Message from the Vice Principal - Primary Dear Parents and Caregivers, I can’t believe that the first half of the school year is complete! It went by entirely too fast, as it always does. The students have learned so much already this year and have participated in many exciting learning experiences. As you head off for your term break for some much-needed time with family, I wanted to take a moment to discuss reflection. During the break, as you spend time with family celebrating holidays or traveling together, encourage your child(ren) to take a moment to reflect on the past year. Think about what went well this year, what successes you can celebrate, and what new experiences you had. Based on your successes this year, reflect on what you want to continue doing next year. Next think about some challenges you encountered, what you want to improve for next year, and what new experiences you would like to try. Make a list of areas in which you would like to grow, goals you have for yourself, and a list of new experiences to try. If you would like to take it a step further, you can choose a word to guide you next year. The practice of choosing ‘One Little Word’ is one of reflection, where you look back on the previous year and the goals you have for the future and choose a word that embodies how you want to feel or what you want to do in the new year. For a list of ‘One Little Word’ examples, click here. I hope that you all have a relaxing and restful holiday with your families, and I look forward to seeing you all back in January 2020 to bring in a new decade! Learning at ACG School Jakarta Kindergarten In Kindergarten, we have been exploring 2D shapes, their names and their properties. The K4 students had fun making shapes with their bodies, and K3 students learned how to create simple shapes using sticky tac and popsicle sticks. Our K2 learners displayed amazing skills when completing different shape inset puzzles‌ such confidence and speed! All the students enjoyed using the sticky shapes to make their own repeating shape patterns. Great job as always Kindergarten!
Year 1 Cultural Clothes Year 1 students have been learning about Culture and enjoyed a Traditional Dress Up Day where they discussed their clothing, their culture and told stories about their families and celebrations. They participated in activities related to their cultures, such as trying new foods, painting a picture of their traditional clothing and writing about their cultural celebrations. It was a really fun day and the students were confident to show their clothing and talk about their culture.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 3 Field Trips For their Unit of Inquiry on ‘Who We Are’, Year 3 went on three memorable excursions to places of worship. The first was to a Sikh Gurudwara Tanjung Priok, a trip made possible by our Nagpal and Leen families who gave the red-carpet treatment to our students and teachers. Our students experienced rituals, presentations, performances, a photo exhibition from the Indian Embassy and special food. Our second trip was to the Muslim Masjid Raya Pondok Indah. Our students experienced similar rituals prior entering a Mosque, were given a history and explanation of what to find in a Mosque, the places people pray and how they pray. The Masjid presented the students with a gift and a rare illustrated copy of a Koran with English, Indonesian and Arabic translations. After the Mosque, students visited the largest Catholic Cathedral in Indonesia called Gereja Katedral, where they visited the church museum as well as toured the Cathedral. The students were again treated to a rare meeting of an important leader of the Catholic Church in Indonesia -the Cardinal Ignatius Suharyo Hardjoatmodjo, who was visiting the church at the same time as our school excursion. These memorable excursions provided a nice ending to our Unit of Inquiry and contributed to instilling open-mindedness toward other religions.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 4 Field Trip to Sari Roti Factory In connection with our How We Organise Ourselves unit of inquiry about how many products go through a process of change before they are consumed or used, Year 4 went on a fieldtrip to the Sari Roti Factory. The students were able to see many different machines that are used in the process of making bread. They watched a presentation about the dozens of Sari Roti factories that are strategically placed around Indonesia, and all the different types of bread that are made. Since the factory is in an industrial area, they also took a small tour of the area that has more than 220 factories. This area consisted of a range of different factories, including steel, textile, toys, noodles and cosmetic factories.
