May 2021 ISSUE
Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students, We have had a very positive and successful month of hybrid teaching and learning, and it is a credit to our faculty, staff, students and parents as they have all been challenged by the regulations and health and safety protocols of the transition and pilot programme. With three weeks remaining of this incredibly difficult 2020-2021 academic year, we are all focused on a really positive finish. Although our virtual whole school assemblies have come to an end, we have a number of important virtual events coming up. Our Visual Arts Virtual Exhibition that was launched last week is a celebration of the wonderful artwork produced by our students across the school and featuring our Year 13 IBDP student work. Congratulations to Mr. Mark Ellison (Arts Team Leader), Mrs. Olivia Owen and Ms Tia Kusmugiarti for their guidance and support of our young artists. Our student leaders have been very busy organizing their final events for the year including the eSports and Game Night event on Friday, 4 June. I’m sure these events will be a hit for the students, and we look forward to hearing about the results in our June newsletter. The student leaders will be following up with a virtual information session for parents, students and faculty on Tuesday, 8 June from 14.00pm. The virtual information session is aimed at parents and students interested in the emerging eSports industry. Join Irene, Senz and Kris from RevivalTV and Toge Productions who will share their experiences about entrepreneurship, gaming, and the esports industries. Our Year 6 students and teachers have been incredibly busy over the past 7 weeks with the culminating experience of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. The PYP Exhibition is scheduled from the 7 – 11 June and the virtual reality platform is sure to provide a memorable experience. Our students are to be congratulated for their commitment, hard work and creativity as they have all tackled importance issues and topics with a great deal of maturity and dedication. Special thanks to all experts, mentors, and the Year 6 Team who have supported our students throughout.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Kindergarten Kindergarten have been very busy exploring the concept of length this week. They have been so creative with their own ideas about how they want to learn more about measuring using non-standard units and created their very own class measuring activity involving unifix cubes and the outside wall! They have used wooden blocks to measure how tall they are, discussing and comparing the differences. When trying to find out who the tallest teacher was, they said “It’s Ms Vanessa” and then promptly asked me to add more unifix cubes to the highest tower because they couldn’t reach. Great problem-solving Kindergarten! They have become obsessed with measuring almost everything in our classroom with the measuring tapes and this has led to some great opportunities to count, read and recognize larger numbers. We are so proud of them!

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 3 The How We Organize Ourselves Unit of Inquiry was about the interconnectedness of human-made systems for communications. Year 3 students explored the different forms of communication such as verbal and non-verbal, the function of signs and symbols for different people, and how the communication system has evolved. Students created 3D models on different communication tools and created a timeline to reflect upon how communication has evolved over the years. When learning about the different forms of communication, we were privileged to have students from Santi Rama School as our guest speakers. Students were happy to meet the students from the school and we learned greeting each other using sign language. We would also like to say thank you to our lovely Year 3 parents that has been supporting children and participating actively in our Unit of Inquiry 6 learning journey.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 8 - 9 Mathematics After more than a year of virtual learning Mr. Hickey was thrilled to welcome students back into his classroom this week. The students were also excited to return to “real school” No time was wasted in the hybrid classroom as students both in the class and online continued their study of area and measurement. This week the Y8 investigated Pi and its relationship to the circumference and area of a circle. There is still much to learn to prepare the students for their upcoming project where they will apply their math knowledge to create real world house designs. Mr. Hickey feels the most impressive thing about his Y8 math students this year has been their positive attitude and their ability to have fun despite the uniquely challenging circumstances.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta CAS Highlights - Meal Distribution Service As part of the requirement for CAS, students in Year 12 and 13 must undertake at least one CAS project. The CAS project is a collaborative, well-considered series of sequential CAS experiences. The primary purpose is to ensure participation in sustained collaboration. ACG students, Kai Widoyo-Kogiso, William Kim and Satria Wiraputra recognized a need in their neighbourhoods where families most affected by the pandemic were struggling to have enough to eat. They came across a newsletter article in the Jakarta Post that outlined how the pandemic was causing many Indonesians to lose their jobs and become more and more financially unstable. Kai stated, “we wanted to give back to the local community during these challenging times and help out as many people as possible.” So, they have been meeting up on a regular basis to prepare meals and develop their cooking skills as well. Then they distribute meals to certain areas in Depok and Jakarta. The meals are all prepared completely by the members and the menu is mainly Indonesian cuisine. This experience continues to be very beneficial for them in terms of what they are learning about with regards to collaboration and the skills involved in cooking and distributing food. It is also clearly beneficial to the people to they donate to. This is the mark of an excellent service experience, where the benefits are reciprocal in nature. Great work fellas!
