possible but one has to work very closely with the architects and engineers to ensure that all the process and specs desired to make the end structure seismic proof is followed to the tee. Moreover design of the PEB structure too matters. At Lohaar we are always looking for solutions to make PEB structures seismic proof. We have already ventured into the creation of LGFS (Light Guage Steel Framing) buildings to address this issue. How is the warehousing sector scaling up the demand for PEBs? PEB plays a vital role in the warehousing sector. It is one of chief catalyst for the growth. We need more warehouses in India. Likewise in the global markets too there is a lot of opportunity. There is much work to do in the Middle East and countries like Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Kenya, and Ethiopia for sugar plants, but there aren’t many facilities for PEB contractors to get clearances or any single window system for their projects. The government can play a constructive role in ensuring that the Indian PEB players get access to such global projects. n

CONCRETE ADMIXTURE
PROFILE
Admixtures: Adding value to cements
R
einforced cement concrete has come to stay as an indispensable building material for the modern construction industry. Concrete used in various structures has different requirements with respect to functioning as an end product and also functional requirements vary with respect to its placement conditions, ambient temperature, distance it is required to travel before it is finally placed and compacted etc. There are different types of admixtures divided on their functionality and they are as follows: • • • • • • • •
Waterproofing Admixtures Water-reducing Admixtures Air Entraining Admixtures Super Plasticizing Admixtures Set Retarding Admixtures Accelerating Admixtures Corrosion Inhibiting Admixtures Slump Retention Admixtures.
Waterproofing Admixtures When cement concrete was adopted after the lime concrete and lime mortar era, the first problem faced by the construction engineers in comparison to the lime mortar/concrete was the shrinkage cracks and the leakages. Various laboratories studied this behaviour of cement concrete and put forward various solutions to get over this problem of shrinkage cracks and leakages. The suggestions of early stages are as follows:
70
B2B PURCHASE
February 2020
Some advocated the use of lesser water or maintaining water cement ratio at 0.43. While some advocated the use of water repelling compounds in the concrete so that water falling on the concrete got repelled and did not enter the concrete so no leakages. And others advocated the use of air-entraining agents, to entrain three to four per cent air in the concrete so that the capillaries did not progress in the cement matrix. One per cent entrainment of air causes six per cent drop in compressive strength. This was an expensive proposition as it required extra cement for getting the same strength. Water reducing Admixtures As the requirement of higher strength in concrete increased one could go up to a limit, as cement content higher than 525 kgs per cubic meter of concrete produced shrinkage cracks. The need of good workability for better compaction and reduction of water cement ratio for better strength at work sites demanded water reducing admixtures. Based on the chemical composition the water reducing admixtures which are supplied in liquid form can be divided into four categories: • Admixtures based on Ligno Sulphonates • Admixtures based on Sulphonated naphthalene formaldehyde condensate • Admistures based on Sulphonated melamine formaldehyde condensate
•
Admixtures based on Poly Carboxylic ethers
Ligno sulphonates The first admixtures which in concrete for water reduction were based on Lingo suphonates, which is simply referred to as lingo based admixtures. These admixtures are from natural sources and have some reducing sugars associated with them. They have a tendency to entrain 1-2 per cent air in the concrete and cause slight retardation in concrete. Suphonated Naphthalene Formaldehyde Condensate This range of admixtures, are synthetic inorganic ones in the form of dark brown liquids. They have slight accelerating property by nature and detrain air from the concrete. However retarding admixtures can also be made out by incorporating retarding elements. Their performance or water reducing property is proportional to their molecular weight. Their molecular weight ranges from 2000 to 30000 units. Sulphonated Melamine Formaldehyde Condensate This range of admixtures are more or less like naphthalene ones except that they are clear liquids. Such water reducing admixtures are quite useful in paver block and paver tile industry which uses white cement and pigments.
profile
Air entraining Admixtures More often higher compressive strength is not the criteria to ensure long performance life of a concrete structure. Concrete structure which are subjected to alternate drying and wetting spells, often disintegrate and crumble. This is experienced in most water retaining structures dams, canals and marine structures. To increase the resistance of concrete to these alternate drying and wetting conditions one needs to increase its soundness of concrete, which is achieved by entraining air. This is done by incorporating air entraining admixture in wet concrete which forms and evenly spreads micro fine air bubbles of the size of about 20 microns in the body of concrete. Super Plasticizing Admixtures For achieving high strengths in concrete one needs to reduce water cement ratios to a great extent. Normal water reducing admixtures reduce the water cement ratio to an extent of 25 per cent for getting the same workability. Set Retarding Admixtures When the concrete batching plant and the site of concrete pour are at a far off distance one needs concrete set retarding admixture. These admixtures could be based on lignos, naphthalenes, melamine or even PCs. Accelerating Admixtures In cold weather when the ambient temperatures fall below 10
concrete admixture
degree C, concrete does not easily set. In such situations one uses an accelerating admixture. These admixtures are available in powder as well as in liquid forms. Corrosion Inhibiting Admixtures To prevent the corrosion of steel in the RCC structures and to lengthen the life of the structure itself, steel is coated with epoxy in a process known as fusion bonding. This is feasible on large projects. On small projects this practice is impractical. Certain chemicals are known to inhibit corrosion of steel. Slump Retention Admixtures Generally set retarding admixtures only help in maintaining the workability of concrete over long spells of time. Imbalance in the aggregate proportioning due to changing aggregates often creates problems on sites. Sands with too less fines create gap in the grading between the sizes of sands and cement. As a result of this the slurry often comes out and gets evaporated causing loss in workability. Fine aggregates with very high percentage of fines cause non setting of concrete in combination with retarding admixtures. n For more details, contact: M A Waheed, Director – Technical, Perma Construction Aids Pvt Ltd (A wholly owned subsidiary of Kansai Nerolac Paints Limited)