Year 6 Assembly - Primary The Year 6 students presented their student-led assembly last Friday, 13 December. During our Where We Are in Place and Time unit, students learned about explorers, navigational methods, and space exploration. Each student researched a navigational instrument or method, and they presented a timeline of navigational tools that explorers have used throughout time. To connect with their learning about space exploration, the students performed a skit to reenact the first moon landing with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, which was the highlight of the show. For their summative assessment, each student chose an explorer to research and wrote a biography about their life and exploration. At the end of the assembly, the student performed a song about explorers that they choregraphed by themselves. They were excited to perform the song again at the End of Term Assembly this week.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Science - Secondary Year 12 IBDP Biology students have been studying the topic of Biological Molecules. DNA is the code written into every single one of our cells. It gives our body instructions on how to make proteins that give us our physical characteristics, such as eye colour and blood type. The Year 12 students made amazing models of the double helix structure of DNA, demonstrating the complimentary pairing between bases and the sugar-phosphate backbone.
Sports Update - Swim Meet The Orcas Swim Team season is now in full swing. This is the forth year of the program under the guidance ofnhead coaches David Firdaus and Ryan McPhee. Coming off the success of last season, winning first place at the JASIS Swim Carnival, the pair is excited to work together once again to continue to develop the team. It is once again a very popular option for ACG students in Years 3 to 13, with thirty swimmers registered. The first meet of the season, the BSJ Invitational, took place on 6-7 December, at the British School Jakarta. This was a long course event, meaning 50 meter lengths. With only five weeks of training, the Orcas performed very well at this challenging and competitive meet. Many personal bests were achieved and two medals were obtained. Congratulations to team captain Aiman Tengku Rasidi on his bronze medal in Boys 13 and Over 100 meter backstroke, and congratulations to Euan Sutjipto on his bronze medal in Boys 13 and Over 100 meter butterfly. The team will look to build off the success of this early event and be mentally and physically ready for the next meet, which takes place in the new year.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Sports Update - Volleyball December was a busy month for the Wolves Junior Volleyball teams, with their final JAMISSA tournament taking place on 6 December, at Jakarta Intercultural School. Both teams benefited from having tremendous interest from students this season, with nineteen girls and fifteen boys participating on each team. This meant ACG was able to enter two teams each into the final tournament, with all four teams playing in three matches. This allowed for maximum participation during the tournament, and all the players got plenty of time on the court. In the previous tournament, the Boys A team made the final and the Girls A team had a 3-1 record. Unfortunately, they were not able to recreate this success this time around, coming up just short in many close matches. The coaches agreed that experience was a factor this time, but the talent level and potential is very high for these players. All involved had a great season and are already looking forward to next year.
Sports Update - JSFA ACG has once again entered teams in the U10 and U12 boys’ categories of the Jakarta Schools Football League (JSFL). After a series of grading games, both our teams were classified in Division A, comprising the best eight teams in their respective age groups from all around Jakarta. Unfortunately, the U10 team are yet to register a victory against some high-quality opposition. The U12s have fared better, beginning their campaign with a win, a draw and a defeat. The team narrowly lost their first match to Al Fath before bouncing back with a comprehensive 7-1 victory against Lycee Francais Jakarta. They then found themselves shorthanded against Al Azhar 8, and had to play the entire 9-a-side match with only eight players. Undaunted, they managed to hold out for a thrilling 5-5 draw. Be sure to check coming editions of the newsletter for news on both teams’ progress.

