Low supplier visibility becoming a danger L&T Supplier (in)visibility and similarly for logistics providers from remote areas involving transhipments is a risk as the visibility is low.
- Satish Palekar, Vice President and Head Procurement and Supply Chain Management, Larsen & Toubro Ltd.
is a technology, engineering, construction and manufacturing company. It is one of the largest and most respected companies in India’s private sector. Satish Palekar gives an overview of the project procurement status and L&T’s logistic supply chain.
Todays’ challenges The challenges the procurement community faces are three fold: • How to meet the budgeted spend requirements • How to be better than the market • How to be better than competition Cost overruns (vs. ability to hold costs even with rising cost of raw material and energy costs), delays, schedule mismatch in procurement and construction planning, unclear titles or ROW, technology selection, compliance, forex variations, logistical issues, unavailability of financing are the basic challenges that affect the procurement. If one has to detail out the same, we can categorise in the following aspects: • Bidding phase challenges: By default, the projects are under competitive bidding (L1). Clients are getting increasingly educated which leads to higher expectation on many areas such as health, safety environment (HSE) and associated costs. Usually these specifications are upgraded but cost estimates are not. Increasing dilution can be observed in differentiation between A category and C category contractors, even for complex projects. Many of the smaller players do not foresee risks and end up quoting low, bag contracts and many ultimately end up defaulting. Nevertheless Cat A companies lose the projects. Consequently this leads
to a vicious cycle of cost cutting. Invariably this has a cascading impact – dependence on less than quality sub suppliers (who also get qualified) and the resultant impact on the performance be it cost / delivery / quality. Delay in project finalisation – for a given end date, leads to squeeze on available time to ordering. Procurement being the major costs area usually suffers in the budgets and end up with fewer options to choose. • Execution challenges: In large infrastructure projects, procurement is heavily dependent on the predecessors, viz. engineering of the project. Engineering in turn is dependent heavily on client inputs and the document approval cycle. Where there is a mismatch in appreciation of clients’ expectation, the turnaround times for the approval increase and delivery squeeze on procurement is faced. Approved vendor lists, which are normally not updated, limit buying power. Procurement strategies need to be constantly varied – they have a short shelf life. With increasing commoditisation (which is forced by reducing differentiation) have low shelf life. Reduced deliveries bring in compulsory concurrent EPC – the ordering therefore can be extremely risk prone as ordering without due diligence leads to surplus quantity risks. Many companies that offer complex products have consolidated with M&As. Managing these relationships is a challenge itself. Many times execution is at multiple locations leading to complex interfaces and time delays. Claims and disputes 18

management is another risk. Putting appropriate gates and processes is intrinsic to successful procurement.
Potential sourcing areas “With lot of development happening in East Europe and South East Asia, our focus is on relatively lower cost countries including Malaysia, Korea and China,” says Mr Palekar. “Steel is from Korea and value addition such as rolling is from Korea/Malaysia/India. Indian mills are also getting more competitive.” There are number of FTAs that India has with many of these nations, which help source better.
Present logistics Logistics embodies the six entities: roads, rail, ports, airports, telecommunication and electricity. The logistics network is in favour of roads thanks to the steep costs of rail freight. While the last mile connectivity is an issue, despite the increase in rural connectivity by state highways the quality of roads leave much to be desired. Congestion at several spots reduces the speed. Thanks to the GST not being operational we have myriad octroi nakas and series of local taxes. Ports are congested as compared to Singapore and inadequate for the growth potential it sees. Several large items are best shipped by barges. However, lack of a ring of ports and with only a few tugs and dumb barges that they haul, India is extensively dependent on Singapore and Middle East. “The license raj is still not out as stated earlier and with excise and customs operating without significant synergies there has been even contradicting documentation issues,” adds Mr Palekar. PPP is a credible solution to this malady. However, it is mired with controversy – thanks more to the policy paralysis and government not wanting to let go its rights and revenues. Power has always been a mirage – our
consumption and growth appetite years for more but very projects see a financial closure. Stores / warehouses for convenient stocking is another entity. In our type of industry, we have these primarily at the point of usage. Intermediate warehouses are primarily for holding the machinery in transit till use.
L&T logistics supply chain “For L&T, logistics supply chain is very effective. We have our own yards. We have tied up with major trusted logistics providers and networks,” informs Mr Palekar. For L&T, majority of its manufacturing facilities are on the coastal areas. They are designed for load out on barges. For input it has to utilise the main ports such as Mumbai, Katupalli etc. For road transport, it is strongly tied up with long-term agreements with a good logistics and network management. Its suppliers are geographically diverse with multilocational sources. It allows the company alternates for longer duration projects – albeit with time impact in the event of a local disruption. Hence its technical bid analysis is with more than one vendor. “Supplier (in)visibility and similarly for logistics providers from remote areas involving transhipments is a risk as the visibility is low,” alerts Mr Palekar. “Visibility of logistics status (track and trace) is deemed vital to performance. SAP is also connected to a logistics tracking module wherein PO wise tracking of material movement is achieved.”
e-Procurement technology “We are onto ARIBA selectively,” informs Mr Palekar. “Logistics and several items such as piping/flanges/fittings are commoditised post technical bid analysis and after a first set of cost calibration are turned onto ARIBA for final close out.” To ensure fairness and neutrality, it is ensuring that the same is conducted by
an independent team with an external observer. The performance is seen against transfer price and last best price from three years and cost trends against the commodity price movements. Costs are managed by utilising the Producers Price Index and developing one’s own Supplier Price Index. It is vital to seek out cartelisation and such metrics assist the company to assess the same. ARIBA is also useful for supplier and best cost discovery.
Spend management “Given the multi-locational organisation such as ours, software is nonnegotiable to us,” says Mr Palekar. “As an organisation we are wedded to SAP for our transaction management. This covers the materials management module as well as the finance module. Since we are project based company, we had to actually customise SAP to our needs.” Ineffective cost management and lack of financial transparency would lead to poor project performance. L&T has automated cost capture, invoicing and pay-outs, capturing costs against a micro cost breakdown structure, capturing the LOI costs (even nonbudgeted project expenditure), but reconciling the budgets on a monthly basis in SAP to capture the commitment, variance analysis and category wise spends. “We always have governance by segregating the purchase requisition and stores receipt by others. However the supplier payments are only after the gates are closed by our yard / stores,” adds Mr Palekar. Moreover, inventory management is actively pursued in the company. Material is mapped against engineering drawing and drawn as needed. This gives an adequate handle on the WIP and hence contingency management. Engineering software such as PDMS is therefore linked with inventory that is monitored in SAP. n

Welding
Focus on automation as a growth driver A
s far as welding products for construction and infrastructure space is concerned, India is considered as one of the most potential markets for welding products. Nimesh Chinoy senses use of automation in near future in welding industry.
The scale at which things have to move, welding automation will be the area of focus for future growth. - Nimesh Chinoy, Marketing Director, SigmaWeld
A lot of hopes India as a market space has great potential. New single party government elected has a clear mandate on growth. Project of 100 smart cities has been announced and ‘Make in India’ movement has also been initiated. All this will require infrastructure in place, which means this first order of business starts with construction and infrastructure. Automation will be the future The government wants to make India a manufacturing hub and the manufacturing output is on rise for the past few months. Welding business is directly proportional to the steel production and usage. As India gears up to be the next manufacturing hub, it will need more infrastructure, construction equipment, PEBs, power plants and automobiles which in turn will consume more steel, thereby more welding products will be required. “The scale at which things have to move, welding automation will be the area of focus for future growth,” says Mr Chinoy. Current market trends Talking about the current market trends, Mr Chinoy said, “At present supply is more than demand, therefore very heavy margin drops are seen in order to maintain the market share and presence,” says Mr Chinoy. “Hence we have undertaken inventory management and reduction programme keeping current demand in mind. Also we have used this opportunity to redesign, develop and upgrade our machines to meet future needs.”
SigmaWeld style At SigmaWeld, the sales, planning and procurement teams work together to ensure lean performance. It has custombuild software which helps link sales, manufacturing and procurement activities. It ensures timely deliveries to its customers without need of overstocking at out end. The company also conducts energy audits and makes sure that application specific requirements are met by customisation whenever needed. “We work in 360 degree view, with our customers and vendors. We have our annual plans draw out with the customers and share the same with all stakeholders in the beginning of the year itself,” informs Mr Chinoy. “This helps both us and vendors to better manage our supply chain and keep a healthy relation. Quarterly reviews help the ball rolling in the right direction.”
Major points for customer Before choosing welding solution, customer should consider some points/ questions to make a correct choice: • Availability of service and spares round the clock • How much energy the welding product is going to consume? • What kind of duty cycle (how long can it be run over a 10 min cycle) does the application demand? • What kind of technology is being used (inverter, thyristor, transformer) and what kind would actually suit the requirement of the job to be welded? • Choice of welding cable (aluminium, copper) and its appropriate size can help reduce running costs and increase efficiency of the welding power sources drastically, which is something customer should not forget. n

