Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students, I hope the holiday period has provided an opportunity for families to rest and enjoy valuable time together. I also hope it has been a time to reflect and look back over what has been another extraordinary calendar year. For ACG School Jakarta, 2021 has certainly challenged us in many ways, but it has been the pandemic’s impact on teaching and learning that has forced us to make necessary adjustments to further support and accommodate students at school and at home. Our guiding statements and aspirational vision continue to form the foundation of decision making and inspire our work on a daily basis. Our Vision states that we will become a school of creative, innovative problem solvers who are entrepreneurial and confident users of technology. Through creative learning experiences, we will pursue opportunities to excel in our area of interest and affect change in our local and global communities. We are building a school where taking responsibility, acting courageously and exhibiting leadership are actively encouraged and rewarded. We are developing a school community that respects nature, indigenous culture and expressions of difference alongside unifying traditions. Our Mission states that we are a diverse community of learners who are open-minded, responsible, and caring. We inquire into the world around us through academic programmes that aim to prepare students for life’s opportunities. With an understanding of and respect for others, we actively strive to make a difference, locally and globally. As we head into Semester Two, we will continue our accreditation work with the Council of International Schools to address the Preparatory Evaluation criteria and call upon faculty, staff, parents and students to engage in this important evaluation process to develop a clear blueprint for ACG School Jakarta’s bright future. When we return from the holiday break, we have a Faculty Professional Development Day scheduled for Monday, 10 January followed by four full days of virtual teaching and learning (January 11-14). This arrangement will provide all families and staff with the opportunity to travel over the break and complete required quarantine periods and PCR testing (for staff and faculty only) before returning to limited face to face/hybrid teaching and learning on Monday, 17 January. Wishing you all a happy 2022 full of good health and happiness. Shawn Hutchinson Principal

Message from the
VICE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students, As we spend time with families and friends over the holiday period it seems a good time to reflect on the closing of the school semester and look forward towards what 2022 has in store for us at ACG School Jakarta. December saw all our students receive their reports after a semester of academic endeavour, hard work, problem-solving, revision and exams. More than anything else we hope that all students and parents understand their reports and grades and feel that they are a fair reflection of their achievements; report grades or advisory comments should never come as a surprise but as an opportunity to celebrate and focus once more on what has been done and what still can be improved and amended in the coming semester. Semester Two holds the promise of IA submissions for Year 13 as well as the potential mock exams in March for Years 11 and 13 and then actual exams (IGCSE and IBO permitting) in May and June. Of course it is not all academic work ahead; as Radio Wolf proved with their trailer, we can expect more fun and informative programming from the team to complement and expand on the work done by the fabulous Assemblies team. We can look forward to another wonderful graduation at the Dharmawangsa on Saturday, 4June before heading towards the summer break on Friday, 18 June. Please make sure you get the rest you deserve over the remainder of the holidays and see you in January! Richard Todd VIce Principal, DP Coordinator and University Guidance

Message from the SENIOR TEACHER EARLY LEARNING and PYP COORDINATOR Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students, As we enjoy our holiday break, I would like to say a huge thanks to our wonderful community for your continued support as we continue to deliver our hybrid learning programme this semester. I could not be prouder of the Kindergarten and Primary students and their hard work during Semester One. They should be very proud of their learning and achievements and I look forward to another great Semester and seeing everyone in 2022! And now, some PYP New Year holiday reading for you about the ‘Approaches to Learning’ in the Primary Years Programme. As you read the information, perhaps consider how you can support your child at home, in developing these life-long ATL skills. As an IB school and at the heart of our Primary Years Programme (PYP) are the ‘Approaches to Learning’ Skills. (ATLs). Learning how to learn is fundamental to a student’s education. The Approaches to Learning are five categories of interrelated skills to support students of all ages to become selfregulated learners who know how to ask good questions, set effective goals and pursue their aspirations with the determination to achieve them. Take care and stay safe. Vanessa Ellison Senior Teacher Early Learning and PYP Coordinator

