June 2021 ISSUE

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students, The June Newsletter celebrates the achievements and experiences of a resilient and compassionate school community where there is a wholehearted commitment to learning. I would like to thank everyone involved in making the final challenging month of this academic year a productive and enjoyable experience. Moving significant events on our academic calendar to a virtual platform is never an easy task, but we’ve been able to work with QUBIC360, a virtual reality company here in Jakarta to achieve some wonderful results. However, without the tireless efforts of our teachers and our creative, problem-solving skills of our students, our virtual reality exhibitions would not be possible. Our two Arts Exhibitions, our Year 6 PYP Exhibition and our amazing Design Technology Exhibition have all allowed our students to showcase their work and have given our wider community members the opportunity to view incredible work. Congratulations to everyone involved in creating our VR exhibitions this year! We are pleased to announce that ACG School Jakarta, Indonesia has been granted CIS School Membership. Now that we are a CIS Member, we have access to other CIS services for schools such as CIS Global Citizenship Certification, as well as events and services that help link our school with higher education institutions that are also members of CIS. Further details about the specific outcomes of the recent evaluation will be shared when we form committee teams next academic year. Congratulations to everyone involved and some good news to end the school year! Shawn Hutchinson Principal

Message from the

VICE PRINCIPAL From 14:40 on Friday, 18 June, the Teams meetings abate, the ManageBac reminders stop reminding and Mondays are, in effect, the same as Sundays. 12 midnight on that day will signal the beginning of June 19th, the first full day of the summer holiday for students and teachers (sorry, parents…) Students will come back to school (hopefully in person) on August 11, 2021. Here are some facts and figures about the gap between those two calendar dates. From and including: Saturday, 19 June 2021 To, but not including Wednesday, 11 August 2021 Result: 53 days Or 1 month, 23 days Alternative time units 53 days can be converted to one of these units: • 4,579,200 seconds • 76,320 minutes • 1272 hours •

7 weeks and 4 days

When we compact all of that down to two words, ‘summer holidays’, for example, it sounds so abstract. But in hours and minutes, we can actually start to break it up into tangible slices. So, what could you do in that amount of time? •

Listen to all Beatles songs 132 times each (all songs total duration 578m)

• Walk from Singapore to Melbourne (assuming 4.82km per hour walking speed and the ability to walk on water) • Fly around the world 25 times (with a mask on, of course) • Become basically fluent in French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, June Newsletter

Spanish or Swahili with 5 days to spare (assuming 10 hours per day study and practice) • In fact, in that spare time you could watch the entire James Bond movie collection twice and still have the afternoon off. • Sail from Kupang to Darwin, drive from Darwin to Perth and back again (with toilet breaks), then sail back to Kupang in time to catch your flight to Bali, drive around the whole island ending at Pantai Berawa, take a day off before walking back to South Jakarta and still have 23 days to recover • Goodness, some young people even say they can write an entire EE and still have time to do all most of the above…. Needless to say I am thinking about time, or more to the point, what can be done with it. Time is pretty big, but from our perspective it is not inexhaustible. So, what will you do with your ‘summer holiday? Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 4 We have had a busy month in Year 4. For our Unit of Inquiry on Equity and Equality we had two Zoom guest speakers come to our class: Ananya Sahai from Habitat Young leaders Build sharing what young people are doing to help in the area of shelter for the poor in Indonesia, and Ms Mitre a diplomat for USAID who works for justice and human rights. Our students were inspired to help when they are older. Our students have been excited to come to school during Hybrid learning. Although they had to make sure they kept themselves safe, they enjoyed coming to school again and learning with their friends. Here you can see students presenting their group work on the solar system and calculating perimeter around the school field. Please also enjoy a farewell video from us by clicking the image below.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 5 The last month of school has flown by for Year 5! While we were sad that we were not able to complete the final days with face-to-face learning, we have made the best of the current situation. Students continued to explore conflict management, justice, and peace within our ‘Sharing the Planet’ unit. Students thoroughly enjoyed creating role play skits, either collaboratively or independently, demonstrating their understanding of different types of conflicts, their causes, and practicing strategies to resolve them fairly and peacefully. We participated in group discussions to share our thoughts on each conflict and to continue brainstorming other ways to solve the conflicts presented. These presentations ranged from narrated and acted out skits on zoom, to video animations created with the free children’s coding platform, Scratch, and even Roblox animations created by students. We continue to be impressed with the technological skills and creativity that Year 5 possesses. Our class has built a strong and positive relationship this year, which was important to maintain with the unpredictability of everything with the pandemic. We have learned, laughed, and supported one another each day, and I am proud of all the growth I’ve seen since August. Ms. Mita and I wish our students a healthy and relaxing summer holiday and look forward to seeing these bright students continue to shine in Year 6!

