he Indian construction industry is an integral part of the economy and is poised for tremendous growth due to industrialisation, urbanisation and economic development. However, the industry was going through a difficult phase for the past few years largely due to poor infrastructure development activities which is the result of acute policy paralysis. Now, as the new government is set for speedy decisions, reviving economic growth, and giving priority to infrastructure and manufacturing, the construction industry hopes for bright future. At this juncture, substantial infrastructure investments of $ 1 trillion under the 12th Five-Year Plan will be the key to India’s growth story.

SDLG has received many enquiries for road machineries and motor graders. In the past few months, growth has been enormous in the roads, ports and quarry segments compared to Q1 and Q2.”

FDI push In an effort to attract more money into the country, the government announced easing of foreign direct investment rules for the construction sector. Under the new rules, the conditions related to built-up area and minimum capitalisation have been relaxed for projects where overseas investors can put in money. The new rules also make it easier for foreign investors to exit projects.

Revving up A recovering economy, huge infrastructure investments by the government and rising urbanisation is expected to drive the construction industry growth. The government’s commitment to develop concrete roads will spur the road building sector. Residential construction is expected to grow at a CAGR of 14 per cent whereas office space construction is expected to at a CAGR of 18 per cent till 2017. Crane manufacturer ElectroMech is witnessing an increase in the levels of enquiries from different industry sectors. “With the new government in place, the renewed push to infrastructure projects and other related areas is expected

As the government is all set to enact a new bill on auctioning coal blocks, the uncertainties over the auction process is expected to be end. It will also enable provision for commercial mining of coal by private companies thereby help increase in domestic coal production. This effort will once rejuvenate Indian mining sector.

According to the new rule foreign investment is now allowed in projects with a minimum built area of 20,000 sq.m., down from a previous 50,000 sq.m. It had also halved the minimum capital investment by foreign companies to $5 million.

bC India – the platform With all such positive announcements the new government has made during their first six months in office, the construction, infrastructure and mining sectors can certainly feel that the industry is going to witness ‘achhe din’. Industry has welcomed this decision. Rohit Raj Modi, President, CREDAI NCR said, the sector has been reeling through an acute funding pressure. “The foreign investment in real estate has also gone down in last few years. Investors were shying away due to ambiguity in rules and regulations. Also they were not keen on locking their funds for longer period. With these reforms in place, they would now be able to manage their fund quite well,” he said. “We believe affordable housing would be the biggest beneficiary of

Manitowoc to introduce new tower cranes at bC India C

rane manufacturer Manitowoc will introduce two new topless tower cranes from its Potain brand at this year’s bC India. The two new Potain tower cranes, the MCT 205 and MCT 85, are topless models, which include the latest design for better on-site placement, allowing contractors to situate more cranes on projects, to speed construction. Raman Joshi, managing director of Manitowoc Cranes India, says that the new cranes will be a major highlight at bC India. “The new topless Potain cranes are easy to erect, highly efficient and very reliable – the three major requirements of crane users across the country,” he said. “The two new Potain tower cranes, together with other displays on our booth, will show visitors at bC India how we are true leaders in lifting.”

Potain MCT 205 The MCT 205 tower crane has a 10 tonnes maximum capacity and can lift 1.75 tonnes at its maximum jib end of 65 metres. With a focus on fast erection, the complete upperworks for the MCT 205 can be assembled in four lifts. The heaviest group of components is just 7.9 tonnes and the full 65 metres jib can be placed in a single lift. Attention has been paid to transportation too, with three jib sections able to fit inside a standard container. Potain MCT 85 The second model in the Potain line-up of new topless cranes is the MCT 85. Smaller than the MCT 205, it has a 5 tonnes maximum capacity and an ability to lift 1.1 tonnes at its jib end of 52 metres. This practical unit is efficiently easy to transport, needing just two trucks for the entire top portion of the crane.

