ensure a long life for the equipment. Heavy usage of the equipment calls for more lubrication and maintenance. Let’s look at some tips that can be followed to help earthmoving equipment to have a more fulfilling life, allowing them to be utilised to its optimum level.

Keeping the equipment clean Cleanliness is an important aspect of our lives and this goes for earthmoving equipment as well. Earthmoving equipment comes with filters that are fitted at areas of the equipment that are sensitive to dirt and dust. These filters must be cleaned from time to time. At times, filters can get clogged with dirt, therefore they must be replaced from time to time otherwise, and it can lead

to problems for the machinery. The equipment must be kept in a place that is safe and protective.

Lubricatiing the machinery Lubrication plays a significant part in the maintenance of the equipment. When it comes to Indian terrain or Indian sites, lubrication is a must given the dry weather certain sites. External environment plays an essential role as factors like climate; heat and pollution become determining factors. Lubrication of the equipment helps to reduce friction and also reduces the wear and tear of the machine. Lubrication ensures that the equipment lives up to complete its life cycle even it is used to its optimum capacity. When components are well lubricated and

PROCUREMENT GUIDELINES fuelled with the best oils, they make sure that these components function and operate without unprecedented problems. Lack of lubrication makes it difficult as there is an increase of friction between the components, resulting in reduced productivity. Lubrication should be done by those experienced enough to understand the functioning of the components. Lubricants used in the equipment must be appropriate and suited to the components of the equipment.

Regularly maintaining the equipment Inspection and maintenance of earthmoving equipment is to make sure that they can be used at any point of time. This calls for scheduling a time table for regular inspection

and maintenance of earth moving equipment. Expert engineers and technicians must regularly take care of the individual components of the machine. The motors, gears, automotive parts, gaskets, pulleys, lights etc must be taken care of. Also, all the bolts of the equipment must be well fitted and tight. Regular maintenance ensures a long life.

Repair equipment at the right time It is necessary that the equipment is repaired at the right time. Maintenance from time to time ensures that the equipment have a long life. In an unprecedented event that the equipment gets spoiled, the equipment must be repaired at the right time. If the equipment is repaired at the right time it only ensures that

Earthmoving Equipment the equipment is not left unattended. Once, all technical faults are taken care of, the machine becomes immediately functional and enabled to start doing work.

Well-trained operators and workers Skilled workers and employees ensure that the machines are operated without any problems. The employees must be updated with the latest technologies, skills and regulations. If operators or employees are unskilled and not competent enough to operate the equipment the resulting operation could also lead to consequential damage of the equipment or the site. It could also lead to injuries to both the operator and the people present at the site and this entirely dependent on the human resource. n

Roofing

PROCUREMENT GUIDELINES

Efficient roofing for warehouse: a quintessential necessity

Regina Tea Factory, Assam

Roofing in warehouses is significant as they play their part in keeping the goods safe

I

n a world of fast trade, warehouses play a very important role. They are essentially the store houses for storing finished goods. However, warehouses for storing industrial goods can be different from the warehouses used for storing consumer durables or perishable goods. Warehouses for raw materials require an extra layer of care. Also, they will have to treat materials differently. Thanks to the intervention of experts, warehouses today are far more developed than they were a decade ago.

Goods are stored in a warehouse and therefore roofing plays a quintessential role in the entire process. The material of the roof is an important factor and it does not go without saying that roofing can have a bearing on the materials stored in a warehouse. The roof of a warehouse acts like a ceiling, protecting the goods in the warehouse from changing climatic conditions and external conditions. A warehouse is sensitive to factors like temperature, chemicals, lighting or darkness.

The warehousing sector has opened up opportunities for several sectors and one of those sectors is roofing. Roof plays a significant role in a warehouse.

Roofing for warehouses has characteristics different from those of roofing for housing. Warehouses unlike housing become important from the

perspective of trade. Unlike roofing for houses, which is more about safety and sustainability, warehouses are points for storing goods. As these goods vary according to their characteristics, roofing plays an important role in keeping up with the nature of the goods. While some of the goods have a short shelf life, others have a longer life. The conditions in a warehouse play an important role in preserving the goods stored there.

Role of roofing in weather and material-sensitive warehouses Roofing is very important when it comes to weather. Traditional roofing in warehousing are not resistant to 30

all weather and may require being maintenance and repair work. New roofing solutions in the market address this problem. Warehouses for chemicals may react sensitively to chemical reactions that may happen unexpected and unprecedented. Thanks to modern and efficient roofing technologies, these issues are being addressed. Ronak Shah, Marketing Director, Sunarch Industries, shares some interesting points on the roofing solutions that can be of great use. Mr.Shah says, “Colour coated metal roofing sheets and cement roofing sheet do not address the issue of heat insulation, weather corrosion, chemical corrosion which is why Sunarch Industries has introduced uPVC roofing sheets. The Sunarch three-layer roofing sheet has some unique features and benefits. It provides heat insulation. The K value of Sunarch uPVC roofing sheets is 0.1022 W/mK. This prevents sun heat transmission by 40 per cent which is 95 per cent in the case of metal roofing sheets. This makes it an ideal roofing product for pharmaceutical and food processing industry thereby being helpful during their production and storage. The best feature of the uPVC roofing sheet is that there is no weather corrosion. uPVC material has excellent weather corrosion resisting properties.