Hemant Chauhan, Senior Manager, Buildcon Consultants Pvt Ltd
What are the market opportunities for your products in India? What are the essential growth drivers? One of our key offering is Concrete Floor Casting Service meant for Warehouses & Large Industries.
Hemant Chauhan, Senior Manager, Buildcon Consultants Pvt Ltd talks about the specialty products offered by his company which caters to flooring, waterproofing and insulation of buildings.
Warehousing is still at an early stage in India. The concept of proper warehouse planning and design has been only now introduced seriously because of requirements by big box retailers& brands like Amazon, Flipkart, IKEA etc. The GST regime has brought in a huge opportunity to have storage at strategic location on a Pan-India basis. Lots of players have jumped into the fray for making warehousing facilities. The importance of correct specification for Industrial Flooring is finally getting the attention that it deserves. A lot of warehouses and industries face problems because the concrete flooring was not designed and executed as per requirements of the operations. This happened because a normal civil contractor making the warehouse would bring in a typical “VDF Contractor” who would use outdated and in-fact a harmful system of making the large concrete floor using “Dewatering Method”. In the presence of Ready Mixed Concrete a Dewatering or a VDF system is wrong concept. These days we have easily available controlled concrete that avoids need of any Dewatering process and this in-turn allows lot of options to improve the quality of the cast floor.
Can you elucidate on your product range and applications? We are a specialty contracting company since 1990 and have three verticals focused on • Flooring • Waterproofing • Insulation of Buildings