Again, on-site assembly is simplified thanks to the preassembly work done at the Potain factory in Pune before the crane is delivered to the customer. For example, the counter jib and tower head are assembled as a single component and can be lifted as such. Connecting the jib is quick and easy, facilitated through the use of pin-connectors. This means the entire upperworks of the MCT 85 is connected in just two sections. Like the MCT 205, the MCT 85 can be operated as an internal climbing crane, sitting inside the building it is constructing. Mounted on 1.2 metres mast sections, the crane offers a maximum free-standing height of 33.2 metres when operating internally. Live demonstrations of each crane will be available at the company’s outdoor booth (Stand 722) at the event. n

onstruction industry has got into mechanisation mode since 1990’s in India. Till this period it was very rare to find tower cranes and batching plants even in a city like Mumbai. After recessions in mid 80’s experienced Technocrats started joining construction sector in India.

Current scenario As time progressed, some of the companies even started importing/ manufacturing construction equipment. Lot of European equipment manufacturers started supplying and/or manufacturing construction equipments in India. Schwing Stator, Putzmitzer, Dynapac, ACE, JCB, Hitachi, L&T Poclain, Bharat Heavy Machinery Ltd. have stepped in such operations. The range of plant to be found in the industry is wide and varied, as can be seen from the following list of items: Pile-driving plant, demolition plant, tower cranes, concrete mixer, excavators, pumps, scaffold, hoist, dumper,

Any constructor or company can never afford to own all types or sizes of equipment that might be used for the kind of work the company does. Contractors are frequently confronted with the problem of selection/ acquisition of the most suitable equipment and for this reason they have to cultivate the habit of ensuring that, the money invested on plant as an investment must be recoverable with a profit during the useful life of the equipment. “A contractor does not pay for construction equipment: the equipment must pay for itself by earning for the contractor more money than it consumers,” says K Rami Reddy, General Manager – Purchase, Ramky Group. “Unless it can be established in advance that a unit of equipment will earn

more than the cost, it should not be purchased.”

Purchase criteria for construction equipment

A contractor does not pay for construction equipment: the equipment must pay for itself by earning for the contractor more money than it consumers.

“Equipment sellers’ claims notwithstanding, buyers need to select equipment appropriate to their application/ requirement,” says Rajinder Raina, General Manager – Marketing, Escorts Construction Equipment. “There is no equipment that is a perfect fit for all. In the list of top criteria, the pecking order will depend upon the job application.” According to Mr Raina, following factors must be taken into account while choosing construction equipment: • Performance: There is a premium on time in all major projects these days with incentive on timely completion and penalty on delay in project completion. Machines with higher productivity/output should be evaluated on deliverables that are tangible. Invoice value is not the ultimate cost to the buyer. Premium can be paid on the price based upon the cost of ownership for 3yrs/5,000hrs working of the equipment. • Fuel efficiency: Fuel constitutes 60 per cent of the cost of operation. Fuel consumption needs to be measured/ evaluated on the basis of consumption per unit of output instead of per hour cost. • Technology: Latest may not always be the best technology for a developing country like India. Contemporary/appropriate technology is what a buyer should look for. The quality/make of major aggregates like engine, hydraulics, transmission etc define the service life of the premium items and thereby the long term cost of maintenance. The resale value of the equipment also gets defined by this. • Reliability: Timely completion asks for highly reliable equipment. Uptime of more than 95 per cent is not asking for too much these days. The cost of breakdown also means direct cost and many a time collateral loss. An excavator under breakdown renders some dumpers useless and an asphalt compactor breakdown leads to trucks with hot bitumen stranded. Therefore the cost of reliability needs proper evaluation. • After sales Support: Construction equipment being high production machines need preventive maintenance at right intervals and quick response at the time of breakdown. Proximity, capability and parts availability near the site of application is one of the major criteria for selection of the equipment. High weightage should be given to the quality of after sales support. The factors affecting the selection of construction equipment, according to Mr Reddy, are: specification requirement, specific job or operation to be done, mobility required of the equipment, weather’s influence on equipment performance, time scheduled for doing the job, balancing of interdependent equipment.

• After sales service: This includes availability of spare parts and maintenance of the equipment. Normally one year warrantee is given by the manufacturers/importers. However, main problems start after one year when it comes to get spares from the local market. For heavy equipment, sometimes manufacturer suggests stocking of some spares for 2 years. But after 2 years get over, buyer has to depend on spares mostly from importers at much higher costs.

