Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students, Another busy month of hybrid schooling has seen our wonderful community engage in learning, reflection, and community building activities. The beginning of the month saw our community acknowledge International Teacher’s Day (5 October) and it was an opportunity to commemorate teachers across the globe. This annual initiative aims to recognize and celebrate teachers’ contributions and efforts. Our Virtual Coffee Morning on Saturday, 9 October was well attended by prospective families, and we are looking forward to another fantastic Virtual Open Day on Saturday, 20 November. Details about our upcoming Virtual Open Day can be found in this newsletter edition. Our Marketing Team is always busy writing great stories and articulates about our wonderful community members and this month, we have four stories featured on our website. Take the time to check out these great stories and learn more about our students and teachers. Maths provides building blocks to a universal language Aspiring music producer heads to Berlin Strategies for success from a star student The importance of student leadership At ACG School Jakarta, we believe that student leadership is fundamental to positive school culture and climate. Too often, adults think that they are the designers of a positive school culture. However, we underestimate the influence and impact students have on their own school community. Recently, our student leaders, head boy and girls and prefects had all been actively involved in school climate improvement efforts and we couldn’t be prouder of the way in which they have gone about it. The student-led whole school virtual assemblies, Halloweek activities, and contributions to social media platforms and online magazines are but a few examples of the work our student leaders are involved in. If you get a chance, check out their work online HERE. Shawn Hutchinson Principal

Message from the

VICE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students, October saw the whole school engage in Parent Student Teacher Conferences and I am confident that we are making progress year on year with regard to sharing information for the benefit of improved learning and teaching. These occasions are always great opportunities to ask questions directly of the people with the information. In these days of super-high speed communication through a huge number of platforms, rest assured that if you go to the source, you will get the best, most reliable version of events. This is especially true in the school environment, so I encourage you to all use the established channels of communication to keep informed. We also saw Year 13’s present their Theory of Knowledge Exhibitions and we heard some fantastic presentations exploring how we know what we know; congratulations to all in year 13, a great job was done. Obviously we have all just had a lovely week-long break, hopefully had a rest and enjoyed a spectacularly spooky week of activities, but now our attentions must turn to the most important events in November, which are Extended Essay submission for Y13 and Mid-Year Exams. November 6th is the date when Y13 students are due to hand in their draft EE so that their supervisor can give them some written feedback with which they can improve their final copy, due in January. Please wish them well. Mid-Year Exams will take place November 22-26 and will be completely online in order to establish the most level playing field in the circumstances. Hopefully we might be able to move towards sitting Mock exams in school by March but obviously there are many unknown factors that will affect that situation. We will update you as soon as we have information. In school this week the SS faculty have been focused on Academic Richard Todd VIce Principal, DP Coordinator and University Guidance

Message from the SENIOR TEACHER EARLY LEARNING and PYP COORDINATOR Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students, Welcome to Term Two! I hope you all had a restful and relaxing October break. As an IB school and at the heart of our Primary Years Programme (PYP) are the Learner Profile attributes. These 10 attributes promote the education of the whole person, emphasizing intellectual, personal, emotional and social growth. They focus on the person as a lifelong learner and an internationally minded, responsible citizen. Celebrating students who independently demonstrate any of these 10 learner profile attributes in our monthly newsletter, is just one of the ways that we acknowledge and highlight these. Take a look at five of these Learner Profile descriptions and consider some of the ways that you can support your child’s development of these at home. We look at the next 5 in our November newsletter.

Caring- They show empathy, compassion and respect towards the needs and feelings of others. They have a personal commitment to service, and act to make a positive difference to the lives of others and to the environment. How can you help? Role model the caring behavior you would like to see in your child all the time. Your child listens and notices everything you do. Using kind words, helping people without being asked, being an active listener all show your child that you care about people. Read book about characters being ‘caring’ such as The Giving Tree, The Grouchy Ladybird and The Selfish Crocodile.

Communicators- They understand and express ideas and information confidently and creatively in more than one language and in a variety of modes of communication. They work effectively and willingly in collaboration with others. How can you help? Work with your child to improve his/her listening skills. Being a good listener is an important part of communicating with others. Ask your child questions about their day/their thoughts on local and world issues and encourage them to confidently share their opinions, reflections and ideas, giving reasons why.