30

B2B Purchase

May 2015

Speaking of the corrosion of roofs caused by chemicals stored in a warehouse, Mr. Shah says, “A bad part about the metal roofing sheets is that they are subjected to weather corrosion and corrosion arising out of chemical fumes. Sunarch uPVC roofing sheet has excellent resistance properties against chemical fumes like HCL or NAOH. Since metal sheet roofs are subject to corrosion caused by chemical fumes it makes uPVC roofing sheets a better option when it comes to roofing of warehouses.”

ASA based roofing for commercial and industrial places Dion Incorporation manufactures ASA(Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate) based roofs which have wide applications. They can be used in a wide spectrum of activities. ASA material has great toughness and rigidity, good chemical resistance and thermal stability, outstanding resistance to weather, aging and yellowing, and high gloss. ASA uPVC sheet is an optimum choice for roofing and cladding in civil and industrial constructions as per the efficiency and benefits it provides. It can be used in many applications both exterior and interiors like industrial places, commercial places, residential places and agricultural firms. It is very suitable for commercial usage as well as for warehouses. Daylighting system in warehouses Lighting plays an important role in warehouses. Since warehouses need to be secure and accessible around the clock, lighting becomes a quintessential element. Lighting systems help in monitoring the warehouses and keep them bright. Some products might have a functional requirement for lighting while at other times safety measures like CCTV cameras may require lighting for monitoring the warehouses. Sekhar Nori, Managing Director, Skyshade, says, “Logistics and

Shahi Exports, Bengaluru

warehousing have unique functional requirements when it comes to roofmounted lighting. The lighting should be round the clock, throughout the year. Speaking of the timeline for lighting, they should be throughout the day for all around the year. Lighting integrity is not high but reasonably bright because logistics panel are located away from cities. They are subjected to unreliable power supply which affects building lighting. Using integrated smart daylighting system mounted on the building roofs can service the complete lighting requirement of a building 24/7.” Mr Nori also elaborates four systems which can be very helpful for lighting in warehousing, viz. daylighting system, LED lighting, solar power system and smart control system. Speaking in detail of the systems that can be used, Mr Nori says, “In the daylighting system, the sunlight collector is mounted on roof and it collects sunlight from all directions and directs it down through light well attached. This gives uniform, glare force light for 9-10 hours a day. In a LED lighting system used specifically for dark hours, the built in the system has a low wattage LED electronic lighting for non sunshine hours. Whenever sufficient daylight is not available, electric lighting is switched on proportionally to compensate the loss of daylight. The LED lighting is controlled by daylight sensor and lighting controller built into system. In a solar power system during non shine hours, the LED lighting is powered by optional solar power generator installed over the roof. In the smart control panel, the system is equipped with control panel which has features like measurement of energy consumption, manual override and fault detection system among others.” n Image courtesy: Skyshade

Precast Concrete

PROCUREMENT GUIDELINES

Why choose precast concrete? Precast concrete products offer many benefits. They are strong, durable, efficient, time saving, cost efficient, eco-friendly and easy to install. This article elaborates the reasons for choosing precast concrete

P

recast concrete is not a new technology; it has been in use since ancient civilisations like Rome and Greece. Even in India, methodology analogous to precast technology can be seen in old temples and heritage sites. Precast technology has been used in the construction business in India in the past 50 years. In the last few years of the construction boom it has been adopted more than ever, making it a very accepted product coming out of the use of effective technologies. Precast concrete has several advantages to it and a few disadvantages, but some of its advantages outweigh its disadvantages. It has been a boon to the construction business, steadily helping in its growth. Niraj Bhatia, Deputy Manager, Procurement,

General Luxora

Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd, talks about the factors that go into deciding the use of precast concrete. He says, “All projects typically begin with an analysis of various functional layouts and a comparison of structural systems. Well analysed projects generally tend to be divided in both precast and cast-inplace concrete. Several factors go in the decision making process of using precast concrete. These factors include owner’s preferences, construction schedule, ability to utilise local labour, availability of competitive contractors, maintenance considerations, and requirement of structural components.”

Precast concrete: instrumental in real estate boom Ajit Bhate, Managing Director, Precast India Infrastructures Pvt. Ltd gives an historical perspective on the precast concrete technology. He says, “It is not

Precast concrete is mouldable and factory production allows a vast variety of colour choices and finishes allow to have unlimited possibilities to develop the natural beauty of surroundings.

Ram P. Joukani, Director, Lanvin Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd.

PROCUREMENT GUIDELINES a ‘New technology’ per se, though it is new in India. A simple example can be the redevelopment of Europe after it was razed to ground level after the World War II, or the sudden real estate boom in Dubai between 2001 and 2009 could not have been possible if it was not for precast technology. Its durability is already proven all over the world, over the years. In India, we are fortunate to get a technology that is proven durable, efficient, and fine-tuned for ready adoption.” He continues, “Precast technology can be a boon for the builders as all cast-in-situ, laborious methods can be replaced replaced by precast technology, which can be used to design all kinds of shape and structures needed for construction.”

