INNOVATION

Can drones be used in the construction industry? The answer is an emphatic yes. Today Drones can be used for site selection, surveying, and real-time job inspection

Drones for construction jobs? T

okyo-based construction equipment manufacturer Komatsu plans to use drones and driverless bulldozers for construction activities at job site in Japan.

Komatsu embarks on ‘smart construction,’ an information and communication technology (ICT) solutions for construction job sites, will use unmanned aircraft, bulldozers and excavators to automate much of the early foundation work at construction sites. Komatsu has upheld the growth strategies based on innovation in its “Together We Innovate GEMBA Worldwide” mid-range management plan launched in April 2013. Since April 2013, Komatsu has promoted launchings of intelligent machine control construction equipment, such as the D61PXi bulldozer and the PC200i hydraulic excavator. In addition to these intelligent machine control models, Komatsu has developed solutions to various problems of construction job sites and is going to start a new service business under the name of SMARTCONSTRUCTION to realise “job sites of the future”. Komatsu is going to foster the growth of this service as a core business, the company said. SMARTCONSTRUCTION is a solution service which enables customers to realise safe and smart job sites of the future. “Komatsu will not only achieve safe and high-productivity job-site operation by connecting all information on job sites through ICT, but also apply its accumulated data to the maintenance

8

work of an aging social infrastructure and reconstruction of natural disasterdestroyed regions,” the company statement said. Komatsu has established the Smart Construction Promotion Division and is going to offer this new solution business through Komatsu Rental Ltd. initially in Japan, where aging of the population is progressing quickly.

Service contents and supporting technologies of SMARTCONTRUCTION When all information related to the following six steps into KomConnect are provided as input, its new cloud platform will make the information “visible”. Then ICT will organically connect all people, machines and soil, related to the conditions of construction job sites, significantly improving productivity on the job sites.

Research and analysis of variable factors Prior to construction, research and analyse is conducted on variable factors of construction, such as soil classification and buried objects. Development of construction plans When customers input construction conditions in KomConnect, the construction plan simulation function proposes different construction patterns for each condition. When construction begins, real-time construction progress is automatically shown on the construction plan simulation. Accordingly, customers can always develop optimal construction plans.

High-precision survey of job sites The job site conditions will be accurately understand in a short period of time and produce high-precision 3-D data by mainly using an unmanned air vehicle (UAV) or drone, 3-D laser scanner, and stereo camera installed on the operator seat of construction equipment.

Advanced AI-driven construction 3-D data produced in Step #2 are transmitted to intelligent machine control construction equipment via KomConnect. As intelligent machine control equipment automatically controls its blade (in case of bulldozers) or its bucket (in case of hydraulic excavators); even inexperienced operators can perform high-precision work just like expert operators.

3-D completion drawing 2-D completion drawings of construction provided by customers are converted into 3-D drawings. By “visualising” the difference between 3-D data of the job site conditions and 3-D completion drawings, customers can have an accurate understanding of the area, shape and volume of earth to be moved prior to construction.

Use of construction data on completion All construction information, when intelligent machine control equipment is used, is stored in KomConnect. Accumulated data can also be used in the maintenance of an aging social infrastructure as well as reconstruction work of natural disaster-destroyed regions. n

Smart roads make smart cities E The smart cities have to be connected with each other through expressways and need to have well laid out road connectivity within the cities. - Rajinder Raina, General Manager – Marketing, Escorts Construction Equipment

scorts Construction Equipment, a major player in construction and material handling equipment, offers wide range of soil and asphalt vibratory compactors, tandem vibratory roller, and motor grader in the road equipment segment. In an interview with B2B Purchase, Rajinder Raina talks on the emerging opportunities for road equipment business and his company’s offerings.

BS III and BS IV are a move towards better fuel efficiency however there are other factors as well. EGR (exhaust gas recycling), inter cooling etc. have become standard. There are electronic data cards, stroke smart cards which monitor and regulate various functions to make engines work intelligently to deliver best fuel efficiency under variable load conditions as these engines sure subject to varying load cycles.

The government has come up with ‘Make in India’ campaign and ‘100 Smart Cities’ project. How do you see these initiatives to benefit road building segment. The concept of 100 smart cities is a holistic one wherein it shall all start from construction of roads that shall be good enough to cater to the traffic of next few decades. Some of them would be greenfield whereas widening of most of the existing would also be on. This will throw up demand for the entire range of road building equipment.

Please share the details of your major offerings in the sector of road equipment. Escorts offers complete range of soil and asphalt vibratory compactors and also has a mini tandem vibratory roller. In soil category, Escorts offers compactors of two weight classes. We also offer motor grader as a part of road equipment. Work is on to upgrade the equipment to meet the future requirements.

The smart cities have to be connected with each other through expressways and need to have well laid out road connectivity within the cities. We can say that smart roads make smart cities.

Brief us on the new technologies in the field to reduce fuel consumption yet not losing operational efficiency. As per the thumb rule, 60 per cent of the operational cost goes into fuel. This makes fuel consumption a major differentiating factor between any two machines. However fuel consumption should be measured in terms of the output delivered per unit of fuel consumed – absolute fuel consumption in production machines has no significance.

PROCUREMENT GUIDELINES

Tower cranes: safe lifting Today tower cranes are finding their use on large scale on sites especially for high-rise buildings. This article takes a look at tower cranes’ functions and emphasises from a point of view of safety

T

he cranes that are used on top of tall buildings, high-rise building or skyscrapers are known as ‘tower cranes’. The base of a tower crane is a concrete slab that is fixed to the ground. The base connects to the tower which gives the crane its height. At the top of the tower is a slewing unit which allows the crane to rotate using its gear and motor. The crane builds itself up, level by level, using its own hoisting power. To assemble to a tower crane initially, construction crew uses a (smaller) mobile crane to assemble the jib and machinery. The tower rises from the base, and grows itself one section at a time. A top climber or a climbing frame is used for this process. It fits between the top of the tower and the slewing unit. “Around the world, buildings and civil engineering products are constructed differently. However, whatever architecture and construction styles we are working with, there is design of tower cranes which is just right and well suited for heavy lifting and placement duties on the jobsites,”

22

February 2015

says Vijay Kalantri, Chairman and Managing Director, Dighi Port Limited. “Tower cranes also help us to save time on jobsite by easily moving materials from one area to another. It sets up quickly, feature economical, powerful motors and provides high lifting capacity and it also adds to minimal downtime.”

Latest developments As tower cranes have been looking promising through their potential and reliable results given as well, let us see now what are the latest developments made in the field of tower cranes. India’s first Potain MCi 48 C gets to work Divakar Construction & Builders has taken delivery of India’s first Potain MCi 48 C tower crane. The 2.5-tonne crane, which is aimed at mid-level construction job sites, is already at work at a hospital in Mangalore. The advantage of the Potain MCi 48 C is its size; transportation is a hassle-

free process as the crane can work comfortably even on congested city job sites. The MCi 48 C’s compact size also means that it consumes less electricity and can be installed easily, without compromising on performance.

Tower cranes also help us to save time on jobsite by easily moving materials from one area to another.

Vijay Kalantri, Chairman and Managing Director, Dighi Port Limited.

PROCUREMENT GUIDELINES SCHWING Stetter brings tower cranes Germany’s SCHWING Stetter launched an exclusive range of SCHWING-XCMG Tower Cranes in India. “SCHWING concrete pumps and SCHWING-XCMG Tower crane will work in synergy to suit their requirements. The increasing demand for mechanisation of construction activities is pushing the requirement of tower cranes in India that are able to lift heavier loads and be more productive yet be affordable to own and operate,” the company said.

Two-way operation It is interesting to see how cranes get to the top of skyscrapers. For the purpose, there are two different ways that a tower crane can be used. Mr Kalantri explains the same as follows: • External: Tower crane can be used externally where it expands upwards on the outside of the building, the base of the crane is fixed on a concrete slab in the ground, and the crane tower is erected beside the building using smaller, mobile cranes. Once the building is about 180 feet tall, the crane is fastened to the building with steel collars, and new segments are inserted into the crane’s backbone. To add segments to itself, the crane has a special climbing section—a big metal sheath that scales the outside

The person in control of any site has the responsibility to ensure that health and safety on the site is managed effectively.

