Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students, September has been another busy month for our students and teachers, and we continue to appreciate and acknowledge the amazing support that you have given this term. Although we have all worked hard to establish positive routines through hybrid schooling, we are mindful of the stress and anxiety the restrictions and schedule changes are creating. We hope that the upcoming holiday period will provide opportunities to reduce screen time and allow for batteries to be recharged. I continue to be impressed with the quality and creativity of our teachers as they navigate through this hybrid school experience. The Building Blocks to a Universal Language (released next week) article is an example of how we are helping students develop real-world problemsolving skills and our student leadership stories are great examples of how we are empowering students to take on leadership responsibilities and initiate change. Our teachers are working tirelessly in very difficult circumstances, and I would like to thank them for their work this term. I am also incredibly proud of the way in which our students have embraced hybrid schooling and have gone above and beyond to connect with each other and engage in online and face to face experiences that continue to promote our core values and strong sense of community. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our newly elected Student Council Members and wish them all the very best for this academic year as they develop their leadership skills and work with the community to introduce student-driven initiatives. Our Student Council is led by our Head Boy (Raahim Hadi), Head Girls (Anh Vu and Rebecca Balanescu) and Prefects (Anirudh Sripathi, Lidia Napitupulu, Chiara Mini and Maliek ten Have), and I’m confident that this strong team will help our other student leaders grow into their roles as the year progresses. At ACG School Jakarta, we want to provide our student leaders with authentic experiences where they can initiate projects, take full responsibility of the projects, and truly develop important leadership skills. Parent Student Teacher Conferences are one of the ways we formally report on student progress and achievement. Our upcoming PSTCs should provide a really positive end to what has been an incredibly busy Term One. I hope that you take up the opportunity to meet with your son / daughter’s teachers from the 11 – 15 October and engage in discussions that should always focus on how your son / daughter can best be supported through their schooling. Once again, I thank you for your continued support throughout Term One and we look forward to a positive Term Two, starting back on Tuesday, 26 October for students. VICE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students, On Campus Learning and general reminders The students are enjoying being back at school, seeing their teachers and friends and reestablishing those vital human contacts and social skills we have all missed so much. Please remind your son/daughter about the importance of physical distancing and washing hands as Jakarta moves further in the right direction. Another reminder please for students to check e-mail, ManageBac and Teams throughout the day to make sure they have the most up to date information regarding their classes. If your son/daughter is going to be absent for any reason, please remember that we will need an e-mail from parents or caregivers to the Advisory teacher and Ms Mia Sari ahead of the planned absence. Last week saw our first whole school assembly of the year so I would like to say a big thank you to the student Assembly Team for a job very well done: thank you Rebecca Balenescu, Raahim Hadi, Anh Vu, Rashi Pandya, Aahana Patel, Rayyan Marwan Jafar and Zidane Arssad. Thank you to those parents who attended our Middle School Webinars, the recordings can be found here. If you have any questions regarding your son/daughter’s routines, classes and assessments, please do not hesitate to contact their Advisor or subject teacher. As we approach the end of September we look forward to our Parent Teacher Student Conferences in the week beginning 11 October. Please see previous communications to make your bookings. Message from the SENIOR TEACHER EARLY LEARNING and PYP COORDINATOR Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students, Another month has flown by, and we are now on our September newsletter! It has certainly been a busy month for our Kindergarten and Primary students, and it gives me great pleasure to share all the learning and fun that has taken place. The highlight for me of course, has been welcoming the students back onto campus for face-to-face learning. Talking, playing, and simply spending time with the students has been wonderful and I have really enjoyed getting to know them all much better and seeing how much they have grown since last year! They have shown such enthusiasm and excitement for their learning and seeing them smile and laugh with their friends is something I have really missed, as I’m sure they have too. What has struck me the most about seeing our students on campus, is just how polite, caring and kind they are. I have observed this so many times from “Good Morning Ms Vanessa, how are you?”, to students assuming the important role of ‘buddy’ for new friends in their class. As students delve into their Units of Inquiry, each Year Level is exploring some very important topics, including different cultures, health and wellness, body systems, diversity, arts and social movements and the world of digital media. We always encourage our students to ‘Take Action’ in their own lives, as a result of their learning in school, so look out for those moments when your child says, feels, acts, or changes in response to an important topic or issue. It is quite significant when they do this, and should be recognized and celebrated, so please let your child’s teacher know. We are always looking to award ‘Taking Action at Home’ certificates for authentic and genuine action, as a result of their learning. We very much look forward to seeing you all between 11-15 October for our Parent Student Teacher Conferences and appreciate you taking the time out of your busy schedules to attend these meetings to celebrate your child’s achievements so far, share and discuss their strengths and goals for the semester ahead. Once again, I wish to thank all our dedicated, supportive, and caring ACG families for their hard work and commitment in supporting their child during these times of hybrid learning. Let’s stay positive, happy and connected. Vanessa Ellison Senior Teacher Early Learning and PYP Coordinator