Additional factors and probable opportunity Also some other factors need to be considered which include versatility and adaptability of the equipment, maintainability of the equipment, the efficiency of the operation with the equipment, how often parts are replaced, cost of the equipment. “The very fact is that high-rise buildings or vertical expansion in metro cities is the present trend. This provides an exciting opportunity to upgrade construction technology by using modern construction machines,” senses Mr Bangaali.

Acquiring construction equipment Selecting the correct plan for the job ideally forms part of the construction planning process and should be chosen for a particular task only after analysis of many interrelated factors, which are: the function to be carried out, the capacity of the machine, the method of operation, the limitation of the method. Once plant has been selected, the next is method of acquisition. Contractors and other users of construction equipment are concerned with a decision as whether to purchase, hire or leases (rent) equipment. “Under certain conditions, it is financially advantageous to purchase, whereas under other conditions, it is more economical and satisfactory to rent, hire or use other method of plant acquisition,” suggests Mr Reddy. Construction equipment can be acquired in one of the following ways: • Hire • Purchase • Leasing through third party • Rent with an option to purchase it at a later date.

The company also introduced ALT 188 TX tyre with the industry’s first traction tread design at the exhibition. AWL 822, claims to be the largest loader tyre produced in India, is used for loaders and dozers in highabrasion conditions. This range of tyre is manufactured using 1,300 kgs rubber, 700 kgs carbon black and silica, 200 kgs nylon fabric and 300 kg of other rubber chemicals. “With a size of 45/65-45 L5, the tyre has a special tread design with stone ejectors for protection and trouble-free service and side protector for improved resistance to shoulder and sidewall cuts,” the company said. JCB GT: the fastest digger JCB digger becomes the fastest backhoe loader in the world with a speed of 116.82 km/hr

CB’s GT digger has been crowned the fastest backhoe loader on earth after reaching a world record speed of 116.82 kms an hour on a track at Bathurst, near to Sydney. The JCB GT is originally designed to perform high-speed wheelies at racing events. The record has been confirmed by Guinness World.

Glenn McLeod, backhoe product manager for JCB dealer JCB Construction Equipment Australia (CEA) added, “The 116.82 km/hr we achieved was actually higher than the 110 km/hr benchmark set for us by the Guinness World Records. We couldn’t be happier with the results.”

The latest record is not the only one that JCB’s backhoe holds: the machine has been the world’s biggest selling backhoe loader for 14 consecutive years. The company has made more than half a million backhoes in the past 61 years since inventing the machine in 1953.

JCB Demonstration Driver Matthew Lucas - nicknamed ‘The Dig’ during the attempt - was the man who steered the JCB GT to its world record title. Matthew, 43, of Werrington, Stoke-onTrent, said, “It was great to be involved in such an exciting project and a real honour to be behind the wheel when we achieved the record.”

A lot of steel parts have been added but the weight gain is minimal – maybe five or six kgs whereas robustness has increased by many times.”

Boxy for a reason “The new towing member, the new bull bar, the new skid guard – everything has been connected to the front protection beam with huge brackets. This makes a box-like construction. The front becomes incredibly sturdy as it is an extension of the chassis. So it absorbs the energy of a low speed impact like a giant spring. And it almost completely eliminates eigenfrequency – and the shaking of the cab that comes with it,” says Hans Bergqvist.

Bounces back into shape One of the tests to measure the robustness of the construction involves trying to penetrate the front with up to 3 tonnes of pressure via a steel post. The boxy construction behaves like a spring, almost completely recovering its shape. Another test involves a heavy concrete block. At approximately 5 km/ hour the truck drives into it generating a massive amount of energy. The steel front flexes slightly, but largely regains its form. The core strength of the truck’s front and a rubbery form of polypropylene on the bumper make a winning combination.