Critical issues involved in the use of precast concrete Satya Narayan Sahu, Regional Sales Manager, North and West India, Halfen Moment India Pvt. Ltd. discusses some very critical points on the use of precast

concrete. Speaking on the handling of precast concrete, Mr. Sahu says, “Handling the precast concrete is one challenge that needs to be addressed. The heavy precast concrete elements need expert handling at precast plant, during transportation to construction site and at the time of erection of these elements. These systems required for the handling are supplied in combination of three basic components. These components like lifting anchor, lifting clutch, recess former are used to lift the precast concrete.” Halfen Moment India provides a range of customised lifting systems based on size, shape and weight of precast element and handling requirements. Another very critical issue which Mr Sahu discusses is the connections between precast elements. He says, “The connections are a critical part of any precast construction considering structural stability as well as its durability. Precast concrete uses connection

systems like wire loop boxes, precast column shoes, precast façade panel anchors, reinforcement bar couplers, reinforcement continuity systems, castin channels with T-bolts etc. to ensure connection between elements.” Halfen India also provides these connection systems.

Precast Concrete

PROCUREMENT GUIDELINES

Precast concrete is fast and with well planned initiatives, the project can achieve just-intime delivery.

Niraj Bhatia, Deputy General Manager, Procurement, Luxora Infrastructure Pvt.

Advantages precast concrete Speaking on the advantages of precast concrete Mr Bhate says, “In precast technology, concrete is cast-in a reusable mould or form, which is then cured in a controlled environment, transported to the construction site and lifted and installed into place. In contrast, conventionally concrete is poured into site-specific forms and cured on site. By producing precast concrete in a controlled environment referred to as a precast plant, the precast concrete is properly cured. Utilising a precast concrete system offers many potential advantages over site casting of concrete. The production process for precast concrete is performed on ground level which helps with safety throughout a project. There is a greater control of the quality of materials and workmanship in a precast plant rather than on a construction site.” Mahatma Mandir Project, Ahmedabad Courtesy: Halfen Moment India Pvt. Ltd.

Speaking on the optimum utilisation of resources at a site, Mr. Sahu says, “Precast construction minimises the wastage of ingredients to a large extent. Better quality of elements lead to higher durability. Precast concrete can provide coloured panels with excellent architectural finishes. Plastering work is eliminated and direct painting can be done ensuring saving of both cost and time.” Highlighting the process involved in assembling precast concrete, Mr Bhatia says, “When compared to cast-in-place concrete, precast does have a lot of advantages. Precast concrete is fast and with well planned initiatives, the project can achieve just-in-time delivery. Precast can be installed immediately as there is no waiting for it to gain strength and the modularity of precast products makes installation faster. Accelerated curing, by heating the precast parts, greatly increases strength gain, reducing the time between casting the part and putting it into service.” Precast concrete products comprising structural options such as concrete solid or hollow blocks, fly ash bricks and outdoor flooring options such as high strength pavers and designer landscaping pavers create structures and landscapes that are very durable, high on load bearing strength, energy efficient, fire-resistant but yet quite economical and extremely low on maintenance. In addition, precast concrete products allow greater architectural freedom and versatility than most other options. Hereunder, Ram P. Joukani, Director, Lanvin Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd. explains why precast concrete products are preferred choice across the world:

State-of-the-art technology The technology used in manufacturing of precast concrete products has evolved greatly over the years and it is now possible to see completely automated plants like ours where the entire manufacturing process from batching and weighing of aggregates to heavy-duty compaction, curing and

even handling of precast products is fully automated and does not require involvement of manual labour. This eliminates chances of manual errors or deviations in quality and gives far more uniformity in products.

Fast and affordable Time is money and this alone today is the most important reason to opt for precast concrete products. Projects can be completed considerably faster as precast structural/flooring products are already cured and ready to use. The economies of scale unlocked by large capacity automated plants also make precast products very affordable keeping in mind huge improvement in product quality and consistency offered by us. Preplanning requirements and using just-in-time supply schedules will also lead to enhanced saving of time and money for developers. Cleaner and greener Precast concrete products require significantly less heat and energy to manufacture and do not contribute to air pollution or global warming. They also contain a high percentage of recycled material and are the most preferred choice for environmentally conscious architects and eco-friendly construction companies. Buildings made of precast concrete products can be almost completely recycled. Besides, usage of these products reduces mess on the construction site and allows cleaner air and water in areas in and around the construction site. Versatility Precast concrete is mouldable and factory production allows a vast variety of colour choices and finishes allow to have unlimited possibilities to develop the natural beauty of surroundings. Precast concrete has potential to provide top quality products for every need, be it for residential projects such as townships, residential or villa complexes, and landscaping areas or commercial purposes such as office buildings, malls, parking lots and even industrial project requirements such as ports, warehouses, public parks, high traffic roads and airport hangars.

PROCUREMENT GUIDELINES team of professionals allow us follow strict quality control procedures and run our manufacturing facility with seamless efficiency. The automated systems help us maintain highest standards of quality and technical excellence by continuously monitoring and strictly following quality checks and procedures. All precast concrete products are made on high quality hardened steel moulds which give exceptional dimensional accuracy as well,” avers Mr Joukani.

The production process for precast concrete is performed on ground level which helps with safety throughout a project.

Ajit Bhate, Managing Director, Precast India Infrastructures Pvt. Ltd

Superior quality and better technical control “We at Lanvin Infrastructure Pvt Ltd, take pride in manufacturing precast concrete products of exceptional quality and consistency on our completely imported plant from Germany. Having a well-experienced

A few disadvantages Speaking on careful handling necessary in the logistics and handling of the precast concrete, Mr Sahu says, “In case of precast concrete the joints may cause leakages if they are not handled properly. The joint filling materials are required wherever required. Logistics of the precast material needs to be well handled or else precast elements may get damaged during transportation and erection at the site.”

