Learner Profile of the Month As a follow up to our professional development for our teachers, Lance King provided our parents with a snapshot of his work with his presentation “Courageous Parenting in a Digital Age.” We were so pleased to see a good number of parent participants and look forward to providing our parent community with more opportunities to learn and engage with our school. Parents who didn’t manage to purchase Lance’s books, can complete the online order form here: Lance King Book Order. Lance King also worked with our students in Years 10 – 13 over two days and focused on approaches to learning and study and examination strategies. Students found the sessions beneficial and were keen to put their newly developed skills and strategies into practice. October Newsletter

Message from the Principal Dear Parents and Caregivers, We began this term with two full days of professional development for our teachers that included keynote presentations each day by Mr. Lance King and a variety of workshops delivered by Lance, and Jennifer Kesler, Richard Todd, and Annie Pickering. Teachers were able to learn more about the importance and value of helping students develop 21st Century learning skills, writing and reading workshops and assessment, creativity, and personalized learning and responsive learning environments. We look forward to seeing the new learnings implemented in our classrooms throughout the year. At the end of Term One, we held Parent Student Teacher Conferences in the Secondary School and Parent Teacher Conferences in the Primary School. I would like to thank all staff, students and parents for their work and participation during this busy and important time of the year. Providing students and parents with feedback about academic progress and social development is an important part of the learning cycle. After receiving feedback, it is important for our students to have a better understanding about their own strengths and areas for improvement and I hope that they can focus on further improvements throughout this term. We have a busy month of events and activities coming up and I’d like to see as many people as possible involved. We wish our ASAC Senior Volleyball teams all the best as they head to Hanoi for a weekend of serious competition. I am sure that they will represent ACG School Jakarta well. On Friday, 15 November, the Secondary Learning Celebration will be held and we would love to see as many parents as possible participate in this event. The Secondary Learning Celebration will give parents the opportunity to view the Year 11 Exploratorium projects, listen to the Year 12 students talk about their mini CAS projects and attend the Year 13 Group 4 Projects presentations. On top of this, parents will be able to experience ACG School Jakarta Secondary School learning firsthand. Parents are encouraged to register to attend our subject specific workshops to learn more about how our students learn in the classroom. Parents will have the opportunity to attend workshops for Visual Art, Design Technology, Mathematics, English, Information Technology in a Global Society, and Physical Education. Our first Open Day of the year will take place on Saturday 23 November from 9.00am to 12.00pm. All parents are welcome to attend, and we would love for you to extend that invitation to your own family, friends, and anyone else you think may be interested in our school.

If you would like to support the ACG School Jakarta Community Group on the day by welcoming prospective families, please let me know. The more parent volunteers we have at school on the day, the better. Allowing interested families to see our campus up close is the best thing we can do to encourage future enrolments and support the ongoing growth of our school. Shawn Hutchinson Principal

Message from the Vice Principal - Primary Dear Parents and Caregivers, Another month has come and gone, and what a month it was! We began with our Parent Teacher Conferences, where teachers and parents met to discuss each student’s progress and goals. Our Primary Sports Carnival was a huge success! The Geckos shocked everyone by winning the Sports Carnival trophy, but everyone is to be commended for their sportsmanship. Thank you to all of the teachers who organized such a great event. I’d also like to thank the parents for their support. The students and staff appreciated the delicious food you prepared. Just before term break, we were all treated to the end of term assembly, which was hosted ‘radio show style’ by our Head Boy and Head Girl. Everyone enjoyed the performances by Kindergarten, Year 3, Year 6, and Year 12. During the assembly, we found out who won the Term 1 House Cup. Congratulations to Biawaks for taking home the win! A new event this year in Primary was the “Day in the Life” event, where parents were invited in to be students for a day. During these events, parents get a taste of the core subjects taught in the classroom, such as reading and writing workshop, mathematics, and our unit of inquiry. Our Year 4-6 event was a huge success and we are looking forward to next week, when our Year 1-3 parents will join us. It was great to see everyone in their costumer today for our Halloween Parade. Our judges had a difficult time deciding on the costume contest winners. Our Student Council hosted a Halloween Disco this afternoon and the turn-out was huge! Students enjoyed dancing with their friends. Thank you Student Council for organizing such a fun event. Jennifer Kesler Vice Principal - Primary

Learning at ACG School Jakarta A Day in the Life Years 4 - 6 Thank you to all of the parents who attended the “Day in the Life event in Year 4-6. During the event, parents experienced reading and writing workshop, mathematics, and unit of inquiry lessons. In addition to the classroom lessons, parents and students played together at recess and ate together in the cafeteria. When speaking to parents after the event, many shared that they found the experience insightful and that they enjoyed spending time with their child at school. We are looking forward to our Year 1-3 event next week, and we hope to see you all there!