The students transitioned from home to school with confidence, enthusiasm, and smiley faces. They further developed their class friendships by playing, laughing, and exploring together. They showed curiosity, asked questions, and shared their personal reflections, as they explored the wonders of our Kindergarten learning areas. We are so proud of them and look forward to more play, learning and fun.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 1 “During Chinese Lunar New Year celebration, we wear special attire, like Cheongsam. I come from mixed culture”, shared by Jessy. These are some of the discussions we had during a mockup celebration in class, and students also got the opportunity to share and learn from their friends via the Seesaw blog. Year 1’s are definitely a fun bunch and enthusiastic learners, who enjoy learning through discussion, explorations, and constructing meaning from learning. For this inquiry, specifically on traditional food, students also experience cooking the Indian traditional bread “Chapati”. They took instructions clearly to prepare the dough and role played to cook the bread and serve it. With numbers, students continued to learn number formation, forward and backward counting, including solving word problems. That’s it from Year 1. Catch us on our next newsletter!

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 4 Hybrid teaching saw some of our Year 4 students come to school to enjoy getting to know their classmates, exchange ideas, work with our specialists face to face as well as participate with their online classmates. Year 4 continued to explore the human body systems and this month identified the three main types of muscles (Skeletal, cardiac and smooth muscles), where they are located and their function. Students chose a particular muscle group and presented a mini project on their chosen muscle type (as you can see below), which they presented as posters, and on Canva. Students also created models of the arm using recycled materials as we demonstrated how the skeletal muscles (biceps and triceps) work together to relax and contract. Like detectives, in literacy, we located key features and information of non-fiction texts. In mathematics, we collated our data on class body measurements and learned how to present them in a horizontal bar graph. We also learned about rounding numbers, doubling and halving and vocabulary used in word problems to figure out which operations to use to solve a problem. Year 4 also assisted Year 3 students by providing data for their data handling exercise on diversity in our school community.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 5 Students in Year 5 have been inquiring into the connection between art and social movements for their How We Express Ourselves unit. During our investigations, we have found out that artistic expression is a powerful tool in promoting awareness, sharing education, and inspiring action about injustice in our world. As we continue to learn about these concepts, students have expressed their perspectives related to social movements through our “Social Justice: Free Expression” activities. This allows them to explore their own creativity, different forms of creative expression, and share their opinions on issues of their choice.

She shared her story about how she used to work for a department called Network Operations Centre, NOC. NOC is a centralized location where IT teams can continuously monitor the performance and health of a network. The NOC serves as the first line of defence against network disruptions and failures. She went further to provide the Year 6 students with multiple resources to explore and learn more about the internet.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Primary Years Physical Education Upper primary students started the year improving their manipulative skills, through fun activities using different pieces of sport equipment. Since we were virtual, students and teachers had to be creative and use resources from home such as a pillow, cutting board, magazine, broom, sock, balloon, and laundry basket. The goal was for students to understand the importance of being active, even while at home, to improve their fitness level.

