A NEW JOURNEY: OUR QUALITY MOVEMENT

The 82nd ACFAS Annual Scientific Conference in Tampa, Florida marks our largest conference to date with a record 2,229 attendees including distinguished speakers and international participants. All sessions were well-attended and participants actively engaged sharing information. That has been the center of the College culture—sharing and fostering fellowship among surgeons.

I am honored to represent the College and am looking forward to a productive year. I am here because of the vision of past presidents and boards that set the foundation for the College to move forward.

In my inaugural speech, I spoke of the quality movement in US healthcare—a change toward models of care that are driven by quality improvement initiatives. This has led to the creation of national quality registries

aimed at reducing costly complications from surgery that lead to readmission, reoperation and mortality.

Quality and safety in musculoskeletal care has become a topic of importance to payers, healthcare systems, patients, and regulators due to the increased volume, cost and the growing demand for public reporting. Accordingly, considerable attention has been placed on formulating payment models which incentivizes the delivery of quality, cost-efficient care.

Over 12 surgical specialties have been included in national quality registries and each surgical association have answered to the movement with their own registries. Currently, there is no defined strategy regarding quality initiative for podiatric surgery within the national research agenda.

Questions for Dr. Liu? Write him at president@acfas.org.

The College is answering this call with the development of the ACFAS National Foot and Ankle Registry (NFAR). The NFAR is our endeavor to support quality, research, benchmarking, and evidence-based decision-making. This registry signifies our commitment to patient safety/quality assurance outcomes and is a pivotal initiative not only for the College, but for our profession. As we embark on this transformative journey, we will need your active participation in shaping the future of our profession and for our patients. We will keep you updated on these exciting developments.

ACFAS Members in Action

ACFAS Student Clubs are active at each of the eleven podiatric medical schools within the United States to connect students with the College’s resources for surgical education and awareness for the specialty.

The Student Club at Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine recruited for the specialty and ACFAS with a suture workshop in collaboration with the University of Miami on February 20. The workshop trained 30 students with an extensive waitlist, while ACFAS student club members spoke on the various ways the College has enhanced their training and connected them to their future career.

Working with the PhiD chapter at the University of Miami was an incredible opportunity to showcase all the fantastic benefits that ACFAS presents to not only students but to future doctors as well. The event was organized in part with the help of Maria Hidalgo, PMS-1, who attended the University of Miami for her undergraduate studies, before enrolling at Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine. Through this collaborative effort, along with the help of Edgar Sy DPM and our ACFAS Student Club President-elect Kailee Bird, PMS-2, Vice President Samuel Xu, PMS-2, and Research Coordinator Sydni Sears, PMS-3, we were able to host an incredible showcase and suture workshop for 30 UM students. The students were overjoyed that they got the opportunity to learn and practice suture skills and learn more about the field of podiatric medicine. This not only showed a fraction of what ACFAS provides, but it also provided an avenue for open conversation about what podiatry is and is not. As future podiatric physicians, I believe that it is our duty to give back to and educate our communities about the field of podiatry. It was incredibly rewarding to see the passion in not only our student doctors, but the undergraduate students who may have just discovered a field of medicine that they may not have been aware of before.

Voices

Why did you attend the ACFAS Annual Scientific Conference?

“I find this conference, out of all the other conferences I go to, by far have the best education, the most up-to-date information, and the most cumulative knowledge with the least bias. People are very willing to share successes and their failures, and everyone coming together at once shows what is truly working and not working. It’s an all-encompassing look at the profession.”

“I love the names that come to talk, the biggest names come to ACFAS. It’s an amazing place to learn the different ways to treat foot and ankle patients.”

“I like how it is an amazing networking opportunity. I want to do a Fellowship, and their Fellowship Fair is helpful. It’s good to see the different kinds of researchers and projects being prepared and worked on. It inspires me to explore different aspects of foot and ankle surgery.”