Precast Concrete

Extended economic benefits Apart from speed, a very high quality is delivered which is a prime feature of the technology. The finishes received from precast concrete are far superior to on-site concreting. Explaining the economic benefits of precast concrete, Mr Bhate says, “It’s a myth that precast concrete technology can only be used for high-cost projects, as the ROI on implementing precast technology for construction projects is much higher as they are completed in much faster time. This enables builders to start their operations like renting, leasing, handing over at much earlier times, thus starting their revenue cycles earlier. The cost to benefit ratio is less than one, which means that there is more benefit for the amount of cost incurred.” Whereas Mr Bhatia adds, “There is a potential for lower construction cost, especially if standard sizes and repetition of structural and architectural components are used. Also, the labour required is less and the required labour can be less skilled.” n

Concrete

Technology

Making condition survey of concrete The article highlights evaluation of half-cell potentials and rebar corrosion rates in condition surveys of concrete To evaluate corrosion potentials of uncoated reinforcing steel in concrete, ASTM C876 describes the complete test method and easy technique. This test method is suitable for in-service evaluation and for use in research and development work.

C

orrosion of reinforcing steel especially rebar and other embedded metals is the leading cause of deterioration in concrete. When steel corrodes, the resulting rust occupies a greater volume than the steel. This expansion creates tensile stresses in the concrete, which can eventually cause cracking, delamination, and spalling. Commonly corrosion in rebar occurs due to an electrolyte and a metallic connection. In reinforced concrete, the rebar may have many separate areas at different energy levels. Concrete acts as the electrolyte, and the metallic connection is provided by wire ties, chair supports, or the rebar itself. Corrosion is an electrochemical process involving the flow of charges (electrons and ions). At active sites on the bar, called anodes, iron atoms lose electrons and move into the surrounding concrete as ferrous ions. This process is called a half-cell oxidation reaction, or the anodic reaction. Rebar corrosion occurs when chloride ions migrate to concrete material like steel bars. It is a type of corrosion that occurs in most sea links, flyovers, and highway bridges. These structures are usually constructed with rebar that is reinforced by steel throughout the support structures. DV-05 Rebar Corrosion Voltmeter Kit has been designed in line with ASTM C876 specification. Image 1

This test method is applicable to members regardless of their size or the depth of concrete cover over the reinforcing steel. Concrete cover in excess of 3 inches (75 mm) can result in an averaging of adjacent reinforcement corrosion potentials that can result in a loss of the ability to discriminate variation in relative corrosion activity. This test method can be used at any time during the life of a concrete member. The results obtained by the use of this test method shall not be considered as a means for estimating the structural properties of the steel or of the reinforced concrete member. Rebar corrosion voltmeter kit shown below is very simple to use. The complete kit consists of half-cell reference electrode, half-cell voltmeter, damping sponge, and cable reel in a carrying case. The potential measurements should be interpreted by engineers or technical specialists experienced in the fields of concrete materials and corrosion testing. It is often necessary to use other data such as chloride contents, depth of carbonation, delamination survey findings, rate of corrosion results, and environmental exposure conditions, in addition to corrosion potential measurements, to formulate conclusions concerning corrosion activity of embedded steel and its probable effect on the service life of a structure. This test method covers the estimation of the electrical corrosion potential of uncoated reinforcing steel in field and laboratory concrete, for the purpose of determining the corrosion activity of the reinforcing steel. This test method is limited by electrical circuitry. Concrete surface in building interiors and desert environments lose sufficient moisture so that the concrete resistivity becomes so high that special testing techniques not covered in this test method may be required. Concrete surfaces that are coated or treated with sealers may not provide an acceptable electrical circuit. The basic configuration of the electrical circuit is shown as above. The reference half-cell is copper in a copper sulphate solution. By taking half-cell potential measurements a

fixed distance apart a grid of half-cell potentials can be quickly made and thus areas delineated with a high probability of corrosion of the reinforcing steel. To analyse the results, the measurements made with half-cell voltmeter can be plotted on a grid and lines of equipotential contours drawn, highlighting areas of possible corrosion activity. For example the following guide is listed in ASTM C876 (half cell potentials of uncoated reinforcing steel in concrete) using a copper/copper sulphate half cell: • For potentials of 350 mV and greater there is a 95 per cent chance of active steel corrosion • For potentials 200 to 350 mV there is a 50 per cent chance of active steel corrosion • For potentials less than 200 mV there is only 5 per cent chance of active steel corrosion. Test results can be reproduced as shown in Image 2. Half Cell Survey H2 - Level 3 Column A8

Conclusion Evaluation of uncoated rebar and structures with half-cell potential survey using half-cell voltmeter is important. It is used to locate and reasonably quantify areas of active rebar corrosion and corrosion-induced damage in concrete and plotting the recorded half-cell potentials in contour maps. It is highly useful technique for inspections and maintenance management by field measurement of corrosion potentials of uncoated reinforcing steel in concrete. n Contact:

Formwork

Case Study

Reinforced concrete protection wall using PASCHAL formwork In EL KALA, in the EL TAREF Province of Algeria, a reinforced concrete protection wall has been built, extending up to a height of 8 metres, to protect the 651-metre-long promenade

At a length of 651 metres, the protective wall structure was built with transverse reinforcements up to the height of the first concrete section, i.e. 4 metres. The entire reinforced concrete structure was built using the Modular or GE formwork system. The seaward side was however completed in what was visibly a concrete surface.