Mohd. Farook, Senior Manager – Purchase, Umang Realtech Pvt. Ltd.

of the crane tower. This sheath raises the arm above the last vertebra and temporarily supports it, then takes in a new tower segment from the arm. The sheath holds that segment in place while workers bolt it in. They repeat this process every 180 feet or so: The crane constructs the building, then it’s fastened to the building, then it receives new vertebrae to grow taller. • Internal: It can be used internally where generally erected the elevator shaft and the building are built around it, the crane stands inside the center of the building, in a kind of makeshift courtyard, where it constructs the skyscraper around itself about a hundred feet at a time. A hydraulic cylinder at the crane’s base elevates it through the hollow middle of the building to a higher floor. Then workers slide steel beams underneath the crane to give it a sturdy new footing, and the crane begins building again.

Getting back down Reverse the process to assemble; to disassemble themselves tower cranes construct derricks on the rooftop of the finished project. These derricks then help dismantle the tower cranes, and in the case of internal climbers, lower their parts one by one to the ground using extremely long cables. Once the parts reach the ground, they are taken back to the rental service on flatbed trucks, and then the workers take apart the derricks. Most of the derricks’ parts can just take the construction elevator. External climbers, however, can jack themselves all the way back down.

Safety “While transferring the equipment from time to time one needs to take small tools and various other items up and down from the cabs’ machinery desks of tower crane,” says Mohd. Farook, Senior Manager – Purchase, Umang Realtech Pvt. Ltd. Information on the safe use of tower cranes is also available from some

Cranes

sources. For example, Constructions Plant–hire Association (CPA) publishes a series of Technical Information Notes (TINs). These TINs which are continually being updated and added are available to offer guidance on specific aspects of tower crane operations.

Special issues of tower crane To use tower cranes for desired purposes and various applications, one needs to understand some of the special issues related to them as well. Mr Farook describes such issues as follows: • The lifting team: The lifting team may consist of an appointed person, supervisor, crane co-ordinator, tower crane operator and slinger/signalers the complexity and size of job will determine the team structure the overall planning of lifting operations and carrying out risk assessments/ the completion of site ‘lift plan’ and maintaining record of thorough examination, inspections and functions test. • Responsibilities of principal contactor (on site): The person in control of any site has the responsibility to ensure that health and safety on the site is managed effectively. Things like welfare, first aid, fire and evacuation procedures, site security, crane security and access control etc should be taken care of. • Operator qualifications and health: All persons using work equipment should have got adequate training for purpose of health and safety. • Resolutions of Issue on site: As a tower crane operator there could be times, through no fault of your own, when you may be involved in handled correctly, may interrupt the safe and smooth working of the site. • Lifting operations: It should never be used for lifting loads that are in excess of the crane’s rated capacity (safe working load) • Wind and taking the crane out of service: The tower crane manual specifies the maximum wind speed at which the crane should be taken out of service. Also it tells about the precautions to be taken at the time. n February 2015

Volvo FMX: tough, robust and enhanced Asok George is responsible for exterior design at Volvo Trucks. He has a gift for interpreting the Volvo brand in a visual language Design The new Volvo FMX looks a lot tougher because the truck itself has become a lot tougher. You could say the design is very honest – it lets you see the truck for what it is: a highly robust and durable piece of equipment. The Volvo FMX is a construction truck that expresses toughness and robustness in a distinctively Volvo way. It has a character that looks right in a quarry or a mine. In addition, its design is also sophisticated – it wouldn’t look out of place at an airport or in the city among people. It’s that likeable toughness that makes it true to the brand. In fact, all the familiar FMX elements are there; they have just been enhanced and improved. The bull bar is tougher and larger, as are the corner bumpers which now have the same exposed fasteners for easier replacement. The central towing device is no longer covered in plastic panels and the new headlights are positioned higher up where they are less likely to get damaged.

If one of the sturdy corner bumpers or body panels should need replacing, this can now be managed very quickly and easily. Other visual enhancements include a larger iron mark and a moulded slash. But how will all this come across when the truck is in the field?

Born to work The people who drive the Volvo FMX are professionals. They appreciate the details that help them do a better job in everyday situations. The robustness of this design is going to help them get more work done with less annoying delays. Of course, it’s going to get scarred and messed up in the field. However, this will only increase the truck’s appeal. Moving up  The truck makes a powerful impression when you see it in real life. The lower front of the cab is in fact 40 millimetres higher and the front skidplate emphasises its improved ground clearance. The new headlights incorporate the signature V-shaped LEDs like the rest of the new Volvo family, but in a unique, more compact form.

Parting words  With the first FMX, Volvo created a design icon within the construction segment. Now, just three years later, the company is raising the benchmark somewhat higher. n Authored by-

Road design to optimise efficiency and safety Esurvey CADD provides a complete and comprehensive design solution which caters to all the design requirements and also attempts to solve many complex design problems.

R

ecently the Minister of Road Transport and Highways has indicated that India will be adding 30 Km of new road per day to road inventory which is a 10 fold increase from current 3-km per day. Now central government has started clearing many highway projects, preparation of new national highways and improvement of urban and rural roads under ‘Pradhanmantri Gram Sadak Yojana’ which is getting developed all over India. Proper road design is one of the major challenges that comes up while starting a new road project or improvement of existing road (road widening project).

What is Road design The geometric design of roads is the branch of highway engineering concerned with the positioning of the physical elements of the roadway according to standards and constraints. The basic objectives in geometric design are to optimise efficiency and safety while minimising cost and environmental damage. Geometric roadway design can be broken into three main parts: alignment, profile, and cross-section. Combined, they provide a three-dimensional layout for a roadway.

Geometric design The geometric designs are referred to the latest IRC publications and MORT&H circulars regarding design standards for National Highways in India, geometric design guidelines. The relevant Indian design standards considered include: IRC Publications IRC: 64-1990: Guidelines for Capacity of Roads in Rural Areas (First Edition) IRC: 65-1976: Recommended Practice for Traffic Rotaries IRC: 66-1976: Recommended Practice for Sight Distance on Rural Highways IRC: 73-1980: Geometric Design Standards for Rural (Non-Urban) Highways IRC: 86-1983: Geometric Design Standards for Urban Roads in Plains. Sequence of design • Importing surveyed data • Creating a DTM (Digital Terrain Model) • Designing horizontal and vertical alignments • Creating cross sections along the horizontal alignment and vertical profiles • Computing the earthwork and

design layer volumes • Presentation of drawings. All these activities are done in sequence to present a perfect design. ESurvey CADD is one of the most popular home grown software to achieve these activities quickly and accurately. Esurvey CADD provides a complete and comprehensive design solution which caters to all the design requirements and also attempts to solve many complex design problems. With ESurvey CADD most of the road design aspects such as horizontal curve, vertical curve, super elevation, road widening, profile correction, earthwork calculation can be achieved accurately and easily. Impressive cross section drawings can be created from ESurvey CADD which makes this product unique. n Authored by-

Access Equipment

INDUSTRY SPEAKS

Haulotte focused on providing state-of-the-art equipment at optimum price E Actually it is solely the customer’s prerogative whether to purchase a renowned global brand which has a stamp of quality and durability on it at higher cost or a cheaper alternative. - Souma Ray, General Manager – India, Haulotte India Pvt. Ltd.

stablished in 1881, Haulotte is a major European manufacturer and supplier for people and material handling equipment. Its local subsidiary, Haulotte India, is the hub for Haulotte machines and access equipment in India. In an interview with B2B Purchase, Souma Ray gives an overview on the market trends and his company’s initiatives.

How do you look at the recent trends of access equipment demand? Although the trend in demand of access equipment has been encouraging, yet considering the immense potential of the usage of such products the Indian market is still very nascent. We are confident of the fact that as the awareness of usage of the access equipment increases the market will expand exponentially. The need of the hour is to have stringent legislations in place regarding safety to work at heights. Manufacturers and the rental companies of access equipment need to work hand in hand with various governmental authorities to push for such legislation. End of the day it’s all about safety.

Chinese companies seems to be dominating the global CE space. Is it true even in the case of access equipment business? It’s not like that Chinese companies are dominating in the field. Though there are a few good brands striving to make quality products in-line with the global standards but the majority churn out cheap equipment whose quality and durability is susceptible. Actually it is solely the customer’s prerogative whether to purchase a renowned global brand which has a stamp of quality and durability on it at higher cost or a cheaper alternative.

30

B2B Purchase

February 2015

Moreover, considering the fact that access equipment is all about safety, the quality of Chinese products is yet to reach the global standards. The global perception of most customers is not to make compromises on safety at heights and hence for them reliability and quality of the product is of utmost importance.