Push and pull 32 tonnes The towing member is one piece of cast iron. “If you are lying on the axles and the wheels are spinning, an excavator – or another Volvo FMX – can have you rolling in no time. And the fact that the towing member is exposed means you can use it like a ladder to climb up the front. Wherever you step you’ll find its solid, nothing is going to break or crack,” says Hans Bergqvist. A handle opens so that the towing pin can be accessed when needed. n

Terex crawler crane to erect wind turbine in Germany “From the factory to the work site – putting a crane to work can’t get any faster than that,” enthuses Frank Strempel, who is responsible for the large cranes operated by Berlin-based crane service provider Mobi-Hub. His comment refers to the company’s new Terex CC 2800-1crawler crane, which was taken directly from the manufacturer’s facilities in Zweibrücken to a work site near Koblenz, Germany in order to erect an ENERCON wind turbine. While the crane was on its way from Zweibrücken to the Rhineland, 31 heavy haulage vehicles were also travelling from Berlin to the work site, carrying all the components that would be required for the project. A series of challenges awaited the team at the site: The space available there was extremely limited because the wind turbine was being erected right in the middle of a forest and the path that had been cleared for the vehicles was relatively narrow. In addition the crane’s boom, which had a total length of 150 metres, had to be assembled on sloping terrain. This also proved to be challenging for the assist crane required for the assembly operation, as it could not be placed just anywhere on the steep terrain. “On top of that, we had to use the suspended superlifttray with a weight of 325 tonnes when erecting the boom,” says Frank Strempel when describing an additional challenge that the team faced at the tight work site. Despite all this, the team was able to set up the crane with six assembly technicians and have it ready to go in only two days. The crane’s ease of assembly made it possible to quickly set up the machine despite the series of adverse circumstances. Moreover, the Mobi-Hub team was assisted by Terex service technicians while setting up the crane, as it was the first time the company was using the crane model.

were able to pick up the CC 2800-1 crane in Zweibrücken right when we needed it, as it definitely proved to be the perfect machine for the job,” says Frank Strempel. This was not only because the Terex crane had the required lifting capacity, but also because it is able to move while under load. In addition, its extraordinary manoeuvrability and precise controls also proved to be tremendously useful. The CC 2800-1 crawler crane was set up with a 138-metre S7 boom, a 12- metre fixed jib offset by 10 degree, and 180 tonnes of counterweight, ensuring that it would be optimally configured for the task at hand. This configuration enabled it to safely handle the three main lifts required to erect the wind turbine, which had a hub height of 130 metres, while working

with working radii of 20 to 22 metres. The team estimated a total of three days for the work: On the first day, The CC 2800-1 crawler crane lifted the 48-tonne nacelle and the generator, which was the heaviest wind turbine component at a weight of 71 tonnes. On the second day, the rotor, weighing about 68 tonnes, was assembled on the ground so that it could be lifted on time on the third. This required the crane to move towards the wind turbine, with the load already rigged, on an extra gravel path that had already been laid earlier. “The CC 2800-1 did an extraordinary job all throughout and proved that we could not have made a better decision. Not only because of the crane itself, but also because our experience with Terex has shown that we can always count on them for fast and reliable service,” Frank Strempel summarises. n