T

he total construction costs were given as â‚Ź 3.5 million. Eurl ETUHP MENANI ALGERIE, the construction company that carried out this work, used its own formwork system, the PASCHAL Modular or GE universal formwork. For this project, 400 sq. metres of Modular formwork was used, primarily in panel heights of 100 and 125 cm. Parallel to construction of this protective reinforced concrete wall, the promenade was restored, together with the pipework laid below it.

Foundations that run deep, instead of being built on sand The foundations of part of this reinforced concrete protective wall take the form of 430 drilled piles with diameters of 60 and 80 cm and a depth of up to 12 metres. A concrete foundation was then poured over the heads of these drilled piles to a width of up to 4 metres and a thickness of up to 0.80 metres. Universal Modular or GE formwork was also used on the strip foundations. The entire strip foundation was built in 54 sections, each 12 metres in length.

Between March and December 2014, a 651-metre-long concrete protection wall was constructed in EL KALA in the EL TAREF Province of Algeria, involving the use of 400 sq.m. of Modular or GE formwork. In the adjoining area to the existing concrete structure, Modular or GE panels measuring 100 x 150 cm were combined with 100 x 125 cm panels as the formwork for the protective wall.

Two construction variants The construction of this protection wall is divided into one wall section measuring 651 metres in length, built with a wall thickness of 0.40 to 0.60 cm and to different heights, ranging from 2.60 metres to 8 metres, without additional cross bracing. 168 metres of this protective wall construction was clad on the seaward side with reinforcing wall panels arranged transversely at a distance of 4 metres. The concrete constructions attaining a wall height of 8 metres were each built in two concreting cycles, each to a height of 4 metres. The transverse reinforcement, with a thickness of 0.70 metres, ends at any one time at a height of 4 metres. Also the inclined reinforcement sections were formed using universal Modular or GE formwork. Across the entire length of this construction, the seaward side was left as a visibly concrete structure.

In the first section, the concrete wall, measuring 40 to 60 cm in thickness, was concreted to a height of 4 metres. In the second cycle, the wall was completed to a height of 8 metres.

The Modular or GE designed for manual handling and universal formwork also delivered conviction at this construction project in Algeria, by virtue of its versatility and adaptability, using as formwork for the foundations as well as the wall structures, which in turn documents that concrete structures can be built perfectly at low cost and within a short period of time. n For more details, visit www.paschal.de

Lafarge, Solidia to commercialise low carbon concrete binder

L

afarge has signed an agreement with US start-up Solidia Technologies to sell its low-carbon cement and CO2cured pre-cast concrete worldwide. Under the terms of this agreement, Lafarge will have the right to commercialise the process that allows lower CO2 emissions in the cement production process and utilises CO2 in precast concrete manufacturing. The patented technology expected to reduce the carbon footprint of the end-to-end process by up to 70 per cent. The commercial launch will initially take place in some key markets in North America and in Europe for the manufacturing of concrete elements such as paving stones, roof tiles and concrete blocks. Solidia has developed a new binder made from similar raw materials to Ordinary Portland Cement and produced in a traditional rotary kiln. It is produced at lower temperatures and through a different chemical reaction that generates less CO2.

Used afterwards in the manufacture of precast concrete, Solidia Cement hardens through the addition and absorption of CO2 (carbonation), in a patented curing process that reduces the overall carbon footprint by up to 70 per cent. “Produced at traditional precast concrete manufacturing facilities, Solidia Concrete is higher performing and reaches full strength in less than 24 hours, compared to 28 days for precast concrete made using ordinary portland cement. This offers considerable energy savings and cost reductions to precast concrete manufacturers,” Lafarge claims. Lafarge has worked with Solidia Technologies since 2013 to industrialise this technology. In April 2014, a joint group of Lafarge and Solidia scientists confirmed the reduced carbon footprint and commercial viability of Solidia cement during a full-scale trial at Lafarge’s Whitehall cement plant in the US. The cement produced has subsequently been used by a variety of pre-cast customers in North America and Europe to further validate Solidia’s

curing technology and to produce blocks, pavers and roof tiles for commercial testing. In December 2014, Lafarge invested in Solidia Technologies and joined Solidia’s Board of Directors.

A successful partnership Lafarge has collaborated with Solidia Technologies since 2013 to industrialise this technology. Lafarge researchers and technical experts worked with Solidia to demonstrate the feasibility of commercial-scale production in a conventional cement plant. In April 2014, a joint group of Lafarge and Solidia scientists validated the reduced carbon footprint and commercial viability of Solidia cement during a full-scale trial at Lafarge’s Whitehall cement plant in the US. Waterproofing techniques that address problems effectivley Modern technique aims to understand the functional behaviour of the structure, understand the properties of the available materials arrive at a system, which is best suited for the structure and incorporate the system at the design stage only

W

aterproofing of building to prevent the ingress of water is an activity, which, perhaps is practiced in one form or the other, ever since the first building was built on earth. The methodology has been changing with the changes in the architectural designs and with the availability different building materials in construction. Over the years, the concept of waterproofing has also changed. Now in present day construction where ordinary portland cement and its blends with puzzolonic and slag materials has come to stay, there are a lot of compatible alternatives available for a builder to choose from various waterproofing systems. Some systems are old and conventional but are

64

being practiced successfully while the modern systems are designed to take the material and structural behaviour into consideration. Some of the old waterproofing systems which are in use are lime terracing, bituminous treatment, metallic sheet wrapping, polyurethane based treatment, epoxy based treatment and box type system of waterproofing.