How do you foresee the anticipated massive wave of consolidation in the CE industry? The industry has seen years of stagnancy and dwindling demands owing to the political and economical situation that the country was in until mid of 2014. However, with a stable and foresighted central government the situation has gradually started getting better. Business sentiments have improved with this the CE industry also seeing a revival and consolidation. The focus of the current government towards infrastructure shall be the main driver towards the growth of the CE industry. How would you like to shape up your business as far as Indian market is concerned? Haulotte is one of the biggest manufacturers of access equipment in the world and excelling in India. Haulotte India is driven by our global strategy of ‘Customer Proximity’. This involves the establishment of a commercial and services network closer to our customers, with teams of professionals who understand the needs and expectations of their markets, and provide the support to their clients. We constantly strategise in order to consolidate our presence and position in the industry. Our objective is to provide with our customers equipment that are 32

state-of-the-art but at an optimum price. We also offer the after sales spare part, service support and training to our customers directly as well as through our network of dealers and resellers. We lay strong emphasis in training of operators and maintenance staff of our customers because these contribute towards safe working and optimum utilisation of our equipment. Haulotte India is one of the leading council members of IPAF India, which is a global organisation to promulgate and train users on safe operations of access platforms.

What will be the demand drivers for your products? Demand for access equipment in India has been steadily growing across various sectors like infrastructure, construction, power, aviation, shipyards, manufacturing, hotels, malls, facility management etc. It is extremely encouraging to see the new government’s strong commitment of massive investment in the transport infrastructure like rail, metro, port, road and airport and also in 100 smart cities project. With such mega projects on the anvil, the demand

for access equipment will definitely see a sharp increase.

Did you launch any new product in the Indian market? We have introduced our latest diesel articulated boom lift HA16RTJ during the bC India show in December 2014. Also, one of the recent technological advancements we have introduced in our diesel boom lifts is the Entrapment Prevention System, ACTIV Shield Bar. This is a secondary guarding system that ensures safety of the worker in an entrapment situation. The system once activated allows on reverse and down function of the machine thus preventing further danger to the worker. The system unlike some of our competitors offerings can be reset from the platform itself, thus saving both time and money.

Brief us on its unique features. HA16RTJ offers higher productivity and performance, driving comfort and ease of use and transport. It has been designed to access to the most difficult and restricted working areas. It offers the best lifting speed of the market with less than 40 sec.

With fully proportional and simultaneous movements it allows quick, progressive, simultaneous movements with precise and smooth control and ultimately the comfort and safety feeling. It is designed with permanent anti-slipping differential that improves the traction on rough terrain. Additionally the hydraulic differential lock can be activated manually for a maximum efficiency on more difficult rough terrain conditions. The machine is fitted with curedon solid tyres which guarantee an optimal rough terrain capability and a longer durability than foam filled tyres. The heart of the machine is powered by a KUBOTA engine which has a variable motor speed. The performance is adapted to the real needs of the machine and this results in: noise level is reduced by 50 per cent plus it gives up to 15 per cent reduction in fuel consumption. An upper control box cover and tool tray are standard equipment of this machine. In simple words, Haulotte takes care of value with high level of durability and reliability, excellent robustness and ease of maintenance. n

We’re here to lead ”...it is always a matter of pride to let the industry know that with our extremely user-friendly and advanced technology, JASO will eventually lead in the long run,” saysSaikat Bagchi, Director - Marketing, Sales & BD, Jaso India

S

tarted in 2008, JASO India is gradually increasing its footprint in the market. Now the company would like to expand aggressively. In an interview with B2B Purchase, Saikat Bagchi talks about the company and future plans

JASO is a key player in the Indian overhead cranes market. Tell us a bit about the current market scenario for this business. Our products are specialised and range from 1-tonne to 100-tonne in various categories like EOT, Gantry and SemiGantry, Cantilever, Jib, Transfer Carriages, and Lifting Hoists. These will well fit into the policies as have been declared by the new Government at the Centre. Brief us on JASO India, your technologies and journey. JASO started its journey way back in 1963 in Spain. We started our Indian operations in 2008 and now have already in our cap about 400 installations to the diversified industries. We take a real commitment on each equipment put into operation for our every customer all over the world. We boast about our cranes are the most reliable products, safe and provides very high performance levels. We guarantee these high standards by incorporating strict quality controls into each phase of production. We have also introduced a Quality Management System, certified in accordance with ISO 9001: 2000 requirements. Ultimate European technology applied on engineering of the

manufacturing of our cranes in India, with all international approvals and certificates, continuous innovation, dynamism and adaptation to the markets has also enabled us to take a leading role and provide custommade solutions on each individual case ensuring highest quality and meeting the most demanding customer needs. Achieving highest level of excellence has always been our yearning and this has made us grow in a fast way, gradually receiving wide based recognition.

Are you going to introduce any new product? We are working on some new product introduction soon but the type of products is yet to be finalised. We are still on the initial stage but are heading towards the right direction of the market as we believe that’s where we have not put our hands until now. However, we would like to assure you that it would be an aggressive approach and competitors have to watch! What are the key technological advancements in overhead cranes segments? The control mechanisms for overhead travelling cranes have been refined and modernised to accommodate the changing needs of the end-users. The major developments involved the increased efficiency and wider range of applications for automated cranes regulated by programmable controllers or other computers. Such improvements brought forth the introduction of automated cranes to a wide range of

manufacturing environments, servicing locations as varied as an aerospace plant and a textile factory. The wider acceptance of automated control systems also facilitated a variety of interfacing applications, linking overhead cranes with other types of materials handling equipment such as monorails, robots, and automated guided vehicles. Promising technological developments of special note included more sophisticated radio programmable logic controllers, self-propelled floor cranes, cordless and infrared control technology and retrofitting innovations.

What are some of your long- and short-term objectives? It is the dream of any business to see itself leading the market. JASO is also not aware averse of this phenomenon and we are having positive plans for touching long- and short-term objectives. Since JASO has entered the Indian market only recently, our short-term objective is to get footprints in almost all territories in addition to our regional presence in all the metropolitans. We have plans to increase the sales and service teams to cater to our customers in a more effective manner and have almost a door service for their requirements. Having said so, it is always a matter of pride to let the industry know that with our extremely user-friendly and advanced technology, JASO will eventually lead in the long run. n

Hiremymachine: a website helping hire machines

T

he construction industry with its vast resources of equipment always faces a huge task to utilise its machinery lying idle and slowly turning into useless pieces of metal or scrap, judiciously. With the machines staying idle, it further breaks the economics, this is where www.hiremymachine.in comes to play. The company has formed a machinebank to utilise any idle equipment by registering on the web portal and choose from an array of machine on display as required. Machine owners and huge construction companies can rent out their idle piece of equipment or multiple machines on their own terms and conditions. It is a win-win situation for both parties with machinery being put to use and the owner earning rent rather than see his equipment turn to dust. It does

not only have construction companies in its mind as potential hirers, but also farmers who use a lot of high-end machines to sow and harvest their crops, also for levelling their fields and also digging of wells.

Speaking of logistics The portal makes great sense when it comes to logistics. The web portal locates the nearest machine at the best price available and allocates the same to the user. The entire process saves time and user added costs to transport the equipment to the designated spot. How it is useful Currently in India only 8-9 per cent hiring happens while in countries such as Japan the hiring rate is 88-90 per cent. The company believes that once the machine owners understand this process and figure out the multiple advantages, they would prefer hiring

machinery over purchasing new equipment every time. This will lead to competition and the buyer can hire machinery at the best prices available.

Principle The company believes in simplicity and a user-friendly model, hence does not charge anything till it helps get one business. In other words, it does not charge anything for uploading machines’ profiles or searching for specific machinery; only when client cracks a deal, it charges a one-time commission and exchange data of both parties concerned. n Contact

leverage our expertise to the industry with our knowledge bank and technical research work done.

What makes you different from your competitors? As we see it, competition is a good thing for the growth of the market. In terms of the product offerings, we are confident that our quality is second to none. And when we say this, we say it with a lot of pride and conviction. We know the market, we know the competition and we know where to play. In last 3 years, we have made a solid footprint in terms of reference projects and key customer wins. It was all possible because of the unmatched quality and proactive service we provide. We have a strong and reliable distribution network in place which can take care of any requirement – technical or commercial – in all the major markets in India. We are also strong in roofing and building material products that complement our composite products. In fact, we have established a facility for XPS foam, which will help in thermal insulation.