he four days of bauma China 2014, the 7th international trade fair for construction machinery, building material machines, construction vehicles and equipment, between November 25 and 28, attracted 191,000 visitors from 149 countries and regions. According to the organiser, international buyers in particular were strongly represented at bauma China – their numbers rose by 12 per cent. After China, the top ten visitor countries and regions abroad were Russia, Korea, Japan, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Indonesia – in that order. bauma China once again occupied all of the exhibition space – a total of 300,000 sq.m. – at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre. This year’s show gathered 3,104 exhibitors from 41 countries compared to 2,718 exhibitors from 38 countries in 2012. Taking part in bauma China 2014 were 2,097 Chinese exhibitors. Here they presented to the world their key products and standards of excellence. Exhibitors from outside China also featured strongly at the show, and interest in their innovations and advanced technologies was high. This year there was a further rise in the number of international exhibitors. After China, the top five exhibitor countries were Germany, USA, Italy, Korea and Japan. bauma China also featured nine national pavilions, from Austria, Finland, Germany, Italy, Korea, Spain, Turkey, UK and the USA. Views on bauma China This time bauma China is a bit slow as the presence of customers and foreign visitors is not much. I could observe that the concrete equipment segment is diversifying. The orientation towards bitumen concrete roads construction and mining is increasing while reducing focus on cement concrete. The main purpose of my visit was to see new products and study them. However, I did not find any new variety of products. There was absolutely no batching part. Presence of small-scale and local players was almost negligible. Market potential Requirements of China and India are completely different. In India the sector of RMC -- i.e. cement and concrete -have better opportunity as of now. At bC India At KYB-Conmat, we don’t believe in a variety of products offerings. We believe that we should have one and that should be the best. We should be unique. Definitely, we are gaining market share and launching new products for Chinese market which will be manufactured in China. So we take care of the local requirements. As a commitment to the Chinese market, we have invested around €50 million on a new factory coming up in Langfang near Beijing. We are one of the few successful European manufacturers in China. There are not many Indian brands visible in such a big event for Asia. What is the reason? In construction equipment segment, there are very few Indian brands having significant presence even in Indian market. It is due to our focus on manufacturing in India. But I am hopeful that the things will change in the next 10 years as the new government is increasing focus on manufacturing. We will have some strong local brands coming up. Why Indian industries should visit such international exhibitions? The overall market in India is down for the past 2-3 years. That may be one of the reasons for fewer turnouts of Indian customers. Second reason may be most of the international brands are already present in India and there is nothing new that they will see in China. The only thing that they can see is what leading Chinese manufacturers are doing. Indian customers initially had the enthusiasm to understand what the Chinese manufacturers are presenting. But today such enthusiasm is missing. Also, these Chinese companies are ventured in to India. In which segments do you find innovations or new technologies coming up? Frankly, bauma China is not the place to see innovations much with full regards to Chinese manufacturers. They have done an excellent job compared to our manufacturers and are way ahead of us. But I do not see exposure for innovations here. Innovations will be mostly on display in bauma Munich. You are one of the big players at bC India. How are you prepared for it? We will have new products in all the fronts. Wirtgen will have new milling machines in the 1-metre class for Indian market. This fair will be really very important for us as we will officially be launching the Kleemann range. We’ll probably be displaying jaw cone and screen. Selling in China is a very difficult task. China is a priceconscious market, and if we keep that in mind it becomes almost impossible to sell something here. Besides, if you wish to sell something in China, you may end up doing reverse engineering of your products. This may be the main reason why many do not participate in bauma China. What is your objective of participating in this expo? It is a part of our long-term strategy of brand building. People from across the world come to China to buy economical products, and we provide them alternatives. Why should more Indians come and visit this type of shows? Once you visit any international show, then only you’ll come to know about upcoming products, new launches, and machineries that you would not be able to use right now. Maybe after 5 years down the line, you would be able to use it. If you are aware of such technology, you would be able to put it into use. How are you prepared for bC India? At bC India, we would be launching a new joint venture with a Turkish company. The JV company will be named as Kaushik Cesan Equipments India Ltd. What is the main objective of your participation at bauma China? The main objective of the participation of Liebherr Components is to make people aware of the components offerings that Liebherr has. We intend to increase sales to external customers and therefore have to actively market our products. Our second purpose behind participation at the show is mainly meant to create new contacts, but also to keep up already existing contacts. In our booth, we exhibit hydraulic components, gearboxes and common rail systems which reflect our sales focus in the Chinese market.

As a component supplier, Liebherr possesses a great deal of application expertise. In addition to a standard range of products, we supply a large number of unique customised special solutions which can be implemented quickly and flexibly by our business units. There is no other company which offers such a wide range of components extending from diesel engines through to gearboxes.

So far, our sales subsidiaries have been established in China, North America and also in Russia. More subsidiaries will follow as we are also actively looking into other markets.