They began the project by constructing some research questions about aspects of being human. They then decide which questions they could explore. Throughout the research process, the students also learn how to evaluate sources, consider author expertise and purpose of the article. Please scan the QR code to watch their videos.
Year 12 - IBDP Psychology Brain imaging technologies are the up-to-date technology to study the brain. Doctors and Scientist often use the fMRI or MRI to study the malfunctions or diseases in the brain. In line with the biological approach topic, which is brain imaging technologies, Year 12 students were asked to research on the past and current technologies and evaluate the technologies. Students were encouraged to explain to the class through presentations.
Year 13 - IBDP Psychology There are a lot of misconceptions about people with mental health issues. Often people with psychological disorders are perceived as dangerous, unreliable or even “beyond help.” In line with the Abnormal Psychology topic, which is diagnosing people with mental illness, Year 13 students were asked to create a PSA (public service announcement) that informs an audience about one mental health issue, with the goal of increasing awareness and empathy about those living with the disorder.

For the love of learning For some students studying can be rather hard work. But as ACG School Jakarta’s Lidia Napitupulu explains, great things can happen when you develop a strong love of learning. The highly motivated 16-year-old has just received exceptional results in her Cambridge IGCSE exams, with three A* grades (90% and above) for Bahasa Indonesia, mathematics and biology and five A grades (80% and above) for chemistry, global perspectives, English, English literature and economics. The secret to her success? Hard work and a great attitude. “The things that helped me the most were studying over a long period of time, being organised and developing a positive mindset. Plenty of feedback and support from my teachers also played a big part,” says Lidia. “Many students think of studying as a burden, something unexciting, but once you realise the pleasure of learning new things, studying actually becomes really fun.” Passionate teachers, innovative classes and dynamic learning environments all help to ensure learning at ACG School Jakarta is as good as it gets. “ACG students are very enthusiastic about their studies, and they’re always striving for the best results. They persevere, overcome challenges and aspire to reach their full potential.” Lidia is no exception. “I am someone who strives for perfection and constantly wishes I could do better – there’s always space for improvement.” Despite this, however, she admits to being “quite happy” with her recent IGCSE results, particularly her mathematics and biology achievements. “I’ve always loved these two subjects and give them my all when studying. These courses gave me a lot of joy and comfort, and I was pretty pleased with what I accomplished. Overall, I really enjoyed the Cambridge curriculum. It provided enough challenges, was well organised and straightforward, and everything that was in the exams related to what we’d learned in class.” After more than ten years at ACG School Jakarta, Lidia is a strong advocate for everything the school offers – not only academically but also culturally and socially. “I love being a student here. It’s welcoming, friendly, and full of respectful and open-minded people who appreciate those from different cultures and backgrounds.” And for those just embarking on their IGCSE journey, Lidia has a few words of advice… “Take it easy, and don’t be too hard on yourself. Don’t study to achieve the best grade but study to gain more knowledge because results don’t define who you are or your capabilities at the end of the day. Having said that, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t study or try your hardest to achieve the very best results!” September Newsletter

Chiara Mini: championing school spirit Year 12 prefect Chiara Mini has lots in store for ACG School Jakarta this year - and organising fun, Covid-safe events to help students stay motivated is at the top of her list. “I’ll be pursuing plenty of innovative events that will give students something to look forward to,” she says. “Mental health has always been important to me, and I want to help others prioritise their mental health too. Social interaction is super limited in our current situation, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun. We just need to get creative about it!” The enthusiastic 15-year-old is leading the design committee and says she is “honoured” to be chosen as one of this year’s prefects. “This role is of huge significance to me. I can be a spokesperson for my peers, encourage them to get involved, and grow our school spirit. I’ll tackle anything and want to let students know their voices will be heard, and their position matters. I can help show students that there’s a lot more to ACG School Jakarta than academics.” Ever since starting at the school in Year 7, Chiara has longed to be part of the Student Council, honing her leadership skills as a house vice-captain and putting her hand up to help at numerous school events. “The way I see it, ten years on from now, I’m not going to remember some assignment I did in biology, but I am going to remember events my peers and I enjoyed thanks to the Student Council. Being involved in school leadership at this level allows me to work in a team, share my ideas and work for the betterment of my student community.” And what makes her appointment even better is the fact that she’ll be building skills that will last her a lifetime. “I certainly think that being a prefect will help me in the future as it provides me with plenty of opportunities to strengthen my leadership, team building, communication skills and more. In addition, being in the Student Council allows me to get a grip on what working with people my age is really like.”