Need adequate sourcing hubs T
It is important that spare parts selling or distributing centres are opened in more places in each state to improve logistics.
- M R Sampath, Purchase Head, RNS Infrastructure Ltd.
oday RNS Group has diverse interests in construction, properties, automobiles, manufacture, power, hospitality and education. M R Sampath analyses the current situation and expects the same to be better.
Nothing like position Talking about India’s position in terms of strategic procurements for infrastructure purchase, Mr Sampath strongly says, “India does not have such a position.” He adds, “In certain areas, there are 3 or 4 manufacturers or suppliers of quality and reliable equipment especially in aggregate preparation plant and road machinery. Crawler cranes and tower cranes are also well represented. Batching plant has 2 or 3 manufacturers of repute. However, most of the others are mostly copying existing designs and some are supplying concrete batching plant with imported mixers.” Availability of spare parts for capital equipment remains a challenge. Commenting on this aspect, Mr Sampath says, “Supply of spare parts and providing proper after sales service is satisfactory only in the case of one or two important corporate firms. Others are below par.”
Need qualified workforce According to Mr Sampath, “A few firms do have good technical representatives to discuss merits of the equipment they offer. However, most of the other firms have only sales personnel to sell the equipment with very poor technical knowledge of the equipment they are selling. Sales engineers must be technically qualified to overcome this shortcoming.”
Need quality information Media plays a crucial role in disseminating knowledge-based information as far as modern technologies are concerned. However, Mr Sampath observes, “Publications catering to sourcing of construction equipment, etc. are not sufficiently informative.” He feels, manufacturers and suppliers of small equipment and spare parts and service providers should be adequately represented in relevant publications. Poor reach Most companies manufacturing and selling construction equipment have one central source for handling and supplying spare parts. “It is important that spare parts selling or distributing centres are opened in more places in each state to improve logistics. Hospet in Karnataka is now sourcing spare parts for all over Karnataka. Even Bangalore is not represented adequately,” Mr Sampath said. There is a tendency to use own vehicles to meet transport requirements. Also, lot more dependence can be observed on private transporters who have quick transit service facilities. “Certain formal requirements regarding sales tax, octrai etc. are irritants and come in the way of fast and smooth logistics,” Mr Sampath comments.
Communication with suppliers Adequate e-Procurement technology is desirable only with construction firms having all India activities, involving mega projects. Software is used for assessing cost of spares, life of spares etc. and this information helps in future tenders for construction projects. n

Establish adaptable procurement sector T
We need to establish procurement as a discipline that is capable of adapting readily to an ever changing world
- Rohinish Shah, Manager Indirect Procurement, Technip India Ltd.
echnip’s business activities serve many sectors of the energy industry worldwide, but in particular the oil and gas sector. Rohinish Shah shares his views on changing trends in procurement area.
Procurement types There are two types of procurement: Direct procurement and indirect procurement. Indirect procurement actually plays very key role from the spend management point of view. “From engineering or project point of view, materials whatever we are going to procure get delivered to the sites for the vendor. But indirect procurement like IT, housekeeping, other facilities etc. are provided from our profit centre as we are incurring that cost, ” explains Mr Shah. To deal with current challenges Procurement area is definitely facing some serious challenges today. Mentioning those ones, Mr Shah enlists some of the steps need to be taken to answer these current challenges as: • The setting of clear objectives at the outset of all projects and for all strategic procurement units • Development of a procurement strategy for every public sector organisation • Focusing strategic procurement on outcomes, not processes • Embracing collaboration as a strategic tool • Recognising that sustainability has become a strategic driver for professional procurement • Positioning the public sector as a customer of choice • Resolving the talent scarcity problem. “Meeting the challenges will enable procurement to take its place as
strategic management function within public sector agencies. We need to establish procurement as a discipline that is capable of adapting readily to an ever changing world,” says Mr Shah. “We need to build teams, skills and processes that enable us to develop a community of procurement professionals who can do all of the above while still delivering best value for money from individual procurements.”
Logistics facility and supply chain In today’s increasingly turbulent commercial world, achieving an efficient and effective supply network is central to business success. The world we live in depends on logistics and supply chain managers to make products available to us. These managers are the ultimate back-room power players moving millions of dollars of product every day. “Logistics and supply chain managers are the air traffic controllers of the global market and can give a company the advantage it needs to surge ahead of its competition,” points out Mr Shah. “If any part of the supply network fails, then a business can find itself with a big problem.” As warehousing facilities are getting reduced now, there is issue of inadequate warehouses as well. One needs to pay high rent for warehouse in addition to its maintenance cost. In such cases, sharing the warehouse with some other company having same kind of products could be an option to consider. Logistics supply chain consists of activities such as market research, requirements planning, make-orbuy decisions, supplier management, ordering, and order controlling. The targets in procurement logistics might

be contradictory: maximising efficiency by concentrating on core competence, outsourcing while maintaining the autonomy of the company, or minimising procurement costs while maximising security within the supply process.
e-Procurement era “Over the last decade e-Procurement has emerged as a major component in the supply chain management field. At its most basic level, e-Procurement has changed the ways businesses purchase goods,” says Mr Shah. “At a strategic level it is anticipated that e-Procurement will free purchasing resources from transaction processes to strategic sourcing activities.” In many commercial organisations the business case for e-Procurement is predicated on being able to deliver a variety of benefits, which include: lower prices, lower transactional costs, better compliance and speedier processing and delivery. How the performance of
a purchasing department can improve remains uncertain. However, recent research has questioned whether e-Procurement is really an ugly duckling? In one of the first empirical studies, Carr and Pearson (1999) confirmed that strategic purchasing has positive effect on company’s financial performance. Encouragingly, firms that do long-term planning and consider purchasing to be strategic are also likely to build long-term cooperative relationships with their key suppliers. “Electronic commerce (e-commerce) tools provide the opportunity to enhance two elements of procurement process: communication and transaction aspects,” informs Mr Shah. “Surveys have confirmed that e-commerce tools and IT solutions have an influence on procurement related processes.” Surprisingly very few papers have considered the internal customer. An exception can be found in Croom
and Johnston (2003) who noted an increase in internal customer service levels, achieved as a result of cost reduction, process compliance and customer satisfaction. Some companies have created very close links with their suppliers, closer than just longterm cooperation. Companies have taken an interest in improving their suppliers’ performance by exchanging staff, providing the necessary training, tools, technologies and performance evaluation. The key roles in business relations provide two-way communication, cross-functional teams and larger purchasing power. These factors were analysed by Humphreys et al. (2004) who highlighted that supplier development is associated with buyersupplier performance improvement. Carr and Pearson (1999), reported links between supplier-buyer relationship and firm’s financial performance. According to their research results, firms may achieve competitive advantage from long-term relationships rather than merely short-term. n