SDLG mixes greatest hits with new releases at bauma China 2014 T

he SDLG booth at bauma China 2014 showed a mix of some of the brand’s biggest sellers together with a number of new introductions, including two new innovative concept machines. The company also made a strong point of highlighting the depth of its range, showing units from across its product lines. Underlining its position as one of the world’s leading producers of wheel loaders, SDLG showed nine units from this product line, including the L9120F concept machine. The other eight ranged from the 1-tonne capacity LG918 up to the 9-tonne capacity-rated LG989. Among the wheel loaders on show was the LG938L, a 3-tonne capacity unit that is currently one of the most popular in the international marketplace. With its higher end design specifications, this unit is popular in construction, mining and aggregates applications. The ZF transmission offers four forward and three reverse gears, while the loadsensing hydraulics give the unit a smooth

feel, making operations easier for the driver. It can be equipped with up to a 2.5 cu.m. bucket and maximum breakout force is 96 kN. The LG938L has customers worldwide, including in North America, Latin America and Asia-Pacific. Another popular wheel loader pulling in the crowds at bauma China 2014 was the LG959F, notable as the first SDLG model to be sold in North America. The unit made industry history when it was delivered to Double K Excavating in Canada, after the company purchased the machine just weeks after SDLG launched in to the North American market in July of 2013. The unit has a 5-tonne capacity rating and maximum breakout force of 152 kN. It can be fitted with up to a 3.1 cu.m. bucket. From the SDLG range of excavators there was an equally strong showing and, like wheel loaders, there were nine of these units on display. Also as with the wheel loaders, there was a high capacity concept machine on show, in this case the 46-tonne rated LG6460E.

Also of interest to many international visitors was the LG6300E, which has a 30-tonne rating and powerful digging force, making it suited to a range of heavy duty applications. The LG6300E can accommodate up to a 1.9 cu.m. bucket and combines that with a maximum excavation force of 193.5 kN for excellent job site productivity. In 2013, the LG6300E was launched into Africa and two of the first units were delivered to Morocco for work on a high-speed rail link. In addition to building excavators at its manufacturing headquarters in Linyi, China, SDLG excavators are also built at the company’s manufacturing facility in Pederneiras, Brazil. “For us, bauma China 2014 was a great opportunity to underline the strength of our product line,” said Guo Shaohua. “Our focus on producing robust and reliable equipment at an excellent price is allowing us to grow our customer base and it’s important that we grow our product line to support the ever increasing needs of our customers.” n

n India, the fenestration industry witnessed a leap in the 90s with an incredible growth in the demand of doors and windows with the rising demand of the housing sector. Aluminium windows started in the early 90s while UPVC (unplasticised polyvinyl chloride) windows were introduced in the late 90s. All thanks to the surge in the construction industry and rapid industrialisation and the modernisation of airports in India, a number of global players especially dealing with aluminium products have stepped into the Indian fenestration industry. metallic material or reinforced concrete, exposed to corrosive environments, tends to have chemical reactions with the air/water. The effects of corrosion become evident on the surfaces of these materials. For example, after putting the iron into a corrosive atmosphere for an extended period, the iron starts rusting due to oxygen interaction with water on the iron’s surface. Therefore, metal equipment lacking any preventive (anti-corrosive) measures, may become rusted. There are a number of methods for preventing corrosion, especially in marine applications. Anti-corrosion measures are of particular importance in environments where high humidity, mist, and salt are factors. The loss due to corrosion in India is to the tune of $40 billion every year, which is about 4 per ecnt of the GDP.

The water penetration helps corrosion of the steel reinforcement. As the rust has more volume then the original steel bar, the rust causes tension in the surrounding concrete. As the cover of concrete is limited on the outer side, the resultant tensile force causes cracks formation and the crack permit more easier entry of water and oxygen to form more rusting that results in more increase in volume and the cracks in concrete get wider and wider. The surrounding concrete becomes partly disintegrated which finally causes spalling.