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 1 During our third Unit of Inquiry, How We Organize Ourselves, Year 1’s explored the central idea ‘services work together to meet the needs of a community.’ Students had opportunities to create their own community model in class. We are now finding out about the different types of community helpers. Students interviewed security guards of ACG in class and learned about their job and also how the services help people. Year 1’s champs are little inquirers that enjoy researching. We look forward in continuing our inquiry in our new term.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 4 Year 4 had a very busy December. We celebrated the completion of a Semester long Unit of Inquiry called ‘Who We Are’ where students presented their summative assessment on the various human body systems and explained its relationship with other body systems. Students created Canva and PowerPoint presentations, posters and models of their chosen body systems. Year 4 students realized that the body systems are all interconnected and interact with each other to achieve balance. Here you will see Raja, Eah Eah Asad and Keiichi presenting on the digestive system, Aesha on the circulatory system, Aqilah and Raphael on the skeletal system, Felipe on the respiratory system and NurIvy focusing on the heart. For Math, we were learning about area and perimeter. Here you can see our students collaboratively working together, using the meter trundle wheel to measure the perimeter of the field and gym. We were also familiarizing ourselves with fraction and number games in our class. For Literacy, students have been learning about different poetry genres as well as how to write newspaper articles. We created the Acrostic Poem and the Haiku. Here are examples of Haiku’s our students have created. Year 4 students have also enjoyed spending time in the new library, choosing books to take home as well as read in the classroom.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 5 In our unit under the theme “How We Express Ourselves”, students learned about the power of art to inspire action in our local and global communities. As we loved this song, originally performed by the talented singer and activist Ben Harper, we decided to perform this as a way to request our school community to do their part to bring peace and collaboration to the world by doing our part!

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 11 Economics Year 11 IGCSE students have done a very good job in Economics class this month. Appreciation to the students who have contributed to work on research projects. They analyzed the reasons for different rates of population growth in different countries, and discussed the effects of changes in the size and structure of population on different countries to economy growth. The students used a Population Diagram to analyze the difference of population growth in countries such as USA, Norway, Sweden, Chad, South Africa, Australia, and Philippines.
Year 12 Economics Students in Year 12 HL and SL are very well engaged, especially during research project classes. They investigated Taxation and Subsidy in different countries such as the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore. Interestingly, they compared the countries Taxation and Subsidy systems and evaluated how effective the programmes were to see the impact on each country’s economy.
Year 13 Economics Our wonderful students worked very well in developing the topics of Exchange Rates towards the context of the Swiss Franc. The value of the Swiss Franc has increased significantly against all other major currencies over the last 15 years. It has performed particularly well against the Dollar and the Euro. This is partly due to the currency crisis that affected the Euro in 2013 and the low-interest rate policy adopted by the European Central Bank and the US Federal Reserve. Switzerland is a rich, stable economy that is attractive to portfolio investors. It also has an attractive banking sector that makes it a safe haven for investment funds from around the work.

Wellness Committee Welcome to our first newsletter items from The Wellness Committee! Over the next Semester, we will be bring you information, activities and events which promote the four aspects of wellness within our ACG Community. We will focus on Social, Emotional, Physical and Mental wellness, so look out for more information over the coming months. As we enjoy this special holiday season, we have put together some activities that you may wish to try with your family and friends. Showcase your talent Encourage your creativity—and perhaps discover the next musical superstar—with a family talent show. This fun activity is great for all ages—you can either encourage your kids to practice themselves and then perform for you after dinner or get in on the fun yourselves with your own acts. From karaoke and lip-syncing to dancing and juggling, anything goes! Your family talent show can be as elaborate or as simple as you like. This might mean sets, costumes, an original script, and live music—or none of that at all. If your kids aren’t born performers, encourage those with stage fright to direct, built a set, or choose costumes. Take in a movie Keeping kids from watching too much television over the holiday break is always a challenge, but not all TV is bad—especially if you watch it together. Binge a bunch of old holiday classics, invite each family member to select a movie, or choose something you want to watch and use this as an opportunity to share your interests and knowledge with your kids.
Have a Friendly Competition If you have older kids, why not challenge them to a friendly showdown during their holiday break? Teenagers especially love showing up their parents, so hit up a ping pong or pool table and show them who’s boss. If you don’t have a table at home, look into a local sports club or activity center.
Giving to others A great way to develop those all-important Independent, self-help skills, is for your child to tidy their room and look after their personal things. Through this activity or clearing and sorting, encourage your child to set aside toys and games that they no longer play with or have grown out of. There is someone out there that would love them and it is a great feeling to give to others.

Wellness Committee Read a book Even if you regularly read together, change things up a little during this holiday break. Choose something different from your ordinary reading material so it stands out as a holiday tradition, like a book of Christmas poems or a classic novel read in daily instalments. If reading together is not already part of your routine, the holiday season is a great opportunity to start.
Writing a story Penning a story alongside your child can be a great memento of your holiday break. Younger children can contribute to a group story, while older kids can either write their own or illustrate for the family. Bind or laminate your book to keep as a memory of the season and revisit each year (and add to your collection!).
