TURNING THE PAGE TO THE NEXT CHAPTER Among the hustle of the holidays with our families and counting down to the Annual Scientific Conference, I have barely had time to stop and count my own days left as President of ACFAS. Before I see you all in Tampa to finish my term and pass the gavel to President-elect Dr. George Tye Liu, I would like to thank everyone who made this year possible.

We have made amazing strides in developing and delivering trusted, innovative scientific education to members at each stage in their career. We have continued to offer exceptional surgical skills offerings, including the addition of a joint course with AO Foundation: Basic Principles of Foot and Ankle Surgery for DPMs. The ACFAS Chris Mahaffey Leadership Development Program will celebrate the graduation of its first cohort of Level 2 participants and mentors at ACFAS 2024. Note that applications for next cohort will be available in March 2024. If you have not completed Level 1 of the program, you can begin the self-paced course at no cost at acfas.org (this is a pre-requisite to apply for Level 2).

Our committees and staff also worked hard to expand our virtual education offerings for members, with a successful Women’s Virtual Symposium in April and the innovative Ankle Arthritis Virtual Symposium in November. The growth of virtual programs such as Practice Management Webinar Wednesdays and the ACFAS Fellowship Zoom Rooms allow our members to build connections and access premiere education without having to travel.

Our Board of Directors also visit a podiatric medical school each year, along with an ABFAS representative, to present to the students. In an effort to increase the value of these visits to the students, the ACFAS Board delivered a cadaver-based surgical skills course to the students at Scholl. It was a proud moment to see the entire ACFAS Board leading a lab to educate and train students to common foot and ankle surgical procedures and allow for development of hands-on skills.

Across every branch of ACFAS are dedicated volunteers who have chosen to give

their time, talents, and resources to improving the specialty. From developing education to promoting the specialty, these committee members, liaisons, reviewers, and regional leaders are setting the pace for every aspect of our Strategic Plan in a collective effort to advance the art and science of foot and ankle surgery.

I want to sincerely thank those who have served ACFAS over the past year. To the Board of Directors, committee and task force members, and dedicated ACFAS staff: your passion, commitment, and expertise are greatly valued. When I pass the gavel in a few months, the volunteers on our committees and task forces will change as well.

While it can be challenging to transition, we are also eager to embrace the new ACFAS members that are looking to help the College advance its mission. Thank you to each of you for all that you do for the College and the profession. I look forward to watching ACFAS continue to grow and flourish in 2024 and beyond.

Multi-Specialty Groups: Is This the Practice for You? As graduating residents seek their first job placement, they often see a crossroad between pursuing hospital positions or setting out to develop their own private practice. This traditional decision now has a new option in the form of multi-specialty groups, a rapidly growing practice format that offers a unique opportunity for foot and ankle surgeons.

Multi-specialty groups are beneficial because it includes medical practitioners in different specializations that complement each other to provide a full range of patient services with a third-party managing the central logistics. Foot and ankle surgeons are often sought for these groups because they catering to forefoot deformities, foot and ankle arthritis, sports injuries, or diabetic limb salvage treatment. Rather than

reporting to a single department or operating as an independent practice owner, a surgeon in a multi-specialty team is a specialist in a larger team with clear boundaries and scope of practice.

Practice management committee member Lauren Wurster, DPM, FACFAS is a foot and ankle surgeon and is part of a multi-specialty group in. She started her practice in a traditional format but gradually sought out a multi-specialty role.

“By being in a multi-specialty practice, I have more flexibility and freedom to be able to teach students, be active in the profession and my community, and travel to educational seminars than if I were a private practitioner and needing someone to take over while I was gone or worry about a loss of practice revenue,” Dr. Wurster explains.

A multi-specialty office format has a key advantage: less time and effort spent on administrative details and avoiding being the sole provider for your practice. Dr. Wurster relates the peace of mind this can provide, “For those valuing work-life balance, multi-specialty roles can be the gold standard in schedule flexibility.

While this office type offers a ‘clock in, clock out’ lifestyle that seems relaxed compared to the ongoing decision-making of an independent or partnered practice, it comes with the cost of strategic control over operations and having to factor the needs of the wider team in business decisions. This layer of bureaucracy can sometimes be an obstacle.

“There are times you may wish to have a new technology or treatment option for patients, but that competes with other needs

Media Training is Back in Tampa Learn your way around the media in Tampa at ACFAS 2024 with free media training!

Being media savvy can go a long way in helping you promote your practice and the profession. You’ll get the opportunity to learn PR basics and how to speak to the media as part of your practice and on behalf of the College as an ACFAS spokesperson during a free, formal training program held during ACFAS 2024.