Henkel offers high temperature abrasion resistance coating Loctite PC 7000 HTARC designed to protect industrial processing equipment like coal tip burners in boilers and furnaces, against harsh temperature and abrasion environment

raditional coal tip burners are prone to wear due to exposure to high heat from furnace flame and erosion caused by coal particles in high velocity air stream. High levels of erosion lead to deformation of the coal burner tips that instantly and negatively impact the boiler efficiency. A typical boiler has four vertically tilting burners, each with four coal nozzles and two fuel ignition guns. The maximum temperature of the fire ball in the boiler is 1,200 C. The coal fired into the boiler is more than 5 microns in size with the coal firing velocity around 28-30 m/s which translates to a feed rate of approximately 110-120 TPH (tonnes per hour). At this rate of coal firing, the coal burner tips get damaged due to abrasion by the impinging coal particles. The resulting damage to the tip causes poor fuel distribution, which in turn leads to reduced combustion efficiency, coal wastage and higher heat input costs. Frequent repair and replacement of the coal burner tips extend downtime and leads to higher production losses.

The conventional practice is to prepare these nozzle tips using hard facing materials, which offer higher resistance to abrasion and oxidation but these tips are still prone to erosion and impact wear. Although these tips have a somewhat extended life, the furnace still needs frequent shutdowns to replace tips. This conventional method of hard facing requires a heat source for fusing the materials and a skilled welder. Moreover the heat fusing can cause thermal stress in the tip metal. Hard facing makes the tip surface rough affecting laminar flow of coal and air.

Measuring chemical oxygen demand in wastewater treatment plants I

t is important for wastewater treatment plants to adequately monitor the levels of organic and inorganic matter in their treatment process. The pollutant potential of a companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wastewater can be determined by measuring the concentration of organic matter present. Two tests are commonly used for this analysis: biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). COD is one of the most common tests in wastewater treatment plants; it can be performed in the facility and is a relatively fast analysis. Being able to obtain results in a timely fashion becomes important in industrial areas. Different industries release different inorganics to the waste stream; this directly impacts the effectiveness of a waste water treatment plant. Measuring COD allows for wastewater facilities to make real-time operational adjustments when necessary, and to evaluate the effectiveness of their treatment. The determination of COD involves several chemicals that are used as oxidising agents. For the simplicity of the end user, the necessary volume of these chemicals is premeasured and packaged in vials. In COD analysis, inorganic and organic substances are oxidised with potassium dichromate in sulphuric acid. Chromium has two different oxidation states, Cr6+ and Cr3+, which absorb light at 420 nm and 610 nm, respectively. Since each oxidation state can be determined at a specific wavelength, it is an effective compound for determining COD concentration using colorimetry. COD analysis begins with a known amount of potassium dichromate present in the sample vial. The sample being measured is then added to the vial and placed in a heating block for 2 hours. During this heated reflux the dichromate oxidises both the organic and inorganic material. In the oxidation process the hexavalent chromium, Cr6+ is reduced to trivalent

chromium, Cr3+. After the heated reflux, the sample vial is cooled to room temperature and a colorimeter is used to determine the COD concentration. Samples with an expected low range concentration are read on a photometer at 420 nm, which measures the decrease in Cr6+. Samples with an expected high range concentration are analysed at 610 nm, evaluating the concentration of Cr3+ in the sample. A silver sulphate catalyst is present during the reaction to aid in the oxidation of alcohols. However, chloride, commonly used in home water softeners is found in waste water. This will react with silver to form a silver chloride precipitate. In order to overcome the chloride interference, mercuric sulphate is added to the reaction. Mercuric sulphate complexes with chloride, ensuring that the concentration is lower and will not interfere with the measurement. For low and medium range meters, chloride interferes above 2,000 ppm 20,000 ppm, respectively.

They were pleased to find three different vial options available for their ranges of interest. The HI93754A-25, HI93754B-25, and HI93754C-25 were developed in accordance USEPA 410.4 method. Having all of the reagents premeasured in the supplied vials was greatly appreciated by this customer. The treatment plant also valued the ability to measure other parameters on the HI83214; this enabled them to monitor several different parameters during the wastewater treatment process and ensure all systems were working correctly. Parameters they were particularly interested in included chlorine, total nitrogen, and phosphorus. The HI839800 has two predefined temperature settings, 150 C for COD and phosphorus digestion, as well as 105 C for total nitrogen digestion, enabling them to use the same reactor for all sample preparation. n