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 6 Aya Adrian My exhibition topic is “How Artificial Intelligence Can Help Fight Forest Fires”. To spread public awareness, I created a website for my action component. My mission is that more and more people would learn about a new technology that can reduce deforestation. When we take care of our forests, humans, animals and trees will be healthier and happier. Please visit my website, www.amay6.wordpress.com to learn more about my exhibition.

Rohit Varma In my exhibition I covered natural causes to global warming and with the assistance of my mentor and teacher I have gotten better in my communication and research skills. These Skills will help me in my future of learning. I am really glad I got lots of support from my teacher, Ms Faaiza, she really supported me through these tough time. My action component is a 4 page Weebly blog and it took me lots of time to complete, I received a lot of support from Ms Faaiza and Mr Todd and it really helped. When I do a blog again, I have the knowledge I need to make one. Ari Philip I chose to focus on the rights and responsibilities we have as humans. My Exhibition looks at how conservation and maintenance can improve and sustain life. I loved researching and finding out ways to help our environment and protect all of our earths animals. In my action component I wanted to make a difference to help animals, so I collected donations. In the end I was able to collect 1,200,000 IDR. The picture shows me donating the amount to the WWF website, I would like for everyone to please donate if you can. Every little bit helps.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 6 Maryam and Jade We focused on Endangered animals, we both love animals and would like to protect all of them. They are all important and we believe they have as much rights as we do. Our action is a song that is related to our topic (endangered animals). It shows the current status of the world and how the world is changing. We would like to spread awareness about these issues. Our ongoing action is to always try and spread awareness to people like many people that use makeup we can tell them which brands do animal testing and which brands are certified cruelty-free.

Adam and Izac Our exhibition speaks about clean energy and its importance because if we solve this clean energy crisis it can also solve other issues such as air pollution. The reason that this is an issue is because of how it is causing a lot of the issues because of how we are burning coal and fossil fuels it causes global warming, air pollution etc. Our group planned to print the poster and we were going to put them up in different places. But due to covid restrictions we could not. So we decided to show it in our presentation just like the presentation. If you want to be an eco-warrior remember to not litter, don’t use plastic and remember to follow the tips on the poster

Teddy and Oliver Our Exhibition went well and we spoke about No Poverty and the causes and effects of people living in poverty. Currently there are seven hundred and fifteen million people living in poverty. We can do something to help these people. Please, if you are in a position to help some less fortunate than yourself, you can donate food, blankets and even medical supplies.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 6 Nathan My exhibition is about all the bad acts that humans due to animals. I wished that this presentation would raise awareness about the negative ways people due to animals. such as puppy mills, which are where people keep dogs in cages. I also show the facts and charts on the bad things we do, such as the population of animal species. My call to action is about illegal poaching and hunting. It talks about the negative ways it impacts animals, such as how it is one of the main causes of shortage of species. My goal is to get 1,000 people to agree with my statement.

Aqil and Harith G We chose to research about Air Pollution and we wanted to explain to people how humans activities influence the environment and the air quality. In our Exhibition, we explained the causes and effects of air pollution and the ways we can reduce air pollution. Remember we need to stop pollution together. Please have a look at our action and the ways we can reduce the Air Pollution.

Eva I’m proud I chose my topic, which is Deforestation because now I understand about what it really means, because caring for the earth and our animals really matters to me. I enjoyed speaking with the kindergarten on what this means, and they were such great listeners. I’m happy they had told their parents what they’d learnt from me, and how saving the earth is important. Not forgetting my planting club, where the Kindergarten then got an opportunity plant and learn why we all need to help the environment. I really enjoyed working with them, which also influenced me to plant more too!

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 6 Kenneth In this year’s PYP Exhibition, my topic was about good health and well-being. I mostly focused on mental health. My exhibition explores at how we could develop our lifestyle and promoting mental health. What I love most about exhibition is when I get to come up with different ideas on promoting mental health such as having a balanced lifestyle and do physical activities adequately. My call to action is to raise awareness about mental health. One of my ways is to create a video about mental health and ways we can improve our mental state and showcase them in a specific location such as a clinic, psychologist centre etc. I also designed a flyer to specifically improve mental health and I dropped the flyer for gratitude journaling onto the ACG Newsletter for the audience to record what they are grateful for and reflect on their positive side of their life.