Now that you have come up with Cem-FIL and Anti-Crack AR glassfibre. Please tell us more on that. The Cem-FIL fibre is widely used for all the GRC applications. In India we have been providing GRC solutions for over 15 years now and the satisfaction level of the customers is appreciating year over year thanks to our continuous improvement. Project: Megapolis, Hinjewadi, Pune

Project: Brewsky, Bengaluru

The performance and results of the micro fibre Anti-Crak HD is something of which we are very proud. Within the first 3 years of its introduction in the market, we are able to witness growing demand for this product from projects in various cities. To name a few Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai and also among smaller cities in Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Aurangabad, Raipur, Coimbatore, Guntur, etc. Customers have found a unique solution for dramatically reducing shrinkage cracks (both plastic and thermal). Additionally, they are observing some gains in compressive and flexural strength, even as early as day one. For concrete pavements and slabs-on-grade, we propose a macro fibre, Anti-Crak HP 67/36, (where HP stands for High Performance). This is a revolutionary fibre with the advantages of high initial and residual

strength performance with easy application in pumping or pouring. Unlike other flexible fibres Anti-Crak fibres have a tensile strength of 1,700 MPa and the elastic modulus of 72 GPa, making it an ideal reinforcement for hardened concrete. Another important characteristic is its specific gravity of 2.68 gm/cm3, which is similar to the aggregates in concrete. As such, it does not sink or float during compaction by vibration. By replacing the welded wire mesh or steel reinforcement, it is easily dispersed in the mixer, is pumpable, and greatly reduces fabrication time, whilst providing a uniformly distributed reinforcement which resists cracking throughout the life of the concrete, and displays no problems with surface finish.

Would you like to share your target for the current fiscal and future expansion plans? We are here to stay and grow the market. With two manufacturing locations and global technology, we are here to ‘Make in India for India’. We look to contribute to ‘Green India Grow India’. The company is both looking to strengthen its existing streams such as fibreglass insulation and aesthetic roofing solutions, and entering new areas. We are open to considering acquisitions and forming joint ventures to tap new businesses, while expanding organically with products we make here. n

NEW LAUNCH

Decorative concrete for elegant flooring appearance that is unimaginable considering the current way of laying and finishing concrete. Stamped concrete, often called textured or imprinted concrete, is concrete that replicates stones such as slate and flagstone, tile, brick and even wood. Suitable for beautifying pool decks, driveways, entries, courtyards, and patios, stamped concrete is the perfect outdoor paving choice. Stamped overlay is a thin polymer and cement modified topping over existing strong, stable and leveled concrete surface. 1/4” thin stamped overlay gives the exact look and feel of conventional full depth stamped concrete but is applied directly to existing concrete. This is an appropriate way of enhancing the look of existing, sound concrete without actually relaying a fresh concrete of 3-4“on top.

Stamped concrete: European fan with seamless transition

D

ecorative concrete business is tremendously growing in India and renowned architects have started recommending decorative concrete systems to their esteemed clients over conventional landscapes materials. The demand for the interior coloured concrete flooring (cement based as well as resin based) for new commercial projects (shopping malls, multiplex, restaurants and residential sector etc) is increasing. Seeing the rapidly increasing response to these texturising and pigmenting trends for the concrete floorings, Hicrete Decorative Systems is bringing the concept of stamped and decorative concrete which is a well established concept in various parts of the world. There are 4 flooring systems included in decorative concrete. They are: • Stamped concrete and stamped overlay flooring systems • Spray textured stenciled overlay flooring systems • Microtoppings with acid stains/polymer stain and concentrated dye stains floor systems. • Decorative designer metal fusion epoxy/pu floor systems. These exclusive ranges of flooring systems are suitable for both interior and exterior applications.

Stamped concrete and stamped overlay flooring systems Stamped concrete is an innovative way of decorative concrete in Situ i.e. green and wet concrete, as it is being laid on site. It not only combines the excellent properties of a M20/ M25 grade concrete but also imparts it a natural stone like

The biggest advantage of stamped overlays is the reduced application time of 48 hours as against 10 days in case of stamped concrete systems. The crude method of broadcasting of colour hardener too is eliminated by making the colour an integral part of the ¼” overlay system. Mainly, stamped concrete overlays allow to duplicate the beauty and texture of natural stone, brick, slate, wood, and other materials without having to replace the concrete.

Benefits • Easy maintenance • Durability and high quality • Variety of available textures • Unlimited colours, patterns, designs, textures • Harder and stronger than conventional tile • Harder than wood flooring • Higher level of scratch resistance. Applications • Roadways, park ways, walk ways • Drive ways and patios • Industrial, commercial, residential interior and exterior applications • Installed much faster than tile • Existing concrete • High traffic area, commercial or residential, swimming pool decks, terraces etc. Authored by-

Precast concrete: a right cast for construction

Bridge girder precast concrete segment at site

Nowadays the technique of using precast concrete is being implemented on large scale for better and durable outcomes. Let us explore why it is so beneficial over the traditional concrete

P

recast concrete is a construction product produced by casting concrete in a reusable mould or form which is then cured in a controlled environment, transported to the construction site and lifted into place. In contrast, standard or traditional concrete is poured into sitespecific forms and cured on site. Precast stone is distinguished from precast concrete by using a fine aggregate in the mixture, so the final product approaches the appearance of naturally occurring rock or stone. In mega projects in the field of infrastructure, precast concrete plays important role to complete the project on time and to meet International quality standard consistently. Some of the mega projects, which use precast concrete are: • Hydro tunnel in hydel project • Underground metro tunnel project • Bridge girder segment casting • Break water tetrapods

Why precast concrete Precast concrete makes sure that structures offer durability for long time. The structural strength and density of precast concrete makes it an ideal choice for safe rooms in houses. Precast

concrete storm shelters can easily be installed for protection in tornado-prone and hurricane-prone areas. Further, precast concrete provides the designer with unlimited possibilities of architectural experiments. It can be shaped in a cost-effective manner. Design flexibility is possible in both colour and texture by varying aggregate and matrix colours, size of aggregates, finishing processes and depth of exposure. “Quality standards can be easily achieved using precast concrete as per International Standards on consistent basis,” says Arun Banavali, Industry expert and former VP – Sourcing and Supply Chain, HCC Ltd. “ This is because there are cast/manufactured in a well established casting yard with sophisticated facilities to manufacture concrete, transport, place, compact and cure.”

Bridge girder precast concrete segment at site Facilities like good batching plant, vibratory compactors, well fabricated moulds etc. help in achieving accuracies in precast concrete. Use of such facilities brings in automation and speedier

production of such precast concrete, thus bring down the construction costs. In addition, this helps in meeting the peak demand of such precast concrete in projects. “In many projects there are large number of requirements of precast concrete segments. If they are cast in situ, it would take long project time,” as Mr Banavali puts in. “However, if they are cast in the casting yard from the

start of the project continuously while the project is getting mobilised at the project site, these large number of cast segment would be available to transport and erect at project site when the project site is ready. This will reduce the project cycle time, means reducing the fixed project cost and thus making the company more competitive in construction.” “By using precast technology, it is possible to achieve very rapid speed of erection, with quality control and uniformity of products,” says Dharmendra Punjani, Head Purchase, Relcon Infraprojects Ltd. “High quality comes because of the controlled conditions in the factory.” Further Mr Punjani describes some of the other reasons in support of using precaste technique. These are as follows: • Time saving: Precast concrete saves a lot of space on site as it is usually on site when required • Cost-effective: Precast concrete also saves money in terms of labour on site as it can be assembled by semi-skilled

operatives • Ease of operation: Since precast is manufactured in a controlled casting environment it is easier to control the mix, placement, and curing • Suitable for repetitive construction: It is possible through multiple use of formwork • No weather issue: Weather gets eliminated as a concerned factor. One can cast in any weather and get the same results, which allows to perfect mixes and methods • Repeatability: It’s easy to make many copies of the same precast product by maximising repetition. One can get plenty of value from a mould and a set-up. “Precast concrete can reduce air pollution and save water which is normally used for curing on site. It also controls mosquito breeding,” adds Mr Punjani. “It reduces time and money on maintaining inventory and wastage of steel, cement, aggregate, chemical etc.”

Ecological and reusable As it is made of natural raw materials (stones, gravels, sand, cement), locally available almost everywhere and in an enormous quantity, precast concrete minimises the whole life cycle impact on the environment when compared with other construction materials. It forms an ecological solution as negligible waste is created during the production of precast units as the panels are formed, not cut from stock lengths of material. Only sufficient concrete is batched to fill the available moulds. At the end of the economic life of a building, its cladding can be dismantled with the precast panels either refurbished for re-used or crushed to gain hardcore. Hence Recycling is

Concrete

possible. Precast concrete units can entirely be re-used or recycled. The exterior of a precast concrete structure can be left unpainted without damage from the elements. If painting is desired, repainting is needed only every five to ten years. Precast concrete interiors are less subject to damage, and easier to wash.