Managing inventory: the biggest challenge for logistics manager Umang Realtech Pvt. Ltd. is a real estate Driving potential suppliers away by applying complex processes or complex requirements is counterproductive.
player catering to mid segment housing apartments in Delhi NCR and other parts of India. It strives for timely delivery of the finest ideas in real estate business while ensuring maximum return on customers’ investments. Mohammad Farook emphasises the need of being in action to achieve some positive results for procurement sector.
Being open India is leading its way in developing countries. However, Mr Farook feels, with the vision of our present PM to make India a developed nation, a lot has to be done to fulfil the requirements of infrastructure development need.
- Mohammad Farook, Senior ManagerPurchase, Umang Realtech Pvt. Ltd.
Price variations and production needs to be enhanced. “Competitive pricing needs to be encouraged with being open to the production of various kinds of materials. This would also help Indian manufacturers to compete with foreign competitors,” suggests Mr Farook. Need to be in action The need is to make sure that procurement continues to demand only those outcomes that suppliers are capable of providing. This does not prevent procurement professionals from encouraging the supply market to provide more. However, Mr Farook observes, procurement professionals need to acknowledge that building competitive markets requires competing suppliers. Driving potential suppliers away by applying complex processes or complex requirements is counterproductive. Some more observations by Mr Farook are as follows:
• Small businesses are not set up to deal with complexity. Yet, if small businesses do not get converted into large businesses, the required competitive markets will not be formed in the future • Compliance with standards, requirements and processes is important, and the way we measure the compliance of both staff and suppliers will influence their behaviours. A key factor in influencing their behaviour is the complexity and the cost of compliance. This internal conflict can be resolved by making compliance part of our culture • Need to establish procurement as a discipline that is capable of adapting readily to an ever changing world • Need to build teams, skills and processes that enable us to develop a community of procurement professionals who can do all of the above while still delivering best value for money from individual procurements.
Potential factors Single planning for design, supply and construction pulling demand is required and issuing the right work to the right people at the right time is also essential. Also digital design technologies are needed to support design, construction, integration and maintenance activities. Further, according to Mr Farook, below factors are necessary to implement for improved picture of procurement: • Systems integration through colocated project teams to coordinate the design, engineering, integration and delivery of a fully-functioning operational system

• Project and programme management focusing on critical path and supporting an integrated supply chain • Just-in-time logistics to coordinate the supply of materials and minimise inventories on site • Logistics centres managing the delivery of materials and consolidating everything needed for site assembly • Standardised products and data to shift design and construction to speciality vendors and contractors to ensure efficient configuration (modular and pre-assembly) and composition to minimise onsite labour effort.
Logistics and material management Logistics is evolved from material management and supply chain management has evolved from logistics. When we say logistics, broadly it covers: transport management, warehouse management, vendor management,
and inventory management. “The real challenge of logistics manager lies in managing the inventory. This inventory could be of either raw materials or of finished goods,” observes Mr Farook. Present logistics in India is not sufficient in order to achieve the proposed future vision by our PM. According to Mr Farook, “To make India a developed country we need dedicated freight corridors of roadways/ railways to be connected with ports. Common cities and towns need improvement in infrastructure.”
e-Procurement as a catalyst Talking about the e-Procurement technology the company uses, Mr Farook says, ”e-Procurement brings in transparency and efficiency. Currently we use E-tender technology which is performing well enough for us. Moreover we are using ERP system NET4U/ R construct to get visibility and control over all the expenditure happens in our company.”
Procurement Voice He further evaluates the performance of the said e-Procurement technique as he describes its major functions follows: • To act as the catalyst for procurement reform • To enhance transparency, monitoring and control in procurement process • To bring in economies of scale through aggregation of demand • To reduce cost of doing business for both purchaser and suppliers • To establish level playing field and fair competitive platform for the suppliers
Umang for future Umang Realtech believes that it boasts of an experienced and forward thinking management comprising of leading industry experts from Uppal and Indus Capital Partners. Umang wishes to continue to deliver efficient customer service maintaining a steady balance of quality and class across all its projects. n

Problem recognition: a psychological process MBL Infrastructures Ltd. is engaged From time to time, in response to changes in the market environment, marketers reposition products. Repositioning, however, is difficult to achieve effectively and is impossible to achieve overnight.

in the execution of civil engineering projects. The company provides integrated EPC services for civil construction and infrastructure sector projects. Subhendu Paul analyses India’s position on global platform and emphasises on problem recognition.
India at lower middle position When it comes to strategic procurement for infrastructure projects, currently India stands at lower middle on global platform. To describe the steps in the implementation of strategic procurement for infrastructure projects of merchandise plans many things like gathering information, selecting and interacting with merchandise sources, evaluation, negotiation, concluding, purchase, receiving and stocking merchandise, recording, and reevaluation. “From time to time, in response to changes in the market environment, marketers reposition products. Repositioning, however, is difficult to achieve effectively and is impossible to achieve overnight,” says Mr Paul. “The more we feel that it’s important to make the right decision and/or the risks associated with making the wrong decision, the more susceptible we are to such dissonance.” Mr Paul describes two important aspects in this regard. Total product concept: A product offers four types of benefits to varying
degrees: a basis core or functional set, an accessory ring of benefits that add value at no apparent additional charges, a psychological ring of feeling the experiences as a result of the possession or use of the product, and the time saved or lost from the use of the product. Importance of the purchase decision: High involvement, high risk purchases are much more likely to result in cognitive dissonance than low involvement, low risk purchase.
Problem recognition “Problem recognition is psychological processes through which we are evaluating the difference between our actual state and desired state,” points out Mr paul. “This is a comparison of our current need or benefits state with what we would like it to be. The greater the perceived distance between these two, more clearly the project recognises potential need.” Problem recognition can be influenced by a variety of projects, situational and marketing factors. These may operate singly or in combination to trigger problem recognition. These triggers are of interest to marketers of goods and services and are often part of the copy points included in promotional communications. When projects are seeking value, they consider the benefits provided by the product or service versus the

price. However, the price of an item purchased is not the only cost to the project making the purchase, external information search costs like costs of travel, time cost, decision delay costs, physical costs, psychological costs and last but not the least information overload costs. Mr Paul mentions some problems, in particular, for the procurement community as: • Low database of suppliers and non availability of products at time • Poor logistics system • Huge difference between demand and supply • India has world’s densest road network compared to USA and China but number of multilane highways is quite low. It causes inconveniences to transhipment of these items/ equipment • Airports are situated in most eroded areas. So, delay in shipments occurs • Rapid urbanisation in India is a challenge to sourcing construction

numbers. So there should be alternatives to ensure on time delivery.
Warehousing issue India warehousing sector is facing several challenges including the lack of sufficient physical infrastructure. It lags in devising and implementing strategies, having international warehousing standards. Also the supply-demand relation needs to be addressed in way to ensure on time of delivery.
Software assistance MBL Infrastructures Ltd. uses supplier portal techniques to take both price and commercial data. It also implements ERP. The evaluation of such techniques involves two objectives: • To report on the current state of play • To review and evaluate the contribution of the action plan to that progress and identity issues requiring attention and needs improvements.
Logistics SCM Effectiveness of logistics supply chain management depends upon various things. A good logistics SCM must figure out the best way to handle both increased demand for the current product offerings. It needs to use adequate metrics to measure performance levels.
Win discounts MBL mainly deals with petroleum products and its major suppliers are big companies like IOCL, HPCL, BPCL and Hincol. Thus it obviously becomes important to deal with them tactfully to have timely procurement.
Moreover, it has to maintain good communication with customers. Also it should ensure the capability and capacity to transport materials in a huge

