ACG SUNDERLAND
WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 15, Term One, Week Two, 7 February 2020 Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland Like me, I hope that you all had a wonderful Waitangi Day. We could not have asked for better weather! Over the last few days, the College Leaders along with our Head Girl, Shannon Macdonald, and Head Boy, Jack Feng, have been on a Leadership camp with Mr Philip Keen and Mrs Louise King. The aim of the camp is to encourage personal development in a leadership role and to give the students a positive environment to successfully plan and organise the House events for the year. This camp provides an opportunity for students to develop the skills needed to be a successful leader at ACG Sunderland. The overall feedback was that it was a highly successful event, many thanks must go Mr Keen and Mrs King. On Tuesday evening we held our annual College ‘Meet the Teacher’ evening, followed on Wednesday by our Primary ‘Meet the Teacher’ evening. It was a great occasion for parents to meet with staff and other parents in the community. Next week we will be holding our annual ID / Portrait photos for the Primary on Wednesday 12 February in the Auditorium. Parents will have the opportunity to order portrait photos later in the term, students will bring home the instructions on how to order in due course. The College date for ID Photos / Portraits is set for Monday 24 February. The College Swimming Sports is Thursday 13 February at Westwave Pools, Henderson. Parents and Caregivers are more than welcome to attend as spectators, seating has been put aside for you. All students leave from school at 9.00am and will return by 3.00pm. This will be our first year with six Houses in the competition and we are expecting a spectacular day.
OPEN DAY SATURDAY 7 MARCH 10:30AM-2:30PM

The overseas trip this year is to Borneo. Students will be heading off at the end of the year as part of a community service project in a village. Student fundraising is well underway, we have amazing tote bags with student designed artwork for sale. Student success is always celebrated at ACG Sunderland, and extra-curricular activities are included. I wish to highlight Mason Wong’s success at the recent swimming competition ‘Anthony Mosse Classic 2020’. Mason got GOLD in 100m and 50m Butterfly, and BRONZE in 100m IM, 200m IM, 50m Backstroke and 100m Backstroke last weekend in the Anthony Mosse Classic 2020. Well done.

Alto Saxophones Arrive!
ACG Sunderland now has 24 brand new alto saxophones. These instruments will become part of the curriculum for Year 7 and 8 students. Below is an interview with Daniel O’Connor, the Head of Music at Sunderland. Why alto saxophones? Well, quite simply, they are a cool instrument and it doesn’t take long to figure out how to play it and make a good sound. I also thought it would be good for students to experience a different way of creating music. Can anyone really learn how to play? Yes, absolutely. Really, all you do is put it in your mouth and blow and put your fingers on the right keys. Please explain how it makes a sound. There’s a very thin piece of wood, called a reed. When you blow in the mouthpiece it vibrates. The body of the instrument amplifies the sound. The more keys you put down the lower the notes go. If you’ve ever made a hilarious buzzing noise with a blade of grass - it’s the same principle. What should students do if they are really keen on the alto sax? Students will be able to sign these instruments out on the weekend. Music is posted on Blackboard. We also have an excellent saxophone teacher for those who’d like to continue with the instruments once they have finished a term in Music class. Last question, what do you especially like about the instrument? It’s nice to work on an instrument that “sings”. It is a very similar feel to improving your singing voice. Also, I do love Jazz music. Saxophone is probably the best jazz instrument of all times.
