DECEMBER 2020 ISSUE
Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students, We trust that you are all safe and healthy and are enjoying your holiday break. As the beginning of Semester Two is fast approaching (Monday, 4 January), we are providing some important updates. We have continued to work with local authorities to address all of the specific criteria around reopening the campus to students. Our positive and open relationship with local authorities coupled with our ability to demonstrate health and safety protocols that exceed local criteria have led to our readiness to reopen. We now wait patiently for news from the local authorities regarding the official school reopening. Our plan is to commence Semester Two with a continuation of virtual schooling (excluding Kindergarten students - face to face and online) and transition to a phased approach where our hybrid model of delivery will see specific groups of students learning on campus and learning from home. Year 7 Parents Social Event Special thanks to Ms Dewi Sumawijaya and all of the Year 7 parents and students for organizing a social gathering prior to the holiday break. It was also an opportunity for the students and parents to farewell the Slusher family (Doug, Merry, Dillon and Dustin) who moved to the USA. The Slusher family were great supporters of ACG School Jakarta and they will be missed. However, it was great to see the Year 7 students having fun in the rain and enjoying some delicious sushi. Our Year 7 Parent Rep, Ms Dewi Sumawijaya did a fantastic job of coordinating the entire event.

Global youth conference builds internationalism Clean water, exploitation of our oceans, maternal death and regulation of Space were just some of the burning issues debated by high school and university students from 81 different countries at the 2020 Model United Nations (MUN) Conference last month. Among the participants were five highly passionate ACG School Jakarta change-makers – Chiara Mini and Anirudh Sripathi (Year 11), and Anh Vu, Raahim Hadi and Rebecca Balanescu (Year 12). Designed to foster global awareness of issues and develop collaborative problem-solving strategies, the international conference empowers students to hone their critical thinking and research skills while boosting their self-confidence and public speaking capabilities. “It is important for an international school to continually develop its worldwide outlook. And participation in a forum such as this promotes a spirit of internationalism,” says ACG School Jakarta ITGS (Information Technology in a Global Society) and Global Perspectives teacher, Brendan McTiernan. MUN provides an ideal pathway for youth to strengthen their sense of internationalism and gain a deeper awareness of global issues. This year’s delegates spent six weeks getting ready for the event, researching their designated motions, preparing policy statements, drafting resolutions, and polishing their speeches. “The debating sessions on draft resolutions and amendments were real highlights and the ACG School Jakarta students particularly enjoyed collaborating with other committee delegates and improvising speeches in favour of, and against, resolutions and amendments.” This is the second year ACG School Jakarta has participated in the forum. While last year saw delegates congregate in Singapore, 2020’s virtual conference (which ran from 16th to 20th November) still packed a big punch. “While some of the social interaction was lost being online, this year we saw greater interaction from our delegates in the debating sessions in terms of collaboration on draft resolutions, making speeches in favour or against, and in seeking points of clarification and information on draft resolutions and speeches.” With 620 student delegates as well as teachers, administrators and MUN directors, the 2020 Model United Nations conference offered an outstanding experience to inspire and engage ACG School Jakarta’s most ardent global citizens.

LIYSF is all about young scientists using science to help tackle unmet global needs so we just had to share Fawzan’s research on use of machine learning to help people living with spinal cord injuries. Take a read below: ‘In 2016, it was estimated that over 85,556 people live with a Spinal Cord Injury (SCI). People with Spinal Cord Injuries (SCI) often struggle to move certain muscle groups and overcome barriers for comfortable living. Through using an Electrooculogram (EOG)- based Human Computer Interface (HCI), people with SCI can use their eye movements and blinking patterns to comfortably control things such as a robotic hand’ Encourage a young person with an interest in STEM to apply: https://bit.ly/38I8Cq1 Join us at #LIYSF2021 to hear more inspirational research from young scientists and be inspired! Our two week STEM summer school held at Imperial College London is going ahead next year as a hybrid-event. We will hold our usual event “on-campus” in London (with required safety measures in place) whilst offering a carefully curated experience of the LIYSF programme online as LIYSF VIRTUAL, for those unable to travel. We have partnered with a digital platform provider to deliver an exciting and engaging virtual experience.