Advantage open economy
Open economy policy of our country has definite advantages to the end users as there is availability of various brands meeting the new specifications at competitive prices, thus making procedure of procurement easy. - Dr Manish Samant, Vice President (Technical), FSH Welding India
Good demand for welding industry “By virtue of Indian populations, labour is cheap making India a hub for many export fabrication jobs besides internal infrastructure projects. Hence in near future there will be good demand for welding industry,” observes Dr Manish Samant. This factor would lead to job opportunities for skilled and unskilled labour, welding engineers. Opportunities and current trends Government policies with respective to infrastructure and open economy fortunately have positive impact on welding business and this will help to grow. As consumption of the steel and welding goes hand in hand, the demand for the steel, welding equipment, consumables, welding accessories etc. will improve and go up. Demand for new and innovative welding consumables, high tech equipment, robot, automation will also increase. Fabricators and manufacturers will invest in capital goods and infrastructure to enhance their capacity and competency. Overall, there will be a good business and job opportunities for Indians as well as overseas players. There is more and more demand for consumables. Moreover, the need of innovative or special consumables will be high over and above conventional consumables. Same is valid for the welding power source and accessories. “FSH Welding is getting benefited by these demands for special products,” informs Dr Samant.
Procurement-related activities “Open economy policy of our country has definite advantages to the end users as there is availability of various brands meeting the
new specifications at competitive prices, thus making procedure of procurement easy,” says Dr Samant.
FSH supply chain FSH welding is a France-based welding and brazing consumables manufacturer which market the consumables under brand name ‘Selectarc’ having two manufacturing units in France. It supplies products through its distributors as well as to end users. Procurement practice for welding consumables varies with the type of end user and location. So there is no fixed model for FSH. It also depends on the customers’ strategy in terms of finance, storage, location of consumable procurement, rate of consumption, transportation cost, consumable price, etc.
For customers “For equipment procurement, customer’s strategy is most important. They have to manage within their financial budget and maximum features at minimum cost i.e. value for money,” suggests Dr Samant. There are various strategies that customer have to adapt for the procurement of welding consumables. There are many constraints, like customer’s client recommendations for specific brands, specification over and above the conventional standards, consumables which are meeting specifications. Then, it comes to price, quantity and availability. Consumable requirements are basically of three types: components manufacturer (automobiles, White goods etc.), Project base and Maintenance & Repair. So procurement strategy changes with the requirements. n

Messer: a trendsetter in cutting technology
Our technology is atleast a decade ahead of competition. - Dr. A.V. Mohan, Executive Director (Sales & Marketing), Messer Cutting Systems India Pvt. Ltd.
China – then and now! Messer is providing cutting-edge cutting systems for more than 115 years. In India, the company made a humble beginning in 1998. Considering the demand of highquality, low-cost products in Indian market, Dr. A.V. Mohan decided to import machines from China and sell and service them. Though pricing was one major advantage, Messer had an edge because of highquality equipment. However, on those days, it was not an easy task to bring in any product from China and get an overnight acceptance in India. Chinese goods did not enjoy a good reputation then. “Nobody knew the potential of China and almost everyone advised me to drop the idea. However, my visit to China in 1998 was an eye opener for me. Today I feel proud to say that we sensed the potential on time and took the initiative,” Dr. Mohan recounts.
Fiber Blade
“We have a full-fledged manufacturing facility in Coimbatore which we built in anticipation that goods imported from China will not remain cheap forever and we were right. Now it’s our turn – India is the present and future.” His company sold Messer-make Chinese machines till 2008 -09 and scripted a success story which others followed post 2005. Today, Messer Cutting Systems India Pvt. Ltd. caters to over 1,000 Messer CNC machines in India.
Latest innovations in cutting systems “High definition oxygen plasma as an economical, highly productive and highquality process to cut carbon steel was the biggest innovation in the last decade,” believes Dr. Mohan. Messer has worked on all the thermal cutting processes like oxyfuel, plasma

and laser. The company has improved its application potential by innovating interactive CNC controllers, creating a powerful database which literally takes away skill requirement to operate such machines. Long life, low consumption gas equipment, in-built ignitors, in-built torch height controls are some of the unique features which are creating tremendous advantages to the customer today. “Our technology is atleast a decade ahead of competition,” Dr. Mohan claims.
Messer products and solutions Messer offers a range of standard oxyfuel products like regulators, flash back arrestors, gas cutting – welding torches, heating solutions, CNC oxyfuel, plasma, laser machines, fume extraction and plate handling systems. The company produces almost all the products locally. New launch Messer has recently launched its Terrablade series of CNC machines, powder cutting solutions for cutting high thickness SS plates, air heating nozzles for facilitating pressure vessel fabrication, high-end welding and cutting accessories etc. “Each of our product categories requires a different strategy and we are on a mission to excel in all of them,” informs Dr. Mohan. “At present we have more than 60 per cent market share.” Supply chain Messer’s supply chain is managed through a team of dedicated professionals based in its factory and regional locations in Mumbai and Faridabad. “Customer orientation is the major factor that drives every department in our organisation,” says Dr. Mohan. Procurement tips There are few crucial factors a customer must consider while procuring cutting systems. According to Dr. Mohan, “The key points would be to evaluate the technology, value for money, past record of the supplier, performance reports of existing customers, after-sales service network, ready stock spares availability, general behaviour, and attitude of the supplier.” n

Transportation of ODC: a major challenge T
A combination of politics, regulatory framework and economic slowdown has had a cascading effect on procurements.
- Abhaya Bhargava, VP, Corporate Sourcing, Thermax Ltd.
hermax India Ltd. is headquartered in Pune and operates globally through 19 International offices, 12 sales and service offices and 12 manufacturing facilities 7 of which are in India and 5 overseas. Having experience of over four decades in the energy sector, Thermax offers a range of boilers and thermal oil heaters, energy chillers and customised products like exhaust gas boilers. It also helps industries reduce energy costs by shifting to abundantly available, alternate energy such as biomass. Abhaya Bhargava analyses the nature of Indian strategic procurement and states achievements of Thermax in procurement field.
Indian strategic procurement India’s position in terms of strategic procurement for infrastructure projects depends on the sector being considered and the organisations executing the projects. For example, areas like ports, highways and railways have seen project delays disrupting procurement patterns. Here, there is definitely scope for improvement. However, there are also some sectors where procurements are more streamlined. Thermax makes use of all the levers of strategic procurement in a well planned manner. These include consolidation of buying, standardisation of packages and practices like reverse auctions conducted in a time bound way.
Major challenges Procurement community is currently facing some challenges. Out of which uncertain time schedules, highly stressed cash flows and cost pressures are the major ones. The issue of coal availability for power plants is illustrative. According to Mr Bhargava, “Developers, who have
signed power purchase agreements, in the absence of clear cut policy decisions and implementations, are forced to put the entire project procurement on hold.” He further points out, “A combination of politics, regulatory framework and economic slowdown has had a cascading effect on procurements. Cost pressures in the areas of labour, fuel and transport have added to the troubles of the procurement community.”
Transport and warehousing facilities need to improve There has been a definite improvement in the construction of roads and bridges. Still, transportation especially of ODC (over dimensional consignments) is a challenge in certain parts of the country. India still lacks adequate highways, roads and bridges. Though we have many rivers, our inland waterways are still not developed for freight movement. The limitations are especially severe in the East and North East. “Corrupt practices centred on ‘well meaning rules and regulations’ add to time delays and costs,” Mr Bhargava adds. Availability of vehicles for transport is a major factor needs to be taken care of. Also warehousing at project sites continues to be area of concern.
Electronic platform Thermax uses an electronic platform for reverse or forward auctions related to procurement of disposal of material and to avail services. Its entire procurement is carried out in an ERP environment. Also it uses business intelligence tools along with the functionality of MS Excel to analyse spend and develop better strategies for procurement. n

