Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students, The first semester of the 2021-2022 academic year has been full of great learning, great initiatives and wonderful experiences for students, faculty, and families. Most importantly, our strong community continues to strive to realize our clear vision of becoming a school of creative, innovative problem solvers who are entrepreneurial and confident users of technology. Through creative learning experiences we pursue opportunities to excel in areas of interest and affect change in our local and global communities. We are building a school where students take responsibility, act courageously and exhibit leadership skills that are actively encouraged and rewarded. We are developing a school community that respects nature, indigenous culture, and expressions of difference alongside unifying traditions. I continue to be impressed with the work of our student leaders who present initiatives such as Halloweek, Chess Tournament, and the upcoming ACG’s Got Talent. These events are designed for our students to participate and connect. Rebecca and Anh (Head Girls) and Raheem (Head Boy), together with our Prefects Chiara, Maliek, Lidia and Anirudh and Student Leaders in the Middle, High and Primary Schools have had an incredibly busy first semester and we look forward to seeing what is in store for semester two. It’s official – our Mo Your Own Way challenge is done and dusted. We grew for Movember to raise much-needed funds for men’s health, and we are proud to say we made it over the finish line. It wasn’t easy, but it was worth it – we did it for all the fathers, partners, brothers, sons and friends in our lives and across the world. Now we’re hoping you can make our impact even bigger by chipping in with a donation. Big or small, your donation will help fund groundbreaking projects in mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. We went all out, so are you all in? Anything you give will help change the face of men’s health and we’d be incredibly grateful. If you’d like to chip in, please use the link below. Thanks for your support. Special thanks to Mark Ellison, Ryan McPhee and everyone else who donated! Academic Reports will be released on Friday, 17 December. Parents and students can access reports via ManageBac after receiving an email notification. As this is the final newsletter before semester break, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support and commitment to ACG School Jakarta and I trust that you will all enjoy the holiday break, travel safely and take advantage of spending quality time with family and friends. Message from the
VICE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students, It has been a very buys month, particularly from an academic point of view. All students in Years 7-12 have been hard at work revising for, and then taking exams; reflecting a semester’s learning is a difficult task and we salute the teachers as well as the students for their organisation and hard work. A reminder that exam results do not contribute to students’ semester grades; the results appear on the academic report, but separately from the Semester One grades. Please keep up the good work for the remainder of the semester as your teachers put their finishing touches to your reports. ACG School Jakarta held it’s first DAYFilm movie night thanks to Amara and other student council members. I know that they are busy planning another very exciting event right now, an ACG talent competition, more news on that later! The ACG Radio Wolf group have been meeting and established 5 different programmes they will be making, a definite expansion from last year’s wonderful inaugural efforts from Daniel and Sabrina. This year, Arief, Ahana, Etarina, Rashi, Nabiel, Amara and Raizaaisha are cooking up some wonderful treats for us in a more podcast-like format. I know that the first ‘teaser trailer’ output will reach us before the holidays and then we can look forward to some great student led audio product in the new year. Year 13 applications to universities continue apace, letters of recommendation are being requested, CV’s being written. Please wish our Year 13’s with well whenever you can as they approach the most intense (but rewarding!) part of their final year at school. Richard Todd VIce Principal, DP Coordinator and University Guidance

Message from the SENIOR TEACHER EARLY LEARNING and PYP COORDINATOR Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students, It has been a wonderfully busy Term 2 and I can’t believe we are already approaching the end of Semester 1! October saw a celebration of Halloween student led events, which I hope you enjoy viewing in this month’s newsletter. Moving onto November, students participated in anti-bullying activities, with a focus on ‘being kind’. This is always an important topic and as an IB school, it is something that is embedded into our PSPE (Personal, Social, Physical and Emotional) curriculum and through the Learner Profile attributes. Following on from last month’s newsletter item, I will share the next 5 of our IB Learner Profile descriptions and some of the ways that you can support your child’s development of these at home. These attributes promote the education of the whole person, emphasizing intellectual, personal, emotional and social growth. The learner profile emphasise the whole person as a lifelong learner and an internationally minded, responsible citizen. Principled- They act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness, justice and respect for the dignity of the individual, groups and communities. They take responsibility for their own actions and the consequences that accompany them. How can you help? Involve your child in deciding on the rules for a game or activity and then ensure that they stick to the ones that have been decided upon. Encourage your child to play games that involve teams. Discuss with your child the qualities of a team player. What sort of person would they want on their team? When your child wins a game insist that he or she is a well-mannered winner. They might want to thank their opponent, wave or shake hands with them if that is appropriate. When playing a game, don’t change the rules or let your child win. Being a gracious loser is just as important as being a good winner. Risk-takers- They approach unfamiliar situations and uncertainty with courage and forethought, and have the independence of spirit to explore new roles, ideas and strategies. They are brave and articulate in defending their beliefs. How can you help? If your child is feeling uneasy about trying something, encourage them to attempt it and then reflect on both whether they liked the activity and how it felt to try something new. You child might want to set some short-term goals. Consider activities that make him/her nervous. What are realistic goals for the week? Be careful to explain to your child the difference between being a risk-taker by trying new things and doing dangerous things.

