Vice Principal Message from the
Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students, We had a busy end to Semester 1: On 15 December, our Year 6 parents attended a presentation on our upcoming PYPX (PYP Exhibition), which is going to be a 9-week-long, in-depth, student-led inquiry for Year 6 students, between 29 January – 26 April 2024. The PYPX will showcase our students’ PYP journey, and unite teachers, parents and other members of the community in a collaborative real-world experience. It will be a celebration of the transition of learners from primary to secondary. More details to come in the January issue of this newsletter

Y6 teachers are looking for: GUEST SPEAKERS to inspire our Y6 students as they prepare for their PYPX. Your presentation can be on any topic, but should have a focus on taking action and making a positive difference in the local community or globally. Do you have a passion that you would like to share with the year 6 students? If you are interested or know someone in the local community, please contact Andrew Rae by email: andrew.rae@acgedu.com In the the evening on 15 December, we gathered to enjoy our Semester 1 Music and Dance recital, with many a talented budding musician and dancer among our student body showcasing their talents. The next day, Upper Secondary students had a fun-filled Prom Night. On the following Monday, 18 December, students, teacher and parents came together to celebrate the diversity of our school community. A total of 35 nationalities are represented in our student body, and we watched a lovely procession of flags, followed by games and competitions in our House Olympiad. Students enjoyed abundant food from a variety of cuisines, courtesy of our gracious parents. Primary students enjoyed having their House Olympiad passports stamped by the various “culinary ambassador” parents. The Houses at ACG School Jakarta are: Biawak (Blue), Cicak (Yellow), Gecko (Green), Komodo (Red) Students are allocated to a House on admission, ideally subject to restrictions such as being in the same House as siblings and an awareness of the balance of numbers, ethnic groupings and gender per year level. Students earn House points in a variety of ways, including displaying positive behaviour, sports accomplishments, and participating in a range of academic, cultural, and sports competitions. The system fosters a sense of community and friendly competition, and provides our students with an opportunity for positive relationships across age groups, and lasting memories. Message from IB Diploma
Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students,

Thank you to everyone for a great semester. The IB students have been working diligently this semester and I hope that their report grades have reflected their efforts. It was lovely to end the semester with the Prom and House Olympiad, both which were extremely successful. I’d like to give a big thank you to StuCo for their work organizing Prom, especially Sarah for arranging most of the vendors. Year 12 – The first semester of IB ends for Year 12! They should be adjusting to the rigors of the IB program, and I hope that everyone is enjoying their subjects. The DP students have recently had an Extended Essay session and will do some initial reading and research over the break prior to finalizing their subject and research question. Year 13- Year 13s have been extremely busy with several Internal Assessments due in Semester 1. Additionally, they are finalizing their Extended Essays and TOK Essays. Having those completed early will assist them with their future assessments and preparation for examinations. We aim to have all subject content completed by February to allow for further revision and examination preparation. The Mid-Year Examinations were a good taste of the upcoming Mock and IB examinations, so the results of these should inform their preparation and revision focus. Mr. Wilson has been working with the students on their university applications, so everyone should be on track with those. A reminder that any transcripts or recommendation letters should be requested at least one week in advance. I hope that the students have some rest and enjoy time with family over the break. This is also a good opportunity to catch up on any outstanding tasks and get some revision or reading completed before lessons start in January. If you celebrate Christmas, have a wonderful celebration with your family. I wish everyone a safe and restful break. I hope to see everyone back, full of energy for Semester 2. Year 4 Learning
In their culminating Unit of Inquiry (UOI) project, our enthusiastic Year 4 students are embarking on an exciting exploration of the world of renowned travelers. Channeling their inner historians, geographers, and storytellers, the students have delved into the remarkable tales of worldfamous explorers. From uncovering the mysteries of ancient trade routes to retracing the steps of modern-day adventurers, each student has chosen a celebrated traveler to research and present to their peers. The presentations promise to be an insightful journey, shedding light on the diverse cultures, discoveries, and challenges faced by these intrepid explorers. Through this engaging project, our Year 4 students not only enhance their research and presentation skills but also cultivate a deeper appreciation for the rich tapestry of human exploration and discovery.

Year 6 Learning
Our Year 6 parents recently had the privilege of participating in an illuminating PYP (Primary Years Programme) Exhibition workshop, expertly led by their children’s dedicated homeroom teacher, Mr. Andrew. The workshop aimed to provide parents with valuable insights into the PYP Exhibition—an integral component of the International Baccalaureate curriculum. Mr. Andrew skillfully navigated the parents through the exhibition’s purpose, structure, and the role it plays in fostering critical thinking and independent inquiry skills in our Year 6 students. Through engaging activities and discussions, parents gained a deeper understanding of how they can support and enrich their child’s learning journey during this crucial phase. The workshop fostered a collaborative and supportive environment, strengthening the school-home partnership in nurturing well-rounded, globally minded individuals.