“It’s the epicenter of the profession in regard to research. I love how the posters and manuscripts start generating ideas and I encourage our residents to participate both doing posters and reviewing them. Also, getting up to speed on everything that is new out there, networking, all of this is truly important. This is the key place for the profession to gather.”

ACFAS Chris Mahaffey Leadership Development Program Cohort Comes Full Circle

After a year of personal study and collaborative learning, the inaugural cohort of the ACFAS Chris Mahaffey Leadership Development Program have graduated!

This group of surgeons undertook guided coursework, virtual discussion groups, and small-group capstone projects designed to gain experience in varying paths to leadership success in the profession. As a part of the program, each person was assigned an individual mentor to guide them throughout the process with firsthand insights on the specialty and shared passions such as academia, research and practice type. At the end of the learning cycle, the cohort gathered at ACFAS 2024 in Tampa for a full-day

workshop and to present capstone projects to their mentors and the ACFAS Board of Directors.

Cohort members later hosted a HUB Session in the Exhibit Hall to talk about their experiences throughout the year, the impact on their career and practice, and to encourage every qualified member to complete Level 1 and apply for Level 2 for a chance to experience their journeys.

All ACFAS Members can register at any time for Level 1 of the program. This level is virtual, complimentary, and can be completed at your own pace. Level 1 must be completed to be considered for admission to Level 2.

Level 2 includes monthly online modules, live webinars, mentor connection, and an inperson workshop and capstone presentation/ceremony at the Annual Scientific Conference. Level 2 is only open to ABFAS Board Certified Fellow Members of ACFAS and completion of Level 1 is a prerequisite. The program is highly selective.

ACFAS encourages every member to take full advantage of this award-winning program to better themselves as they lead their practice, program, or one day the College itself. Visit acfas.org/LeadershipDevelopment to start today!

The interactions with my mentee and I have been outstanding. I look forward to the calls each month, and together we’ve been able to help navigate the program on a personal level. It pushes him to not just perceive what he’s learning, but to act on it and make a difference with the skills he’s gained.

odds to achieve greatness. He encouraged those in attendance to continually strive for their best to reach their dreams, regardless of any challenges they face along the way.

As always, the Annual Scientific Conference featured top-notch education with hands-on workshops, lectures, HUB sessions and industry presentations. Popular sessions included Apprentice vs. The Master –Controversies, pitting experts in the field against the surgeon who trained them in friendly debate. International Flatfoot provided a comparative showcase of how a common condition was addressed by foot and ankle surgeons from across the world.

Finally, ACFAS 2024 ended with the widely enjoyed Complications Jeopardy gameshow session complete with a roaring crowd and comedic twists.

Tampa also provided opportunities to connect with friends and colleagues – with some unexpected experiences that kept attendees smiling throughout their stay. Crowds between sessions were greeted by a DJ with a bicycle-mounted sound system, social events featured tropical entertainment such as steel drums and dueling ukeleles, and a renowned sand artist slowly crafted the ACFAS 2024 logo in front of the Exhibit Hall.

Feet on the Street

The American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine (AACPM) has launched a new initiative, Feet on the Street, dedicated to growing the number of applicants to colleges of podiatric medicine. The College is committed to supporting their efforts and is seeking volunteers across the country to become an ambassador of the specialty and inspire the next generation.

Feet on the Street combines multichannel marketing and volunteer networking to target the 220 colleges across the country in close proximity to the eleven podiatric

medical schools. This outreach to pre-med undergraduates is a critical opportunity to show students the varied career paths podiatry offers, and how passionate ACFAS members are about their chosen profession.

Volunteer ambassadors will visit their local colleges to speak with students and program directors about the breadth of podiatric medicine and the path to studying surgery. Allowing students to shadow a day in the life of a foot and ankle surgeon creates firsthand experiences that may inspire a career in the specialty.

The College asks any member with the time and interest to consider offering their office for a job shadowing opportunity, or consider visiting a local university on behalf of the Feet on the Street initiative to advance the specialty and podiatric medicine by representing the profession with pride and passion. Apply to volunteer at acfas.org/FeetOnTheStreet.