November Newsletter September
Balanced- They understand the importance of intellectual, physical and emotional balance to achieve personal well-being for themselves and others. How can you help? Encourage your child to participate in a wide variety of structured activities. During less structured time, also be aware of the activities that your child is participating in. Too much time in front of the computer or television is obviously not desirable, but all kids need to do a variety of things. Generally active kids should take time for quiet reading or reflection; students who spend a lot of time drawing or reading, should be encouraged to also exercise and play. Discuss the food groups with your child. Spend a few minutes during a mealtime deciding if what your family is eating is balanced. Role model this attribute. Spend time as a parent or family doing many different things. Reflective- They give thoughtful consideration to their own learning and experience. They are able to assess and understand their strengths and limitations in order to support their learning and personal development. How can you help? Spend some time reviewing your child’s learning with them. What do they think are their strengths and areas for improvement. Consider the goals that your child could set for themselves. Make a list not only of the goals, but of specific actions that can be taken to achieve these goals. Encourage your child to create a reflection journal or scrapbook about important events. Thinkers- They exercise initiative in applying thinking skills critically and creatively to recognize and approach complex problems, and make reasoned, ethical decisions. How can you help? Encourage your child to try to think of solutions to problems independently. Pose different real-life problems and questions to your child. Ask your child questions when they are working on a problem: 1. “Do you have any ideas about how we can begin?” 2. “How can we do this differently?” 3. “I had never thought of that. Tell me more about it.” 4. “What other ways can we show that?”

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 6 - Music with Glasses Students in Year 6 did a music experiment with glasses filled with water and learned how they can make their own special sounds by turning glasses of water into instruments, playing simple songs on it and finding out how it works. Each glass had a different tone when they hit it with a spoon. The glass with the most water had the lowest tone while the glass with the least water had the highest. Small vibrations are made and this creates sound waves which travel through the water. More water means slower vibrations and a deeper tone. You can watch the video HERE.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta A Year 7 English Sunflower Project Update! You might remember our Year 7 English Sunflower project last academic year where students explored and wrote poems about Sunflowers. As part of the project students were each given two sunflower seeds, some soil, and a pot with instructions how to grow them at home. Students had fun trying to nurture their seedlings, which wasn’t an easy task. But that was not the case for Meyher Nagpal. As a result of her perseverance and care, nine months later Meyher, now a Year 8, has some beautiful sunflowers growing in her garden!
Year 11 Indonesian – Foreign Language The topic in this unit was the environment. Students discussed and learned vocabulary related to the topic. They also learned about procedural text. Students had to create a procedural text about recycling and make a video. Below is the work from Kenshiro Okamoto (Year 11).