Major considerations Mr Banavali explains major considerations while choosing precast concrete and the same are as follows: • In major mega projects like hydro tunnel, underground metro tunnel, bridge and breakwaters marine projects, there are huge number of precast concrete segments and also use of Tetrapods. These need good manufacturing facilities which is possible only in precast concrete yard • To reduce project cycle time in above applications, major construction companies go for precast concrete • To make use of world-class manufacturing facilities like accurate moulds, handling facilities, steam curing, mould vibratory compactors, to derive accuracy and precision, in the precast concrete • To achieve consistent quality • To have safer construction, as in precast there are well laid construction equipment • To eliminate or minimise concrete wastages, as in precast there do exist better handling facilities. Conclusion In all, keeping in mind the various benefits offered by precast concrete, it is advisable to use it for better results, both in terms of aesthetic sense and durability. Also its cost-effectiveness and reusability makes it the preferred way to be implemented. n

Novablast: unique, soundless cracking agent

T

o cater to the demand of construction industry, Novatech India introduced “Novablast” – a high range soundless non-explosive massively expansive mortar cracking agent. This innovative product has created a revolution in the field of rock excavation and concrete demolition. Bengaluru-based Novatech India is one of the leading companies in the country offering blasting and building demolishing services. The comprehensive range of chemicals offered by the company includes products like soundless rock breaking chemicals, silent blasting chemicals and non-explosive blasting chemicals. The company also specialises in building demolishing services and is considered a pioneer in this field. Novablast works on a simple engineering principle – “fractures follow the path of least resistance”. The path of least resistance is created by a hole pattern drilled in the rock or concrete. Novablast is simple to prepare. One needs to just add water and mix into the prior drilled holes and leave to set. Novablast progressively expands at a pressure of 19,000 psi, including

46

fractures on the mass between the drilled holes due to buildup of pressure in the rock or concrete. Depending on the type of rock or concrete one will be able to use a mechanical excavation method within 24 hrs to remove the excess rock or concrete. What is a non-explosive demolition/cracking agent? A non-explosive demolition / cracking agent is a soundless and safe demolition agent that is quite different from other ordinary demolition agents such as explosives and dangerous materials. It does not cause and fly rock, noise, ground vibration, gas, dust or any other environmental pollution when used properly. As requirements for demolishing rock and reinforced concrete in construction are increasing in tight quarters, the use of explosives and explosive agents is becoming more restricted as far as safety and environment pollution problems are concerned. Non – explosive demolition/ cracking are the solution.

A non–explosive demolition / cracking agent is a powder with amazing 19,000 PSI expansive strength when mixed with common water poured into holes, the agent breaks reinforced concrete and rock safely and quietly, while providing ‘silent’ cracking. Since non–explosive demolition / cracking agent provides controlled demolition according to drilling patterns, it is very easy to break the reinforced concrete and all kinds of stone into desired sizes and shapes, without noise, vibration or dust.

Application areas of non-explosive demolition/cracking agent Reinforced concrete demolition and cutting: In demolition, concrete cutting and excavating industry, non-explosive demolition / cracking agent helps to break reinforced concrete and rock into chunks, so one may easily cut off rebar haul it away with a crane or truck without damage remaining part. Rock breaking and excavation: In mining and quarrying industry, the agent helps to achieve perfect slabs and blocks from limestone, onyx, marble, granite or any other type of stone you

Profile are working with. Compared to blasting, non-explosive demolition/ cracking agent avoids waste of valuable stone, high insurance, costly storage and labour.

agent can also be applied along with traditional methods like primer cord, hydraulic breaker, diamond blade saw and jackhammer to help cut cost, work time and increase safety.

Stone quarrying and dimension: Non-explosive demolition / cracking

Also with its silent operation, the product is perfect for residential, school, hospital and airport area. It offers the perfect alternative to blasting, breakers, jackhammer, diamonds saws, etc.

Salient features of Novablast • Amazing 19,000 PSI expansive strength when mixed with common water. • Easy to use, just mix with water, pour into holes, then it expands. • Cracks reinforced concrete, limestone, flagstone, granite, marble and onyx safely and quietly. • An alternative to blasting, diamond sawing and jack hammering, which without noise, vibration, dust by providing silent expansive cracking.

In addition, precast facades mark PIIPL’s entry into the architectural precast sector. Apart from thin wall panels with patterns/perforated walls etc. The company has now progressed to produce much more complicated, thin and angular façade elements.

Recent technologies “To cater to demands of fully precast buildings, the industry has to continuously strive to provide solutions for longer spans for heavier loads in ultra efficient cross sections, without compromising on time and quality,” says Mr Bhate. In an attempt to answer all of the increasing requirements, following are some of the recent technologies and trends prevalent in the industry: On site precast Onsite Precast is done in cases of precast elements which are not viable to be transported due to their dimensions or weight. On site precast requires a very lean and self sufficient on site setup and specific machineries. Mechanisation The industry is now moving towards automatic and adjustable moulds to cater to multiple project sites using the same resources, without delaying any project. Automatic moulds reduce labour requirement dramatically and can cut down production cycles by nearly 50 per cent. They are also flexible to accommodate different cross sections. Such changes can be done within a few minutes, owing to hydraulically operated adjustment mechanisms. n

AviGiri seeks to shed light on this matter, and inform fabricators, builders, and architects of the importance of using high-quality Microwave Cured EPDM Gaskets in their respective window systems. Many of the features that window manufacturers boast about such as: sound-proofing, temperature insulation, and energy efficiency are in fact directly related to the accurate fitment of the gaskets. So why then is there a trend to spend uncompromisingly on high quality aluminium or uPVC channels, the most advanced glass technology, and utilising the best accessories, while simultaneously maintaining a complete lack of interest in the quality of gaskets associated with the final product? This occurs not because of a deliberate avoidance of the quality of gaskets, but due to the wide variety of gaskets available in the market. A summary market-analysis will reveal that a fabricator may purchase gaskets from as low as ` 40 per Kg up to ` 250 per Kg. The question arises is which is the best? The key is to look into the manufacturing process involved and the standards that are maintained. This succinct article seeks to raise

52

awareness and build on a theoretical understanding of the differences caused due to the various manufacturing techniques of gaskets. How the gasket is cured will determine its tensile strength, durability, and ability to withstand temperature and ozone conditions. A quality gasket will not crack even after many years, which otherwise could be disastrous to the reputation of the window manufacturer. Imagine the warranty on a state-of-the-art window system being void because of the failure of the gasket!

Microwave-Cured EPDM Gaskets EPDM- Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer, is a synthetic rubber that was developed solely for outdoor application. Therefore, this has widely been accepted as the only form of rubber used in the construction industry. Only when the highest grade of EPDM is sourced, can the final product guarantee its quality. However, simply sourcing high quality EPDM will not suffice. Many chemicals are involved in the manufacturing process, and for these chemicals to interact in a desired manner depends on the manufacturing technique and the standards followed. The widely accepted gasket manufacturing standards are the DIN 7863 standard and the ASTM C864 – 05 standard. Adhering to these Standards automatically ensures that one receives a quality gasket product.

Simultaneously, there are two types of curing techniques: The conventional Steam-Cured (Autoclave) Technique and the more superior, Microwave Cured Technique. Microwave curing is done through a Continuous Vulcanisation Line, the advantages of which are: • No dimensional variations • No impurities due to use of fillers • Higher quality compound and raw material used. This manufacturing process along with following the above mentioned standards ensures that the gaskets have the following properties: • High resistance to ozone, weathering, and abrasion • Temperature resistance from -40 C to +140 C • Resistance to UV radiations. Only microwave cured EPDM can be guaranteed for a minimum of 10 years, promising: • No cracks • No discolouration • No loss in tensile strength. Porta cabins: a supporting industry to infrastructure Storage container These are type of porta cabins which are fully furnished and having toilet and small pantries to offer refreshments to staff and visitors. These containers are designed in such a way that one can lift and move them from one place to another in minutes. The size of 20’x8’, 40’x8’, and 40’x10’ are standard sizes keeping road safety norms in consideration.

I

n the last two decades India has seen a phenomenal increase in investment in the infrastructure sector, be it the infrastructure development sectors like power, road, metro/rail tunneling etc or developers linked projects from both public and private sector – from low cost housing to luxury villas. With newer technologies and time saving techniques of execution, we have been able to reduce the time and cost of construction. Here comes the need for pre-fabricated structures. Where the works on site are very limited and most of the process of fabrications is done before hand, in a factory or workshop to save time. Also quality can be maintained and the process can be standardised and well monitored.