Ghina Volunteering I volunteered at UWRF originally for CAS. I have learned so much from the people I met there; they taught me communication skills and how to be responsible. I was placed in the film screening department, which allowed me to meet various well-known Indonesian directors and screen-writers, such as Garin Nugroho and Rayya Makarim. It was an unforgettable experience.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Ubud Writer’s Festival From 24 to 26 October, the school held its annual trip to Ubud Writers’ Festival in Bali, where eighteen students from Year 10 and 11 attended. As always, it was an enjoyable and inspiring trip. The students had the opportunity to participate in private workshops with the international authors Jamie Marina Lau (Australia) and Jenny Zhang (USA) and learn from them about their writing craft. Our students joined in all of the sessions enthusiastically and represented ACG School Jakarta well. In addition to the workshops, we attended a comedy performance from a Filipino about his experiences emigrating to New Zealand and a lively Poetry Slam Competition, featuring poets from all over the world.

Learner Profile of the Month Balanced Social studies homework . . . or social media procrastination? Going to bed early to get a good night’s rest . . . or staying up late to finish an important project? Taking some time to share a snack with friends . . . or heading to the gym or playground for some exercise? Learning to find balance in all aspects of our lives can help lead to overall well-being. Understanding the importance of intellectual, physical and emotional balance is an attribute our students strive to improve and one that will serve them well as they continue to grow.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 4 Assembly The Year 4 assembly was both educational and entertaining. Year 4 students taught the school community about how migration occurs as a response to challenges and opportunities. The assembly consisted of monologues performed by individual students, in addition to a maculele and capoeira performance, which are Brazilian art forms that were created in response to the Portuguese colonizing Brazil. Well done, Year 4!

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Oxford MUN in Singapore Representing ACG School Jakarta at our first Model United Nations (MUN) Conference, a dedicated team of five globally minded ACG students recently attended the OxfordMUN in Singapore. This forum provides students with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of worldwide issues and conflict resolution, further develop their critical thinking skills and cultivate an outlook based on internationalism, leadership and problem solving. Lead by ACG School Jakarta ITGS/Global Perspectives teacher, Mr Brendan McTiernan, the team spent several weeks researching, writing position papers and polishing their speeches in preparation to debate relevant issues with other school teams within the various UN councils. Themes included the empowerment of women in the Commission for Status of Women (CSW), the illicit sale of small arms in Disarmament and International Security Council (DISEC), the regulation of cryptocurrencies in the Economic and Financial Committee (ECOFIN) and tackling of migration as a result of climate change in the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). One of our ACG delegates, Anastasia Iman Sufian, debated on both the empowerment of women issue and on women’s rights to attainable health standards issue in the CSW sessions. She shares her experiences below: How did you find your first MUN conference? My first MUN was very fruitful as I managed to learn a lot from the other members of my committee, CSW. I worked on topics that I was very passionate about and that made me more inclined to research and learn more. The initiative of my peers to solve the issues that we were presented with inspired me and I learned a lot from the different speeches that were presented. How did you prepare for your speeches? With the help of my teacher Mr. McTiernan. Individually, I prepared by researching the topic on many different online sources. We had weekly meetings, refined our speeches and practised them until we were familiar and comfortable with reciting them. What was your favourite part of the three-day conference? The unmoderated caucus. Watching everyone work together on a single draft resolution was very satisfying and I learned the most from the unmoderated caucuses that were held. I learned how to properly construct a draft resolution as well as what kind of approaches to take when solving the issues that we had. Many thanks to our students for their commitment to MUN since the beginning of the academic year, to Mr Brendan McTiernan who headed the MUN programme, and to Mayumi Hutchinson for her incredible support throughout the Singapore trip.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta The Arts October has been a shortened month thanks to a well-deserved holiday and two days of Professional Development for the teachers. Is it strange, then, that when I look back at October I think of it as one of the busiest months I can remember? We started with a Y12/13 Visual Arts trip to Jalan Tolong Selor, a canal-side street that shows an extremely colourful but desperately poor side of this amazing city. We have used this trip as a starting point for a piece of work that examines the relationship between the city and its people. Some of the photographs produced were incredible. Afterward we visited the Macan Museum, a gallery so ambitious in its scale and exhibition offerings, I was literally speechless. World class indeed! They were showing a retrospective of Xu Bing’s work, ‘Thought and Method, an exhibition as thought provoking as it was grandiose. The exhibit continues until 12 January 2020 and I fully recommend you visit if you haven’t already done so. The Y11’s are making progress with their amazing coursework preparations in readiness for next year’s exams. There is a lot of talent here, so watch this space for a showcase soon!