October Newsletter September

Knowledgeable- They explore concepts, ideas and issues that have local and global significance. In so doing, they acquire in-depth knowledge and develop understanding across a broad and balanced range of disciplines. How can you help? Foster any area that your child expresses an interest in with books and activities, but also encourage them to explore other areas. Encourage your child to become familiar with current events and to read the newspaper and watch the news when appropriate.

Upcoming Events 5 November PAL: Early Years and the PYP (Kindergarten and Year 1) 15 November MHS Parents Info Session: Intro to ManageBac

Inquirers- They develop their natural curiosity. They acquire the skills necessary to conduct inquiry and research and show independence in learning. They actively enjoy learning and this love of learning will be sustained throughout their lives. How can you help? Model being an inquirer by working with your child to find out the answers to questions and problems you don’t know the answer to by researching and finding out together. Encourage areas of your child’s interest by visiting reputable websites and use this as an opportunity to teach the importance of online safety.

17 November MHS Parents Info Session: Intro to Unifrog 20 November Virtual Open Day 22 - 26 November

Open-minded- They understand and appreciate their own cultures and personal histories, and are open to the perspectives, values and traditions of other individuals and communities. They are accustomed to seeking and evaluating a range of points of view, and are willing to grow from the experience. How can you help? Expose your child to different festivals, celebrations and traditions. Encourage your child to try new things such as new foods, games and activities. When you observe your child being OpenMinded, reinforce this positive behaviour and use the PYP student profile terminology

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 5 Year 5 students are beginning their new unit under the theme “Sharing the Planet” and have completed several unit provocations around conflicts and peace. One of our activities was for students to meditate and write a description of what “peace” means to them from their perspective. As we are learning how we, as a society, can maintain peace, it is important to know that peace looks different to different people. The class is excited to learn more about to handle conflicts as they are a common part of our everyday lives.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Primary Years Physical Education At the beginning of this semester, Year 2 Physical Education integrated with the Unit Of Inquiry - Who We Are, where students were able to learn how to establish balance and make connections with a healthy lifestyle. Students were able to understand the importance of living a healthy life by engaging in regular exercise/body workouts, choosing healthy food options, maintaining hydration, regular sleep patterns, and practicing mindfulness techniques. During the UOI, students worked on a daily journal about healthy lifestyles. We collaborated with the classroom teachers by reminding students every day to complete their daily tracking. Students were so committed that they demonstrated our core school value of excellence in their work. Good job Year 2!

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 9 - Science In Science, we have been learning about energy changes in chemical reactions called endothermic and exothermic reactions. Students that were in the classroom got a chance to do some hands-on investigations to identify whether the reactions were examples of endothermic or exothermic reactions by collecting data. While those online observed these investigations online and interpreted data. It was great to see more students back in person this week at school. I look forward to even more students coming into school so that they too can experience hands-on practical lab skills.

They decided which of three trips a class of 30 should go on based on the students first and second choices and justify their decision using mathematics. They then calculated the cost of the trip (transportation, entrance fee).

The bus company charges £6 per mile. The school fund will pay the first £200 of the trip. Teachers will go free. Each pupil will pay the same amount. This group task was marked using a rubric that looked at these four criteria:

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Student Council’s Virtual HalloWeek Event To celebrate Halloween, a momentous and joyous occasion for students at our school, the student council held a student-led event called HalloWeek. Throughout this week, students and teachers dressed up in their wonderful costumes and participated in some activities that the student council and the prefects organized. On Tuesday, we saw students participate in a Halloween-themed Gaming Night. On Wednesday, students participated in the Scary Story Competition which was an excellent chance for them to display their language composition skills. Subsequently, on Thursday, students and teachers wore horrifying costumes to showcase their Halloween spirit. And finally, on Friday, students watched scary movies with their peers, allowing them to socialize and enjoy the company of others. The week proved to be very engaging and positive, accumulating nearly 90 student participants. Halloweek was a chance for students to be creative and have a memorable time with their friends, despite this pandemic. The goal of HalloWeek was to allow students to be innovative while having fun in the comfort of their own homes. Many of the students came up with phenomenal ideas for costumes and spooky stories. The student leaders, particularly the prefects, did an outstanding job organising this, showcasing their leadership skills. We received feedback from the students claiming that this event was a great way to start the first week back at school. We hope to have more events in the future such as this and see the students at school soon!