Why porta cabins A very integral part of the same is site infrastructure. As for a greenfield project, one requires all facilities at site like office, accommodation, sanitation, storage etc. Going with the conventional techniques of brickwork and cement concrete the same might take at least 12-18 months for a typical

60

February 2015

power plant considering the usual time as 3-5 years for the entire project. Investing 20-30 per cent time in basic infrastructure can be quite lethal for the overall cost and tenure for the project. However, now with portable cabins Tinny Craft can execute the same in 2-3 months, saving a lot of valuable time. Also with product like ‘Container cabins’ one can immediately mobilise site activities from day 1. With their lift and shift arrangement that have been very handy for metro and road projects. Portable cabins and buildings are pre-fabricated in the company’s workshop, thus there is no involvement of brick, water, cement/sand etc on site making it very easy and quick to assemble on site. The biggest advantage lies in the fact that they can be easily dismantled giving space for other infra required on site with progress of project, and can be relocated to new location/ site as well requirement with negligible material loss. Thus a lot of cost is saved once it’s reused, making it very costeffective option in the long run.

The merits of portable cabins are not only restricted to a particular sector. There are portable cabins for schools and colleges, hospitals (pre-scanning areas, emergency units, OTs), resorts and hotels (using it from rooms, dining areas, party halls and even swimming pool enclosures), embassies and other corporate (for Office and marketing office and even as sample flats by builders). Also with the ‘Clean India movement’ the importance of portable toilets had increased manifold which are easy to use and transport to various locations. The guard cabins is a product which is for the retail segment with most houses and offices using it to provide facilities to the security-man hired. The products are made at Tinny Craft with light-weight panels for walls and roof. The same requires no pre sanctioning by local authorities (but should be checked up before concluding). It makes it viable for roof top construction, farm houses. It is recommended for hilly regions and places prone to earthquakes too. n Authored by-

PV roof shingles: the smartest investment Solar shingles, also called photovoltaic shingles, are the new ‘green’ roofing products

A

lot is expected of the construction roof these days, than just give shelter. The roof tells a lot about the people living in the building it houses. All the factors that go into the making of the roof i.e. the colour, surface texture and the materials used to cover the roof create an impression on those looking at the building for the first time. Finally, it becomes imperative that the shape of the roof must conform to the structure of the building it covers, in a way that it sustains the activities that take place in the building. PV’s are increasingly being incorporated into the construction of new buildings as a principal or ancillary source of electrical power, although existing buildings may be retrofitted with similar technology. The advantage

62

of integrated PV over more common non-integrated systems is that the initial cost can be offset by reducing the amount spent on building materials and manpower that would normally be used in construction.

like regular tiles, they blend into the roof without resulting in any aesthetic disruption of the overall appearance of the building.

About PV Shingles It is a very smart investment a home owner can make! Unlike regular solar panels, solar power roof shingles look just like regular roof (asphalt) shingles. But the secret ingredient is that they contain a special photovoltaic (PV) substance in the form of a thin film on the top.

Solar shingles should be installed by certified and authorised roofing contractors. In addition to a more attractive, lush look these products achieve, they have passed the standard safety, durability, and performance tests. While effectiveness and cost benefits vary widely, and power companies are beginning to balk over the concept of net metering buy-back power arrangements.

The PV film allows solar power roof shingles to transform solar radiation (light) directly into electricity. Because solar power roof shingles look just

As solar technology continues to evolve; manufacturers, architects, builders, and other industry professionals will increasingly adopt the great benefits that solar technology has to offer. meteorological circumstances. Some larger cities will have a better rebate and savings program versus some rural areas. However, estimates say that the owner can realise energy savings up to 4 times over a period of 20 years for the money invested.

Advantages and benefits There are many advantages to using solar PV shingles in roofing systems. The aesthetics and building envelope performance of these can match that of existing building products and therefore hasten their adoption by building owners. Solar energy heals and prevents cancers with sunlight (research shows sunlight Vitamin D can kill tumours, and stop their growth) & cures several ailments & illness. Thus being more exposed to the sun means our human immune system works better to eliminate germs, virus. Hence solar power is essential for human beings to lead better lives. These systems can also provide substantial savings to the building or home owners from reduced power cost. Some advantages of installing PV shingles are mentioned below: l Provide protection, durability, and flexibility as ordinary asphalt shingles. l Aesthetically appealing, blending with standard roofs and normal home construction. l Replaces roofing material, additional shingles underneath become unnecessary.

64

B2B Purchase

February 2015

l Low installation costs. l Lightweight. l Many

factors influence the outcome of having a cool roof on a particular building and are affected by various factors including building type, load, season and climate zone. l Cool roofs can significantly reduce summer energy usage. A reasonable annual energy savings expectation for a typical low-rise retail or any other commercial building is only 10 per cent to 30 per cent of the electricity used for air conditioning. l It has been found that a reflective roof coating can lower interior temperature of a commercial or industrial building by 8-12 degrees C during the hottest 4 hours of a summer day. l Not only does it lower interior temperature but also helps reduce energy expenditures. It improves productivity at work, particularly in a non air-conditioned space, by creating a more comfortable work environment.

Installation aspects The PV shingles replaces ordinary architectural roofing materials. The overlapping modules protect the roof from rain and moisture in the same manner as any standard roofing materials would. For attachment, there is one roof penetration for each module via the use of a sealed insert. Wiring connections are made below the roof decking. Two key factors have been behind the success of solar shingles - aesthetics and relative ease in their installation. Bulky panels which hover above rooftops are considered difficult to install, in comparison to solar shingles. The lightweight of solar shingles is an added advantage. The commercially available solar shingles are available in sizes of 12 by 86 inches (300 by 2, 200 mm) and can be fitted directly on the roof. No major structural reinforcement is required for the installation of PV Shingles.

Features Each solar shingle module weighs about 10 pounds and can be easily

installed. The best part is that because of their deep, dark purplish colour they mingle seamlessly with the surrounding asphalt roof shingles, a major reason for their growing popularity. The PV Shingles produce power in the form of Direct Current (DC). An inverter converts this into Alternating Current (AC), since homes are designed for the latter. Thin-film PV cells are now doubling as rooftop shingles. Research by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) on thinfilm PV and a growing interest has led to integrating PV into this new building material that generates electricity using sunlight.

Design Solar shingles are PV cells designed to look like and integrate with conventional asphalt roof shingles. First commercially available in 2005, solar shingles were much more costly than traditional “bolt-on PV panels, and thus were used mainly by those going solar but maintaining a traditional roofline. More recently, solar shingles have become price-competitive with bolt-on panels, and are getting more popular accordingly. Eco-conscious home and building owners might find solar shingles particularly attractive when they are re-shingling since the solar shingles also double as functional, protective and weatherproof roof shingles in their own right. Conclusion Getting down to basics, if a roof needs to be replaced or patched after solar panels has been deployed and operational, the lost revenue to the owner can be substantial. Solar panels and cool roofs are a natural marriage of sustainable technologies. As solar technology continues to evolve; manufacturers, architects, builders, and other industry professionals will increasingly adopt the great benefits that solar technology has to offer. The performance of sustainable roof technology can be selectively optimised if it is integrated with a different, complementary sustainable roof technology. n

Auto defrosting function in heating mode When the ambient temperature becomes very low, frost forms in the outdoor unit. This hampers the heating. The auto defrosting functions stops the fan motors of both the indoor and outdoor units, thereby halting the heating mode to protect the AC. Heat mode The heat pump in the inverter AC has several advantages. Inverter technology helps save over 30 per cent of power consumed even in the heat mode. There is no heating filament here since the same air-conditioning cycle is being used in the heat mode. There is also no carbon

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ): an increasing concern I

ndoor Air Quality (IAQ) or indoor air pollution refers to the air quality within and around the buildings and premises used for residential, commercial or factory premises and its surroundings especially as it relates to the health and comfort of its occupants. IAQ can be affected by gases or any mass or energy stressor that can induce adverse health conditions. Ventilation, filtration and control of source are the primary ways to dilute contaminants for improvement of indoor air quality in most occupied premises. Residential units can further improve indoor air quality by routine cleaning of carpets and area rugs. Cleaning based on traffic, number of household members, pets, children and smokers usually help create framework guidance for IAQ improvement. Carpets and rugs act like an air filter and must be cleaned. Determination of IAQ involves the collection of air samples, monitoring human exposure to pollutants, collection of samples on building surfaces, and computer modelling of air flow inside buildings. IAQ is part of Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ), which includes IAQ as well as other psychological and physical aspects of life indoors (e.g., lighting, visual quality, acoustics, and thermal comfort).