Modern techniques in waterproofing Modern technique aims to understand the functional behaviour of the structure, understand the properties of the available materials arrive at a system, which is best suited for the

structure and incorporate the system at the design stage only. A single product or technique is not usually enough, involvement of various bodies and techniques in coordination is essential for making structures waterproof. For success of any system the building structure should have sufficient and efficient control joints if the slabs dimensions are more than twenty meter in any direction. Control joints are structural engineering design features. These joints are supposed to be designed and their configurations must be marked in the drawings for the waterproofing system to be proposed in large buildings. If proper control joints are not provided 66

in large slabs, no waterproofing system works. Modern technique relies basically on two main fool proof and simple waterproofing systems, which are as follows: • Crystalline waterproofing system • Flexible membrane water proofing system.

Crystalline waterproofing system This system involves blocking the water bearing capillaries with insoluble crystals. This method is used for waterproofing water-retaining structures like overhead/underground water tanks, sunk slabs of bathrooms and toilets, swimming pools, basements, terrace gardens etc. The main product in this system is a grey or brown looking powder. The method of treatment involves saturating with water the surface to be treated. Then mixing two and half volume of the powder with one volume of water to form neat consistency hot slurry. This slurry is brush applied on the saturated surface. The active ingredients in the slurry pass through the water bearing capillaries and react with calcium oxide in the concrete to form insoluble crystals, which effectively block the capillaries. Further the chemical ingredients of the product remain in concrete to reactivate the process of crystallisation as and when a new capillary is developed. This system of water proofing the water retaining structures is practiced in all the developed countries.

Flexible membrane waterproofing system The main product used in this system comprises of two components, one liquid and the other is a powder packed roughly in the proportion of 1:4 by weight. The liquid component is an acrylic emulsion and the powder component is a polymer-modified cement with film forming chemicals and fillers, and some manufacturers add reinforcing fibres to make the product extra effective. When these two ingredients namely the preweighed powder and the liquid are mixed together an uniform slurry

66

B2B Purchase

May 2015

results. This slurry is brush applied on the roof surface, which upon drying forms a flexible film. Since there is cement in this product its compatibility with concrete is excellent. The film further allows the breathing of the concrete without any hindrance hence there is no problems of its de-lamination from the concrete surface. This film being flexible takes care of the deflections in the slab and the movements caused because of primary or secondary settlements, movements due to wind loads and temperature stresses developed in the concrete. This system can be used on surfaces, which had bituminous treatment earlier.

The failure of waterproofing systems Especially in large buildings waterproofing systems fail if the control joints are not in position or not properly executed. This failure occurs after one complete year when the structure has passed through one complete summer and the winter cycle. One can’t repair such failures. It needs a different type of approach involving provision of crack inducer joints and then tackling the waterproofing in movement restricted bays. Application of a waterproofing product in non-specified areas, such as, using a crystalline waterproofing system in waterproofing the terrace or using a flexible membrane system in the water tank results in failures even though the products themselves may be genuine. Stretching the coverage of the products beyond the specified limits by the manufacturer results in inefficiency of the product and hence a failure.

Lack of ambiguity between clients and architects Generally, architects in India, do not specify in depth waterproofing details and leave this aspect generally to ignorant client to chose whatever system he likes, and many structural

designers give least importance to the control joints. As a result of this many systems have failed in several prestigious buildings and the blame went to waterproofing contractors or the product manufacturer. There is a need for the architects and the structural designers to understand the various systems available and specify them clearly and in sufficient detail, taking into consideration the in-service conditions of the structure. The client should also insist on the architect to provide waterproofing design details in advance so that no ambiguity remains till the end. This would give enough time in selecting the specified material.

Bargain with contractors only if required Selection of an effective waterproofing system for a structure taking all the performance criteria of the structure into account and also taking into the consideration the performance of the materials in the system is of prime importance for any success of the waterproofing job. Waterproofing jobs awarded to waterproofing contractors purely on economical price considerations often fail. It is always advisable to involve the architect or the structural engineer in selection of a system, and requisite performance guarantees should be taken from the contractors. It is better to avoid bargaining for the job value out of contractor’s margins. This could result in stretching the product beyond the coverage specified by the manufacturer or substitution of cheaper material in the system to cover the cost. Always supervise the job and the incoming materials for the intact tamperproof seals and quantities. Use the services of an engineer or architect in selection of materials. n Authored by -

easonal buzz in summer is all about waterproofing! Everybody talks about it. Construction chemical companies call themselves an expert in waterproofing. The big brands in India enter the race and suddenly change their positioning for the season to become a waterproofing company. The consumers are given solutions and assurance. Most of them badly need it and are continuously looking out for products which will fix their problems. Unfortunately many such applications fail before the next monsoon. This gives opportunity to sell more expensive products. The cycle continues and business booms, giving the consumer tremendous satisfaction every year, which ultimately converts to unhappiness at the end of the season. In this article, we shall discuss about some of the myths and facts about waterproofing.