dealing in Construction Chemicals and we are able to combine material, experience and art with science to deliver floors that perform as expected. Our Waterproofing Division has undertaken projects ranging from Delhi Metro Underground Station to large oil refineries & other green field projects. In fact with our infrastructure we can execute project anywhere in the world. We have been able to execute some of category first projects using cutting edge systems of the industry. The company is fortunate to have grown Pan-India with a team of dedicated engineers and applicators.
How can admixtures play an effective role in building seismic proof structures? To put it simply, Admixture or Superplasticizers are as basic requirement to concrete as cement itself. As designs of structures are getting more complicated and more demanding on the basic concrete itself, we need high performance concrete, self compacting properties, we need better & higher grades of concrete and all this with reducing human interference to maintain quality control. The importance of Superplasticizer can be judged from the fact that IS Code 456 makes it mandatory to use Admixtures for concrete.
Epoxy SLF or Self Level Flooring systems are now easy to apply and come in per-measured kits that can be just spread as per thickness required to get easy to clean floors. These can be pressure washed with hot water up- to 80C to clean up the floor. Food Industries, Medicine Plants, Textile Units and such facilities need regular cleaning for maintaining standards as per various International Quality certifications.
Taller structures are able to have better seismic designs with thinner members as they are cast with higher quality of concrete & thus contribute to over all safety of the building structures because of more optimized load distribution.
How does epoxy help in creation of sustainable surfaces in living and commercial spaces? Epoxy or Synthetic flooring can easily replace natural stone & tile application on the flooring space even for commercial & large spaces such as schools and auditoriums.
How do you ensure that your epoxy flooring solutions are resistant to heat and chemicals? The epoxy flooring or synthetic flooring is a category that now has upgraded technologies like polyurethane based flooring screeds.
In-fact concepts like Epoxy Terrazzo uses recycled or left over aggregates from the stone processing industry to make very long lasting floors that provide look of natural stones or as per requirement of design.
The normal epoxy flooring has come a long way with having better properties of scratch resistance as compared to past.
Such Epoxy Terrazzo floor last up-to the life time of building and seldom need repairs with regular maintenance. One of the major project using Epoxy Terrazzo flooring system is at the Delhi International Airport where it has been approved due to its long lasting properties.
We have hybrid epoxy systems for high performance chemical resistance and also added abrasion resistance of polyurethanes to withstand rapid movement for heavy traffic floors.
Also some of the cutting edge epoxy polyurethane systems are water based, that avoids use of harmful solvents and are safe of environment as well as for the applicators. A new use of Epoxy Polyurethane flooring system is for making Parking Decks. These days there are large parking spaces that have regular load change as vehicles come and go. When a parking deck is fully loaded it bends a bit and straightens out again when load is removed, this creates unique requirement to protect the concrete slab. Flexible Epoxy PU hybrid system for parking deck is now available that helps to protect slabs and increase the service n life of the facility.

significantly high heat (as high as 1500oC). Titanium Coatings provide a barrier to heat and humidity and extend the lifetime of the epoxy materials. How does epoxy help in creation of sustainable surfaces in living and commercial spaces? Ishita: Sustainability focuses on meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. A key contributor to sustainability of a structure is durability and service life. Epoxy coatings, composites and mortars are an excellent durability and service life enhancing material whose use in RCC and steel structures can significantly increase their life.
How do you ensure that your epoxy solutions are resistant to heat and chemicals? Sourabh: Epoxies are polymer chemicals that cure into hard surfaces which are used to formulate coatings for surfaces or grouts and mortars for structures. Epoxy is lightweight, anti-corrosive and possesses other useful mechanical qualities that make it a valuable material for use in construction, concrete surface repair, structure reinforcement etc. Epoxy resins work well as bonding agents for metals, wood, plastics and other materials. Most importantly, epoxies are employed for their exceptional corrosion resistance and chemical resistance properties, where they demonstrate very good durability when exposed to corrosive chemical and marine environments. While epoxy remain durable at room temperature, degradation of its polymer matrix can occur due to high heat and heat combined with moisture. Many epoxies retain their durable qualities such as fracture toughness from low temperatures, when they are hardest, to room temperatures. The viscoelastic properties of epoxy are observed with increase in temperature. The temperature at which heat distortion if cured epoxy resins occurs ranges between 20 and 90oC. As temperature increases, a significant amount of the flexural and compressive strength of epoxy decreases. When the temperature increases to 60oC epoxy reaches the Heat Distortion Temperature (HDT), and it begins to deform. The temperature increase also leads to loss of load-bearing capacity and stiffness. However, modern material science allows us to overcome these issues by the addition of certain specialized curing agents to withstand high temperatures. Epoxy resins with a rod structure tend to withstand temperature extremes better than those with structures that are flexible. Epoxy resins with bromine atoms exhibit flame-retardant capability. Carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy composites can withstand

Epoxy can be used to produce various types of environmental barrier coatings and layers which basically isolate the structure from agents of environmental aggression like moisture, water, chlorides, sulphates and other aggressive chemicals that attack the structures and cause deterioration. Epoxies also have excellent mechanical and structural properties which can be used to increase the life of older structures in a repair and rehabilitation scenario. All in all, these incredibly diverse materials are proven, well understood and economic solutions to meet the demands of sustainability of buildings and structures in India and Sunanda with its track record of 40 years and cutting edge R&D and innovation is uniquely positioned to provide solutions in the area of material science of epoxies. n