Alvaro & Harith Yusran Our topic of exhibition is on water pollution. We must reduce water pollution because it has bad impacts to living things especially animals that live in the water. The water is polluted, and it is harmful and poisonous, it makes the animals die and human will get sick. We showed people how to reduce water pollution through the video. We can do some actions to reduce water pollution such as stop throwing the rubbish in the river, lake, or ocean, stop using plastic or use less plastic, do not throw the chemical or cleaning household, medical in the toilet bowl, collect the fat in jar and keep it in the kitchen, no pouring them in the sink, save clean water, use environmentally detergent, reduce using fertilizer, pesticides, etc. Everybody needs to take real action to protect our water in this planet.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 6 Transition Day & ‘Moving Up’ Ceremony It’s a wrap for Year 6! Students have successfully completed all components for the Virtual Reality PYP Exhibition, which was an outstanding success. The next step is to say good-bye to the Primary School and to ‘move up’ to year 7 and the Middle School. As a way to facilitate this transition for students, they had an opportunity to spend a day in following the schedule of Year 7 students. Students participated in Zoom lessons in English, Maths, Science, and Design Technology right alongside current Year 7 students, giving them the opportunity to experience a ‘taste’ of what is to come for them next year. At the end of the day, they were able to participate in a Q&A Session with select Year 7 students and ask them questions to help them prepare for the mental, emotional, and social transition of moving up. Students laughed as they remembered their first days in Middle School and gave the Year 6 students plenty of tips for success! Following the Exhibtion, Year 6 students were included in the Secondary Prizegiving Assembly to celebrate their achievements. Each student was awarded a certificate to mark the successful completion of the Exhibition, and therefore, all elements of the Primary Years Programme. Congratulations Year 6! It has be an amazing year of learning, inquiry, research, and building a strong community of learners. We know you will continue to be successful in Year 7 and beyond.

They exhibited such resilience and strength to overcome any difficulties and challenges that may have presented themselves during this unique time of virtual school. Their live Q&A Zoom sessions were equally amazing, and the way they led and managed the discussions so confidently, was so impressive. Well done, once again Year 6… you did it!

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Primary ELS

Primary ELS students have mastered lots of activities in their learning journey. They are learning about procedural texts in their reading groups and through oral language activities. The highlight of their learning journey this Semester was developing Procedure writing which was integrated with their class learning. They started by reading modelled procedural texts and learnt about the language features. We played roll-a-dice with a question game. They answered the questions related to the recipes or procedural texts that they have read. They also learnt about using imperatives, sequential words, connective words by studying how published authors use them in their texts. The students created their own draft using a template. They wrote their ‘How to’ texts in a draft before they presented and taught their friends in ELS class. They have done great work on their procedures. They also enjoyed being teachers for their friends in the class. Well done, students!

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 7 - Sunflower Poetry Collection

The Sunflower Poetry Project is the final unit of the year for the Year 7 English class. Students explored figurative language such as similes and personification, and how vivid adjectives can help readers visualise a poem. They also learned about the rules of writing poetry and discovered there aren’t any rules! After writing their poems, students recorded themselves reading their poems aloud with varying intonation, volume and pace. We’ve collated the poems and poetry readings to produce the Year 7 Sunflower Poetry Collection, which includes personal illustrations. We hope over the holidays you can find time to read and listen to our literary works of art! Just click on the image and enjoy.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Secondary - Physical Education Students in Years 7-9 who attended school in Term Four were introduced to some new and exciting developments in the Physical Education department, Teaching Games for Understanding. This is an approach to physical education where rather than teaching sport-specific units (e.g., volleyball unit, soccer unit), children and youth gain skills and knowledge to apply to different sports by playing a variety of games associated with 4 game categories: Target, Net & Wall, Invasion and Strike & Field. In this case, students were engaged in a Net & Wall unit, where they were firstly introduced to the basic skills that are transferable and apply to all Net & Wall games. Then they were exposed to the primary rules, and tactical problems associated with various Net & Wall Games and were challenged to develop their own versions. One of the biggest benefits of Teaching Games for Understanding, is that students become literate in a variety of games, activities and sports and develop an understanding and competency of the skills and tactics associated with playing sports.

Kitchen Science is a collection of activities that students can do at home, with everyday ingredients available from the supermarket or convenient stores. We want our students to understand that science does not have to be done in a laboratory; instead, science is involved in all aspects of our lives. From the science department, we want to wish our students happy holidays. Stay Safe!

Year 12 - Physics After a long challenging year, we all appreciate more on peer communication and collaborative support. Thanks to Raahim and Euan, for taking the lead on peer group discussions, to Kai, for being flexible, and to Sangeon, for being perseverant in learning physics through language improvement.