Myth 1: Putty needs to be used for waterproofing Fact: Putty has limited protection against waterproofing because it is only a film between the plaster and the paint. If the wall has leakage which is coming from a source which is not fixed, then the effects of waterproofing will reappear even after applying putty. Water gets accumulated and finally breaks open the putty as well as the layer of paint causing a very shabby looking wall. Myth 2: Water leakages are always from the upper floor Fact: Not necessarily. Because water also flows by capillary effect in which leakage from the same floor or sometimes lower floors can penetrate through micro cracks and create paint peeling. This needs to be checked before taking decision on making repairs in the bathroom.

PROCUREMENT GUIDELINES Myth 3: Leakage happens only through terrace Fact: Though it is observed that the leakages happen through terraces, it has also been noted that the leakage continued after the terrace treatment was done and the majority was happening through the side walls. Therefore only repairing the terrace would not be enough to stop water leakages. Myth 4: Paint peeling happens only because of leakages Fact: Paint peels can also peel-off if the putty or primer applied earlier was weak in its adhesion. Good quality putty ensures that the adhesion is strong enough to hold itself with the plastered wall. This creates a base for the paint and prevents peeling. Myth 5: Use of crushed sand in plastering leads to cracks and leakages Fact: In plastering if the ratios are incorrect, application is not done

properly and curing is less, cracks have been observed even where natural sand was used. Cubical crushed sand produced by a good quality vertical shaft impactor, along with air agents deliver superior results in plastering.

Myth 6: Use of waterproofing additives will ensure no cracks Fact: Additives certainly help but are not full proof because it also depends on the correct gradation of sand, cement ratio, application, curing, unskilled labour etc. Checking the technical capability of the contractor is very important. Myth 7: Bathroom tiles need to be removed to stop leakages Fact: With the latest products like tile adhesive, removal of earlier tiles is not required at all. The tile adhesive can be applied and tile can stick on tile. A thin layer of 3 mm is enough to stick the new tile on top and save the time, labour and side effects of breaking old tiles.

Waterproofing

Myth 8: Humid or coastal areas need more waterproofing Fact: Not true because humidity or salt contain in the atmosphere cannot cause leakages or peel paints. It can though create corrosion of metals and fittings but does not need more or special waterproofing. Myth 9: Using fibre in plastering stops leakages Fact: Use of fibres in plastering certainly improves its performance and reduces cracks to a large extend but does not totally eliminate waterproofing because the effects of bathroom leakages can still cause water leakage and harm the walls. Myth 10: Waterproofing leads to breakage or puffing of flooring Fact: It is mostly the incorrect application of tiles or improper preparation of the base which can lead to uprooting, breakage or puffing of floor tiles. Using tile adhesive can minimise such problems. n

T

he concrete industry nowadays faces new challenge on manufacturing concrete with more stringent technical requirements and as the urbanisation increases, the usage of concrete rises. But apart from challenge from manufacturing it also faces huge challenges in construction especially due to vertical growth in cities with mushrooming of high-rise buildings. Dr. Prakash Nanthagopalan, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering – IIT Bombay stated that there are three challenges mainly faced while pumping to high-rise projects such as blockage of concrete, wear and tear of pipes and lastly the quality of concrete coming out is not appropriate because of pumping pressures, variable pressures etc. Therefore lots of difficulties are encountered. “To overcome such difficulties there should be proper understanding of concrete. A high-rise building is a big project therefore there should be fundamental understanding of what type of concrete, quality of concrete, and then whether it will be pumpable or not,” suggested Dr. Prakash Nanthagopalan, Vice President, Building Materials, Reliance Industries while speaking on the sidelines the seminar on ‘Modern Construction Chemicals and Systems for Construction Industry’ organised by IIT Bombay and Chryso India in Mumbai recently. The second seminar was held at IIT Delhi. n

C-Einpresshilfe EH is an admixture in powder form for grouting ducts in post tensioned or pre-stressed concrete structures using cementitious grout. It ensures permanent contact and an excellent bond with the grouted surfaces.

Before admixing MC-Einpresshilfe EH the cement grout powder component should be thoroughly mixed with water for about 2 to 3 minutes. After that MCEinpresshilfe EH should be added to the mix at a ratio of 0.5 to 1 per cent by cement weight. The whole mixing to ensure complete dispersion, should last at least 4 minutes. Due to high dispersion of MCEinpresshilfe EH it is possible to reduce the w/c ratio in order to get a denser mix. A

preliminary test is necessary to determine optimum dosage. The grouting operation can be carried out easily and effectively into very narrow cross-section without increasing the water content of the mix. MC-Bauchemie (India) Pvt. Danfoss unveils new options for Reverse Displacement Motor D

anfoss has introduced new, valuable options for its innovative Reverse Displacement Motor (RDM). The expanded RDM option portfolio increases both functionality and customer value.

The open circuit piston motor offers reverse circuit functionality without external valves — an unprecedented hydraulic system solution for mobile equipment applications. With wider product options, the RDM can be designed to meet individual needs of customers, increasing function and value. “The RDM enables customers to achieve up to 10 per cent power savings, a 15 per cent average reduction in total system cost, and reduced system complexity,” Danfoss claims. New RDM options provide customers with more functionality through control options and increased displacement. The compact motor now features the following added options: 38 cc, 45 cc, speed sensor and 24V valve. The new increased displacements allow the RDM system solution to be available for larger machines. A new speed sensor option provides more precise system efficiency

control and the 24V valve enhances the RDM to accommodate additional machine electric architectures.