Negotiate, but maintain quality of service P
Negotiating for the best rates is important, but QoS (Quality of Service) is the critical factor.
- Dharmendra Punjani, Head Purchase, Relcon Infraprojects Ltd.
rocurement cutting across all industries has evolved particularly in the last decade. In any organisation today procurement holds as much importance as finance, HR, marketing or sales division. Dharmendra Punjani discusses about importance of maintaining QoS (Quality of Service) despite negotiating on prices.
FTI to help India Strategically India has always been looked as a procurement hub for the arms and defence companies worldwide. Post 1991 after opening its doors for FDI in this decade India is poised for a massive FTI (Foreign Technology Investment). This procurement of foreign technology combined with Indian manufactured hardware and software and the huge Indian human resource is sure to take India up to becoming a developed nation. “The process followed for procurement is more process oriented and refined to extract maximum benefits for the organisation thus contributing towards the overall financial net growth,” points out Mr Punjani.
Main challenges The word procurement is usually associated with ‘good bargaining’ or ‘better negotiating’ to get good pricing or ‘getting equipment/ material at the lowest cost’. However, procurement is not about all the above. “Negotiating for the best rates is important, but QoS is the critical factor,” says Mr Punjani. Here QoS is having vast meaning that includes ensuring delivery schedules are being
met, smooth logistics, paperwork and better warehousing facilities are being provided so that the quality of material supplied is not getting compromised. The emerging trend is to achieve better QoS coupled with competitive pricing. A timely supply at better rates is again a challenge presently. Therefore procurement community is in dire need of enough warehouses and efficient logistic facility. It needs fresh and realistic outlook from government. To address the issue of inadequate warehouses and logistics will require a lot of sustained efforts to get to the level desired for a smooth end to end transaction.
Logistics and e-Procurement The logistics supply chain has evolved over the years. Though there are some issues, the company is in the process of putting in the involved tasks for optimisation. Budget affects spend management Effective spend management starts with budgeting. Every project budgeted at the initial or planning stage leads to effective spending. Relcon Infraprojects also has understood the logic behind this fact and has incorporated effecting spending as a part of its project management. Inventory control The most important work done by Relcon is in the area of ‘inventory control’ i.e. minimum inventory or simply in time delivery. Delay in deliveries also lead to increase in overall project cost. Therefore, especially in procurement, the company works considering the fact: ‘A penny saved is a penny earned.’ n

Logistics cost affects overall competitiveness K
The comparatively high logistics cost in India can be attributed to factors such as a complicated tax regime, fragmented market structure and inadequate infrastructure.
NR Constructions Ltd. is an ISO 9001:2000 certified company. It is a multi-domain infrastructure project development company providing EPC services across various fast growing sectors namely roads and highways, irrigation and urban water infrastructure management. The company has now developed a significant and diversified presence across the construction and infrastructure domains in India. Naresh Nagubandi talks about the need to improve the current picture in procurement sector.
Need to improve The country’s strategic procurement for infrastructure projects, remains largely insufficient and ill-adapted to the needs of the economy. As per global ranking, India will get around 50th rank in strategic procurement.
- Naresh Nagubandi, Procurement Head, KNR Constructions Ltd.
“An effective procurement methodology is essential for the success of any project delivery process. Major infrastructure projects require detailed planning and robust value for money assessment of each procurement option available,” says Mr Nagubandi. “Several critical challenges are there in project procurement such as securing quality products or finding right supplier for some particular requirement.”
No particular platform Mr Nagubandi observes, “There is no particular platform for sourcing of construction equipment, building materials and power solutions. Though there are some mini players in the market, they are not up to the standard market level. However, there is a need of establishment of such specific platform for all these solutions.”
Logistics cost Logistics cost is an important factor that affects the competitiveness of nations as well as firms. However, this cost is considerably high in India and there are some factors responsible for the same. “The comparatively high logistics cost in India can be attributed to factors such as a complicated tax regime, fragmented market structure and inadequate infrastructure,” says Mr Nagubandi. “We are spending 40 per cent of the total project cost on logistics supply chain. However, still we are not using any software for procurement operations.” Procurement and supply management play important role for any business or organisation. More than 2/3rd of revenue can be spent on buying the company’s products or services, meaning the procurement can make a real difference in cost saving and profit.
Growth objectives Client satisfaction would continue to be the guiding principle of the company’s strategy for growth. The company intends to achieve its growth objectives by adopting the following strategies: • Maintain performance and competitiveness of existing business to capitalise on huge investments expected to be made in infrastructure development especially in segments where we presently operate • Focus on EPC projects in the infrastructure sector • Focus on projects involving higher degree of engineering skills • Leverage our business growth by identifying and forming strategic joint venture relationships for mutual benefit through sharing of resources and business skills. n

hmedabad-based Astral Poly Technic is a name that symbolises CPVC plumbing systems for both residential and industrial application. Kairav Engineer shares his view on the piping industry and how Astral Poly Technic is leaving its mark, especially in the plumbing sector.
What is the current status of the pipe industry? Is it growing or stagnant? The pipe industry is growing; however, due to recent slowdown in the real estate market, the growth has slowed down, but it is still growing in a positive way. The pipe industry was growing at about 20 per cent, but now it is declined to 10 to 12 per cent.
CPVC compound that will give 25 per cent more pressure rating at higher temperature compared to normal CPVC pipes. We are the first company to introduce CPVC polymer in India in 1999. We also have aluminium CPVC composite pipes called bendable pipes which are good for solar line downtek. Our downtek lines are really high temperature and high pressure so these pipes give composite of plastic and the strength of metal. Recently, we have also launched fire-sprinkler pipes named BlazeMaster pipes which are ISI approved. These pipes are used in fire sprinkler lines in commercial, residential, hotels and hospital projects.
How will the industry grow in the coming years? As of now, there will be a slowdown till March ’15. We are hoping for things to take positive turn after the next year’s Annual Budget as several areas of real estate market are gearing up.
Do you face any challenges catering to the products from low cost segments? No. We have about 15 products. For the low cost segments, we have the PVC pipes and agricultural pipes. For high-end segments, we have FlowGuard Plus. So we have a product portfolio, ranging from high-end segments to low-end segment.
What are the innovative products you have in your products portfolio? We are the market leader in CPVC pipes for hot and cold water. In that we have recently launched a new product named FlowGuard Plus, which is a higher grade
Any future investment plans? We usually do the routine capex, and we plough back whatever internal cash approval into the business. Every year, we plough back about ` 60 to 70 crore for the growth. n

Reliability: the key factor in procuring pumps G
Earlier the pumps and valves used to be procured purely on cost basis. But today reliability is one of the key factors -Ajit Singh, Head- Water Treatment OEM, Grundfos Pumps India Pvt. Ltd
rundfos India recently launched the new range of BMS Pumps used in water treatment. Identifying the need that sustainable water treatment solutions require the pumping solution to be durable, cost effective and offering trouble-free operation, the simple design and durable components of these pumps eliminate costly downtime. Ajit Singh talks about this pump highlighting the marketing strategy.
Could you update us on the recent status of pumps and valves market in India? With respect to the water treatment segment, in Grundfos we are growing by more than 15 per cent this year. We see a lot of potential in this particular segment because of opening of new avenues. Also the government is initiating efforts for cleaning of rivers like Ganges. It is not possible to take out the entire water from the Ganges and clean it. Rather we need to reduce discharge of polluted water from industry in the water bodies. So, more and more water has to be reused in the industry. These will increase the demand for ETP recycling as well as zero liquid discharge plants. On the other hand the government plans to provide clean drinking water to the rural areas. They are also putting RO units in villages which are at subsidised rates. Whatever govt efforts you mentioned, are all in the planning stage. What is the exact situation on the ground level? The government is putting a lot of thrust and some strict regulations formulated by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) do exist and that has already started to show results on the ground. However
further strict implementation of such regulations is required to have a greater impact.
How are you going to be a part of these initiatives? Industries are one of the major areas where effluents are being generated and discharged out either in rivers or some other water bodies. To keep Ganges clean, a lot of industries will have to control their effluent discharge. They may reuse the water or have a complete zero liquid discharge plants. A lot of pumps of varied capacity and pressure-handling will be required. Our contribution will be in supplying these kinds of pumps. Grundfos is known for its energy efficient pumps. Our new range of BMS pumps used in water treatment will be added for this purpose. These pumps are much lighter in weight and have an improved efficiency of around 4-5 per cent.
How are you going to place this product in the market? BMS Pumps for high pressure applications upto 82 bar in reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration plants. These pumps can be used in desalinisation, ETP recycle and zero liquid discharge plants. Compared to the earlier generation of high pressure pumps from Grundfos, the new range of BMS pumps is much simpler to maintain. These pumps are much lighter in weight because we are using our permanent magnet motor technology. Also, it becomes much easier for customers to handle these pumps at sites when installing the pumps. We use the highspeed technology and run the motors at around 5,000 rpm.