Mathematics Workshop

Parents’ Coffee Morning
Our second Parents’ Coffee Morning was a delightful gathering hosted at Antipodean Kemang, fostering a warm and open forum for our parents to connect and share insights. The focal point of our discussion was the eagerly anticipated House Olympiad, generating excitement and camaraderie among all attendees. As we sipped coffee and engaged in meaningful conversations, valuable perspectives emerged on how parents can actively participate and support this upcoming event. The collaborative spirit was palpable, laying the groundwork for a successful House Olympiad. We extend our gratitude to all parents who contributed to the vibrant discussions. Looking ahead, our next Parents’ Coffee Morning is scheduled for January 31 at Bruno Cafe, conveniently located just across from the school. The Secondary Prom Night was an unforgettable affair, orchestrated with meticulous detail and flair by our talented Student Committee. The event, held at a glamorous venue, radiated elegance and sophistication, providing our secondary students with a memorable night to celebrate their academic journey. From the enchanting decorations to the lively music, every element of the prom was a testament to the dedication and creativity of our student organizers. The dance floor buzzed with laughter and joy as students, dressed in their finest attire, created cherished moments with friends. House Olympiad
We’re excited to share Ms. Eny Rahayu’s outstanding contribution at the recent IB Dunia Conference at Tzu Chi School, PIK. Her presentation, “Photojournalism Analysis for Essay Writing,” drew over 25 educators, showcasing innovative approaches to incorporating semiotics in analysing news images. Ms. Eny’s interactive session provided practical strategies for educators, emphasizing the importance of media literacy in today’s digital age. Her blend of theoretical insights and handson activities captivated the audience, demonstrating her expertise and passion in teaching. This event not only highlighted Ms. Rahayu’s pedagogical skills but also reinforced our commitment to innovative and rigorous education practices.

Exciting News from Our Global Achiever! Our talented student recently participated in the VANDA Global Finals held in Bali, and oh, what an adventure it was! To qualify, they triumphed through the international round, setting the stage for an extraordinary experience. From meeting new friends to proudly cheering for Indonesia, our student showcased their skills, bringing home some well-deserved medals. The competition was a blend of fun, challenges, and occasional craziness, especially during the team round. Beyond science, the event featured competitions in coding, arts, maths, and addressing global issues, offering a multitude of opportunities. Kudos to our brave participant for seizing this incredible chance, despite the nerves and intensive preparation. We’re immensely proud of their achievements and can’t wait to see what future challenges they conquer!

Inspired Global Camp With more than 80,000 students and over 100 schools worldwide, Inspired offers unrivalled opportunities on a global scale, as ACG School Jakarta’s Zara Schneider recently experienced. A two week exchange programme in Spain has sparked a paradigm shift for ACG School Jakarta student Zara Schneider. Not only did the exchange broaden her horizons, but it also opened her eyes to a new creative direction. A once in a lifetime opportunity Inspired’s Global Camps give students the opportunity to spend a European Summer at a participating Inspired school across Spain, Switzerland, Italy, UK, Portugal, Costa Rica, Kenya and Vietnam. Each camp offers an itinerary focused on sports, the arts, or English - providing an unforgettable way for students to pursue their passions, as well as being immersed into the local life. Zara recently spent the summer at International School San Patricio, Toledo, a UNESCO World Heritage city just 30 minutes from Madrid. “My parents and I were already planning a vacation in Spain as they used to live there and it’s my birthplace, although we moved to Indonesia when I was one,” says Zara. “They found out about the camp and coincidentally, it started just before we planned to leave. It was an art camp and I have a great interest in art, so they signed me up.” Inspirational setting International School San Patricio boasts world-class facilities, including a designated visual arts centre and a photography laboratory. Team that with the wealth of creative inspiration provided by being in Spain, and it’s fair to say Zara was in her element. “It was a wonderful environment at the school and when we went on field trips we saw more of the landscapes and the town with its really nice architecture. It’s so rich with history there and the amazing landscapes made for great photo opportunities. One day we went on a photography field trip to one of the town’s oldest churches, and the moment I stepped inside I was blown away. I can’t explain the feelings that came over me. The church was so huge and beautiful it was hard to comprehend – I’ve never reacted like that to anything else before!” A newfound passion Before she knew it, Zara had discovered a new-found love of photography. “I never considered myself a fan of photography but learning about it from Carlos (the amazing photography teacher at International School San Patricio) and having the chance to use more advanced cameras for the first time, opened up a whole new world for me. I became obsessed, carrying one of the cameras with me as often as I could – even to the canteen for mealtimes or at night to the dorms to experiment with ‘light painting’. In fact, I fell in love with photography so much that I bought my own camera when I got back to Indonesia and now I’m considering pursuing photography at college.” Friendships and fun But boosting her creative capabilities wasn’t the only upside. Zara says she also made new friends and gained a greater insight into other cultures. “As well as learning more about Spain, I learned about Romanian and South African life from my two closest friends on the exchange, Ana and Kellyn. The three of us were the oldest students on the programme, and because of the age differences in the camp we learned how to better interact with younger kids too. I developed close bonds with some of the other campers and one of them in particular, Maiia, became like a little sister to me.” Embrace the opportunity For students who might be thinking of joining an Inspired Global Exchange Programme or Camp, Zara says “Go for it”! “It’s such a fun experience. I made new friends, found new interests, and got better at talking to others, which had always been a problem for me. And after the camp finished I flew back to Indonesia on my own. That’s the first time I’ve ever travelled alone and it was actually pretty thrilling!” ACG JKT | 14
