ACG FAMILY BBQ
The most anticipated Annual event in ACG School Jakarta 10
As the new school year begins, we are filled with excitement and anticipation for the journey ahead. This year started on a high note with our annual Family BBQ, a truly remarkable event that saw over 600 members of our school community come together. It was heartwarming to witness families, students, and staff enjoying the day, strengthening the bonds that make our school a special place. The laughter, games, and shared meals created an atmosphere of unity and joy, setting a positive tone for the year to come.
The start of the academic year also marks the beginning of various school camps and excursions, which play a crucial role in our holistic approach to education. These experiences are not just about learning outside the classroom; they are pivotal in fostering essential life skills such as teamwork, resilience, and independence. Over the summer, our students had the extraordinary opportunity to participate in the World Scholar’s Cup (WSC) in Seoul. This event was not only a platform for them to showcase their academic talents but also a chance to engage with peers from around the world, broadening their perspectives and cultural understanding.
The success of our students was evident as many qualified for the prestigious Tournament of Champions, which will take place at Yale University in November This achievement reflects their dedication, hard work, and the support of our dedicated teachers and staff
Looking ahead, we have an exciting array of local and overseas trips planned for the year These excursions are designed to enrich our students' educational experiences and provide them with opportunities to apply their learning in real-world contexts. The importance of time spent outside the classroom cannot be overstated In today’s world, where the pandemic and the pervasive presence of smartphones have significantly impacted social interactions, these experiences offer invaluable opportunities for students to connect with their peers in meaningful ways. Building social skills, nurturing friendships, and creating lifelong memories are all vital aspects of these trips.
As we embark on this new school year, we are filled with optimism for the opportunities ahead and the meaningful experiences that will shape our students' futures. We remain committed to providing a well-rounded education that prepares our students not only for academic success but for life’s many challenges and opportunities.
Thanks
Principal of ACG School Jakarta
Carmen Murray
Vice Principal of ACG School Jakarta
First of all, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the ACG community, in particular our ACG students, who really have gone out of their way to help me feel welcome and included What a pleasure it has been to meet your children.
Moving countries, cities, moving to a new house and moving to a new school is something we all have in common. With this, comes the wonderful character dispositions of resilience, brevity, feeling vulnerability, and leaning into sometimes, some nervous moments. This all builds strong character - even though challenging at times - we are nurturing our growth mindset by being open-minded to new opportunities and new environments.
Cultivating a growth mindset means being open-minded to new and exciting ideas and opportunities. It is not something we are born with, but it is a way of thinking that needs to be developed over time - through experiences like moving to a new country for example.
. People who have a growth mindset believe that their abilities and intelligence CAN improve with time and effort. They see challenges as opportunities to learn and get better. Setbacks or mistakes are not proof of limitations but chances to grow and get even better People with a growth mind-set embrace hard work, take on tough tasks and stay resilient when things get tough.
When speaking with your child about mistakes for example, encourage your child's thinking and viewing of mistakes as opportunities to improve. They help us learn and to try again.
Let's cultivate and culture that are not afraid of failures or mistakes.
Kieran Pascoe IBDP Coordinator of ACG School Jakarta
Dear ACG Parents, Students, and Families,
We’ve had a wonderful start to the new academic year for the senior cohorts. You may have read online that we had some extremely strong IBDP results from our May 2024 cohort, averaging well over the global average score and with a top score of 41 from Sana. This was an amazing achievement and placed her in the top 4% of students globally. We’re confident that our current cohorts are on track for some excellent results this May.
We have just returned from an extremely productive DP Retreat in Bogor. We took 48 students and did intensive workshops and teambuilding activities, ending with a lovely hike to a waterfall in Sentul. I’d like to express my thanks to all the students and parents for their support, and Ms. Parker, Ms. Dina, Mr. Chris and Mr. Kumar for participating and running sessions. We’re hopeful that this experience has benefited the students, especially the Year 13s in their final year. Photos to come soon!
I’d also like to welcome our new DP Teachers who have already made an excellent start to the year, both with our continuing and new students. Our new teachers are Ms. Reese Mattison (DP Visual Arts), Ms. Shinna Hutami (DP Chemistry), Mr. Alvince Adoyo (DP Mathematics and Chemistry), Mr Chris England (DP English A), Mr. Narinder Kumar (DP Physics) and Mr. Peter Park (DP Mathematics) I hope that you all get a chance to meet with them this term and make sure you arrange a time with them in our first Parent Teacher Student Conference, early Term 2.