Application of Grundfos BMS pumps • Reverse osmosis system • Ultra filtration system • Filtration system • Pressure boosting systems and water supply.
What about the pricing of this pump? The new range of BMS pumps are lightweight ultra-filtration booster module. These may end up replacing two pumps in the system. Also it is a system solution involving pump, motor and VFD along with the Control Panel. So, if we look at the advantages and efficiency and the life cycle cost, this solution is comparatively cost-efficient. How do you look at the current
trends in procurement as far as pumps and valves are concerned? Traditionally, procurement is all about looking at people as buyers and suppliers. But there has always been of talk about entering into partnerships. Procurement persons are now looking into people who can contribute not only in being competitive but also helping them in being efficient in entire process of procurement, delivery or after-sales service. Most important thing is how we are able to optimise the costing for
Pumps
them. It is about looking into different areas within our portfolio and what can be offered to them. It is best suited in terms of technical requirement as well as cost effectiveness. More and more companies are looking at this aspect because at the end of the day there are people in the market who can supply. It is about how you are going to add value. Training is also an important aspect – people are looking at suppliers to train them on newly hired manpower.
What are the points a customer must consider while procuring pumps and valves for water treatment? Technical requirement is the first and foremost. Earlier the pumps and valves used to be procured purely on cost basis. But today reliability is one of the key factors. An OEM has to support its customers in terms after-sales service for reliable operations and maintenance of the equipment. n

Being a water treatment partner WABAG is one of the world’s leading We undertake recycle projects and also have capabilities in zero liquid discharge technology which help industries to reduce use of fresh water to the possible extent.
- Himanshu Laghate, Head Procurement and expediting (IWG), VA Tech Wabag Ltd.
suppliers of drinking water and wastewater plant planning, installation and operational management. It offers sustainable solutions that can serve as the economic basis for a region and provide enhanced quality of life for the local population. Himanshu Laghate explains current trends and new technology adoptions.
To meet environment regulations The increasing need for recycle and reuse of water is very well known. Though the environmental norms are getting stricter in India, there is still a lot more desired. Many industries have realised that they can no longer depend on fresh water and have implemented plants which recycle and reuse the water to the maximum extent. Some oil refining companies are doing very well in this. Wabag provides effluent recycle solutions to industries and has done so for many industries so far. The company undertakes recycle projects and also have capabilities in zero liquid discharge technology which help industries to reduce use of fresh water to the possible extent. Building awareness There is a lot of awareness now about use of water, wastage of water and that this source also has supply side limitations as compared to demand. This is due to various reasons like population growth, industrial demand, agricultural need to keep up with increased population etc. However, Mr Laghate feels, “Cost and availability of fresh water are factors which are influencing the market. There are various solutions which are now being taken into consideration like using treated sewage for agricultural use, treatment of municipal sewage and
supply to industries like power, steel etc.”
Solutions offered Wabag offers solutions in effluent or sewage treatment, large drinking water solutions to municipal corporations and governing bodies, various process water solutions to different industries and also undertakes O&M of plants. One of the large desalination plants which fulfils need of Chennai is set up by VA Tech Wabag. Current trends The current trend in procurement for water treatment is to have a water treatment solutions partner who can provide all types of solutions and also can offer end to end solutions including design, supply, BOT, BOOT and O&M. The focus is to have a long term sustainable organisation which means there is a trusted partner with the customer. The trends are also to adopt new technology which is a need of the hour like reverse osmosis has taken centre stage while it was not so a decade ago.

Tough competition affecting ‘rate versus quality’ V
The tough competition in local level procurement is having its direct and significant impact on ‘rate versus quality’ proportion.
enkateshwara Realty is a young and dynamic organisation committed to making a true difference to the skyline of Pune. It has offerings in both residential and commercial fields. Despite some major present challenges, Praveen Pujari expects the picture to change soon and emphasises on importance of having a good procurement team for fast and productive results.
‘Achhe din’ around the corner It has been seen that India has always remained dependent on other countries for branded or technologically advanced products in many fields including construction. Time has come to become self sufficient on this front which will help building a great amount of confidence in industry.
- Praveen Pujari, Project Manager, Venkateshwara Realty
“The tough competition in local level procurement is having its direct and significant impact on ‘rate versus quality’ proportion,” observes Mr Pujari. “Indian government should seriously think about this currency diversion as it is ultimately affecting on rising market prices.” However, looking at the improvements being done in strategic procurement sector, it can be said that India is capable to make its mark on global map. Of course, some steps are being taken from government side now to boost overall industrial sector in order to bring up ‘achhe din’ building a better India.
Challenges The burden of lot of taxes on basic material prices is directly affecting transportation as it takes more time to get delivered. Such delay in
transportation causes overall delay in completion of projects which is undesirable. Even some labour issues at local level at times create problems when it comes to unloading of materials. Moreover, the unpredicted system of octrai, toll, LBT etc. add more to the series.
Good team, good results “For any company in construction sector, it is always essential to have an efficient team to get desired results,” points out Mr Pujari. “As the procurement department is responsible for taking decisions regarding the materials to be used, it has to be experienced enough and friendly with the changing times and technology.” Keeping an eye on long-term objectives, the company believes in having formation of fully capable team in order to deliver reliable, durable and timely results with quality. Presently it is in search of quality vendors of products in doors, UPVC windows, tiles, Italian marbles, carpentry work, sludge plumbing and electrical work. Venkateshwara Realty does not use any e-Procurement facility today. However, it uses specific software systems for internal operations especially to keep a track on spending in procurement area.
Venkateshwara way Venkateshwara Realty’s focus will continue to be the creation of landmark, premium real estate developments that add distinct quality, value and comfort to its customers’ lives. It has drawn up an aggressive roadmap for growth and also has a number of premium projects lined up in the coming months. n

Rapid construction techniques in need T
Construction technology for affordable housing is a challenge. We need rapid construction technologies at traditional construction prices, given the current market situation.
- Rohit Poddar, Managing Director, Poddar Developers
he Poddar Group is focusing on the value housing segments in Mumbai, within the MMRDA region. It aims to actively expand into other markets in the near future. Rohit Poddar gives an edge to big players as they are likely to get benefitted more with new smart city projects offered by government.
Advantage big players A marked improvement in business sentiment has been observed since Narendra Modi became PM, in addition to an almost 50 per cent increase in the BSE stock market indices. The GDP has grown at 5.7 per cent in Q1 of this financial year and WPI was reported at sub 4 per cent. However, this euphoria is yet to translate into significantly higher absorption rates across all major markets in India. There remains large unsold inventory in the luxury space across all metros and in Mumbai there is an estimated 4 years of stock. According to Mr Poddar, “The only area where there is buoyancy is in the affordable housing space, and this is due to shortage of this format. And even in this space, customers prefer integrated townships which mean large investments into projects and hence projects from the big industry players are doing well.” He adds, “The housing market should take 3-4 additional quarters to show significant signs of recovery, even though the worst is definitely behind us and growth in the economy has resumed.”
100 smart cities: nice opportunity It is certainly an interesting opportunity, which I hope and expect will be executed well by the present government.
There is a tremendous requirement to decongest Metros’ centres with increasing levels of urbanisation and these smart cities will go a long way in achieving this goal.
Reasonable costs The prices of the plethora of materials required in the housing industry have been reasonable over the last year. The labour costs have also been stable. Mr Poddar adds, “As developers we would always like a scenario where all input costs are stable and at the same time the selling prices of the inventory is rapidly increasing.” Affordable housing: a challenge “Construction technology for affordable housing is a challenge. We need rapid construction technologies at traditional construction prices, given the current market situation,” suggests Mr Poddar. A rapid increase in labour rates is expected in the foreseeable future where there will be a compression in the difference of costs between the same. Additionally the use of green building materials and solutions at affordable prices will become more and more relevant. Spend management being a critical aspect Poddar Developers, with its plenty of experience in the area, has traditionally manufactured several commodities such as steel, textiles, tyres over several decades. It has used the same ERP solutions in its construction and development business. The company considers spend management as a very important area for it in affordable housing as project management and cost management determine its profitability. n