The Danfoss RDM features a 12V or 24V integrated proportional shifting valve that allows smooth, on-the-go reversing using system pressure. The simplified design of the RDM eliminates the external valves and pressure supply required in typical reversing solutions — and eliminates the cost and pressure losses associated with them. The RDM is complementary to the Danfoss Series 45 open circuit axial piston pumps, PLUS+1 microcontrollers and DP700 PLUS+1 mobile machine displays, and is ideal for fan drive systems in Tier 4 agriculture, forestry and construction equipment applications. The reverse functionality of the RDM enables the fan to purge trapped dirt and debris, restoring cooling efficiency. Hose & Couplings

Tips to improve life of hose This article outlines some important points to follow which will help in selecting the optimum hose assembly for hydraulic equipment or system

O

ften you purchase a hose assembly for your hydraulic equipment or system just to experience a premature failure. In this article we will discuss some very important points to follow which will help you select the optimum hose assembly for your application, thus obtaining the maximum life for your application. Optimum life of a hose in a particular application is achieved by: l Safe hose selection Hose coupling blow-off

Twist

l l l

Safe coupling selection Safe hose assembly Safe installation of that assembly.

All of the abovementioned points are critical for getting maximum hose life. We will discuss these points here in detail.

Safe hose selection Proper hose selection is critical to a safe hydraulic system. A simple rule of thumb for proper hose selection is the word “STAMPED” where: S = Size T = Temperature A = Application M = Material P = Pressure E = Ends D = Delivery. The first step in achieving a safe hydraulic system is selecting correct components that meet your needs. Compromises in components selection, either hose or couplings, may put you in danger, as well as affect the performance and life of your system. S (Size): The inside diameter of the hose must be adequate to keep pressure loss to minimum and avoid damage to the hose due to heat generation created by excessive turbulence.

Hose crack

82

B2B Purchase

May 2015

T (Temperature): The hose selected must be capable of withstanding the minimum and maximum temperature of the system. Do not expose hose to internal or external temperatures exceeding the recommended limits. An increase of 10 C above the maximum recommended temperature may reduce the hose life by half. Also, hose will crack if flexed at temperatures below the minimum recommended.

A (Application): Select the proper hose for the application. Determine where, or how, the assembly is to be used. M (Material): Hose selection must assure compatibility of the hose tube, cover, reinforcement, couplings, o-rings, etc., with the fluid used. Many hoses are compatible with one type of fluid or another, but often times not all fluids. P (Pressure): It is essential in the hose selection process to know the system pressure, including pressure spikes. Published working pressure must be equal to or, greater than the system pressure. Pressure spikes greater than the published working pressure will shorten hose life or lead to hose ruptures E (Ends): Connecting ends of coupling must be correctly identified. D (Delivery): How much fluid must go through the hose? This will determine the size of hose that must be used. Under sizing a hose leads to increased pressure loss, while over sizing the hose adds unnecessary cost, weight and bulk.

Safe coupling selection It is critical that the hose and coupling manufacturer are the same. Don’t mix and match hose and couplings from various manufacturers. Always use couplings that are recommended by the hose manufacturer for that particular hose. Thread ends must also be compatible in order to prevent leaking or assembly blow off from equipment. Safe hose assembly Once the hose and couplings are 84

When radius is below the required minimum, use an angle adapter to avoid sharp bends.

It is important that the hose and couplings are from the same manufacturer and they are assembled using the manufacturers recommended equipment and procedures. It is critical to follow the hose manufacturer’s recommendations on hose, couplings and assembly technique. Following these recommendations will assure maximum assembly life. If recommended practices are not followed, or hose and couplings from different manufactures are used, there is a significant risk of catastrophic or premature assembly failure.

Safe installation The art of making leak proof connections with hydraulic couplings is to tighten the couplings properly at the time of installation. An over tightened (over torque) coupling may be just as apt to leak as an under-tightened B2B Purchase

coupling. Over tightening can create a coupling that is overstressed which in turn can lead to cracking and leaks or possibly complete coupling failures. In addition, it is important to pay particular attention to the hose routing. A properly installed hose ensures hazard prevention as well as ensures long life. Avoid twisted hose installation. A twisted hose installation misaligns the reinforcement (which is the strength imparting component of hose) and reduces its ability to withstand pressure. Twisting a high pressure hose as little as 7 degree may reduce service life by as much as 90 per cent. Avoid positioning hose next to heat sources. Excessive heat may cause hose cover or tube to develop cracks. As explained above, an increase of 10 C above the recommended maximum temperature range may decrease hose life by half. Also excessive low temperatures beyond recommended

limits will create cracks in the cover and/or tube when flexed. Avoid positioning hose next to metal edges or too close to other hose where any of them or both has movement. The hose cover and reinforcement may be damaged by abrasion leading to hose failure. This may also lead to safety problem. The selection process for proper hose and couplings can sometimes seem overwhelming and complicated. When in doubt it is best to contact your local hose manufacturing representative who can assist in the selection of the best hose and couplings for your application. But please keep in mind the best value is the hose assembly that gives you the maximum life, not the hose assembly that costs the least. n Authored by__ U. K. Prasad, GM-Technical, Gates India Pvt.