I hope that everyone is doing well and please reach out if your child requires any support.
Kind regards,

Alongside these, a traditional barbecue stall provided mouth-watering grilled delights, staying true to the theme of the event
The event was packed with entertainment for all ages. As the 2024/2025 academic year unfolds, ACG School Jakarta is buzzing with energy and enthusiasm. The first month has been a vibrant tapestry of activities, engaging students from primary through secondary in a variety of enriching experiences. From hands-on projects and collaborative learning to creative arts and sports, our classrooms are alive with curiosity and exploration.
K3/K4
In the first five weeks of our K3 and K4 classes, we have embarked on an exciting journey through our unit, "Who We Are " The children have enthusiastically contributed to our classroom essential agreements and are steadily establishing their routines. We're exploring the value of friendship and the benefits of following daily routines, while also beginning to discuss our families and practise confident introductions. Our goal this term is to foster independence, empathy, and mindfulness, helping each child develop a strong sense of identity and belonging. As we have students from many different countries and cultural backgrounds, language barriers pose a challenge; our focus remains on celebrating our differences and finding shared experiences to strengthen our classroom community.
Since the start of the school year, Year 1 have been busy exploring the world of letters and sounds. They are gradually becoming little readers and writers, discovering the magic of words one sound at a time. It's been wonderful to see their excitement as they recognise letters and begin to understand how they come together to form words. Our main objective this year is to nurture the students into curious and confident inquirers. We want them to ask questions, explore new ideas, and develop a love for learning that goes beyond the classroom By building a strong foundation in reading and writing, we ’ re setting them up for a future full of possibilities
One of the key challenges we ’ re working on is helping the children learn to blend and segment sounds in words. This is a crucial step in their journey to becoming proficient readers and writers While it can be a bit tricky at first, with practice and encouragement, we ’ re confident that each child will make progress. We look forward to watching our little ones grow and thrive this year!
Since the beginning of the new academic year, Year 2 have been learning about what makes a good learner We have been sharing stories and talking about how we are all different and that we all learn differently too. Children have taken ownership of the classroom and created a calm zone where they can relax and spend some quiet time either on their own or with a friend; developed a science table to continue to explore and be curious learners and have lots of places to be create and draw, make books or just doodle.
We have looked closely at the elements of the Learner Profile and thought about what this means not only in our classroom but also during specialist lessons and while we enjoy playing together We are developing a good understanding of the different skills needed to become an effective learner and are developing our own Learner Profile for our classroom, often demonstrating great communication and an open-mindedness to new things!
We have read lots of stories about friendships and what we can do when learning is challenging We love reading, listening to and making up our own stories with puppets in the reading area. We also enjoy making predictions of what we think will happen next and noticing connections to our own lives This week, we are authors; planning, writing, illustrating and publishing our very own version of the story Bea’s Bad Day by Tom Percival
This year, we are hoping to develop positive learning skills which we can use in all areas of our life so we can truly start to become lifelong learners
Since the start of the school year, the main focus has been on my getting to know the children –who they are as people and learners – and for them to get to know my expectations in class. Year 3 is a major transition year; you really see the children transform from young to independent learners who are increasingly able to structure their own inquiries and express unique opinions. In order for this to happen children need to become familiar with lesson routines and comfortable sharing their ideas in a respectful environment.
For our Unit of Inquiry, we have been focusing on relationships; how respect builds them, thinking about how to recognise and respond to different emotions, and how to peacefully resolve disagreements In maths, we have been revising and deepening our learning into place value and addition. Finally, in English we have been studying written recounts It is early in the year, but the children have already made clear progress in all of these areas!
We are excited to share the highlights from our first Unit of Inquiry, titled "Who We Are " During this unit, students had the opportunity to reflect on their well-being and gain a deeper understanding of how their bodies function. They explored their eating habits and discovered the importance of making healthier choices. Through learning about food groups, students identified the appropriate quantities they should consume from each category, enhancing their nutritional knowledge. Additionally, they delved into the various body systems, broadening their understanding of human biology
In our Mathematics lessons, students focused on the concepts of length, mass, and capacity. They learned to use tools such as rulers, measuring wheels, and measuring tapes to measure a variety of objects and distances accurately. A particularly engaging activity involved estimating the weight of different items before weighing them. The students found this exercise enjoyable, as they were often surprised by their predictions many items they thought would be heavy turned out to be surprisingly light, and vice versa!