Indoor air pollution Indoor air pollution in developing nations is the most deadly risk globally. A major source of indoor air pollution in developing countries is the burning of wood, charcoal, dung, or crop residue for heating and cooking. Estimates indicate approximately 2.2–2.5 million deaths occurring annually as a resultant to such high levels of exposure to particulate matter. Indoor air quality A way of quantitatively ensuring the IAQ is by the frequency of effective turnover

of inside air by replacing it with outside air. In gymnasiums, physiotherapy spaces and restaurants and dining areas, the ventilation should be sufficient to limit carbon dioxide to 1,500 ppm. Since carbon dioxide indoors comes from occupants and outdoor air, the adequacy of ventilation per occupant is indicated by the concentration indoors minus the concentration outdoors. The value of 615 ppm above the outdoor concentration indicates approximately 15 cubic feet per minute of outdoor air per adult occupant doing sedentary office work where outdoor air contains 385 ppm, the current global average atmospheric CO2 concentration. In classrooms, the requirements in the ASHRAE standard 62.1, ventilation for acceptable IAQ, would typically result in about 3 air changes per hour, depending on the occupant density. When outdoor air is polluted, then bringing in more outdoor air can actually worsen the overall quality of the indoor air and exacerbate some occupant symptoms related to outdoor air pollution. Generally, outdoor country air is better than indoor city air. Exhaust gas leakages can occur from furnace metal exhaust pipes that lead to the chimney when there are leaks in the pipe and the pipe gas flow area diameter has been reduced.

Moisture and humidity Moisture management and humidity control requires operating HVAC systems as designed. Moisture management and humidity control may conflict with efforts to try to optimise the operation to conserve energy. However, for most of the places where during the majority of hours of the year, outdoor air temperatures are cool enough that the air does not need further cooling to provide thermal comfort indoors. However, high humidity outdoors creates the need for careful attention to

Indoor air quality

humidity levels indoors. High humidities give rise to mould growth and moisture indoors is associated with a higher prevalence of occupant respiratory problems. Commercial buildings, and sometimes residential, are often kept under slightly positive air pressure relative to the outdoors to reduce infiltration. Limiting infiltration helps with moisture management and humidity control. n

Admixtures

Profile

Smart concrete with advanced admixtures A

dmixtures are the ingredients in concrete other than portland cement, water, and aggregate that is added to the mix immediately before or during mixing. Concrete producers use admixtures primarily to reduce the cost of concrete construction; to modify the properties of hardened concrete; to ensure the quality of concrete during mixing, transporting, placing, and curing; and to overcome certain emergencies during concrete operations. BASF offers its advanced products in the admixtures segment.

MasterGlenium SKY Innovations in admixture have resulted in the changeover of concrete industry from normal grade concrete (M20/M30) to now M80/M100 grade concretes. The complexities involved in a construction site are mainly ranging from maintaining workability to pumping long distances vertically or horizontally that requires special admixtures to perform. The Burj Khalifa stands witness to the innovative MasterGlenium SKY range of admixtures that was used to pump the high strength concrete to over 600 metres high. The worsening traffic conditions today in busy cities portray another challenge to the ready-mix and the concrete producing fraternity in maintaining the workability of concrete for over 3 to 4 hrs. MasterGlenium SKY range of admixtures not only maintains workability but also allows contractors to strip the formworks earlier because of the faster gain in strength. Mechanisation in the construction industry is the order of the day and it’s well understood that time is money. Today monolithic formwork, which has not only abolished the need for skilled carpenters but also enhanced the speed of construction and bringing down overall cost of the structure. The construction methods also call for special concrete that can adapt to such

changes and also enhance the speed of construction.

Smart Dynamic Concrete The Smart Dynamic Concrete (SDC) is the solution that fits the modular formwork construction. Some of the key features delivered by SDC is that it enables time savings as high as 20 per cent, reduction in man-power and equipment requirements and eliminates the need for repair or finishing, resulting in considerable savings in the overall project cost. Urbanisation have driven up the land cost in Metropolitan cities to the sky and therefore it is more viable for the cities to grow vertically than spread horizontally as there are lot of infrastructure to be set up is associated. In countries like Japan and US it is traditional to build tall structures which would require sleek columns to maximise the sellable area. The sleek columns therefore need to be made with ultra high strength concrete

with M80 or M100 and above grade of strengths. This trend has caught up in India too; where currently the world’s tallest residential complex is being built in Mumbai with M95 grade strength of columns. Technically, the water content in the concrete mix is very low, but special admixture such as MasterGlenium SKY 8800 Series, which is used in this particular case, is expected to not only help in strength, workability but also improve the productivity by making the mix non-sticky at the same time capable of pumping to a height of more than 400 metres. Admixtures therefore have become an inevitable ingredient in concrete today and it’s hard to imagine building the infrastructure for the country without admixtures. The concrete mix methodology also have changed from a volumetric batching (1:2:3 ratio) to weigh batching which ensure quality concrete. n

Inorganic pigments for coloured concrete safety barriers Pilot project makes roads safer and more attractive in Germany

C

oloured concrete safety barriers are ensuring safety on German roads – and enhancing their visual appeal, too. Instead of drab gray, three sections in green, ocher, red and yellow blend perfectly into the Baden-Wuerttemberg landscape. The liquid colours used for colouring the cast-in-situ concrete are based on the weather-stable inorganic pigments from specialty chemicals company LANXESS. The K 1060 in the Böblingen region of Germany connects the town of Renningen and its industrial areas to the general road network. Part of the regional road redevelopment agreed in November 2014 required providing protective measures at various points. Tenders were invited for cast-insitu concrete walls with the option of colouring these. “The companies commissioned agreed on coloured castin-situ concrete as the most sustainable solution to ensure the desired colour effect would not be impaired by unavoidable damage. The idea of using different colours for individual sections was also developed to make them blend into the surroundings more effectively,” said graduate engineer Andreas Klein, head of the highways department responsible at Böblingen district council, adding: “Gray concrete walls are also monotonous. Colour, on the other hand, breaks things up, can be easily adapted to the surroundings, attracts attention and truly raises spirits!” The three sections of the pilot project have a total length of around half a kilometer. The area that has been integrated into a landscaped embankment to support a cycle path is coloured with green Colortherm chromium oxide pigments. Orange Bayferrox iron oxide pigments were used for the opposite side of the road,

with the colour matched to the stone wall behind and creating a contrast to the abutment of a bridge. A red shade was selected by Renningen council for the section in front of the public works department that the employees of the civil engineering office look out on. The start and finish of this section of the concrete safety barrier were produced in yellow to enhance visibility. “This aids safety and also looks really stylish,” said Klein, “and the colour transitions are perfect.” The construction company that carried out the work was Dortmundbased VSB Infra GmbH & Co. KG, a national service provider for traffic areas and protective systems made of concrete. The company’s slipform paver used in Renningen applied concrete at a steady rate of 1.5 meters a minute. The coloured ready-mixed concrete for continuous casting was supplied to the site by TBR Frischbeton Stuttgart GmbH. The liquid colours used were manufactured by Harold Scholz GmbH & Co. KG, Recklinghausen, using Bayferrox and Colourtherm pigments. A total of 180 cubic meters of concrete were used for the pilot project. A truck mixer load of approximately eight cubic meters was sufficient for 20 to 25 meters of concrete safety barrier. Kay Petersen, Managing Director of VSB Infra, could also well imagine slipform gutters and curbs made of coloured castin-situ concrete as a design element for city centers. “This makes no difference to our slipform paver. Cleaning is only necessary for a planned abrupt colour change. It is not required for a gradual colour transition,” he added. visual impact and can separate different areas such as bus lanes, crossings and cycle paths clearly and durably, thus boosting safety. The design possibilities are virtually limitless – the environmentally safe Bayferrox and Colourtherm inorganic colour pigments from LANXESS are available in red, yellow, green, brown and black. A total of more than 100 different shades are available for a wide range of application areas. The pigments are cement- and alkali-resistant and completely weatherand light-stable. n For more details, visit www.bayferrox.com.

Kryton Buildmat: meeting the ever-changing needs

E

volution – It’s something that every industry strives for and, in fact, needs in order to maintain its significance as the world’s demands change at a rapid pace. The concrete waterproofing industry is no different. With structures becoming more complicated with longer lifecycles and expanding into areas that were not considered to be viable sites 20 years ago, waterproofing these structures in extreme environments is critical. Traditional systems such as lime and surkhi, coal tar, BrickCoba, kota stone or even polymers and membranes have not kept up with the rapidly changing construction needs. Architects, developers and engineers across the globe have been working towards using waterproofing solutions that are simple to apply, save on cost and time and can waterproof the structure for its lifecycle.