Saravanan Panneer Selvam, General Manager, Grundfos India
ould you tell us about Grundfos journey into the water sector so far? Grundfos was founded in 1945 by Poul Due Jensen and provided company’s first pump Foss 1. From producing 500 pumps in 1947 to 50,000 in 1959, Grundfos has since become one of the world’s leading providers of pump solutions with annual production standing at more than 17 million units. The company now has more than 19,000 employees across its 83 companies in 56 countries. Grundfos entered the Indian market 21 years back and has been able to change the face of the pump industry with its intelligent and pioneering advanced pumping solutions. Over these years, the company has exhibited an average growth of 20 per cent with sustainability at the core of its operations and products. The company has not only grown in terms of its business, market share and presence nationally but has also focused on helping India conserve water and energy through its sustainable solutions and initiatives. What would be the three most important issues in the Indian pump industry in the coming years? a) Inefficient pumps: Pumps account for a massive 10 per cent of the world’s electricity consumption and yet 9 out of 10 pumps in operation today are not optimised. Reducing energy consumption lowers operation cost and conserves water, which in turn helps in savings and causing minimal impact to environment. Replacing inefficient pumps with energy efficient pumps like Grundfos would help to save 4 per cent of the world’s electricity consumption. This would in turn additionally result in saving two billion m3 of freshwater supplies.
February 2020
b) Copying of products: Grundfos is a pioneer in the pumping industry and our products are copied rampantly. Though these pumps look like our products, their quality and efficiencies are nowhere close to ours. c) Global trade situations: The trade war between the US and China is increasing the costs of components. This is impacting the pump industry in larger and us too. How does your company approach sustainability? Grundfos approaches sustainability at three levels. Firstly, by building pioneering and innovative technologies that are highly energy efficient as they help reduce water stress. Secondly, by partnering and strengthening

solutions with its applications across domestic, commercial, industrial, water utilities and many more.
their stakeholder engagement in achieving shared goals. And lastly, by having a sustainability mindset in everything we do. The company contributes towards energy and water conservation by reducing its own impact on the environment. The company’s headquarters in Chennai is the country’s first gold-rated green building (LEED certification by USGBC in 2005) and is energy efficient with 100 per cent recycling of the sewage, rain water harvesting and with solar collectors and photovoltaics. Grundfos India’s factory also received the gold certification in 2011 from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). In August 2013, the Grundfos India office building was elevated to a LEED EB Platinum certification. The company also works towards restoring water bodies and providing access to water to rural communities as part of its CSR initiatives. Could you highlight some of your technologies that help to conserve water and reduce energy usage? Our company develops water solutions for the world and has set standard in terms of innovation, efficiency, reliability and sustainability. We are a pump company connecting with millions and millions of people every day. Our solutions help our partners and customers move water to where it is supposed to go. Providing drinking water for the smallest villages and the highest skyscrapers, treating and removing wastewater and bringing heat and comfort to the world – or cool it down if needed. Grundfos innovative solutions are built on adaptive technologies concept and they are as follows: • iSOLUTIONS: This range of intelligent pump solutions were developed to look beyond individual components and to optimise the entire system. This system helps to control, monitor and optimise water systems even in the most demanding situations across commercial buildings, industry and water utility. • Demand Driven Distribution: This multipump solution enables the distribution of water as per the demand thereby helping to address leakage which is one of the largest sources of water loss. This offers precise amount of water flow based on its demand thereby contributing to significantly towards saving energy, water and operating cost. • Remote Management System: A solution that was designed for smart cities to help monitor pump installations in commercial buildings, water supply networks, wastewater plants, etc. The system enables to track changes in pump performance and energy consumption to automatically generated reports to plan maintenance and reduce downtime. Can Grundfos solutions be deployed in existing infrastructure too? Yes, Grundfos provides retrofitting with modern high efficiency pumps to combat the wastage of energy and water. When considering replacement pumps, generally people fail to realise it is not the initial cost, but the whole of life cost that is important, therefore, to identify which product is the perfect fit for the existing building, Grundfos works closely with the customers and carries out pump audits. The pump audit is a diagnostic tool to identify excessive energy consumption in any kind of pumping system. Our experience with pump audits shows that 30-50 per cent of the energy consumed by pumps could be saved which translates into significant potential savings for installations, and a little extra relief for the environment. How much of Grundfos focus is on research and development? Innovation has been key to Grundfos pioneering technologies. The company therefore invests five per cent of its profits in R&D. n