Work more on 3R formula Over the last 25 years, since its inception,
We cannot allow a large portion of water to go waste, we have to work on 3R – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. - Anil Suri, General Manager-Sales & Marketing, Kulkarni Power Tools Ltd. (Blowers division)
Kulkarni Power Tools Ltd. (KPT) has kept pace with change. An in-depth understanding of changing customer requirements has guided it into delivering quality in the manufacturing and marketing of electric power tools. Anil Suri explains the necessity to fight with the current water scarcity challenge and the solutions offered by it for the same.
Driving factors Though India has about 16 per cent of global population, it has only 4 per cent of water resources. To address this serious issue is very imperative. According to Central Pollution Control Board, the country has an installed capacity of only 30 per cent of household waste it generates, and the rest is released into open drains or straight into the ground. However, now as awareness is increasing about scarcity of water, people are seriously working on the competitive water treatment solutions for reused and recycled water. Without solving this water issue, one cannot survive and hence solving the water issue is very important. “We cannot allow a large portion of water to go waste, we have to work on 3R – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle,” says Mr Suri.
Innovations in water treatment solutions Almost every company in water treatment is working for low cost solutions and they have achieved that, some of the water treatment technologies are nano technology, membrane filtration technology, low pressure membranes, high pressure membranes, ultraviolet
irradiation technology, advance oxidation technology, ion exchange technology, biological filtration and many more.
Products and solutions Kulkarni Power Tools offers energy efficient high speed roots blowers (twin and tri lobe); which are air cooled as water is not required for cooling purpose. It also offers exhausters, truck mounted blowers, acoustic hoods, centrifugal fans and axial fans. “We are launching air cooled tri lobe blowers which are very well accepted in export market, We are coming up with energy efficient high speed turbo blowers to cater especially water and wastewater industry which will reduce the energy consumption of the plant which ultimately increase the bottom line of a company,” informs Mr Suri.
Current trends As water scarcity is a big problem today, situation in India is also not good as lifestyle changes put more stress on the water resources. Indian government is very serious about water conservations and now it is promoting and implementing suitable programmes. Due to this, several multinational companies have ventured in India to grab these opportunities. The industry has immense potential and at the same time has cut throat competition. “While procuring water treatment solutions for water treatment, customers also should consider some points,” says Mr Suri. “First of all their requirement must be fulfilled by the technology they are buying which should be cost-effective as well and most important is after sales service.” n

Testing, monitoring and controlling making a room A
Testing, monitoring and controlling the water quality parameters are the biggest challenges. A lot of multinational companies are making their way to India to encash the opportunity available in Indian market. - Kondiba Shivaji Metkari, Inside Sales Manager, Hanna Equipments (India) Pvt. Ltd.
ccess to safe drinking water is a basic human need. Unfortunately in India many people still lack reliable access to this precious resource. Kondiba Shivaji Metkari shares his views about the current scenario in water sector and also informs regarding the innovative products offered by Hanna Instruments.
Controlling water pollution Water pollution has been one of the most important environmental concerns for India. Its largest source being the untreated sewage discharge, hence the government of India has set strict guidelines for all the manufacturing companies when it comes to sewage discharge. The Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act of 1974 restricts discharges of pollutants to water bodies and created Central and State Pollution Control Boards with authority to set standards and enforce water pollution rules. For instance a dye manufacturing company has several restrictions for disposal in land, marine, and irrigation land. They have to control certain parameters like pH, COD, BOD, copper, chromium, and magnesium etc., before discharging. The pH limit is in between 6.0 to 8.5 for land and 5.5 to 9.0 for irrigation land. As in case of COD the limit is 250 ppm (mg/l). Primary water quality criteria for drinking include: • Total coliforms organism MPN/100ml: 50 or less • pH: between 6.5 and 8.5 • Dissolved oxygen: 6mg/l or more • Biochemical oxygen demand for 5 days at 20 C: 2mg/l or less. With its latest, innovative and technologically updated instruments Hanna
Instruments helps measure all the critical water quality parameter. It has more than 3,000 products in our portfolio with which we help industries to ascertain what’s in their water. “Our instruments are not only suited for lab analysis, but also for field procedure and online water monitoring. We are committed to provide quality instruments at affordable price to Indian customers,” says Mr Metkari. “Our philosophy, “to be able to supply customers around the world with practical affordable solutions for their testing needs” has always been the reason for our existence.”
Need of having alternate water sources With increasing water pollution, nonavailability of safe and clean drinking water has been a longstanding problem. The current government’s plan to rejuvenate Ganga seems to be a good initiative. Water is the basis for all the agricultural and manufacturing activities, although the criteria of clean water are different in these contexts. India has a limited resource of fresh water, and with the pace that we are moving forward we cannot completely depend on these resources. This situation of water crisis has led to develop alternative source of water, recycling being the major one. Reusing and recycling water can ease the pressure on water resources and the environment. There are various processes available and some of them like desalination are a costly affair. “Testing, monitoring and controlling the water quality parameters is the biggest challenge. Lot of multinational companies are making their way to India to encash the opportunity available in Indian market,” observes Mr Metkari.

In house oxygen transfer testing facility for aerators up to 150 hp ratings
Environ – Vadodara accepts the challenge to save energy by 20% to 70% in any aeration system of ETP / STP Vadodara-based Environ Engineering has developed an aerator with dual impeller which helps saving energy in ETP and STP operations
A
nnually increase of 4% to 8% in electricity charges leads to reduce profits of any industry and that to the electricity burnt on non-productive plant like aeration system of Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) or Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) that runs 24 hours & 365 days. Environ Engineering Company has designed and developed an aerator with dual impeller which can offer the results up to 6 metres of aeration tank depth. In this aerator impeller, the company has provided one impeller at top which transfers the oxygen and the other impeller at the bottom which works as a mixer. There are hardly any possibilities of settlement at the floor level of the aeration tank due to impeller at the bottom.
Also, as the mixer with 100 RPM is provided at the bottom, the mixing efficiency gets increased. This results in increase of oxygen transfer rate and reduction in required HP thereby saves energy. Environ Engineering claims to be first company in India to introduce energy efficient aerators which works up to 6 metres. SWD, a technology involves simple and low maintenance assembly manufactured by Environ Engineering. Therefore, its aerators offer an excellent opportunity to reduce the operating energy cost.

and above heavy ISMB beam base is provided so the vibrations are reduced. Also the bases of the machines are machined on the top surface on heavy duty lathe which results in the gearbox life increase. Cantilevered load reaction is passed through additional bearings and housing to bottom of the beam base and to RCC platform. So gear is not at all affected by overhung load and the life of the gearbox is increased. Additional bearing support is provided to the aerator shaft. So the unbalanced cantilevered loads are not passed to the output shaft of the gearbox and the loads are taken by two extra bearings and housings. Therefore the life of the gearbox is again increased. Aptly designed MS fully machined solid shaft to take care of heavy cantilevered, unbalanced and torsional loads, supported on two heavy duty antifriction bearings housed in heavy duty cast iron bearing housing. As the shaft is fully machined, no possibility of voubling of shaft concentric running of impeller is ensured. The impeller is designed as a single shrouded pump to achieve maximum oxygen transfer and mixing efficiency. Being a semi-open type impeller, it has features of self cleaning. Hence the impeller is maintenance-free. Also the impeller is machined at centre for its concentric running. Due to conical impeller and solid MS shaft, CG lies nearer to the centre, hence less impact on loading. New generation of EEEA has the unique feature of additional impeller at the bottom for better mixing at the floor level of aeration tank. It has water depth of up to 6 metres. Due to this the oxygen transfer efficiency of the impeller is increased and more oxygen transfer is achieved with lesser HP. Also civil construction cost and the space required will be less. Premium Greaves Worm reduction gears or helical gears having suitable service factor are offered. Also, maintenance of the gearbox is minimal and handling is easier as the extra bearings are provided to the impeller shaft. Spares of the worm gearbox are also easily available at comparatively lower cost. Environ offers motors of Crompton Greaves, ABB and Siemens. Jaw-type couplings of KTR-make are provided. n