KarangKita KarangKita (meaning “Our Corals”) is a project by Salsa, Adam, and Alisha of Year 13 for our CAS Project, which is required to complete the IB Diploma Programme. Our goal is not only to spread awareness on the conditions of our coral reefs and the importance of their welfare but also to make sure that we minimize the damage of these corals by replanting the corals that will last for future generations to come. We are currently using Instagram to share information and updates about corals and are selling pins as our primary method of fundraising to replant corals in Kiluan Dolphin Beach, Lampung, Indonesia. Please support us by purchasing our pins by contacting and following us on Instagram @KarangKita or by sharing with others about KarangKita!

Learning at ACG School Jakarta The Arts - Secondary It’s been a very exciting couple of weeks in both the art studio and the sound room. Lina, Adji, Atha, Danu helped test out the equipment in the recording studio so that a) we know it works and b) we are moving closer towards the first ACG unplugged session, so please, watch this space to see the images. Daniel and Sabrina will soon be recognized as our first Radio ACG presenters; last Friday they had a ‘familiarisation session’ with the equipment and the results were recorded. It’s unsure whether or not they will be published, I but they are both naturals in the radio. Y12 students have finished their second piece around the theme of ‘City Dwellers’ using perspective drawing and acrylic painting techniques. Please enjoy the images. I hope that you all have a great holiday and manage to spend some time with loved ones. Have a restful break ready for what promises to be an amazing second semester!
Cafe Society Cafe Society is a program that friends and I made in school. This program’s intent is to allow students and teachers in our school to perform and share their musical talent. People can perform anything that they want. The main goal for me in this experience is to be able to work with my comrades, creating the place for people to showcase their talent. Afterwards, this would lead to the students to discover their talent, which would benefit them in the future. Written by Atha

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Eco Warrior Update The Primary Student Council members have been trying to reduce waste. We noticed paper that hadn’t been used on both sides in the classroom recycling boxes, which isn’t good. We asked Ms Tia if we could have another waste box especially for paper materials that can be used again. Next semester, we will ask our students to use reusable bags, not paper or plastic bags, and to use both sides of paper before putting it in the recycle box. We want ACG School Jakarta students and staff to help the environment by using less paper and plastic. We want them to understand that all their trash is being thrown in landfills that are already full! Our trash is constantly polluting the rivers and seas which also affects the environment. REMEMBER - REDUCE YOUR USE OF PAPER AND PLASTIC! Written by ACG School Jakarta Primary Student Council
Miss Miriam visited Ciliwung River to help clean it up.
ACG School Jakarta donated their old field net to help prevent rubbish flowing throughout the river.
Join the Secondary School Eco Warriors! Last week, Secondary School Eco Warriors began an initiative to make the school a greener and more sustainable learning environment. They created awareness posters, using recycled materials, to promote the activity. Year 12 and 13 representatives also visited classes to encourage students to join the Eco Warriors team, who plan to host awareness events and campaigns in Semester Two. If students are interested in joining the Eco Warriors, please contact 230901876@ acgjakarta.com or speak directly to Daniel Dickinson (Yr 12).

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Enhancing students’ research skills with the Big 6 Research Model Research skills are one of the main approaches to learning in the PYP. During library time, students were introduced to the basic research model, The Big 6. The Big 6 is a research process that is commonly known as an information problem-solving strategy. It integrates information searching and the use of technology tools in a systematic process to help students tackle their research in a series of six steps. By using the research strategies, students were able to develop ideas on the types and locations of sources relevant to their research. The students were all excited when researching their favourite topic by taking down notes and discussing their research work with their partner.
Library Collection to Foster Wellbeing We know that doing well in school, both for students and teachers, is intimately related to wellbeing, so that they can cope, and keep up with, the demands of their activities in school. Realizing this, the Wellbeing Committee at ACG School Jakarta worked collaboratively with the library to foster and encourage students’ wellbeing. The library provides resources in the areas of healthy minds and bodies, such as protecting against bullying, respecting diversity, building positive relationships, and being safe online. Students and teachers have access to the collection. By reading good books, we hope it can emphasise the importance of building a strong school community, relaxing, and feeling supported.

Whole School Updates Parent Volunteer Opportunities
Lost and Found
Many parents have indicated that they would like to volunteer and help out in the Primary classrooms. We have opportunities for parents to come and read with individual students or with a small group of students in the classrooms. If you would like to volunteer your time on a weekly basis to read with children, please send me an email at Jennifer.Kesler@acgedu.com to sign up. We look forward to seeing parents supporting our students!
We have collected a large number of lost and found items over the past 6 weeks and would like to return these items to their owners. A small group of parents have kindly volunteered to help return the items to students throughout the remainder of this week during morning and lunch breaks. A table of lost and found items was set up on Wednesday – Friday THIS week in the cafeteria. Items not claimed by Friday, 29 November will be donated to a charity. Please contact Ibu Dila (dilla_march83@yahoo.com or +62 8131475-3701) or Ibu Nolita (nolita.duder@gmail.com or 0811988233) for further details or questions.