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Middle School English Students in Years 7-9 English classes have all been working towards Summative Assessments in speaking. Year 7’s unit, Getting to Grips with Genre, had the class choose a novel to read from their favourite fiction genre. We all have different tastes, and choices included fantasy, realistic fiction, science fiction and humour. Students then read their novel out of class and prepared a Book Talk, with the goal to encourage others to read their book. They presented their chosen text giving a brief description of the characters, setting and plot, then went on to describe some interesting literary language used by the author, concluding with a star rating. Their presentations were lively, enthusiastic, and definitely sparked the interest of the audience. Here are just some of the presentations given and we hope you enjoy watching them. In Year 8s I understand your point of view, however… unit students looked at the structure and language features of a balanced argument by exploring a range of topics such as, “Is Trickor-Treating just the same as begging?”‘and “Banning homework”. The class were then given a choice of topics, or choice one of their own, to research and draft a six paragraph essay. Topics included “Should zoos close?”, “The minimum age for a Tiktok account should be 16 years” and “Is technology actually solving problems?”. Students followed the writing process of drafting, feedback, editing and submission, including a bibliography. Giving students the opportunity to select their topic resulted in fantastic presentations delivered with clarity and passion. Here are just some of the presentations given and we hope you enjoy watching them. In the People and Places unit for Year 9 students explored cultural, social and historical context and how it can have an impact on the characters, plot, setting or theme of a fiction text. Each student selected a fiction text from their culture, or a culture for which they had strong ties. It was wonderful to see students connect with their heritage through text from Indonesia, India, New Zealand, The Netherlands, China, Malaysia, Brunei and Pakistan. Students then went through the process of drafting and editing their oral presentations in which they introduced their text, gave a personal connection and identified and explained cultural, social or historical examples from their text. This was a great opportunity to learn something about each other and to appreciate that we are such a diverse learning community. Here are just some of the presentations given and we hope you enjoy watching them.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta THIMUN Singapore 2021 THIMUN Singapore 2021 was a resounding success for our delegates who represented our school with enthusiasm, commitment and with debating skill, as they debated draft resolutions and amendments on issues related to the impacts of technology on employment, sustainable development in LEDCS, eco-labelling , child labour , healthcare for migrants and child obesity. Following the procedures and structure of the actual United Nations resolution process, our delegates prepared and improvised speeches as required on draft resolutions and amendments as required, as they debated their committee issues with delegates from other international schools. Our team of hard-working delegates prepared diligently over the last six weeks and collaborated intensively in the mornings before the conference sessions to get all speeches ready and to practice debating across three committees: the ECOSOC Committee, SDC Committee and the YHC Committee. They were able to debate both for and against resolutions as well as provide suggested amendments to the resolution before finally voting. Improvised speeches were the order of the day as delegates collaborated on responding to changing resolution clauses and opposing speeches from other delegates. It was very encouraging to see our leaders of tomorrow take the initiative in proposing and debating operative clauses and amendments with other delegates from other international schools. Well done to Amara, Ellena, Etarina, Nadiyya, Raiza and Nabiel for representing your school with excellence at THIMUN Singapore 2021. We are a debating force to be reckoned with !

Library Update The Library Media Center is a popular hub for learning, enrichment, and student collaboration at ACG School Jakarta. There are a variety of reading resources, including physical books and online books, available in the library. Currently, the library has moved to a new location, in C Block. The library is now divided into the Primary Library and The Secondary Library by carrying a more comfortable place. Students can now use the library to read, borrow books, and study during their library classes. Students look happy when they can be actively involved in various lessons in the library. Access to the reading materials from home During the Covid-19 Pandemic, some students might have to stay at home and choose to learn virtually. Thus, the library provides a service called The Drive-Thru Library. 1.The Drive-Thru Library allows students to borrow books from home To access the Drive-Thru Library, students can access the Library Online Catalog and choose the books they want to borrow. The librarians will locate the books and send a notification email to students or parents when the books are ready to pick up. Students can collect the book from the security post. Click here to learn how to borrow library books through The DriveThru Library. 2.The Virtual Library To support students with a variety of reading materials, the library also provides the Virtual Library. The Virtual Library is an online platform where students can access a variety of titles digitally. The titles will be updated every two weeks. Click here to access the Virtual Library and click here to learn how to access the Virtual Library. 3. Online Reading Platforms The ACG School Jakarta Library supports our students in developing critical competencies across all learning areas by accessing various resources. We have provided a wide range of high-quality, up-to-date resources that the whole community can access to achieve this goal. To access these resources, students need to follow the username and password stated in each resource description. Click here to access the Online Reading Platforms and click here to access to the Online Storybooks. We hope all of the resources can support students in accessing more reading materials. If you have any suggestions or questions, please feel free to contact the librarians by email. Mr Heri (heri.kurniawan@acgedu.com) Ms Ursula (ursula.idayu@acgedu.com)