Having in-house plant: being a need than trend As the fuel costs have increased to get external water, and the water cost for procuring and discharging the same is exorbitant, everyone is eyeing to put an in-house water treatment plant. - Ajay Shroff, Managing Director, Pratham Filter Industries
Over
the years, Pratham Filter Industries has been working focusing on creating the suitable solutions on water pollution control components. It is certainly growing itself PAN India. Mr Shroff highlights specific current trend and customers’ lookout.
In-house plant The market has become too competitive and reach and availability is the only factor which matters the water treatment industry. The basic necessity and shortage of water regulates the water treatment demand in the industry. “As the fuel costs have increased to get external water, and the water cost for procuring and discharging the same
is exorbitant, everyone is eyeing to put an in-house water treatment plant to serve themselves and the community,” says Mr Shroff.
Innovations and solutions The company facilitates most of the OEM working in the fields of ETP, CETP and STP plant manufacturing to achieve the efficient results in reducing the pollution and reuse of the same water and air. Major innovations in the field are the MBR and UF technologies for reuse of water till the last drop. It maintains stocks of RO plants, WTP, STP, ETP and all kinds of filtration solutions. “We are a component company and we provide all the components required
for any kind of water related or rather liquid based system,” says Mr Shroff.
Look after ‘after sales service’ The basic requirement one should consider while buying a water treatment plant is the ‘after sales service’ as these systems require skilled people to run the system well. If the vendor is from far distance, they will not be able to serve better and the system malfunctions and the entire industry is blamed for the same. To sum up, the right product with the right brand and good engineering practice can make the system perfect and work the best to its best efficiency. n

Membrane elements from Lanxess for beverage producer in Ghana T
he reverse osmosis filter elements of the chemicals company Lanxess are helping to supply clean drinking water in northern Ghana. The watertreatment plant of Mazareka Co. Ltd., which is based in Tamale/Kanshegu, is equipped with Lewabrane RO B400 HR membrane elements. It has a capacity of 40 cu.m. per hour and supplies water for approximately 6,00,000 persons. Application technology from the Liquid Purification Technologies (LPT) business unit at Lanxess helped with the design of the filter system used by the plant. “We taught the employees of Mazareka how to use the Lewaplus design software, so that any necessary adjustments can be made to the equipment if there is a change in parameters,” says Dr Jens Lipnizki, Head of Technical Marketing Membranes, LPT. The spiral-wound Lewabrane RO B400 HR module consists of a polyamide composite membrane and was developed for industrial water treatment and the purification of drinking water. The main feature of the Lewabrane HR (high rejection) membrane is its high retention of critical components such as nitrates and organic compounds. It delivers excellent permeate quality and satisfies NSF/ANSI Standard 61 for drinking water system components.
How did it start Mazareka’s modern drinking water treatment plant is the first of its kind in the northern region of Ghana. Mazareka has set itself the goal of combining the best hygienic practices with modern reverse osmosis technology to produce high-quality water for safe consumption. “We have a major competitive advantage over the few producers in the south of the country, who have to pay high transportation costs to bring their products north,” says Dieter Heinrich, an industrial foreman from Saarland, Germany. Mr Heinrich and Moses Azare, a manager at the telecommunications company Millicom International Cellular (Tigo) in Ghana, founded Mazareka in 2013 in order to supply Tamale with water according to European quality standards. Together they worked out a business plan for the water project and, following a geological appraisal, invested the equivalent of EUR 5,000 to drill a well. In January 2013, the company erected a 300-sq.m. building that now houses a storage area, an office, and the filtering and filling system.

and soft drinks, the latter consisting of water with pineapple, cola, orange or grapefruit flavoring added. However, with the filter elements initially used in the system, the channels of the membrane elements quickly became clogged, and the elements blocked the flow of water. That problem shut down the plant. “Since we switched to Lewabrane, our filter system has been running perfectly, and it needs to be cleaned much less often. The investment was worth it, because it has also increased our productivity,” says Mr Azare. The company recently began distributing its products not just in sachets but in pet bottles as well. ‘Energised drinks’ — water with sugar, sweeteners, and lemon flavoring — are now available as well. At present, the company often has to work at night, because the grid is overloaded at peak times during the day and there are power failures. The company has already planned to expand. It wants to supply the bordering countries of Burkina Faso and Togo. By the end of the year, it is also going to buy a generator, so that it can produce without relying on the public power grid. n

Sensorex TX2000 pH/ORP transmitters for critical pH measurement S
ensorex’s TX2000 pH/ORP series transmitters’ advanced technology delivers critical analytical information from process sensors to water treatment plant operators. Designed for use with Sensorex’s easy-to-clean flat surface technology sensors, the user-friendly TX2000 integrates easily with plant control systems. Influent process monitoring can alert water treatment plant operators to contaminated raw sewage entering the plant, allowing it to be diverted and further treated to avoid process upsets. In plants using biological treatments, ORP measurement is frequently used for process control. Full featured with alarm/control relays and current outputs (4-20mA), the TX2000 transmitter interfaces to plant SCADA or DCS control
systems, keeping operators apprised of changing process conditions. The transmitter features easy-tonavigate text and graphic illustrations in a large display, backlit for operation in low light conditions. Supplied in a compact NEMA 4X/IP65 enclosure, units can be wall mounted, installed in a panel, or conveniently pipe/handrail mounted. An optional TX2000RS model offers additional features including data display charts and trend graphics, a realtime clock with logbook function, and customer defined 5-point calibration with displayed calibration curve. The RS model is also equipped with one analogue output and serial RS-485 interface for Modbus RTU or ASCII communications, for digital interface
to existing plant SCADA or DCS control systems. Both models are CE certified and include Multi-Cal calibration with automatic buffer recognition and universal 100-240VAC power supply. The TX2000 has a pH measurement range of -2.00 to 16.00pH and an oxidation reduction potential (ORP) measurement range of -1999mV to 1999mV. n

MOST IMPORTANT : All HOT DIP GALVANIZED Surfaced have a NATURAL INBORN & Generic Property of GREYING ( Losing Bright Shine ) on Exposure to Atmospheric Air, Exposure to Sunlight & UV Radiations. With the passage of Time . To Restrict this Property of All GI articles, equipments & surfaces, it is customary to BLEND ALUMINIUM Metal Powder in Such Coatings . Aluminium offers GLOSS & BRIGHT FINISH and adds to AESTHETICS and BRIGHTNESS to the Coated Metal. The most Important function and property of ANTI CORROSION : SALT SPRAY TEST LIFE is due to ZINC ( which has a natural Grey Colour). Hence any FADING of COLOUR SHADE after some time duration is NOT TO BE CONSIDERED AS ALARMING. Shade of the painted GI Surface (Either Hot Dip or COLD Galvanized Steel) is Of VERY LOW TECHNICAL SIGNIFICANCE & the Most Important property SHALL ALWAYS be Salt Spray Test Life. To RETAIN THE BRIGHTNESS of Hot Dip and Cold Galvanized surfaces over a LONGER Time Duration , The surface may be over-coated with ACRYSIL Quick Drying Clear Acrylic Lacquer by Spray application. This will RETARD Atmospheric Oxidation & Rusting.