Krystol technology This is where Kryton’s award winning Krystol technology has worked for over four decades. It is unique in terms of not just its chemical properties, but also physical properties, believes the company. This technology uses water as a catalyst to create long, narrow crystals within the concrete itself. These crystals permanently fill the pores, capillaries and hairline cracks of the concrete mass,

76

and continue to grow throughout the concrete, reaching lengths of many inches over time. Once the concrete has cured, the crystalline chemicals sit dormant until another dose of water (such as through a new crack) causes the chemical reaction to begin again. The ability to reactivate in the presence of water gives Krystol-treated concrete the ability to ‘self-seal’. When cracks form due to curing shrinkage, settling, seismic activity, etc., water entering through them causes new crystals to form and grow, blocking and filling the cracks. This ability to self-seal can help to dramatically reduce the long-term maintenance and repair costs of a concrete structure.

Matching the needs The system matches the needs of the ever-changing industry by being economical, saving on time and providing ease of application. With a product range that stands true to its warrantee, Kryton provides solutions to both old and new constructions. Internationally present for over 40 years, Kryton has been excelling in the crystalline waterproofing industry and has been at the spearhead of change in the attitude towards waterproofing in

general. With its presence in more than 40 countries worldwide the company has helped create structures that today are synonymous with brilliant construction practices. Having started in 1995 in India, Kryton Buildmat Co. Pvt. Ltd. (Kryton India) is celebrating 20 years of building a waterproof India. With the first and only BIS certified crystalline manufacturing unit in India, the company prides itself in delivering customised solutions for technically complicated projects. Chembond offers new generation concrete for tall structures C hembond Chemicals Limited, keeping in mind, the needs of current industry and sensing the right kind of solutions for future, has come up with new generation concrete for tall structures with PCEs and future generation admixtures.

Concrete for tall structures • High performance concrete • Self compacting concrete • Shrinkage compensated concrete • Internally cured concrete • High strength concrete • Fibre reinforced concrete • Polymer modified concrete. Self compacting concrete: It is a highly flowable, yet stable concrete that can spread readily into place and fill the formwork without any consolidation and without undergoing any significant separation. It offers major benefits like reduction in construction time and cost, improved concrete quality in difficult placement conditions and better surface quality and also improvement in environmental loadings.

High performance concrete: It is a concrete meeting special combinations of performance and uniformity requirements, that cannot always be achieved routinely using conventional constituents and normal mixing, placing, and curing practices. It is beneficial due to: ease of placement, early age strength, long-term mechanical properties, permeability, density, heat of hydration, volume stability and long life in severe environments.

Why change to PCE and future generation admixtures The chemical structure of PCE allows for a greater degree of chemical modification than the older generation products, offering a range of performance that can be tailored to meet specific needs. Dual mechanism of electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance results in improved dispersion, mix lubrication and performance. It offers improvement in construction techniques.

Further, PCE is useful to have better performance with following factors: • Time limits • Increasing loads • Complicated structures • Environmental concerns • Complex mixes • Availability concerns. KEM SUPLAST SCC 30

dhesives and sealants used on glass facades and exterior walls of buildings are exposed to extreme environmental impacts. They must withstand heat, frost and UV radiation, as well as rain, aggressive salts and industrial emissions. The mechanical stresses are also substantial. Construction materials such as concrete, steel or glass deform quite differently in response to rising or falling temperatures, which results in surface tension and movement between the facade and supporting elements. Sealants are thus exposed to permanent mechanical stress for years – and no sealant can cope with this better than silicone sealants from WACKER.

at the construction site. At ZAK Glass Technology, WACKER is has presented a new silicone sealant specifically for on-site installation. WACKER SG 79 Structural Glazing is a one-component, neutral-curing silicone sealant that cures rapidly once it reacts with atmospheric moisture. “Fully cured, the sealant can be stretched by up to 500 per cent. This allows the product to compensate movement within a joint by up to 50 per cent of the gap width,” the company claims. WACKER SG 79 defies temperatures between –30 C and +80 C and is thus suitable for structural-glazing applications in various climate zones. The product cures virtually without odour and can be processed at temperatures ranging from 5 to 40 C.

WACKER SG 79 adheres excellently to all conventional building materials such as glass, steel, concrete or stone, even without a primer. WACKER WS for Curtain Walls The company has also showcased WACKER WS Weatherseal Superior, a weathering-resistant sealant. This is also a neutral-curing sealant. It was specifically developed for natural stone and does not stain stone or ceramic joint edges. Even without a primer, WACKER WS adheres to both porous and smooth materials, as well as plastics. The sealant cures within 30 minutes and is elastic, extremely robust and weathering- and UV resistant. The product is ideal for sealing and installing large curtain walls and elaborate panel structures. n

Kirloskar Brothers presents tamper proof kinetic air valve

W

ater conservation nowadays is becoming a serious challenge in India and across the globe. Pilferage of water by tampering the supply lines or by any other means results in huge water wastage and imposes a huge cost on water authorities and customers. Kinetic air valves are commonly found tampered by loosening or removing the cowl and by inserting a rod or other similar objects between the cowl and valve body. Once the valve is tampered with, water which is under high internal pressure in the pipeline gets released and starts leaking continuously. Water pilferage also takes place by removing high pressure air release nipple. In order to combat water theft, water wastage and water pilferage to have clean environment, Kirloskar Brothers Ltd. has innovated and launched its tamperproof kinetic air valve for water, sewage and effluent applications. These valves have been designed to offer reliable service over a long period of time. Kirloskar tamperproof kinetic air valve is available in 5 sizes: 50 mm, 80 mm, 100 mm, 150 mm and 200 mm.

Kinetic air valves Kinetic air valves are commonly used in self-venting and admitting air in water pipelines. The basic functions of kinetic air valves as below: •

To release air automatically when the pipeline is being filled (anti surge action) To close and remain closed automatically when the pipe is filled with water, so as to prevent loss of water To open and admit air automatically while the main is being emptied (anti vacuum action)

Kinetic air valves are commonly found tampered by: • By loosening or removing the cowl • By inserting a rod or other similar objects between the cowl and valve body • By removing the high pressure air release nipple. Once the air valve is tampered with, water which is under high internal pressure in the pipeline gets released and starts leaking continuously. It then no more functions as air valve i.e. antisurge and anti-vacuum. Hence besides continuous water leakage through air valves there is huge potential of rupture or collapse of pipelines and again leading to very large amount of water wastage. Further, other problems like pollution, contamination and arising diseases also could become a serious concern.

Kirloskar tamperproof kinetic air valve • Objective behind designing this completely tamperproof kinetic air valve was to eliminate the problem of tampering and to prevent water wastage at rising mains and distribution networks. • Tamperproof kinetic air valve is maintenance free. Hence there is no need for frequent repairs and replacements. The company claims that the valve helps save thousands of litres of water going waste every day per valve. Key features • Tamperproof design of cowl and bolting • Tamperproof high pressure nipple • Non-clogging and self-sealing design • Trouble free operation with zero maintenance • Reliable service for long period of time • 100 per cent tamperproof features and still conforming to all basic requirements of Indian Standard specifications IS 14845. Thus Kirloskar tamperproof kinetic air valve leads to larger benefit of the society and serves to help cause of water conservation and to keep environment clean and pollution free. Thus it is a step towards prevention of water leakage, wastage and to address sustainability. n

economic course. Under the slogan of “Make in India”, India will promote the modernisation of India’s factories and infrastructure and encourage greater foreign investment in India with the objective to increase India’s share of global FDI. After 2006, this is the second time India has been designated as a partner country at the Hannover fair. During the show, Ministry of Commerce will showcase around 250 Indian companies. Along with EEPC, CII is also mandated to organize a high level participation from the country. The focus of the fair is to bring together expertise from two different countries and encourage collaborations in order to increase the Indo-German trade relations. The participants at the fair will receive a firsthand view of technological advancements in the field of engineering. Considering that India’s participation in the fair in 2006

generated total business to the tune of US $ 1.3 billion, striking several major deals including joint ventures between Mann Age and Force Motors, Deutsche Bann and Indian Railways, the fair can also be expected to draw significant attention in related sectors across India. During the roadshow, EEPC, under the aegis of the Ministry of Commerce announced a subsidy for the participating members to put up their exhibiting stalls in Hannover Messe 2015 and on the manufacturing goods shipment as well. The roadshow was organised in the presence of Michael Sibert, Consul General, German Consulate; T. S. Bhasin, Sr. Vice Chairman, EEPC India; Mehul Shah, Managing Director, Hannover Milano Fairs India Pvt. Ltd.; Bernard Steinruecke, Director General, Indo German Chambers of Commerce; and Aman Chadha, Chairman Committee on Trade with West Europe, EEPC India. n