In English, students honed their reading comprehension skills using colour coding and various strategies to interpret and understand informational texts.
They also focused on the writing genre of explanation writing. Starting with basic texts, students gradually progressed to writing about how their body systems and senses function, allowing them to express their understanding creatively and effectively.
We look forward to continuing this journey of exploration and learning with your children Thank you for your ongoing support!
As we dive into the new academic year at ACG School Jakarta, Year 5 initial focus has been on establishing a positive classroom environment. In the first few weeks, we dedicated time to setting class expectations and creating essential agreements that foster a supportive learning community.
We have now embarked on our first unit, "How We Express Ourselves," where students engage in a variety of activities designed to explore the power of self-expression and its ability to drive change. This unit encourages students to reflect on how their voices can impact the world around them
Our overarching objective this year is to nurture knowledgeable and compassionate thinkers, both through our curriculum and as a cohesive community While we face challenges along the way, our commitment to putting forth our best effort and maintaining a growth mindset will empower us to overcome any obstacles that arise.
As we continue this journey, we look forward to watching our students grow, learn, and express themselves in meaningful ways
We are excited to share the highlights of what has been a fun, challenging and engaging first 5 weeks in the Year 6 classroom.
Students kicked off the year by collaboratively establishing their own essential agreements with the goal of creating a positive and inclusive classroom environment To foster connections, they actively participated in activities like Human Bingo, which allowed the students to get to know their teachers and classmates. The students are to be commended for quickly adapting to the routines and procedures within both their classroom and the wider ACG school environment.
In mathematics, ourYear 6 learners dived into an exploration of the number system. The year started with an introduction to Roman numerals, whereby students practiced their ability to recognise and write numbers using this ancient system. The concept of place value, extending up to a million, was also introduced Students learned to represent numbers in various forms, including standard, expanded, and word forms.
We further expanded our mathematics vocabulary and can now identify and explain to you, terms such as factors, multiples, prime numbers, product and integers. This past week, we have been identifying and practising a range of strategies to solve number problems These include the traditional method, grouping method, finger tricks and even an ancient Japanese stick method! The purpose of exploring different strategies is to develop conceptual understanding of number problems, as well as help students identify methods which make the most sense to them
To gauge student understanding, they have undergone a number of mathematical assessments The purpose of these assessments is to determine students’ prior knowledge, so they can be best supported to continue their development, as well as help the students set their own personal and academic goals
In English, students began the year learning about how to edit and revise their writing. This routine will serve them well for their writing pieces in Year 6 and beyond Linking to our unit of inquiry on digital media, we learned about the structure and language features of a blog post Students identified areas of personal interest and wrote a series of blog posts. We had a variety of interesting topics ranging from ‘Tips for Snorkelling in Belitung’ to ‘My Top 5 Songs by Nu Jeans’! Our students have now begun writing narratives. Next week, we will focus on writing introductory hooks to grab the reader’s attention
In Year 6, we spend 4 lessons per week on our guided reading program. These are times for students to read books with a teacher in small groups at a level that is appropriate for their reading development. During these guided reding sessions, we focus on skills which include; vocabulary, reading fluency, making inferences, making connections, cause and effect, summarising and drawing conclusions.
Our first unit of inquiry has been focused on digital media and How We Express Ourselves Students have learned how to be critical thinkers by evaluating the accuracy and potential biases of information they find online. They have also developed their ethical use of information by learning how to cite sources using the MLA9 format. Furthermore, our students took action by creating a poster aimed at 10-13 year old children to teach them about topics such as; cyberbullying, safe internet searching, safe online gaming and determining real versus fake news.
Soon, we look forward to beginning our next unit on inventions and innovations. In mathematics, we will learn about shape and space, whilst in writing, students will put their source citation and critical thinking skills to work by forming their own research reports about an invention of their choice We look forward to sharing many of our learning experiences with you all again soon!
